DAY OF GIVING

Dear Fenwick Family,

The 2019 -2020 school year could be a contemporary version of Charles Dickens, “A Tale of Two Cities.” The year kicked off great momentum hosting over 1,000 current families, alumni, and friends of Fenwick at numerous planned community celebrations. The Building on Excellence initiative was launched, engaging 130 constituents to help us form areas of focus and move forward strategically to improve every aspect of a Fenwick education. The volleyball team captured a state championship title, our annual Day of Giving garnered over 500 gifts from passionate stakeholders, students explored their faith through a slate of retreats and we welcomed hundreds of grandparents to share the Eucharist at Grandparents Thanksgiving Mass. Winter brought us exciting sports, the 23rd Athletic Hall of Fame Induction, and one special night for Fenwick to recognize our service and military personnel. As we broached spring, our calendar was bursting with special engagements, inaugural ministry service projects, a Gala, and traditional year end activities to honor our graduating seniors. Everything came to a halt with the arrival of a global pandemic putting our school, our community, and our country in a tailspin of unprecedented events that today, we are still working to overcome. In March, the state mandated school shut down projected us into a completely altered state of educating and would profoundly affect our overall operational functions. Administration and faculty immediately focused on the most important responsibility of creating a seamless, remote learning environment for our students pivoting virtual classrooms via Zoom, online office hours, and digital assignments. Through it all, teachers and students adapted to the changes, and the remaining months of the school year became a time for growth academically, personally, and socially, but operating in a virtual environment. While the school building was void of faculty and students, a dedicated workforce was in full combat to clean and disinfect every niche and corner so that upon our return to school, the building was free of any contaminants. Spring sports, socials, and year end events, especially Baccalaureate and Graduation were cancelled or reinvented. Health protocols challenged our ability to host any large gathering but the creativity and cooperation of administration, faculty, and families to devise acceptable solutions culminated in events that allowed our families safe engagement, emotional connection and the reverence and recognition deserved. Highlighted, was the resiliency and pride the Class of 2020 and their families demonstrated throughout this unprecedented time! No doubt the 2019-2020 school year will be remembered in our school’s history as one of the most difficult, but with the tremendous support, love, prayers and good will provided by our Fenwick Family, the year was able to end on a positive note. As we look back on the past year, we have many reasons to be thankful and we can be proud of all that was accomplished as we persevered in demonstrating our school motto: “To reach the heights, aim high!” May God’s blessings be with us all in these uncertain times. Yours in Service, Blane M. Collison Principal

YEAR IN REVIEW

FAITH & SERVICE • 20 days were dedicated to retreats for students, faculty, and staff to deepen their relationship with Christ and each other through prayer, faith sharing, and the sacraments. Each retreat is an essential part of students’ formation as Christians and our Talons: Faith, Integrity, Compassion, Service. • 5,388 service hours were completed by students during the shortened school year, — shy of the 10,000 service hours typically logged by Fenwick students during the full year supporting hundreds of agencies and locations. • 600 volunteers at 41 locations in 11 cities planned for 1 Day of Encounter to put their faith in action and serve the large community hoping to meet other’s needs and spread God’s love. • 25 minutes every Tuesday, students, teachers, and campus ministers gathered for Jammin’ with Jesus to share lunch, fellowship and Christian music. • 40+ student leaders facilitated retreats for underclassmen and peers to execute, lead, and share personal experiences through faith explorations. • 400 meals were packed monthly for those seeking daily sustenance at St. Vincent de Paul. Since inception, volunteers of Talon Thursday have packed and delivered an estimated 25,000+ meals.

Our top need every year is to bridge the gap between tuition and the true cost to educate the young men and women in our community. The 2019-2020 tuition for one student was $10,525, but the real cost to educate each student was $14,525, a gap of $4,000. Additionally, your support impacts co-curriculars, technology enhancements, professional development, campus upkeep/renovations and other priority needs.

FENWICK FORWARD

FROM THE

DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT The Fenwick Family moniker resonates now more than ever, not only for me but for all our community members so deeply invested in advancing our mission. While I physically left Bishop Fenwick High School six years ago, my feelings for the Fenwick Family never left. I am overjoyed to return to Fenwick as the Director of Development. There is nothing quite like family. I gained more appreciation for the power of family during my first stint at Fenwick from 2011-2014. During that time, I got married and dreamed of the day we would welcome children to the world. It was also during this time I learned a great deal from my predecessor, Mike Raiff. He stressed the importance of building relationships and solidifying our community’s belief we are the Fenwick Family, connected through an eternal bond. I was excited to be a part of the vision he set forth and could not wait to play my part. However, God had other plans, as we moved to Washington, DC, for my wife’s career. After spending two years in Washington, DC, where I worked at Marymount University, and nearly four years in Raleigh, NC, where I worked at Cardinal Gibbons High School, and two children later, we found our way back to southwest Ohio. And, I found my way back to Fenwick. It is amazing what has been accomplished over the last six years. Especially under the leadership of Blane Collison since his arrival in July 2017. Most notably his direction, along with support from 130 community members, to lead the Building On Excellence initiative in 2019-2020. This initiative will be the catalyst for future decisions and prepare our community for a forthcoming strategic planning effort. In addition to Blane’s leadership, I commend Mike for his visionary efforts to direct the Development Office and recognize the incredible efforts of my colleagues – Robin Blank, Ginger Bruggeman ’67, and Andrea Wyatt. Bishop Fenwick High School is committed to a bright future for the Fenwick Family, despite these unprecedented times. Upon returning to Fenwick I have a newfound appreciation for the power of family, not only because my wife and I now have two children, but because I am re-immersed in how invested the Fenwick Family is to advancing our mission, especially during adverse times, with their time, talent, and treasure. As it states in Proverbs 17:17… “A friend loves at all times, and a relative is born to help in adversity.” As our community embarks on uncertain times due to COVID-19, three things will hold true. One, Bishop Fenwick High School will continue to deliver mission-driven experiences to transform student lives. Two, the outcomes of the Building On Excellence initiative will be linked to our mission-based decisions over the next few years. And, three, it is your philanthropic support that enables our community to provide such transformative experiences. Thank you for your commitment to make Fenwick part of YOUR FAMILY! I know my family is ecstatic to be back and will be investing in Fenwick’s devotion to faith, compassion, integrity, and service. Please also feel free to contact me directly, as the Development Office welcomes the opportunity to strengthen your relationship within the Fenwick Family. God Bless and Go Falcons,
