Mission Statement

Bishop Amat Memorial High School is a four-year coeducational Archdiocesan Catholic high school. The mission of the school is to form a faith-filled community and to provide a quality education that addresses the needs of a culturally and academically diverse student body. The comprehensive instructional program flows from a college preparatory curriculum that empowers students to recognize their potential and to meet educational and life challenges in the future. The school, working in partnership with parents and the community, promotes education in Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge by preparing students to embrace Gospel values, to respect themselves and others, to become life-long learners, and to contribute positively to the community.

a message from leadership

Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends,

It is my pleasure to share with all stakeholders this Annual Report edition of The Amat Tradition for the 2021-2022 school year. As evidenced by the contents of this publication, The Bishop Amat High School family has so much for which to be grateful. Our school’s mission and ministry are strengthened by those who support and value the tradition of excellence that defines the Bishop Amat experience, which is a blessing beyond measure.

This past March, our school community celebrated the formal dedication of the Monsignor Aidan M. Carroll Performing Arts Center, which immediately thereafter was rightly assumed by our student actors, artists, dancers, musicians, and vocalists to showcase their talents in a variety of springtime concerts, exhibits, and most notably, the musical theater production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. We remain indebted to all whose support enabled us to transform this longtime dream into a reality for our student performers and the greater school community.

The addition of our performing arts center is but one use of financial resources for the betterment of our educational program and our campus. As President, I am privileged by the responsibility of collaborating with our stakeholders to develop a strategic plan that remains true to our school’s mission while enhancing the faith formation, academic, and extracurricular programs that benefit current and future Lancers. Naturally, the challenge inherent to this collective effort is to proceed in a manner that remains financially sound and capable of meeting the varied operational costs of our school.

To that end, our single greatest operational challenge as it stands currently is to meet the ever-increasing need for tuition assistance. The number of families who remain committed to providing their children with a Bishop Amat education, but who simply cannot do so without financial aid, continues to increase substantially with each successive school year. As described in the pages that follow, our school is truly blessed to have a variety of financial aid resources via the Catholic Education Foundation, an endowment trust, and more than fifty named scholarship funds; however, the need for tuition assistance continues to grow faster than our current financial aid resources can maintain. Finding the means with which to meet this challenge remains a steadfast commitment of mine and our Development Team as we strive to ensure that families who seek the benefits from an education in the Catholic faith tradition can do so as Bishop Amat Lancers.

As we look to the season of end-of-year charitable giving and our 2022-2023 Annual Appeal, I ask that you consider serving as a partner with us to fulfill the potential and promise that lies ahead for our Bishop Amat community.

Bishop Amat Annual Report 2021-2022 1

a message from leadership

Dear Lancer Alumni, Parents, and Friends:

The 2022-2023 school year opened with excitement, optimism, and a resounding sense of hope and anticipation. Students and teachers have quickly built routines and learned about one another. After a challenging summer, I joined the school community in thanksgiving that the new year had begun. At our opening schoolwide Mass on August 31, Chaplain Fr. John Montejano introduced our spiritual theme for the year: Always Forward. This theme, taken from St. Junipero Serra’s spiritual motto, “Siempre Adelante, Nunca Atras,” mirrors the commitment we share as a school community to learn and grow in Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge.

One particular aspect of this year that I’d like to highlight is that Bishop Amat welcomed twelve new teachers to our esteemed faculty. This diverse group, featuring both Catholic school veterans and teachers brand new to the profession, has prompted me to be even more delighted than usual for a school year to begin. They have immediately embodied the characteristics that we expect of faculty leaders: enthusiasm, leadership, content expertise, and spirituality. I think it speaks to our school’s Mission that over half of the new teachers are either graduates, parents of graduates, or coaches. When people experience what it means to be a Lancer, they feel drawn to deepen their connection to Bishop Amat Memorial High School.

My sincere hope is that you, our alumni and friends, also want to continue and deepen your connection to the school.

We are extremely proud that the finishing touches on the Carroll Center, Amat’s state-of-the-art performing arts center, are complete. The facility and all it represents will undoubtedly be instrumental in growing Bishop Amat’s influence and importance in the San Gabriel Valley as the premiere destination for Catholic education. However, as important as capital improvements are to the future viability of the school, I’m sure Mr. Beck would agree with me that the most pressing area of need at Bishop Amat comes in the form of tuition assistance. More and more, we are finding that families who want access to a Catholic education simply cannot afford one.

After working here over twenty years, I’m well aware of this school’s power to change lives. Parents who grew up with extreme hardship and little opportunity sacrifice everything so their sons and daughters can be members of this community. As much as I appreciate and respect the valiant and professional work being done at our local public schools, I also feel that being rooted in the Catholic tradition gives our students advantages that they would not be able to access elsewhere.

I humbly ask you to consider partnering with us as we try to do everything we can to make a Bishop Amat education accessible to every family who desires it. I have found, as I progress through my adult years, that giving to organizations and causes that mean something to me promotes my ability to live out my faith. It adds a sense of ownership and pride to my life, knowing that I’m helping others achieve and experience the many blessings that were made available to me. Please join me in embracing the motto, Always Forward, as we collectively support the Mission of Bishop Amat Memorial High School.

Dedication Ceremony

Withmuch anticipation, the Dedication of the Bishop Amat Performing Arts Center took place on Wednesday, March 23, 2022.

The festivities began with a reception in the school quad. Mrs. Lucy Rios and the Development Staff transformed the quad into a beautiful reception area and Mr. Jim Beavers of Beavaris, Inc. provided the catering for the event.

Prior to heading over to the new performing arts center, Mr. Richard Beck, President, shared his vision for the new theater complex with some 300 guests in attendance. Mr. Beck announced that the new Center would be named the Monsignor Aidan M. Carroll Performing Arts Center, after Msgr. Carroll who spearheaded the project and was responsible for raising the funds to pay for the Center that would house the school’s choral, band, and theater programs.

Following Mr. Beck’s remarks, the attendees proceeded to the magnificent new building where Bishop David O’Connell, Mr. Gabriel Escovar, and Mr. Paul Escala, Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, shared their enthusiasm on the importance of the new center to the community at large.

Msgr. Carroll honored us with the “cutting of the ribbon” and welcomed everyone into the new center where Bishop O’Connell bestowed a rite of blessing on the new building.

The evening concluded with performances by alumni and the Bishop Amat choir, band, theater, and dance students on the 1800 square foot stage with state of the art sound and lighting. It was an event to remember!

Thank you Msgr. Carroll and all of our Bishop Amat families, alums, and friends who contributed to making our dream a reality. A Donor Wall will be designed and installed in the coming months. Seat sponsorships are also available through the Bishop Amat Development Office.

financial aid scholarship dollars

Keeping our tuition affordable for those who want to be a part of the Amat Family has always been both a focus and a strength of our school. The primary reason for student withdrawal is the inability of the family to pay the tuition. Financial aid/scholarship assistance is critically important to the school. We were able to provide $635,000 in scholarship assistance during the 2021-22 school year from the interest earned on the Endowment Trust Fund and Named Scholarship Funds listed below. The school distributes approximately 5% of the value of the fund in scholarships and does not invade the principal. This allows for growth of the fund

It is very important that Bishop Amat remain accessible and affordable to the families whom we serve. To that end, the school continues to pursue scholarship opportunities for our students. Please consider making a donation to help a future Lancer obtain the same gift that you received.

To obtain information on establishing a Named Scholarship, please contract Ms. Deborah Oswald, Development Director at 626-962-2495, Ext 7444.
