The Cultural Centre’s Autumn program brings a raft of opportunities to be inspired by the best visual arts of the Blue Mountains.

Exhibitions by Nick Stathopoulos The semblance of things and Adrianne Doig’s It’s All About Me!, present their take on the power of the portrait, while our team of volunteers have expertly selected works from the Cultural Centre’s very own Fine Art Collection in the exhibition An Inside View. This exhibition showcases some of the Cultural Centre’s most popular artworks and provides an insight into the value of this ever-growing collection.

Don’t miss the annual Collectors’ Edition #9 fundraiser auction. This is your opportunity to not only add to your own fine art collection but also support the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre in building its collection for future generations.

This year’s diptych format has brought a whole new level of artistic ingenuity to the exhibition. Come along to the opening event on Friday 14 April where you will have the opportunity to unveil your favourite artist’s work, and then again to the closing auction on Friday 28 April to place your final bids and take part in the excitement as the top artworks go under the auctioneer’s hammer.

Leanne Tobin

Ngalawan – We Live, We Remain: The Call of Ngurra (Country)

With the funds raised from this years’ Collectors’ Edition #9 we are seeking to purchase a work by respected Buruberong and Wumali artist, Leanne Tobin. Tobin is a multidisciplinary artist of Irish, English and Aboriginal heritage who has positively impacted local communities and institutions through her tireless activism and collaboration. Her art practice seeks to encourage an open and honest dialogue about the past and to nurture, respect, and care for Country, paying homage to our Old People and their legacy.

When speaking of the prospective acquisition, Tobin expressed, “by highlighting the ancient pathways the burra (eels) take, we acknowledge their survival and persistence. Despite (the) disruptions to the river flow resulting in dangerous blue-green algae bloom and the ongoing extraction of the rivers’ precious resources, the burra’s age-old life cycle continues. The intricate relationship with these primordial creatures is shared, not only by Dharug and other Aboriginal peoples, but also by other nations across the world.”

Into the Blue

In 2000, the Greater Blue Mountains area was added to the World Heritage List in recognition of the exceptional diversity and integrity of its eucalypt forest communities.

The Blue Mountains Cultural Centre features Into the Blue (the Blue Mountains World Heritage Interpretive Centre). This high tech and interactive exhibition introduces audiences to the richness and wonders of the Blue Mountains World Heritage area. Explore the people and places of this unique area through stories which tell of the natural as well as the social landscapes.

Blue Mountains Portraits 2023

Blue Mountains Portraits is the Cultural Centre’s annual celebration of the local community and its diverse members. The exhibiting artists portray the unique people that make up the cultural fabric of the Blue Mountains and tell the stories behind the person. Over thirty artworks in a broad range of styles and media such as painting, photography, drawing, collage and mixed media are exhibited along with a selection of local students’ work.

The semblance of things: portraits by Nick Stathopoulos 4 Feb – 2 Apr

The semblance of things is a comprehensive survey of Nick Stathopoulos’ portraits from the past 30 years documenting the evolution of his hyper-real style. The artist delves beneath the painted surface, revealing psychological insights and reaching beyond the superficial likeness of a portrait. As well as the curated selection of portraits, the exhibition includes archival photographs, sketchbooks, and video clips. Subjects include celebrities Isla Fisher, David Stratton, Barry Crocker, Shaun Tan, Grahame Bond (Aunty Jack), Mr. Squiggle, and many more. This is the first time these portraits have been exhibited together, with works ranging in scale, from the blockbuster Archibald finalists to more intimate and personal work.

ADRIENNE DOIG: IT’S ALL ABOUT ME!

Through the lens of self-portraiture, Blue Mountains-based artist Adrienne Doig tackles the everyday with good humour and wit. Her survey exhibition Adrienne Doig: It’s All About Me! draws upon the past three decades of the artist’s practice, which fuses historical references and humour to respond to the everyday and reflect on now.

Using a variety of media, including embroidery, appliqué, sculpture and video, Doig playfully explores intimate aspects of her life, from having a cup of tea to performing mundane housework. Embedded within her practice are layered responses to universal themes that have social, environmental, and political narratives. By manipulating, reworking, and combining imagery from multiple sources, Doig records her own experiences within a larger context. Hence, It’s All About Me!

Collectors’ Edition #9

Now in its 9th year, this fundraiser exhibition supports the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre’s Collection Acquisition Fund. This year the format is changing to a diptych (2 hinged panels). Completed works will be folded and wax-sealed for the exhibition opening. These original artworks will be for sale through silent auction. Once a bid is placed on an artwork this will allow the wax seal to be broken, revealing the artwork inside. Take this opportunity to start your own collection while supporting the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre.

ARTEXPRESS

27 May – 16 Jul

ARTEXPRESS brings together a selection of outstanding student artworks developed for the artmaking component of the HSC examination in Visual Arts in NSW. The exhibition celebrates student achievement and aims to connect communities through the visual arts. The works provide insights into issues that are important to the young artists, such as cultural and gender identity, mental health, notions of home, social media, globalisation and climate change.

In 2023 we are showcasing the work of 43 students from across NSW including work by students local to our region.

Ida Jaroš and Bette Misfud: Shifting Screens

24 Jun – 13 Aug

Shifting Screens is a collaboration between Ida Jaroš and Bette Mifsud containing over 60 urban and rural landscapes photographed from moving vehicles. It engages with the fleeting nature of human life, and the navigation of its uncertain terrains.

Ida Jaroš’ Commuter works are shot from Western Sydney trains. Her layered, impalpable and disconcerting urban landscapes contain transparent distortions and reflections. Bette Mifsud’s Breathing Rain is her requiem for the ravages of climate change, and recent personal loss, trauma and grief.

Q&A with Adrienne Doig

Artistic Program Leader, Rilka Oakley, chats with Adrienne Doig about her upcoming exhibition It’s All About Me! and learns how living in a World Heritage National Park influences her work and environmentalism.

Rilka Oakley: Your work is very self-referential. I know you do this playfully, but can you explain how this started? What are the benefits of portraying yourself?

Adrienne Doig: My focus on self-portraiture has evolved over time. Looking back, I realise I was making self-portraits before I was fully aware of that aspect to the work. Of course, most art is autobiographical in nature but I have dialled up the self-obsession! It’s like a gag that gets funnier each time you see it.

Also, through this repetition perhaps the work becomes less about me and more about you. How the viewer feels about the work, identifies and interprets, makes it about them.

Using a wide variety of mediums allows me to have fun and highlight the playful nature of the work. Experiments with ideas and materials show the changing nature of identity and can bring different interpretations.

RO: How does living in a world heritage area and the natural environment influence your work?

AD: The natural environment is very important in my work. I am aware of the great privilege of living and working on spectacular Dharug and Gundungurra country. Experiences in nature are part of my day to day.

My work includes the everyday and routine alongside more unexpected events like bushfires or encounters with wildlife. Quite often native species come into the picture bringing further awareness of environmental issues. Hopefully my imaginings allow viewers to recall their own experiences or feelings of being in nature.

RO: You use a lot of recycled material to make work. Is this a form of environmental activism?

AD: I’m very conscious of using materials carefully not creating waste. Reusing, recycling and repurposing has become a feature of my work.

Happily a chance find can sometimes trigger a whole new interest or way of working. Discarded needlework tapestries became the series Picture Me, where I inserted myself into other people‘s work. More recently a bag of velvet scraps has been transformed into my Self-portrait as a Goddess works.

In the large installation of Everyday Me cut-out figures are made out of fruit boxes that come from Todarellos with the weekly shop.

These small acts of consciousness sometimes combined with imagery that relates to environmental issues can become a form of activism. I make the work using materials that come to hand and from my engagement with my surroundings.

Zines are self-published printed works around a theme that can include illustrations, poetry, writing, comics, or photography. We will have stalls from zine makers and creatives from around Australia and a zine-making station so you can even make your own zine on the day.

Meet the team

Introducing you to some of the newest team members you will see working in and around the Cultural Centre, we asked them why they love working here!

Hayley Zena Poynton Curator

Can you tell us a bit more about the career path that led you to this role as Curator?

My formal studies began in the painting studios at Sydney College of the Arts where I completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours). After my undergraduate study I started working in the industry as a practicing artist, participating in group shows and volunteering at any gallery that let me. Before relocating to the Blue Mountains I worked at the Art Gallery of NSW, and was a director at STACKS Projects, Potts Point and AIRspace Projects, Marrickville.

The end goal was always to curate, but it was important to me that my methodologies developed from an artist’s perspective and that I had a practice of my own. I then went on to study a Masters of Curating and Cultural Leadership at UNSW Art and Design, and under the direction of a few keys mentors I really started to develop my personal curatorial modus operandi.

What does an average weekend look like for you?

I usually spend the first half of Saturday and Sunday seeing friends over lunch alongside a gallery visit. If time permits, we either visit the local native plant nurseries or go for a bush walk. The afternoons are reserved for sacred gardening time and quality time at home.

Gallery Café

The Gallery Café aims to operate with sustainability and environmentally friendly practices, providing a garden to table dining experience. The menu reflects these intentions through showcasing local and Indigenous produce as well as ingredients sourced from the Cultural Centre’s roof top garden.

ROAST PUMPKIN AND COUSCOUS SALAD

For this InSight issue, we have selected a roast pumpkin and couscous salad which has quickly become one of our staple Autumnal dishes to serve in the Gallery Cafe.

INGREDIENTS – MAKES 4-6 PORTIONS:

1 x medium butternut pumpkin, roasted

2 x cups pearl couscous, cooked as per package directions

1 x cup salad greens of your choice

1 x small red onion, finely sliced into half-moons

Fresh parsley and coriander to taste

Olive oil

Method:

1. Combine the pumpkin, couscous, red onion and salad greens into a bowl and toss until mixed well.

2. Drizzle with olive oil and add salt and pepper to taste.

3. Garnish with the fresh parsley and coriander. Can be served warm or cold.

Peta uses papier mache sculpture, mixed media and scrolls to explore shape shifting as a metaphor for physical and psychological change experienced through life cycle changes and illness.

LOOKOUT encapsulates Jennie’s exploration and rediscovery of the natural landscape of the Blue Mountains from the time of pandemic lockdowns.

Abstraction and Ambiguity

In Abstraction and Ambiguity, Laurent’s steel sculptures propose multiple possible interpretations – mostly along marine themes. All works are made from recycled steel, some of which has been scavenged from the bushlands of the Blue Mountains.

The Art of Foraging

Foraging for fragments of the natural world, locally & beyond, is an absorbing activity for Louise and Cathie. Among the items collected are leaves, weeds, seeds, pods, discarded fragments and lifeless insects. These feature as tools for mark-making, dye sources, sculptures or images.

Living in the Lower Blueys

Betty shares her lived experiences of enjoyable times in the Lower Blue Mountains. Her painting style is described as naïve, and while depicting a good natured scene in her paintings, she creates a new perspective by distorting proportion.

Wild is an exhibition of paintings that focus on remote landscapes that are visually full of drama and emotion. Frances wants the audience to be able to feel the beauty and awe that you can experience when immersing yourself in such a landscape.

Trove – that which connects

Trove – that which connects is a series of mixed media works on paper consisting of groupings of the artist’s letters, invitations, cards, photocopies, photographs and recent drawings.

Shadows and Light

11 May – 4 Jun

Shadows and Light represents responses to the terrain in different media including hand printed linocuts, oil paintings, mixed media and collage combining linocuts and photographs of bush textures.

Tipping Points

8 Jun – 2 Jul

This group exhibition serves as a reflection on climate emotions through visual arts. Each of these artists lived through the Black Summer and many serve as practicing psychologists and/or art therapists in this community. As a group they aim to represent the subtle difference between affect and emotion.

Adam Wolnicki: Tales of the City

Adam’s latest project is a collage of blurry silhouettes, people in the distorted environment, radiating vibes, colours and shapes which represent their unique ways of living and personality. Their lives captured in the decisive moments, stripped of details and personal information, converted into intriguing emotional images, transformed and enhanced, creating a story: The Tales of the City. Adam is aware of the impact and relation humans have with their building environment. In his photos he wants to show the complexity of this process and the ways it effects our lives.
