Some people live by the motto with three L’s, “live.laugh. love.” You know you’ve heard it or seen it. You might even live by it yourself. Whatever the case, this issue of BLVD brings you all the L’s of life, fashion and Athens that can all be summed up by “live.laugh.love.” I’ve learned that you have to live your life and live it well. No matter what life may bring, you have to embrace it and live. Enjoy your life. Take our advice and go on a road trip with your friends to the LOUDEST venues across the U.S. or simply indulge in homemade ice cream with the recipes we’ve provided. Step out and live your life. When life gets tough, all you can do is laugh. The sisters of “The Official Hot Mess” know this best. They don’t take life too seriously and get by with a positive attitude and a good laugh. Smiling is contagious and everyone needs a good laugh.
You have to love what you do and do it well. April Johnston is a great example of this. As a contestant on “Project Runway,” she was able to show the world her one-true-love: design. She was able to express herself in front of millions of people and week-by-week show her love through her creations. She may not have won “Project Runway,” but you can’t deny that April doesn’t love what she does. Whatever your motto or stance on life, just remember you have to love the life you live and when it gets hard, you just have to laugh.

BAND TO LISTEN TO: The Los Angeles-based band, Foster the People, creates infectiously catchy, summer tunes. They’ve got whistling, clapping and upbeat music over unexpected lyrics. The band’s song, “Pumped Up Kicks,” is a little reminiscent of Peter, Bjorn and John’s summer 2007 hit, “Young Folks,” and may just be this summer’s surprise song.
MOVIE TO WATCH: This summer is the summer of sequels and threequels. But if you’re looking for something a little more original, check out “Submarine,” a coming-of–age film directed by Richard Ayoade. Based on a novel of the same name, the quirky, Wes Andersontype film tells the story of 15-year-old Oliver Tate as he tries to save his parents’ marriage and lose his virginity before turning 16. With its dry humor and skilled actors, “Submarine” may just become this summer’s sleeper hit. The film will be in limited release starting June 3.
EVENT: The summer music festival is here. If you have the chance, make your way to one of the biggest festivals of them all. This year’s Bonnaroo starts June 9 and ends June 12. Eminem, Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Mumford & Sons, Arcade Fire, the Black Keys, Girl Talk, Grace Potter, the Nocturnals and a slew of other
bands and artists are slated to perform.
SHOW TO WATCH: The ever retro and fashionable “Mad Men” may not be returning to television screens until 2012, but that does not mean there won’t be any good programs on the air. “Teen Wolf,” MTV’s remake of the classic ‘80s comedy of the same name starring Michael J. Fox premieres June 5. The show is markedly different from its originator. Edgy, brooding, campy, funny and sexy, “Teen Wolf” will no doubt be this summer’s guilty pleasure.
BOOK TO READ: “The Tiger’s Wife” by Tea Obreht has already garnered much praise from the New York Times, the Washington Post and countless others. Obreht is the youngest of The New Yorker’s 20 Best American Fiction Writers under
40. Her debut novel tells the tale of Natalia, a young doctor in a Balkan country who unravels the secrets of her grandfather’s past after his death. Pick up a copy if you’re a fan of Gabriel Garcia Marquez for $25.

LOVE, PEACE, & ICE CREAM! Get 5 scoops of delicious homemade recipes
I scream,
you scream. We all scream for ice cream! Summer is finally here, and the temperatures are rising. That means it is time to cool down and start churning. Whether relaxing by the pool or entertaining friends at a barbeque, here are five appetizing homemade ice cream recipes to try.
3 HOMEMADE ICE CREAM ESSENTIALS: 1. Electric ice cream maker 2. Rock salt 3. One or two bags of ice PAULA DEEN’S HOMEMADE VANILLA ICE CREAM Ingredients: 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk 2 (12-ounce) cans evaporated milk 2 cup white sugar 4 eggs Whole milk
Directions:
Using an electric mixer, beat eggs and sugar. Put in evaporated milk, condensed milk and vanilla extract. Beat well. Pour the mixture into an electric ice cream churn. Add whole milk to fill the rest of the churn. Place in the dasher or paddle. Pack the canister 1/3 full with ice. Add a layer of rock salt. Repeat layering with ice and salt until full.
Note: Try not to overfill with ice, spilling it into
the churn. When the churn begins to shut off, take out the dasher and empty the water.

Fill with more ice and salt. Cover with a towel and let harden. Makes 1 gallon of ice cream.
7 SINS ICE CREAM DESSERT GEORGIA PEACH CUSTARD Ingredients: ICE CREAM 24 Oreo cookies, crumbled ¼ cup butter, melted ½ gallon ice cream, softened 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk ½ cup butter, or ½ cup margarine, softened 16 ounces chocolate syrup 1 teaspoon vanilla 8 ounces whipped topping 1 cup pecans or walnuts
Directions:
Mix cookie crumbs with melted butter. Press into 9 x 13” glass pan. Freeze for about 30 minutes. Use the vanilla ice cream recipe above on top. Continue to freeze another 30 minutes. Combine the condensed milk, chocolate syrup and butter, then bring to a boil to make the syrup. Let the syrup simmer 5 minutes. Mix in the vanilla. Pour mixture on top of the ice cream. Freeze for another 30 minutes. Spread whipped topping over the dessert. Sprinkle with chopped nuts. Place in the refrigerator 30 minutes before serving.
MAMA’S CHOCOLATE BUTTERFINGER ICE CREAM Ingredients: 8 (2-ounce) butterfingers, crushed ½ gallon of chocolate milk 1 (14-ounce) can eagle brand condense milk 1 (8-ounce) container of Cool whip
Directions:
Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. Pour the mixture into the ice cream churn. Place in the dasher or paddle. Add the mixture to the electric ice cream maker. Process according to manufacturers’ directions. Makes 1 gallon of ice cream.
Ingredients:
1 quart whole milk 1 cup cream or evaporated milk 3 eggs 1 cup sugar 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1/8 teaspoon of salt 2 quarts mashed Pearson peaches
Directions:
Boil the milk and cream. Separately, beat the eggs and combine with half of the sugar. Mix flour and salt with remainder of sugar. Blend all with the hot milk and cream. Cook until mixture thickens. Add fresh, mashed Georgia peaches and vanilla. Freeze until ready to serve. Makes 1½ gallons of ice cream.
EMERIL LAGASSE’S FRESH LEMON AND LAVENDER ICE CREAM Ingredients:
¾ cups granulated sugar 2 lemons, zested ½ cup fresh lavender or ¼ cup dried lavender 2 cups whole milk 2 cups heavy cream 8 egg yolks 12 thin slices fresh lemon 12 small sprigs fresh lavender
Directions:
Combine the lemon zest, lavender, milk and cream in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Let the ingredients soak in the saucepan for 20 minutes. Filter once complete. Gently whisk the egg yolks and sugar together. Whisk 1 cup of the hot cream into the egg mixture. Blend carefully, and then add the egg mixture to the hot cream mixture. Continue to heat for 4 minutes, stirring only intermittently. Remove the mixture from the heat and let it cool completely. Filter the mixture. Add the mixture to the electric ice cream maker. LEMONS Make More than Lemonade By: Molly Berg

ith the ever-increasing cost of living, it is nice to find cheap solutions to everyday problems. Surprisingly enough, two solutions can be found in your own refrigerator in the form of lemon and lime. They have many more practical uses than you might expect and are quick fixes to health, beauty and cleaning needs! Lemons and limes are acidic fruits high in vitamin C. An easy way to distinguish them from each other is their distinct color and taste. Lemons are typically sour and yellow while limes are green and sweeter. They have been around for literally thousands of years and, in ancient times, were used for medical purposes. Lemon is most commonly used for culinary dishes. In addition to being used for lemonade and marinade, lemons are also a garnish on drinks and food. In addition to this, lemon can be used to treat medical ailments. Hundreds of years ago, sailors were given lemons in order to prevent scurvy, due to the fruit’s high content of vitamin C. Nowadays, lemons can be used as a hand wash, since the pH is relatively low. Lemons are also commonly used in elementary school classrooms, as a conductor that produces electricity. These fruits act as a battery to power a digital watch. However, lemon uses do not end there. Many people put lemons to work during the summer in their hair, to lighten it. Lemon juice is well known for giving hair highlights during sun exposure. 12

Finally, lemons are used for cleaning. Many of the polish products you buy at the store may already have lemon in them, such as Pine Sol Multi Surface Cleaner and Endust Dusting and Cleaning Spray. The juice from the lemons can disinfect counters and remove grease, if used with a sponge. It can also remove persistent odors in the kitchen air. Considered one of the natural cleaners, lemons have countless applications. Lime also performs many of the same tasks as lemons. Typically smaller than lemons, limes are also found in many cleaning products. However, unlike lemons, they can be found in some perfumes, like Aromatic Lime Montale and Coconut Lime Verbena from Bath and Body Works. Limes are primarily found in tropical regions, and many are also grown in India. According to the website Organic Facts, limes aid weight loss, eye care, digestion and skin care, among others, which essentially correlates back to the high amount of vitamin C in the fruit! Limes are not as versatile as lemons, but they are typically great additions to dishes. They are often found in Mexican cuisine, such as Mexican rice and grilled chile chicken. The next time you think about going to the store for cleaner or beauty products, you may want to think again. Lemon and lime promote good health and smell. They may save you money when you want to better yourself or your home!

Or maybe it was with that guy, with the mustard stained T-shirt and the faux hawk you met one drunken night at a party. You weren’t drawn to each other from across the room but so what? You met because you tripped and fell into his lap. “Ice, Ice Baby” was playing and you couldn’t resist his version of the robot from earlier. Maybe she was the girl-next-door, the kind you could bring home to mom and everything would be just swell. Or maybe it was with the girl-in-thenext-dorm with the infected belly-button piercing and the personality to match. And no, we are not talking about the first time you had sex. We really hope not. We are talking about another “first:” that wonderfully magical time, when you are so nervous about the outcome that you could just barf. Literally. Happy First Pregnancy Scare! Whoo! Let’s face it. That anxious nauseous feeling is not ecstatic excitement. It is pregnancy hormonesoaked fear. Probably. At this point, you are one of two people. You’re that girl standing in a bathroom with a pregnancy test in one hand and a late text-loaded cell phone in the other, wondering if you will need to press the “send” button. Or you’re about to be that guy who just swerved off the road on the way to class because the dreaded baby text was launched and it landed
squarely in your inbox. Aww, it’s like an e-Stork. Babies. They are only cute in two situations: when you are absolutely ready to have one, or when they are not yours. Add a baby to any other circumstance than the ones outlined above and you have earned yourself nine months of panic, eighteen years of debt and a lifetime of worrying about someone who may or may not even remember to call you on your birthday. But it’s not all bad. We have all seen that “Teen Mom” episode. Things can definitely work out. But there is a reason why your heart sinks when the stick turns blue. Bringing a child into this world when you are clearly not ready— it’s just not fair to the kid. Or you. Oh, if only there was a way to prevent something like this from happening! If only there were a thin, glove-like device that could keep you from conceiving faux hawk-guy’s hell spawn. Wait, what’s that you say? There is such a miraculous invention? And billions of these “condoms” are sold every year?! It’s true. When it comes to contraception, you are getting the most for your money with a latex condom. Whether you get them free at the campus clinic or pay $2.50 a pop, condoms usually only have a failure rate of 14-15 percent and, if used with a spermicidal agent, the success rate of a condom gets bumped up to 95 percent, according to AmericanPregnancy.org. And really, an 85-95 percent success rate is better than a 50-50 shot at welcoming junior into the world nine months later. Condoms even help prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted infections and are the only contraceptives that can do so. And if you are allergic to latex, there are variations of condoms, such as lambskin or polyurethane that allow you to reap the benefits of contraception without dealing with an allergic reaction. Protein?
Students who have taken bio lab may already know that many formulas for protein shakes ironically contain little to no actual protein. While they may contain other organic molecules such as starches, the key advertised ingredient – protein – is often not necessarily the key ingredient in these supplements. Starches are just long chains of sugar, meaning that the average protein shake may not be as healthy as you think. Since most protein shakes are preformulated or pre-made, making your own will help you control the amount of fat and sugar that goes into it.

hough not a music venue per se, Grant Park, located in the heart of the Chicago, Ill. business district, is well known for hosting the Lollapalooza rock music festival since 2005. Affectionately labeled “the city’s front yard,” the park is a great location for such a huge event for a number of reasons. According to Alice Lee, graduating senior at the University of Chicago, “Grant Park is an especially good ‘venue’ for the festival because practically speaking, (1) it’s big enough, (2) it’s easy
enough to get to, but (3) it’s also…self-contained enough to not throw the rest of Chicago into a frenzy.” Lee continues, It’s also a great venue because being on the lakefront in Chicago during the summer is one of the best places I think anyone could be. Because part of going to a music festival is about walking around and exploring all of the different stages, the physical setting makes a big difference in your overall experience Then, at night, watching 200+ people dance to The Strokes with the Chicago skyline as a backdrop... Well, also very very very awesome.
The 2010 lineup featured The Strokes, as mentioned, as well as other hugely popular acts Arcade Fire, Phoenix, Spoon, The National, MGMT, Yeasayer, Lady Gaga, The xx, Switchfoot, B.o.B. and The Black Keys among many others. No official word yet on this year’s lineup, but rumors have already suggested appearances by such colossal acts as Eminem, Foo Fighters, Muse, Best Coast, G. Love, and Jane’s Addiction, whose frontman Perry Farrell was responsible for Lollapalooza’s conception in the first place.

I
f you find yourself on the West Coast looking for a place to catch a show, The Fillmore in San Francisco, Calif. is a good place to start. This historic venue, known for its handin-hand association with counterculture, has been through a lot. After undergoing

ccording to entertainment writer Travis Petersen, The Troubadour in West Hollywood, Calif. is “deceptively small for its big place in rock history.” Besides being the place where John Lennon got kicked out for harassing another band, since its opening

significant damage by the earthquake that hit California in 1989, The Fillmore closed its doors. Since reopening in 1994, this venue has remained a favorite because of its ideal, Goldilocksworthy size. Not too big, concertgoers can still get that up-close-andpersonal experience with their favorite bands. Not too small, those who just
in 1957, this venue has been known for giving such notable acts as The Eagles and Elton John their start. It also gained attention for bringing overseas acts Radiohead, Coldplay, Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys to the public’s notice. Other famous acts that have played here include Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen, Fiona Apple and
Sheryl Crow. More recently, The Troubadour has been a favorite haunt of singer-songwriters Ray Lamontagne, Mason Jennings and Kina Grannis. Although its history and famous alumni alone could make this venue the top pick for the Southwest, regulars also swear by the friendly bouncers and laidback vibe of the patrons.

Northeast
T
he Northeast, and even New York City alone, boasts a huge roster of hot music venues. But most music aficionados will tell you that the smaller venues are the truly memorable ones, which is why The Bowery Ballroom in Brooklyn, N.Y. gets BLVD’s pick for the Northeast. Recent NYU grad Max Zorick tells us, “I prefer the smaller, more intimate mwusic venues for shows in New York City. Because of the size of [the]
city’s population, even many of the less popular bands end up playing at venues such as Terminal 5, Madison Square Garden or other gigantic venues. From time to time you can catch a great band at…the Bowery Ballroom for a smaller and, in my opinion, better experience.” Zorick confesses, “One of the downsides to smaller venues is that it can be hard to get tickets before they sell out.” Regulars claim, however, that the acoustics don’t get much better than The Bowery, so if you are ever in the City, hop on a train to neighboring Brooklyn and catch a show here.
Southeast
T
he 40 Watt Club in our very own Athens, Ga. is foremost among the venues that have put the Classic City on the music industry map. Notable acts that have played here include R.E.M., Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, M.I.A. and Neutral Milk Hotel, as well as recent hometown heavyweights Dead
Confederate, The Whigs, Modern Skirts and of Montreal. The cheap PBR tallboys and the fact that “it has 24-ounce cans of Coors Light” don’t hurt either, according to UGA student Audris Insixiengmay. This impressive list of headliners and cheap drinks make The 40 Watt both a local and national favorite.

t’s Friday night. The clock has just hit 8 p.m. and the chandelier lighting illuminates the anxious crowded room. Streaks of vibrant colors fill the air as this season’s hottest fashion show commences and the styles of the most talked about designers strut down the runway. What is this? New York Fashion Week? Think again. It’s the heart of Athens. This city is known for many things. Parties, bars, Bulldawgs. But FASHION? Yup. It may be hard to believe that in a town filled with a habitual sea of red and black, there is any room for the daring world of fashionistas. BLVD sat down to chat with three lovely ladies, Sha’mira Covington, Anne Gaelle Bouzy and Kethia Booker, who are continuously living out their fashion dreams right here on campus.
Covington: I began designing in high school; it was just drawings and collecting fabric swatches at that point. I was really into watercolors, so I’d draw up an outfit (rendered horribly) and do watercolor wash over it. I had sketchbooks full of them! I loved “Project Runway” too and would watch it faithfully. Every season I’d look for a pattern from the show and try to make it. It was all in good fun. Bouzy: Growing up I was always fascinated by colors, fabrics, and wardrobe styling. My motivation began when I got my first sewing machine at age 17. From then on, I have been inspired to design unique pieces that people would normally not find in contemporary stores. Booker: I started designing clothes when I was a young girl. I would make Barbie clothes out of old socks and toilet tissue. However, I didn’t learn how to sew until I was in the eleventh grade when I took a costume design class at my high school. I took the class so that I could finally learn how to make

Covington: Oh no, a what’s in your future question! Honestly, I have no idea what I’ll be doing in 10 years. I only foresee plans two years in advance, maybe. Hopefully I’ll have a career in brand managing, merchandising or buying. Who knows? I couldn’t even fathom 10 years from now.

the clothing creations that were in my mind. My theatrical costuming background can be seen in my elaborate designs. BLVD: What is your absolute favorite thing you have made? Covington: My favorite thing I’ve ever made isn’t even a garment, it’s a close-up painting of yellow and purple lilies. I will say though that I made “pumpkin breeches” at work for a show and they were hilariously adorable. Definitely, my favorite thing I’ve sewn thus far. I’m also working on this floral top that’s pretty close to being my favorite… whenever its finished. Bouzy: Last fall I made this black velvet dress adorned with silver studs and spikes. It looked great on my model and has been my favorite piece. Currently, I am working on a nude and black cage dress and I think it has made my favorite list as well! Booker: I actually have two favorite things that I’ve made. The first thing is an apron made out of red and blue bandanna print material. I made it for my mom and she wears it whenever she bakes. My second favorite thing that I’ve made is my first evening gown. It was an all black backless gown with a plunging neckline. I really challenged my skills with this dress. I was very pleased and proud of the results. BLVD: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Bouzy: In 10 years, I see myself working at a top fashion PR firm representing notable companies and designers. Also, I see my line thriving and well known. Booker: Well, my major right now is Pre-Nursing/ Child and Family Development so hopefully 10 years from now I [will] be a successful Nurse Practitioner. However, regardless of my future career I’ve always wanted to own my own clothing boutique. I’ll probably continue to design and make clothes too. Designing is my outlet. It allows me to take my mind off the things in life that cause me stress so I really can’t see myself not sewing in my future. BLVD: Do you sell your designs or accessories? If so, where? Covington: I don’t sell any of my designs. I usually make my own hair accessories and if I have a friend that likes them, I’ll just give them one. My mom keeps all my stuff in her personal “collection” when I’m over it. Maybe one day I’ll get “serious” enough to sell my designs, but right now it’s more fun for me. Bouzy: Yes, my designs are featured on my Facebook page (add me!), as well as my new site gspot.com. Booker: No, I have never sold any of my designs. However, this year I would be interested in selling a few of them. Needless to say, these three ladies have something they all share in common: gifted creativity. They will all feature their very own designs in The Fashion Design Student Association’s Spring Fashion Show. It is no doubt they have a future brighter than the brightest shooting star. 1. DON’T BE BASHFUL. Who likes a timid housewife? Nobody. Unlike the fairytale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Bashful is not included in this fierce world of estrogen, makeup and high heels. Instead of hiding behind others, voice your opinion and voice it loud. Make sure your presence is known immediately as you walk into a room. Your entrance is everything. Don’t be afraid to be yourself. What do you have to lose? Absolutely nothing. The diverse characteristics and traits that distinguish you from others are not only unique, but beneficial. Your individuality acts as a deadly weapon against others, especially your competition—other housewives. The confidence you carry will also display a true sense of self and present a bit of empowerment. Everybody loves a woman’s attitude mixed with self-assurance and dignity. It is a perfect combination.
2. DRESS TO IMPRESS. Toss the dingy sweats, apron and rubber gloves too. It is time for a complete physical makeover. Beauty is pain and you must look fashionable 24/7, even when cleaning and cooking. No need for planning appropriate attire. You must always be seen at your very best, even when you are at a backyard barbeque. Your objective is not only to make a grand entrance, but look good while doing it. Your rivals are watching so don’t disappoint or let them out dress you. This means wearing the sexiest cocktail dress you own that shows off your amazing legs. Don’t forget the high heels and new designer handbag your husband bought you. Accessorize properly, especially with as many diamonds as you can. Why wear one big rock if you are able to wear the entire jewelry box? Go big and gaudy, or go home.
3. FIND A SECOND SOUL MATE. Time to talk about your soul mate. For most fiery and untamable women, just one man simply will not do. That’s why a housewife needs a second soul mate: a gay boyfriend. Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but so is a gay boyfriend. A gay
boyfriend is a man who will provide every essential need that your husband may not be able to give. Although he is useless for sex, a gay boyfriend has other wonderful attributes. Need a shopping buddy or a shoulder to cry on? Your gay boyfriend is your man. Though he can be just as bitchy as you, he means well and knows what is best for you, especially when it comes to fashion and decorating. These men are hard to come by so once you have one, don’t ever let him go.
HOUSEWIFE RULE #1: MAKE SURE YOUR PRESENCE IS KNOWN IMMEDIATELY AS YOU WALK INTO A ROOM. YOUR ENTRANCE IS EVERYTHING.
4. TREASURE GOOD FRIENDSHIPS. Between the high levels of estrogen and female attitude, friendships are a necessity. A friendship is a sacred relationship between two women who share common interests and qualities. However, a good one involves sharing cocktails and clothes. Though they may be different in some aspects, good friendships find common ground. A housewife knows that when the going gets tough, a girl friend is always there to listen or threaten someone. Whether she is a childhood playmate, an old college roommate or a nosy neighbor, every woman needs a good friend. They laugh, cry, shop and gossip together. And even fight together. No matter what they are doing, they are partners-in-crime. Just like the three musketeers, “one for all and all for one.”

close in fear that someone else could possibly take them away. When it comes to our friends, we get defensive and would be willing to fight, even in high heels. But, even closer than the true bonds of friendship, are the enemies. These enemies, or ‘frenemies,’ are women who at one point in time were included in the sacred circle of sisterhood. But, after the nasty rumors were spread, the culprit was revealed to be none other than one of your so-called best friends. Once a frenemy, always a frenemy. Be cordial, but don’t kiss ass. Remember, fake housewives do not exist.

She is structured and maintains a vigorous schedule of activities. No matter how stressed she gets between bake sales and charity auctions, a housewife always grits her teeth, smiles and agrees. Whether you are planning a small brunch with close girl friends or coordinating a charitable event to fight breast cancer, getting involved is a great way to gain a strong sense of pride and satisfaction, especially when it comes to appearance to others. Giving back to the community and retaining a busy schedule keeps you organized, but also helps obtain a social way of life. Your popularity will skyrocket with new friendships and social networking opportunities.

7. PAMPER REGULARLY. Among maintaining social status and managing the nanny and maid, a housewife does require downtime to regain her strength and re-energize. Though she may seem collective on the outside, the inside is chaotic and a jumbled mess. Housewives are only human and need to de-stress from hectic days around the house. What is the ultimate cure for the housewife blues? It’s called pampering. First, you must choose what relaxes you. For some women, a spa treatment such as hot oil massages or pedicures are a great way to unwind. Others may choose retail therapy. Spending the husband’s hardearned cash on a new outfit or pair of shoes may be worthwhile. For women who prefer a more simple approach to relaxation, try meditating or reading a book while indulging in a glass of red wine or your favorite cocktail. Pamper yourself as you see fit.
8. SPOIL FAMILY MEMBERS. Once a housewife has taken care of herself, the next objectives on her list involve her husband and children. Start with the kids first. Don’t just give them everything they want like material possessions. Provide various educational opportunities, even if it means moving them from free public schools to pricey private institutions. You can brag about their scholastic achievements. Nothing is too expensive for your little angels. Give them other options apart from dance lessons and sports. Sign them up for activities they would actually enjoy, like charm school. For your husband, you know what works best for him. Some men prefer a new set of golf clubs or a flat-screen television. Some like a guys-only camping trip or tickets to their favorite teams sporting event. Others just want you to stop nagging for one night and do things their way. And abide by their rules, wearing nothing. Whatever tickles your mans fancy, spoil him and do it right.
9. MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE. In order to keep up with her demanding schedule, a housewife must be in fine physical
and emotional shape. One of the most important parts of health a housewife must preserve is her physical wellbeing. You must look fabulous and fit at all times, even when indulging in a dirty martini or five doughnuts. This means planning a strict daily exercise routine that works best for you. Want something more fun and exciting then the same boring jog? Try Zumba or belly dancing. The high impact of shaking your booty and hips will make you feel robust and younger. Watch the pounds and age melt away. Once your physical welfare has been taken care of, focus on the mental aspects. This is the segment of health that involves the mind, body and soul. To preserve a positive mental state, maintain a healthy sexual appetite and lifestyle, with just your husband of course. Be promiscuous and try new things. Go purchase “The Cosmo Kama Sutra” book by the editors at Cosmopolitan. Not only will you be relaxed and satisfied mentally, but so will he.
10. KEEP IT CLASSY. And last, but most certainly not least, all housewives must follow this rule. If you haven’t paid any attention to this whole article, at least understand and practice this one final rule of thumb. All housewives must act like a lady and keep it classy at all times. Ignore the name calling or subtle rude gestures. Refrain from any obscene actions such as screaming, punching or even going as far as flipping tables at an upscale restaurant. Take the high road and do not stoop to the immature level of stupidity.

Q. What was the first CD you ever owned? Kristy: I think mine was the “George of the Jungle” soundtrack. I was obsessed! Lindsey: The Spice Girls. Kristy and I dressed up as Baby Spice and Posh Spice for Halloween when we were little! Q. What was the first concert you ever went to? A. Kristy & Lindsey: When we were in kindergarten, we went to school with Gene Simmons’ kids… so our whole class went on a field trip to a KISS dress rehearsal! It was way too loud for us, so we both wore earmuffs! However…a few years later, we thought we were super cool “music pros” and our parents took us to an *NSYNC concert. We loved it and begged for Santa to bring us the *NSYNC dolls for Christmas that year… I think we still have them somewhere! Q. What event/moment would you consider your big break? A. Kristy: So far I would consider our biggest break to have been having our music featured on some awesome TV shows. “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” and “Jersey Shore” are two of my faves. Knowing that the music we’ve written can evoke emotions and enhance a scene in a TV show is a really rewarding feeling! The shows have such strong, dedicated audiences and fans, and it’s great to know that they’re connecting with our music. Lindsey: For me, I think our biggest break so far
has been having the music video for “Money Makes the Girl$ Go Round” hit No. 1 on MTV Music’s Top 100. Q. What has been your favorite venue to perform in? Kristy: It’s really funny because everybody always says if you’re nervous during a show to picture the audience naked. Well, you can’t really do that at the Playboy Mansion, because half of them already are naked! Another one of my favorites would have to be Mansion in Miami, when we shared the stage with Flo Rida. A. Lindsey: That’s a tough one because we’ve played so many amazing venues…but if I had to pick one, I guess I’d say the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles. We’ve gotten to perform with some great artists like Kevin Rudolf and Ja Rule there. The audience is always fantastic, plus it’s a blast when Hef comes to our shows! Q. With all your TV and radio appearances, what was a recent/most embarrassing moment? A. Kristy: Well…considering we call ourselves “Official Hot Mess”, where do I begin?! I guess one of the craziest things that [has] happened would have to be the time we were doing a show in NYC and we were asked to do an interview for Vh1. We found that it probably would’ve been easier to get into the White House than to get through security at the building. So after they took our finJ u n e 2011

gerprints, photographs (and most likely ran background checks) we were finally on our way…or so we thought. Apparently we didn’t scan our visitor passes properly when we went through the turnstile, and set off what sounded like every alarm in the entire building. Before we knew it, we were practically tackled by a swarm of security guards and cops! Oops! Lindsey: We were invited to a big movie premiere in Hollywood [and] we accidentally sat in Bill Murray’s seats…at the premiere of his own movie!

Kristy & Lindsey: Some of our “go to” designers are Betsy Johnson, Guess, Gasoline Glamour, Rock and Republic and Wicked Threads. Q. If you could have any super power, what would it be? A. Kristy: I think mindreading would be pretty cool! That way, I’d be able to avoid “mind games!” Lindsey: I’d want to be able to teleport or fly so I wouldn’t have to deal with airport security or long flights! Q. What is something that not a lot of people know about you that you wish they knew? A. Kristy & Lindsey: Lots of people see two blondes and automatically assume that we’re stereotypical “dumb blondes.” We actually attended a school for academically gifted students, where they test your IQ before you can even be considered for admission. We’re both in the process of getting our college educations online, while touring with OHM. Q. What is your favorite summer childhood memory? A. Kristy: Picnics at the beach, watching the sunset and going to the Siesta Key drum circle on Sundays during the summer is the best. 32

Lindsey: We always celebrated my birthday on a boat in the Gulf of Mexico on the Fourth of July (my birthday is the third). When I was little, I always thought the fireworks were for me! Q. What are you most excited about this summer? A. Kristy & Lindsey: OHM’s EP will be coming out this summer! We can’t wait for you guys to hear it! Q. Can you tell us more about the reality show that might be on the horizon? A. Kristy & Lindsey: The reality show will take you behind the scenes of “Official Hot Mess” and the outrageous shenanigans and situations we get into! It will also give you an inside look at our personal lives at home with our family. Q. Do you have boyfriends? A. Kristy: Right now, I’m single. Lindsey: Yes I do.

Why the bass:
Definitely SRQ airport in Sarasota. It’s small and everyone knows each other. Plus, I love landing there and knowing I’m home.
I love the thumping pulse of the bass. It anchors down the harmonics, lays down the beat, fills up the space between all the other instruments and locks the melody with the rhythm. Plus, people don’t usually expect a girl to play bass.
Favorite “trash TV” show: It’s not “trash TV,” but my new addictions are “Teen Mom” and “Sister Wives!” But as far as legit trash TV goes, Maury is number one! Favorite clothing store: I love buying sexy lingerie and cute panties from Victoria’s Secret. If you could be any article of clothing: I would be a fun, flirty bra…because I’m fun, flirty, uplifting and supportive.
Possibility of performing trapeze at one of your concerts: Definitely would love [to] incorporate some trapeze into our shows in the future! If you could be any article of clothing: Hmm…I’d be a really fancy bikini so I’d get to be taken on exotic vacations and handled with care.

picy foods aren’t for the faint of heart. For those who easily bore with mild fare, there is only so much drowning a meal in a puddle of hot sauce can do. Fortunately, for people with a penchant for fiery foods, Athens offers several restaurants with tasty, bold dishes. BLVD interviewed four local restaurants to give its readers the (spicy) dish on the best “hot” dining spots in town.

NONA, also known as New Orleans in Athens, “offers dishes inspired by the rich culinary traditions of Louisiana” that are “prepared with only the finest of ingredients daily.” Although manager Neil Smith says there is a major misconception that all traditional Cajun food is “blow your head off spicy,” NONA certainly offers one such dish that will surely please its diners with a pungent palate. The Abita BBQ shrimp, Smith says, isn’t just hot, but bursting with flavor. Besides being made with crushed red pepper, cayenne pepper and black pepper, the dish is not only zesty, but has a distinct flavor all its own. Abita, which is a traditional Louisiana butter-based beer, gives the BBQ shrimp a rich, unique flavor that will leave those who order coming back for more. 36

Manager Todd Douglas says that while most of Casa Mia’s dishes are not typically spicy, the restaurant adds definite spice to its dishes and salads with its uniquely delicious and equally smoldering condiments like the Blueberry Habañero sauce and Chipotle Ranch dressing. Douglas recommends requesting a sizzling sauce on the side to spice up any tapa.

For those looking for a red hot, look no further than Thai Spoon, located on North Lumpkin Street, adjacent to the Globe and Little Italy. Waitress Wendy Powell says that the Jungle Curry, a coconut curry-based entrée, is by far the spiciest thing on its menu, although anything offered at Thai Spoon can be requested to be “Thai Hot.” That being said, Powell said that Thai Spoon caters to people with mild and hot palates, and that any dish can be specially customized to be as hot or as mild as diners prefer. For vegetarians searching for a scathing meatless meal, Powell recommends ordering something with sugei, a vegetable protein that heavily absorbs flavor and spice.

Kelly’s Jerk, home to the “most authentically” cooked Caribbean cuisine in Athens, is perfect for any adventurous eater looking for a meal with a bold change of pace. Its owner, Kelly Codling, says the Jerk Chicken, Jerk Pork and Spicy Cabbage are the hottest items on the menu, giving the dishes a nine out of 10 on the spiceo-meter. Still, he says his restaurant also offer sides and dishes for those with a milder palate, like the curry barbecue chicken, collard beans, rice peas, grilled salmon and occasionally tilapia. Above all, Codling says that spice mongers should come to his restaurant first and foremost, because it is deliciously pure, made from scratch daily and free from preservatives. J u n e 2011

“AFTER YEARS OF TRIAL AND ERROR, WE FOUND EACH OTHER.”
B
en Consuegra, Matt Lewis, Jordan White and Danny Zagoria gather in the dressing room at New Earth a few hours before they perform one of several shows this week. Last night was the battle of the bands performance at the 40 Watt. An energy drink sits empty on one table, just one sign of the exhaustion the guys are feeling. Sitting down to answer a few questions quickly turns into 30 minutes of banter among four college guys. Like the band, their answers are a collaboration. They finish each other’s sentences, making jokes about each other and yelling out, “No, don’t quote me on that.” It feels like they have been together forever. But Chromazone in its current form has actually only been playing together since January. Random chance encounters, Craigslist listings and classes brought the guys together to form what White calls, “the best cuatro.” It takes about five minutes of weaving the thread of their beginnings until Consuegra sums it up, “After years of trial and error, we found each other.” The name “Chromazone” comes from a variety of stories and ideas, just like its members. White begins the story and the other band members soon interject. He begins, “Well Daniel is color blind and Greek.” Then Zagoria adds, “Yeah, his color chromosome doesn’t work.” The story, like the band, “comes from so many different directions…like a big color splash,”
-Ben Consuegra White concludes, as if that explains the name. As for the genre, Chromazone plays “electronicfused funk rock” music, or something like that. Once again, the guys all jump in to explain. Many of their songs originated from songs written by White as early as the eighth grade. Consuegra explains, “Our music is the result of us having a whole wide range of influences,” “and harvesting it all together,” Lewis finishes the thought. Explanation of their influences results in another tangent. One thing is clear. Their love for music is not lacking. Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, Talking Heads, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Depeche Mode, Tom Petty, Pink Floyd and Nirvana are just a few of their favorites. Everything from rock to funk to jazz to bluegrass has inspired their

music, producing an end result worth coming to see. Lewis says, “Go hang out with them. They’re alright.” Their energy pre-sound check thunders into something contagious. The guys discuss everything from venues in Athens to the music business program to Consuegra’s meat eating habits to White’s dislike for doughnuts. Chromazone may be a collaboration, but their music is catching on. Already, fans know “Whammy,” one of the guys’ favorites to play. Originally written by White, each of the members added something to it and the result is something distinctly Chromazone. Succeeding as a band in Athens isn’t easy. While this incredible town full of music history has advantages, competition is steep. Zagoria says, “There are a million bands but there are a million venues. The hardest part is getting people to come out.” The guys know that in the music world it is all about connections. And these four guys are very connected. Lewis, White and Zagoria are all in the Music Business certificate program at UGA. Zagoria also works at New Earth. The band is so well connected that they feel almost everyone they meet is somehow part of this incredible world of Athens music. Feeding off of each other’s energy, as well as the energy of their new band manager Gillian Furqueron, the band has high hopes for the summer. They plan to spend the next few months writing and continuing to play gigs. In just the short time they have been playing together, they have already seen a difference in the number of
gigs and popularity. Lewis said the crowd at the battle of the bands at the 40 Watt was enough to give the guys some pre-show nerves. But once they start playing, there is no denying their stage presence. Recognizing that the “electronic-fused funk rock” may be a genre that Athens is still getting used to, Zagoria explains, “Quality product goes a long way.” Chromazone is hesitant to discuss too far into the future. But the guys love music and have found something special. They even have plans for a possible August tour. As Furqueron says, “It’s a great live show.” The discussion veers off into band meetings and tonight’s performance, as well as food, drinks and politics. But once they hit the stage, the guys are all in sync. The collaboration works. Chromazone looks like it is here to stay for a while.

Local Design Talent: April Johnston’s

eauty is in the eye of the beholder, or so goes the old saying. For some, beauty may come from the details in nature or architecture. For April Johnston, beauty comes from more unusual places: decaying asylums, graveyards and morgues. Johnston, a recent graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design, has emerged as one of the South’s most promising and talented designers. Competing on “Project Runway” definitely helped with that. Johnston was the youngest contestant on the eighth season of “Project Runway,” at the ripe, old age of 22. She made it all the way to the final five and showed her collection at MercedesBenz Fashion Week, but was eliminated in the twelfth episode. Despite being eliminated, the show has done more good than harm for the young designer. “It was like a catapult,” Johnston explained. “It marketed J u n e 2011

me and my talent to the world and pushed me forward.” But that doesn’t mean it was a cakewalk. “It was a difficult experience, but I learned a lot from it,” Johnston said. “I wouldn’t change anything about my time on the show. It has helped me grow.” Of course, she had fashion’s beloved Tim Gunn to help her out. “He’s awesome, such a funny, but at the same time, polite man.” Johnston has since moved back to Savannah, where she continues designing and has started her own line, Mangled Courtesan. She recently showed her “Moth” collection at Charleston Fashion Week, which she called “amazing.” Johnston has only been designing for a few years, having only started during the middle of her high school years. But that has proven to not hinder her talent or ability. Her line, Mangled Courtesan, may not necessarily resemble other lines out there at the moment. It is much darker, deconstructed and, well, mangled. The name signifies the deconstructed and reconstructed beauty that Johnston creates. Instead of recreating beauty, Johnston is redefining it. Drawing inspiration from the misunderstood and the unknown, Johnston describes her pieces as mangled, elegant and theatrical one-of-akind designs. For her “Shes Madness” collection, Johnston looked to abandoned asylums and morgues, and the minds of patients in these facilities. The pieces in the collection were otherworldly, almost alien-like and futuristic. Lady Gaga could be seen wearing these, whom Johnston names as one of her style icons. There is no denying that Johnston is innovative and fashion forward. She is not conventional in any sense, but that is what sets her apart from the cookie-cutter designers. But while she may find inspiration in unconventional places and incorporate those darker elements into her designs, they do resemble others in one respect: romance. Having visited the city of romance itself, Paris, Johnston cannot help but love the romance embedded in the city itself, and this love comes through in her designs. They may be dark and edgy, but they are pure romance, soft and airy. Her dresses may just be the perfect attire for gothic heroines. Johnston, despite her dark collections, is not a dark or dreary person. She resides in Savannah, 42

one of the most beautiful cities in Georgia. When she’s not designing, she can be found eating at downtown restaurants, hanging out at events, galleries and parks, and maybe judging an event or two. She has become a local celebrity, but what do you expect after appearing on one of the most popular fashion shows on television? Just because her name is rising in the fashion world does not mean she will be packing up and heading to the fashion capital of the nation any time soon. “I love Savannah and would love to stay here. For now this is my home, but things could change…we will see,” Johnston said.
Savannah has been good to her, helping her creativity and providing her inspiration. She has been to New York and Paris, but hasn’t yet made it up to the Classic City. Perhaps one day she can make a visit and put a little bit of

Johnston’s passion and love for design is evident. Her work is her art and there is nothing else that she would rather be doing. “I wouldn’t be doing anything other than designing and creating,” Johnston explained. Her career has jumpstarted: first with “Project Runway,” her own line, and various shows. It is safe to say that Johnston has done quite a bit at her age, more so than most 22-year-olds. She may not be a household name yet, like the late Alexander McQueen, whom she describes as her favorite designer, but she is well on her way. For those out there wishing to make it in the fashion world, Johnston is a perfect example of how hard work, dedication and creativity can help get you there. “Don’t give up.
