STERLING
Full Continuum of Living, IL Cottages and Apartments to AL & Memory Care, All on One 28 Acre Neighborhood Campus LIMITED
“What I’ve learned is that all communities talk about wellness and socialization… but they don’t have the wellness center, greenspace, programming and staffing that Sterling Estates has. No one can match what Sterling provides for their residents. My parents are thriving at Sterling Estates… Bet yours will too” - Susan S.
Oaks at West Cobb: Family-operated Senior Living Community Cultivates Person-centered Lifestyles.
Oaks Senior Living was created in 1998 to provide person-centered care to elders who can no longer live safely at home. The family operated executive team has been faithfully providing senior living in Georgia and South Carolina. Oaks Senior Living strives to create a vibrant, life-affirming environment where each person matters and everyone has opportunities for growth, regardless of age or abilities.
Oaks at West Cobb, an Oaks Senior Living managed community, embodies the values set in place to create the best home for your loved one. Located in Marietta, GA and only a short drive from Atlanta, Oaks at West Cobb features luxury assisted living and memory care apartments with various care service options tailored to fit your needs.
The Thriving Lifestyle of an Oaks at West Cobb Resident
At Oaks at West Cobb, each resident’s community experience is tailored to their individual needs and desires. The flow of one resident’s day may not be the same as another, being individual care needs vary per resident. Take a few moments to join the journey of a typical day in the life of an Oaks at West Cobb resident.
Many of our residents begin their day with a freshly prepared meal by our Executive Chef, with the option of having specialized meals or alternate dining choices depending on dietary need. Meals continue to be prepared for lunch and dinner; however, residents have the option to eat at any point during the day as they would in their own home due to our all-day dining service
Residents then have the freedom of joining devotional time led by our Lifestyle Director. Spiritual, educational, physical, and social activities continue throughout the day and residents have the option of attending all that interest them. Our daily activities create freedom of choice for residents, so each day has new possibilities! Through our partnership with Parker Chase, residents can also enjoy offsite activities, engaging with young students in arts and crafts, performances, etc.
While dining and activities are fundamental parts of the Oaks Senior Living mission, person-centered care is our main priority. Each day, the resident is always the focus. Our management team works together to provide the exact care plan that you need to create the most abundant life possible. Residents will have 24-hour access to care partners with care services optimized by our professional nursing team. Partnering with EmpowerMe Wellness, residents can receive onsite physical therapy and have access to diagnostics for non-blood products creating quick turnaround times of results and treatments.
“Living here has been a pleasure. The staff and residents are very friendly, the community is beautiful, and it just feels good calling this place home.” Oaks at West Cobb Resident
Come be a part of our family!
Each part of a resident’s day is created to honor the life, desires, and needs of the resident all while providing a sense of purpose. Come take a look and see everything that is available for you and your loved one at Oaks at West Cobb.
When you have had three ruptured disks and back pain your entire adult life you get used to going to physical therapy. This time, however, things seemed a little different as there was numbness as well, but off to the therapist it was for some stretches to hopefully work the issue out.
After taking blood pressure in his right arm and then his left arm the therapist took the batteries out, a sign to Mike and Melody Gold that all things were not well.
“Is he having a stroke?”, Melody asked.
Mike Gold grew up in Buffalo, New York and has been a Coach, a leader, an Athletic Director and a Christian educator for most of his entire life. He went down South to Clearwater Christian College after graduating High School and played basketball and baseball. He quickly knew his calling and now, 38 years later, Mike, a father to six and grandfather to soon to be 17, has done it all, Athletic Director, basketball coach, baseball coach, soccer coach, PE teacher, grass cutter, field chalker, scheduler and so on. You name it, Mike has done it, all in the name of service to others.
But on December 28th, 2020 the answer to Melody’s question was yes and it all almost came to an end.
Mike was immediately taken to the hospital on that fateful day. The therapist, a former player of Mike’s, called ahead and with it being the height of Covid, Melody was not allowed in. After a blood pressure reading of 245/140 and an A1C test of 12 (due to his diabetes) along with a Covid positive test the Athletic Director and women’s basketball coach at Dominion Christian School in Marietta was sent to the Covid ward. Mike facetimed with Melody who knew this Covid diagnosis did not seem right and implored the hospital to look into a possible stroke.
As time went on Mike’s left side started to lose feeling and the hospital performed an MRI. The neurologist read the exam which showed massive strokes and informed Mike that he would probably never walk or talk again.
Things happened quickly and the coach was actually back home within two days. The Gold’s had no idea of what they were in for as they were now seeing him for the first time, post stroke.
As Melody told me, “We didn’t know how bad it was. We weren’t allowed into the hospital. For a long while it took two of us just to get him out of bed or a chair. He lost all of his core strength.”
Life had been turned upside down but within five weeks, not five months or five years, Melody wheeled Mike up to the basketball court so he could sit beside the team and watch his girls play. He couldn’t coach, yet, with his whispers, as he lost that “coaching voice”. But like a miracle, within minutes, suddenly the coaching voice came out.
Melody explained, “We were going to do everything we could to get him better, you name it we tried it, hyperbaric treatment, stem cell therapy, everything. But that first day
THE GOLD STANDARD
he stepped back on the sideline did more for him than any of those therapies. Everybody was crying. At halftime I was supposed to push him to the locker room but he suddenly just took off with his right arm going across the floor so fast. The crowd just started screaming, ‘You go, Coach’”.
When those same girls, a few weeks later, won their first region championship since 2005, Mike asked his beloved soul mate to follow the winning tradition and go up on the ladder and cut the net for him. Melody turned and said, “no... you can do this.” With 10 hands holding Mike up making sure he wouldn’t go down, this incredible man and coach performed the feat as Melody made sure he would.
“I used to be the first one there and the last one to leave. I now can’t do all of the physical things like line the field or cut the grass. The boys coach is my assistant (and does that). I’m now doing all of the paperwork and scheduling. It’s definitely a whole different ballgame now.” said the Coach.
I caught up with some of the people who know Mike best.
Former Head of School, David Raines: “His job titles were Athletic Director and basketball coach but he was so much more than that. He was always taking time to encourage students and listening to what was going on in their lives. He truly is an inspiration to all of us.”
Ed Morris, the current Head of School: “The theme for our athletic department is “Testimony First” based on Matthew 5:16: “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Coach Gold is a great example of this verse. His humble, servant leadership sets a tone for our students to “shine before others” here at Dominion Christian. We are so glad that Coach Gold is a part of our staff.”
Maci Campbell, a player on Coach Gold’s team: “I began playing for Coach Gold my freshman year, little did I know I wasn’t just playing for any team, I was being adopted. Coach Gold and Mama Gold quickly became mentors, encouragers, and family to me and every other girl on the team. A win in Coach Gold’s book didn’t happen on the court. It happened in our locker room or on Coach Gold’s couch where me and the rest of the team would have what we like to call therapy. Coach Gold is someone encouraging constantly, abounding in joy, and giving glory to the Lord even in his hardest times.”
Progress is being made. Mike Gold has been driving again for about a year now and just drove on the interstate for the third time since the stroke. He also has started to walk with a 4 pronged-cane.
This special coach summed it all up, “I realized that day that God’s not done with me yet. I’ve got more to do. I call it my bonus life. I believe I’m on 864 days (as of our meeting) of bonus life since the stroke.”

Chiropractic care, inspired by D.D. Palmer, the Founder of Chiropractic, is deeply rooted in understanding the body’s inherent ability to heal and function optimally. This healthcare approach acknowledges the crucial relationship between the spine, nervous system, and overall well-being. The spine serves as a protective armor, facilitating intricate communication within the nerve system, which is vital for sustaining life.
From the moment you discover you’re expecting a baby, your body begins its incredible work. Within the first three weeks of conception, the central nervous system starts laying the foundation for the developmental events that unfold over the following months. Imagine a symphony of intelligence flowing through your baby’s delicate form, orchestrated by the nervous system. However, even within the womb, the spine of your child may experience misalignments, adding to the challenges faced during the journey into this world. These misalignments, known as subluxations, have the potential to disrupt the life-giving signals from the brain to the body, hindering proper development. This is where the transformative power of chiropractic care becomes evident.
responses, enabling the body to effectively combat infections and diseases. Through chiropractic adjustments, subluxations in the nervous system are eliminated, thereby contributing to improved immune system function. A 5-year-old boy named Beau had been experiencing frequent visits to the emergency room due to constant illnesses. In search of a solution, his mother decided to bring him to our office. She was amazed and overwhelmed with joy after a few months of care, as Beau’s primary care physician was able to discontinue six different medications that were prescribed for his lung issues, including asthma and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). In the past year, Beau has only had to be hospitalized once.
Assists with Digestive Issues:
The chiropractor, acting as a skilled conductor, delivers gentle and precise adjustments to realign the spinal segments in a baby, exerting no more force than assessing the ripeness of a tomato. The result is a restoration of rhythm within the body, enabling the full expression of the body’s innate potential for healing and vitality. The same power that animates our human body is liberated. Aligning the spine becomes a sacred dance, reinstating balance, clearing nerve pathways, and allowing the unhindered flow of life force. Freed from interference, the body thrives in ways that defy expectations.
Central to our philosophy is a deep respect for the body’s wisdom, recognizing that true healing originates from within. It beckons us to embark on an extraordinary journey, nurturing, celebrating, and awakening the innate intelligence within your baby to its fullest potential.
When it comes to the well-being of our children, we naturally seek safe and effective solutions. Pediatric chiropractic care has garnered recognition as a gentle and holistic approach to supporting children’s overall health and development. Extensive research conducted by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) provides five compelling reasons, supported by their findings, to consider taking your child to a chiropractor.
1
Promotes Proper Neurological Development:
ICPA research suggests that chiropractic care can positively influence the neurological development of children. Chiropractic adjustments help optimize the functioning of the nervous system, which plays a crucial role in a child’s growth, learning, and behavior. Proper spinal alignment supports healthy brain-body communication, facilitating optimal neurological development. I have witnessed firsthand the progress my boys have made through chiropractic care, supporting their overall development and well-being.
Enhances Immune System Function:
The ICPA’s research emphasizes the role of chiropractic care in bolstering the immune system. A well-functioning nervous system plays a vital role in coordinating immune
Pediatric chiropractic care has shown promise in addressing common digestive issues in children. Research suggests that chiropractic adjustments can alleviate symptoms associated with colic, acid reflux, constipation, GERD, and other gastrointestinal discomforts. Subluxations in the spine can exert unnecessary pressure on the diaphragm and disrupt the digestive system. By realigning the spine, chiropractic care provides relief from this pressure, often resulting in symptom reduction after just a few treatments. My children have experienced similar relief from digestive issues, reinforcing the effectiveness of chiropractic care in this regard.

Supports Healthy Sleep Patterns: Sleep is vital for a child’s growth, development, and overall well-being. Research indicates that chiropractic care contributes to improved sleep patterns in children. By addressing the root cause, chiropractic adjustments help increase the flow of life-giving signals allowing for more restful nights. Witnessing this positive impact on my boys has solidified my conviction in pediatric chiropractic care for their overall well-being.
Facilitates Sports Performance and
Injury
Prevention: Chiropractic care holds great potential in optimizing performance and reducing injuries for children engaged in sports and physical activities. Through corrective chiropractic care, flexibility, coordination, and balance can be enhanced, leading to improved athletic performance. As a father of sports-loving children, I have personally witnessed the positive impact of chiropractic care on their injury recovery and sports performance. Moreover, we have a patient who recently achieved remarkable progress in her athletic performance, winning multiple track meets thanks to her well-functioning nervous system.
Deciphering the cause of a baby’s distress can be challenging. Consider a gentle chiropractic adjustment as a potential solution for your child. As a chiropractor and a father, I have witnessed the benefits of pediatric chiropractic care firsthand. Consult a pediatric chiropractor to explore these advantages for your child’s well-being. The research by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association highlights the positive effects of chiropractic care on neurological development, immune system function, digestion, sleep patterns, sports performance, musculoskeletal conditions, and preventive care. Embrace the transformative power of chiropractic care and unlock your child’s innate potential for vibrant health. Stop by or call today to schedule your children’s life transforming first visit. If you have lived in Georgia for a little while the odds are pretty good that you have at the very least heard of “The Kimmer”. This former Marine, named Kim Peterson, has been on the radio and television since 1972, with ups and downs and numerous stops along the way. He has honed his craft at well known local stations such as WSB and WGST.
After being “retired” now for a few years, The Kimmer Show is back. XTRA 106.3 FM (1230AM), the sister station of 680 the Fan, right here in Cobb County, has announced that the rambunctious 77-year-old will fill their 3-6 PM time slot.
I caught up with this lively veteran and you can’t help but feel the emotion.
JH: Welcome back to the air and congratulations on the new gig. Tell everybody who the Kimmer is.
KP: Oh man where do I begin? When I got out of the Marines, after college at Arizona State and Michigan State, I came here and began my first job in 1972 at WSB. I was thrilled doing morning news at what was known as thee station of the South. It was so much different then. It was serious journalism. You would wear a suit and tie. I then went to New Orleans as a news guy and that’s where I started my show. I even got into some tv in Chicago and San Francisco for a few years. I was on Nightline, Good Morning America and the Phil Donahue Show. I came back to radio in 1991 at WGST which was great. I was no more a news guy. I was a talk show host. They left me alone and we were having a ball. We were having fun and people enjoyed it. (Long story short and eventually) They all went syndicated and we were blown out.
JH: Your radio shows are pretty wild. Have you modeled yourself after any of the other radio legends like a Don Imus or a Howard Stern or anybody?
KP: I’m a Marine, I’m a Conservative. It’s hard to label me. I’m a moderate, “Live and let live.” I’m certainly not a Rush Limbaugh. I actually predated Rush and all of those guys. I did the fake interviews and the fake commercials first. Imus was an old curmudgeon. I’m too high energy for that. I used to like Stern but he seems to have gone off the deep end. Rodney Ho (of the AJC) used to call me “the Rogue troublemaker”. To be honest, I’m high energy and obnoxious but I’m also a cry-baby. I cry at the Clydesdales commercials.
The Kimmer is Back!
Q A& KIMMER
JH: As you just mentioned, you’re a Marine. You served our country really before any of this. What was that experience like?
KP: I joined in 1966. My dad was a Naval officer in World War II and I always used to try on his hat. I wanted to be a Marine since I was five years old. I remember vividly, as a young boy, being on the floor at my parents’ house with one of those big radios playing, the size of a chair, and there was a story about these people rescuing a village. I have never forgotten it. I spent time in Parris Island, Camp Lejeune, Camp Pendleton and requested orders to go to Vietnam. I was discharged in 1969.
JH: What can we expect from this new show?
KP: I’m just me. Pete (Davis) and Flounder will be with me again. I will do what I always do, get up early, grab my coffee and newspaper, read the news and clip out stuff. I normally do about eight hours of prep. I’ve always overworked it and then at 3:04 or whatever (when the show begins) it’s all out the window. I’m live and spontaneous and well planned but when the gun goes off anything can happen. I’ll never lie, always straight answers. If people know you’re phony they will turn you off.
JH: We are all about Cobb County. You are now one of us, with the XTRA studios in the Battery. What memories do you have about our beautiful County?
KP: When I think of Cobb County, I think of all of the beautiful motorcycle rides I did here along with the many rounds of golf at Cobblestone. I have bought four or five motorcycles at Earl Smalls Harley Davidson and used to ride them all the time in the Marine Corps charity events. We always had the Cobb County police motorcycle unit with their beautiful bikes. We used to take over. I’d be leading the group of 20 to 30 officers. That was a lot of fun.
JH: Some final thoughts on getting back to work?
KP: I’m just so thrilled to be back, take some phone calls and have a laugh. I want to keep them guessing which keeps me guessing and spontaneous and alive. It’s a whole new thing. It’s like a birth. All of a sudden at my age I’m starting a career again. I have butterflies and will be nervous but I’m humbled, I’m smiling and I can’t stop. I feel really good and I feel like it’s nice to be around again.

guacamole
Nothing says summer like a batch of homemade guacamole! This is THE recipe you’ll want to have on repeat to enjoy at home or bring to a gathering with friends and family. Even better? It’s actually good for you!
Avocados are by far one of the best foods you can be including as part of a balanced, anti-inflammatory diet. They’re a great source of concentrated healthy fat and fiber, and contain a wide array of nutrients that can reduce heart disease risk and are beneficial in improving overall health. Quite honestly I eat them in some form almost daily, and I recommend that my clients do too!
The other ingredients in this guac add plenty of nutritional value too! Garlic, red onion, cilantro and lime juice are not only flavorful but pack a punch of anti-inflammatory benefits and nutrients, so it’s totally worth it to take the extra step to make your guac next level!
Without further ado, here’s how you make the magic happen.
Ingredients:
3 ripe avocados
Juice of 1 lime
¼ cup minced red onion
1/3 cup mince cilantro
1-2 cloves garlic, minced
½ tsp kosher salt
Directions:
Combine all ingredients and mash with a fork or potato masher to the desired consistency. Serve with chips, vegetable crudité or use on tacos, fajitas, or even sandwiches and salads!
Africa got me through COVID. When the world was shut down - and no one was traveling or planning travel but everyone was cancelling travel - I learned about Africa. It was a destination I always wanted to know more about but never had the time, so when all I had was time I spent it learning about Africa. All told, I probably spent the equivalent of a full month attending online events with suppliers in Africa, taking an incredibly in-depth class designed for travel advisors to learn each country in detail, and researching countries, game lodges, and resorts. Africa kept me grounded during a very scary time in the travel industry.
Fast forward a few years and travel was back bigger and better than ever, and my time during COVID shutdowns came full circle when I was invited to go to South Africa and Zimbabwe for a work trip.
I arrived in Johannesburg and while there, I was able to experience the Apartheid Museum and visit Soweto. We were at the museum for only a few hours but were emotionally exhausted from what we saw there. It was surreal to fully realize how recently it was that apartheid ended, and even more so to follow the museum visit by going to the various places in Soweto that we just saw in photos and videos and to hear people who were there tell us about their experiences. It was an incredible day and one of my favorite experiences from the trip.
Our first game lodge was near Marakele National Park, which is a stunning part of South Africa with beautiful mountains. During our first game drive we were able to see a lion with its recent kill, and watch it protect the kill from wild dogs. When we saw our first elephants (my favorite) we were as excited as a preteen at a Taylor Swift concert – literally giddy - and if we didn’t need to be quiet we would have squealed like one. During our time there we saw all kinds of game as well as four of the Big Five animals – lion, elephants, rhino, and water buffalo. We were also incredibly lucky to see a ton of babies while we were there, including a month-old rhino. I even scared off some hyenas one night that had walked into the common area of the game lodge.
A friend of mine put it best – ‘everything in Africa is just more and all of your senses are heightened. You see more, hear more, smell more. It’s everything - the animals, the terrain, the dirt, the stars. It’s all just more.’ That was especially true when we went on our walking safari. Instead of being in the relative safety of the safari vehicle, we were on foot and completely vulnerable. We had two armed guides with us in the front, and I can say with certainty that none of us have been on such high alert in our lives. You are totally exposed, out in the open, and you have no idea what waits for you around
the next bush, tree, or turn. We walked through an open field of high grass and had to watch for movement to ensure lions weren’t waiting to pounce. We walked through an area with trees and had to make sure the giraffes weren’t having lunch nearby. We went by the watering hole and had to make sure elephants weren’t taking a midday break. I don’t think any of us exhaled until we were back in the safari vehicle but we all absolutely loved it.
Even in the vehicles we were constantly scanning the horizon, looking for game. And when we did find it, we often had to be quiet - and utterly still if the animals were very close by. On one of the drives, I was less than ten feet from a young elephant. If anything had spooked him, he could have charged our vehicle and easily knocked it over with all of us in it. You truly get a sense of how small you are in the world when you’re on safari.
We also stayed in Sabi Sands, and it’s amazing how different the land is there versus Marakele. The one Big Five animal that had eluded us up to that point was the leopard, and on our second game drive we finally spotted one up in a tree. This is one of the reasons I recommend staying at different game lodges, because the game viewing is different at each and it gives you a better chance to see all of the Big Five.
We also visited Cape Town which is a beautiful city on the western coast. It reminded me very much of San Francisco with its hills. Here we visited Table Mountain which has stunning views of Cape Town, the Cape of Good Hope, and the Cape Winelands which is similar to Napa. The difference between being out in the bush on game drives versus in a metropolitan city is quite stark and was a great way to break things up.
Our last stop was Zimbabwe and the highlight here was Victoria Falls, the ‘Smoke That Thunders.’ This is one of the natural seven wonders of the world, and it did not disappoint. It straddles the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, and the views are very different from each side. We hiked along the rim to see the falls from the Zimbabwe side and it was so impressive to see the volume of water that passes over the falls. Visibility here varies and the falls are much less visible on windy days. There are also several activities you can do here, including the infamous Gorge Swing over the Zambezi River. Three of the five of us were brave enough to do this 230-foot free fall that then swings you out 312 feet. Given my fear of heights, I was not one of them and opted instead to take photos. Maybe I’ll brave it on my next visit.
My visit to Africa was an absolutely amazing experience. A friend told me before I left that once I went to Africa no other destination would compare and I would keep wanting to go back. She could not have been more right - which is why I’m going back again in October to experience Botswana and Zambia.
If you haven’t yet experienced Africa, it absolutely must be at the top of your list.

While there are many factors contributing to this trend, one thing that’s keeping inventory low right now is that some homeowners are reluctant to move when the mortgage rate they have on their current house is lower than the one they could get on their next house. I hear plenty of people who say they are planning to sell in the next 3 to 6 months say they’re waiting for the interest rates to come down. While this wait-and-see approach is right for some sellers, it also creates an opening for more motivated sellers to jump into the market. If your current house truly doesn’t fit your needs anymore and you’re ready to move, don’t miss this chance to stand out. When fewer sellers are putting their homes up for sale, buyers will have fewer options, so you set yourself up to get the most eyes possible on your house. That’s why your house could receive multiple offers, as buyers compete over the limited supply of homes for sale, especially if priced correctly. Inventory levels are still quite low and that’s when smart sellers get multiple offers taking advantage of getting the most out of the sale.
Spring and Summer Are the Best Seasons to Sell a House
Historically, we have seen spring and summer as the best seasons to sell a house. The weather is good, especially for those living in colder climates. Also, families with kids in school will want to buy their next home before school starts. Plus, the sun setting later will give plenty of time after work to go look at several homes. The longer days provide more exposure for listings, leading to more offers. So, when there’s low inventory during the summer, sellers have even more of a chance of getting a higher price for their home.
Fall and winter are not as popular seasons to sell a house. The home sales decline begins in September, and by winter, homebuying goes to the back burner for many buyers. During the fall and winter seasons, buyers are occupied with the busy holiday season, and the weather is normally not suitable for house hunting.
If you’re thinking of selling your house, then it is important to consider most buyers’ situations. Homebuyers on a deadline, such as those who want to acquire a house before the school year begins, are more active in the spring and summer. So, if you’re like most sellers that want the best outcome, then you want to list your house in May or June. Keep in mind that your house will need to be in great condition with attractive curb appeal. Most importantly is to price the house correctly and it’s always best to talk to a real estate professional.
The Bottom Line
If you’re ready to sell, list your house now and beat your competition to the closing table. When your house stands out, you should get multiple offers. Partner with a real estate professional to get your house on the market. It’s very important to have an experienced listing agent networking with other agents who are familiar with your listing and spread the word of the new listing. There are always some off-the-market properties as well, so a good agent is always networking to hear about these. I’m the kind of agent that sells properties before they ever hit the MLS.
In today’s market social media is important. Make sure your listing agent is targeting buyers in as many ways as possible, like social media, MLS and doing Open Houses. Don’t forget that having an experienced listing agent with great negotiating skills is important, so again experience is the key.
