Roman general and statesman. Historians in the 1800’s believed Caesar constructed a fort on Holwood Hill during a Roman cross channel campaign circa 55BC. The site is now known as Caesars Camp.

The youngest ever British Prime Minister and owner of Holwood from 1785 to 1803. Instrumental in the abolition of slavery with William Wilberforce.

Charles Darwin

British politician, campaigner and philanthropist. At the foot of an Oak tree in Holwood he made the decision to bring forth the abolition of the slave trade, leading to the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833.

Holwood and surrounding environments proved rich sources of research material for Darwin’s theories of evolution by natural selection, transforming the way we think about the natural world.

A British statesman who served as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. Known as Lord Stanley, his family were one of the richest landowning families in England. Holwood remained in the Stanley family for 80 years.

The twentieth century’s most celebrated and famous British Prime Minister. A confidant of Lady Stanley he would regularly dine at Holwood House.
