The Dos and Don’ts of Sheer

L

ike the fabric itself, wearing sheer is a delicate issue. However, with anything delicate, you have to be careful. Sheer fabric requires attention, and not just in

the wash – one must be cautious when choosing a sheer garment. While sheer clothing may be a little demanding, a sheer piece that is worn right makes a

fabulous statement. On the other hand, the outfit that is a little too sheer can spark scandalous conversations. Wear it properly, and you will discover the enchanted feel sheer can provide on even the dreariest of days.

Rules of Sheer 1. Do accessorize sheer. A bold, dark statement necklace is perfectly highlighted on a light, airy top.

2. Don’t wear sheer tops on cold days – you will not only freeze, but look out of

place. While wearing sheer may help you think spring has sprung, wait until the weather literally warms up before sporting any sheer wear.

3. Do layer sheer. Lace tops work as the perfect accent under a cardigan. Also, layer up two sheer tops for a fun, safe look.

4. Don’t bring out your white chiffon top on a rainy day. With sheer, it is best to

play it a little on the safe side. After all, wet sheer clothing can make too much of a, well too sexy statement. Wear sheer when going out on those clear, cloudless nights.

5. Do wear sheer with confidence. The perfect complement to a black lacey top: confidence.

6. Don’t overdo it with sheer. Sheer clothing stands out, draws attention, and likes to be the “star” of your outfit! So whether it is the lacy top or the chiffon skirt, pick one piece to show off.

SHEAR Kate Foster

Five Hottest Hairstyles The Angled Bob. Shorter in the back and longer in the front, this sexy style flatters everyone - watch as it softens a sharp jaw and adds shape to an ultra-round face. Plus, it’s so chic that it’s timeless. You’ll never look back on your bob days with regret. Keira Knightley and Jennifer Aniston have pulled this look off recently. The Layered Blowout. After Kate Middleton and Prince William wed last April, royalty fanatics and hair connoisseurs alike were feeling talkative. Kate’s classic long layers looked healthy, shiny and worthy of the crown. Lucky for you, because this look is incredibly easy to get - and pull off.

The Straight Bang. Looking for something edgy yet sophisticated? Imagine some heavy fringe swept across your forehead, landing just below your eyebrows. Bangs similar to Florence Welch’s or Zooey Deschanel’s will transform you into that cool girl that dates musicians and actors. Guaranteed.

The Long Boho. The easiest hairstyle of them all, and the most versatile. Keep hair long and layered, à la Mila Kunis and Vanessa Hudgens, and work any type of texture you desire. Beachy waves are especially effective.

The Swooped Pixie. Pixie cuts can very easily fall into the 90’s category. The key to keeping it 2012? Long, swooping, side-swept bangs with wispy, fringed hair on the sides and back. If you’ve got an oval- or heart-shaped face like Michelle Williams or Emma Watson, you can no doubt pull off this hip downtown-cool trend.

1RĈ'DPDJH '\LQJ )URP 'DUN WR /LJKW s .OTE IT IS ()'(,9 RECOMMENDED THAT THOSE GOING MORE THAN THREE SHADES LIGHTER GET HAIR professionally colored! But if you’re dying – pardon the pun – to do it at home, or just want to understand what your colorist is doing, read the steps below.

1. Find a bleach that will not damage the scalp. Many blonde dyes out of the box come with a bleach that is safe to use. This is the first step of what hairstylists call “double processing”, in which hair is first bleached to remove color, and then dyed. 2. Clean and untangle hair and put on gloves, leaving hair wet. Fill a spray bottle with the bleach. 3. Part hair into small sections and spray bleach onto hair. Try to avoid spraying directly onto

scalp.

4. After applying, comb through hair and apply a shower cap. 5. Let bleach soak in for about 15-20 minutes. Leaving it on much longer can destroy hair. 6. Rinse with cool to lukewarm water and soak hair with a conditioning treatment. Rinse after a few

minutes. Let hair air dry before using hair dye and starting the second “double processing” step.

7. Find a blonde dye that is free of ammonia, the chemical that really threatens your hair’s life. Garnier HerbaShine uses bamboo extract rather than harsh chemicals. 8. Mix dye in box according to the brand’s directions; wearing gloves, apply to hair until saturated, focusing specifically on certain sections if you desire highlights. 9. Let dye soak in for amount of time the brand specifies, then rinse in the shower until water runs clear. 10. Apply a deep conditioning treatment again, rinse, and style hair as usual. )URP /LJKW WR 'DUN 1. Find a boxed color that suits your skin tone – for tips on that, read the rest of this hair-a-palooza – and decide whether you want to go semi-permanent, demi-permanent, or permanent. 2. Put on gloves and mix chemicals in box according to the brand’s instructions. 3. Apply dye to hair, ensuring that you get the roots and tips really well. Keep applying until hair is

saturated – this may take more than one box if your hair is longer.

4. Leave dye in hair for 25-30 minutes, depending on the brand you are using. 5. Rinse hair in shower until water runs clear. 6. Soak strands in a deep conditioning treatment, letting it sit for a few minutes. 7. Rinse and style hair as usual.

7KH %HVW &XW IRU <RXU )DFH 6KDSH 5RXQG )DFHV You may think the only look you can pull off involves long layers, which is absolutely a good choice, but don’t be so quick to judge – your options are far more widespread! Round-faced Ginnifer Goodwin rocks a pixie with piece-y bangs, if you’re feeling so bold, but the best thing to keep in mind when choosing a cut is that asymmetry will slim your face. Try a deep side part with heavy, side-swept bangs and layers, and you won’t go wrong with any length.

2YDO )DFHV Aren’t you lucky? You can pull off some of the edgiest looks around, including blunt bangs, a center-parted style (usually only reserved for models), even short cuts as daring as Rihanna’s.

6TXDUH )DFHV Your face is best accentuated by more classic styles, such as long, layered waves or lengthy, straight locks. A rough-and-ready shag can do wonders if you’re feeling a little rock n’ roll.

+HDUW )DFHV Like those oval-faced girls, you can pull off just about anything. A bob that stops just below your jaw will make your chin appear less angular, and a side-swept pixie cut with minimal texture is incredibly flattering. For something a little less drastic, keep classic heart-shaped Reese Witherspoon in mind; her deep side part and heavy side bangs are perfect for you.

Start with hair styled the way you always wear it. Make sure it is dry, as cutting wet hair will result in it being shorter than expected when it dries. 2. Gently a hold a section of hair between your fingers. If they are blunt bangs, hold your fingers horizontally. If they are side-swept, hold them at an angle. 3. Hold scissors vertically, and start snipping in the center of your forehead, trimming outward until you reach the outside of your bangs. Do the same on the other side. 4. Avoid snipping more than ¼ of an inch off at a time, and constantly let your bangs fall to check your progress.

6KDGHV ɄȘ 6 ȇȐɕȨȝȽȐɑ ɉɑɄсȵȐɕ Elie Saab was all about bright colors and sequins in his spring “Color Shock” collection. Silhouettes were reminiscent of the 1940s and 1950s movie starlets: feminine, ladylike and belted to show off some curves. Saab incorporated lace into the necklines and bodices of several gowns, creating sex appeal without being overtly sexy or dirty. Sheer chiffon gowns billowed and floated down the runway. Saab added tie necks to several of his billowy gowns, opting for a more seventies feel. For added glamour, Saab went for plunging necklines and high slits. Sequins were the biggest statement for Saab. Gowns were adorned with the shimmering sequins, adding glamour and drama to the colorful collection. Saab’s odd piece out, a bright blue beaded tuxedo jacket and pant provided a nice break from the gowns, but also showed a different a feel to the collection: masculinity meeting femininity.

Marchesa never fails to impress. Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig opted for 1920s glamour for Marchesa’s Spring 2012 collection. Each gown looked as though it could have come from one of Gatsby’s infamous parties. From the opening dress, a gold beaded flapper dress, to metallic silver fringe evening gown, Chapman and Craig created a collection full of vintage appeal and off-the-charts glamour. The gowns were ornate, with chiffon, tulle, and even feathers. Stand out pieces include a billowy, off-the-shoulder lavender gown with a beaded neckline, and a simple white sheath with a lace bodice and feathered shoulders; a look Lady Gaga might even wear herself. Another jaw-dropper was the black and white tulle gown that seemed to defy gravity. The sheer overlays used on several pieces revealed intricate beading and crystal work on gowns underneath. Exquisite, sophisticated and intriguing, Marchesa delivered with another beautifully designed collection.

Designers embraced the airy look for their spring collections, incorporating lace, chiffon and parachute silk into gowns, trousers and even tuxedos. This spring, sheer is in. Check out the designers below to see how they made the sheer look their own.

The Olsen twins have cemented their legitimacy as fashion designers in the four years since the launch of their label, The Row. The Row took a simple and minimalist approach to its Spring 2012 collection. Whites and pastel shades of blush and green dominated the runway. Taking inspiration from Tibet and an exhibition of Nick Cave’s Soundsuits, the twins created tunics over sheer pants, evoking the traditional Buddhist monk wardrobe. Sheer fabrics draped over the models’ shoulders gave an airy feel to the entire collection. Stand out pieces included a tuxedo over trousers and a white caftan. The caftan, adorned with crystal and silver beads at the bodice resembled a wedding dress. The overall collection, though limited in number compared to other designers, was a sophisticated and elegant example of the beauty of fabric.

Vera Wang may have designed Kim Kardashian’s failed fairytale wedding dress, but the famous bridal designer created another realm of fairytale with her Spring 2012 collection. Wang created collection understated, but sophisticated looks incorporating sheer fabrics to give an illusion of airiness. Gowns made from sheer silk trailed and billowed along the runway. Oversized eyelets, gauzy leggings and skirts made from sheer parachute silk revealing hints of skin dominated the runway. The collection was light and airy, and the models looked as though they could simply float away. Wang began with white, but then moved to bold patterns in her silk and organza dresses towards the end. The effect was the same though. Wang’s collection was romantic and whimsical.

From Skin to Lips-Use Neutral Tones to Enhance Natural Beauty

I

t’s every girl’s dream to look effortlessly beautiful and sheer makeup looks allow you to do just that. A little makeup can play up your best features and hide any trouble spots. So how do you get the natural look? It’s all

about color choices and application. Sheer makeup revolves around browns and pinks, but working with a neutral palate doesn’t have to limit you to

just one or two different looks. There are enough colors within the pink and brown families to create many different looks and highlight different areas of your face. Another good thing about sheer makeup: the subtle colors are harder to mess up, so you don’t need to be a skilled makeup artist to look like a natural beauty.

Pretty Pouts Bringing attention to your lips with a tinted pout that looks natural is easy to achieve. After applying primer to your lips, apply lip balm with a lip brush. The lip brush creates smoothness without harsh lines. The lip balm adds color without looking too glossy. Start from the center and blend towards the outer corners for seamless lips. When it comes to color, brighter pinks look pretty on lighter skin, while deeper

brownish pinks look great on darker skin. Also remember that lip stains sit more smoothly on well moisturized lips. So use one with moisturizing capabilities, like Neutrogena Revitalizing Balm, $9. When you wear color on your lips you want to keep your eyes as toned down as possible. So either skip the eye shadow completely or wear a shade that is slightly darker than your own skin tone. Apply over your entire lid as well as the upper and lower inner corners of your eyes.

Flawless Skin Everyone knows that less is more when it comes to natural looking makeup, but that doesn’t mean you have to be afraid of primer, concealer, and foundation. Light and well-blended application is key and determines whether your skin appears fresh and smooth or cakey.

Warm Eyes

Smoky eyes provide lots of drama but a neutral eye is also alluring. Apply primer to lids then draw a thin line with dark brown eyeliner a little bit below your bottom lashes, to make your eyes look bigger. Don’t line the inner corners for a more natural look. Next, coat your lids with a shimmery shade of eye Primer should always be applied to shadow in a light brown or golden clean skin after a moisturizer. It may color, like Champagne or Sun City be tempting to skip this step but by Covergirl. These warm shades primer works to keep your makeup look great on all skin tones. Then define and shape your brows with clear or brown brow After applying primer and concealer, gel. Next, apply a thin coat of your spread foundation on your entire favorite lengthening and curling face to create an even and flawless mascara. Lastly, put some nude lip look. When applying, use a sponge balm and you’re done! and start in the middle of your face and work your way outwards. Many foundations, like Clinique Makeup Better, $24, contain SPF to protect skin and improve skin condition. When applied lightly, the skin trio works together to even out skin and create a flawless canvas that will last all day.

Rosy Cheeks Blush is a great way to add color to your face and still look extremely natural. When applying blush it is important to use a color that looks natural against your skin tone. Generally lighter pinks work for lighter skin, peachy tones work for olive skin, and bronze tones work for darker skin. Blush comes in many different forms, but a powder one, like Revlon ColorStay Mineral Blush, is easy to apply and won’t look oily later in the day. When putting on blush, use a true blush brush instead of the small one that comes with the blush. A blush brush is larger and will prevent you from having to swipe your cheeks many times, which can cause uneven application. First coat your brush with blush and shake off any excess before applying to your face. Then start with the apples of your cheeks and sweep upwards towards your temples. This creates a natural looking flush. Never sweep downward. If you happen to overdo it, applying a little translucent powder to your cheeks can tone down the effect. To avoid looking like a clown use a nude color balm on your lips and matte shadow on your lids.

N

ails are a girl’s best accessory, hands down. With spring coming up, it’s time to kiss those wintery hues goodbye and bring in the breezy shades of warmer weather. No matter what skin tone you have, there’s a sheer color just waiting to be tried. Women with dark skin tones should make use of colors with a golden hue such as Deborah Lippmann’s ‘Diamonds and Pearls,’ ‘Nefertiri,’ and ‘No More Drama.’ These glamorous shades can we worn day or night and will accentuate any outfit. If you’re feeling fun, try ‘Yellow Brick Road,’ a sheer mellow yellow that will bring out the beauty of darker skin. If gold doesn’t work for you try OPI shades ‘In the Spotlight Pink, and ‘I Juggle Men.’ Debbie Howell, nail technician for Arbor Spa of Athens, says, “Those with darker skin look great in light pearly pinks.”

Turquoise is often a popular spring/ summer color, and MAC just introduced ‘Hyperion.’ a pastel turquoise that brings a little enchantment to your look. Just the names of these polishes alone would make anyone curious to try. For women who have a rich olive or medium skin tone, earthy colors are the way to go. MAC and Mother Nature got together to offer ‘Immortal Gold,’ ‘Sandpi per’ and ‘Endless Night,’ all shades that include beautiful metallic undertones and sheer pastels that add an edgy look to that breezy spring ensemble. Deborah Lippmann’s color, ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ is a salmon, sheer shimmer that creates the perfect flush of color for a night out with friends. The great thing about lighter skin tones is that they can wear sheer shades without appearing washed

out or too light. Nude colors are the perfect way to compliment this delicate beauty. Deborah Lippmann offers a beautiful beige called ‘Naked’ which, according to the famous nail fashionista, is a personal favorite of hers for this side of the skin tone spectrum. “It is the most glorious compliment to alabaster skin,” said Lippmann on her personal blog. ‘Shape of My Heart’ is a color that Lippmann designed with Women’s SHAPE Magazine to help in the fight for breast cancer. Not only does it bring a beautiful pop of blush to your look, but it supports women and their fight against breast cancer. Nails can be a woman’s greatest fashion accessory! Howell says that you should always have your nail technician help you decide what shade to wear with your skin tone to maximize your look. Take the time and look at everything out there and you’re sure to come up with just the right look to compliment your spring wardrobe.

Happy shopping ladies!

pring is finally here, giving us a break from the dull weather, bundles of clothes and lack of accessories. With the weather changing, you may find yourself wondering what to wear with your new spring wardrobe, but have no fear, spring accessories are as simple and breezy as the weather. With necklaces, rings, bracelets, and earrings all staples in your spring wardrobe forecast, you should never see another dull day. These trends allow you to keep your wardrobe as light and flirty as you are. If you find yourself gazing at a long layered beautiful necklace wondering what to wear it with, worry no more. Spring’s light colors and sheer fabrics allow for these types of necklaces to be paired with almost any solid top or dress. The necklaces add a sophisticated look to your outfit, or keep it light and flirty with their subtlety. Even better than the multiple options this accessory adds to your wardrobe is its ability to be found in almost any boutique or department store in Athens.

One of the hottest trends for spring is the wrap bracelet. This new spin on the simple bracelet can be seen in boutiques downtown everywhere including Flirt, Encore, and Pitaya. You can pair this bracelet with any day outfit and it gives an edge to your accessories. Its winding layers around your wrist complement your easy-going side with its simple look, while adding a subtle intricacy without being overbearing. Luckily for us, the wrap bracelet has a relative in the form of a watch. These watches serve two purposes: getting us to work on time and keeping us up to date with fashion. Both the watches and bracelets come in a variety of colors allowing you to don a bold bright one or keep a low profile with a muted tone. The more layers and details on the bracelets simply add to the diverseness of the piece. Owner of Athens’ boutique Flirt, Ashley Becker predicted the watches to be a big hit based off of their recent popularity in her store. Be sure to check them out before these lovely watches find a home on someone else’s wrist! While bold cocktail rings have been all the rage, a new fad is trending. Bigger is not better, but more is. Stackable rings are now a creative way to wear multiple bands on only one finger. The thin bands can be worn to imitate a larger statement ring, or the large stack can be sheared to expose a smaller one. If you are having trouble locating these new finger decorations, look no further than downtown’s conveniently located boutique: Encore. The boutique’s owner said there would be plenty to choose from for spring. Earrings are making a comeback in a larger variety. Look for elongated pairs with multiple colors and designs to wear with your spring outfits. The options are endless when it comes to what you can choose from with this accessory, and they’ve been spotted in stores from Claire’s to Charlotte Russe, and many downtown boutiques. While these earrings complement your outfit, they also attract eyes to your face, making them the best wingman for a woman. In case you’ve been wondering what that odd, new gold color popping up everywhere is called, we’re already on it. This hot new metal on the street is rose gold. It is showing up everywhere from watches to shoes. So when you’re tired of donning gold, why not try the more feminine version? It seems to be catching fast and is sure to be a staying trend.

pring Break is coming quickly, and it is time to prepare our closets for the perfect wardrobe. From bright colors to sheer lace, bold patterns to wallpaper designs, our favorite designers have created the perfect pieces for warm days out on the beach or the cruise ship.

Retro is in this season, with high-waisted pants, skirts and wallpaper floral designs thought to have been long since thrown away. Marc Jacobs created a pale, powder blue top, paired with a pair of high-waisted pants that accentuate a tiny waist. The wallpaper floral design gives the outfit a charming flare that is sure to be noticed while you’re out on a stroll along the beach. Jason Wu creates the perfect evening ensemble with a short, classy, black and white cocktail dress accented with a white wallpaper floral design. Burberry showed a high-waisted, burnt orange pencil skirt anyone would want to wear to lunch on a sun-drenched deck. Tory Burch mixes two bold prints in rich blue and salmon, creating a dress that is sure to be noticed everywhere you go. Gucci’s Frida Giannini looked into the Gucci photo archives from the 50s and 60s to create this spring’s Resort Collection. She combined a black and white, tropicalprinted top with purple and white paisley drawstring pants for a hip, night-out-with-the-girls look. Sheer lace and tulle make those hot days a little more bearable with two designs from BCBG and Louis Vuitton. BCBG takes black and white to create a swimsuit cover-up that has a tribal and chic feeling in breathable material. With a cover-up like

this, you will become the star of the beach. Vuitton designed a short suit using a sheer indigo lace. These bermuda shorts are sure to offer comfort from the oppressive heat, while looking perfectly pretty as you stroll through downtown or across the island. Sporty is huge this season, according to designers like Michael Kors, Balenciaga and Derek Lam. The Kors Resort Collection was inspired by the bright city of Sydney, and it is perfect for a day out on the beach. Kors designed a lime green and black scuba dress that could be worn out on the beach or even in the city when paired with the perfect shoes. According to the Kors Resort Collection, this season is all about versatility. A bright pink swimsuit with zebra stripes provides a vibrant flare of color and design. His lime green and black striped cover-up will be on the lips of every beachgoer. Balenciaga takes a college favorite, track shorts, and puts the ultimate chic twist on them. Silk blouson track shorts and a sheer top are fun to wear to the beach, while also giving you a sophisticated and elegant air. Derek Lam takes a pair of simple board shorts and pairs them with a classy tank, creating a fashionable surfer-girl look. An all-time favorite, Vera Wang, designed a tank-dress with an asymmetrical hem and layered it with a pair of sporty racing pants for a fun resort ensemble. This spring break is going to be one of the most fashionable yet. These designers and so many more have set the stage for this spring holiday’s fashion. Taking these trends and color ideas, you can create the perfect ensembles for your cruise or road trip to the beach!
