Warning to small businesses over new food waste regulations

Employers could face fines if they fail to separate their food waste from other recyclables and rubbish, an environmental lawyer has warned.

New legislation that requires businesses with as few as ten employees to follow strict waste rules has flown under the radar, according to Craig Burman, of commercial law firm Schofield Sweeney, who has been contacted by several companies, unclear about what the regulations mean for them and the consequences of failing to comply.

Under the Government’s new ‘Simpler Recycling’ regulations, which came into force in March this year, employers with ten employees or more must separate all food waste - from excess canteen fare to teabags and packed lunch leftovers – from other recyclables and rubbish, before it is collected.

Craig, who heads the Environmental

and Regulatory team for Schofield Sweeney, said: “The regulations are designed to reduce waste and make recycling easier and more consistent across England, which is obviously a good thing.

“But unfortunately, lots of businesses haven’t heard about the new rules and for many ‘Simpler Recycling’ is proving to be far from simple.

“Implications such as how to keep food waste separate in a busy workplace environment are of serious concern, and firms are worried that their employees’ tea club or ‘meal deal’ leftovers could land them in trouble.”

He is urging companies of all sizes to make sure management, and staff

are aware of their responsibilities under the new legislation.

Under the Simpler Recycling regulations:

• Card and paper must be separated from glass, plastic and metal for recycling - to recycle them all together, businesses must prepare a written assessment to explain why they cannot be separated.

• All food waste must be disposed of separately

• Packaging, cans or bottles should contain no remnants of food or drink

• General un-recyclable waste, such as used paper towels, must also be put in separate bins Craig added: “The legislation applies to every employer with a workforce of ten-plus and includes landlords and facilities management companies, schools, and community organisations, such as churches and charities.

“Companies which employ fewer than ten full-time employees will also have to comply with the legislation from March 31st, 2027.

“Nobody wants to fall foul of the regulations and risk being faced with an Environment Agency compliance notice or, ultimately, a fine, so I’d advise them to take note of the regulations and if in doubt seek additional guidance.”

Have your say on the Leeds city development

People and businesses in Leeds are being asked to have their say on the future of development and land use in the district as Leeds City Council launches a consultation to update its Local Plan.

The Leeds Local Plan is a legal framework that will set out the council’s vision and strategy for sustainable growth up to 2042. The plan guides how land is used and developed across the district and influences planning decisions to ensure any developments meet the needs of the community and the environment.

By having this long-term plan, the council can better manage where new homes, businesses, and services are built and ensure the right development happens in the right places.

The consultation, which will provide

vital feedback in shaping the future of Leeds, is open for 10 weeks from July 7, and is asking for opinions on:

• The vision and aims of the new Local Plan

• The key issues that it needs to address and the options, including homes, schools, workplaces, green spaces, waste management, carbon reduction and infrastructure

• Where new development should take place across the entire district

Deputy Leader and executive member for economy, transport and sustainable development, Councillor Jonathan Pryor, said: “As one of the fastest growing cities in Europe, we must ensure that the right developments and services happen in the right places, whilst also giving everyone across the entire Leeds district a voice in

planning our city’s future.

“The opinions of people and businesses are hugely important in planning a sustainable future for our city, and this consultation is a real opportunity to have your say and tell us what you think Leeds and the surrounding district should be like by 2042.

“The consultation has been designed to be as easy as possible to complete online, or if you prefer, come and speak to us, ask any questions, and share your thoughts at one of the in-person events.

“Your feedback is vital to making Leeds the best city possible and I encourage everyone to get involved.”

The Leeds Local Plan consultation is open for a period of 10 weeks starting from Monday July 7 and runs until Monday September 15, 2025. By visiting the dedicated and accessible on-line portal, you can:

• Read the draft Local Plan.

• Explore supporting documents.

• See the potential sites that have been suggested.

• Submit your feedback.

• View the full schedule of inperson events in your area.

Alternatively, you can join us at one of the thirteen in-person events we are holding across the Leeds district to have your say in person.

I want to achieve success, provide good quality homes that make customers happy, and for the sales team to achieve their targets.”

With a deep passion for the new homes industry, Rebecca finds fulfilment in guiding customers through their home-buying journey. She explained, “You’re taking customers through the journey. Celebrating the career of a special lady

In June, Leeds Hospitals Charity and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust celebrated the career of Dame Linda Pollard, CBE DL at a special fundraising dinner held in her honour.

Dame Linda, who has served as the Trust’s Chair since 2013, and as a Charity Trustee during that time, announced her departure in October 2024.

Dame Linda has worked for more than 30 years in the NHS in a range of non-executive Chair roles across several organisations in West Yorkshire. In 2020, she was recognised with a damehood in the Queen’s honours for her services to healthcare, her contribution to the community and her efforts to address the under representation of women in senior leadership roles.

In June, over 100 people, including Yorkshire Businesswoman editor Gill Laidler were invited to Rudding Park Hotel & Spa, to celebrate Linda’s achievements at a special event hosted by Michael Beverley DL, who is joint founder of the One Medical Group, and Edward Ziff, OBE, DL of Town

Centre Securities PLC. Both Michael and Edward are Vice Presidents at Leeds Hospitals Charity and worked with Linda during her time as a Trustee.

Edward said "It was a pleasure to host the fundraising event to celebrate Linda's achievements and launch the new Innovation Fund. From my experience as the previous Chair of Leeds Hospitals Charity, I know just how committed Dame Linda is to pursuing positive change and driving forward progress. She's always been a champion of Leeds and has been instrumental in securing funding for the new Innovation Village which will have such a positive impact on the city."

During the evening, speeches were given by Professor Phil Wood, the current chief executive of Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Lord Lieutenant for West Yorkshire Ed Anderson was also present at the dinner, having served alongside

Linda as the Lieutenancy Office where she currently holds the role of Deputy Lieutenant. He presented Dame Linda with a special framed personalised letter from HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh, Sophie Wessex, who is the Royal Patron of Leeds Children’s Hospital.

The chief executive of Leeds Hospitals Charity, Esther Wakeman, used the occasion to launch the Dame Linda Pollard Innovation Fund, a special charitable fund to commemorate Linda’s commitment to research and innovation.

Over £50,000 has already been raised from the event and the proceeds will be held in the Innovation Fund, to be made available for charitable grants for Leeds Teaching Hospitals staff members, so they can invest in projects that will use new technologies or implement new ways of working, to improve the experience for patients.

The charity has a long history of supporting innovation across the NHS and recent charitable projects have included technology to support

children with cancer, a tracking system for human tissue samples and a medical training system for surgery using VR headsets.

As well as Linda’s colleagues from across the Charity and the hospitals, also in attendance were key figures from across West Yorkshire, including Chair of Yorkshire Cancer Research Sir Alan Langlands, leader of Leeds City Council James Lewis and Sir Thomas and Lady Emma Ingilby, of Ripley Castle Estate.

Throughout the evening, attendees shared many anecdotes about Dame Linda’s achievements over her long NHS career.

At Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, she is credited with steering the organisation through an impressive turnaround. Under her leadership, the Trust moved from Requires Improvement to a Good CQC rating, improved staff engagement to some of the highest levels and brought the Trust back into financial surplus.

During her time at Leeds, Dame Linda has also led on many national projects including the Messenger and Pollard

NHS Leadership Review alongside General Sir Gordon Messenger, and the development of a Health and Care Hub in Leeds alongside Sir Chris Wormold, Permanent Secretary of the Department of Health and Social Care. Linda has also been a fierce advocate for charitable partnerships within the NHS and helped Leeds Hospitals Charity to become independent from

the Trust in 2017. She also supported several fundraising campaigns for the Leeds Cancer Centre during her tenure, including a £2.4 million appeal for a new MRI scanner. Dame Linda was also instrumental in the establishment of

the Rob Burrow Centre for MND Appeal, launched in 2021, which reached its fundraising target of £6.8 million last year.

Commenting at the dinner, Dame Linda Pollard said: “I am extremely sorry to be leaving Leeds Teaching Hospitals. The last 12 years have been the highlight of my career. Many of my incredible colleagues have now become close friends and I’ll cherish the time I have spent here, as well as the progress we have made together.” Linda, who was born in Saltaire and now lives in Leeds, is recently widowed and has three children. Linda has also been a judge for the Yorkshire Businesswoman Awards for the past two years. After her departure from Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, she is set to become the new chair of the NHS Counter Fraud Authority, a special health authority tasked to lead the fight against fraud, bribery and corruption in the NHS.

Leeds Hospital Charity will be the Yorkshire Businesswoman charity of the year for 2026.

Ideal choice for shoppers as new businesses opens at Leeds Kirkgate Market

New businesses are making Leeds Kirkgate Market an even better choice for shoppers as its multi-million-pound improvements programme continues to deliver the goods.

An impressive total of 18 indoor businesses have opened at the historic and much-loved retail destination over the course of the last 12 months.

And although the market’s food offer remains as strong as ever, the range of other products being sold by its latest arrivals are a reminder that this is a shopping spot with something for everyone.

One of the recently opened businesses, Zen & Pops, is based in the 1904 Hall and specialises in autism-friendly sensory and educational toys.

Toys Shop, another newcomer that is sure to be a hit with younger customers, can be found in the 1981 Hall.

Luggage retailer Bargain Bags has opened in the 1981 Hall while a furniture business, Buy Direct UK, that was already trading at the market has expanded its presence there by moving into a large previously vacant unit, again in the 1981 Hall.

The recent flurry of openings has

come as work continues on Leeds City Council’s £10m refurbishment of the market’s 19th-century ‘blockshops’ area.

Leeds Kirkgate Market is rightly renowned for the quality and value of the produce served up by its butchers, greengrocers, fishmongers, bakers and array of other food retailers...

The first phase of the scheme saw a total of 24 units renovated and improved with features such as new canopy fronts, electric roller shutters, extraction ducting, LED lighting and extra storage space.

Another 16 units were completed earlier this year, with one of the new businesses in this section – Hellenic Delicacies & More, a delicatessen selling Greek grocery

products and pastries – set to open shortly.

Work on the renovation of the remaining 12 blockshop units is due to finish next year.

Footfall figures for 2024, meanwhile, show the market received more than 5.9m visits over the year, four per cent up on the total for 2023.

Those figures were in part driven by a packed summer schedule of free family-friendly activities.

And visitors to the market can look forward to more of the same in 2025, with a free children’s activities programme running there from July 21 to August 29..

Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Leeds City Council’s deputy leader and executive member for economy, transport and sustainable development, said:

“Leeds Kirkgate Market is rightly renowned for the quality and value of the produce served up by its butchers, greengrocers, fishmongers, bakers and array of other food retailers.

“That’s not all the market has to offer, though, as shown by the range of exciting new businesses that have opened there over the last year.

“I’m delighted that our substantial investment in this important local landmark is making it even more attractive for traders and customers alike.“The support of everyone who works or shops at the market is very much appreciated as we continue our efforts to ensure its future is just as bright as its long and storied past.”

Two Yorkshire mums

launch a new

online service to help plug the UK’s postpartum care gap.

Two mums from Yorkshire have joined forces to launch a new brand that specifically addresses the health and wellbeing needs of new mothers, after they noted a significant gap in postpartum care in the first 12 months after they had their own children.

Friends Hanna Pumfrey, a mum of one from Knaresborough, and Hannah Thomson, a mum of two young boys from Harrogate, have launched Life Postpartum, a health and wellbeing subscription service developed specifically to support mothers with their emotional, physical and nutritional requirements post-birth, as well as provide access to expert, midwife-led baby advice.

One in 10 new mums experiences mental health challenges, including postnatal depression, up to one year after giving birth, while more than 73 percent experience nutritional depletion after having a baby, and the stark lack of postpartum care in the UK became a reality for Hanna and Hannah after having their children.

Often feeling overwhelmed and

unsure where to turn, the two women decided they wanted to launch a service that not only provides women with fundamental support during the transformative postpartum period but also creates a welcoming community of new mums all navigating early motherhood together.

Speaking about how the new brand was established, Hanna said: “A lot of new mums experience a whole range of emotions after they have a baby, but until I had my daughter in 2023, I didn’t appreciate just how much of a rollercoaster early motherhood can be. Truly no-one tells you just how hard those early months sometimes are.

“One of the things that shocked me most about this time in my life is the lack of support and places to turn to when you’re finding it tough - there were several times when I’d be up in the night with my baby not knowing which way to turn for guidance. There is a lot of information on Google but it’s hard to know what to trust.

“I know that Hannah experienced similar feelings, and we started talking about how great it would be to introduce a new platform for women to use in those intense early days after becoming a mum that is trusted and approved by experts - and so, Life Postpartum was born!”

Through its affordable, accessible and personalised subscriptionbased membership packages, Life Postpartum provides women with tailored exercise and rehabilitation

plans and nourishing recipes, as well as trusted advice on key topics like pelvic floor recovery, hormonal analysis and reporting, all of which is specially personalised to the postpartum stage they’re in.

All compiled by a team of postpartum-specialised physiotherapists, clinical psychologists, nutritionists, personal trainers and hormone specialists, members receive a dedicated action plan, which will direct them to the Life Postpartum content that will help them the most, along with bespoke insights into their birth recovery to help them navigate the transition into motherhood.

Hannah comments: “The postpartum period is such

a transformative time; I couldn’t believe just how little comprehensive support for mums there is out there for this profound life stage.

“This is why we’ve launched Life Postpartum, to help mothers feel more supported and understood, leading to healthier, more balanced experiences of early motherhood. After all, a healed, replenished mother provides the essential foundation for her newborn to flourish!

“Hanna and I are passionate about supporting the health of new

balancing, to nurture both mother and baby through this magical time.”

Offering a host of support services, from on-demand, expert-led content that’s available 24/7 to live sessions with specialists in postpartum care, Life Postpartum provides new mums with professional advice and a safe community space when they need support the most.

Prices for the brand’s membership options range from £9.99 per month to £99.99 per year for the complete package, which includes a care package packed with nutrient dense

Major arts space expansion at Sunny Bank Mills

Sunny Bank Mills has announced a major expansion of artists’ studio spaces at its Mills site in Farsley, Leeds as a direct response to the closure of artists’ studio spaces in the city.

Sunny Banks Mills’ arts director Anna Turzynski said: “During my first year of working at Sunny Bank Mills, I’ve watched at least six iconic art spaces in Leeds close. After spending three years of my life championing the culture of our city, it was devastating to feel the sector being forced out of Leeds. Fortunately, after speaking to my peers and listening to artists, I realised that Sunny Bank Mills was in a unique position to help. We have acres of amazing industrial space here at the Mills and a strong existing creative community, so it made complete sense to create more studios and workspaces for creative people.

She continued: “Having visited studio spaces across the country like Rouge Studios in Manchester, Cockpit in London and Assembly House just

down the road in Armley I am keen to explore how we can support artists with more than just space. Whether that be opportunities to stock work in our on-site Gallery Shop, business development advice, funding support or a sense of community through our Open Studios programme – it feels like there are lots of opportunities. We were inundated with applications for studio space and the cohort who have joined

us are amazing. It’s only encouraged us to find more space for artists, so keep an eye on our website and social media if you are looking for a place to home your creative practice.”

William Gaunt, joint managing director said: “Ten years ago we had just 9 artists’ studio spaces, now I’m proud to say we have 48 studio spaces which are all filled, and we hope to grow that number in the years to come. Sunny Bank Mills has been and is a place of making, so it is a great privilege to have so many talented artists and makers working and developing their varied practices here. The latest release of studios in Red Lane Mill was formerly where the pattern looms operated, producing new designs to be sold across the world – so a truly creative space.”

The next Sunny Bank Mills Open Studios event is Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th September 2025

Championing T Level Employers at Kirklees College

At the end of the academic year, the Kirklees College Business Development team held a special thank you lunch to celebrate and acknowledge some of the fantastic employers who have supported the college’s T Level students through their industry placements

T Levels are two-year study programmes, equivalent to three A-Levels, that have a strong emphasis on practical learning and work placement, which is a compulsory requirement of the qualification, preparing students for the world of work and further study. This event was a chance for the team

to show their appreciation for the time, guidance and opportunities these employer partners provide to T Level students, and it turned into a truly inspiring afternoon. Several students stood up to share their experiences. Hearing first-hand how their placements shaped their

confidence, developed their skills, and clarified their future goals was a proud reminder of the real-world impact of T Level learning.

Kirklees College works with an extensive network of employers, both at regional and national level, to deliver work placement opportunities to T Level students on programmes such as Health and Social Care, Engineering, Education and Early Years, and more.

If you are a local employer and want to help shape the next generation workforce through T Level placements, please visit our employer page for more information.

The Sisterhood takes over in Leeds

This summer Leeds and Manchester sports bar The Brotherhood of Pursuits and Pastimes is putting the spotlight firmly on women’s sport as the country gears up to support the Lionesses and the Women’s England Rugby World cup team.

Throughout July, August and September the popular venue will once again rebrand as The Sisterhood, becoming the beating heart of both tournaments as the England team head to Switzerland to defend their title and England prepares to host the Women’s Rugby World Cup.

Building on the success of the powerful rebrand, which was first created during the Women’s Euros 2022, The Sisterhood returns with even more for the women’s sports community with a programme that’s louder and more inclusive than ever before.

Sponsored by Heineken, The Sisterhood campaign champions women in sport with a bold, community-first approach that engages local women’s football and rugby clubs, celebrates representation and supports equality in the game.

For the Euros 2025 The Sisterhood will go beyond the screens to create a live, immersive experience rooted in unity from the first whistle to the final goal.

Customers can expect an electric match day experience with both venues decked out with

Sisterhood England bunting and every Lioness match celebrated with table favours and special goodies for fans. Plus, there’ll be a free pint of Heineken for every single customer when the first England goal is scored in the tournament.

There’ll also be food and drink promotions, confetti cannons to celebrate those all-important goals and live drummers and saxophone players to turn the pre- and postmatch build-up into a high-energy celebration.

Throughout August and September all eyes will be on the women’s Rugby World Cup, which has been expanded to include 16 teams and

will be hosted across eight venues and cities throughout England.

Fans can expect the same unbeatable atmosphere and fun throughout the tournament, with plenty of surprises and celebrations planned to make every match one to remember.

The Brotherhood director and founder, Seema Dhiman, said: “The Sisterhood is more than a name change, it’s a statement of solidarity, celebration, and support for women in sport. We hope to engage local communities, particularly women’s football and rugby clubs, and promote greater inclusivity and representation in the game.”

Whether you're a lifelong supporter

or a new fan of the Lionesses or women’s rugby, The Sisterhood promises to create a space this summer where the whole community comes together to celebrate the incredible future of women’s sport.

Seema added: “It’s going to be more than watching a game, it promises to be an immersive experience that brings people together in full voice setting the tone for two tournaments the nation won’t forget and, fingers crossed, triumph for England in both!”

The campaign will also support Her Game Too, a charity championing gender inclusivity in sport, amplifying the voices of women and girls across the football community.

Her Game Too CEO and founder, Caz May, said: “This summer belongs to women’s sport, and we’re absolutely thrilled to see The Brotherhood rebrand again as The Sisterhood. It is one of the only venues in the UK championing women’s sport in such a bold and meaningful way promoting inclusivity, and community, which reflects exactly what Her Game Too stands for.

“Initiatives like this not only create incredible atmospheres for fans but also help push the conversation forward about equality in sport. We’re incredibly grateful for the support and proud to be part of a campaign that celebrates women and girls at every level of their game.

Garden designer celebrated by TV gardening expert

A local garden designer who this year is celebrating 20 years in business after switching careers from a Civil Service PA to a garden designer and Horticulturist, decided she wanted to mark the occasion with something that would leave a legacy.

She was delighted to receive the support of BBC Gardener’s World presenter and author, Adam Frost, when she approached him about being involved, after Max chatted to him at his own book signing at Kings

Hall in Ilkley earlier this year. Adam Frost has written the Foreword.

In the book Max Nelson, 59, who is also a Guest Speaker at Horticultural Talks and a lecturer on Horticulture

at Shipley College, looks at how to create different kinds of gardens, from Sanctuary Gardens, to Easy Care Gardens, to Gardens for Fun and Hobbies, to Gardens for Families or Four Legged Friends and features many gardens from Ilkley and across the Wharfe Valley.

Within the book she’s also explored what gardens mean to people and where the power comes from creating a garden that suits your life. Each chapter also has an area for notes and self reflection so the reader can jot down their thoughts on what they would like to achieve.

Customer reflections shared include them feeling “at peace”, “relaxed”, and “inspired” by their gardens, and one client Mary, noted “For me our garden symbolises the triumph of hope over adversity - and it’s a

place to rest the mind and delight the senses”. Another, Alison, said her garden gives her “a big wrap around hug”.

Max’s own reflections shared that “In 2021 my garden became my escape when I was supporting and caring for my father, who moved in with us towards the end of his days. Often half an hour in the garden before my day started as my time to reset, to recalibrate, to just be me. I might choose to pot plants, or harvest our sweet peas as a distraction from real life,

or sometimes just wander around in my dressing gown experiencing the textures and fragrances of the plants whilst I listened to the birds. Our garden was there for me everyday, however I needed it”.

Adam, who is a Chelsea Flower Show award winner said:“Gardens mean different things to different people and in this book Max shows how outdoor spaces can play a bigger role in our wellbeing than we sometimes realise. Also, it’s not about having perfect gardens - it’s about real ones, used and loved in everyday life”.

Keen to mark her anniversary with something that would enable her to give back to others, sharing her knowledge and advice, it was important to Max to celebrate the clients she’s worked with to date as well as her own journey in business. The culmination of this was an afternoon tea book launch at Fleur, in Leeds City Centre last weekend. Max also paid tribute to her husband, Neil, at the launch. Over the years she has adapted their garden to provide solace for Neil, who now has dementia. Also a gardener, Neil was a huge inspiration for Max as she changed career and she credits him as being the best teacher. To thank him, Max had a special edition of the book printed in large format, to enable him to read and enjoy it too.

She also raised £294 for NHS Wellbeing Gardens, at St James Hospital at Leeds, which Adam Frost has also been a part of. This came from donations at the book launch, and predominantly through auctioning off her first copy of the book, for which a donation of £250 was made by Max’s first ever client, Shelley Wolfson from Wyke.

“It all feels like a bit of a dream now”, says Max, who over the years has won many awards for her gardens, including Harrogate Flower Show, and Leeds in Bloom. “Twenty years of designing gardens has enriched my life and I honestly still find this job such a joy. I can’t really process that I have written a book, and that the launch was mine - not someone else's. It was the most gorgeous day, a way to celebrate clients and also my own journey over the last 20 years - it wasn’t an easy process to get this book out -but I’m so glad I did it!”.

The book is available to purchase in hardback, paperback or oversized copy from Maxine’s website - Gardens By Max https:// gardensbymax.co.uk/

Member Spotlight

This month's spotlight falls on Lois Kirtlan, owner of Hetty and Betty

The classic British Afternoon Tea will be celebrated during the week of 11th-17th August, for National Afternoon Tea Week with dainty sandwiches, cakes and scones. However, a restaurant in North Yorkshire, has thrown salt and vinegar all over this classic dish!

Hetty & Betty, in Whitby, has created a real twist on the traditional afternoon tea, with their Fish and Chips version.

Created in 2018, the tea is served on a three tier stand, and comprises of cod and chips for two at the bottom; mushy peas, bread and butter in the middle; and on the top is a homemade scone with cream and jam.

Owner and Yorkshire Businesswoman member Lois Kirtlan explained how and why the dish was created: “When we took over the business seven years ago we knew we would have to innovate to stand out in a town famous for fish and chips. My vision was to serve afternoon teas by the sea, and whilst everyone said it was a lovely idea, they all pointed out people come to Whitby for fish and chips. My stubbornness kicked in, and I combined the two, to create the Fish and Chips Afternoon Tea.”

Whilst the issue of whether it is an “Afternoon Tea” has become a topic much discussed on social media, there’s no doubt it’s become a very popular treat for visitors and locals alike in Whitby.

Lois continued “We have gone

viral a few times now, with food bloggers coming and enjoying the tea. It’s more than just a meal. It’s an experience. And people are coming to us from all over the country and even overseas to enjoy it.”

The tea caused a stir on social media when American vlogger Kalani Ghost Hunter reviewed it, and it reached over 3 million views. Giving the Fish and Chips Afternoon Tea an overall rating of 8.2, he added his summary: “If I could sum Yorkshire up in one dish, it would be this one”.

Aware of the controversy the tea has created with die hard Afternoon Tea fans, Lois said “It’s something different, something quirky and has given lots of people a great experience. We know it’s not for everyone, and so we also offer a traditional Afternoon Tea too.”

The Fish and Chips Afternoon Tea also has vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and dairy free options."

MakerWorld in urgent hunt for new Huddersfield town centre home

MakerWorld, the much-loved creative space at the heart of Huddersfield town centre, is urgently seeking a new home following the planned regeneration of the Piazza Centre. The closure will leave hundreds of local children and families without access to the unique, inclusive experiences that MakerWorld provides.

Since opening, MakerWorld has established itself as a popular hub of creativity and community engagement in Huddersfield. In 2024 it took on another unit and, in partnership with Skate It Yourself, opened a skatepark and youth club to meet the needs of young people in the town centre. MakerWorld is now piloting a children’s art gallery in the space.

Between November 2023 and November 2024, MakerWorld welcomed 3,909 visits from children aged 2-13, delivered 108 free sessions and registered 350 families. The project has been particularly successful in reaching diverse and often underserved groups, with 10% of young attendees and 9% of parents or carers identifying as disabled or neurodivergent and 23% of participants qualifying for pupil premium (on par with the Kirklees average of 24%).

Most strikingly, 75% of families say MakerWorld is the main reason they visit Huddersfield, testament to its role in revitalising the town centre and providing a lifeline for families seeking free, high-quality creative activities.

“MakerWorld is more than just a workshop space and gallery, it’s a

community hub that brings people together, supports wellbeing and gives children and families a reason to come into the town centre,” said Chloe Williams, director of The Children’s Art

School, the organisation behind the MakerWorld initiative, “With the loss of our home in the Creative Piazza, these families face the heartbreaking prospect of losing access to a beloved resource. We are on a real countdown now.”

This summer MakerWorld is delivering more than 50 workshops and activities. The need for vibrant, accessible public spaces in Huddersfield has never been stronger and MakerWorld is appealing to local authorities, businesses and the wider community to help find a new venue and ensure that this vital resource continues to serve Huddersfield’s families.

Can you help find a new home for MakerWorld?

Selling your business ahead of retirement

‘What am I going to do with all this free time?', 'How much can I afford to spend each year?’, ‘How do pensions work?’ These are the challenging questions for many approaching retirement. And for business owners, the situation is even more complex.

‘How will I move on from the business which has been my life’s work?’, ‘What will happen to the business and its employees once I’m gone?’, ‘Is there an identifiable successor within the business?’

Corporate finance specialists can give structure to these problems. They help you find buyers/lenders so you can smoothly exit your business, passing it on to successors. But there is one burning question which perhaps supersedes all: ‘How much can I sell the business for?’

Rationalise your position

Whether your valuation or ultimate sale price exceeds or falls short of expectations, there are likely to be emotional hurdles to overcome.

As a hard-won asset that you are looking to sell, your business is not just a monetary figure, it is a culmination of your life’s work. If you receive a valuation that falls short of what you think the business is worth, it may be difficult to not take personally.

Many factors determine a business’s value, most of which will change over time (production costs, buyers in the market, interest rates etc.). This variability can provide a reason to decline an offer and wait for more favourable conditions. However,

turning down an offer now comes with the cost of waiting for another, with no guarantee that the next offer will be better, and may even be worse.

Of course, every situation is unique. But for those hovering between accepting or declining an offer, the following may be useful.

Beyond the sale

On the other side of a sale, you need to tackle the next big question: “What do you want to do with your retirement?”

During my career in financial advice, I have heard a plethora of retirement plans. From fixing an old Volkswagen Kombi and taking a couple of months touring it around the British coastline, to contributing to the costs of grandchildren’s school fees or spending a year in India.

But most often, clients have told me that their retirement plans are not fully

developed. An unexpected element of my job involves establishing what it is that clients actually want from their lives beyond their careers.

Organise your objectives

Take the time to reflect and seek guidance as you refine your retirement plans. Remember, this is potentially decades of your future we're planning, so it deserves thoughtful consideration and care.

To develop a comprehensive plan, we work off these objectives to agree on their monetary values in today’s terms. These may look something like:

Regular expenditure

• £30,000 – retirement living expense – annually

• £25,000 – car upgrade – every four years

• £7,000 – school fee contribution, two grandchildren – between their ages 7 and 18

One-off expenditure

• £15,000 - retirement commencement holiday – at retirement / 60

• £10,000 – wedding gifts for each grandchild – from their ages of 25

*Inflation assumed at 3.00% per annum.

Having identified expenditure over time, we then review your assets and future income streams to cover this expenditure:

Liquid Assets

• £900,000 – net business sale proceeds

• £200,000 – pension

• £80,000 – stocks and shares ISA

£1,180,000 – Total Assumed growth rate of 4% net of investment charges and tax.

Future Income Streams

(today’s terms)

£11,973 – full state pension –commencing from age 67

• Market crashes and other investment fluctuations

• A partner’s assets which may include a state pension

• Tax-efficiencies that your financial planner will help you implement

• Despite its relative simplicity, the example still demonstrates a modern approach to retirement planning, providing you with a reasoned understanding of what can be accomplished with your business sale proceeds.

In this example – and if we remove the expenditure met by the state pension – the £1,180,000 starting liquid assets still successfully covers the remaining £2,478,000 (and does so with money left to spare).

When used to cover the expenses detailed above, total liquid assets of £1,180,000 will diminish over time, leaving around £320,000 remaining at the end of the plan.

This example is simplistic and the following are some considerations that have been ignored, but would be accounted for by a good financial planner:

We’re here to help

After looking at a simple version of a retirement plan, is this what you anticipated? Do you have this level

of understanding about your own situation? If not, do you believe having such an understanding would assist you in deciding whether to accept an offer?

Ultimately, how far your money goes will be determined by how well it is managed. At Quilter Cheviot, we work with clients to deliver the best outcomes when they sell their businesses. We also help build a tax efficient, intelligently invested plan that gives you a clear picture of the retirement your sale proceeds could fund.

With this understanding you will be better equipped to decide whether to proceed with the offer presented.

Pregnancy and newborn skincare brand is reborn

Award-winning pregnancy and newborn skincare brand, My Expert Midwife, has announced a significant brand relaunch, backed by a £1.5m investment to accelerate growth and reinforce its unwavering mission to support parents through their pregnancy and early parenting journey.

Co-founded in 2017 by Registered Midwife Lesley Gilchrist, the brand has built a loyal following for its straighttalking, solution-focused products that have been developed by midwives to tackle the real, everyday challenges faced by parents. Now, My Expert Midwife enters a new phase with refreshed branding, newly designed packaging, and the launch of a bold campaign platform: ‘Always on Call’.

This new creative platform encapsulates the brand’s commitment to being a trusted, expert presence for parents, day or night. It’s a message that comes to life not just through campaign content, but also with the launch of the brand’s upgraded e-commerce site, featuring the new ‘Call the Midwife’

live chat function, connecting users directly with a qualified midwife.

In a major milestone, as part the brand’s wider integrated marketing strategy, My Expert Midwife has launched its first-ever national multi-media campaign in partnership with Alchemy Media. Designed to dramatically scale brand awareness, the campaign is set to deliver an estimated 8.5 million impacts across the core pregnancy and newborn target audience and will span a targeted mix of video placements, audio, publisher and out of home channels including SVOD platforms Netflix, Amazon, and Disney, YouTube; as well as digital activations and on social media. The brand is also investing in audio and visual-first platforms

through high-reach industry podcast sponsorships, and high-impact digital six-sheet placements in key locations nationwide.

The campaign will reach millions of parents and parents-to-be, driving home the message that My Expert Midwife is there to deliver expert guidance and products that are backed by science and industryleading knowledge. The brand is also investing in an always-on PR strategy to raise awareness, educate consumers, and build authority through trusted expert voices, partnering with creative communications agency, Hatch.

As part of the rebrand, My Expert Midwife has unveiled a bold new visual identity, designed to reflect the brand’s expert credentials while standing out with clarity and confidence on shelf. The sleek, contemporary packaging features updated baby pink and baby blue hues, chosen to align with the

brand’s evolved and empowering personality. The result is a brighter, more cohesive look that captures attention while reinforcing trust. Branding and marketing agency, Belief Machines, played a key role in driving My Expert Midwife’s design development on product and packaging; while the brand’s creative agency, Syn, has been instrumental in shaping the refreshed brand direction and tone of voice, ensuring that the expertise and authority at the heart of the brand is more clearly communicated to consumers than ever before.

In 2024, My Expert Midwife expanded its distribution footprint, launching into retail giants, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons, adding to an already impressive roster of retail partners including Boots, Asda, John Lewis, Sephora, Ocado, and Amazon. Since the recent roll out of the new identity, the brand’s baby care range went live in-store and online at Boots, where its Dribble Defence sold out shortly after launch, and the No Harm Bum Balm delivered a sales increase of nearly +100%.

As part of this growth, My Expert Midwife is expanding its network

of resident midwives and ‘MEMbassadors’ to build a community that reflects and supports the lived experiences of modern parenthood. The brand is also due to enlist a further 15 practicing midwives from across the UK to build its brand and community.

Rachel Costello, chief marketing officer commented: “This brand refresh comes at a pivotal moment for us. It’s not just about creating products that look good; it’s about clearly showing consumers who we are and what we stand for.

“We’re deeply committed to supporting new parents, not only through our effective product offering but also through trusted expert advice. That support has always been at the heart of our brand. It’s what inspired us from the start and remains the foundation of this rebirth. Listening to our customers is essential to everything we do at My Expert Midwife, and we’re dedicated to developing solutions that truly address the real challenges that our consumers face. Our priority for this year is continuing to develop the brand to ensure it evolves to represent the people who truly matter - mothers and new parents navigating this incredible time of their lives.”

Karen Doran, CEO said: "This investment marks a transformational moment for us, we're building on the strong foundation that Lesley created, and this investment allows us to evolve every part of the business to better serve our growing community of parents. We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved to date, and now we’re focused on expanding our reach and continuing to innovate with products and services that put parents first. We’re creating something meaningful and lasting- and this is only the beginning."

Luxury glamping pods to join Yorkshire Dales cycling hotspot

A much-loved Yorkshire Dales cycling hub is gearing up for a major new chapter with the addition of luxury glamping pods, thanks to financial support from Allica Bank – a challenger bank for established businesses.

Dales Bike Centre, based in Fremington, near Reeth, is already a go-to destination for cyclists, walkers and cake-lovers alike from across the region and beyond. Now, with new plans in place, the familyrun business is preparing to offer

stylish glamping accommodation alongside its popular ride, eat and stay experience.

Owned and run by husband-andwife team Stu and Brenda Price, Dales Bike Centre has been part

of the Swaledale community since 2009. The couple’s vision – to create a welcoming, sustainable base for cyclists to enjoy the beauty of the Dales – has grown into a thriving local hub with a strong reputation across Yorkshire and the entire UK.

Visitors to Dales Bike Centre can hire a range of bikes, from children’s options to high-spec

e-bikes, download GPX routes, or join guided rides led by the centre’s experienced team. The on-site workshop is a trusted service point for many local riders and visiting cyclists and is an authorised dealer for both Orange Bikes and Trek.

The Cakery Café is well-loved for its homemade cakes, breakfasts and lunches, with ingredients sourced locally where possible.

Since its 2022 extension, it’s also become a space for community events and regular meetups, with a large outdoor area for visitors to enjoy in warmer months.

Dales Bike Centre employs staff from around ten local families, many of whom have been with the business since its early days.

enjoy the Dales in comfort while staying close to the action!

“We’ve always wanted to offer something that blends our love for the outdoors with a bit of luxury,” said Brenda Price. “The pods are warm, comfortable and self-contained - ideal for cyclists, walkers or couples looking to unwind with a slice of cake and some great Yorkshire air.”

Dales Bike Centre is exactly the kind of business Allica is here to support – rooted in the community, full of passion and ideas, and ready to grow...

The Prices have prioritised sustainability from the start, repurposing original buildings and working with local suppliers for everything from food to building materials.

Accommodation includes the Cakery Loft – a self-contained unit sleeping four – and group-friendly bunk rooms, with secure bike storage. With planning restrictions limiting previous expansion ideas, and a growing demand for more premium stays, the new glamping pods mark an exciting step forward.

Opening at the start of this month, the glamping pods will provide guests with a comfy kingsize bed, en-suite shower room, kitchen area and private seating space – all nestled in the idyllic Yorkshire countryside. They’re a frills-included alternative to traditional camping and welcome new option for those wanting to

The plans were made possible thanks to a loan from Allica Bank, with relationship manager Andy Castle working closely with the couple to secure the funding.

“Allica really understood what we’re about – it’s not just a business, it’s our life’s work,” Brenda added. “Andrew took the time to get to know us, the area and our vision. This next chapter wouldn’t be happening without them.”

Andy said: “Dales Bike Centre is exactly the kind of business Allica is here to support – rooted in the community, full of passion and ideas, and ready to grow. Stu and Brenda have created something special, and I’m delighted we’ve been able to help them take this next step.”

Allica were introduced to Dales Bike Centre by Jon Shipton of Confianza Advisory. Jon advised Stu and Brenda on business planning and securing funding for their original extension in 2022, as well as supporting this new round of funding from Allica. Jon said: “It has been a pleasure advising Stu and Brenda to help them achieve their vision for the business. Now that the development is complete, so many more customers will be able to enjoy these wonderful facilities, set in such a beautiful part of the Yorkshire Dales.”

Laura Greenwood named a finalist in the 2025Allica Bank Great British EntrepreneurAward

Huddersfield-based Laura Greenwood has been named a finalist in the 2025 Allica Bank Great British Entrepreneur Awards, short-listed in the Randal Foundation Entrepreneur of the Year category. This award is sponsored by Randal Foundation

Known as “The Grammys of Entrepreneurship”, the awards celebrate the most exceptional and inspiring business stories across the UK. This year’s shortlist includes over 800 entrepreneurs from every nation and region of the UK, all recognised for their innovation, impact and resilience.

This year’s finalists:

• Employ over 25,000 people across the UK

• Expect to create more than 9,000 new jobs over the next year

• Generate a combined turnover of £2.25 billion

• Represent an average business age of six years

Laura Greenwood, founder and clinical lead of ‘Laura Greenwood Therapy’, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be named a finalist in such a prestigious award and for this category too, at what I believe is still such an early stage of our journey, only 3.5 years in. It is an honour, actually and one I do not take lightly. It was only last year that I fully selfidentified as a ‘leader’.

I am a clinician at heart and genuinely want to do good in the world. Becoming an entrepreneur was something that almost found me, rather than me seeking it. When I saw how much was missing in how we both value and support parents, children and families in our society.

As a team we have some many ambitious plans to grow, to help more people through developing more accessible services and I cannot wait to make it all happen! Whilst also staying true to living by my own values, managing my own wellbeing, keeping on mission, and never compromising on clinical quality.

My hope is that my story of being a clinician with an idea of how she could change the world, and believed she could do it…is an inspiration to anyone, who feels stuck, unhappy, unfulfilled in their life, or has a burning desire to

do something new, you really can do anything you set your mind to.”

Conrad Ford, chief product & strategy officer at Allica said: "We’re consistently inspired by the energy and strength of UK SMEs. This year’s finalists – from early-stage start-ups to established and family businesses – represent a vital force in the British economy, driving innovation, creating jobs, and making a real difference in their communities. We’re proud to support the Great British Entrepreneur Awards for the third year in a row, recognising these outstanding business leaders who are not only demonstrating resilience in a challenging business environment but are paving the way for future entrepreneurs to follow."Frankie James, founder of the Great British Entrepreneur Awards, added: “We’re so proud to reveal this year’s shortlist, a truly remarkable group of founders who are changing lives and transforming industries. The quality of entries gets stronger every year, and it’s clear that the entrepreneurial spirit in the UK is more alive than ever.

Many of our finalists go on to become household names, and we can’t wait to watch what this year’s cohort achieves next.”

Winners will be announced at a prestigious awards ceremony on November 17th, at London’s Grosvenor House, where over 1,500 entrepreneurs, investors and business leaders will come together to celebrate entrepreneurial success.

In partnership with Arqiva, who are donating £10,000 to the project, the DPA will be providing young people between the ages of 11-19 in the Two Ridings area with, not only a laptop, but digital literacy workshops and online access support to boost digital inclusion.

Elizabeth Anderson, CEO of the Digital Poverty Alliance, commented: “Essential services such as education, healthcare, and banking continue to move online, making digital access no longer a luxury but a necessity. To fully participate in modern society, people need a reliable device, digital skills, and a stable internet connection.

Unfortunately, this level of access is still out of reach for over 19 million people across the UK, particularly for young people in underserved communities. Without the right tools, they risk falling behind in school, missing out on job opportunities, and being excluded from basic services that many of us take for granted.”

In the weeks following the launch of the Government’s Digital Inclusiin Action Plan the importance of schemes such as Tech4Youth becomes that much more apparent. Through donating,

refurbishing and redistributing devices, we can continue to bring people, who otherwise struggle to afford the devices they need, back online and get unused devices out of drawers and into homes that need them.”

The Yorkshire Coast expansion follows the success of earlier Tech4Youth programmes and comes at a time when digital access is more important than ever. Whether for completing homework, applying for jobs, or staying in touch with essential services, reliable digital connectivity has become a basic requirement for participation in modern life.

A spokesperson from Arqiva, said: “We’re proud to be partnering with the Digital Poverty Alliance to support young people across the Yorkshire Coast. As a business rooted in connectivity, we understand the critical importance of digital access, and we’re committed to playing our part in closing the gap for those most at risk of exclusion.”

The initiative will be delivered in close collaboration with local community organisations, ensuring that support reaches those who need it most. The digital literacy workshops, designed to be practical and engaging, will cover topics ranging from basic IT skills and internet safety to using online tools for learning and job searching.

I’m launching a tech company. Who’d have thought it? Not me.

You know those stories we tell ourselves? Or the ones we hold on to from our childhood or from other people?

I told myself since school that I was rubbish at maths, yet I became an accountant. I told myself I was rubbish at sports (scarred by the years of wearing horrid culottes in P.E) yet I became a bodybuilder who won trophies, like I promised my daughter I would, and qualified for the most prestigious amateur

body-building show in the world The Arnolds.

The difference is the stories I’ve told myself throughout my life haven’t stopped me.

The story I briefly told myself this time was – ‘A tech founder, who do I think I am? I can barely work my iPhone!’ Not true. Yes, I’m a non-technical founder but I’m learning fast and building a team.

The idea came after an evening in a financial planning clients’ home, hers and her daughters’ safe place where we walked through her financial life plan. I distinctly remember her thanking me and saying ‘Suz, I wish I could put you in my pocket’.

There are millions of us that weren’t taught about personal finances growing up yet are ashamed of what we don’t know now as adults. Knowledge alone isn’t enough; we need take action too.

Women need to build more wealth. Fact. The UK gender pension gap being 42% by age 64 is proof of that alone.

The obvious solution to help more women build wealth is through tech. So off I trot to go build an app, right?!

Before we start the full build, I’m building the Minimal Viable Product myself with the help of AI. I know it’s a real buzz word but the technological advances that have come to market within the last 12 months have allowed me to build this with the investment of only my time so far. This first version will allow me to test if the features I want to build will help women in the way I think they will. If you want to gain access to it, please reach out to me on LinkedIn.

So, who do I think I am? I’m Suz Ferreira and I’m founding a tech company to help women build more wealth. I’d love for you to connect with me and follow along on the journey.

Direct from the West End Fawlty Towers comes to Yorkshire

Casting has been announced for the UK and Ireland tour of John Cleese’s Fawlty Towers – The Play. Following the hugely successful and critically acclaimed West End run earlier this year and a return three-month summer season this June, “the funniest show in town” (Daily Express) will embark on a major 10-month tour from 30 September 2025 - August 2026. Tickets are on sale now from FawltyTowersTour.co.uk.

This “as good as comedy gets” production (Sunday Times) – which first opened in May 2024 to a host of

rave reviews - is directed by originating West End director Caroline Jay Ranger, and stars Danny Bayne as Basil Fawlty,

Mia Austen as Sybil, Hemi Yeroham reprising his role as Manuel, Joanne Clifton as Polly, Paul Nicholas reprising his role as The Major and Jemma Churchill as Mrs Richards.

Nearly 50 years since Fawlty Towers was first broadcast on BBC Two on 19 September 1975, comedy legend John Cleese, who originally co-wrote the “greatest British sitcom of all time” (Radio Times) with Connie Booth, has chosen three of his favourite original TV episodes - ‘The Hotel Inspector’ and ‘The Germans’ from series one and ‘Communication Problems’ from series two - and adapted them into a two-hour play, complete with a new finale.

Theatre goers across the country are in for a treat as this “comedy masterpiece makes a seamless transition to the stage” (The Arts Desk) to deliver “an indisputably funny evening” (Daily Telegraph), as “from the moment

Basil walks on stage, the audience start laughing” (Daily Mail) whilst watching “some of the best punchlines ever written” (London Theatre). To quote Broadway World; “if you loved the original TV series, you will adore this show”.

John Cleese said: “I’m thrilled with the top-class group of comedy actors that we've assembled for the UK tour of Fawlty Towers - The Play which begins in September. September also marks exactly 50 years since the first ever TV episode was broadcast on the BBC. I never thought that all these years later the stage show would get the reception that it has. But here we are, still making theatres rock with laughter.”

The play also features other beloved characters from the original TV sitcom: Mr Hutchinson / Wilhelm played by Greg Haiste; Miss Tibbs played by Emily Winter; Miss Gatsby played by Dawn Buckland; Mr Thurston / Günter played by John Hasler; Mr Walt played by Adam Elliott; Taxi Driver/ Mr Firkins / Mr Kerr / Mr Sharp played by Neil Stewart; and Johanna

and Liz (Hotel Guest) played by Josie Brightwell. Completing the company of players are Ashleigh Harvey playing Debbie (Hotel Guest), Ben Jacobson playing Ken (Hotel Guest), Matthew Gordon playing Mr Dale (Hotel Guest) and Raymond Rose playing Philip (Hotel Guest).

Following a tip off that hotel inspectors may be visiting and eager to impress, Basil attempts to ingratiate himself with guests that he suspects are there to critique the establishment. The situation is further plagued by a party of Germans, the deaf and dotty guestfrom-hell, Mrs Richards, whose infuriating complaints prevent him from hiding a gambling win from his ever vigilant and bossy wife, Sybil. Together they run their hotel with a little help from the unflappable Polly, and very little help at all from Manuel, the trainee waiter from Barcelona who is the butt of Fawlty’s frustration.

Set in a fictional hotel in the seaside town of Torquay, only 12 half hour episodes of the original BBC comedy were ever made. Based on a real-life

hotel owner, Donald Sinclair. John Cleese came up with the idea for the character Basil Fawlty when he stayed at Sinclair’s Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay and became fascinated with his incredibly rude behaviour.

The iconic TV show won many awards and plaudits including two BAFTAS for Best Situation Comedy and in 2000 it was voted the best British programme of all time in a British Film Institute poll.

So where can you see the iconic show:

• Leeds Grand Theatre 6th-10th January 2026

• Bradford Alhambra – 24th-28th March 2026

• Hull New Theatre 12th-16th May

• York Grand Opera House 19th23rd May

Capturing a brand story by the sea,

toes in the sand, camera in hand.

Who doesn’t love a trip to the coast? Sand between your toes, the rhythmic swoosh of the waves and a good old trousers-rolledup-to-your-knees paddle.

So, when our client needed a brand refresh photoshoot with a lighthouse backdrop, we suggested a trip to Flamborough North Landing for the day. Not only is it a fully working lighthouse but it’s situated on the fabulous Yorkshire coastline with dramatic cliffs and beautiful beaches; and importantly, a café packed with post-shoot treats!

Meet Kay Thompson-Barker

Kay is the founder of Sea Light Development, where she offers support in executive coaching, leadership team facilitation, manager development, team effectiveness, and interpersonal skills training.

Sea Light Development is named after a 900-nautical-mile sailing journey Kay made from Corfu to Menorca. When engine failure forced the crew to rely on wind power alone, they navigated day and night using only radar, lighthouses, and the lights of passing boats.

That experience now serves as a powerful metaphor in her work: helping leaders set direction, navigate uncertainty, and unlock the full potential of their people.

The photoshoot

We imagined a dramatic shot of Kay with the lighthouse behind her;

strong, purposeful, and in motion. So, coat billowing in the breeze, she walked confidently toward the camera.

The beach and surrounding cliffs turned out to be a real bonus: packed with colour, texture and contrast that tied in beautifully with Kay’s outfit.

We scrambled over a few rocks and stumbled across a natural stone arch nestled between the cliffs. Through it, the sea and sky opened with the sea light sitting in the distance, neatly framed by the curve of the arch.

These photos transformed Kay’s website. Gone are the generic stock

photos - now it’s full of interest, personality and purposeful imagery that reflects her story and what she stands for.

Of course, humping two camera bags, a lighting kit, stands and soft boxes up and down a cliff face earned us a welldeserved reward at the café!

If you’re ready for the world to see you and your business, we’d love to help you stand out with photography that’s purposeful, powerful and personal.

Here’s

to the annual hosepipe ban as we watch the torrential rain!

Well, here we are again. It is the quintessential English midsummer. It’s the time for Pimm’s on the lawn, barbecue dinners and of course, the annual hosepipe ban whilst we shelter from the torrential rain! What a mixture of weather we’ve had.

2025 has brought us the warmest and sunniest spring on record, with June being the warmest month on record for England. And interspersed with forceful rainstorms, at the of writing

we are experiencing our third heatwave of the year!

Our changing climate brings fresh challenges to gardeners, and we are all

looking for ways to adapt the apparent shifting of the seasons. If you cast your mind to this time last year, we had an awful time of it. The rain seemed never-ending. Many of my crops were a complete wash-out and potatoes rotted away in the ground. Several varieties simply failed to thrive. I was far more hopeful for this growing season; however, Mother Nature does like to keep me on my toes, and having conducted a soil test, I was dismayed to find that two of my beds were completely deficient in vital nutrients. I had to let the soil lay fallow this year, and instead of the usual squashes and root vegetables, I grew green manure which I have now strimmed down to the ground, and I shall dig in to lock in the nitrogen. There’s nothing more dispiriting than the sight of an empty bed that cannot be used. However, I am optimistic that by adding some rich compost produced by the hot composter in my back garden, I shall be able to restore the area for next year. If you are experiencing similar failures in your garden, it might well be that the huge amounts of rain, we experienced last year have depleted the soil.

That said, the Brussel Sprouts seem to be coming along well, and I have had my first harvest of new potatoes. Potatoes are literally the gift that keeps on giving; once you’ve had a harvest, chances are you’ll have potatoes every year indefinitely! The pumpkins have not shown the progress that I expected so far, but there is time yet, so I shall hold my nerve.

The warm weather followed by periods of heavy rain has however, been

marvellous for soft fruit, and I have experienced a glut of blackcurrants and redcurrants. The blackcurrants I have put in a wide-necked sealable jar with copius amounts of sugar and a bottle of budget vodka. This will make lovely Cassis liqueur in time for Christmas when I shall bottle it up for homemade gifts.

Sustainability and adapting to the change in our climate were a recurring theme at RHS Chelsea this year. On the one hand, there was a focus on ornamental and edible crops that are tolerant of drier conditions at The Garden of the Future. The garden itself

to implement innovative approaches to adapt to the changing climate. Then, a short walk away, the ADHD Foundation Garden and The Songbird Survival Garden focused on native species to the Uk, with poppies, foxgloves and irises. It was encouraging to see the wide variety of flowering plants that grow easily in British gardens used to such show-stopping effect. It certainly gave me lots of inspiration.

However, I must admit that a recurring non-native variety caught my eye. The Cornus Kousa Chinensis Var. China Girl. This is a large shrub or small tree also known as the Chinese Dogwood. It has stunning creamy-white petals in the spring, which produce a dark red

edible fruit. Later in the season, the foliage will turn a dark pink colour. This shrub was present all around the show ground, and it was stunning. So, imagine my joy when I found one going for a song at a local independent garden store! She’s a very young specimen, and she’s around 6 1/2 feet tall. I have her planted in a sheltered spot in a generously sized pot, and she is my pride and joy. I haven’t yet decided where I will plant her permanently, however, I have teamed her up with a beautiful deep red Acer as I think the shades will complement each other beautifully in the cooler months.

For the romantics amongst you, there was an awful lot of space dedicated to blousy peonies and scented roses. I am the first to admit that I am new to roses, as they always seemed to me to be quite high maintenance. However, the David Austin Queen of Sweden might have been perfection itself. The upward-facing cups begin as an apricot hue, which later turn to a romantic soft pink. The fragrance is described as “myrrh-like” which has a dreamy and relaxing quality to it. Fans of raspberry-ripple ice cream might wish to consider The Kings Rose. It was their first striped rose in the David Austin collection, and composes of white petals that are striped with raspberry sauce pink. Its scent is rosewater and red apples, and it attracts pollinators very well. It certainly made me want to hunt for an ice cream!

First look inside Hotel Indigo Leeds and the Banksia

Leeds has welcomed a new hotel to the city centre Hotel Indigo opened its doors on 15th July 2025. Located on Lower Briggate and situated in one of the oldest hotel buildings in the city, Hotel Indigo Leeds is set to bring a new stylish destination to the hospitality scene.

Just like no two neighbourhoods are alike, no two Hotel Indigos are alike, and the story of Leeds has informed every decision throughout the design of the hotel, ensuring the city is celebrated from the minute guests walk through the door.

As a city of invention, Leeds is

built upon rich industrial heritage where big ideas have always blossomed and thrived, and where ambition, innovation and imagination are never in short supply. This has been the inspiration behind the interiors which have been designed by Franklin Ellis.

The front-of-house pays tribute to the innovators who shaped Leeds’s rich history, blending pivotal moments of identity from industrial elements and refined touches that embody Leeds’s pioneering spirit.

Designed to celebrate the people and industries that cemented Leeds as a hub of innovation, the reception area evokes a vintage ambience with sepia tones, also nodding subtly to Louis Le Prince’s invention of the world’s first camera, while prestigious colour accents, influenced by the city’s tailoring heritage add a sophisticated flair.

The story of Leeds is particularly prominent in the design of the hotel rooms, with three different design themes that capture elements of the city – boardgames, textiles and film.

The first narrative is inspired by the rise and success of Leeds’s John Waddington who founded

the popular board and card game company Waddington’s in the 1920s. Guestrooms have been designed to capture the playful essence of the company’s most iconic board –Monopoly - whilst seamlessly blending with the vibrant spirit of the roaring 20s.

Inspired by the innovative legacy of Burton and Leeds’s history in the textiles industry, the second guestroom design narrative weaves together natural tones of wool with the prestige of bespoke tailoring. Offering a soft, traditional base with playful details subtly interwoven, these guestrooms celebrate the craftsmanship and creativity rooted in the region’s heritage.

The final narrative draws inspiration from the vibrant culture of Leeds, centring the design around its legacy as ‘the city that invented film’, infused with the energy of nightlife and music. The rooms feature playful, hidden details that echo the spirit of the city’s nightlife and invites guests to embark on their own ‘owl trail’ of discovery in the city.

Hotel Indigo Leeds opened its doors alongside a new Mediterraneaninspired bar and restaurant – The Banksia. Inspired by the Banksia

flower, the name and interiors symbolise rebirth and new beginnings throughout, with its colour palette bringing warm and rich tones aligned with the native wildflower. Tactile material palette, eclectic finishes, standout art pieces and lush greenery will contribute to a uniquely inspired atmosphere, helping to create a relaxed, authentic and stylish experience for hotel guests and local Leeds residents.

Continuing the botanical theme of The Banksia, the meeting rooms for the hotel follow a calmer blue palette, with dark rich timbers and brass accents.

Nina Roberts-James, associate director at Franklin Ellis, who were responsible for the interior design, commented: “Throughout the hotel, we’ve woven

the essence of Leeds into every detail. From the moment guests step through the door, they’ll experience a space that celebrates the city’s rich heritage, thoughtfully blended with modern, playful touches. Our hope is that the people of Leeds will feel a sense of pride in what we’ve created.”

Simon Grace, general manager of Hotel Indigo Leeds added “The neighbourhood story informs every decision we make in the hotel and serves as a starting point for the design in all our hotels. In Leeds, we wanted to celebrate the city’s identity and what makes locals proud, highlighting our rich industrial history along with modern nightlife and music.

Help charity Smart Works Leeds build a new home and invest in the women of Yorkshire

“There was a time not that long ago that, if you told me I would be writing this letter, I wouldn’t have believed you. Six months ago, I really didn’t have much confidence. I hadn’t worked for several decades due to being in a domestic violent relationship.

“I wanted to look for work. I had secured an interview in a coffee shop and my daughter also had an upcoming interview. Neither of us had any idea what to wear, or what to expect in an interview situation.

“When you have been in our situation, the person responsible has taken away your freedom and you just don’t know who you are anymore. I had just forgotten about myself. That’s when we both found Smart Works.”

This is an extract from a letter written by Smart Works Leeds client Rebecca (not her real name), who wants to

tell the story of her life-changing experience at the women’s employment charity - and ask for donations to help it build a new home to help more women.

Smart Works Leeds opened in November 2019, providing high quality interview clothing and advice to unemployed women across

Yorkshire. Since then, the charity has supported more than 3,000 women with its tailored dressing and coaching service. Just over 1,000 of these women have been supported in the last year alone, and more than two thirds get the job within a month of accessing the Smart Works Leeds service.

Women like Eliza, who had been out of work for over a year when Smart Works Leeds met her. She had lost her sense of direction and lacked confidence, which became increasingly debilitating with each job rejection.

A coach from Smart Works Leeds spent some time reviewing Eliza’s CV, helping her to identify transferable skills and address career gaps. When Eliza secured an interview, Smart Works Leeds offered additional support.

Eliza successfully secured a role as a teaching assistant, and now does this

alongside a marketing position for a local dance studio. She said: “I owe so much to Smart Works, they uplifted me during a really challenging time in my life. It made all the difference. The services offered by Smart Works are supportive and a huge confidence boost.”

As for Rebecca and her daughter, they both now have jobs they love, and Rebecca is working towards becoming a support worker and has started a women’s group to support other women. She said: “Smart Works gave us more than clothes. They gave us hope for a better future. We’re still in the refuge for now, but for the first time in a long time, we’re dreaming of having a place to call our own.”

Smart Works Leeds estimates that there are thousands of women like Eliza and Rebecca across Yorkshire who could also benefit from its support.

Now, as it prepares to enter a pivotal stage in its growth, Smart Works Leeds is itself looking for help and support. The charity, based in Mabgate Mills close to Leeds city centre, is hoping to move into a unit double the size of its current space. This new centre could accommodate up to 100 women a week, with four dressing and coaching rooms.

At peak times the current centre is fully booked. A new, larger centre would future proof the Smart Works Leeds service, ensuring that it can meet local needs as its referral numbers continue to increase.

The new centre would improve the accessibility of the service, with a designated quiet space. The team could host more volunteers, interns and students to support the service.

Smart Works Leeds has ambitious

plans to hold employability workshops in the new centre, where the team can offer group coaching to up to 12 women at a time. The charity also wants to launch a virtual dressing studio, so that centre staff can post clothing parcels out to women across Yorkshire who cannot access the service in person.

Finally, it hopes to overhaul its wardrobe which is currently bursting at the seams. A new, larger centre would empower Smart Works Leeds to achieve these goals and more.

You can help Smart Works Leeds to build its new home by making a contribution to its special appeal to raise £250,000.

By making a donation, you will empower Smart Works Leeds to create a space where it can support women to grow in confidence, get the job and transform their futures. You will make a tangible difference to the lives of local women, helping to provide stability for the charity as it grows its services, and aims to support more than 1,000 women a year.

To find out more about the charity or become a supporter, please see the website here: https://leeds.smartworks.org. uk or email leeds@smartworks. org.uk.

How to live a longer, healthier life starting today

Looking to live not just longer, but better? These five simple, researchsupported habits can help extend both your lifespan and your health span the years you stay strong, sharp, and energised. Here’s how to put them into action today:

1. Walk outside within 30 minutes of waking

What to do: As soon as you wake up, head outside for at least 15 minutes— ideally before breakfast. No phone, no distractions—just natural light and movement.

Why it works: Morning sunlight resets your circadian rhythm, which regulates sleep, metabolism, and hormone levels. Walking post-wake also helps manage blood sugar and reduces inflammation—both linked to ageing.

2. Eat within an 8–10-hour

What to do: Choose a daily eating window (e.g. 10am to 6pm) and stick to it. Avoid late-night snacks.

Why it works: Time-restricted eating enhances insulin sensitivity, supports gut repair, and promotes autophagy—a cellular clean-up process linked to longevity.

3. Mouth tape for better sleep

What to do: At night, apply gentle mouth tape to encourage nasal breathing (try medical tape placed vertically to keep lips closed but not sealed).

Why it works: Nasal breathing boosts nitric oxide, improves oxygen uptake, and reduces snoring. Deep, uninterrupted sleep is vital for immune function, memory, and physical repair.

4. Train your balance and reaction time 3x week

What to do: Include balance drills (like single leg stands while brushing your teeth) and reaction games (e.g. bouncing and catching a ball against a wall or using a reflex app).

Why it works: Falls are a major risk with age. Training balance and reaction sharpens your nervous system and keeps both brain and body agile.

5. Prioritise play and social connection

What to do: Schedule fun. Play games, dance, join a group, or make time for friends—at least twice a week.

Why it works: Social engagement reduces stress hormones, boosts feel-good neurotransmitters, and is linked to better cardiovascular, cognitive, and immune health.

These habits are just a few of those included in our Stealing Fire 6-week programme—a science-led, highimpact reset designed to reverse biological ageing. Just ask Debbie Shaw, who dropped a remarkable 17 years from her biological age through our method. With personalised coaching, testing, and daily implementation of hacks like these, participants leave feeling—and testing—younger, stronger, and more alive than they’ve felt in years.

Yorkshire championsdiversityhonoured at awards

Hardworking Yorkshire people, charities and social enterprises were honoured at the region’s first Pride in Diversity Awards, held on 3 July at Leeds First Direct Arena.

The awards, who’s media partner is Yorkshire Businesswoman magazine, aimed to highlight people and organisations working to champion members of the community who face additional barriers when accessing public services and employment or

simply enjoying daily life. This can be due to a range of factors, including race, neurodiversity, disability, sexuality, and gender identity.

As well as celebrating individual and team achievements, the awards aim to advance the level of funding for vital services, introduce new opportunities for collaboration, and create a more inclusive environment for everyone.

Recipients included Leeds Rhinos

legend Jamie Jones Buchanan MBE, now the team’s director of culture, diversity, and inclusion. He was awarded Public Figure of the Year.

The Yorkshire Hero Lifetime Achievement award went to Tom Riordan CBE, second permanent secretary at the Department of Health and Social Care, and Focus4Hope received Yorkshire Community

The awards were co-founded and hosted by Jane Clynes and LGBT+ ambassador Matt Jameson, who shot to fame as half of Married at First Sight’s first same sex couple. He said: "The Pride in Diversity Awards highlight that diverse communities can be united by rather than divided by our difference. That's something Yorkshire does incredibly well. It's more vital than ever to recognise and celebrate those working selflessly in our communities to uplift and remove barriers for people from diverse backgrounds. As stated by our amazing winners, it's important that we come together against the harmful rhetoric that’s so prevalent in today's media, holding each other up and showing solidarity".

Judges included broadcaster Stephanie Hirst, former Mayor of Leeds Councillor Abigail Marshall Katung, and author and presenter Jono Lancaster.

So far, the awards have raised £1,700 for chosen charity Out Together, which works to overcome the cultural and social barriers that can prevent LGBTQ+ individuals enjoying later life with dignity.

Women leading the way

In a proud celebration of Yorkshire’s thriving businesswomen, we’re delighted to share that Yorkshire Businesswoman member Zoe Hands—a familiar face in the region’s hospitality and business scene—is set to take the stage at this year’s Leeds International Festival of Ideas (LIFI) in October at Leeds Playhouse.

Zoe will be joining an inspiring panel for a session titled “Who picks up the tab for a hospitable city?”, a timely discussion that will delve into the real cost of creating welcoming, vibrant cities—who pays, who benefits, and who often goes unseen. Zoe will appear alongside the charismatic Fred Sirieix, star maitre D’ from Channel 4’s First Dates, and the head of LeedsBID Andrew Cooper, with the discussion expertly hosted by broadcaster and journalist Peg Alexander.

This dynamic panel promises to shine a light on the economic, social and emotional labour that underpins the hospitality industry, especially in a city like Leeds that is fast becoming a beacon for tourism, business, and events.

The festival itself is a brilliant platform for big ideas and bold conversations, with a star-studded line-up of speakers including Vicky McClure, Gaynor Faye, David Baddiel, and Myleene Klass. Topics range from “can mums really have it all?” to domestic violence and religion’s place in modern life, making LIFI a must-attend for anyone passionate about shaping the future of our society.

Zoe’s participation is a fitting recognition of her remarkable career and her contribution to Leeds’ hospitality scene. After 26 years at The Leeds Marriott Hotel, Zoe recently stepped into an exciting

new role as national account manager for Marriott International.

As someone who champions women in leadership and thrives on building meaningful networks, Zoe’s voice on this panel will no doubt resonate with many. She is a proud Yorkshire woman, a passionate professional, and a true role model.

Tickets for the festival are available now—don’t miss the opportunity to be part of these powerful conversations that will put Leeds firmly on the map.

The power of beauty

When two dynamic women from different professional worlds unite around a shared mission, remarkable things can happen. In the case of Dr. Lubna Khan-Salim and Victoria Clapham, that mission gave rise to This is Yorkshire Beauty—a bold platform changing the conversation around women’s health, beauty, and identity in the North.

Founded in 2023, This is Yorkshire Beauty was born from a simple but powerful idea: to create a space where women feel seen, heard, and supported without judgement or unrealistic ideals. Dr. Lubna, a former NHS plastic surgeon turned longevity expert, and Victoria, a seasoned PR and brand strategist, combined their expertise to spark a movement rooted in authenticity, community, and evidencebased wellbeing.

“There’s so much noise around women’s

health and beauty—but not enough honest, empowering dialogue,” says Dr. Lubna. “We wanted to change that.”

For Victoria, the mission was equally personal. “As a working mother, I know how hard it is to prioritise yourself,” she says. “We’re creating a space that champions visibility and connection— where women can learn, grow, and feel genuinely uplifted.”

What began as a series of intimate educational events—featuring

partners like John Lewis, The Body Shop, and Harvey Nichols—quickly gained traction. Conversations around perimenopause, ageing, aesthetics, and confidence resonated deeply with Yorkshire women, and the demand for more was immediate.

That momentum led to the launch of The BTY Club, a curated membership offering access to exclusive events, resources, and networking opportunities. It’s a growing community that proves style and substance are not mutually exclusive.

A standout milestone came in 2024, when This is Yorkshire Beauty hosted the first-ever official British Beauty Week event in Yorkshire. And in 2025, they are set to do it again—as the only official regional British Beauty Week event outside of London.

On Friday 24 October 2025, the team will return to the luxurious Grantley Hall for a full-day celebration themed “The Power of Beauty.” Guests can expect inspiring panel discussions, immersive wellbeing sessions, a curated beauty hall, and an indulgent lunch—all set in one of Yorkshire’s most iconic venues.

“Being part of British Beauty Week is about more than profile,” says Victoria. “It’s about redefining the narrative and putting regional voices on the beauty map.”

Dr. Lubna adds, “We’re proud to showcase the Yorkshire talent shaping the future of women’s health and beauty. This isn’t just an event, it’s a movement.”

Early bird tickets go live in July at www.thisisyorkshirebeauty. com. Businesses interested in partnering or sponsoring should contact hello@ thisisyorkshirebeauty.com.

The power of saying “I don’t know” in business

In a world that prizes confidence and certainty, admitting “I don’t know” can feel like a failure. Especially in business, where leaders and professionals are expected to have answers at the ready, uncertainty is often seen as a weakness.

But what if saying “I don’t know” was a sign of strength, intelligence, and leadership? After all, until we can admit what we don’t know yet, it’s virtually impossible to learn what we need to.

It’s time we got better at embracing these three simple words. Here’s why.

The cost of pretending

When businesses operate under a culture of false certainty, mistakes multiply.

Leaders make decisions based on flawed assumptions. Employees hesitate to question authority, fearing they’ll be penalised for pointing out gaps in knowledge. Innovation suffers because people are too afraid to explore uncharted territory.

So, how do we create workplaces where admitting uncertainty is not just accepted but encouraged?

1. Model It from the top

Leaders must set the example. If we openly say, “I don’t know” and follow up with curiosity and action, others will feel empowered to do the same.

2.Encourage learning over ego We need to get better at rewarding problem-solving, research, and

teamwork over simply having quick answers. Creating an environment where asking questions is valued leads to better decision-making.

3.Ask better questions

Instead of pressuring our team to have immediate solutions, get better at encouraging exploratory discussions. Questions like “What information do we need to make an informed decision?” foster a more thoughtful approach.

4.Normalise uncertainty

In fast-changing industries, no one has all the answers all the time. Acknowledging this reality helps teams adapt more effectively to new challenges.

5. Prioritise growth over perfection

Businesses that embrace a learning mindset outperform those stuck in a rigid, answer-driven culture. We need to encourage our people to seek out knowledge and experiment, rather than fearing the consequences of not knowing something.

6. The freedom in honesty

The truth is none of us has all the answers. And that’s okay! What matters is how we respond to the unknown. Instead of faking certainty, let’s embrace curiosity. Instead of fearing uncertainty, let’s see it as an opportunity for growth.

The next time you find yourself unsure, don’t scramble for an answer you don’t have. Just say it: “I don’t know – but let’s find out together.”

The unregulated UK aesthetics market

As we enter summer in the UK, many of us are planning holidays – somewhere sunny – and with this, considering our summer wardrobes, our beauty products and a treatment or two. And by this, I mean Botox or Fillers.

Globally the non-invasive aesthetics market is estimated to be worth £11.49 billion, with the UK contributing £3.2 billion, a sizeable share towards this, growing at a rate of 8.4% in 2024. There are

3 294 aesthetics clinics in the UK, who carried out 892 000 aesthetic treatments in 2024. At the same time this sector is facing significant pressure to become regulated, and to ensure that patient safety is top of mind, and ethical standards are adhered to.

Facial aesthetics include products, cosmetic implants, skin aesthetic devices, body contouring devices, physician-dispensed cosmeceutical and skin lighteners, tattoo removal devices, thread lift products, physician-dispensed eye lift

products and nail treatment devices. The UK aesthetics market continues to evolve with new products and treatments coming to market, growth is credited to advancements in technology, social media, and a growing and ageing population and consumer demand for achieving their ‘quest for perfection’ (Savage, 2021). Some of the popular treatments in the UK include Botulinum Toxin and Dermal Filler. It is estimated that the global anti-aging market will be worth $610 billion dollars in 2025. Aesthetics is now embracing anti-aging treatments beyond injectables, focusing on medical wellness and longevity, from functional medical assessments to regenerative medical programs, and IV vitamin therapy.

One of the greatest challenges in this sector is that a high percentage of cosmetic practitioners administering

injectables such as Botox are not medical doctors. The UK injectables market is predicted to reach a value of £11.7 billion by 2026, despite it being unregulated (although this is under consideration by the UK government). The British public are very trusting; however, we have seen a rise in aesthetic treatments across social media channels, fuelled by public figures and celebrities, with no clear consequences for when things go wrong. In Canada, the US, across Europe these treatments are administered by medically trained practitioners.

If you are considering treatments, ensure that those undertaking the treatments are qualified to deliver this treatment. Put safety first – before beauty – by ensuring that they are accountable to a statutory regulatory body, conduct non-surgical aesthetic treatments.

Immerse yourself in the story of the historic site with contemporary light and music showcasing its agedefining artefacts and extraordinary

exhibits. Join us to celebrate all that the museum and its gardens bring to our city and the wider north of England.

Created by the collaboration of Peter Walker, sculptor, and David Harper, composer, Luxmuralis travels the world creating stories in light and sound to audiences at locations such the Tower of London, St Paul’s Cathedral to citywide open-air projections in places like Oxford and Limburg. Luxmuralis has enchanted hundreds of thousands with their unforgettable sound and light artworks.

This is York’s turn with the show titled ‘Echoes of Yorkshire’ taking place in York Museum Gardens across ten evenings. Refreshments will be available to purchase on the night, with multiple looping art installations to enjoy with the whole event taking approximately 1 hour to experience with stunning landscape lighting. Tickets are purchased in 20 minute intervals but once in the gardens you can journey through at your own pace.  The show is suitable for all ages, making it an enjoyable event for the whole family.  The audience will experience the gardens’ history from the Roman period to its time as an Abbey, and also showcase the Yorkshire

Museum’s collections spanning 60 million years from the Jurassic, the Mesolithic, through to the Romans, Viking, Anglo Saxon and Medieval. Luxmuralis is all about fine art, light and sound reflecting closely on the history and heritage of places and weaves together the contemporary and the ancient.  The Yorkshire Museum and its gardens typifies a perfect location for such a show.

Siona Mackelworth, head of audience and programme for York Museums Trust, says: “We are delighted that Luxmuralis agreed to produce a very special and bespoke show for us here in York.  This is a celebration of all

that the Yorkshire Museum brings to the city, its history and the location as the repository of great discoveries and stories. With this amount of content, the Luxmuralis light and sound show promises to be amazing.”

Artistic director of Luxmuralis Peter Walker says: “We’re thrilled to be collaborating with the team at Yorkshire Museum to deliver a truly distinctive experience set within the stunning and historically rich Museum Gardens. By drawing inspiration from the museum’s collections, this light installation will reimagine the architecture and landscape in an entirely new and transformative way.”

Hot yoga’s year-round benefits can help you acclimatise to the heat of summer

As we officially enter the summer season, Victoria Chan Milroy and Oliver Milroy, leading yoga instructors and owners of Hotpod Yoga York, part of the UK’s largest yoga business, has explained the benefits of practicing hot yoga in a 37-degree pod, even when it’s scorching outdoors.

“It may seem counterintuitive but hot yoga is something we can do all year round. In fact, practising in the summer on a scorcher of a day, has a few extra benefits,” said Victoria and Oliver, who have been instructing at Hotpod Yoga York, which has been open on Stamford Bridge Road, Dunnington, since October 2019.

Turning up the dial on a typical yoga class and deepening the effect, Hotpod Yoga is renowned for its immersive, unintimidating experience that brings together soothing heat, dim, glowing lights with a distinct and ambient purple hue, calming beats (specially curated and licensed for the brand), and evocative scents (also made

exclusively for Hotpod Yoga), designed to relax and revitalise.

This all takes place in the cocoonlike environment of the pod: a setting that transports users a million miles away from the everyday, restoring both body and mind.

Talking about the specific benefits of practising hot yoga during the summer, co-founder and yoga instructor Nick Higgins says: “Spending time in one of our Pods helps your body acclimatise to the heat. The more you do it and the hotter it gets in the summer, the quicker your body will be able to adapt in similar conditions. That’s why Great Britain tennis star, Jack Draper, now ranked number four in the world, used the pods to help himself prepare for playing in Australia earlier this year. The exposure from the Pod will regulate your body temperature. Ultimately, sweating in the Pod will prepare you for life’s sweatier moments.”

A cardio workout, without the intensity

“While yoga is a low intensity form of exercise, the heat of the Pod will raise your body temperature. By mimicking the effects of a more intense physical activity, it increases your heart rate, providing a challenge for your cardiovascular system. More so than unheated yoga. And of course, regular cardiovascular exercise equals a healthy heart. The summer heat elevates this.”

Aid your flexibility

“The fact that it takes way less time in the heat to loosen up those muscles, is one of the amazing

benefits of hot yoga. Hot summer temperatures can prepare you further still, making even ‘warm up’ poses feel easier. Whatever it is you’re working towards, be it reaching for your elusive toes or nudging closer to those infamous splits. The summer heat, plus the pod will help you get there. Not to mention, the heat also improves range of motion, meaning happy joints.”

“Exercise is proven to increase the flow of endorphins - those feel-good hormones will have you smiling from ear to ear. You’ll emerge elated and energised. A spring in your step, ready to soak up the summer sun.”

Improve your summer sleep

Hot yoga contributes to better sleep by promoting relaxation, reducing muscle tension, and lowering stress levels through deep breathing and mindful movement....

Re-centre and refresh

“The summer months can feel busy. Especially with longer days and irresistible blue skies to organise activities under. But the busier the calendar, the more reason to set aside time to maintain your selfcare and routine practice. An hour in the pod, with the world zipped away outside, will give you the space you need to re-centre inside. Let the heat focus your mind, let the sweat melt distractions away. You’ll leave the Pod feeling like you’ve gained back time.”

Enhance your mental wellbeing

“Hot yoga contributes to better sleep by promoting relaxation, reducing muscle tension, and lowering stress levels through deep breathing and mindful movement. In the sticky summer months, it can be hard to get a good night’s sleep, but hot yoga sessions can help aiding acclimitising to heat and allowing you to head to bed in a more relaxed frame of mind.”

Dial it up, or down

“Hotpod Yoga classes are created to make the most out of the heat and the time. But you can always take classes at your own pace. You can have breaks and sips of water at any point. Your teachers will offer you variations and modifications so if the heat in summer feels a lot, you can take things down a notch.”

During the summer, Hotpod Yoga York will be offering 30 days of unlimited classes for just £30 (a single class typically costs £15) offering new customers the chance to sample the physical and mental benefits over a short period of time.

In addition, the studio is running a series of challenges enabling customers to win a range of prizes over the summer months, including membership discounts and wellbeing offers and in support of other holistic local businesses.

Toyota Review:C-HR

Smart, Stylish and surprisingly sophisticated.

As a Yorkshire Businesswoman constantly balancing packed schedules, client meetings, events and a granddaughter too, I needed a car that was equal parts practical and personality packed, and after driving the 2025 Toyota C-HR for the past couple of days, I can honestly say that this car fits the brief better than I expected!

My first impression was the car’s bold design, it’s coupe-like silhouette, LED lights and funky looking exterior gave it a premium edge. Although my car was in a block colour, these cars do come in new two-tone paint options,

so I imagine a real head turner in corporate car parks or shopping centres, and speaking of car parks, the car was compact enough to slip into the tightest of parking spaces of such.

The interior was very well designed, I would describe as minimalist understated luxury! A digital cockpit, with a large central touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay so very easy to manage my calls and sat nav too. The seats were supportive with easy to control adjustment. The interior was of good size with plenty of space for my laptop bag and shopping bags, with the centre console large enough to hold my handbag neatly out of sight.

Regarding performance, I am used to driving a sports car, so I didn’t expect the sports car thrills, however, I was very pleasantly surprised with this drive, my first experience of a hybrid motor and I can confidently say that it was so smooth, silent, very efficient and it handled so well in traffic!

As a lady who’s very often multitasking (hands-free, of course!) Safety is very important and with the lane-keep assist, cruise control and blind spot monitoring I always felt extremely safe whilst driving this vehicle.

So, my final thoughts – the Toyota C-HR is thoughtfully designed for woman like me, driven, dynamic and non-stop - always on the move!

Would I recommend this car to another professional businesswoman? Absolutely! It’s stylish, practical and efficient, it’s polished, ready and reliable - just like we are!!

Worth also noting is my experience whilst collecting and returning the vehicle to Vantage Motor Group in Leeds. The team were very professional and efficient, I arrived and was immediately made to feel welcome with a fabulous meet and greet and the offer of a drink. I completed all paperwork at ease and had a lovely chat with Zac who

made every effort to pop across to say hello. I was shown every possible function of the car from opening the doors to operating the sat nav/music system etc.

Upon return, again, I was greeted promptly and very professionally and with the offer of a drive back into the City Centre which I kindly accepted.

Acres of charm in Emley you couldn’t ask for moor.

Entrepreneur School Speakers founder, and Finalist BBC1 The Apprentice, Claire Young on why Sundays at Three Acres, will always stand the test of time.

Regarded with great fondness by regulars – some may say it’s an institution - Three Acres is on Emley Moor, next to the iconic mast.

Not only are the views stunning, Yorkshire countryside at its best, inside the inn you are greeted with its new beautiful interiors.

What makes the Three Acres special is the people who work there. They create a wonderful atmosphere, for me it almost feels like bumping into an old friend – you instantly feel comfortable and at ease. General manager Terry Mackinder has been welcoming guests for 26 years! His daughter Emily - who served my Mum and I - is part of the team too.

In April 2023, the venue closed while the owners, the Truelove family, had a new kitchen fitted. However, later that year on Boxing Day, a faulty tumble dryer meant it was destroyed by fire. It was utterly heartbreaking after all their hard work, thankfully now fully reopened and restored to its former glory. In my opinion it is ever better than before!

If you’re a fan of the classic Sunday roast, you’ll be delighted at the Three Acres. My roast sirloin of beef was truly mouthwatering, enhanced by accompaniments of Pickering watercress, fresh radish, and a zingy horseradish sauce. Roasts also feature Yorkshire pudding, duck fat roast potatoes, honey glazed parsnips and carrots, buttered cabbage, and roast gravy. Mum opted for a locally reared pork and crackling accompanied by chipolatas, sage and onion stuffing, traditional mustard sauce and a homemade apple sauce.

Our desserts were equally sublime, with chocolate cremeux for me, accompanied by sea salt caramel ice cream, and a cheese board for mum, brought out with crackers, grapes and truffled honey.

The food is delicious, quality local ingredients and cooked perfectly. We left empty plates which is always the best sign of a great meal.

The final - and very stylish - touch was an espresso martini. Their cocktail and wine selection are impressive to say the least.

The service was 5-star throughout the meal, and attentive without being suffocating.

The 3 Acres is iconic. But it isn’t snooty. It’s welcoming, family friendly, and priced accordingly, including a set menu option.

I’d wholeheartedly recommend it as a great place to meet with family, friends, and colleagues. And if you overindulge in the restaurant, there are guest rooms making your visit extra perfect.

William Kentridge’s “The Pull of Gravity” opens at Yorkshire Sculpture Park

A major new exhibition by renowned South African artist William Kentridge, titled The Pull of Gravity, has opened at Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP).

Running until April 19, 2026, this is the first museum presentation outside South Africa to focus on Kentridge’s sculpture, making it a landmark cultural event for Yorkshire and the UK.

Bringing together over 40 works made between 2007 and 2024, this significant project is a carefully choreographed and multi-sensory

journey into Kentridge’s world. Paper Procession, displayed outdoors, is a commission created for YSP of six monumental, colourful sculptures that parade in front of a century-old yew hedge. Joining this new work are four of the artist’s largest bronzes to date, displayed against far-reaching views over the Yorkshire landscape.

The Pull of Gravity presents an extensive body of sculpture across a range of scales and materials, including bronze, steel, aluminium, paper, cardboard, plaster, wood, and found objects. In addition, the exhibition features the first institutional presentation of Self-Portrait as a Coffee Pot. This series of short films was embarked upon during the first Covid-19 lockdown and allows audiences an intimate insight into the life of Kentridge’s studio, the workings of his mind, and the energy and agency of making. In the central gallery space, two films – More Sweetly Play the Dance and Oh To Believe In Another

World – are shown on a loop in an immersive installation across seven screens. Spanning over 20 metres, they wrap around the viewers, surrounding them with music and movement.

YSP’s exhibition spaces are fully accessible, with resources such as large print and Braille interpretation, coloured transparencies, and ear defenders available for visitors. Families are encouraged to engage with activities in The Studio creative space, including drawing and making sessions inspired by Kentridge’s playful approach to art.

Whether you’re an art lover, a family looking for an inspiring day out, or simply curious about contemporary sculpture, The Pull of Gravity offers a unique opportunity to experience the work of one of the world’s leading artists right here in Yorkshire. The exhibition invites visitors to reflect, explore, and even imagine themselves as artists - an experience not to be missed this summer and kids go free.
