As both Boards look forward to the coming year, there will continue to be both opportunities and challenges. For the next several months, I will be discussing these issues in this column. But, for now, let’s enjoy our time with family and friends.

Dear Members, As we ring in another new year, I would like to focus on the importance and success of our current Membership program here at Birnam Wood. Membership is a top priority for the health and success of any club, and we are always working hard to enhance the members’ experience. This past year, thanks to the efforts of you, our existing members, and the Membership Committee, we welcomed 35 new members into the Club. The new members were from a variety of membership categories, and, with our healthy waitlist, we are anticipating bringing in many more qualified candidates in the upcoming year.

Last year the Membership Committee, chaired by Kelly Vandever, worked extremely hard to carefully evaluate new candidates and, with that goal in mind, brought back some of the application requirements from years past. I thought it might be helpful to share the onboarding process with you so you can feel confident bringing qualified candidates forward for membership.

When selecting a candidate, you must be assured that the candidate’s character, reputation, and behavior will meet the high standards of the Birnam Wood Golf Club. Each candidate will need the endorsement of three current members. The primary sponsor (Proposer) will help the candidate complete the application and will facilitate two social events (i.e. a meal, round of golf, game of pickleball etc.) with the candidate and members of the Membership Committee. The Proposer then organizes or brings the candidate to an event at Birnam Wood that directly relates to the class of membership they are applying for. (For example, a golfer could be brought to a Friday Game.)

It is paramount that the candidate meets additional members and understands the Club’s culture.

The Club benefits when qualified members join. With the goal of keeping our membership strong, we rely heavily on the help of the Membership Committee (listed below), our Membership Director, Kristy Evans, and the support of you, our members.

I want to thank you for your help with membership this past year! Please know that the Membership Committee is available to help you with the process or to answer any questions you may have.

Please reach out to any of them, or Kristy Evans, our Membership Director. They are all happy to help. Let’s keep the club strong and growing!

MEMBERSHIP Welcome New Members – December 2023 Ruth Green (David)

Tennis Anne Towbes, Timothy Stack, David Alexander Ruth and David have lived, and raised their family, in Montecito for the last 32 years. They have been very involved with their children’s schools, as well as numerous community organizations such as CALM, United Boys and Girls Club, CASA and the Music Academy of the West. Ruth was involved in education policy for many years (1990’s -2008) serving at the state and local level. She has worked extensively as a sculptor and has been in juried art shows such as the National Sculpture Society and locally at Sullivan Goss Gallery and Raoul. She and David are very excited to join Birnam and participate in the many events while meeting new friends.

Lynn was educated in Dallas, TX at the Hockaday School, graduated from Duke University and holds a Master of Business Administration from Southern Methodist University’s Cox School of Business. During her more than 30-year career in Fortune 500 companies, she specialized in corporate communications and public affairs. She held leadership positions at Texas Instruments, Raytheon, Greyhound, and many others. She retired to Santa Barbara in 2012. She is an artist who lives and works out of the studio at her Santa Barbara home. She loves serving the community and has been very involved locally. She has been married to her husband, Christopher, for 39 years. They met at Duke, love basketball, and are very excited to join Birnam Wood.

Junior Golf Austin Herlihy, Bryan de Ponce, Bob Smith Mike is a native Californian and graduated from Cal Berkely with a degree in Consumer Marketing, followed by an MBA in Finance and Entrepreneurism from the University of San Francisco. He then obtained his real estate license and began investing in student housing rental properties. In 2020 he took a position at Radius Commercial Real Estate. He enjoys living in Santa Barbara and is an avid golfer. He is very excited for the opportunity to join Birnam Wood and is looking forward to being an active member.

December’s events were outstanding and so much fun for the members and the staff! We hosted the Citrus Singers, followed

by Brunch with Santa (with over 400 attendees), the Champagne and Caviar dinner, and the Monte Carlo New Years Eve celebration. All these events sold out within minutes.

It is a great feeling to plan these events and to see them come together. The support and joy that our members bring to Birnam Wood makes it an amazing place to be. Thank you for your support throughout the year!

Looking forward to our 2024 events, we are beginning with our annual Seafood Extravaganza. The next signature club event will be Easter Brunch. This popular event will open for reservations on January 31st at 9:00am. We encourage you to make your

reservations through the clubs’ app or by calling the front desk.

If you do not know how to use the Club’s app, we will be hosting two events this month to help teach you how to sign up for events on the app. Stay tuned for more information.

GOLF NEWS

HAPPY NEW YEAR! We are so excited to welcome in the new year. We are looking to build on the success we experienced throughout 2023.

We hope to show increased numbers for golf events and golf lessons. Make one of the New Years’ Resolutions to improve your golf game. Your professional staff is here to help.

The weather for the last events of the year was incredible. All of the events had good attendance.

Last year, as you may recall, a number of events had to be rescheduled or cancelled due to the rains we experienced. So, I feel blessed that all events went off without a hitch. Brian O’Laughlin and his maintenance staff have the golf course in fantastic condition. The greens are rolling quick and true.

The Men’s Guest Day had 75 players. It was one of the largest fields of the year. Chef Abdu did his usual great job with all the food offerings. Congratulations to the gross winners, Chris Gregoire, David Pintard, Matt Porter and Richard Ridgway. The winning net group was Mark Abrahams, Blake Jones, Dewey Nicks, and Richman Bry. The Ladies’ Special Holiday Guest Day had a field of 71 players. Again, one of the largest of the year.

Tournament Chair, Nancy Hunter, took the group to Italy. So, of course, the meals were delicious, and

the tee prizes had an Italian flare. As usual, there was a visit from a special guest, but not who you think. Befana crossed the pond to visit all of the ladies at Birnam Wood that day. Befana is a witch who visits less fortunate families on Epiphany to clean their homes and leave special treats for the children. Congratulations to the gross winners, Nancy Hunter, Katie Crook, Barbara DeGroot, and Sue Wilcox. The net winners were Kathy Barton, Sarah Paschke, and Alcia Sinclair.

Our Annual Christmas sale and Couples’ 9-Hole Tournament was a big success. We had 76 players in the field. Christmas music was playing and balloons decorated the golf shop. The winners of the two 9-Hole Divisions were: Frosty Flight (Front Nine) Ashley and Connie Fickel with Jon and Marcy Wimbish (28) and the Santa Flight (Back Nine) Norm and Jane Habermann with Ken and Susan Tarlow (25). The grand prize of the raffle (10 second free shopping spree) went to Connie Fickel for the second year in a row. It was definitely the Fickel’s day.

Finally, the Member-Employee Golf Mixer took place on Monday, December 11th. Again, we had a nice field of 60 players. This was such a fun event that allows members and staff spend time together getting to know one another a little better. After golf, the golfers enjoyed a wonderful Mexican meal prepared

by Nana’s Kitchen. Two teams played extremely well shooting a score of 60 in the scramble format. Congratulations to Tim Stack, Rich Branning, Harley Richardson and Ryan Whitmore, as well as the team of Nathan Ridgell, Joyce Raymond, RJ Dailey, and Mark Blankenburg on their win.

In this month’s edition of the Buzz, I would like to discuss green speeds—what it means to have fast greens and how one can achieve them. The speed of the greens is undoubtedly the number one question I am asked on a daily basis: “What are the greens rolling today?”

People generally believe that to achieve faster greens, one should simply mow them at a lower height and mow more frequently. It seems logical, right? This thought process does work. However, lowering the height of cut and mowing frequently introduces a significant amount of stress to the plant. In fact, mowing is the single most stressful activity for turf.

The more the plant is stressed by frequent mowing, the more vulnerable it becomes to disease pressure and mechanical damage.

Many of you may have noticed that our greens are looking healthier, playing firmer, and faster. You might be surprised to learn that we are mowing less often than ever. But how is that possible?

We achieve this by managing growth. Growth is primarily managed through “spoon-feeding” nitrogen and the use of growth regulators. “Spoon-feeding” provides the plant with just enough food to maintain health without the flush or surge of growth that usually follows heavy fertilizer applications.

As we Welcome Winter to Birnam Wood…

Greetings from Athletics. Welcome Winter! Though the season has become chillier with some rain, we still enjoy our amazing weather and outdoor sports here at Birnam Wood. We’ll never let winter get in the way of fun activities here at the club!

Our rescheduled Pickleball Holiday Turkey Challenge was an absolute hit with our members. We had 16 players participate in the 3rd Annual Holiday Turkey Pickleball Challenge on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Birnam. The play was fun and competitive. Awards were given out for the top two male and female players in each division. Congratulations to Kelly Vandever & Julia Rodgers for being the top male/female in the advanced group and Chris Brown & Suzanne Garrett in the intermediate group. Chad Carty & Carey Pearlman came in second in the advanced while Tim Walsh & Susan Reyer were second in the intermediate group. On a side note, Chris and Tim battled to 57 points each at the end of play but Chris edged out the victory on the head-to-head matchup. Thank you to everyone who participated and can’t wait to see you for our next event in the New Year. - Jeff

I would like to start off the year by talking about strings and grips. These are the two things that connect you to your racket.

I’m sure there are many of you who have not restrung or regripped your racket in years. If this is you, your tennis game and body are suffering. A rule of thumb is, re-string your racket as many times as you play in a week, the same amount during the year. An example is if you play 3x a week, re-string your racket 3x a year. Strings go dead and lose tension over time. This means your arm starts doing all the work and you lose control.

An average synthetic/poly string has a playing life of 30-40 hours, while natural gut stays lively for 60-70 hours before it goes dead. Strings lose their elasticity (ability to stretch) and resiliency (ability to snap back into position). When choosing your string these are the main things to consider: type (gut, multifilament, solid core, polyester, etc), gauge (thickness), and tension. Natural gut and multifilament strings are the softest, best playing, and easiest on the arm, they tend to break faster, and are made up of thousands of filaments woven together. Solid core strings are generally standard synthetic guts, made up of a core which usually lasts longer and has a firmer feel. Polyester strings have become more popular because you can get spin easier with them and they last longer. The downside is they are very stiff and hard on the arm. It is recommended you string them looser than your normal tension. Another popular option is to

hybrid your strings, meaning use half poly and half gut to get the best of both worlds.

Now let’s talk about grip. There are three different types of grips: replacement (cushion), leather, and over grips. I feel this is the most ignored part of the racket/paddle. The grip connects your racket/paddle. I rewrap my grip for 5 to 10 minutes until it lines up perfectly in my hand when I put a new one on. Keep in mind some pros have their grip molded to their hand.

When choosing a grip or over grip you want to consider the thickness (cushion) and texture. Replacement grips are what originally come on your racket/paddle. They are thicker than over-grips and provide more cushion.

NEW YEAR’S FITNESS QUIZ: FACT OR FICTION? Give each question a “true” or “false”, then look at the next section for answers.

QUESTIONS: 1. Walking a mile and running a mile burn the same number of calories.

2. For fat loss, it is better to do more cardio than strength training.

3. Doing just 15-minute segments of exercise won’t really get you more fit.

4. Eating increases your metabolism.

5. The best way to burn fat in a workout is to move at a slow, steady pace for a long time.

ANSWERS: 1. True. You do burn about the same number of calories; it’s just going to take you a lot longer to walk the mile. If you want to increase your heart and lung functions, bumping up your intensity will give you greater benefits during your aerobic workouts.

But keep in mind that walking is one of the best forms of exercise for good health at all ages, and it really helps with our mental health as well.

2. Actually, it’s both. Cardiovascular activity makes your heart stronger, lowers your blood pressure, and yes, burns calories.

Strength training increases bone density, muscle mass and metabolism.

You burn more calories when your heart rate is elevated, and you burn more calories every second of the day when you have more muscle. A combination of both is important for all of the above…. with the addition of a good diet.

3. False. All of the movement you do in a day adds up. For example, you could do a morning walk with the dog, add a quick strength workout at noon, and get in a nice relaxing stretch before bed. Don’t use “I’m too busy” or “I’m too tired” as an excuse. Even 15-minute increments will boost your mood and energy level.

Instead of thinking that exercise is something you HAVE to do, think of it as a way of being good to yourself. You deserve it!

4. True! It’s called the Thermal Effect of Food and does cause your body to heat up after you eat. Some of you may even recall getting over-warm after a big Thanksgiving meal. However, your metabolism is not going to elevate enough to burn off the mashed potatoes and gravy plus pie. Keep to a good diet filled with veggies, high fiber carbs and low-fat protein for better health and waistline.

5. False. The best way to burn off fat is by doing High Intensity Interval Training. Known as HIIT, this is typically done with a repeating pattern over the workout of short, intense bursts of movement followed by a slower period to recover. This creates an oxygen debt that has the effect of burning far more calories, with the bonus of taking less time than traditional cardio.

Try this: after a 5-minute warmup, work as hard or fast as you can for one minute. Recover for two minutes. Repeat this for your whole workout, ending with a five-minute slow recovery. The set intervals give you a time frame to allow you to physical and mentally push harder, knowing that you will have recovery time. Try it! Your body will thank you.

Wednesdays 11:00 - 12:15 in the Studio This class focuses on the foundations of yoga through correct alignment of postures. This method develops strength, endurance, flexibility, optimal body alignment, and mental clarity. Props are used to give support and allow students of various ailments and abilities to achieve poses. Each class is unique and different from each other ranging from standing poses to restorative poses.

Vanessa welcomes all ages and levels of ability to join her class.

Iyengar Yoga is charged with a monthly commitment for $25/class or $30 for daily drop-ins.

STAFF ROSTER CLUBHOUSE DRESS CODE - Country club casual dress is acceptable during the day in all areas of the clubhouse. For gentlemen this includes slacks or Bermuda shorts, collared shirts tucked in at the waist with a belt, or appropriate golf and tennis attire and for ladies this includes dresses, nice pants, skirts, and similar attire. In the evening, a country club casual dining option is available in the Casual Grill, the 19th Hole Bar, and on the Terrace. The Club may request event-specific appropriate attire (black tie, blue jean pants permitted, etc.) for certain functions. Members hosting or sponsoring private events are responsible for communicating the Club dress code to those attending such events.

CANCELLATION POLICY - Reservations for private parties and Club sponsored events will be charged to the Member’s account unless notice of cancellation is received at the office at least 48 hours in advance.

Reservations for Major Club sponsored special events will be charged to the Member’s account unless notice of cancellation is received at the office at least one week in advance. Should a cancellation be made after these times, a charge of one half of the price of the event will be made. Should no cancellation be made, the full price will be charged.
