“We sold our home of 20+ years earlier this year, above our asking price, and moved into our beautiful cottage home at Sterling Estates, freeing us from all the responsibilities of homeownership. We freed up cash, traded in property taxes and constant maintenance for the many benefits we’ve discovered living here at Sterling. We exercise more than ever. I love to walk through the grounds and enjoy the large wellness center, while my wife swims almost daily in the indoor heated pool. She is fond of her weekly art classes. A day here is much more fulfilling for us, we wished we had moved sooner. We encourage you to come see what we mean.” - Bill and Sally R.

Move for Your Heart: Simple Ways to Boost Cardiovascular Health

February is full of hearts—on cards, in candy boxes, and on every store aisle. While chocolates and candlelit dinners get most of the attention, this month is also a reminder to show your actual heart a little love. The good news? Supporting heart health doesn’t require grand gestures or intense workouts. Your heart is much more impressed by consistency and movement, than by anything wrapped in foil.

Fall in Love with Everyday Movement Your heart doesn’t care if movement comes from a treadmill or a trip around the block—it just wants you to move. Everyday activities like walking, tidying the house, or dancing in the kitchen while cooking dinner all count toward heart health.

Walking is especially heart friendly. A brisk walk gets your blood pumping, improves circulation, and boosts mood—all without fancy equipment or complicated plans. Even short walks matter. Think of them as quick “love notes” to your heart throughout the day.

And if walking with a friend or loved one makes it more enjoyable, even better. Your heart likes connection almost as much as it likes movement.

Strength and Mobility: The Heart’s Support System Cardio often gets all the credit when it comes to heart health, but strength training and mobility deserve some love too. Muscles help move blood efficiently through the body, making your heart’s job easier (and it appreciates that).

Strength exercises support posture, balance, and circulation, while mobility work keeps joints moving freely so nothing feels stiff or restricted. A body that moves well is more likely to keep moving—and that’s a win for your heart. Think of strength and mobility as your heart’s reliable long-term partner: supportive, steady, and essential.

Emotional Wellbeing Is a Love Language Stress can be a real heartbreaker. Chronic stress, lack of rest, and emotional overload all impact cardiovascular health.

Movement can help here too, gentle, mindful movement like stretching, yoga, or tai chi can help put the focus on your body and its needs instead of the external stressors that can wear us down.

Connection matters too. Laughing with friends, sharing a walk, or simply feeling supported can lower stress and improve heart health. Consider this permission to prioritize joy and rest alongside exercise. Your heart notices. Tracking Without the Pressure

No need to obsess over numbers. Simple tracking tools that your smart watch and primary care provider provides can let you know if you are on the right track to caring of your heart. Watches can show your resting heart rate (60100 bpm is considered normal, lower resting heart rates can be a sign of good heart health)and your daily step count (see what your daily average has been for the last week and see if you can add 500 steps to it if you are looking to move more). Watches can also show sleep trends, are you getting 6-8 hours of quality sleep nightly? A trip to your PCP can show your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar numbers and suggest ways to keep them in tip top shape. Subjective measurements can be just as meaningful:

• Getting less winded during activity

• Feeling more energetic during the day

• Sleeping better at night

• Feeling calmer and more resilient

These are all signs your heart is feeling the love.

A Heart-Healthy Relationship That Lasts This February, choose movement you enjoy, strength that supports your daily life, and rest that helps you recharge. Heart health isn’t about perfection—it’s about showing up regularly, with care and intention. And unlike chocolate, these habits won’t disappear after Valentine’s Day.

So, take a walk, lift something a little heavy, stretch, breathe, laugh, and keep moving. Your heart is with you for the long haul—and it’s worth the commitment.

Talkin’ Sports

The Harlem Globetrotters 100th Year Anniversary!

G

rowing up in New York there aren’t many fonder memories than traveling to Madison Square Garden and watching the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters. There is something magical about the brand and the joy those players give to children. Players like Curly Neal and Meadowlark Lemon and Marques Haynes (the world’s greatest dribbler) are absolute legends.

Oh, and before I go on, there may be a few of you saying who are the Harlem Globetrotters? Well, just think Savannah Bananas but on the basketball court and their usual opponent in the Washington Generals are akin to the Party Animals.

The Globetrotters, who began in 1926, a full 100 years ago, boast the best record in professional sports with over 27,000 wins and less than 400 losses. With that said these games are scripted and the Generals are not exactly supposed to win. It has obviously happened but that is a rarity and probably only done once in a blue moon.

A few months ago I saw that they were coming to town in mid December at the wonderful Lakepoint Sports Complex’ Champions Center in Emerson and knew what to do. My 11 year old son was going to share in this joy and boy did he ever!

LakePoint Sports is only about 15 minutes north of Kennesaw State University and right off of 75. It hosts many youth events including the GHSA Volleyball state championship along with other sports including basketball, soccer and baseball. There is no better sports complex in the state of Georgia with its amazing 170,000 square foot indoor facility and state of the art 1,300 acre outdoor complex. Since 2016, LakePoint has proudly served as the official training camp for the Globetrotters and has hosted the first unofficial game of each world tour, including this 100th year Anniversary tour.

I kept this night as a surprise. My son mentioned a few years earlier how this looked fun and I knew it would be right up his alley. Thanks to the wonderful people at Lakepoint, led by its CEO Mark O’Brien, we were taken fabulous care of and given their “Magic Pass” allowing us pregame access and everything you could ever want. This pass included meeting the players, getting autographs, having them spin the ball on their fingers and the children’s fingers, shooting at the baskets and oh so much more.

And that was just the pregame!

Then the game itself was how I always remembered it. Well, now from the mind of a 53-year-old, no longer from say a nine or ten year old. But the new crop of players led by Hammer, Torch and Bulldog are proudly carrying on the tradition. They still provide all of the trick shots and slick dribbling, comedic humor and water bucket tricks you could ever imagine. It was two hours of sheer entertainment and excitement for the new young generation of fans.

At one point they even had a 15 or so minute “human replay” where the play ers went backwards to show what just happened and figure out who should get the ball out of bounds. Wouldn’t you know it, the Globetrotters were awarded the ball and would go on to win the game at the buzzer!

After the game ended all of the players were on the court generously signing autographs for everybody to have.

This once a century 100-year world tour goes all over the country and will be back in Georgia in late March. Get your tickets now and be a hero to your kids!

LEGACYof MOVING MOUNTAINS

God’s Blessings from the Start

As it celebrates its 50th anniversary, Mount Paran Christian School has continuously equipped students to climb higher — nurturing servant-leaders who honor God, love others and walk in Truth. Growing from humble roots that began in 1976 as a single preschool class in Atlanta, MPCS has grown into the largest independent school in Cobb county, serving more than 1,300 students from Pre-K3 through grade 12 while seated on a college-like 68-acre campus with breath-taking views of Kennesaw Mountain.

Long Legacy of Excellence

What began as a faithful vision has blossomed into one of the nation’s most respected private Christian institutions. The numbers reflect this tradition of excellence. MPCS high school students achieved a 91 percent AP exam pass rate, while preschoolers demonstrated 13 percent higher Kindergarten readiness. More impressive is that on average, more than 50% of senior applicants gain acceptance to UGA or Georgia Tech. From the award-winning programs in visual and performing arts to the school’s numerous State Championship athletic teams in which 22% of athletes sign to play in college, students are discovering their God-given talents and learning to use them for His glory.

Faith That Moves Mountains

Functioning as a partnership between home, church, and school, the word that distinguishes MPCS is covenantal. This covenant-Christian mission requirement sets MPCS apart as a community where families and educators align in their common faith and join forces in purpose. This in-sync Christ-centered focus is interwoven naturally through weekly chapel, Bible courses in all grades, and intentional discipleship by career-educators. Combining rigorous academics with opportunities for servant-leadership, MPCS prepares each child for both college and calling.

Known and Loved

MPCS teachers take pride in guiding students in their educational and spiritual journeys. With an individualized approach and small class sizes (12:1 average student-teacher ratio), children discover their strengths and grow in confidence under the care of educators who know, love, and pray for them daily. Students develop a growth mindset and a steadfast faith that assists them in conquering challenges in the classroom, on the field, and on the stage.

Discover for Yourself

Parents seeking an attentive partner in raising children to be academically prepared, spiritually grounded, and ready to “move mountains” will find a home at MPCS. The best way to experience the school’s mission is to step onto campus and witness it in action. Families are invited to attend a Tuesday Tour offered weekly to see firsthand how a MPCS education blends excellence with purpose.

Walk the beautiful grounds, experience engaging classrooms, meet dedicated teachers, and feel the unmistakable sense of joy and belonging that has defined the Eagle community for the past half-century. RSVP at mtparanschool.com/tour.

Trust, transparency, and a dedicat ed commitment to your child’s oral health have been the foundation of Dr. Aaron Schwartz’s practice for over sixteen years. Dr. Aaron provides evidence-based pediatric dental care to fam ilies in our community through an independent, doctor-owned practice focused on prevention, presence, and individualized care.

Schwartz Dentistry for Children is nearing 15 successful years in evidence-based pediatric dental care in our community. Dr. Aaron’s focus is preventive dentistry, though he offers a range of treatment modalities for children with dental treatment needs, including in-house IV sedation partnered with pediatric anesthesiologists. Dr. Aaron is also a leading provider of laser frenectomy treatment for tongue-tied infants and children, using advanced CO₂ laser technology to deliver precise care during a critical stage of development. Supported by a highly experienced and compassionate team, the practice emphasizes prevention, education, and building trust early...which will inevitably carry forward through adulthood.

As the practice continues to grow, Dr. Aaron is excited to welcome a new associate who shares these same values.

Dr. Dhaval Shah—known to patients and families as “Dr. Shah”—is a Board-Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Born and raised in New York, Dr. Shah brings a warm, approachable style paired with a strong commitment to science-based care. He completed his doctoral training at Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine,

where he earned multiple honors, and went on to complete his pediatric dental residency at Columbia University, serving as Chief Resident. New York’s loss is our region’s gain! Dr. Shah is known for his calm demeanor, clear communication, and ability to connect easily with children and parents alike. He shares the practice philosophy of prevention, individualized treatment, and thoughtful decision-making, and is dedicated to helping families feel informed and confident about their child’s oral health.

“We are falling like dominos.” In recent years, pediatric dental practices nationwide—and even within our community—have transitioned to private equity ownership and/or owner-absent offices, usually without families being clearly informed of the new entity. This secrecy is by design. While corporate dentistry is not inherently wrong, this shift can influence practice philosophy, treatment recommendations, and overall patient experience. Dr. Aaron believes families deserve transparency and reassurance that their child’s care is guided solely by science, clinical judgment, and what is truly best for each patient. His commitment to an independent, dentist-owned practice reflects a belief that trusting relationships and high-quality, prevention-focused care are best achieved when clinical decisions remain in the hands of dentists, not private investors

Together, Dr. Aaron, Dr. Shah, Dr. Ross, and the entire Team at Schwartz Dentistry for Children are proud to offer families a pediatric dental home rooted in integrity, transparency, and lasting trust.

Wellstar Brings Expanded Women’s Health Services to Cobb Families

omen and families in Cobb County now have greater access to specialized, compassionate care close by. With the opening of the Obstetric Emergency Department and the completion of its Women’s Center renovation, Wellstar Cobb Medical Center continues to advance its vision for comprehensive women’s health and maternal care. These investments strengthen support for women at every stage of life, from preventive services to high-risk pregnancy and postpartum care.

The new Obstetric Emergency Department at Wellstar Cobb provides 24/7 specialized emergency care for pregnant and postpartum patients. Designed for women who are 20 weeks pregnant through six weeks after delivery, the department ensures urgent concerns are evaluated and treated quickly by obstetric experts.

“As we continue building the vision for women’s health at Wellstar Cobb, this new Obstetric Emergency Department represents an important step forward for our community,” said Wellstar Cobb President Eliese Bernard. “We are proud to be the first in our area to deliver dedicated emergency care for pregnant and postpartum patients.”

Unlike a traditional emergency department, the Obstetric Emergency Department offers direct access to board-certified obstetric providers who specialize in pregnancy-related emergencies. Patients are supported by a coordinated care team that includes maternal-fetal medicine specialists, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, nurses and certified nurse midwives. This approach allows for rapid assessment, diagnosis and treatment in a setting designed specifically for mothers and babies.

Services include evaluation for urgent pregnancy concerns, management of conditions such as hypertension or gestational diabetes, and monitoring for postpartum complications. Families also receive compassionate guidance and resources, including support during high-risk pregnancies or pregnancy loss.

Advancing Maternal Health and Reducing Disparities

A Renovated Women’s Center Designed Around Patients

In addition to the new Obstetric Emergency Department, Wellstar Cobb has completed a significant renovation of its Women’s Center. The updated space enhances comfort, privacy and the overall patient experience while supporting high-quality clinical care.

The Women’s Center brings together a full continuum of women’s health services in one coordinated environment. From prenatal care and labor and delivery to postpartum recovery and follow-up, patients benefit from seamless transitions and a care model centered on safety, quality and support.

The center complements Wellstar Cobb’s Level III Maternal Care Center, which provides comprehensive, coordinated care for patients with high-risk pregnancies. The teams have access to specialized resources, including the Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which provides advanced care for premature and critically ill newborns. This integration ensures both mothers and babies have immediate access to specialized care when it’s needed most.

Georgia continues to experience one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the nation, with Black women disproportionately affected. Many of these outcomes are preventable with timely access to specialized care. The Obstetric Emergency Department at Wellstar Cobb helps address these challenges by ensuring patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time. This focused model supports Wellstar’s commitment to improving maternal and perinatal outcomes and reducing health disparities. By removing barriers to specialized emergency care, the department creates safer and more equitable experiences for mothers and families.

“Our responsibility is to ensure that every mother has access to timely and specialized care throughout pregnancy and postpartum,” said Dr. Paula Greaves, Wellstar chief of women’s health. “The Obstetric Emergency Department at Wellstar Cobb strengthens that commitment by bringing expert care closer to home. This is an important step in improving maternal outcomes across Georgia.”

Comprehensive Women’s Health Services Under One Roof

Wellstar Cobb offers a range of women’s health services that support patients throughout their lives. These include routine obstetric and gynecologic care, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, maternal-fetal medicine and comprehensive postpartum support.

Adding to this robust offering is a new Maternal-Fetal Medicine office located at Wellstar Cobb. This new practice expands access to specialized care for women with complex or high-risk pregnancies, allowing patients to receive expert consultations, advanced imaging and coordinated care without leaving their community.

Together, these services reflect a comprehensive approach to women’s health that prioritizes prevention, early intervention and continuity of care. Collaboration across specialties leads to better outcomes and a more connected experience for patients and families.

Investing in the Health of the Community

The opening of the Obstetric Emergency Department, the renovation of the Women’s Center and the expansion of women’s health services underscore Wellstar Cobb’s ongoing investment in the health of women and families across Cobb County. By combining specialized emergency care, modernized facilities and a full spectrum of women’s health services, Wellstar Cobb continues to set a strong standard for maternal and women’s health in the region.

storage for a family with a disabled daughter. After we completed the final items on their punch list, they gave me a heartfelt thank-you note and a gift certificate to an excellent restaurant. I choked up reading the card…

026 marks the 18th year that general contractor Jerry Erickson has been in the home improvement business.

How did you get into construction?

After years of working in the corporate world, I realized it just wasn’t for me. I’ve always enjoyed building things and seeing the finished product. In 2008, I started doing small home projects for homeowners, which evolved into project management roles with two different general contractors. Before you know it, I had renovated several hundred homes.

What do you specialize in?

I do a lot of kitchen and bath work. In 2025, I remodeled 20 bathrooms and 9 kitchens, built a couple of sunrooms, added a room, renovated a basement, and built a 2-car garage with living space above. I also do whole-home remodels that can completely transform your home.

What are some of your projects that you are most proud of?

My team turned a large, unfinished attic in Woodstock into additional living space for a young family expecting a baby. We transformed 700 sf of unused attic space into livable space by adding a bedroom, bathroom, a den, and more storage. The family absolutely loved what we did with the space.

I also recently finished turning a 2-car garage into a bedroom, bathroom, and

What should I ask a contractor before hiring them?

There are 4 basic things you should ask a contractor before hiring them:

1. Are you licensed and insured?

Ask for proof of a valid contractor’s license from the state of Georgia that is current, plus copies of insurance.

2. Ask for references from recent clients?

Request a couple of references from jobs completed in the last few months. Make sure the references are relevant to the project you are working on. If you’re considering renovating a kitchen, ask the contractor for a kitchen reference.

3. What’s the estimated timeline for this project?

Understand how long the project will take, when it will start, and how delays will be handled.

4. What is the payment schedule?

Most contractors will require a deposit, typically a certain percentage of the total project amount. My typical project schedule includes a 50% deposit, milestone payments, and a final payment after completion. Find out how payments are accepted (check or credit card).

What is the best part about completing a project?

The best part about completing a project is when the homeowner genuinely thanks you or gives you a hug when my team has knocked it out of the park. I’ve been the recipient of some unusual thank-you gifts over the years, such as hats, bourbon, gift cards, and even a plush robe. Yes, a robe.
