WARRIOR MENTALITY We all have things in our past that could have defeated us. Maybe it’s a financial setback, a relationship that didn’t work out, a friend who did us wrong, or the loss of a business. It should have taken you down, but there you are – still standing! That setback should have taken you out, but you have a warrior mentality. You’re still standing, still in the fight, becoming stronger. Maybe the loss was so big you thought your best days were over, but here you are today, still standing. When you go through setbacks, it’s a chance to see light in the darkness, goodness in the bad that happens. When your mind is focused on seeing everything that transpires as a positive, you don’t get discouraged by difficulties. You don’t fall apart because of a disappointment. You know that you’ve come through tough things before, and you’re going to get through this setback, too.

You learn to appreciate the challenges; they make you focus on your achievements. You learn to embrace the setbacks, they make you stronger. You learn to welcome competition, it makes you better. You learn to appreciate those who wrong you, they teach you to forgive. You fear nothing, you live with faith. You don't let failure take your dreams; you dream new dreams, bolder ones. And you keep on going. That’s a warrior. That’s you. Still standing.

HOW TO

by Alan Dooley

STASH $5,000 AWAY IN 2015!

Since 2012, US consumers have collectively acquired more than $73 billion in new credit card debt. With only 2 in 5 adults keeping a budget and a ‘buy now pay later’ attitude, it’s no big surprise. With a lack of personal financial education, bad habits can develop easily as demonstrated by the 19% of Americans who insist on spending more than they make, and the full 60% who don’t have a rainy day fund. It’s not that hard to save $5,000. You can do it in 2015 by using good financial habits. Biz offers the following tips to get you on the right track:

Never buy something unless you have a way to pay for it. Either have the cash on

hand or use the desire to motivate you to find a way to earn more. Otherwise, get by without it. Delayed gratification is a powerful tool.

Use online savings accounts vs. checking accounts if possible. They offer

interest rates up to 36% higher.

Cut back on unnecessary expenses. A daily $6 cappuccino is $1,560 a year; if you can you get by with basic cable vs premium, you could save another $1,200.

Buy used. We all know new cars depreciate

agazine.

Learn to live on 70-80% of your net pay. Save 10% and use the balance to pay off

debts and enjoy life. If you can save to a 401(k) or IRA with an employer match, even better. Use automatic savings deductions. Be vigilant.

Open a Health Savings Account (HSA).

You can contribute to it tax free, role over the balance each year and use the tax free gains to pay medical expenses, even over the counter drugs. Many business owners are opting for High Deductible Health Plans paired with an HSA to manage insurance costs and provide competitive health benefits to attract and retain skilled workers. This tip alone could save a company thousands. u

deal can be found for a 2 year old model, which could save you 5 grand right there. Pawn shops offer more than just jewelry, so look for that drill, kid’s winter coat or fitness equipment. Check out thrift stores and consignment shops too.

All Savings Accounts Are NOT Created Equal: WalletHub tracks more than 2,000 banks that offer checking and savings accounts to general consumers, small business owners and students. They discovered that:

• National banks charge

the highest fees and offer the fewest features on checking accounts, as opposed to credit unions who are 72% cheaper, offer 120% more features and provide 567% higher interest rates.

• Online accounts are 23%

cheaper than branch accounts, have 49% more features and provide a 94% higher average interest rate.

• Business accounts are

102% more expensive than personal online accounts, have 43% less features and provide a 76% lower average interest rate.

• Student accounts are

55% cheaper than the average personal online account at the expense of just 3% less features.

BRAVEHEART

Film Writer RANDALL WALLACE: FIGHT FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN

Oscar-nominated writer and producer Randall Wallace was in Sioux Falls recently. His movies include: BRAVEHEART, Pearl Harbor, Secretariat, The Man in the Iron Mask, and his films have earned more than $1 billion dollars at the box office. His new book, LIVING THE BRAVEHEART LIFE is due for release in early 2015. Here he talks with BizNOW about writing the stories that make his heart soar.

10 | BizNOWmagazine.com | December 2014

Well, my grandfather was a self-made man. He built a store by salvaging wood from a wrecked riverboat, and managed to eke out a living during the depression through sheer grit. And I love that story, because that story told me who I was supposed to be. And that’s what I wanted to do with my life -- I wanted to be able to tell the kind of stories that would inspire people. At the height of my career, I lived in California, had a beautiful house and 2 incredible sons and German cars in the driveway and it was great. And every year my salary doubled. Then, the bottom fell out. The Writers' Guild had gone on strike, and the company I'd been working for was hit hard. The strike went on forever, and when it was over the company was barely there anymore. I was out of work, my savings were gone. No one would return my phone calls. I was ready to give up. That night I said a prayer. And I realized I wasn’t praying for money or things, I was praying for God to give me strength,

the courage to continue fighting for my dreams. And I remember praying, "But if I go down, let me go down not on my knees, but with my flag flying because I’m fighting for what I believe in.” I didn’t hear a choir of angels but I got up and it was then that I started to write the script for BRAVEHEART, the story of fighting for freedom on the battlefield in Scotland.

What motivated Mel Gibson to do the movie?

When I wrote BRAVEHEART, I was completely unknown. My agent called one day, he said Mel Gibson had seen the script, and he wanted to meet me! Sometimes when you get a movie star in a room, everybody around is so taken with that celebrity; they try to say anything they think he wants to hear. I couldn’t do that. Five minutes into the meeting, I was leaning over the table across from Mel, beating on it with my fist, relaying the movie’s message. I said, “My movie says, if you’re faithful to your heart, even if they cut it out of you, you’ve lived a life with meaning, you haven’t died in vain. So if you want to make that movie, then I’m your man. If you don’t, say no, life’s too short.” Everyone around that table just stared at me, their jaws dropped open. Later my agent called and said “What did you say?” I said, “Well, no one else was saying anything, so I just told them what I thought. I’m sorry.” And my agent says “Sorry??? The chairman of the studio just called and said Mel wants to do the movie!”

And I remember praying, "But if I go down, let me go down not on my knees, but with my flag flying because I’m fighting for what I believe in.”

What inspired you to write BRAVEHEART?

BIZ Interview (cont.)

RANDALL WALLACE:

FIGHT FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN Tell us about filming BRAVEHEART and working with Mel Gibson. While filming BRAVEHEART in

Ireland, we had 7 cameras rolling and 2,500 Irishmen dressed up as Scottish warriors. Now I don’t know how many Irishmen you know but if you put two of them together, you got a fight or a party or both, and they were whacking each other with rubber weapons, laughing and joking.

How has faith guided your career? Faith has been a

constant throughout my career. Mel saw the Biblical parallels in BRAVEHEART the moment he read the script, so we immediately shared the same orientation on how best to tell the story. He understood every nuance, and that's an amazing gift for a writer to find in an actor because it's exceedingly rare.

And it was then that Mel Gibson came riding out on a horse with his face painted blue, and suddenly he wasn’t Mel Gibson anymore. All 2,500 Irishmen gasped and it was no longer Ireland, we were back in time, on the battlefield in Scotland. Mel was saying, “You may fight and you may die. Run and you’ll live, at least while…This is our one chance to come back and tell our enemies they may take our lives, but they’ll never take our freedom!” And all 2,500 warriors erupted in thunderous cheering!

the sense that folks there are measured by their principles, by their character, by what they stand for.

Why do you think BRAVEHEART has endured for 20 years and become such an icon, inspiring generation after generation? I think it's because

lately, your last job, but I think it's important to keep an eye on the direction of your career. My mentor, the great Thomas Langford, a Dean at Duke University, once said that no decision in our lives stands alone; the trajectory of all the other decisions we’ve ever made points our direction for the future.

BRAVEHEART speaks to a man's recognition of the power of courage and commitment and a woman's longing for real love.

You were in Sioux Falls recently. What do you like about the heartland? I was instantly impressed by

What have you learned from a lifetime in Hollywood? The business focuses on what you've done

How do you get your ideas? A story has to speak to me, or I can't write it. It has to cut me to the core. I'm inspired by those things that someone would be willing to die to defend. Upon writing BRAVEHEART, I determined I would write the stories that inspired me, that made my heart soar. u

ON MY BIG BOY CHRISTMAS LIST:

THE NEW ROBOT

To: M Merry att Chris tmas

I love Christmas, there is no more exciting time of the year for a geek like me. What cool gadget or toy can I get my family to buy me this year?

funded project called Jibo. Jibo was invented by MIT professor and social robotics pioneer Dr. Cynthia Breazeal. She calls it, “the first family robot.” To me, it looks a little like a desk lamp, with a slightly cone-shaped middle and a round head with a giant eye, and it’s less than a foot tall. The face is a screen that allows interaction.

For the past few months I have been walking around the house singing “All I want for Christmas is a new robot.” After about a week my wife said, “Enough with your version of Christmas music, we all know you want a robot.” But as a Geek, I’m thinking, who wouldn’t want their own Rosie for Christmas, most of us grew up watching that cartoon family of the future -- the Jetsons – rely on Rosie their robot to cook, clean and watch little Elroy. About the only thing she didn’t do was walk Astro. Now, thanks to the birth of the smart phone I just might get my robot after all: enter Jibo.

Let me tell you as I watched the Kickstarter video about how this thing works, it was amazing. Now I no longer would have to take the photos at family dinners – Jibo will do it – and I can actually be in them! Jibo could read my kids a story, act as a watch dog, my wife can cook while Jibo reads the recipe to her! Plus it can text, email, and deliver voice messages based on facial recognition – so if it sees me, it will say, Hey Matt, here are your messages, and the same with the wife and kids.

You see a couple months back I stumbled on a great Kickstarter-

Move over, Jetsons. Jibo’s here. u

At last check, 4800 units have been pre-sold on Kickstarter, and I can tell you, I hope my wife was one of them! Check out Jibo at http://www.myjibo.com and you too may add him to your Christmas list. I think Jibo has the potential to be one of the coolest things in 2015.

FIGHTING FOR CLEAN ENERGY:

THE POWER OF POET As an industry, ethanol contributes 400,000 direct and indirect jobs across the country and saves consumers anywhere from $.50 to $1.50 at the pump, according to independent analysis. A study by South Dakota State University claims ethanol production has added over $3.8 billion in economic impact and provides demand for over 350 million bushels of corn per year in South Dakota alone.

Jeff Broin

POET's Founder

“Through each hurdle, something told me that we had to do it. I really felt strongly in my heart that what we were doing was right regardless of the cost and the risk. I always had faith.”

Founded by Jeff Broin in 1983, POET now operates a network of 27 ethanol production facilities across seven states. Nearly 25 years later, the once small-scale operation on a family farm has grown into one of the world’s largest ethanol producers.

- Jeff Broin

Today, the original family farm site in Scotland remains POET’s premier state-of-the-art research center and also serves as the pilot plant for cellulosic ethanol production, which uses corn cobs, leaves and husk to produce ethanol as opposed to corn starch. “When the ethanol industry got on its first shaky feet decades ago, it was the focused and frugal approach on the Broin family

16 | BizNOWmagazine.com | December 2014

farm that proved on a micro-scale what this industry could be,” said Jeff Lautt, POET’s current President and CEO. “Broin Enterprises introduced creative thinking and new efficiency to the endeavor.” POET continues to spearhead technological breakthroughs such as cutting water use in half and through the introduction of BPX, a biotechnology that removes cooking from the ethanol production process, saving both energy and costs.

In 2009, the pilot plant in Scotland produced nearly 20,000 gallons of cellulosic ethanol from crop residue in its first full year of operation, laying the groundwork for significant cost reductions. The next step would be developing this technology on a commercial scale. “I had a really strong feeling that this was something we had to delve into to see if there was an opportunity there,” said Broin. “So we started moving forward, we started knocking

down the hurdles, we kept knocking on the doors to see if they would open – and they kept opening, and we kept moving forward.” For example, POET originally announced that Project LIBERTY would use corn cobs as the feedstock, but storage and transportation issues forced POET to look elsewhere. Two years later, a bale-based method was designed and changed the course of Project LIBERTY. When Sushi Project LIBERTY was inaugurated this fall, several dignitaries were in attendance, including His Majesty King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands.

SLEEP Deprived?

! Want to slim your waistline? Sleep more!

A good night’s sleep is

8 hours a night,

yet 30% of Americans sleep less than 6 hours a night. And that can not only make you cranky, but it can crank up the weight gain too!

The struggle to get a good night’s sleep can be frustrating, so here are a few tips that Biz found to help you relax and fall asleep more quickly: 1. T he 7-second trick– Try curling

your toes for seven seconds, then release. Use this 7-second trick on every muscle, working your way upward towards your neck – if you can make it that far! Or try this technique: inhale as you count to 7, hold it for a count of 7, and exhale slowly for a count of 7. Repeat until you fall asleep.

2. Eat bedtime snacks that make you drowsy– Try a light snack that promotes sleep. Put a tryptophan-containing food with carbohydrates, it can calm your brain and help you sleep. Snacks to try: a turkey sandwich, a small bowl of whole-grain cereal, a banana, or granola with low-fat yogurt.

3. T urn off the TV, cell phone, and computer. The light from these devices can suppress melatonin production, and even stimulate the mind. Instead, try

18 | BizNOWmagazine.com | December 2014

listening to soft music or an audio book, or try yoga.

4. Change your bright lights to lowwattage bulbs. Avoid the bright lights

before bed. Cover electrical displays, block light from windows. Try a sleep mask over your eyes.

5. Take a flashlight to the bathroom at night. If you wake up to use the bathroom at night, use a flashlight to get you there. Keeping light to a minimum makes it easier to get back to sleep.

6. Postpone worrying. If you wake up

during the night and feel anxious about something, just write it on a Post-it and put off worrying about it until the next morning. You’ll be able to deal with it better when you’re fresh. u

A study cited in the American Journal of Epidemiology following 70,000 women over 16 years showed that those who didn’t get enough sleep at night (less than 5 hours) were 30% more likely to GAIN 30 POUNDS than those who slept a full night. Just one more reason to get a good night’s sleep.

THE FUTURE LOOKS

SO MUCH BRIGHTER ABOVE GROUND + At POET, we’re turning traditional ideas about energy production on their head. We combine human ingenuity with nature’s miracle of growth to produce efficient biofuels, foods, feeds and renewable alternatives to petrochemicals.

Opportunity is everywhere, if you know where to look. poet.com

YOU SIGN THE LEASE

A GUIDE TO SELECTING THE PERFECT OFFICE LOCATION Are you ready to move your business from your home to a professional office location? Have you outgrown your present office space? Is your lease up for renewal? No matter what phase your business is in, there are many important factors to consider when it comes to selecting the location to best suit your business’ needs. Before making that move or renewing your lease, here are some items to consider:

Square Footage and Floor Plan. How many offices do you need and what size? Will there be adequate space for inventory or added staff as you grow? Perhaps there is adjacent space you can obtain a ‘first right of refusal’ on. Can you share a conference room or do you require an in-suite conference room? Common area restrooms vs. private? Location and Neighbors. Can your clients easily find you? Will your business benefit from being near a complimentary type of business or in a certain area of the city? Attorneys like to be near the courts and medical near hospitals, pharmacies and/or public transportation. Can you negotiate to prevent a competing business from sharing the same building, or will you thrive from being close to your competitors? Signage. Do you require prominent signage or is a listing in the building directory adequate? Parking. Ensure it is well-lit and safe. Is there additional cost for reserved parking? Can customers and employees easily enter and exit the parking area, and are there enough

spaces for everyone including handicap spaces? Will parking be shared with a retail tenant who has heavy customer use?

Image. Do the building and common areas project the image you want for your business? Will the landlord provide a tenant finish allowance so you can update or construct a floor plan to meet your needs? Is the property professionally managed to ensure maintenance issues are handled promptly? Negotiating the Lease. Lease agreements cover a myriad

of subjects, thus it is imperative you clearly understand all the terms of the lease and not overlook items which can reduce your risk and/or benefit your business. Does the rate include utilities and maintenance fees? Lease rates for professional space vary widely depending on location, finishes, amenities, etc. You can often negotiate a modest annual increase or contract for a longer term to maintain rate stability. Your renewal period also presents a great opportunity to negotiate new terms and perhaps updates to your space. Just as you are an expert in your business, it usually pays to hire a commercial real estate agent when leasing space. They not only know the available inventory, but can help negotiate terms that best fit your needs. In most cases the landlord will pay the fees due the agent, and properly negotiated lease terms will always pay for themselves during the life of the lease. u

FIGHTING TO WIN: 7 WAYS TO MAKE A GOOD IMPRESSION IN COURT

22 | BizNOWmagazine.com | December 2014

BIZ Legal Whether you’re in court for a traffic ticket or you’re fighting a huge lawsuit, you can increase your odds of winning your case by simply making a good impression. Here are some tips that can help: 1. D ress up. Even if you love jeans and T-shirts, it’s not the

right attire for court. While you don’t have to wear a suit, you do want to appear professional. Avoid flashy clothes and odd styles. Research has been done on how judges and juries are influenced, and style and color of clothing are some of those factors. Avoid wild patterns and very bright colors. Black or gray dress pants and a white shirt for guys; for women, something professional and somewhat conservative is always appropriate. Go for plain colors and clothes, play it safe.

2. Be polite. Address the judge as “Your Honor”. When

asked a question, say yes or no, don’t say “yeah” and don’t go into long explanations. Be clear, concise, and try to relax. Look at the judge, make eye contact. Avoid being argumentative.

3. Tone of voice. Soft voices are often associated with

nervousness and shyness, so practice speaking up. For impact, try varying the tone of your voice as you emphasize key parts of your testimony. Be composed, but serious. If you hear something you don’t like, keep your composure. If you don’t agree with something, just say, “That is not what happened, Your Honor,” and then explain. It can be tough to sit back while your opponent makes arguments or false accusations. But don’t interrupt, you’ll get a chance to tell your side of the story.

4. Body language. It’s a good idea to move your hands

when you speak. Studies show that nerve connections exist between the hands and the brain, so unconsciously your hands can reveal your attitude about what you’re talking about. To show honesty, hold palms facing up. It conveys, “I’m telling the truth, you can trust my testimony.”

5. Be prepared. No matter why you’re there, always

do your homework. Think through your responses beforehand, anticipate likely questions and practice your responses so you are comfortable. Learn the elements of your case. Make sure your evidence is admissible.

6. Put together a trial notebook. To keep track of

questions you want to ask and the points you want to make in your case, and facts you have to prove to win the case, it can help to put together a notebook. It will keep you focused and you’ll be able to remember your key points.

7. Tell the truth. If you don’t, sooner or later it catches up

with you, and judges and attorneys have built-in radar to ferret out inaccurate statements via witness testimony and expert evidence. The most important asset you have in court is your integrity and credibility. Tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. u

A HEALTHIER YOU: We’d all like to have a magic pill that makes us look and feel younger. Yet the real secret is healthier living. Dean Aguiling, MD, Internal Medicine Specialist with Avera Medical Group Internal Medicine, says obesity is a key reason for feeling old before your time. It makes people more prone to the onset of diabetes, heart attack, stroke, arthritis or joint pain.

5 STEPS TO LOOKING AND FEELING YOUNG!

Maintaining a healthy weight goes hand in hand with his top two tips for looking and feeling young: A healthy diet and exercise. “It’s a matter of caloric intake. Anything you take in that’s more than what you burn off is just going to stay there,” he said.

Eat a healthy diet Each individual needs a given range of calories per day, depending on your age, weight and activity level. Use those calories to your best advantage.

Dean Aguiling, MD, Internal Medicine Specialist with Avera Medical Group Internal Medicine

“There are a lot of diets out there, but these are some general principles for healthy eating,” Dr. Aguiling said: Plenty of fruits and vegetables; complex carbohydrates found in whole grains; lean meats and protein foods; dairy products like skim milk; limited sugar intake; and healthy fats rather than trans fats or saturated fats. Avoid high-sugar drinks like soda. Instead, choose water, and drink at least eight cups each day. If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation (no more than one drink per day for women; two drinks per day for men).

Exercise

24 | BizNOWmagazine.com | December 2014

“There’s no need for a prescription for exercise, yet moving from the couch to the treadmill is a hard transition,” Dr. Aguiling said. Make sure you have an exercise plan that will help you avoid injuries. Be aware that exercise can trigger existing conditions like heart problems or asthma, so check with your doctor.

sharonf@aceshr.com • www.aceshr.com

The only controllable cost you have is work comp. Let us help you MAKE money on your work comp and related business insurance.

Recommendations call for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise, like walking or biking, per week, or 75 minutes of more vigorous exercise.

Don’t smoke “There’s a myriad of risks involved with smoking,” Dr. Aguiling said, including heart attack, lung cancer, emphysema or COPD, blood clots, and more. “All these can push you toward an earlier death,” he said.

Business solutions:

Smoking takes a toll on your energy level and lung capacity. It also speeds up the aging process of the skin, i.e., sags and wrinkles.

Take care of your skin

- Preventing and Managing Injury - Business Insurance - Hire Right Greg Tate, CWCA

There is no such thing as a “healthy tan.” Sun exposure and tanning beds not only can lead to skin cancer, but also wrinkles and other signs of aging. Wear a daily sunscreen on your face. Before going out in the sun, wear protective clothing and apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before exposure, and reapply every two hours. Dry skin is another hazard in this area of the country. Instead of looking young and smooth, dry skin looks cracked, rough and reddened. Protect your skin in the winter with moisturizers. Avoid excessive washing, use low pH cleansers, and consider running a humidifier in your home.

Get plenty of sleep Nothing can make you feel down and tired more than not getting enough sleep. Adults should get at least seven to eight hours of good sleep a night. If you don’t feel rested, ask your doctor. You could be suffering from a sleep disorder, like sleep apnea or insomnia. BOOK REVIEW

by Melissa Johnson

The Carpenter is the latest book by bestselling author Jon Gordon (The Energy Bus: 10 Rules to Fuel Your Life) which delivers a message of service, care and craftsmanship in a time where our world is shouting noisily about checking things off a list, and blazing through things faster and cheaper. Building success is not about working faster and building bigger, it’s about creating a masterpiece and putting love into your work. Business-owner Michael is on stress overload about the growing pains his company is facing. After a health crisis and resulting forced slowdown, Michael meets a quiet character full of wisdom known as The Carpenter, who teaches him about the art of creating a masterpiece. Michael learns from The Carpenter that a fast track to success does not mean satisfaction in his soul, and the Carpenter teaches him valuable principles about creating things of worth, showing care for your work and your life by serving those around you. It’s a quick read. Be prepared to highlight as you discover many key takeaways for your business. Michael learns that fast success does not satisfy his soul, he also learns that roadblocks do not necessarily equal stopping points. Michael runs into setbacks along the way which challenge his beliefs as he’s attempting to adapt to a new way of thinking.

At Carpenter11.com you’ll find resources to help expand your learning, and an Action Plan to adopt these concepts into your life.

The Carpenter will challenge you to think of failure as a pathway to success, and to “talk to yourself” instead of “listening to yourself.” This book focuses on putting love into action and invites you to consider your work as art worth doing with love. As a business owner myself, I’ve found The Carpenter to be a great book to share with my team. u

BIZ Spiritual

Biz Spiritual Series:

COURAGE THE MOST ESSENTIAL VIRTUE IN BUSINESS

Aristotle called courage the first virtue, because it makes all of the other virtues possible. It isn’t just an important virtue in our personal transactions, but it’s significant in business as well. While there are other important business traits – leadership, creativity and innovation, negotiation and sales – they fade in the absence of courage. Leadership often involves making tough and unpopular decisions. That takes courage. Creativity and innovation are all about defying convention and tradition. That also takes courage. Negotiation and sales have a lot of rejection inherent, day after day. And that takes courage. Without courage, the strengths of leadership, creativity and negotiation all lose their power. The good news is, courage is a learnable skill. We all have the capacity to be more courageous, in every moment. It’s about taking action – sometimes just one small step when you know something is right. It’s about making the tough decisions – sometimes to

let go of a business outcome or a relationship you know you need to. It’s about letting go of control – having the confidence to trust your team – having faith in those around you. It’s about being open to new possibilities, directions and change. And it’s about speaking up when that silent voice whispers to you to do so; in the very small things as well as the life-changing moments. Doing nothing is easy; it’s an invisible mistake, yet inaction takes down empires. Courage isn’t about being fearless; it’s just about taking action even when you feel the fear. The difference between courage and fear is often a split second. And that’s the difference between ordinary men and heroes. u
