att and Sandy McMerty are not good with limitations.

Having a child with Down’s Syndrome inspired them

to look to create a place where individuals with disabilities can have a viable future. Little did they know, however, it would be through coffee. Without a business plan, feasibility study or even experience in the business, the McMertys set out to take on the venture that would provide their son, Christian, with a place he could one day call his own.

“He already tells everyone he meets that he owns a coffee shop,” Sandy says.

Even though 14-year old-Christian is still too young to actually work there, the McMertys are happy to let him make that claim. The Gifted Bean is located inside the Bismarck Public Library and has been owned and operated by the McMertys since 2014.

“We have always carried a certain crazy around with us anyway,” Sandy says. “We started seeing so many role models of people with disabilities owning their own business and Matt and I asked three questions: “Will it be good for our son? How nuts will the rest of our family think we are? What’s the investment going to be? That was our decision making process.”

Salt Cave

Y

ou’ve heard of “no shirt, no shoes, no service,” but “white socks required’?

The unusual mandate is one that an innovative Bismarck couple asks of the guests who visit their Salt Cave Relaxation and Wellness Center, located at 1001 West Interstate Avenue, Suite 120. Using an age old Halotherapy environment, visitors enjoy a micro-climate simulation of a natural salt cave. Pat and Agata Zidon, a Polish-American, feel bringing their cultural heritage was a necessary supplement to a community that may be in need of a new method of easing stress and boosting immune systems.

Agata said that when she came to Bismarck in 2011 from Poland, she was simply looking for a job, preferably in aviation. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), however, hires only U.S. citizens, and that sent Agata into researching other options, including spas.

“I was really looking for a niche,” Agata said. “I wanted to do something different than nails and hair, and I went back 32

to my roots from the salt caves in Poland. I found there was nothing like this in Bismarck, or Fargo. The closest one was in Minneapolis. I started working with a designer, who is also from Poland and we able to work out the details.”

The model Agata wanted to replicate was of the Wieliczka Salt Mine outside of Krakow, which houses a hotel and a respiratory clinic within the cave, some 400 plus feet below ground, with the mine itself going more than 1,000 feet deep. After completing a business plan and securing some funding, the Zidon’s began the search for a place that could house six tons of Himalayan salt. Himalayan salt is said to be the purest of all salts found on earth.

“This salt is formed deep, without pollutants, and is deep mined,” Agata said. “It (the salt) is mined by hand, without any heavy equipment and taken out by mule so it has no impurities. “So the salt, which is an element itself, from this Himalayan cave derives its ‘purity’ from the existence of 83 other naturally occurring elements locked within it that somehow cause chemical reactions beneficial to human

health.” This is what brings about its therapy advantages.

Salt is hygroscopic and it absorbs water molecules from the air along with the pollutants and positive ions. Then when it is warmed up, it gives off negative ions and purified air.”

The climate-controlled salt cave in Bismarck maintains low humidity and 7273 degrees for a comfortable therapeutic setting. Agata said she educates people on the benefits of salt therapy, and cautions that it is not a replacement for any medical prescriptions that may be advised by doctors.

Agata indicated the cave has helped babies as young as 5 months, people with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and even a child on the autism spectrum who finds the cave a relaxing environment. Agata has added couples massages and yoga classes in the cave as more niche services to attract guests. Plans are to open a second location, possibly in the eastern part of North Dakota, which will bring balanced ions to places like Fargo or Grand Forks.

“That is the purpose of the cave, to be helpful to others.”

“I have a lot of elderly who are so fed up with taking medicine for everything,” Agata says. “We tell people this is not a substitute for medication. We’ve had such positive feedback from people of all ages and I am too down to earth to believe in something that doesn’t work, so I wouldn’t want to sell something that doesn’t benefit anyone

As for the white sock requirement? Agata indicates that is necessary to maintain the purity of the salt cave. “This is not a voodoo thing, Agata said. “It’s all based in chemistry and physics.”

ocal event planner, Renne Murrish, owner of Signature Events, took a break from the busyness of party planning to chat all about wedding trends, etiquette and must haves for 2016.

One thing you must know about Renne is that she is a stellar planner and organizer extraordinaire. She started Signature Events two short years ago, but has been corporate planning for fifteen years. From galas to office parties and now weddings, she has planned it all and now wants to offer some advice to local brides and grooms to be about their special day.

BM: Renne, many people may feel a wedding planner is unnecessary, or they can’t quite fit it in their budget, how do you stress the importance of a planner to your couples?

Renne: You know I get that question quite often, many people usually ask “why do I need a planner when I can do it myself?”

Often times those are the people that end up calling me later.

Now obviously I am going to say to try to fit a planner into your budget, but in the long run it saves you so much time, worry and stress.

When you have a planner, you as the couple, or parents of the bride and groom, do not worry about a thing. I like to think of myself as a buffer between the vendors and couple.

I take care of the overlooked tax added to the catering bill, or make sure “Auntie Sue doesn’t run into Uncle Bob,” and I make sure each desired photo you want is captured by your photographer.

The day of your wedding should be about you, your partner and your family, not wondering if the flowers arrived or if the DJ is set up in the correct spot or checking if the limo knows where to pick you up. It is my job to make sure your day is perfectly seamless, worry free, and you and all your guests can enjoy this special day.

BM: Let’s talk about gifts…As a guest how much do you spend on the gift?

Renne: Oooo, this one is always a little tough because you never want to look cheap, but you also do not want to go overboard either. An average rule of thumb is between $50-$100 on a gift depending on your relationship with the couple. If a price tag is the issue, personalized gifts are always a good idea.

BM: As an event/wedding planner you are exposed to a lot of different couples and themes, what are some common trends you see for 2016?

Renne: Videographer! You see more and more couples hiring videographers and I think it’s a great way to capture the essence of the day. In my opinion, this is something that you should definitely add into your budget, as bride and groom the day is such a blur, and having a video gives you the opportunity to look back.

Dessert bars are another huge trend, not really new, but the idea of not always having cake is. I have seen a lot of weddings now, that the couple picks their favorite things rather than a traditional cake. This is your day, if you like pie, have pie, it’s fun to see people change it up.

BM: What is one piece of advice you would give to the bride and/or groom before the wedding?

Renne: Well, individually speaking, to every bride I tell her to enjoy the bridal shower, the parties and most importantly her time with friends. You really don’t get that time again, and the as much as the wedding prep is about the couple it’s also some of the last times you get to be with your best friends.

For the grooms, I tell them to first be patient with your future bride, she’s under a lot of stress, but also to ask her about her vision and be involved. Brides often feel like their groom doesn’t often care about the details of the wedding, so give your opinion or at least ask her what you can do to help. All she wants is for you to be a part of the process.

But for the couples, I must say this, take ten minutes after the ceremony by yourselves and reflect on the day and what just happened. Sneak away for just a few minutes during the reception and just be together; you only get one wedding day, cherish it.

Whether an expert fisherman or simply a beginner, Dakota Tackle has everything necessary and knows along with secret tips and tricks to have the best catch of the summer. Wade Anderson, owner and store manager of Dakota Tackle, treats every customer as family. He is the best in the business when it comes to outdoor activities, especially fishing.

I walked into the shop off Bismarck Expressway on a cold, dreary morning to chat with Wade about the best fishing techniques and secret spots for this summer’s fishing excursions, but what I got was even better. In the corner of his shop were a group of older gentlemen swapping fishing stories and tips. In the other corner, a father and son were picking out a new fishing pole for the summer season. In the front of the store stood Wade, chatting with two customers about the best lure to use. The atmosphere clearly indicated this store was not only a business for Wade, but a passion. He beamed with pride as he showed his customers products and checked in with the gentlemen in the back.

What is now Dakota Tackle used to be Wade’s father’s RV family business. Wade was always into fishing and loved everything about it, so his dad let him set up a small corner of fishing supplies in the back of his store. As the RV business began to slow down, Wade’s fishing supply business began to grow and he slowly took over the store. Wade is now the very proud owner of Dakota Tackle and has been for many years. He loves helping his community find what they need and do what they love.
