Tips for your perfect holiday party - from setting the table to serving a new favorite meal

when it comes to staging, decorating and

preparing for the holidays. Preparing for the holidays is always stressful, especially when hosting the entire family. The last thing on your mind is decorating the table. Don’t worry. Mary is here to help.

The Table 12

BISMARCK MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2017

BM: Mary, can you tell us how you decorated this table for the harvest season? Mary: Living in North Dakota, we have the pleasure of having all four seasons to appreciate. I love using nature and bringing it into the home. You see in the table, I was inspired by fall. Using different sized pumpkins and woods, even incorporating antlers into the mix, to add depth and dimension to the table. I also think it is important to add your own family touches. At home, I use old pieces from my parents' and grandparents' dishes, and serving pieces. I love using heirlooms as a focal point, especially with family. BM: What colors are in style this year to use for decorating for the holidays? Mary: Oh well, grays are still very in this year, and believe it or not, orange is a very hot color for the season, and it’s always great to add a pop of color. The blues have started to come back. They pair well with the gray palette as well. BM: Mary, what is your style? How do you decorate for the holidays at your house? Mary: I keep it as natural as I can, using the seasons and nature throughout my table and home. I like bringing the outside onto our table. It is important to be relaxed and have fun with it when decorating. BISMARCK-MAGAZINE.COM

It’s OK to talk about it.

Sponsored by Mid Dakota Clinic

Dryness. Itching. Irritation. Painful intercourse. Stress incontinence. Women may face some or all of these issues during and after menopause, following removal of the ovaries, or during and after treatment for cancer. Vaginal changes due to aging, declining hormone levels and some medical treatments can seriously disrupt a woman’s life, causing discomfort, lack of sexual pleasure, pain during sex, and urine leakage when sneezing, coughing or laughing.

symptoms and your options for treatment.” If you’re experiencing menopausal or postmenopausal symptoms, you’re not alone. There are approximately 64 million postmenopausal women in the U.S., and approximately 1.3 million women reach menopause every year. The mean age for menopause is 51. Up to 50 percent of menopausal women suffer symptoms of dryness, itching, discomfort and/or stress incontinence.

“Women may think it’s just something they have to live with,” says Dr. Shannon Bradley, a board-certified OB/GYN at Mid Dakota Clinic in Bismarck and Minot. “As they begin to experience symptoms, they might think ‘that’s just the way it is’ and may be reluctant to talk about it, even to their doctor. But vaginal health is an important part of a woman’s overall health. When women stop producing estrogen, the vaginal walls become thinner, drier and weaker. The resulting symptoms can cause pain, avoidance of intimacy, and affect a woman’s self-esteem as well as her physical health. But it’s not something you ‘just have to live with.’ The first step is talking to your doctor about your

In the past, the usual treatment has been a vaginal cream that contains estrogen. But estrogen cream has drawbacks: it’s expensive, messy, and must be applied frequently. It can cost as much as $350 every two to three months, and may not be covered by insurance. It also carries a risk of side effects, and can’t be used by breast cancer survivors. With 250,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer every year, and a five-year survival rate of 90 percent, that means a substantial number of patients are left without options for their symptoms. Now Dr. Bradley is offering a new non-hormonal, non-surgical laser treatment that provides lasting benefits for menopausal women, including breast cancer survivors.

Symptoms: vaginal dryness, itching and irritation, painful intercourse, stress incontinence Advantages of MonaLisa Touch: non-hormonal, non-surgical, 3 treatments - 5 minutes each

BISMARCK MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2017

MonaLisa Touch is a new rejuvenation treatment that involves using a laser to deliver controlled pulses of energy to vaginal tissue, creating microscopic holes in the vaginal walls. This process stimulates the body to heal the holes by producing collagen, rehydrating and restoring thickness and firmness to the vaginal tissue. It’s a simple in-office procedure that takes just five minutes. It’s virtually painless and requires no anesthesia. Patients report just a slight vibration or tugging sensation. Regular activities can be resumed immediately, and sexual activity can be resumed in two to three days. Dr. Bradley is the only OB/GYN in North Dakota offering this new treatment. “I’m so excited to offer my patients this option,” she says. “Recent studies and our experience have shown significant improvement in the vaginal tissue after the first treatment, with relief of symptoms of vaginal pain and urinary incontinence.” She notes that, while insurance doesn’t cover the treatment, it costs less than hormonal treatment over the long run and offers long-lasting benefits. The cost of the treatment at Mid Dakota Clinic is $500, which is substantially lower than the $800 to $1,000 charged elsewhere. Patients usually receive an initial course of three treatments over 12 weeks. For most patients, the benefits can be maintained with annual treatments.

“In 20 years of practicing medicine, all I could offer my patients was an expensive, messy hormonal cream,” says Dr. Bradley. “Now we have a procedure that is effective, non-invasive, painless, and takes just a few minutes. In my medical experience, this is quite an amazing opportunity for menopausal women. This process is new and innovative now, but I think it will soon become the standard of care, and for good reason.” Patients are calling it "life-changing." I was experiencing extreme vaginal atrophy and unable to utilize any form of hormone therapy. It was so bad that even walking was uncomfortable and there was a danger of the delicate tissue tearing with regular activity. I was out of options locally, so when I heard about Dr. Bradley offering the MonaLisa Touch procedure, I decided to check into it. I am so grateful that I did! I noticed a remarkable difference right after the first treatment and I’m happy to be walking and working comfortably again as a travel nurse. Dr. Bradley has an amazing bedside manner and staff. I’m telling people this is the best money I’ve ever spent." – Anonymous Patient “Women with these symptoms need to know that they don’t ‘just have to live with it,’” says Dr. Bradley. “The MonaLisa Touch gives them a great new option for alleviating their symptoms. The first step is to talk about it.”

Profile Provides One-on-One Coaching to Help You Stay on Track story: Olivia Heintz | photo: Sanford Profile

You have decided to make a lifestyle change. It’s not going to be easy and with the holidays around the corner, it’s important to start building up your confidence to stay on track. Profile by Sanford knows that it takes motivation and support to make lasting change, which is why we pair members with certified Profile coaches to help them succeed. Individualized coaching is what makes Profile different. Our coaches share one common purpose: to partner with you to maximize your potential at any given juncture of your health journey and help you reach your goals.

Staying Motivated Making a lasting lifestyle change can be a long, arduous process and staying motivated can be tough. Everyone hits a bump in the road during their journey, but luckily – you’re not in this alone! When times get tough, you can use your coach as a net to make sure you don’t lose sight of what prompted you to start this journey and stray away from your plan. Coaches understand that motivation can fluctuate and are ready to help 38

you get excited about your health. In fact, findings indicate that members that attend coaching sessions regularly experience more success that those that do not, further illustrating the importance on building a relationship with your Profile coach. Profile members routinely note that coaches serve as positive and supportive influences during their journey by listening and addressing any questions that a member may have. And, let’s be honest, who doesn’t need more positivity in their life?!

A Culture of Accountability Have you ever recruited a friend or family member to help keep you accountable, only to find out they aren’t very good at it? Think of your coach as an accountability partner who is always in your corner. Coaches identify your goals, help you unleash your potential, and hold you accountable for your actions. They are champions of your potential, sounding boards for your struggles, and challengers of your blind spots. Ultimately, coaches want to see you succeed and they know that holding you accountable is part of the process.

BISMARCK MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2017

As a coach, a few of my favorite conversations to have with members this time of year revolve around how they plan to get through the holidays. What goals will they set? What challenges are they anticipating? Most importantly, how do they plan to be successful this holiday season?

A Whole New Lifestyle Embrace a greater self-acceptance, identify and rid yourself of the naysayers, and be the most important person in your life. Start saying “no” to unnecessary liquid calories at happy hour and get your friends together to go for a walk. Begin offering to bring a veggie tray to the next gathering and simply state, “No thank you, I’m not hungry,” when second servings are presented. It is liberating to make decisions by yourself, for yourself without feeling guilt or shame for not complying with the wishes of others. The benefits of coaching are undeniable. Coaches are ready to walk with you as you invest in your health. Are you ready to take that journey?

Bismarck Magazine wanted to feature some of the area's local butchers so that our readers could expand their holiday cooking from traditional turkeys to items like prime rib and short ribs. When we started our journey about five months ago, looking into the meat market of the Bismarck Mandan community, the carnivore lovers' market choices were pretty limited. How that meat map has changed in just a few months! We have since welcomed two more butchers to the area. Here, we introduce you to four different meat markets. They all have their own niche but traits they have in common include secret spices and making their business a family affair.

The unique bottle openers, decanters, glasses, cards, wine bags and so much more are items you just won’t find at a department store. Our specialty cheese section helps compliment your fine wine palate. We have the perfect cheeses and meats that usually are not available in your local grocery store. During the holidays we have select caviar and salmon available. Our bestselling ten, twelve and fifteen-year-old cheeses are a true delight! Williquors was designed for you, easy to shop, sixteen clearly marked wide isles, full size shopping carts and so much more. Our main desire is to have more wine, spirit and beer products available than our customers could imagine and to never stop our search for more. We are located at 3025 Yorktown Drive in Bismarck. Helping Hands

By Bailley Hauf Photos provided by Lynn Speral

Finding joy in difficulty starts with service to others. As the holiday season begins, the perfect opportunity arises to show gratitude by taking action on behalf of those in unfortunate circumstances. This truly is the time of year to focus on joy, but with the number of natural disasters wreaking havoc on many parts of the nation, the continued need for help cannot be ignored.

First to mind in the most difficult of situations, the American Red Cross of the Dakotas works to help not only those of this region--North Dakota, South Dakota, and ten counties in northwest Minnesota--but, deploys many volunteers and workers to places like Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, 48

and Florida to help aid in hurricane relief efforts. The deployed assist those affected by the hurricanes through an offering of their time and assistance. The CEO of the Dakota Region, Lynn Speral, oversees many of these efforts. “We have a team that works with the deployment,” Speral stated. “When Hurricane Harvey hit we knew that was going to be a major response and we knew that there would be a call for a lot of volunteers, so we conducted training.”

to the hurricanes. For this effort, the real commitment comes when those who are trained are asked to commit a minimum of two weeks working in a designated area.

Training for deployment to the affected areas includes basic information on how to help feed and shelter those who are displaced due

“We trained 250 individuals, and from there people determined whether or not they were interested in deploying” Speral said. “We deployed 110

BISMARCK MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2017

individuals (volunteers). In addition to that, we deployed six of our staff, which is roughly a third of our total staff.” Among recent volunteers was Shawn Burgad of Bismarck. Burgad had previously held a board member position for the West Dakota Chapter of the American Red Cross. With hopes of learning more about all that goes on during relief efforts, and with a calling to help in a more hands-on way, he attended a meeting. When the request came for volunteers interested in deploying for the Red Cross, Burgad made the decision right there. Despite uncertainty with his own job at home, Burgad left for Houston within a week. As a general volunteer he worked to set up and tear down shelters as well as serve food to those affected by the hurricane. Referring to them as “ERV’s” (Emergency Response Vehicles), Burgad described his opportunity with the mobile feeding units. Three different times he was able to “get out into the communities and see first hand some of the hardships and destruction.” He met a lot of people “trying to make everything out of what they’ve got left.” To make any relief effort a success requires a high number of donated resources. Donations come in the form of time for volunteering, such as the work Burgad participated in, as well as the money needed for supporting volunteers. Obtaining the resources needed for sheltering and feeding displaced or affected individuals is also dependent on

donations. Likewise, according to Speral, even the American Red Cross workforce is over 90% volunteer. “We (the Dakota Region) have five emergency ERVs and we deployed all five of ours down south. Costs associated with deployment run $1,650 per volunteer for two weeks, plus $300 a day to operate the truck providing food to neighborhoods," Speral stated.

Everyone can play an instrumental part in helping others, and at the same time, find joy in the midst of a difficult time.

As expected, the 6:00 am to 10:00 pm work days of the volunteers are long, but Burgard described them as well worth the effort. He believes the needs of the affected far outweigh the difficulties associated with volunteering. “[I got] to know some of the clients personally, and you can see it in their eyes. You know they have families and kids. And a lot of people didn’t have insurance for things like this,” Burgad said. "Every day for the volunteers is about trying to find additional resources for these families." Essential to the mission, Burgard and the other volunteers helped the American Red Cross work side by side with other organizations that

can provide other assistance where needed. With every intention to participate in future efforts, Burgad recommended others get involved as well. Whether it be a deployment such as his or something closer to home, the need is great for volunteers. “You hate to see that happen to any community. It’s hard to watch it on TV and just sit and watch when you feel like you could do something," says Burgard. He admited that it was hard to leave for 14 days, but found the experience life-changing and humbling. He feels this is likely true for every volunteer. Efforts such as Burgad’s volunteer deployment play an important role in the American Red Cross mission. However, a huge piece of the equation is something that everyone can do from home. “We are mandated by Congress to be the response organzation for disasters and we do not receive funding from the federal or state government for our response efforts,” Speral stated. “All of our programing for disaster response is through donations from individuals, corporations, and the United Way.” In other words, there are numerous ways to be generous. Everyone can play an instrumental part in helping others, and at the same time, find joy in the midst of a difficult time. To donate, volunteer or receive more information on how to help with relief efforts as well as efforts in the Dakota region, contact the American Red Cross at their website, redcross.org, or by calling 701-364-1800. REAListic

ways to stay

Healthy during the Holidays H

Are you HUNGRY? Yes - EAT! Don’t starve yourself in

anticipation for a big meal or holiday party later in the day.. Instead, eat a small nutrient dense snack now. This will help keep eep your blood sugar in check, your energy up, and prevent overeating later on.

No- DON’T EAT! Listen to your hunger cues, don’t eat just because it’s there.

Drink WATER

Keep water with you at all times! Alternate a glass of water with alcoholic or sugary beverages. You’ll stay hydrated, feel better, and consume less calories. A good guideline is half your body weight in ounces each day (example: a 150 lb person should drink about 75oz of water).

CHOOSE your Splurges Pick your favorites and really ta take the time to enjoy eating them! A few bites of your favorite foods are worth it .

Focus on QUALITY

Fruits, veggies, lean protein, and complex carbs - work them into your diet each day. Add fruit with breakfast and a salad with lunch.

PLAN Ahead

Failing to plan is planning to fail. Have a game plan ready for day one back into your routine. Whether it is a crockpot meal, something you have frozen or a go-to easy healthy meal.

Get MOVING

HIIT workouts - short bursts of high intensity intervals - are a great go-to workout option when strapped for time. Alternate between easy/rest and or total-body strength moves. 20 minutes of HIIT training is all it takes to blast calories and rev up your metabolism.

ENJOY the Season Slow down and savor conversations and time spent with family and friends. Experience the magic of the season like kids do. Find satisfaction in time spent together rather than in food or drinks.

It’s YOUR Health Sometimes you have to say NO. It’s okay to say no to a holiday invite or the extra serving - it’s your time and your health!
