BLADEN COUNTY WELCOME SOVEREIGN AEROSPACE Leadership with the Town of Elizabethtown, Bladen County and Sovereign Aerospace all gathered at the Curtis L. Brown Jr. Airport to celebrate a new partnership announced on April 11, 2023. Sovereign Aerospace began expanding operations to Elizabethtown to offer flight instruction, general aviation maintenance and assumed duties as the fixed base operator for Curtis L. Brown, Jr. Airport. Expansion plans for the airport include expanding the runway into what is locally known as the “Brian Fordo property,” and adding three hangars to the property to house Sovereign Aerospace, airplane maintenance and aircraft painting operations. Sovereign Aerospace also partnered with Bladen Community College to begin working on an airport management training program for students.

LIVE, WORK, PLAY Bladen County and the Town of Elizabethtown officials announced their Live, Work, Play project, a multimillion-dollar development plan based around the Elizabethtown Industrial Park. This multi-acreage concept includes plans for an enhanced lakefront with an amphitheater and event lawn, the expansion of Cape Fear Winery, a hotel, daycare center, multiple medical facilities and offices and most importantly, housing.

The Live, Work, Play project addresses several parts of Bladen County’s 10-year Strategic Plan which will be used to tackle area development by highlighting the needs and strategic priorities of the County. The plan is estimated to cost more than $160 million and copies layouts seen in more urban areas combining Elizabethtown’s green space with a work component, affordable housing for the future workforce and commercial businesses.

SEVERN PEANUT COMPANY UPDATES BLADEN COUNTY FACILITY Severn Peanut Company, a peanut sheller, announced on April 4, 2023

that it would be investing $17 million into its Elizabethtown facility used for peanut butter production.

The move was expected to create 44 jobs and have a potential annual payroll impact of more than $1.8 million for the community. The investment included updates and renovations to the facility to allow for the production of bulk peanut butter.

CUMBERLAND COUNTY NVR’S FAYETTEVILLE FACILITY NEARLY COMPLETE NVR, Inc., a Virginia-based company that sells and constructs homes under three different brands across 15 states, announced the construction of a new 145,000-square-foot manufacturing facility located on 22 acres on Dunn Road and has worked on the project throughout 2023. Now nearly complete, the facility is expected to bring 189 jobs to Fayetteville and Cumberland County with the average wage estimated to be $45,000.

The new location has begun hiring, with full operations scheduled to start this year.

GREATER FAYETTEVILLE CHAMBER ANNOUNCES CONSUMER PROTECTION DIVISION The Greater Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce announced the establishment of its new Consumer Protection Division (CPD) on Oct. 19, 2023. An initiative dedicated to promoting consumer rights, ensuring fair business practices and fostering a trustworthy business environment within the Cumberland County community, the CPD works toward three main objectives to build trust within the business community and work to increase awareness of legitimate businesses by: Advocating for fair practices, empowering consumers and promoting swift conflict resolution.

FAYETTEVILLE’S FIRST MEDICAL SCHOOL Cape Fear Valley Health and Methodist University have combined forces to bring the first ever School of Medicine to Fayetteville, NC. Announced in February 2023, the Methodist University School

of Medicine at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center (SOM), a stateof-the-art institution, will soon be joining the Cape Fear Valley Health campus. The project is expected to cost around $120 million in total.

Methodist University plans to begin recruiting students in July 2025, begin classes in July 2026 and graduate its first class from the SOM in spring of 2031, pending approval by the LCME and SACSCOC.

HARNETT COUNTY New Harnett Health Cancer Center Health Professionals from around Harnett County came together on Monday, Aug. 28, 2023 to celebrate the official groundbreaking ceremony for the new Harnett Health Cancer Center and medical office building. Located right beside the Central Harnett Hospital building at 215 Brightwater Drive in Lillington, the new $40 million, three-floor, 66,000-square-foot facility will include multiple specialists, including orthopedics; ear, nose and throat; a surgical clinic, neurology, cardiology and rheumatology. The Cancer Center will include radiation and medical oncology, and expand the number of infusion chairs currently available at Central Harnett Hospital. Currently, radiation oncology is not available in Harnett County but is expected to be offered to local patients with this new addition. The project is slated to be complete in late 2024.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT CENTER COMING SOON The Harnett County Board of Commissioners voted to approve $5 million in matching funds to renovate the Magnolia Avenue School building into a workforce development center at their meeting on June 19, 2023. The City of Dunn and the Town of Four Oaks formed the I-95/I-40 Crossroads of America Economic Development Alliance (Alliance) in 2021 to promote economic development, including job creation along the I-95 corridor.

Central Carolina Community College will occupy the space and offer customized workforce development training for existing or new industry partners once renovations are complete.

The center will include incubator and soft landing spaces for new industries to begin interviewing and hiring personnel before their facilities open.

HIGH SPEED INTERNET COMING TO HARNETT High Point based internet provider Lumos announced the investment of a portion of more than $50 million for internet expansion in Harnett County in June of 2023. Lumos, a high-speed internet provider with a presence in over 200,000 homes and businesses throughout North Carolina and Virginia, is continuing their recent rapid expansion throughout the state by entering Harnett County as their fifth market. The $50 million investment will build nearly 600 miles of Fiber Optic Technology across Johnston and Harnett counties. Construction officially began in 2023.

HOKE COUNTY NEW AQUATIC CENTER The James A. Leach Aquatic & Recreation Center had its official grand opening on May 1, 2023. Located on Fayetteville Road, the building is two stories and measures 53,000 square feet. Inside, the main features are an NBA size basketball court, an Olympic sized swimming pool, walking track and numerous aquatic features, including a waterpark area with a waterslide. The facility also features weightlifting rooms, rooms for dance, martial arts, yoga, exercise and other classes and an indoor walking trail.

Amenities also include an inclusive playground designed for special needs children, a concession area and two party rooms.

HOKE COUNTY COURTHOUSE BEGINS CONSTRUCTION A new Hoke County courthouse project was confirmed in early 2023.

The project was contracted out to Silling Architects and Metcon Buildings and Infrastructure. The new three-story building will sit on the empty lot between Edinborough Avenue and East Elwood Avenue on Main Street. The courthouse project’s current projected cost is

ew Year’s Day is always a time of renewal. With a special 366 days ahead to accomplish goals, it's a shame that the will to keep so many resolutions doesn’t even last until February.

This year, I’ve decided to be honest with myself; no, I’m not going to start getting up early and exercising, no I’m not going to give up carbs and no, I won’t be signing up for a gym membership while on that ‘new year, new me’ high. Not to say that some of the local gym owners don’t have fabulous facilities and have tried effortlessly to recruit me throughout the year. (I see y’all and to all of you I say, you tried it! ‘A’ for effort all around.)

Instead I plan to focus on the new.

After making sure to stay connected with our local chambers of commerce and seeing all the ribbon cuttings already on the calendar for 2024, I am looking forward to continuing to cover all of the latest

CSI: Methodist University CAREFULLY CURATED FORENSIC SCIENCE PROGRAMS LEAD TO CAREERS

A

forensic science career is filled with investigation and intrigue, but as it turns out, pursuing high-end forensic science education is no mystery: Methodist University is the top choice.

“The Forensic Science program at Methodist University taught me everything I know,” said Ashley Hunt ’22, a graduate of MU’s Forensic Science and Criminal Justice programs, in a press release.

“When I got into the field, I already knew how to do so many things. The program helps you see all sides of the forensic science system. It was an awesome experience at Methodist University.”

Ashley Hunt is one example of the many alumni who can thank MU’s Forensic Science (CSI) program for part of their success early in their careers. After graduation in May 2022, Hunt was immediately able to find a job as a forensic technician with the Fayetteville Police Department.

“I’m able to go out to crime scenes and do everything from photographs to sketches to measuring,” said Hunt. “It’s fulfilling for me because I feel like it’s my way of helping people. The evidence I photograph and collect can be used in court to help bring justice.”

Methodist University offers Forensic Science (CSI) on campus as a bachelor’s degree and minor, providing students with a holistic view and understanding of forensic science from the crime scene to the courtroom while blending theory with ability.

“Most forensic science programs around the country only prepare students to work in a forensic science lab. They only focus on forensic biology and forensic chemistry,” said Dr. Steve Downs, associate professor and director of Forensic Science in a press release. “We focus on the crime scene and investigative side, and there’s only a handful of similar programs in the country that can do that.”

While Methodist University does offer a Forensic Science (Chemistry) program, Downs and the rest of MU’s Forensic Science (CSI) faculty pride themselves on preparing students for a variety of impressive careers. Recent alumni have gone onto careers with the FBI, Secret Service,

MU students work alongside expert faculty and utilize state-of-the-art facilities and equipment to study crime scenes, take forensic photography and do firearm investigations.

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI), Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), and much more.

“Our students go on to be everything from police officers and detectives to forensic psychologists, forensic pathologists, and lawyers,” Downs added.

The success of the Forensic Science program is built on the hard work of its one-of-a-kind faculty, who carry more than 60 years of combined real-world experience in forensic science.

Downs served nearly 30 years in the U.S. Army with more than 25 years as a Criminal Investigation Division (CID) agent. His military experience connected him to Dave Pauly, professor of Forensic Science, who also worked with the CID for nearly two decades. The faculty also includes professor of Forensic Science Dr. Bryan Brendley, who carries a doctorate in biology along with experience in the police force and classroom.

“Our experience really does help our students,” Downs said. “On top of our theoretical knowledge, we can

answer the hard questions like ‘How many homicides have you solved?

How many victims have you had to hold your arm around while they’re crying after their loved one was killed?’ We can give them the knowledge of what to expect in this field.”

Along with the experience, the program also teaches students practical application. With two applied forensic science labs fully equipped with high-end forensic science equipment, students can become experts in numerous areas: FORENSIC PHOTOGRAPHY: obtaining forensic evidence-quality images that can be used by forensic experts across the nation CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION: documenting and reconstructing crimes with a focus on bloodstain patterns, clandestine graves, and shooting scenes FIREARMS INVESTIGATIONS: learning how to shoot from dozens of different caliber handguns, rifles and shotguns in a safe environment The hands-on experience does not stop there. Periodically, the program even partners with the Fayetteville Fire Department to burn a car off

site – letting students examine evidence in the aftermath. For students, the classes are informative and enjoyable.

“So many of the forensic science classes end up being my favorite,” said senior Ally Mason in a press release.

Mason will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science (CSI) and Criminal Justice in May 2024.

“I loved the forensic firearms class because it showed me the entire process. But I also enjoyed the forensic photography and crime scene investigation classes because they’re hands on. To be able to process the evidence in a way that other students don’t is phenomenal.”

MU’s Forensic Science (CSI) program offers small class sizes to ensure a personal learning experience for each student. On top of that, each student has the opportunity to take an internship at a federal, state or local law enforcement agency, forensic laboratory, crime lab or medical examiner’s office.

Downs said many students have had an opportunity to analyze a real cold homicide case during their internship.

“The internships help our students network and build connections for jobs down the road,” Downs said. “If our students take advantage [of] all of the resources and opportunities we give them, they can leave the program with the knowledge it took us 15 years of working in the field to gain once they graduate.”

The faculty also coordinates off-site visits with government and private forensic science laboratories year-round, allowing students to better understand crime scene products, training requirements and the application process.

“We go to a lot of conferences, too,” added Mason. “It helped me understand all of the certifications I’ll need when I look for jobs. You meet all of the professionals and learn about all of the career opportunities in forensic science. It’s one of the many reasons why Methodist University has the best forensic science programs around.”

Mason has an internship with the Fayetteville Police Department currently and hopes to become a detective down the road – a goal made possible thanks to Methodist University’s Forensic Science (CSI) program.

The courthouse design features a 51,000-square-foot building with a connecting walkway to the jailhouse on the first floor. The first floor will also house the clerk of courts office, clerk’s hearing room, and a jury assembly room which will also act as a traffic court.

The second floor includes two courtrooms, the public defender’s office, and jury deliberation rooms. The third floor consists of two courtrooms, judges’ offices, and defendant holding spaces. There is also a small area for the district attorney to work onsite when needed.

According to City of Raeford officials, early stages of the construction process began in the summer of 2023 with construction slated to begin in 2024.

RESIDENTIAL HOUSING A PRIORITY On May 1, 2023, the Hoke County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously for the rezone designation of 93.2 acres of an unaddressed parcel located on Philippi Church Road and an addressed parcel at 5621 Philippi Church Rd. According to an excerpt from the Hoke County Subdivision Ordinance, the high density designation is intended to add flexibility for the County and developers to allow for higher density residential development where both sewer and water infrastructure is available.

This was part of a larger push by the county throughout 2023 to make residential housing a priority along with incorporating more amenities such as large box stores and shopping outlets for future residents.

USGA MOVES IN TO PINEHURST, NC The United States Golf Association officially moved into their completed building in Pinehurst in late December of 2023. The USGA first announced plans for Golf House Pinehurst in September of 2020.

Concepts for the facility included a new equipment-testing facility, innovation hub, museum/visitor center and offices.

The goal was to have the facility completed by 2023 and host five U.S. Open Championships in the golf-rich state by 2047.

The total $25 million investment included the construction of two buildings to be located near the clubhouse on the historic Pinehurst Resort property, housing 50 fulltime USGA staff members.

ROBESON COUNTY COMTECH BUSINESS PARK DEVELOPMENTS COMtech Business Park is a 700 acre site within Robeson County that serves to attract people of various industries and gather them all in one centralized location. In 2023, new tenants included UNCP, who purchased three acres and is leasing 12 others to create an agricultural innovation and research center and a new career and technical education high school. In addition to being located centrally within Robeson County, the site boasts easy access to both I-95 and I-74. COMtech staff shared that they are working with Robeson County Economic Development to prepare a space for a large warehouse or industrial facility onsite at COMtech while continuing plans for growth in the next few years.

DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION FOR LUMBERTON Two economic development groups, the Friends of Main Street Lumberton and Main Street Lumberton saw continued growth for the City of Lumberton in 2023.

Both organizations endeavor to revitalize the downtown area of Lumberton to encourage economic growth and community wellness.

SAMPSON COUNTY SAMPSON COMMUNITY COLLEGE CELEBRATES TRADES CENTER Sampson Community College Trades Center celebrated the first full year of classes in 2023. The project included expanding vocational training for career and technical education (CTE) classes for high school and traditional students for

high-demand jobs in electrical, masonry trades and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC). The project included the construction of a new building on the college’s campus and the space can be used for short-term, customized worker training for existing and new businesses.

High school students can complete a CTE pathway, while community college students can complete a certificate or degree. Other students can earn industry credentials and workers can complete short-term customized training.

R&R ANNOUNCES NEW LOCATION R & R Brewing, a microbrewery originating in Mount Olive, NC announced it will be bringing Sampson County’s first ever taproom and their second location to downtown Clinton at 104 Fayetteville Street in the historical Henry Vann Building.

Originally announced by the City of Clinton in early 2023, Owner and head of “Hoperations” Ryan Roberts shared with the Greater Fayetteville Business Journal that he has toured the space planned for the new taproom and early structural work has begun to pave the way to begin fully renovating the space. According to Roberts, early conceptual plans for the lower level include a taproom to the left of the entrance and a full restaurant space to the right. The restaurant will be a new addition to the R & R Brewing Brand, with their Mount Olive location being taproom only.

NC WELDING, LLC ANNOUNCES ROSEBORO EXPANSION North Carolina Welding, LLC purchased 17.21 acres from Sampson County for $375,000 as part of their expansion in Roseboro, NC in early 2023. According to a press release from the County, the primary goal for the purchase was to prepare the site for business and industrial use. The full property measuring 20.5-acres is located on NC Highway 24, only a short 15-minute commute to Interstate 95.

ACHIEVERS Active Defender receives Air Force SBIR Grant Active Defender announced on Monday, Dec. 18 that it has been selected by AFWERX for a SBIR Phase 1 contract in the amount of $74,836 focused on continued development of the company’s emergency alerting/communication application to address the most pressing challenges in the Department of the Air Force (DAF).

The Air Force Research Laboratory and AFWERX have partnered to streamline the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) process by accelerating the small business experience through faster proposal to award timelines, changing the pool of potential applicants by expanding opportunities to small business and eliminating bureaucratic overhead by continually implementing process improvement changes in contract execution.

“We are extremely appreciative for the opportunity to work with the U.S. Air Force to further develop the capabilities of our Active Defender application through the SBIR grant. School safety and security is our passion and we are excited to explore providing our technology to Department of Defense schools as well as its potential utilization outside of educational Institution,” shared ” Active Defender Founder/ CEO Jim Boyte in a press release.

The winners, Justin Pruitt and Jaelan Rainey, showcased their innovative business ideas at the Tulsa Initiative Gala and Pitch Competition held on December 2, 2023, in Fayetteville, NC. JUSTIN PRUITT, a 19-year-old holistic spiritual healer, leader, and star student athlete attending Fayetteville State University, emerged as a co-winner of the Tulsa Initiative Pitch Competition. Majoring in Business Marketing with a concentration in Entrepreneurship, Justin founded "The Juice," his own business brand. Specializing in organic and chemical-free products that prioritize environmental safety, Justin began advertising on campus thirteen months ago. Within this short period, he achieved remarkable success, making over 500+ sales and securing placement in three local stores.

NCDOT Names Acting Division 6 Engineer The highway division responsible for Bladen, Columbus, Cumberland, Robeson and Harnett counties has a new leader.

LEE JERNIGAN, a registered professional engineer, was named this week as the acting Division 6 Engineer for the N.C. Department of Transportation. He replaces Drew Cox, who was promoted last month to become the department’s Eastern Deputy Chief Engineer, which oversees half of the state.

Cox, who has worked for the department for 31 years, filled a vacancy after the November retirement of Kevin Bowen.

Transportation Secretary Joey Hopkins introduced Jernigan during a Board of Transportation meeting held on Jan. 4 in Raleigh.

Jernigan returned to the NCDOT last May to serve as the Division 6 Deputy Engineer, after an 11-year career with the City of FayetteJernigan ville. While with the city, Jernigan was City Traffic Engineer, Interim Director for Engineering & Infrastructure, and Assistant Public Services Director.

“I am excited and humbled to be working alongside such a dedicated and talented team of professionals in Division 6,” Jernigan said in a press release. “I have already seen how these employees take pride in serving the public, improving the transportation network and delivering projects that people need and want.”

Prior to his employment with the city, Jernigan worked for 17 years for NCDOT. He spent much of that time with Division 6, which is headquartered in Fayetteville. Jernigan has a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from N.C. State University.

FTCC CDL graduate wins national trucking industry award BRANDON MEREDITH, a graduate of Fayetteville Technical Community College’s Commercial Driver’s License program, has been named the winner of the 2023 Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence Award.

The national award, presented

by Fastport Transport, recognized the trucking industry’s best veterans-turned-drivers who are in the Meredith first year of their careers.

Meredith was announced as this year’s winner on Friday, Dec. 15 - at the Veteran Ready Summit in Washington, DC. He received the competition's top prize - a fully loaded Kenworth T680 Next Generation truck valued at $155,000. Meredith was also awarded a full scholarship for a business degree.

Earlier this year, when Meredith learned he was one of five final-

ists for the award, he said winning the truck would help him achieve his eventual goal of becoming a self-employed driver.

“This contest could help me become an independent contractor,” said Meredith in a press release.

“That’s where I see myself going becoming an owner-operator, and then, reluctantly maybe, eventually settling into a desk job.”

The prestigious award is a cap on a successful year for the rookie driver. Meredith officially separated from the U.S. Army on March 31 but had a job the very next day as he spent the final month of his active-duty service training for his CDL through FTCC's Transition Tech program.

It was a major shift in careers for Meredith, who spent the bulk of his 20-year military service with Special Operations Forces, working as a Civil Affairs Soldier, a combat medic and a candidate assessor. He spent the year driving a tanker truck - a rarity for drivers so early in their career - and he garnered Driver of the Month awards in his second and third months with Slay Transportation in Fayetteville.

oniara and Robert Harris are expanding their hit eatery The Vegan Spot with a new brick and mortar location. The restaurant, located at 3421 Murchison Road, Suite A in Fayetteville, NC, will be the area’s first and only vegan pizzeria.

Yoniara shared that she switched over to a plant-based diet in 2016 to benefit her health. She became fully vegan in 2019 and has been vegan ever since. Seeing the positive impact this change in diet had on her own life and noting the lack of plantbased eateries in the area, Yoniara and her husband Robert set out to fill that need in the community.

According to Yoniara, the decision to expand from just a food truck to having a sit down restaurant had always been a part of the plan.

“It’s kind of crazy how everything came about, because I wasn’t even looking for a building at the time … one of our customers actually told us about the place that was vacant and the area that it’s in, I think that is something that we can work with. It’s building up around here on Murchison road and we want to be a part of cleaning up and making things better over here,” remarked Yoniara.

With the new location the team of two have expanded to a full staff which includes a general manager, a

store manager and about nine team members.

“With the food truck we used to sell out a lot. So because we now have a big freezer and a refrigerator to store more food I don’t see us having problems with selling out. We do have a permanent location now. So we have people coming from Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham, Spring Lake… there would be people that would come to Fayetteville just to come to the food truck and they were having such a hard time following us. So I mean, it’s just going to be better all around for our supporters.”

While the food truck pays homage to the area’s military community with its camo exterior, the new restaurant is dedicated to the City of Fayetteville with its personalized “Can Do” menu. The food truck will be parked

in the parking lot of their new location, so guests can swing by one spot for either of their popular menus.

“The food truck is the grill where you’ll continue to get the same items like our Philly cheesesteaks, our burgers, that menu is the same. With the Can Do menu, what we’re doing, it’s a pizzeria, so you’ll be able to get different pizzas. We have different appetizers like garlic knots pepperoni croissant rolls, that you’ll be able to get. We have desserts now. It’s not just a restaurant for you to come and sit down and eat. We also have store items like different snacks that you can come and purchase, different drinks, stuff like that,” shared Yoniara.

The pizza’s are named in honor of some of Fayetteville’s most defining features. Customers can enjoy a shrimp and beef pizza called The Cape Fear Surf and Turf, a veggie pizza called The Botanical Garden, a spicy buffalo chicken pizza called The Haymount Haymaker, Can Do Calzones and more.

Additionally, Yoniara shared that they are working on getting their license to sell alcohol and are looking at vegan wine options. Once things are up and running and the frenzy of opening settles down, she hopes to introduce small events after hours.

With more space to work in, Yo-

niara shared she’ll be offering meal prep services regularly to customers and the restaurant will offer catering services. On Sundays, the store will be closed to the public but will be available as a private venue for groups to host gatherings The food truck will operate from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and the restaurant will operate 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Both services are closed on Sundays (except for the case of private parties).

The date for the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony will be Jan. 17 as long as all goes according to plan. Yoniara shared that some of the new equipment is still being delivered and installed. They ordered six new pizza ovens to ensure they can serve all of their hungry customers in a timely manner and they are also working on their digital menu board.

While it is hard work, Yoniara shared that it’s a lot of fun and her “dream come true.”

A

new indoor sports facility is coming to Fayetteville to train the next generation of great baseball players.

On Jan. 4, the Fayetteville Cumberland County Economic Development Corporation announced that D-BAT Baseball and Softball Academies is opening its newest facility at 3725 Ramsey Street. It is expected to open in late April and will initially create 10 jobs.

D-BAT Indoor Baseball and Softball Academies, founded in 1998 in Dallas, Texas by Cade and Kyle Griffis, is the largest network of training facilities in the country.

D-BAT’s main goal is to provide a quality teaching environment with professional instruction to enhance the baseball and softball experience for players at all levels.

D-BAT operates 135 world-class baseball and softball training facilities across the United States.

The Fayetteville location is the fifth D-BAT franchise in North Carolina and the first in the eastern part of the state. D-BAT is known for its premier level instructors that have worked with more than 20 first-round Major League Baseball draft picks. Hitting, pitching, catching, fielding, agility,

strength and conditioning and other specialized training opportunities are available year-round in a climate-controlled environment. D-BAT also offers 50 baseball camps and clinics annually for players of all skill levels.

Fayetteville franchise owner and current active-duty soldier Wayne Richey was drawn to the organization’s mission and the opportunities it creates. “While I transition out of the military and into civilian life, my family has decided to plant our roots here in Fayetteville and give back to our community,” said Richey in a

press release.

“D-BAT will include 12 indoor batting cages, state of the art technology and 15,000 sq. feet of awesomeness.”

offer a wide range of products to suit all ability levels. Memberships include discounted options for batting cage rentals and private lessons. The location is expected to host numerous camps and clinics throughout the year.

New to the Symposium lineup, the 2024 event will also host the first ever Resource & Career Fair held specifically on Feb. 21 from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. which will allow corporate, U.S. government and military employers to come onsite to look for candidates of all skill levels. The Resource and Career Fair is open to active duty, military spouses, Veterans and national guard and reserve members.

“We are already sold out at 80 exhibitors in the expo hall. There are still a few tables for our recruiting event, they are available to government organizations and industry,

at very reasonable prices. (Free for government and military organizations.),” shared Gordner.

The event is held every year by the Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association International (AFCEA) North Carolina Chapter.

The NC Chapter includes over 300 technology professionals from across several technology communities in the Fort Liberty and Raleigh NC area, including HQ FORSCOM, HQ USARC, JSOC, USASOC, XVIII Airborne Corps, 82 ABN Div, GISA, Ft Liberty NEC, as well as DoD industry partners and research facilities in Raleigh. Along with their annual TechNet conferences, the chapter also hosts monthly luncheons and golf tournaments. It also supports the development of future technology leaders by presenting scholarships to college students and STEM grants to local teachers.

In August of 2023, the chapter’s ROTC and Veteran's Scholarship Program held a ceremony at Fayetteville State University (FSU) which awarded scholarships to ROTC cadets at Campbell University, North Carolina State and FSU and a Veteran at Fayetteville Technical

Community College. These awards were in addition to chapter scholarships given to graduating high school seniors.

Also in August at their Chapter Luncheon, the AFCEA awarded 31 local educators each $1,000 STEM grants. Educators submitted proposal ideas on how they would use funds to grow STEM education in their classrooms and the awardees were invited to share their ideas at the luncheon.

According to Gordner, funds raised during TechNet fund Local Teacher STEM Grants and ROTC and Veteran student scholarships were valued at $75,000 per year.

Registration is still open to vendors and attendees for the 2024 TechNet Fort Liberty event. Anyone in the military or who is a government civilian working in the technology industry from the North Carolina region is encouraged to attend.

Those without Department of Defense IDs are also encouraged to arrive 30 minutes early, to get a Fort Liberty Visitors pass.

ARTS COUNCIL OF FAYETTEVILLE/CUMBERLAND COUNTY AWARDING MORE THAN $1.1M TO ARTISTS AND NONPROFITS IN THE NEW YEAR.

T

he Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County is on track to award almost $1.2 million in grants and allocations to artists, municipal entities and nonprofit organizations in the new year.

One of the organization’s primary goals since its formation has been to infuse money into the creative economy in Cumberland County as a facilitator for artists and arts/culture nonprofit organizations. By leveraging local support from Cumberland County and the City of Fayetteville, the Arts Council has grown the capacity of the local arts organizations to elevate Fayetteville as a tourist destination in the region. With 10 grant and allocation programs online in 2024, the Arts Council has expanded access to individual artists and arts/culture nonprofits in ways not previously available in the region.

“This is an exciting new year for the Arts Council,” said Kennon Jackson, Chief of Staff, in a press release. “The Arts Council and its Board, staff and community partners are fully celebrating the 50 years of hard work that so many have put into growing the creative community in Cumberland County.”

Two hallmark grant opportunities available in early 2024 that will deepen and expand connections between artists, organizations and communities include the Project Support Grant and new Creative Placemaking Grant initiatives.

With guidelines already posted and applications opening on Jan. 15, Project Support Grants increase Art, Culture, and/or History-focused programming in Cumberland County. The 501(c) organizations who meet the eligibility requirements may request grant funds to support up to three distinct program activities for $15,000 each in the coming year.

Projects may fall into one or more of six grant tracts, including the following: Series Support, Inclusive Outreach, Education, Military Arts, Cultural Tourism and Collaborative Projects. Arts Council staff will offer workshops to new and returning applicants beginning in late January 2024. Guidelines, workshop information and the Project Support Grant application portal are available on the Arts Council’s website.

pilot Creative Placemaking Grant Program. The mission of the Creative Placemaking Grant is to provide support for collaborative partnerships that build capacity by engaging a community, district or neighborhood through Public Art strategies that enhance economic development and advocate for social and environmental change. The pilot initiative will award up to five $10,000 grants in early 2024. Successful Creative Placemaking initiatives will chal-

lenge the spaces they inhabit in new and innovative ways. They will also activate underserved populations and geographic regions within Cumberland County while demonstrating the importance of public art as a catalyst for progress. Interested 501(c) eligible organizations and municipal entities are encouraged to discuss their proposed Creative Placemaking opportunity with Arts Council staff. Guidelines, additional information and the application portal are available on the

Arts Council’s website. Letters of Intent (LOI’s) for Creative Placemaking Grants are due by Jan. 26.

The Arts Council of Fayetteville/ Cumberland County is also currently accepting applications for its third quarter FY24 Mini Grants Program through Feb. 1.
