Is anyone else surprised that Pantone named Cloud Dancer the 2026 Color of the Year? It’s the first time in the history of the color development company to announce a white. A longtime authority on color trends and forecasting, Pantone influences everything from fashion to interiors to graphics, so it will be interesting to see where this neutral hue takes us. As our interiors have become more layered and more saturated with bold color and pattern, I think Pantone wants to remind us that white is still okay.

We recently received a social media message from a designer in town who was bored with white and gray interiors, saying that the palette was behind the times.

Another designer jumped to the defense of the neutral hues to make the point that people should do what makes them happy. I couldn’t agree more.

Whether with unabashed color or clean whites, our homes should reflect the way we prefer to live. White may be boring to some, but it’s a perennial classic—one that you can make your own. Take a look at architect and designer Laura Bartlett’s project on page 22. She renovated a historic home using a neutral backdrop but filled it with antiques, texture, and contrast, letting the architecture shine. She even confesses to trying out a bolder color but ultimately reverting to white.

Of course, vibrant color and pattern is still a stellar choice, as seen in Marianne Strong’s project on page 44. She swathed walls, cabinets, and entire rooms in jewel tones that make every space sing. The designer offers tips on how to amp up the drama successfully, but she also left a few walls neutral to rest the eye. Leigh Misso of River Brook Design also took that into consideration with a Trussville renovation on page 54. Using Benjamin Moore’s White Dove as a background, she created interest through strong doses of contrast and texture. “It’s those shifts in tone, texture, and light that make a space feel layered, intentional, and alive,” Leigh says.

In our Beautiful Baths section, designer Amanda Hickam notes that white is a classic choice that feels effortlessly modern (page 42). Similarly, white sets off architectural details in a bath by Meredith Roberts (page 34) and in a project by architect Paul Bates and designer Sumner Starling (page 38). On page 30, designer Mary Coley Stevens also implemented the quiet hue, popping in blue, gray, and black accents for the best of both worlds.

Clearly, Pantone’s proclamation doesn’t mean we are forgoing color. They are just asking us to step back, take a second look, and remember that white is always in style. The goal is to stay true to your personal taste while continuing to keep things interesting in innovative ways.

Preparing Ahead Simple Tasks To Shape Your Spring Garden

inter and chilly weather bring on a garden’s dormancy, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t work to be done. What you do throughout the cold season can make all the difference for your garden and plants come spring. Here are some ways to support and improve your plants and soil quality, as well as protect pollinators, throughout the winter.

Another task that is synonymous with this time of year is dealing with leaf litter.

Whether you rake, blow, or vacuum, the best thing is to directly mow leaves into your lawn or add them to your planting areas. Leaf litter breaks down, giving organic material and nutrients to your garden as well as acting as an insulator.

Cleaning up your garden is an important part of getting it ready for winter and the next growing season.

Start by removing dead and rotting material and weeding out invasive plants.

Leaf Litter Matters

Soil Care Once you’ve tidied up your garden, you can focus on soil health and weather preparation. Adding mulch, compost, or leaf litter as insulation can improve plants’ survival rates through harsh cold temperatures. Additionally, amending your soil with additives now gives them time to break down and become active components of your soil by spring.

Winter-Weather Preparation Watch out for sudden drops and spikes in temperatures throughout winter. Steady temperatures below freezing can be dangerous for your garden, but large and quick changes are even more worrisome. If the changes in temperature are paired with rain, this may reduce the risk of frost damage to plants. The La Fête Experience

It’s no wonder Kristen Hall’s La Fête was chosen for a Michelin Bib Gourmand Award. The chef/owner of the Parisianstyle bistro and wine bar on Morris Avenue has helmed several popular local eateries for years.

Completely self-taught, Kristen took an unconventional path to becoming a restaurateur. She worked in fund raising and communications, but personal interests took her to the kitchen where she began baking with her young daughters and delivering sweets anonymously to neighbors. The tradition earned her the nickname “The Baking Bandit.” In 2013, Kristen launched her first pop-up, and by 2014, she was a fixture in the Pepper Place Farmers Market.

In the years since, Kristen co-founded Feast & Forest and The Essential before opening the first brick-and-mortar location of Bandit Pâtisserie in 2019.

She debuted La Fête in 2022. The bistro is celebrated for its layered French influences and thoughtful restraint, offering a menu rooted in classic techniques and seasonal expression.

In addition to perfecting her menus, Kristen has personally designed each of her spaces from the ground up, drawing inspiration from France and historic architecture. “I design by feel and intuition, so I think about how people will interact with the wallpaper, the pink marble, the floral dishes, the glassware, and of course the menu. All of that creates a memorable experience for our guests,” Kristen says.

“My goal for the design of La Fête was to translate the way I feel in Paris— and all of France—to our little corner in Birmingham.”

ot every potential home buyer would be thrilled about a historic house that had not been touched in many decades, but architect Laura Bartlett was an exception. “For me, it was kind of a dream. There had been a few kitchen updates, but really everything was very

“They are from the 1970s and add a little edge to the formal room,” says Laura.

intact and had not been renovated,” says Laura. “It was nice to have a blank slate from a preservation standpoint and also to be able to make it ours without inheriting someone else’s updates.”

The architect and her husband Taylor set about bringing the house back to its prominence by capitalizing on its original limestone fireplaces, hardwood floors, and abundant wavy-glass windows.

“Optimistically, except for the kitchen, I thought it just needed a layer of freshening,” Laura says. “But as I well know, in renovations, things tend to snowball. In this case, a beam that had to be added to the revamped kitchen affected an upstairs bathroom, which led to the bathroom being updated, and so on.” In addition, the changes to the kitchen went well beyond structural—it

was enlarged by incorporating several small pantries and a side porch. “We wanted a more spacious kitchen that opened up to the dining room, so we created a generous cased opening between the two,” Laura says.

“I didn’t want to lose any of the original windows, so we ran the counters underneath with open shelves,” says Laura.

With its Tudor leanings, the home had dark wood trim throughout which caused a bit of a dilemma. “We really struggled with whether to paint it or not,” Laura says. “We wanted to respect the original materials and tried not to go all in and dip the house in white paint.

Laura Bartlett’s Old House Musings Historic homes hold drama in their individual history. When given the opportunity to peel back some of the layers of time, modern additions can be the foil that highlights the original architecture, renewing that sense of drama. I try to put on my editing hat but not overdo it. To me, every house seems to want a certain stylistic direction, and it’s important to respect what you inherit when possible, especially in a renovation. I try not to take away from what is originally loved about the home—interior architectural details, for example, should be celebrated.

that while she is not always a fan of neutral colors, this house seemed to ask for it. “There is a lot of variation in color on the outside with the brick, so we balanced that busyness with a quiet interior palette,” she says.

That mindset extended to the furnishings where a brown mohair sectional and a crisp, classic white sofa join hands in the living room. Similarly, a dark gray/green velvet table skirt in the entry balances the all-white walls.

“We debated whether to paint some of the dark trim throughout the house because there was a lot of it,” says Laura. “We decided to do it in stages by painting the trim around the stairs first, then trying the pickets before committing to the white.”

Meet Laura Bartlett Raised in Atlanta, Laura lived in homes designed by celebrated classicist architects Philip Schutze and James Means.

“When my husband and I were renovating this historic house, it felt very full circle in a sense,” she says.

Laura holds dual degrees in architecture and interior architecture from Auburn University. She gained practical experience with Giattina Aycock Architecture Studio, working on projects including the new Children’s Hospital, Railroad Park, and multifamily housing.

Later, a graduate program in London for her husband led her to a position on a luxury residential design team where she worked internationally on projects from London to Dubai.

A return to Birmingham in 2012 landed Laura in commercial design with Williams Blackstock Architects, but she longed to get back into the residential arena. Mary Coley’s Must-Haves for Stellar Style • Consider lighting from all angles.

In addition to overhead fixtures, ambient lighting is essential for creating a mood. “We included dimmable sconces that can be used as accent bedside lighting or for task,” Mary Coley says.

• Choose one hero material. For this space, Mary Coley put the spotlight on the marble by using it in the bath, the threshold, and on bedside tables. “It quietly links the spaces together even if the forms 32 BH&G | j a n u a r y. f e b r u a r y 2 0 26

differ. This could also be small and simple. Consider using accessories such as trays or picture frames in the same finish as the fixtures.”

• Go custom with window treatments. “Blackout drapes close with the flip of a switch for ease, and they really lean into the hotel feel,” Mary Coley says. “Also, the decorative roman shade above the tub adds a nice touch.”

• Invest in good linens. “Sheets and towels are things you use

every day, so taking the time to figure out what you actually prefer makes the experience feel intentional and elevated,” Mary Coley says. “For the bed, that might mean choosing between crisp percale or softer sateen, or deciding on lighter versus heavier layers. rivacy was a primary factor when designer Meredith Roberts of Gray Blake Interiors set about renovating her clients’ cavernous bathroom. “It was just one big open space with a tub and no shower,” says Meredith. “My goal was to reorganize the layout within the existing footprint, update fixtures and finishes, add a shower, and provide privacy and storage.”

Now, a soaking tub resides directly across from the double-door opening that accesses the bedroom. His-and-her vanities designed by Meredith are separated by those same doors. A shower tucks off to the right of the tub, and a private water closet is concealed on the left.

hen designing a new space in a 1920s home, it’s imperative to look to classic materials and enduring style for a successful, integrated design. “This

is a beautiful estate. Our goal was to make the renovations seamless and timeless,” says designer Sumner Starling of Starling Interiors.

The first step was looking for a way to gain more square footage. Architect

Paul Bates evaluated the existing floor plan and found space they could take in from adjacent rooms. This allowed for a larger bath with freestanding tub, separate shower, a pair of custom vanities, and a generously-sized closet. j a n u a r y. f e b r u a r y 2 0 26 | BH&G 39

The designers created a well-organized space for this fashion-minded homeowner and her husband. A center island topped in white oak separates her side from his.

Stepping Out Retrofitting a bold new look into the home’s existing powder room, the team designed an oval pedestal sink (painted Inchyra Blue by Farrow & Ball) and visually expanded the room with an antiqued, mirrored wall. A Schumacher wallpaper depicts a fantastical dreamscape forest. ”Powder rooms are one of my favorite spaces to design because clients are usually willing to take risks in ways they might not want to in larger spaces,” Sumner says. “Also, every guest visits your powder room, so why not bring a WOW factor to your home for visitors to really remember!”

Even with floor plan changes, Sumner says, “The master bath and closet needed to feel like they had always been part of this house.” To accomplish that goal, Paul and Sumner, along with her codesigner Anne Hurley, chose finishes in

ometimes a few small tweaks can make all the difference. For this primary bath renovation, designer Amanda Hickam of Harper Harris Design made simple but strategic design moves to maximize space and provide a better flow.

Trouble spots included a much-toolong vanity that took up floor space and butted against a built-in tub surround.

The pre-fab shower felt very cramped, and the water closet was too visible.

Her solutions? Replace the clunky tub with a freestanding style, shorten the vanity, and add a storage tower between the sinks to make up for lost cabinet space. She also portioned off the water closet on its own. “We now have a clear visual line all the way through the entire length of the bathroom,” Amanda says.

The storage tower resides on a marble plinth that joins the backsplash band for a clean, continuous look.

That question was one designers Marianne Strong and Teresa Cole were asked almost every day while they worked on the renovation of the home at the junction of Bonita Drive and Ventura Avenue. “Homewood residents were so curious and had a vested interest,” Marianne says. “Everyone was grateful it wasn’t torn down.”

Built in 1935, the Hollywood home is very much a beloved part of the neighborhood. “When our longtime clients bought the house, the only construction planned was a bump-out of the kitchen—just a small renovation,” 46 BH&G | j a n u a r y. f e b r u a r y 2 0 26

Teresa explains. “That quickly escalated.”

Every wall that McGuire Construction’s crew opened revealed a new set of challenges, and soon the team realized that the entire home needed to be taken down to the studs.

The change of scope allowed the designers to really lean into the charm of the home’s original architecture— replacing square doors with custom arched French doors on the front façade, adding a laundry room, and reorganizing bedroom suites upstairs. “The exterior of the house looks very similar to the way it did originally,” Marianne says. “That was important to all of us. We improved it with subtle tweaks.”

come to the forefront, nodding at what’s further inside. Some rooms are steeped in vibrancy and others offer a calming balm, but every one has at least a touch of color and pattern. “There are lots of fun spaces mixed with calmer, more restful rooms throughout the house,” Teresa says. “At one time, the couple lived in California, so you can feel that eclectic West Coast vibe woven into the design.”

Another way the designers brought that collected, personal feel to rooms was with lighting choices. Sculptural pendants and linear chandeliers span the style spectrum from traditional to modern, all with the goal of feeling unique. A custom six-armed fixture from Italy hugs the ceiling of the formal living room while Arteriors fixtures that recall the shape of an abacus light the

kitchen island. In the dining room, a stack of graduated gold discs give off soft light. Marble bases add interest to the library’s sconces.

“Our client is adventurous, and we wanted each selection to feel unique to her,” Marianne says. “They love color and pattern, and they gave us creative license throughout this project. It’s that level of trust that allows the magic to happen.” birminghamhomeandgarden.com

GO BOLD. “Some people worry that they will tire of color and pattern. But I think a bolder room creates more interest, which lends itself to longevity,” Marianne says. The designers advise using saturated color. Mixing a variety of tones of the same color makes a big impact in a softer way. And remember to vary scale when it comes to layering pattern on pattern.

MAKE IT PERSONAL. “Add in items that show your personality,” says Teresa. “It’s not just using tons of stuff. Find pieces that represent your interests. And always throw in something unexpected.”

MIX, DON’T MATCH. “Rooms are not as interesting when everything matches,” Marianne says. “A room should reflect the people who live there.

It’s much more fun to see what the person is actually reading versus books on the shelves that were purchased because of their spine color.”

BE PATIENT. “Good rooms take time.

You can come in and do the lacquered walls, wallpaper, and upholstery, but it takes several months for art, books, and collected details to come together,” says Marianne. “If you try to force everything at once, people can tell. Thoughtful layers take time,” START SMALL. “They sent us videos telling us what they wanted,”Marianne explains. “One loves feeling cozy and cocooned so we gave her bunk beds. The other loves fashion so we leaned into ‘more is more.’” In both spaces the designers wallpapered everything and mixed patterns on (but not limited to) walls, ceilings, window drapes, bed drapes, and throw pillows. “Both rooms are jewel boxes, and we were able to give each girl her own hideaway.”

he owners of this historic Trussville residence loved the character and charm of their home. But over the years, the interiors had become a patchwork of collected pieces, leaving the space feeling rather disconnected. That’s when Leigh Misso of River Brook Design & Construction was brought in to create a more connected, thoughtfully edited flow.

deep respect for the home’s history.

Rather than reinventing, she refined, thoughtfully transforming it from a muddled mix into a cohesive, elegant retreat for the family of five. “The goal was to honor the bones while reimagining the interiors with a fresh, modernized look,” says the designer.

Her strategy hinged on creating a rhythm of light and shadow throughout the home, allowing its traditional architecture to take center stage while giving each room a renewed sense of identity. She then sought to introduce contrast, not just in color—such as dark cabinetry that punctuates lighter walls and moody blues softened by natural neutrals—but also in materials. Polished finishes shine against raw textures, adding depth and dimension without overwhelming the historic structure. “It really came down to layering light and shadow, playing with scale, and balancing texture,” Leigh says. “We used contrast as a unifying element.”

brought in a deep, oversized sectional that anchors the room without overwhelming it—and makes it easier for the family to entertain. She offset the large piece with a duo of blue velvet chairs that add a rich note of color. A mix of modern lighting, such as the wall sconces, chandelier, and floor lamp, introduces a contemporary counterpoint that keeps the space feeling fresh.

office, she removed dated built-ins to open the footprint, replacing them with a modern desk and a gallery wall that blends family memories with curated artwork—“a way to make it feel personal but not cluttered,” Leigh notes. The powder bath gained personality through wallpaper and unexpected hardwired table lamps. And in the primary suite, where several existing elements had to remain, the designer shifted the visual weight with an off-black limewash applied to walls and ceiling, giving it movement and depth. In addition, a massive chandelier capitalizes on the vaulted height. “Meals can heal,” says author and culinary nutrition expert Carolyn Williams, PhD, RD. “The right nutrition can address everything from joint pain to headaches to digestive issues to problems with concentration and focus.

The easiest way to do that? Choose foods that fight inflammation.”

According to Carolyn, so many chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and 64 BH&G | j a n u a r y. f e b r u a r y 2 0 26

even Alzheimer’s have one underlying connecting factor—inflammation.

“Making changes in your diet doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s not about cutting out foods,” she says. “Everyone can benefit from an anti-inflammatory diet. It’s the the best place to start for a healthier you.”

Here, Carolyn shares some of her favorite recipes. Now’s the time to add these to you new year’s resolutions.

Carolyn, a registered dietitian and a member of the Birmingham Chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier International, is known for simplifying the science behind healthy eating. She’s written two books about it—Meals that Heal: 100 + Everyday Anti-Inflammatory Recipes in 30 Minutes or Less and Meals that Heal: One-Pot. Both are about harnessing the healing powers of food with quick, easy-to-follow, family-friendly recipes. Carolyn has also received a James Beard award for a story on the link between diet and Alzheimer’s disease.

On her social media outlets, Carolyn breaks down the latest news and trends when it comes to food, diet, and health. “I love being a trusted ‘go-to’ resource when you need practical, research-based answers for you or your family,” she says.

Getting Started Carolyn suggests three simple additions to your diet: • Eat at least one cup of leafy greens each day.

• Eat two to three cups of berries (fresh or frozen) a week.

• Eat five servings of cruciferous vegetables each week. These are veggies that generally don’t smell great when you’re cooking them.

Chicken Tostadas with Avocado Salsa

SERVING 2 TOSTADAS

INGREDIENTS 1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breasts 2 teaspoons All-Purpose Taco Seasoning or store-bought organic taco seasoning 3/8 teaspoon kosher salt, divided ½ cup low-sodium chicken broth 1 cup chopped tomato or quartered cherry tomatoes 1 ripe avocado, chopped 2 tablespoons chopped red onion 1 teaspoon olive oil 2 teaspoons red wine vinegar or fresh lime juice 8 (6-inch) corn tortillas Cooking spray 1 ounce queso fresco (fresh Mexican cheese) or feta cheese, crumbled (about ¼ cup) Chopped fresh cilantro (optional) INSTRUCTIONS 1. Rub the chicken with the taco seasoning and 1/4 teaspoon of the salt and place in a 6-quart multicooker.

Pour the broth over the chicken.

Close and lock the lid of the cooker; turn the pressure release valve to the sealing position. Program the cooker to cook on manual on high pressure for 9 minutes.

2. P reheat the oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.

Combine the tomato, avocado, and onion in a medium bowl. Whisk together the oil, vinegar, and remaining 1/8 teaspoon salt in a small bowl, and pour over the avocado mixture, stirring gently. Let stand until ready to serve (up to 1 hour).

3. Turn the pressure release valve to the venting position to quickly release the pressure (steam) from the cooker until the float valve drops.

Carefully remove the lid. Transfer the chicken breasts to a cutting board or plate, and let cool for 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, lightly coat both sides of each tortilla with cooking spray; place on the prepared baking sheet.

Bake the tortillas until lightly browned and crisp, 10 to 15 minutes, turning once. During the last 5 minutes of

baking, shred the chicken with two forks. Top each tortilla with 1/4 cup of the shredded chicken, about 3 tablespoons of the avocado mixture, and 11/2 teaspoons of the cheese.

Garnish with cilantro, if desired.

Stovetop Option: No multicooker? Simply season the chicken according to the recipe, and combine the chicken and broth in a medium saucepan. Bring the broth to a boil, reduce the heat to maintain a simmer, cover, and cook until the chicken is cooked through, about 15 minutes. Continue as directed.

Zucchini Taco Skillet SERVES 4

INGREDIENTS 1 teaspoon olive oil ¾ pound lean ground beef 1½ tablespoons All-Purpose Taco Seasoning or store-bought organic taco seasoning ¾ teaspoon kosher salt 1 (14.5-ounce) can no-salt-added, fire-roasted diced tomatoes 1 (14.5-ounce) can no-salt-added black beans, rinsed and drained 1 cup fresh or frozen corn kernels (about 2 ears) ½ cup water 3 cups zucchini spirals 1½ ounces cheddar cheese, shredded (about 1/3 cup) ¼ cup chopped scallions INSTRUCTIONS 1. Heat a large skillet over medium. Add the oil to the pan; swirl to coat. Add the beef; cook for 4 minutes, stirring to crumble. Increase the heat to mediumhigh and add the taco seasoning and salt; cook, stirring often, until the meat is browned, about 2 minutes more. Stir in the tomatoes, beans, corn, and water; bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally. Simmer until slightly thickened, about 5 minutes.

2. Stir in the zucchini spirals. Cover, reduce the heat to medium-low, and cook until the zucchini is just tender, about 3 minutes. Divide evenly among four pasta bowls. Top with the cheese and the scallions.

Sheet Pan Honey-Soy Salmon, Sweet Potatoes, and Green Beans SERVES 4

INGREDIENTS Cooking spray 1½ tablespoons gluten-free, lower-sodium soy sauce or tamari 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon honey 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice (from 1 lime) 2 garlic cloves, minced 4 (5-ounce) skin-on salmon fillets 1 pound sweet potatoes, cut into ¾-inch cubes ½ teaspoon kosher salt ½ teaspoon black pepper 1 (12-ounce) bag trimmed fresh green beans INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line an 18- x 13-inch rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil; coat with cooking spray.

2. Whisk together the soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of the oil, the honey, lime juice, and half the garlic in a large bowl. Place the salmon in the bowl. Toss to coat.

3. Put the potatoes on the prepared pan. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon of the oil, and sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon of the salt and 1/4 teaspoon of the pepper; toss to coat.

Roast until the potatoes are almost fork-tender, 20 to 25 minutes.

4. A few minutes before the potatoes are done cooking, toss the green beans with the remaining 1 tablespoon oil and remaining garlic, and sprinkle with the remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper; toss to coat. Remove the potatoes from the oven; stir and push them toward one end of the pan. Place the marinated salmon in the center of the pan, and spread the green beans over the remaining exposed portion of the pan. Roast for 15 minutes.
