elcome to our issue dedicated to the heroes in health care. We have some great stories from health care related organizations who have made a significant impact on our community. We will also be celebrating some amazing professionals on Nov. 2 at our Inaugural Health Care Heroes event — made possible by all our sponsors who saw the value in an awards program such as this. And finally, we have a special portion of this issue dedicated to the finalists who are up for the awards.

As I contemplated what these heroes have done to get to this place in their careers, I thought of my oldest

brother, Tony Cayton.

Tony is a great example of a health care hero in my book. When Tony was already 30 plus years in a career involving wireless communications and electronics, he decided to pursue his passion for health care.

He had developed this love as a volunteer EMT in his early twenties.

Tony was 50 years old when he decided to go back to school and pursue becoming a PA. After a few closed doors, he was able to get into a PA School in Tennessee called Bethel University. By the time Tony graduated PA school, he was 55 years old.

Today, Tony is serving as a PA on

a Native American reservation out west. I am extremely proud of the way he has pursued his call to the health care industry.

Even through the hardships of the pandemic and his own open heart surgery and full recovery, he has stood strong and committed to his calling. I dedicate this issue to my health care hero, my brother- Tony Cayton!

he Breast Care Center at Cape Fear Valley Health has recently been re-accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) through the American College of Surgeons.

“In our survey, we were compliant in 100 percent of the standards,” said Medical Director for the Cape Fear Valley Breast Center Elizabeth Sawyer, MD, FACS in a press release. “We are very proud to maintain this important accreditation, which is a testament to the excellent care provided by all of the staff in our breast cancer program.

Physician’s Assistant program, their tremendous programs in nursing and therapies,” shared CFVH CEO Mike Nagowski. “That and our geography, Cape Fear Valley in this region has more than 80 different sites of care, eight hospitals, over 1,000 physicians who are ready to become faculty, 2,000 nurses to assist, it really was the right combination between our organizations and we’re very proud to be partnering with Methodist to do this medical school and to build it on the campus of Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.”

The project, expected to cost around $120 million in total, has been in the works since 2019.

“It started with a series of conversations between Cape Fear and Methodist University until we got to the point where it was clear that this was viable, that it was clearly something good for both organizations and obviously tremendously good for the community as a whole,” shared Methodist University President Dr. Stanley T. Wearden.

The new medical school will provide students with the opportunity to work alongside experienced faculty and health care professionals, gaining valuable real-world experience that will prepare them for their future careers.

After receiving the green light, Wearden shared the next step: informing the faculty and staff of this new addition to the University. According to Wearden, the MU staff were informed of the medical school on the same day it was announced to the rest of the community on Feb. 27.

“In a university, faculty are very much involved in the hiring of Deans and the hiring of new faculty and that sort of thing. We have a process where we have search committees and [while] all the faculty don’t have the final vote, we really want and value their input,” shared Wearden.

Dr. Bell shared he was approached by Nagowski to head the new school as the two had worked together almost 20 years earlier in 2000. Pioneering this new position, Bell became a primary development leader in the planning and was tasked with not only overseeing that the school received proper accreditation, but also developing the curriculum.

“Our curriculum is going to be unique; it's going to be a socially accountable community engaged curriculum. And what that means is, our students will be learning medicine in the context of the needs of southeastern North Carolina,” shared Bell. “We’re going to do it through a socially accountable community engaged curriculum. We’re going to work with our community partners to really address the needs of this region. Our students will have required community service as part of their medical education.

They’re going to learn about what the issues are facing the population in this region, and they’re going to address them.”

The development of the curriculum is crucial to moving forward with the project. Bell is currently overseeing the accreditation process of the SOM. Methodist University is currently an applicant program for the Liaison Commission on Medical Education (LCME) and will also submit a substantive change prospectus to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) for approval.

Methodist University Provost Dr. Suzanne Blum Malley has been involved in seeking accreditation and shared that while the process has begun for both regional and national approval, both will take a while to finalize.

“We’ve made ourselves very aware of the processes we have to go through. SACSCOC accredits the University, but when we bring on a new program that is more than 50 percent new, we have to go through a process called ‘substantive change’ and when the curriculum is approved by us, we send it to them,” shared Blum Malley.

She also added that when the physical building is complete, the SACSCOC will send representatives to tour the facility to approve it as well since it will be located off of the MU campus.

“We’re following all of the processes for that LCME accreditation of the medical education program that started in February when we announced this partnership and

this plan. Prior to making that announcement, we had to submit a letter to the LCME declaring our intent to do this and they then gave us what’s called ‘applicant status.’

The LCME accreditation process will take us through 2031,” added Blum Malley.

MU health students will be able to add on to their educational experience with the new SOM. Current offerings for hands-on training include a simulation lab, which allows students to work with robot patients powered by artificial intelligence.

Methodist University plans to begin recruiting students in July 2025 and begin classes in July 2026 and graduate its first class from the SOM in spring of 2031, pending approval by the LCME and SACSCOC. Nagowski shared that the physical building for the school will be located on the Cape Fear Valley Campus on Village and Owen Drive in Fayetteville. The SOM will be joining the campus which has the main hospital building and a Center for Medical Education and Neuroscience Institute which opened in January 2023.

“That’s very intentional. Having medical students have full and complete access from day one to one of the larger medical centers in the state, I think is a tremendous advantage as we look to recruit socially accountable students,” shared Nagowski.

The building itself is expected to cost at least $60 million dollars but will generate more in economic impact. According to a July 2021 report from Walden Economic Consulting released by both MU and CFVH, regional spending will increase by $124 million, tax payments to all governments will rise by $14.2 million and 922 local jobs will

be generated working on the project.

One of the primary goals for the school is to help find a solution for the lack of healthcare providers in the area, with studies showing that most health care students who study in an area stay and practice in that area. Methodist University has been working to expand their healthcare offerings for students both in person and online, adding on to their strong PA program, new therapy programs and nursing programs and now a SOM. “We’ve been moving over the years more and more in the healthcare and health sciences direction educationally. This is the crown jewel of all that. This is the seam that will bring all of that together and strengthen all of it. For Methodist University, it’s incredibly exciting.

It’s also exciting because we’re already seeing a halo effect of this just in terms of raising the status of Methodist University in the eyes of prospective students no matter what they’re thinking of majoring [in] yet, because we’re now a university that will be offering a medical school,” concluded Wearden.

Organized by the North Carolina Home Builders Association, the STARS Awards program honors the achievements of home building industry professionals from across the state. Winners receive recognition in areas such as marketing and advertising, web design, sales/information center, landscape design, interior merchandising, architecture/floor plan, remodeling/renovation and special projects. Awards are also given to local home builders associations.

The 2023 STARS Awards Gala took place on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2023 in Concord, NC. HBAF Executive Officer Natalie Fryer attended and accepted the award on behalf of the Association.

The award was given for their Zero Lot Line Project in June 2022.

For that project, the HBAF partnered with the Longleaf Pine Real estate Association to fight a moratorium on zero lot lines that was on schedule to be implemented by Cumberland County.

“Both associations sent emails to all their members encouraging them to contact the county commissioners. We made it easy by putting the link in the email and at the click of a button it was done! At the end of the first day, the commissioners received over 1,000 emails,” shared Fryer in a written statement. “On the day of the vote, over 200 members attended the county commissioners meeting and four members spoke during the public hearing. Everyone wore Housing Equals Jobs stickers.

While the outcome was not entirely in our favor; our voices were heard and we now have a seat at the table to discuss the update to the subdivision ordinance. It was a great experience to partner with the Realtors; joining forces made a larger impact on the elected officials.”

Scottie Chavis graduates from FBI Academy

UNC Pembroke alumnus SCOTTIE CHAVIS has joined an elite group of the country’s law enforcement officers after graduating from the FBI National Academy.

Chavis, a North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) captain, graduated as a member of the 287th session on Chavis Sept. 14 in Quantico, Virginia. Fewer than one percent of the country’s law enforcement officers have the opportunity to attend the program.

Captain Chavis is the most recent officer in department history to complete this prestigious program. Internationally known for its academic excellence, the Academy offers 10 weeks of advanced communication, leadership and fitness training.

Captain Chavis is assigned as a task force member to Raleigh's Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ISAAC). Captain Chavis recognizes the importance of accountability and ethics within an organization and exemplifies his commitment to the highest standard throughout daily work practices and personal demonstration.

Chavis joined the Highway Patrol in 1999 and was assigned to Troop B, District 1, Cumberland County and later served in Troop B, District VII, Robeson County. In 2006, he received orders to the executive protection detail for the Governor of North Carolina. During his tenure, he provided security to four different North Carolina governors and, in 2011, was promoted to the rank of

sergeant. In 2017, he was promoted to the rank of first sergeant and assigned to Internal Affairs and later as the training coordinator at the highway patrol’s driving track. In 2021, he was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the state’s fusion center.

During his time in ISAAC, he received a promotion to the rank of captain in 2022. His unique position on the task force as a Captain has allowed him to successfully connect the ISAAC and NCSHP to open lines of communication and become the primary point of contact for highway patrolmen across the state.

FCEDC’s John Hart receives BREC certification through Business Retention & Expansion International The Fayetteville Cumberland Economic Development Corporation’s Director of Strategic Partnerships JOHN HART is celebrating a recent professional success after receiving his BRE Coordinator certification through Business Retention & Expansion International.

According to the Hart BREI website, the BRE Coordinator (BREC) certification is the entry-level certification designed for those with a working knowledge and application of BRE, but have not yet risen to the level of a long-standing professional in the trade.

One must first complete the BREI Fundamentals Course before earning the BREC and then must complete designated levels of education to maintain the certification.

Hart joined the FCEDC team in May of 2023 and is responsible for establishing and maintaining close relationships with key employers in

the community while providing them with ongoing support.

John works closely with existing businesses and industries in the Fayetteville community. His work strives to build stronger relationships with and between existing employers, assisting them with any challenges they face and supporting their operations as they expand and grow.

Harnett County Emergency Services New Paramedic Academy Program will host first graduation Harnett County Emergency Services hosted a Paramedic graduation on Oct. 6, 2023, to celebrate the first graduating class of six new Paramedics.

Harnett County partnered with Central Carolina Community College to launch an in-house Paramedic Academy Program where Harnett County would serve as a satellite location. The partnership was created to meet the industry needs and fill the paramedic vacancies in the County.

Harnett County Emergency Medical Services Chief Alex Belanovich established the idea of creating an inhouse Paramedic Program over five years ago. He wanted to develop a program that would provide Harnett County citizens with better access to prehospital care in a non-emergency setting.

This is the first Paramedic Academy program offered by Harnett County and the graduation will mark the completion of a 30-week program. The accelerated program allows paramedic students to take 8-hour classes Monday-Friday for seven months instead of learning in a traditional college setting that would take over a year and a half.

Each of the six participating students were Harnett County Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT), who were selected to participate in the cohort program: ANDREW SLAUGHTER, ELANA MELVIN, NATHAN TRAUTMAN, JENNIFER DAVIS, MICAH ELLINGTON AND MICHAEL BORBAS.

CAPE FEAR EYE ASSOCIATES SPORTS NEW MODERN LOOK FOLLOWING RENOVATIONS, EXPANSIONS AND DEVELOPMENTS

C

ape Fear Eye Associates staff are celebrating the completion of substantial renovations to their office on Owen Drive.

Now offering office-based surgery, the location began performing in-office operations on Sept. 20.

Providing office-based surgery to clients delivers a number of benefits for employees and patients alike.

“The office-based surgery suite that we just opened, the one huge benefit of that is that it does not require IV sedation, so everything is sublingual, meaning that they don't have to get a shot or any IV to be sedated for a cataract procedure or other minor types of surgical procedures that they typically have to do in an ambulatory surgery center,” shared Cape Fear Eye Associates Chief Operating Officer Leo Swift.

This is the fourth office-based surgery center to open in the state and prior to this update, the doctors and patients would have to go to the hospital or a separate ambulatory surgery center.

Swift shared that office-based surgeries don’t incur as high of costs, saving money for the patient and the insurance company.

“It’s a really great opportunity for the Fayetteville community…and the equipment is state of the art.

We put in Zeiss microscopes, these are made over in Germany. They’re probably the best microscopes you can have on the market, along with other types of equipment that do really sophisticated type measurements,” shared Swift.

Common in-office surgeries include operations to treat cataracts, glaucoma, corneal procedures and more.

“The tools that the docs use are the same tools you’ll find at Duke University or the Mayo Clinic, that the same equipment that’s being [used in] the big cities, like Chicago, New York, LA is [being used] right here in Fayetteville,” commented Swift.

Cory Worrell, Director of Marketing for Cape Fear Eye Associates, led the Greater Fayetteville Business Journal on a tour of the newly renovated facility.

area, two surgical suites, a post-op space, a new conference room, a new space for the billing department, new doctor’s offices and upgraded exam rooms, new equipment and an updated, modern lobby.

“The goal is always to provide a safe place for the patients where they can get really good results,” commented Swift.

The Owen Drive location had a wing previously dedicated to pediatrics, but they are no longer doing pediatrics as they shift their focus to strictly surgical and medical. This wing will now be used as a space for one of the doctors. Worrell shared that the goal is for each doctor to have their own lobby.

newest equipment, Swift shared that the staff are working towards embracing new skills and new technologies as they are integrated into health practices.

“What’s happening in healthcare right now is AI… That is going to revolutionize medicine as we know it in the next few years,” remarked Swift.

Swift confirmed that they’ve begun training for some of their team in the uses for AI within their field.

Additional goals include renovations for their office on Metro Medical Drive. They’ve gotten rid of the optical shop at this location and they’re going to expand the call center and extend the lobby.

Swift, Worrell and the rest of the Cape Fear Eye Associates staff are excited about the positive developments the office has seen, and this is only the beginning of their growth.

They plan to bring on more surgeons next year.

LET’S MEET OUR HEROES

I

know the saying is “never meet your heroes,” but after the COVID-19 pandemic took two years of our lives, I am so honored to be part of an organization bringing some long overdue acknowledgement and celebration to the Health Care workers that saw us through it.

ABOUT THE JUDGING Greater Fayetteville Business Journal opened up the nomination process to the community for its inaugural Health Care Heroes awards in early September.

Our outside judging panel worked diligently to choose the finalists and ultimately the winners in each of the nine categories which included the lifetime achievement award.

Our judges were fair and objective. They disclosed any potential conflicts of interest, and did their best to choose who they believed were the best finalists and winners for the awards.

For our first ever Health Care Heroes event, I was able to learn so much about the impact so many of you have made in this community. More than 60 nominations were submitted for consideration and our panel of judges had the worst task I could imagine having to pick only nine winners out of the many deserving stories, glowing recommendations and tear jerking comments we received.

Editing through these nominations has been one of the hardest assignments I’ve ever been given. Having to condense stories of laughter, healing, personal moments and more was rough, but it was a thrill contacting the finalists!

In the following pages, you’ll see our top three finalists for each category and a small snippet on our Lifetime Achievement winner Dr. Ashok Jain, MD, FAAP, MBA, CPE, the CEO and Founder of Kidzcare Pediatrics.

SANDHILLS OPIOID RESPONSE CONSORTIUM TITLE: SORC Project Director ORGANIZATION: FirstHealth of

the Carolinas

WHAT THE NOMINATOR SAID: The Sandhills Opioid Response Consortium (SORC) is a community coalition committed to reducing opioid related overdoses across a five-county area including Hoke County. The mission of SORC is working as communities united to bring awareness, hope, freedom and recovery to those struggling with opioid addiction and dependence.

From 2020 to 2023, Sandhills Opioid Response Consortium peer support program had 239 encounters in Hoke County.

Through combined resources from the consortium and Tia Hart Recovery, 240 boxes of Narcan were distributed to community individuals and first responders. As part of community awareness and education, the consortium supported the Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) as well as provided stigma training for first responders. In partnership with Tia Hart Recovery, the consortium also supported the promotion of the safe syringe program.

WHAT THE NOMINATOR SAID: Vicky has been working at Cape Fear Valley Rehab Center for nearly 40 years providing Occupational Therapy services to patients regaining their independence during serious illness, injuries or life-changing diagnoses. She is the definition of a selfless health care worker who has provided care and positive outcomes to countless patients who have come through our rehab center. Her care focuses on increasing independence in activities of daily living.

Many times, patients remember her for years to come and always ask if she still works at Cape Fear Valley. Past patients come to visit and show how well they are doing and almost always ask specifically for Vicky to show them their independence outcomes. She runs the Stroke Support Group at our Rehab Center and specializes in providing care, resource opportunities and community support for stroke survivors and their family members/caregivers.

Our entire rehab center staff and patient population would agree that she is a valuable part of our Fayetteville community that deserves to be recognized for her almost 40 years of healthcare service at Cape Fear Valley Rehabilitation Center.

WHAT THE NOMINATOR SAID: Rachel's journey in healthcare has been extraordinary, marked by resilience and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

In her role as the Education Coordinator for Cardiac Diagnostics and CVRU, Rachel plays a pivotal role in ensuring our staff remain current not only with their annual requirements but also with the latest internal policies, procedures, equipment updates, career advancement opportunities and hospital events. Her dedication to keeping our team informed and connected is truly commendable, and she fosters a sense of unity among our staff.

In addition to her administrative duties, Rachel actively maintains her clinical skills by working as a nurse in the cardiac stress lab. Her commitment to hands-on experience is a testament to her dedication to excellence in patient care.

Rachel's impact extends beyond the hospital walls as she takes her expertise to the community, teaching Hands-Only CPR to members of the public.

During my time at the system, we were called upon to help others in need. Bladen County was quickly drowning, like many rural hospitals you hear about today. We were approached to provide assistance. Because Mike Nagowski has the ability to manage and lead effectively, Bladen turned around in one year, and they are now a part of Cape Fear Valley. Sometime later another close organization, Harnett County's hospitals, were in deep trouble. Mr. Nagowski and his team turned that organization around as well, and they became a part of Cape Fear Valley.

I know of no other individual who has done for this region what Mr. Nagowski has done for us, and because of that it is my honor and privilege to call him friend.

Dr. Matthews has also overseen nursing curriculum enhancements responding to student and community needs. r. Ashok Jain, MD, FAAP, MBA, CPE has been making an impact in North Carolina since he opened his first pediatrics practice, Hope Mills Pediatrics, in August of 2003. With only the goal of helping those in need, he made a business decision that would impact the course of his career.

“The day I opened my practice I put it on my website in bold, ‘I will take care of any patient who walks into my office.’ Any child who is sick, I will take care of them. Whether they have money or no money, insurance or no insurance. I don't care, I will take care of a sick child,” shared Jain.

Holding onto that promise for more than 20 years, Dr. Jain has continued to serve and support the need for pediatric care growing from one practice, to over 20 pediatric practices that employ more than 160 people across North Carolina and Georgia. Originally starting in an area with a lack of medical services, Jain has continued to follow that pattern, placing practices where there is a need.

Today, Jain shares that between four and five percent of NC youth come to his practices for health care.

Dr Jain’s impact spreads beyond U.S. borders.

In 2006, Dr. Jain launched the India Foundation, a philanthropic organization. The foundation has raised funds for Project Drishti, which provides eyeglasses or cataract surgery to needy patients in India and is also working to build a school in Rajasthan, India. The foundation has also contributed to many not-for-profit healthcare and educational initiatives for the needy in the US, Nepal and India.

In May 2007, Dr. Jain moved to Bangalore, India, to build and open MedSol (formerly Indus Westside) Hospital. The 200-bed for-profit hospital opened its doors in January 2010 and features state-of-the-art technology, six operating rooms, 45 critical care beds, and serves medical, trauma, surgical, cardiac, pediatric, neonatology and burn patients. Complete cardiac surgery, infertility/IVF, minimal access bariatric surgery and transplant surgery are just a few of the many programs the hospital offers.

In the coming years, Dr. Jain plans to continue the growth of pediatrics practices in North Carolina and neighboring states by building child-friendly infrastructure, enabling and empowering professionals to deliver excellent healthcare services to children, improve access to care, create local

employment opportunities, and contribute to the local economy.

As a member of the Lumbee Tribe, cardiovascular disease and its prevention and treatment are very important to Dr. Brooks. An analysis by the Duke Clinical Research Institute has shown that Lumbees of the south-central North Carolina tribe have a significantly higher burden of cardiovascular risk factors than do similar non-Lumbees. This research further identifies the need to have cardiovascular health care resources available to them and a reason Dr. Brooks continues to practice in the region.

Dr. Haworth is one of two neurosurgeons in Cumberland County, as well as surrounding counties. Recently, the other neurosurgeon took maternity leave, leaving Dr. Haworth as the only neurosurgeon. Instead of requiring patients to seek care at other locations, Dr. Haworth has added more patients to his schedule both in the office, as well as his surgery schedule.

Neurosurgery patients can have chronic pain, and for Dr. Haworth to go above and beyond by having their surgeries one or two weeks after their consultations is astounding. He will move mountains to provide exceptional care to any and all patients in order to significantly improve their quality of life.

Now, she works to provide her patients with straight answers and reassures them that she and her team at the CFVH Breast Care Center are ready to organize the treatment plan that they need.

WHAT THE NOMINATOR SAID: Fayetteville native Dr. William “Dickson” Schaefer practices general orthopedic surgery with a special interest in joint reconstruction at Fayetteville Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine of Cape Fear Valley Health. He has been a member of the Fayetteville Orthopaedics team since 2001. Dr. Schaefer performs approximately 400 joint replacements a year, claiming the title of one of the highest volume joint reconstruction surgeons in the area. Along with providing excellent care to patients in Cumberland County, he also finds time to serve on numerous boards in the area including formerly serving on the Board of Trustees of Cape Fear Valley Medical System and Bladen County Hospital. He is also former Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Fayetteville Academy and currently serves on the Board of Trustees at Methodist University. He has been a valuable asset to our Board and we look forward to continuing to collaborate with him!
