Jaylyn discovered her passion for dance at the age of four. She began her training in ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, and contemporary dance at Dancemakers Studio and started competing in regional and national dance competitions. She joined the Classical Dance program as a scholarship awardee and participated in its annual Christmas and spring Dance productions. Jaylyn enrolled in the Sankofa Company Omega class in her sophomore year and joined Traditional Music & Dance a year after. She participated in Sankofa productions of Yaa Asantewaa & The Battle for The Golden Stool, MAYA, The Phenomenal Woman, and Oleto, The Albin Of Vencalle. Jaylyn gives back to the community through volunteer outreach activities. She has worked with SELAH (Serving Everyone Living with and Affected by HIV & Aids), where she helps to organize food, toys, clothing, and shoes for the needy. Jaylyn plans to attend college in the fall to study business management, with a career in entrepreneurship for community development. Friends and family describe Jaylyn as an introvert by nature, but a consummate performer on stage, almost unrecognizable - she likes to keep it that way. She selected the Adinkra symbol Sankofa (Return and get; the importance of learning from the past to prepare for the future), because it puts into perspective her present personal challenges and growth. It reflects her accomplishments and her mistakes. It identifies with clarity, the importance of knowing where she comes from and how to apply that knowledge in the future.
A MESSAGE FROM FAMILY

Riley came to Bishop McNamara as a sophomore in 2022 with a football scholarship. During his first year of playing football he sustained a groin injury that sidelined him for four games. After recovering from that, he was ready to get back on the field and play again. Unbelievably, he tore his ACL and meniscus, which caused him to miss the rest of the season and the entire next season. This was devastating to him. The recovery from these injuries was brutal. He began to look for activities off the field. He heard about the Sankofa/Traditional African Music & Dance program. He came to the shows in the past and it caught his eye, but he was nervous to perform. His girlfriend influenced him to join. He auditioned, made a commitment to it, and became a drummer. His first performance as a drummer was in the production MAYA, The Phenomenal Woman Throughout his years at Bishop McNamara, he was a member of the football team. He plans to graduate and attend North Carolina Central University. He will be majoring in business administration. His life stand is to always put God first and go after what he wants in life. Riley selected Wawa Aba as his Adinkra symbol.
Hey Riley! Just a little reminder that you’ve got incredible strength inside you to chase your dreams, tackle any challenges, and craft the amazing life you desire! Surround yourself with incredible people who lift you up and inspire you to be your best self—because you deserve it buddy! And always remember, we believe in you 100% and will be your biggest cheerleaders, shouting from the sidelines! So go for it, Superstar! We love you so much!

Madison has been steeped in dance since the tender age of four. This spring, she will be on stage with Sankofa in its production of Oleto, The Albin Of Vencalle, embracing a newfound love of African dance, a form she first experienced her sophomore year and immediately knew she loved. Outside of dance, Madison is one of the school’s most charismatic students. She has been very active in so many organizations: My Hair, My Crown Club, International Food Club, ASL Club, Fashion Club, SiStem Club, and the Black Cultural Alliance. Her academic work is no different as shown by her commitment to the National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, and multiple honor and AP classes. She does look to the future and sees a path in higher education, indicative of ambition and a determination to pursue the highest values. She targets institutions such as New York University, the University of North Carolina Greensboro, Temple University, Howard University, and the University of Pittsburgh. She will major in nursing and minor in psychology, marrying her love for caregiving with insight into the human mind. Madison’s commitment is unshakable, both at school and personally, which brings out her desire to pursue with determination each of her goals. She wants the world to know her hard work and resilience will bring her to success. Madison selected Nyansapo as her Adinkra symbol.
Dear Maddie, it seems like yesterday you were starting the first day of high school and now you are receiving your diploma. It’s been a joy to watch you grow and achieve so much these past four years. Never stop believing in yourself. The road ahead will have its share of obstacles, but you’re incredibly ambitious and strong to overcome anything that comes your way. We’re extremely proud of you and can’t wait to see the next chapter in your life. Always aim high, work hard, and care deeply about what you believe in. And, when you stumble, keep faith. And, when you’re knocked down, get right back up and never listen to anyone who says you can’t or shouldn’t go on.

As you prepare to close out this chapter and begin the next, always remember: if you can conceive it you can achieve it, you are more than a conqueror, you indeed have the mind of Christ, it is through HIM that all things are possible and your family will always be here for you.
