In this issue our resident health and fitness expert, Chris Thatcher, dives deep into how to maximise your achievements, by ensuring your goals are more fully aligned with the most important things in your life! an external thing we need to ‘find’, believing it to be something we do or don’t ‘have’.

Well, I’m here to assure you that REAL motivation is so much more than a fleeting sensation and how you can most effectively tap into it at all times!

W

elcome to another instalment of my thoughts on all things health and fitness, I appreciate you taking the time to tune in.

In this issue I want to build on what I shared in my last piece on setting behaviour based goals; by discussing another key aspect of the change process…

MOTIVATION! ‘Motivation’ has become a real buzzword in the fitness, diet and wellness worlds, with the Internet and social media awash with ‘motivational quotes’ and hash tags such as #motivationmonday.

Now I’m definitely not saying that’s a bad thing, far from it. We all certainly need a little kickstart every now and then, so an inspirational quote or picture at the right time can be a really positive thing.

However, we often fall into the trap of thinking of motivation as 4

Motives = Goals You see by focussing more on your deepest ‘motives’ for wanting to get healthier you are far more likely to stay true to your goals.

This is a key part of any goal setting process, because while it’s essential to know exactly ‘what’ you want, getting super clear on ‘why’ you want it is even more important in ensuring you stick with the process.

Let me be clear in what I mean by your ‘why’. With the majority of people I work with, when I ask them why they want to achieve the goals they have, they all typically give me a very standard response.

Take my client Allison for example, when I asked her what her main goal was she replied ‘to lose weight and get fitter’.

When I asked why that goal was important to her she replied ‘because I want to look better and have more energy’.

Now don’t get me wrong, these are simple but powerful reasons that can certainly be used to keep her motivated throughout her change process.However, in order

to ensure the greatest possible connection and adherence to her goal, I wanted to take her much deeper.

So I asked again ‘Why is that important to you?’

After thinking for a few moments she looked at me and said ‘because I want to feel more attractive and not exhausted all the time’. Again, great reasons. But I still felt she was holding something back so I asked her one more time, ‘why is that important to you?’

At this point, like most people, Allison took a much longer pause.

You see, most of us rarely, if ever, question ourselves to this degree.

After quite a long time, she eventually said ‘because I want more passion in my marriage and more energy to play with my children’.

BOOM! Now those are DEEP motives to attach to your goals and give you real, enduring motivation you can draw on throughout your journey.

So I had Allison write down these deep ‘whys’ down alongside her goals and from there we mapped out a clear and manageable plan that would ensure she achieved all that she wanted and more.

Fast forward 3 months and Allison is already feeling more confident, attractive and energised, continually checking

back in to her ‘whys’ to keep her focus and willpower topped up!

You see, one thing we know about human beings, is that beyond our basic survival needs such as air, food and shelter, we have a real desire for ‘purpose’.

More surface level goals, such as ‘looking better’ or ‘feeling healthier’ are great start points in creating a positive change in your life. However, they are rarely enough to give you the real fuel for success.

Revive Your Journey So, if you’re feeling ready to start out on a new health and fitness path or simply just want to revive your current journey, take some time to find your deepest ‘whys’.

Write down your goals and ask yourself, ‘Why is this important to me?’

Whatever answer comes up, note it down, take a moment to look at your answer and then, ask yourself the question again, ‘Why is THIS important to me?’.

Try this up to 5 times to see just how deep you can go. Then, regularly check back in to review and reaffirm your reasons. You’ll be amazed by how powerful this one simple exercise can be.

In doing this exercise please do be mindful that discovering your deepest ‘whys’ can sometimes be quite an emotional experience so be prepared for some things to come up that you might not be expecting.

Just remember that your ‘whys’ are yours and yours alone, so it does not matter what they look like the most important thing is that whatever drives you to become fitter and healthier is equally good for those around you.

A Good Example You see when we show ourselves the necessary care and compassion needed to build our healthiest possible life, we naturally become more caring and compassionate towards others.

We become a good example to those around us and can even put our greater energy and resilience to use by helping causes beyond our own.

A perfect example is this month’s ‘Sport Relief ’ event, an opportunity for people to channel their fitness toward doing something amazing for others.

Beyond your own more personal drives for improving your life and the lives of your loved one’s, using a charitable cause such as this can also be a powerful motivator.

Truly Fit For Purpose Whatever you feel will work best for you, just remember that in order to create real, lasting motivation, don’t just focus on getting ‘fit’ but rather aim to be truly ‘fit for purpose’.

I

n January our Marketing Assistant had a terrible accident resulting in broken bones and an air ambulance being called and now a long recovery.

This accident serves as a reminder of just how precious life is, and how close we come sometimes to having everything snatched away without notice.

I feel sure that some of you reading this will have suffered traumatic experiences and already know the importance of making the most of each day.

Recognising your own mortality is one of the reasons why when I work with clients, it is not all about the consistently high returns* we have achieved over the last 8 years; it is about what is the purpose of having money, and how much is required to do the things they want to do, and how important it

is to do things while you can, rather than having regrets.

Most of us have regrets of some kind.

Looking at Your Life In my head I still feel young, but I do not have the same energy as 20 years ago, and I will take the car instead of walk.

In another 20 years I will simply not be bothered to do certain things or have to give myself longer to complete them.

In summary we do not always know what is around the corner, so construct a bucket list.

There will come a day when your arms are weak, your legs struggle

to carry your weight, your eyes grow dim and ears become blocked, hair recedes, and desires become lost. Enjoy life now.

You are probably not the fittest or healthiest you have been, but you are probably better than you are going to be. Enjoy life now.

Review your pensions and consider your ISA’s, look at your bonds and review your Unit Trusts for Investment returns and for efficiency. Enjoy life now.

Do not put off to next year what you want to do now, whether that is spending, saving or reviewing.

Enjoy life now.

So now let us consider your own mortality for a moment and assume you are like everyone else and that one day you will tootle off the planet into the great sky above (well like most people – some will go down instead of up).

What are you leaving behind for others to sort out?

If you are like many of my clients you will have a collection of various bank accounts in both individual and joint names, plus a number of ISA’s and individual shares, and perhaps bonds.

When it comes to sorting out someone else’s finances this can be difficult and time consuming, so some simplification now is usually preferable; especially if the original reasons for the various investments no longer exist and the benefits are not as good as the alternatives that now exist.

Sometimes the process is made worse when the person dying is still of working age and has various

pensions and life insurance that has not been written in trust.

Delays can also occur if no Will exists or Powers of Attorney are not in place.

I often find that whilst it can take a little while to complete a full Spring clean of a client’s finances, the after effects are worth it.

It also usually means that all the paperwork kept for many years can be destroyed (we can even do this for our clients via an industrial shredder).

Avoid Paying Unnecessary Tax Assuming your Will is up to date and all your finances have been checked, considered where best, and summarised, you then need to think about whether there is an inheritance tax liability.

This will take into account how any life cover has been arranged, who the pension beneficiaries are and how the Will has been written i.e. beneficiaries trusts etc., as well of course as all your assets, liabilities and previous gifts made.

It has been said that death and taxes can’t be avoided, and whilst I agree with the first point there is a lot that can be done to reduce, if not avoid most taxes.

The government after all have provided so many allowances and exemptions to assist individuals to legally avoid paying tax.

As a former accountant, it seems a shame when I see so much paid for little or no reason. Whilst I know the government needs individuals to pay tax, personally I think you should pay the minimum, and then if you want to make a donation to your favourite political party, you

should do so separately.

MOTHERS DAY COMPETITION COVER STARS Every issue our cover star is a local individual or group with an inspirational story to share.

This issue we chose to highlight some very special Mums who had been nominated in our Mothers Day Competition.

W

e decided to do something different for this issue and open up our front cover photoshoot for Mothers Day, to local Mums via a competition and we are so pleased we did!

We had a fantastic response, with over 94 Mums being nominated!!

Sadly once each nomination had been accessed to make sure the nominator had met the competition entry requirements, the shortlist was a lot smaller - but this was fantastic news for those who did!

We announced the winners of the competition via a live Facebook video as Helen Rodley, Jessica Jones and Ann Bangs. Sadly one fantastic Mum, Helen, was unable to attend.

Welcome Emmalina Anderson who was the first to comment on the live video that she would be free in the event that one of the other mums couldn’t attend.

Jessica Jess was nominated by her 12 year old daughter Sinead, who entered via our website and had this to say about her Mum: ‘She is very reliable and doesn’t get thanked enough for everything she has done for everyone, like her brother, she helps him all the time and just always being happy and never sad, and she is always so postive and she deserves to be thanked for it.’

‘I sort of remember her telling me that she had entered me, but I thought nothing more about it.

When we found out I had won it was a huge surprise and we were both very excited.’

Ann Ann was nominated by her daughter Laura.

‘I’m not on Facebook so didn’t really know anything about it, until Laura rang me up and asked if I was free on Tuesday between 11am and 2pm. I thought here we go... I

never expected her to say I had won this!

Emma Emma was nominated by her sister Hayley: ‘Emma definitely deserves it.

She’s both mum and dad to her boys and deserves some Emma time, and not Mummy time!’

‘My children are my life. I can’t remember life really without them, they are my biggest achievement and it’s lovely to be able to do this and be pampered. I’ve never done anything like this before.’

Karen The competition was for 3 Mums, but all along our MD Katie had planned to ask her own Mum to attend.

‘When thinking about what I could do for Mothers Day this year, I suddenly thought how nice it would be to organise something like this, which sparked the idea of launching the competition. Not

that she believed me to start with.’

‘I thought she had been let down by someone and I was taking their place. It was a lovely surprise.

The Photoshoot It is fair to say there were a lot of laughs throughout our time together. Despite them not all knowing each other, everyone was united together through their love and funny stories of what it is to be a mum.

We all agreed that being a mum is hard work, the amount of time you spend tyding up, only for a mess to be made again when your back is turned. The fact that your washing basket never seems to have a bottom, and there is always something that needs to be ironed.

As much as it is irritating at times, it is also something every other mum faces, and doesn’t compare to actually bringing up your own human/s into the world and seeing them grow and develop into adults, praying all the way along that you are doing it right.

Oh and the first time Katie sang in a school talent show moved me to tears. (Nice save) Katie More Than a Mum Whilst our lovely mums are indeed just that, they are also women with their own lives and great stories.

Jessica was orgionally born in Bedford but realised she wanted to work with horses so moved to Wales to study, started a family and only moved back 1.5 years ago and is now getting ready to launch her own pebble business (www.kavakrafts.co.uk).

before her daughter Laura and went back to work after she had arrived, only reently taking early retirement.

Emma has always lived life to the full and had a great time and now also works at a Pre-School part-time, as well as bringing up her two boys predominantly by herself.

Karen used to work as a secretary for the BBC, even appearing on TV when she anwered the phones on ‘Swapshop’ on Saturday mornings.

She gave it up to be a stay at home mum when her children arrived, and since they have grown up achieved a 1st class degree in History, written children books, and helped support her husband set-up his own business.

Show You Care.

A Mum is for life not just for childhood.

This Mothers Day we hope you had a great time and showed your Mum (no matter where she is) how much you love her/think about her.

And rememebr you don’t need a special day to show how much they mean to you - surprise them when they least expect it, and you never know they may just keep that embarrrassing memory to themselves for a little while longer...

here are many myths that surround Family Law. Hannah explains the truth behind them.

1. I can have a “quickie” divorce.

The reality is that there is no such thing.

You cannot obtain a divorce at all within the first year of marriage.

After that, the procedure for all divorces is much the same.

The media often report about celebrity “quickie” divorces, but what they are referring to is the actual pronouncement of the Decree Nisi, which takes minutes.

However, before this, all petitions will have had to have been drafted, issued by the court, served upon the Respondent, and the actual Decree Nisi applied for.

Once the Decree Nisi has been pronounced, the Petitioner must wait 6 weeks and 1 day before they can apply for the Decree Absolute, which is the stage at which the divorce is finalised.

This whole process usually takes around 6 months.

2. I can get divorced on the grounds of irreconcilable differences.

Irreconcilable differences is an American term.

There is actually only one ground for divorce in England and Wales, and that is that the marriage has irretrievably broken down.

To prove this, the Petitioner has to rely on one of five facts; - Adultery - Unreasonable behaviour - 2 years separation with consent - 5 years separation - Desertion.

3. If my spouse committed adultery, I will get more in the financial settlement This is not true.

The facts cited in the divorce petition are of no consequence in the financial side of things.

The court does not financially reward or penalise people based on the reasons for the divorce, they have to take into account both parties respective financial needs.

4. We are not married, but live together, therefore we are ‘common law’ spouses and have the same rights as married couples.

If you are not married, you do not have the same rights as a married couple.

Cohabiting couples will only have an automatic claim over any property or assets that are owned in the couples joint names.

Other than that, couples would have to rely on fairly vague and complex trust law.

Some protection can be offered where there are children of the relationship, and the courts can make orders to protect the home for the child(ren) until they reach the age of 18 or finish full time education.

If you do not wish to marry, the best way to protect your interest is to have joint ownership, declarations of trust and/or cohabitation agreements.

5. Once I am divorced, no financial claims can be made.

The Decree Absolute signifies the end of the marriage. It does not automatically protect your financial position, as finances are actually a separate process to the divorce.

In order to prevent future claims, you will need to enter into a Consent Order which provides a clean break.

Even if there are no assets at the time of divorce, it can be advisable to enter into a clean break Consent Order to protect any future assets you may acquire.

We built Facebook to help people stay connected and bring us closer together with the people that matter to us. That’s why we’ve always put friends and family at the core of the experience. Research shows that strengthening our relationships improves our well-being and happiness.

But recently we’ve gotten feedback from our community that public content -- posts from businesses, brands and media -- is crowding out the personal moments that lead us to connect more with each other.

It’s easy to understand how we got here. Video and other public 22

content have exploded on Facebook in the past couple of years. Since there’s more public content than posts from your friends and family, the balance of what’s in News Feed has shifted away from the most important thing Facebook can do -- help us connect with each other.

We feel a responsibility to make sure our services aren’t just fun to use, but also good for people’s well-being. So we’ve studied this trend carefully by looking at the academic research and doing our own research with leading experts at universities.

The research shows that when we use social media to connect with people we care about, it can be good for our well-being. We can feel more connected and less lonely, and that correlates with long term measures of happiness and health. On the other hand, passively reading articles or watching videos -- even if they’re entertaining or informative -- may not be as good.

Based on this, we’re making a major change to how we build Facebook.

I’m changing the goal I give our product teams from focusing on helping you find relevant content to helping you have more meaningful social interactions.

We started making changes in this direction last year, but it will

take months for this new focus to make its way through all our products. The first changes you’ll see will be in News Feed, where you can expect to see more from your friends, family and groups.

As we roll this out, you’ll see less public content like posts from businesses, brands, and media.

And the public content you see more will be held to the same standard -- it should encourage meaningful interactions between people.

For example, there are many tight-knit communities around TV shows and sports teams.

We’ve seen people interact way more around live videos than regular ones.

Some news helps start conversations on important issues.

But too often today, watching video, reading news or getting a page update is just a passive experience.

Now, I want to be clear: by making these changes, I expect the time people spend on Facebook and some measures of engagement will go down.

But I also expect the time you do spend on Facebook will be more aluable. And if we do the right thing, I believe that will be good for our community and our business over the long term too.

KIDS CORNER Every issue we dedicate a space where kids both big and small can kick back and read the latest instalments of our childrens stories and have fun with our games.

The story so far:- Alex, Tom, Molly and Violet have gone back to the clouds with the potatoes.

Billy is waiting for them to climb down the chimney while Danny and Pete are collecting firewood and matches. Will potatoes fuel the cloud making machine and will Alex, Tom, Molly and Violet return to Billy’s clutches before the fire is started?

Part Ten Molly sat on the cloud train with Violet curled up on her lap.

She was amazed at this other world and couldn’t stop talking.

“Why is everyone wearing blue?

I think purple would be much better… oh look at the shops… look at..” She prattled on and on to no one in particular.

“Get ready to jump.” Strato called as the cloud train slowed down. They all assembled together with Alex and Tom carrying the potatoes, Molly carrying Violet and Strato holding onto Molly’s arms, and leapt onto the cloud-making machine cloud.

“Wow it’s huge!” Molly looked up at the towering cumulous cloud in front of her while Strato opened the door. They all trooped inside and Violet jumped out of Molly’s arms as Molly gazed about

her in wonder, as she had never seen anything like this before.

By the time she reached the fuel chamber the others were already there with the hatch open.

Alex put the potatoes into the small hole one by one. Strato watched the needle on the fuel gauge shudder into life. “It’s working.” He was delighted.

Alex loaded the last potato and the needle stopped at the quarter full mark. “Is that it?” Tom was disappointed. “We’re going to need more potatoes.” He wasn’t looking forward to all the trips they would have to make to fill up the tank.

“We’ve got enough to see if it’ll work.” Alex was confident.

“After all, cars work on a quarter of a tank don’t they?” He looked at Strato who wasn’t sure, but pushed the green button anyway.

They all looked through one of the many windows into the bowels of the machinery and were excited as some cogs and pistons sprang into life, and chains and wheels moved around.

“Yes! Let’s go outside and watch the clouds come out the top.”

Alex ran up the stairs two at a time with the others following him. “Where’s Violet? Wait for me.” Molly yelled as she ran

as fast as she could.

They all assembled outside and looked up. “I can’t find Violet.”

Molly tugged Strato’s arm but he just continued to look up. The machine coughed and spluttered and then made a rumbling noise that could only be described as the sound of someone blowing a raspberry. “It blew off ”. Molly giggled and the friends watched as a small brown cloud was belched from the funnel. It floated gently along in the breeze, falling slowly towards them.

“That’s Violet meowing. Where is he?” As the cloud dropped lower they could all see a terrified cat clinging onto it.

Violet had run all the way along the cloud path inside the cloud building to the very top. Being surrounded by the mist made him very cold and he noticed sunlight pouring through a hole in the ceiling and instinctively headed towards it.

He found it difficult to climb the sloping metal machine but with his sharp claws he managed

KIDS CORNER - STORY to cling on and scratched and bounded upwards until he was almost at the top. He only had one more jump to go and he would be outside.

Unfortunately he misjudged his jump and instead of leaping outside he fell into the protruding funnel and disappeared inside the machine.

Fortunately it was at that precise moment that the machine belched and made its first cloud.

As the cloud floated up, Violet landed with a thud and a splash into it. This cloud wasn’t soft and fluffy like the other clouds he had just been on, but was harder and much, much wetter.

He frantically doggy-paddled his way to the edge of the cloud and clung on for dear life as he was transported up out of the funnel and down near to the children.

“I told you it would work.” Alex shrieked, but Strato shook his head. “This isn’t a cloud I’ve ever seen before.” He said. “It’s the wrong fuel. We can’t live on this cloud.”

“Of course you can. I’ll show you.” Alex leaped up and landed with a splash on the brown cloud.

He disappeared from view as the water surged up over his head before he reappeared coughing and spluttering.

Violet thought Alex had come to rescue him and leaped on his head. “Ow!” Yelled Alex as Violet’s claws dug into his scalp.

Everyone laughed at the comical sight but Strato pulled the cloud towards him and helped Alex climb out of the swimming pool.

“I told you it was the wrong type of cloud.” He said as Violet jumped into Molly’s arms and rubbed his wet head in her face. ***** Alex and Molly’s Granddad was in his garden weeding. He was

very proud of his garden but everything looked parched because of the hot summer, even though he watered it every day.

Just as he tugged at a stubborn dandelion root he felt a few drops of water on his head. “Strange, they didn’t forecast rain today.”

He mumbled to himself as he looked up at the brilliant blue cloudless sky.

It was at that moment that Alex jumped into the cloud and splashed around and the water fell on his Granddad. He rushed into his shed and put his gardening tools away, pleased that at last it was raining. However, he looked in his neighbours gardens and they remained dry. For some reason it was only raining in his garden. He shook his head. “No one will ever believe me.” He sighed. ***** Back up on the clouds a soaking wet Alex was arguing with Tom. “I told you potatoes wouldn’t work.” Tom shouted. “No you didn’t.” Alex retorted.

Strato silenced them both when he told them they would have to clean out the chamber. “What?”

They both stared at Strato. “You need to clean it so the right fuel will work.” He said as they walked back to the machine.

Near the entrance was a huge door that Strato pulled open.

“Just go down that ladder and start cleaning.” Alex and Tom looked down into the gaping hole.

“Here you are; cloths and

sponges. Make sure you do a good job.”

Beauty & Bubbles Ladies Pamper and Shopping Evening

F

riday 9th February, at Crosshall Junior School in Eaton Socon, saw lots of women come together in what is becoming an annual event to help Team Emilio raise money for their run in the London Marathon. They are raising funds for The Neuro Foundation.

What better excuse is there to meet up with friends whilst being pampered and taking part in some late night shopping with local businesses.

Incorporating a Catwalk, raffle and home made cakes as well, there was certainly something for everyone.

The event was another great success with over £700 raised on the night!

St Neots Mayor Charity Masqarade Ball

T

aking place on Saturday 3rd March at The Priory Centre, St Neots. The Venetian Masquerade Charity Ball was very well attended and raised a massive £3,700!

This event helps the Mayor raise money for his chosen charities and this figure will make a huge difference to their total, helping them to push towards smashing last year’s figure of £10,000.

A special mention goes to the Town Crier, Ian Payne (who was crowned at St Neots Light Switch on) and comperes Mark and Gary from BlackCat Radio.

The Mayors four chosen charities this year are 2500 St Neots Sqn ATC, Switch Now, Priory Park Infant School and Bushmead Primary School.

A

regular event in the Kimbolton calander is the Melodramatics annual Pantomime.

As always this years show didn’t disappoint. Despite the snow threatening audience attendance, many of those who couldn’t attend on the Friday night made it to the Saturday and gave the show rave reviews.

Written, produced, directed and performed by local talent it had everyone laughing and kept even the youngest audience members eagerly watching to see what would happen next.

Everyone who took part in the show should be proud of themselves as they all did a great job. Including two Stagework students from their acting course in the lead roles of Rita and Eddie.

Not many other performing arts colleges put on performances like this at public venues.

Professional set, live orchestra, five performances in a 250 seat theatre.

Paxton Pits Latest Update We are pleased to be able to share with you the latest news from Paxton Pits Nature Reserve.

ildlife is stirring in March. Come and see what white wildlife you can see at Paxton Pits.

Here are a couple you might see: Blackthorn, also known as Sloe.

The blossom appears before the leaves.

Speckled Wood butterfly. An early butterfly found in dappled shade. It feeds on honeydew at the top of trees.

Photographic Competition Overview - FREE Entry - Awards - Separate section for under 16’s The Friends of Paxton Pits is delighted to announce a Photographic Competition of images taken on and around the Reserve.

Entries can be submitted now and up to 28 February 2019, however there is also a selection for the Paxton Pits Calendar 2019 which is open until 1 July 2018.

We look forward to receiving your entries!

Prizes There will be a number of prizes and awards, from tours of Paxton Pits with head ranger Jim Stevenson, to a year’s membership of the St Neots and District Camera Club, to publication of winning photos in B Inspired Magazine.

How to enter • The Competition is open to all with a special section for those under 16 years of age as of 31 December 2018.

• Images must be submitted in digital form, and accompanied by an entry form.

• Only photographs taken from public access areas of Paxton Pits since December 2016 are eligible.

• Full details are given in the Rules, which can be found on Paxton Pits website and at the Visitors Centre.

• If your photograph contains people, please also complete the release form.
