cos’era il Grand Tour Considerato un viaggio di iniziazione dei rampolli dell’aristocrazia europea, in particolare inglese, il Grand Tour raggiunse il suo massimo splendore tra la fine del ‘700 e la metà dell’800. Questo viaggio di iniziazione era visto sia come strumento di formazione culturale e scambio intellettuale, che come commerciale e di apprendimento tramite l’esperienza diretta del luogo visitato. Il lungo viaggio a cui erano sottoposti i giovani grand turisti era ritenuto indispensabile dalla classe borghese per ampliare la mente e non ultimo per comprendere il mondo.
Non solo rampolli aristocratici, ma anche scrittori, architetti e pittori scelsero di fare questo viaggio, ritenendo che il Grand Tour fosse una sorta di museo all’aperto. Infatti i vari itinerari li portarono a scoprire e a visitare l’Italia, le città d’arte, i monumenti e i dipinti, passando attraverso paesaggi pittoreschi per concludersi ammirando le antichità. Nello specifico quando la passione per l’antico e per le rovine dilagava e si diffondeva in tutta Europa, gran parte dell’Italia fu meta di questo particolare pellegrinaggio culturale. Considered a journey of initiation of the scions of the European aristocracy, in particular the English ones, the Grand Tour reached its maximum splendor between the end of the 18th century and the mid-19th century. This initiation journey was considered both a way for cultural training and intellectual exchange, and a commercial and learning tool through the direct experience of the places visited. The long journey, which the young grand tourists were subjected to was considered indispensable by the bourgeois class to broaden their mind and to understand the world.
Not only aristocratic scions but also writers, architects and painters chose to make this trip, believing that the Grand Tour was a sort of open-air museum. As a matter of fact, the various itineraries led them to discover and visit Italy, its cities of art, monuments and paintings, passing through picturesque landscapes to conclude admiring the antiquities. When the passion for the ancient and for the ruins spread and diffused throughout Europe, much of Italy was the destination of this particular cultural pilgrimage.
