LETTER
PUBLISHER

Summer in Mandan is more than a season—it’s an experience. As we embrace warm weather, long evenings, and the joyful energy of our community, this edition of Mandan Magazine invites you to explore our city through a truly local lens with our Self-Guided Summer Pub Crawl.
In this special feature, we shine a spotlight on the bars and lounges that are the heart of our social scene. From riverside patios and family-friendly favorites to classic neighborhood pubs and innovative cocktail spots, each establishment brings its own flavor, character, and hospitality to Mandan. Whether it’s the military-rooted camaraderie of Black Lions Pub, the historical inspiration behind Big Stick Cigar Lounge, or the comfort-meets-craft of Old Ten Bar & Grill, Mandan’s bar scene is as diverse as it is inviting.
What makes this feature even more special is that every bar highlighted is a proud member of the Mandan Progress Organization (MPO). Their commitment to community and connection is something we proudly celebrate. I also want to extend a warm thank you to each owner and team member who welcomed us into their spaces and shared their stories.
As you enjoy your own version of the Mandan Pub Crawl this summer, I encourage you to take it slow, meet the owners, try something new, and soak in the unique atmosphere that makes each stop memorable.
Of course, no Mandan summer is complete without our iconic lineup of community events. Don’t miss Touch a Truck, a family favorite where kids can explore big rigs up close; Buggies and Blues, our classic car and music celebration; and the thrilling Mandan Rodeo Days, a long-standing tradition that captures the true spirit of the West. And let’s not forget the crown jewel of the season—the legendary Mandan Independence Day Parade—a patriotic and unforgettable celebration that brings together thousands in the heart of our city.
Thank you for picking up this issue and for supporting Mandan, our businesses, and our incredible community. Here’s to a summer of memories, connection, and local adventure.
See you on the crawl, Matt

1700 E Main St, Mandan (Located inside Send It! 24/7 Cornhole)
Chucker’s Sports Bar is located inside Send It! 24/7 Cornhole. The concept of a dedicated cornhole facility grew from the creators’ genuine love of cornhole. Current co-owner Jedediah started dreaming up a cornhole venue with a liquor license, and he brought on fellow cornhole lovers Brad Anderson and Brandon Koch as co-owners. The trio brought the idea to the Mandan Business Pitch challenge, taking first place the second year, and were able to open Send It!
Story: Maria Brezny | Photos: al schirado
In 2022. Jed and Brad are still a part of the ownership, and while Brandon has taken a step back, three new owners have joined since: Tamar Deichert, Deidre Hillman, and David Beck. “My husband John and I have been supporters since day one,” explains Tamar. “We came here to hang out pretty much anytime we went out,” says Tamar. “When they asked us if we wanted to be a part of it, it was a no brainer. It’s our second home basically.”
Chucker’s Sport Bar is the 21+ part of the establishment with a full-service bar, six axe throwing lanes, darts, e-tabs, and a rentable party room. The cornhole side hosts regular leagues, is family-friendly, and affordably priced, only costing $10/person to throw bags all day. The cornhole side is also rentable as an event space for anyone and anything. “We have a need for reasonably priced event venues with accessibility, and that’s what attracted me,” explains Deidre. “People can convert the space to whatever they want.” While entrepreneurship comes with many stresses, Jed enjoys the unique challenges. “Your margins are very thin, but that’s the code you are trying to crack, and it’s been fun,” he says.

Some of Chucker’s most loved drinks include their house margaritas, Bloody Marys, and Caesars. Check out their website for summer drink specials, happy hour, and daily specials.

Stage Stop
611 6th Ave SE, Mandan
Stage Stop is an iconic location in Mandan, serving delicious food and drinks in their western-themed saloon. Luke Clausen bought the location back in 2018, and it re-opened in April of 2019 after undergoing a remodel.
Story: Maria Brezny | Photos: Al schirado
“The building was in tough shape, so we needed to clean everything up,” Luke explains. “The building has so much character and history, and we wanted to bring that out.” With the re-opening, Luke also wanted to evolve the location from just a bar to also having a family-friendly restaurant side. “I wanted to have a restaurant with a nightlife feel rather than just a bar,” he says. “It’s been a long learning curve.” The food has quickly become a well-known favorite.
Stage Stop offers events for adults and children alike. For kids, they’ve hosted a variety of events like monster truck events, foam parties, and karaoke. For the older crowd, they also bring in bands on the weekends, host foam parties, trivia nights, and much more.
Jamie Haff, general manager of Stage Stop, enjoys the challenge of bringing unique events to Mandan.
“I enjoy having an owner who supports my ideas,” he says. “Sometimes I don’t have the whole idea, but I do research, try to put it all together. I also enjoy trying to find different entertainment, trying different bands and doing other things that people aren’t doing. It’s a lot, but I enjoy doing that.”

In addition to the bar and restaurant, Stage Stop also has a liquor store. “The liquor store attached to Stage Stop is Mandan’s largest liquor store,” says Jamie. “I take pride in that liquor store. We try to have a wide variety, things people don’t find elsewhere.” So whether you’re looking for a tasty meal, a certain drink, or something fun to do on the weekends, Stage Stop has something for everyone.
Jamie’s Drink of Choice: Fireball
Hours: M-Sat: 10 AM-1 AM, Sun 11 AM- 10 PM, 21+ after 10 PM

Black Lions
412 W Main St, Mandan
Black Lions Pub & Pizza was first opened in 2019 by Garrett Hooker. Garrett, a natural entrepreneur, was drawn to the challenge and freedom of owning his own business. His business partner Robert Puttre first came on in the summer of 2021 and eventually bought into the pub as well, bringing with him a wealth of pizza knowledge.
Story: Maria Brezny | Photos: al schirado
The name Black Lions comes from both men’s time in the military where they served in the 1st battalion, 28th infantry Army regiment nicknamed the Black Lions.
Today, the bar and restaurant is known for two things: amazing pizza and cold beers. “Our pizza is hand-crafted,” describes Garrett. “We mix up the dough every day. It’s a two-day dough to ferment, so the dough you eat today was mixed up two days ago.” The pizzas are baked on a firestone which gives the crust a crispy exterior and soft interior. To go with the pizza, Black Lions offers a variety of local beer on tap, as well as a full bar, so there’s a drink for everyone.
The friendly and inviting atmosphere is another draw of Black Lions. “We have really good staff, really good regulars, everybody is awesome,” describes Garrett.
“My favorite part is meeting people and seeing the smile on people’s faces when they enjoy your pizza or they laugh at a dumb joke you said.”

Sports are always playing on their TVs, and they host different events like weekly trivia. Happy hour is every day from 3-6 pm with daily specials running Monday through Thursday.

Bennigan’s
1506 27th St. NW, Mandan
Bennigan’s has been open in Mandan for nearly seven years now. The initial idea came from one of the goals of a Mandan Economic Opportunity Prosperity Committee, to find a franchise restaurant to open in Mandan.
Rob Knoll, now one of the owners of the Mandan location, was on this committee, and he reached out to one of the owners of Bennigan’s who was originally from Mandan, graduating only one year ahead of Rob. After much discussion, planning, and hard work, Bennigan’s opened in August of 2018. While it was not his original plan to own Bennigan’s, he has come to really love it. One thing he enjoys is being able to serve people delicious, high-quality food. “90% of our food is made from scratch,” he describes. “The food is more flavorful, and it’s homemade, so I think that’s what draws people in. Also, our portions are big. That was our biggest complaint when we first opened. Too much food. So we had to make a lighter lunch menu.” The friendly, welcoming restaurant is great for anyone looking for a delicious meal or unique drink, regardless of age. Bennigan’s happy hour and daily specials can be found on their Facebook page.

Food of Choice: Buffalo Bone-In Wings

Big Stick Cigar Lounge
104 2nd Ave NW, Mandan
Big Stick Cigar Lounge is North Dakota’s first and only cigar lounge. The lounge opened in July of 2024. Co-owner and general manager Josette Dupree envisioned Big Stick as a place of community where cigar enthusiasts could gather to relax and build camaraderie. An important part of cultivating this atmosphere was the aesthetic of the bar. “I wanted that feel of my legendary Mandan,” explains Josette. “Teddy Roosevelt had spoken to the residents of Mandan across the street in the early 1900s and I want that feel of, if Teddy came in to buy a cigar from me, what would it look like at that time? That was how the name came about too, from Teddy’s quote, speak softly and carry a big stick.” While cigars are their main focus, they also have a carefully curated cocktail menu. Sterling Severson, assistant manager, is always coming up with new carefully crafted drinks, and his summer cocktail menu will focus on flavors like pear and orange flower, with liquors like tequila and rum for some lighter, summer options. They also have a wide variety of non-alcoholic options meant to be paired with cigars.
Josette’s Drink of Choice: Bourbon with cigar

Main street drive thru entryMPOlevel
1005 E Main St, Mandan
When Jerry and Shawn Stryker, owners of Main Street Drive Thru Liquor moved to the area, they had no idea what they wanted to do, but motivated by their desire to be close to grandchildren, they took a chance. When they found this old McDonald’s building for sale, it gave them the idea to open a drive through liquor store. However, Main Street Drive Thru is more than just a liquor store with a drive through. It is also a coffee shop and full-service bar. The crossover between businesses allows for a unique creativity in their drinks and services. When they first opened back in 2012, they were the only two employees for 18 months, working full days seven days a week. Their dedication has made their location a popular Mandan destination, with people coming for their espresso martinis, bloody mary’s, craft beers, and large variety of coffee and red bull drinks.

Ohm’s
808 W Main Street, Mandan
Story: Maria Brezny | Photos: al Schirado
Ohm’s Cafe in Mandan first opened in 1947. The cafe serves comfort, homestyle food in a friendly atmosphere. Current owner Casey Keller bought the cafe from her grandparents and aunt in January 2024 with her now-husband, Taylor McMonagle. “I have worked here since I was 12 years old,” says Casey. “This place has been such a huge part of my life. I couldn’t pass up the chance to carry on the legacy my grandparents started 30 years ago. I love to cook, bake and just the all-around ins and outs of the industry itself. I feel like this is what I was born to do, and I’m proud to do so.” Casey works hard to make sure the cafe feels like home to regulars and newcomers alike. “With the name and business being established since 1947, it’s the memories that keep this place alive,” she describes. “We want everyone to feel like they’re coming back home when they visit. As our shirts say, ‘Come Home to Ohm’s.’ “One new thing Casey has brought to the cafe since taking over ownership is a bar. “The idea was to bring in more of a supper crowd as we decided to stay open later into the evenings,” Casey explains. “It’s also been a hit with our breakfast crowd on the weekends.” Bloody Mary’s and Clam Diggers are $1 off every Saturday and Sunday. Both mixes are made in-house.

Old Ten Bar & Grill has become a staple in Mandan, well loved for freshly made comfort food and handcrafted drinks. Co-owners Nate Wolf and Curt Miller grew up in the restaurant industry and wanted to open a restaurant they felt Mandan had a need for, culminating in Old Ten opening on August 7th, 2019. With one side a family friendly restaurant and the other side a 21+ bar, there is something for everyone. On the food side, they are known for their freshly made burgers, pastas, pizzas, and apps. On the bar side, their handcrafted drinks like margaritas, old fashioneds, and long islands have made them a popular destination. They also have a variety of tap beers. “We try to have a little of everything here,” describes Curt. Despite the restaurant opening only six months before the pandemic, Old Ten managed to maintain steady business, a feat Curt attributes to his hardworking staff. “We’ve been fortunate enough to have a loyal group of employees who’ve become like family,” he describes. The atmosphere they’ve created also makes Old Ten stand out. “Our employees treat our customers like they would treat themselves,” Curt says. “You’re in here to have a good time. We want you to feel like we’re hosting a party, and you’re going to have some fun.”

Old town Tavern/scapegoat

Old Town Tavern is best known in Mandan for its cold drinks and welcoming atmosphere. Mike Thompson, owner of Old Town, grew up in the industry. “My dad owned the bar before me,” explains Mike. “When he retired, I had a hard time seeing it go anywhere else, and I bought it from him in 2015.” A diverse range of people enjoy drinks at the Old Town, creating a fun atmosphere, and the bar has a loyal base of regulars. “The best part is camaraderie with the customers,” Mike says. “You meet a lot of interesting people, and I consider many of my customers my friends.” These same customers expressed similar sentiments, while also citing their appreciation for the quality of the drinks. “You can be in here when it’s 100 degrees out, and the beer that comes out of the cooler is ice cold,” one client emphasized. Mike employs an award-winning mixologist who specializes in old fashioneds, martinis, and other drinks. Between the drinks and the company, there is something for everyone at Old Town Tavern.

The Paddle Trap is a bright and casual family-friendly restaurant located right on the Missouri River. Scenic views, delicious food, and a relaxed atmosphere are trademarks of The Paddle Trap. Natalie Eslinger, the general manager, has been at The Paddle Trap for four years. “I love the variety we offer,” she says. “The fact that our chefs, bartenders, and managers are able to have creativity when it comes to our menus and what we offer for specials is what I love most.” This creativity results in delicious meals and drinks. Some favorite drinks among customers include huckleberry margaritas, mojitos, and mules, as well as the spicy jalapeno and coconut margaritas. In the summer, people can enjoy eating outdoors overlooking the Missouri. On the south patio, people can order from their food truck, The Taco Trap, and enjoy drinks from the outdoor bar. Silver dollar bar
200 E Main St, Mandan
The Silver Dollar Bar has been a core part of Mandan’s downtown since it first opened in 1963. When new owners bought the bar, they wanted to give it a refresh and a new image. After ten months of renovations, the bar re-opened under new management in August of 2023. Jakob Parisien, manager since August of 2024, says the refresh has created a fun new atmosphere and encourages people to stop by and see the updates. “It’s a lot of fun to come and have a couple drinks,” he says. One of their main draws now has become hosting dart teams for leagues, tournaments, and casual play. They also host a couple street dances in the summer with live music. “We close half the street down, have a big stage, big lights, big speakers, two outside bars and three inside,” Jakob describes. Music starts at nine and goes until midnight. They are also planning an event during the 4th of July, so stay tuned for more information. In addition to their fun events and atmosphere, Silver Dollar creates a new specialty drink menu every two months, with fun themed drinks for the time of the year. Check out their website and socials to find the latest specials.

Authentic Western Jewelry
1806 & Co.
1806 & Co., located on Main Street in Mandan, is a veteran-owned, authentic Native American and western jewelry store specializing in sterling silver, turquoise, and gemstones from all over the world. They sell mostly handmade pieces, made by highly-skilled artisans, including rings, necklaces, cuffs, bracelets, bangles, earrings, bolo ties, belts, lanyards, shoes, cufflinks, pendants, money clips, hair accessories, and more. “I wanted Mandan to have something that it had never had before,” explains owner and founder, Stephanie Schmidt-Claymore. “You’re not going to buy something from here and see it somewhere else. It’s going to be one-of-a-kind.” Her selection has something for men, women, old, and young alike.
The jewelry 1806 & Co. carries would be difficult to find anywhere else. They have grown a reputation for their selection of authentic Navajo pearls made by female Navajo artists, in a market saturated by knock-offs. Supporting female artists is important to Stephanie: “I do this to not only provide the jewelry, but also to provide a space for women
to collaborate and do really cool things.”
While the Mandan storefront will celebrate two years this Memorial Day, 1806 & Co. has been open since 2021. Stephanie used to operate out of a trailer and travel to different shows. However, she is happy to have roots firmly planted in Mandan. The name she chose for her business reflects those roots. “When I moved back home, I wanted something that stuck to where I came from, so no matter where I went in the world, it resonated with coming back to home. 1806 runs through Mandan and the heart of North Dakota into South Dakota connecting our ranch to our store,” she explains. “The Company stands for all the artists and people, because I would be nothing without the people who help me make it what it is.”
Visit 1806 & Co. at 503 E Main St. Plaza Suite 4, Mandan or online at 1806andco.com. For the most upto-date hours, visit their Facebook @eighteen06andcompany.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE WINNER

My fiancé says I have an eye for beautiful sights (that’s why I chased after her). I’m always stopping to capture the sunrise and sunsets. Hoar frost is always so beautiful too, the morning of this picture I had just happened to be out running errands when I noticed how pretty the bridge looked with the thick frost everywhere. I wanted everyone to be able to see it also, so I got out and snapped the picture.

Title: 140 Year Old Sims Church Who took the photo: Paulette Bullinger Category: County Category Sponsored by: Comfort Inn & Suites
I was attending a concert at the Lutheran church in Almont with a friend. We decided to drive out to Sims to photograph the historic church. I have photographed this church previously, but this evening the fall colors were amazing. The little stream reflected the steeple perfectly. The most interesting part of the photo is how the reeds in the stream reflect and create a “lion’s face” if you turn the photo to the side slightly. This is the church former First Lady Laura Bush visited in 2008. The church was established in 1884.

Kayaking the Heart River is a favorite activity for many in the BisMan community. The water is shallow compared to the neighboring Missouri River, which is great to do with the whole family. The stretch is about 5 miles down river from the bridge just past Johnson’s to Legion Park. I kayak the Heart about a dozen or so times each summer if the water level is high enough. When on the river I sometimes find a place of peace and serenity.
Other times it is a great place for comadre of friends, family, and dogs to enjoy the outdoors.
