ow often do you find yourself carrying an extra tote with an entirely new outfit so that you can go from work or school to a night out on the town? Bid adieu to the baggage, and transform your look with a simple style tweak.

STYLE TIP #1

A trendy winter daytime outfit can easily turn into a sleek look for a night out with friends. Put on your favorite sweater dress, taking care to choose a cooler tone that can carry you through the night, like grey. Pair it up with a pair of boots that will keep you warm as well. During the day, accessorize it with a light scarf. But for the evening, toss the scarf and choose a long necklace in its place. You can layer necklaces to achieve a more glamorous appeal.

STYLE TIP #2

A full day of classes and other commitments can leave you exhausted by the time you have to think about dressing for a party downtown. Begin your day with a sparkly, sequined tunic length top paired with dark leggings and some comfy flats. For the party, simply remove the leggings and touch up your makeup, and you look stunning.

STYLE TIP #3

For a more casual event, d dress in your typical school outfit. A pair of snug jeans with a solid colored Henley—a tight, collarless pullover— and flats or sneakers. After school, spice up your outfit in two simple steps by adding on a bomber jacket and some layered necklaces.

STYLE TIP #4

Making it on time to a date after work can be stressful, especially if you are working longer hours. Relax—your work outfit already has all the components of a potentially sexy date look. Match a dark woolen skirt with a loose-fitting, gossamer blouse. Slip your feet into a pair of sultry boots, and you are ready for work. For after-hours, change out the blouse for a tighter, flashier top, and you will be ravishing for your date.

STYLE TIP #5

If you prefer to wear pants, t your work slacks can keep you trendy late into the night. Pair the slacks with a sequined bandeau top. For work hours, cover the top with a bright cardigan, leaving the top buttons undone to display your sparkle. Afterward, swap the cardigan out with a low cut blazer that hugs your body tightly. You can even leave the buttons tantalizingly undone.

Juggling commitments is tough, but simplifying your wardrobe can be one less stress. You can easily go from day to night with a few simple alterations and still be beautiful and trendy.

BATH BOMBS

A

s easy and fun as gift giving can be, it is not always so joyous for your bank account. Our modern economy makes it difficult for even the best gift giver. For those of us who are crafty, making gifts is often the natural alternative. Even these projects, however, are sometimes costly, and there’s always the risk of turning out a shoddy gift. Thinking of an affordable, universally pleasing gift seems daunting, but that’s where BLVD can help. Today’s solution: the bath bomb. What exactly are bath bombs? They are hard-packed, effervescent balls, which when placed in water, experience a chemical reaction. People use them to add therapeutic qualities, such as color, fragrance and, occasionally, skin moisturizer, to their bath. These are very trendy right now, and vendors like Lush sell them at outrageous prices, often $5 to $8 per bomb. These luxury goods are actually fairly cheap to make in large quantities, and everyone - male or female - could use a little bit of luxury. There are some important things to consider, however, before embarking on your crafty quest. Firstly, bath bombs are made with chemicals that chemically react, so they can be tricky. A variety of environmental factors can make an entire batch go awry, such as room temperature, humidity and oil viscosity. The good thing, though, is that you’ll probably buy enough of your ingredients that you will have enough to make multiple batches and get it right. Plus, most of the ingredients are cheap.

THINGS YOU WILL NEED: Glass Bowl, Whisk or Pestle, Glass Jar (not required, but immensely helpful), a Mold

DRY INGREDIENTS: WET INGREDIENTS: 1 cup Baking Soda 3/4 cup Citric Acid 1/4 cup Bath Sea Salt (finely ground) 1/2 cup Cornstarch 1/3 cup Powdered Milk The powdered milk helps to moisturize skin. If you wanted to, you could also add glitter or something decorative like that. For ideas, check out your favorite bath bomb vendor’s products.

1 tsp Cocoa Butter 1 tsp Shea Butter 2.5 tbs of Cherry Kernel or Vegetable Oil 1-2 drops of Food Coloring (color will appear dark, but turn out light; too much will color the tub!) 2 tsp Essential Oil (skin safe) The cocoa and shea butter also help to moisturize skin. The food coloring is to make them pretty, while the essential oils add a delightful scent. Be careful with these oils, however. It is important to get oils that are skin safe

STEP ONE:

STEP TWO:

STEP THREE:

STEP FOUR:

STEP FIVE:

Blend your dry ingredients in a glass bowl. The bowl should be glass because glass is non-reactive. Trust me. Use a pestle or whisk to combine the dry ingredients until there are no more clumps and the mixture is smooth

Blend all of your wet ingredients together. This is when a small glass jar becomes really helpful because you can just shake them up. Be aware that the oils will cause some separation in the emulsion, so the mixture will not be blended fully. The result is something like oil and vinegar salad dressing.

While whisking, very slowly pour the wet emulsion into the dry mixture. If you add the liquid too fast, the mix will begin to foam, signaling a chemical reaction. Should this occur, and it probably will your first time, quickly whisk the foaming area into the nonreactive mix. To make it easier, you can try adding only a tsp of the emulsion at a time. When you’re done, the mix should be like damp sand that clumps in your hands.

At this point, you must quickly press the mix into your molds. To get a traditional sphere shape, try using an empty christmas tree ornament. They are sold at craft stores with the purpose of being filled with tinsel and what-not. You can also buy silicon mold treys made for candy or chocolate production. They sell them in all kinds of shapes. If you use a mold like this, leave the mix in the mold until it dries or it will fall apart when you take it out.

Put in bath and enjoy!

e rarely admit it, but dating is awkward. It really is. Sure there are some exciting aspects, like getting to know someone on a more personal level, and having the chance to try something new and exciting. But, there are plenty of unpleasant things about the initial stages of dating. From figuring out the perfect outfit to wear to deciding what to do on the actual date, there is a large amount of time spent worrying. What if there is no conversation? Or worse, what if your date is a complete jerk? Then, there are the post-date mind games of whether or not he or she liked you. Or what to do if they like you, but you don’t like them? Plenty of dating scenarios exist to occupy your mind for hours and leave you feeling exhausted.

From the mind torture to the possible situation of rejection, why do we subject ourselves to this unnecessary madness? The answer can be best described by Sarah Jessica Parker in the Sex & the City TV series: we are all “looking for love. Real love. Ridiculous, inconvenient, consuming, can't-live-withouteach-other love. While the dating process may never become less worrisome, girls and guys often feel that there are things that the opposite sex could do to make dates play out more smoothly for both parties involved. We talked to both sexes about some of the dating mistakes. Maybe the dating game would be more fun if we all played by the same rules.

A human mind honed to detect - and Coco Chanel, Donatella Versace and when a Chanel and a Karan unite? La of fashion twosomes as a compromi if it were me by myself or Jack by h

Anyone in the fashion know is aware that Vogue Editor in Chief, Anna Wintour, can make or break a career – and she is incredibly difficult to impress. California natives Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the brains behind Rodarte, were offered a meeting with Wintour after only an initial collection of ten pieces. Dressing the likes of Reese Witherspoon and Natalie Portman, the duo has described its aesthetic appeal as “soft abstractions”. Rodarte’s Spring 2012 ready-to-wear collection was no different, filled to the brim with whimsical chiffon and lace splashed with delicate florals and pastel shades.

A unique result is destined to emerge when a glassblower and doctor-to-be take a whack at fashion design; such is the case for Jack McCullough and Lazaro Hernandez, respectively. Barneys embraced the best friends and former lovers almost immediately, shooting them to fashion stardom, especially among edgy-chic, downtown types. Chloe Sevigny and Maggie Gyllenhaal are just a few of the brand’s devotees, proudly donning its structured, minimalist looks that are just sharp enough for their attitudes. Spring 2012 saw the pair sending girls down the runway clad in androgynous, yet brightly-hued power suits and leather-dominated streetwear styles.

d ultimately create - upcoming trends is an undeniably powerful force in the fashion world. Donna Karan are just a few of fashion’s most ingenious style-molders. But, what happens azaro Hernandez, one half of acclaimed fashion house Proenza Schouler, describes the art se that ultimately revolutionizes a look: “Proenza Schouler wouldn’t look the way it does imself.” The four labels below prove that sometimes the power of one just doesn’t cut it.

An intelligent person, when faced with the inability to find a great fitting pair of jeans, does some research and keeps searching. An innovative person, however, designs their own. Brit power duo David Neville and Marcus Wainwright, designers behind Rag & Bone, did just that in 2002. The line especially took hold when the two introduced womenswear in 2005 and caught the eyes of Angeline Jolie, Victoria Beckham and Cameron Diaz. As Spring 2012 spectators watched models strutting to the beat of a song created especially for the show by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, one thing was apparent: Neville and Wainwright won’t be leaving the spotlight anytime soon. Pieces like neon-orange blazers, nautical shorts and dresses are meant for the busy, modern woman to throw on and walk out the door, looking as chic as if she had mulled over her outfit for hours.

What do you get when you combine woodsy-flannel with vamped-up sex appeal? DSquared2, the product of identical twins Dan and Dean Caten’s “taste of home, where the Canadian woods meet Italian design”. The twosome is known for their eccentric fashion shows including, but not limited to, pink private jets, construction sites and western hoedowns. Their most recent show started off dry – only in terms of the atmosphere, that is. Models paraded around in voluminous, gem-hued skirts, metallic wellies and all-American plaid. By the end of the show, sprinklers burst on, creating a slick and sticky but DSquared2typical outdoorsy environment. Celebrities who adore the brand are of the caliber that need no last name – we’re talking Mariah, Christina, Rihanna, and Fergie, all women that simultaneously scream glamour and appreciate some playful downtime.

fierce pair of heels can be spotted from across the room, and if that’s not reason enough to invest in a fun pair, here are two more: supermodel length legs and sexier outfits. From heel to toe, the shoe trends for spring are fun, flirty and chic. The weather may not be warm yet, but these shoes are hot, hot, hot!

+HHOV ZLWK DQ $QNOH 6WUDS You’ll find an ankle strap on a number of styles this season, including wedges, pumps and stilettos, especially the ones featured on the runway during New York Fashion Week. Designers like Calvin Klein, Sophie Theallet and Derek Lam all featured ankle strap shoes in their shows. The thickness of the strap plays into the effect of the shoe; Thinner straps are dainty and elegant, while thicker ones are edgier. Another reason why ankle straps are so great: they hold your foot in place so there is less sliding in the shoe.

0XOWL &RORUHG +HHOV These heels are fun and vibrant making them the epitome of springtime. Multicolor heels are available in a combination of neutral colors, like the black, white, and deep mustard ones Bottega Veneta displayed on the runway during fashion week. Another option is a bold combo of entirely distinct colors, like electric blue and hot pink. Heels in a combination of bold colors provide an opportunity to mix and match with other colors you may have thought too different to pair before. A pair of shoes that already matches a number of different color items in your wardrobe? It doesn’t get more splurge-worthy than that.

&KXQN\ +HHOV Chunky heels are the product of fashion and function. They are the polar opposite of the thin stilettos, with heel widths that can be up two inches wide. This more stable shoe could easily become your wardrobe staple and the solution for dressy occasions that require more walking or standing time. The pair of chunky pink loafers with gold plates over the front got everyone’s attention during the Yves Saint Laurent show.

+HHOV ZLWK DQ $QNOH 6WUDS At some point in time, pointed-toe heels became a style associated with being strictly professional and modest. But the pointed-toes of spring prove that these heels can be as funky as the rest of them. Alexander Wang showed how chic a pointed-toe can really be with a strappy pair of white leather ones during New York Fashion Week. It’s really the fabric and colors that make a style playful or dull. Opt to wear these in bright solid colors or colorful patterns with floral or geometric designs and you’ll be right on trend.

2SHQ 7RH $QNOH %RRWLHV Booties have been in style for a while, and it doesn’t look like they are going out anytime soon. However, it isn’t likely that the booties you wore during the winter will work for the warmer months. Suede booties are for the wintertime, but booties made from colorful cloth or leather fabrics are perfect for the spring. In addition to the standard booties, open-toe and openheel booties are top styles for spring. Rag and Bone showcased a pair of white and orange open-toe ankle booties during fashion week.

How to Spruce up an Outfit without going Overboard

:

hile creating an outfit may seem simple and mindless, some expertise is required to look like a true fashionista. One skill that is crucial in the fashion world: balance. Yes, balancing an outfit is finding that happy or aesthetically pleasing place in the middle of overdone and underdone. With a few tricks of the trade, you will never be caught wearing too much or too little.

Know the attire. The first step to not wearing something over the top or too simple is assessing where you are going and the unofficial dress code. In other words, you need to know when to wear the bright colors and sparkly jewelry, and when to keep it clean. Obviously, funerals, job interviews and the like require you to dress conservatively. However, conservative dress does not mean boring. A black or gray ensemble can veer towards the “too little” zone. Consider adding a splash of color and a simple, yet elegant piece of jewelry. On the other hand, outings with friends, such as parties and dinner dates, present the opportunity for you to be bold and wear showy outfits.

Make a Statement. A “too little” outfit most likely lacks a statement piece – or a piece that draws the eye. A statement piece is often jewelry, but could also be a belt, scarf or striking pair of pumps. A flashy accessory is a great way to get out of your comfort zone if you typically play it safe. For example, jeans and a tee shirt pair great with a colorful scarf. Another idea for the classic dresser is to pair a large turquoise necklace with a white blouse and black pants. You will feel updated and elegant, yet still in your element.

Colorful Combo. Sometimes a “too much” outfit is an ensemble of multiple colors and abundant patterns. While color is definitely recommended, a rainbow is not. It works best to select two to three colors, but different shades of the same color are also a fun way to dress. Pair pink and camel together for a perfect contrast. Or, try different shades of blue –from light to navy. Animal prints paired with both polka dots and stripes can lead to a visual headache. Instead of all three, consider just one and let the print or pattern shine solo.

Confidence. If you find yourself feeling a little out of place with your outfit of choice, have no fear and find some confidence near. The poise of confidence is key to pulling off multiple patterns, layers of jewelry and bright colors. And remember, while you want others to admire, compliment and mimic your outfit, you are thinking about what you are wearing way more than anyone else is. With that being said, continue to be a showstopper with your outfits – especially when you strike that balance!

Sunglasses are a must-have fashion accessory. They not only protect your eyes from the sun, but also add a bit of flair to any outfit. It doesn’t have to be spring or summer to rock a great pair of sunglasses. Below are a few of BLVD’s favorite styles and some tips on picking out the right pair of sunglasses for you.

5RXQG: Round sunglasses made a comeback in 2009 when they were seen all

over the runways and in fashion spreads. Full-on circle lenses, or even goggle-like lenses, are reminiscent of the 1970s. Think John Lennon. So, if you’re looking for a hippie-chic look, try these out. But, if you have a round face, it’s best to avoid this style as it’ll only emphasize and exaggerate your face shape. These work best on square or longer faces.

2YHUVL]HG: A starlet staple, the oversized sunglasses trend hasn’t left. From

Jackie O. to the Olsen twins, the style has been worn by the chic. It adds an air of mystery and gives you that celebrity look. Be careful when choosing a pair of oversized shades though, as they can sometimes overwhelm the face. Make sure they’re in proportion with your face size and pick a frame style that will work with your face shape. Rule of thumb: go for frames that are the opposite of your face shape.

([DJJHUDWHG Cat-eye: One of the ultimate retro looks, the exaggerated cat-eye

will make you want to put on your headscarf and go for a ride in your convertible like Grace Kelly. If you have a square, triangle, or diamond-shaped face, then the cat-eye is the perfect look for you. Try them in bold frame colors or even tortoise shell for the 1950s chic look.

$YLDWRUV: Aviator sunglasses are the ultimate cool look. Remember seeing Tom

Cruise, Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards all sporting the aviators in “Top Gun?” Luckily, almost any face shape can pull off this style. So, put on a pair and be prepared to be cool.

:D\IDUHUV: The classic sunglass look. The wayfarers became popular in the

1950s and 1960s, and they still have that retro look and feel to them. Thank goodness the style made a comeback in the 2000s. When picking out a pair of wayfarers, make sure that the frames are trapezoidal. There are a lot of look a likes out there, but wayfarers are traditionally trapezoidal in shape. They tend to look good on most face shapes, but try a few on to see which ones you like best. The style of the sunglasses is the first step. Now you have the choice of picking out the color and the material. Go for bold colors if you want to add some “pop” to your look. Pick out classic colors, like brown or black, to go with any outfit. Tortoise shell is another great option, as it adds a bit of a vintage feel. If you want the supreme retro look with an intellectual feel, try horn-rimmed glasses. Remember, your face shape plays an important role in determining which sunglass style will work best for you. Different face shapes should look for frames that balance out the face. For example, long faces should avoid long and narrow rectangular frames, as this will only exaggerate the length. Square faces should stick to oval frame shapes to soften the angles. Though there’s a lot to consider when buying sunglasses, remember to have fun trying on different pairs.
