Mission Statement Bishop Amat Memorial High School is a four-year coeducational Archdiocesan Catholic high school. The mission of the school is to form a faith-filled community and to provide a quality education that addresses the needs of a culturally and academically diverse student body. The comprehensive instructional program flows from a college preparatory curriculum that empowers students to recognize their potential and to meet educational and life challenges in the future. The school, working in partnership with parents and the community, promotes education in Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge by preparing students to embrace Gospel values, to respect themselves and others, to become life-long learners, and to contribute positively to the community.

leadership

Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends, With gratitude for your generous support, I am pleased to share this Annual Report edition of The Amat Tradition for 2022-2023. This publication serves as a summary overview of our fiscal standing over the past year while highlighting our stewardship efforts in maintaining the mission and ministry of the Bishop Amat High School experience for current and future Lancers. As evidenced by the pages that follow, our school is blessed with a sound financial footing despite the ever-increasing challenges that come with providing an outstanding educational program for students at a comparatively affordable cost for parents and guardians. Through careful oversight and with the collaboration of a dedicated staff and consultative council, our school continues to meet these challenges while remaining fiscally responsible and accountable to our stakeholders. To that end, I encourage you to take a few moments to peruse the enclosed revenue and expenditure summaries which reflect an operating surplus of $189,700. While this is an achievement worth noting, of greater significance is that the figures included in this report demonstrate the integral role our philanthropic partners play in bridging the gap between operational income and associated expenses. With fiftytwo named scholarships (over two-thirds of which have been created by alumni or the parents of Bishop Amat graduates), an endowment trust fund, and the contributions provided by six charitable foundation grants, our financial resources have enabled us to maintain the quality, comprehensive Catholic education that defines the Bishop Amat experience. Although Bishop Amat offers one of the lowest tuition rates of schools both within and neighboring the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the reality is over 40% of our families require some form of financial assistance in order to provide their daughter or son with a Bishop Amat education. As such, in addition to the overwhelming generosity of our foundation donors, we are indebted to well over 1,000 alumni, parents, past parents, and friends of the school who have so thoughtfully made a contribution to Bishop Amat over the past year as listed beginning on page 6 of this report. The kindness exhibited by way of these donations is a blessing for which I and our entire school community are so grateful, especially in light of the ongoing need to support families for whom a Bishop Amat education would not be possible without the assistance from our partners and supporters of our mission and vision. As you make your end-of-year charitable giving considerations, please know that a gift of any amount would be a most welcomed and appreciated gesture that I can promise will go toward sustaining the tradition of excellence that is Bishop Amat High School. I wish you and your families a joyous Christmas and a happy and healthy 2024! God bless,

Richard P. Beck President

leadership

Dear Lancer Alumni, Parents, and Friends: I am grateful to serve as the principal of Bishop Amat Memorial High School for the 2023-2024 school year. This academic year follows the conventional rhythms of a typical school cycle, yet we are engaged in two compelling initiatives that I wish to spotlight. As you peruse this report, you will discover that our esteemed school maintains a robust financial position. We are actively exploring strategies to address the unique challenges confronting private high schools in Los Angeles County. Your partnership is crucial in ensuring the continuity of our commitment to delivering an exceptional Catholic education to students in southern California. In the previous year, Bishop Amat undertook the Standards of Excellence self-study protocol to renew accreditation with both the Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA) and Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). The newly introduced protocol, in which we were selected to beta-test, has presented challenges while ushering school accreditation into a fully digital realm. A year and a half of surveys, critical examination, and discovery affirms that Bishop Amat Memorial High School consistently provides an outstanding educational experience for the over one thousand students who attend annually. The self-study has identified four key areas to enhance over the next five years, making Bishop Amat even more dynamic. In the “Mission and Catholic Identity” domain, our faculty will purposefully integrate Scripture and Catholic intellectual tradition into lesson planning across all academic content areas. In the “Governance and Leadership” domain, we are crafting a Vision Statement to accompany our Mission Statement, guiding school leadership in decision-making for the future. Within the “Academic Excellence” domain, teachers will utilize standardized testing data to tailor instruction to address specific student needs and deficiencies. Lastly, in the “Operational Vitality” domain, a Strategic Plan will be developed, focusing on technology, facilities, and maintenance, guiding us into the latter half of the 2020s. Faculty and staff are poised to bring these components of our Educational Improvement Plan to fruition. Our second update revolves around our objective to introduce a credible and accessible Dual Enrollment program to Bishop Amat’s offerings. In California, dual enrollment enables high school students to concurrently enroll in college courses alongside their high school curriculum. We are nearing an agreement with Mt. SAC to establish this program on Bishop Amat’s campus. Students will have the opportunity to take college courses through Mt. SAC after school, earning transferable college units. This valuable opportunity will be provided at no cost and will enhance the value of a Bishop Amat education. Though the memorandum of understanding is pending, we are confident about making this program a reality for the 2024-2025 school year. Thank you for your steadfast support of Bishop Amat Lancers. Our students are the shining stars of our endeavors, continually astounding me with their daily efforts and accomplishments. In Christ,

Gabriel Escovar Principal

scholarship dollars Keeping our tuition affordable for those who want to be a part of the Amat Family has always been both a focus and a strength of our school. Due to the condition of the economy, many families are unable to send a child to Bishop Amat High School or are unable to have a child continue to attend the school. The primary reason for student withdrawal is the inability of the family to pay the tuition. It is very important that Bishop Amat remain accessible and affordable to the families whom we serve. To that end, the school continues to pursue scholarship opportunities for our students. Please consider making a donation to help a future Lancer obtain the same gift that you received.

Gifts in Kind In addition to cash gifts, many generous individuals and businesses contribute goods or “in-kind gifts” to Bishop Amat during the year. Many of these gifts are made in support of our Annual Extravaganza, Scholarship Benefit Dinner, and Golf Tournament. Contributions such as electronics, vacation rentals, sporting event tickets, and printing support are other ways to assist the school. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to those individuals and businesses who have contributed to Bishop Amat during the 2022-2023 school year.
