Welcome to B Inspired Magazine, a magazine designed and created, with and for, the local community.

A

s the country starts to open up it is great to see how many people are continuing to support local and the amount of events that are now being announced.

With this in mind we are delighted to bring back our What’s On Guide!!

Just like before the pandemic we try to list all the free local and community events we are aware of, for free. If you have any events that are due to take place from September onwards and would like them included in our next issue please get in touch via our Facebook page @BInspiredMagazine or email hello@binspiredmag.co.uk If you are a new reader or unaware this magazine is created without profit, all money goes back into the printing, distribution... therefore the more adverts the higher the distribution area, but also crucially the more pages we can give free to community groups to feature for free.

For example one company advertising could mean that they give free space to a school, charity or group - we can even let the company choose who they want to support.

So please keep supporting and giving our community a free voice.

THE PICTUREBOOKS Every issue local resident, Cory, provides us with his own music interviews.

Cory is local and presents Rock Into The Weekend on Feedback Radio as well as on London based Total Rock, joining esteemed rock journalists such as Malcom Dome and Dom Lawson among others.

T

his issue, Cory chats to Claus Grabke & Philipp Mirtschink better known as The Picturebooks.

Hailing from Gütersloh, Germany, this blues-rock duo met in their local skatepark and realised they shared the same musical tastes and started to write songs in the same garage where they repaired and refurbished motorcycles in 2009.

With a handful of releases including “Imaginary Horse”, “Home Is A Heartache” & “The Hands Of Time”, they give Cory an insight into their productive lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic.

You went out and filmed a new video in Berlin recently, is this 4

a sign that there is new material being worked on?

We as The Picturebooks decided to record a whole album with featured artists, particularly vocalists that we are into, any kind of singer we’re a fan or friends with.

The first person we asked was Dennis Lyxen of Refused if he would be into it and he was, that’s where it all clicked.

We went to Sweden to record with him and it was so awesome and inspiring, it was the first time we have worked with someone else, to see how another artists works.

Everything we do is “learning by doing” and always has been.

We’ve never had the chance to see how other people do things.

It was cool to have a chance to go into the Refused practice room and

record it there.

This was when we started thinking about doing a whole album like this with other artists.

The next single that we recorded was with Lzzy Hale of Halestorm, then you have Neil Fallon of Clutch coming in and there’s a whole album now with artists of that calibre, singers and musicians that we’re into singing songs that we have written and recorded.

We send them the files and they work on it in their own time, calling you back and saying how excited and inspired they are by the process.

It’s been so much fun.

With Lzzy & Neil on board we then had bands like Black Stone Cherry, Monster Truck, more and more bands were starting to get on board.

Again, it was so much fun.

You had teased a couple of collaborations but it’s surprising that you’ve made a whole album of collaborations, you’ve also been teasing something called “The Major Minor Collective”, assuming this is an album title?

Exactly, it’s the title.

The Major Minor Collective by The Picturebooks.

The cool thing is we have one song that we will release that anyone can do what they like with it, whether it’s a band, a fan, anyone can make the song do their own take on it and we’ll release it.

It could be a hip-hop artist going crazy with it and turning it into this hip-hop song or some singer who has some lyrics for it that they can record it, send it to us and we will release it.

You’re asking fans to contribute to an album with amazing vocalists like Neil Fallon & Lzzy Hale, that’s quite intimidating!

That’s the thing, we’re trying to do the most positive thing we can do.

When we had the idea, it felt like the most positive thing ever, we can connect people with people that they might be into that’s not us.

Whether that’s Lzzy Hale, Black Stone Cherry or someone unknown yet.

It’s made for a lot of positivity, it can’t be bad, there’s so much good in it.

Did you experiment musically with different artists in mind?

It was liberating and interesting to write songs for an album like this, at some point we knew that this is where the album was going.

It made us try stuff out that we wouldn’t have done if it was just a new Picturebooks album, it made

us more risky and try out some new stuff.

We learned a lot from that and can’t wait to show people and hope it opens doors for us musically and in our career.

So will it be a new single once a month until the album is released?

What about tour dates?

Six singles until the album drops, one released every month with the album dropping on 3rd September.

We’re talking 2022 for when our tour is going to happen, we made the clever choice when the world went south to move the tour to 2022 as we thought it would take longer to recover than others thought.

We blocked dates in all the venues in early 2020, in the UK we’re hitting Manchester, Glasgow, London, Bristol, Sheffield & Birmingham.

The cool thing is by then we will have another Picturebooks album out early 2022, we’re trying to make the best out of this situation.

With the new album, is it going to be what we’re used to with the last few albums or have you tried anything different?

When I said about The Major Minor Collective opening doors, it inspired us to be more risky and try stuff out.

We like being uncomfortable and going wherever we feel like without being stuck somewhere.

It will definitely have a new approach to what The Picturebooks are but it will still be us.

This is the first interview where we’re talking about this so we don’t really have the words yet, while I’m talking I’m realizing all we’ve done over the last few months.

Hunts Community Cancer Network

Every issue our cover stars are a local individual or group with an inspirational story to share.

This issue we are featuring a team of fantastic volunteers who are all helping others at their time of need - Hunts Community Cancer Network (HCCN).

W

orking together and delivering a home based nursing service, HCCN’s aim is to help people who are recovering from or living with cancer in the Hunts area to take back their lives and to play an active part in managing their health. The team is based at the Woodlands Cancer unit at Hinchingbrooke Hospital and they see patients at home, at work, in the hospital or even somewhere neutral for a cup of coffee if necessary.

Better Survival Rates HCCN’s goal is to encourage a more objective view of cancer and to help people understand the trajectory of cancer is ever changing. Increasingly cancer can be lived with in the same way as other long-term conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and asthma, particularly when individuals are actively involved in managing their health.

There are 2 million people in England with a diagnosis of cancer.

This number is likely to grow by more than 3% per year, reflecting the increasing incidence of cancer and better survival rates.

By 2030 there are likely to be around 4 million cancer survivors in the UK.

Providing Care Evidence shows that the current model of cancer follow-up is not meeting people’s needs and will not cope if the number of people living with cancer increases at the expected rate.

While the NHS funds the nursing service through CCG funding (Clinical Commissioning Groups which replaced Primary Care Trusts), everyone involved in running the charity volunteers their time freely and we strive to keep our costs low.

More than Nursing HCCN doesn’t just offer nursing care. We believe that the best way to help people get their lives back on track after cancer is to equip them with the skills they need in order to play a full part in managing their health now and into the future.

Sometimes that means helping people develop new habits, perhaps around exercise or diet, but it also means supporting people whilst they manage their emotional responses to their illness and get back on track to rebuild their lives positively.

HCCN marked as Excellent HCCN the Charity is proud to be awarded the Charity Excellence Quality Mark. This is in recognition of the ongoing promotion of good governance and maximisation of strategic impact. For effectively leading and managing people and capitalising on operational delivery. Gifting the house away now would be a deprivation of assets, so would not be allowed.

YOUR STORIES TILLY TRIMBLE INVESTIGATES Local children’s author, Karen Larkins, shares with us another of her stories.

The story so far:- Tilly’s investigation of why a holly wreath is still hanging on a front door in the spring and where the family who live there is, is continuing. She has now found out what the curse was, but doesn’t know its meaning and she has met the former owner of the house; a very ugly old woman whom Tilly suspects is a witch. The investigation continues.

PART 8 “Are you sure you don’t want to come to the park?” Tilly’s Mum asked her as she strapped Matthew in his buggy.

“I’d rather stay at home today.”

Tilly replied and bolted the front door once her Mum and brother had left.

Tilly ran up to her room and got her notebook out of her drawer to study her notes. She was deep in thought when she heard a muffled sobbing sound.

She looked around her room but everything was normal, so she decided it must be coming from outside. She moved over to the window, but couldn’t see anyone as the pavement and road were empty. She heard the noise again and listened intently. It seemed to be coming from her shelves.

She walked over and looked at her cuddly toys, all lined up in a tidy row and stared at the china

figurine. Two trickles of water were running down the face and falling onto the china clothes.

Tilly picked up the figure, wiped the water away and looked up at the ceiling, thinking perhaps there was a leak, but the ceiling was dry. Puzzled, Tilly put the figurine in her pocket, picked up her notebook and walked down the stairs. It was such a lovely sunny day she thought she would sit in the garden to think about her investigation.

Tilly felt drowsy as she sat on the deckchair in the garden. She took the figurine out of her pocket and placed it on the plastic table to study it.

She returned to her notebook and tried to concentrate. She put the book in her pocket, lent back enjoying the feeling of the warm sun on her face and was soon fast asleep.

Tilly was roused by a rustling and tapping noise and she opened her eyes to see a crow perched on the end of the plastic table.

Tilly slowly realised that she was awake and not dreaming as the crow hopped towards the china figurine.

Tilly quickly got up and grabbed the figure. She didn’t know what to do and ran blindly around the garden.

Too late she realised that she hadn’t run towards the house, but was now standing at the bottom of

the garden.

The crow was still on the table and seemed to be watching her intently.

If Tilly didn’t know that crows couldn’t smile, she could have sworn that this crow was smiling at her, and not in a good way. The crow flapped its large wings and landed on the grass in front of her.

Tilly panicked and wanted to kick the crow, but she couldn’t be mean to any creatures, even one that kept attacking and frightening her.

Tilly froze as she couldn’t believe what was now happening.

The crow seemed to be changing shape and growing larger and larger.

Instead of bird’s claws it wore black steel-toe capped boots; instead of feathers it wore a black cloak, instead of a beak it had a crooked nose poking out of wrinkly layers of skin.

Tilly was now staring at the old woman she had encountered on her doorstep the day before.

“It’s me my dear.” The old woman said and as she spoke she spat tiny specks of spittle all over Tilly and the china figure Tilly was still holding.

“I’ve come for the property you stole from me my dear.” She stretched out a hand towards the figurine and Tilly watched mesmerised as her folded flesh wobbled as she moved.

“No!” Tilly shouted and, just before the woman touched the figure, she turned and ran towards the back gate. She fumbled with the latch before finally managing to open the gate and ran and ran without looking back.

Tilly only stopped running when she reached the park. She slumped onto a bench and puffed and panted. Leaning her back against the wooden slats she closed her eyes.

So that old woman was a witch and the witch was the crow.

Tilly shivered and wished she’d never started this investigation.

“Are you alright?” Tilly opened her eyes and saw the face of the kindly man she always met in the park. He was still wearing his reddish brown overcoat and yellow boots.

“I’m okay now. I had to run away from a witch.” Tilly said without thinking.

“A witch eh? I have heard there’s one or two about here.”

He said and Tilly thought he was laughing at her.

“She’s an old woman and she keeps trying to take my china figurine.” Tilly wasn’t sure why she was confiding in this man.

“Now why would she do that?”

He said.

“I dunno.” Tilly looked at the china figure she was still clutching in her sweaty hand.

“Why don’t you give it to her then?”

“I can’t do that, it doesn’t belong to her. It belongs to a..a.. friend of mine.”

“I see.” The man rubbed his chin. “Can I have a look at this figure?”

Tilly looked into the old man’s eyes and saw only kindness there, so she opened her hand and let him inspect it.

“I think there could be more to this figure than you think.” He said. “It looks too lifelike to be made of china.” Tilly had to agree with him. “I think it could be a real person who’s been turned into china.”

Tilly’s eyes opened wide in astonishment. This old man must be making fun of her, but then again lots of strange things were happening at the moment, and the old woman had to be a witch.

Tilly put the figure in her pocket and took her notebook out. “Well the old woman did curse the house. The grumpy old man who lives next door told me all about it.” She said as she inspected her notes.

“Can I see what you’ve written down? I’m good with things like that.” Tilly let him see her notebook and pointed to the place where she’d written down the curse as she’d remembered it. The man concentrated on the page for what seemed like hours until he said “I don’t think that grumpy man, as you called him, got the words quite right, but I suppose we’ll have to use them as they’re all

we’ve got to work with.”

Tilly looked blankly at him.

“I think I know what this means, and I think I know how we can help that poor china girl.”

“Do you really think she’s a real girl then?” Tilly was incredulous.

“That would explain why it’s so lifelike.”

Tilly remembered the water she’d seen on the figure earlier and wondered if it had been the girl crying. “But what about her parents? I didn’t see any other china figures there.”

“Maybe we should just concentrate on helping this girl first and then worry about her parents later.” The man smiled at Tilly.

“I’m Tilly by the way. What’s your name?” Tilly thought they should know each other’s names if they were going to be friends.

“Mr Curtis.” He replied.

“How come you know so much about this?” Tilly asked.

“Knowledge comes with age.”

He replied mysteriously and rubbed his nose with his finger.

“Now, I’ll tell you what you have to do.”
