Hello!

Welcome to B Inspired Magazine, a magazine designed and created, with and for, the local community.

I

t was five years ago (September 2016) that I started B Inspired Magazine.

Designed from the beginning to be a magazine that gives back to the local community, I set this up as a sideline, non-profit making business, to offer my expertise in marketing to others who needed a leg up to showcase what they were getting up to in the local area.

From our competitions, free exposure in our What’s On Guides and local business pages, to sharing front cover star stories, as well as interviews, reviews, stories, pictures and more, we have certainly covered a great array of what happens in our local area.

A special thank you also goes to our advertisers. We deliberately do not have many, as content from the local area is of paramount importance, but those we do have help offer extra spaces for the community to share their news/stories for free, as well as paying for the print and distribution. Over the past 5 years we have increased distribution to homes in many areas, and this is something we would love to expand on, so if you would like to advertise in future issues please get Katie Kitson in touch.

PLANET FATALE Every issue local resident, Cory, provides us with his own music interviews.

Cory is local and presents Rock Into The Weekend on Feedback Radio as well as on London based Total Rock, joining esteemed rock journalists such as Malcom Dome and Dom Lawson among others.

C

ambridge rock band Planet Fatale formerly known as Powderhead have recently announced the release date for their debut album.

Cory met up with Helen (vocals), Miller (bass) & Simon (guitar) from the band in June to discuss the name change and release of their single Talking to Myself.

Their debut album The Cycle Repeats is out on 17th September: What’s Planet Fatale?

Helen: It took us quite a long time to come up with this name, we went through lots and lots of discussions until we finally reached it. We’ve got a bit of a B-Movie vibe going, we focused on that as the image we want to portray so we came up with Fatale at first but added Planet onto 4

it. Adding Planet at the front added a kind of film noire / B-Movie theme we were going for.

You’ve got a couple of new members too which is part of the reason for the name change?

Helen: We have Simon who is on guitar . . .

Miller: and Chris on other guitar.

We don’t really call them lead or rhythm guitar players as they kind of mix them up.

We should say that we are talking just before your first physical gig after lockdown, which must be weird?

Helen: We’ve done a few live streams in the mean time. That’s been fantastic and we’ve had a great response, it’s been awesome to have

people at a show from all over the world which has been pretty cool.

The live streams were good for things like that but there’s nothing like being in the room when you’re playing live to a live audience so we’re really looking forward to that tonight.

Is tonight the official live launch of Planet Fatale then?

Helen: I suppose it is! I’ve never really thought about that . . .

MIller: It’s kind of our single release show really as the single came out yesterday. We just wanted to do a live show for that really.

We’ve had to abide by the covid rules and keep it seated and stuff which is annoying but it’s just how it is.

You mentioned the new single, you’ve also released a video too which definitely has the same B-Movie vibe you were talking about, how was the recording of that?

Miller: The song is called Talking to Myself and was recorded with Russ Russel at Parlour Studios. It felt like we put a lot into this and wanted to push it quite hard and the video was done by Marianne Harris and recorded at the chalk pits in Cambridge.

Helen: We wanted a desert but we live in Cambridge so what do we do? We managed to find one in Cambridge when we did a photo shoot at the chalk pits with Danny Ackerley in April/May time. When we went back with Marianne to do the video later in the year it was more green than we would have liked so we had to scratch around to find the best desert-y bits. It was either that or pay a lot for planes!

So recording with Russ Russell (produced bands such as Napalm Death, The Wildhearts & Raging Speedhorn) must have been pretty amazing?

Miller: That was epic, he is a dude! It was a really good experience.

Simon: When we went to record the guitar solo for this single, I had all these ideas but couldn’t quite figure out the best order to put everything in so Russ & I sat down together and recorded all these little parts we could chop and change around until we got it. It’s probably one of my favourite solos I’ve ever recorded and now I can play the whole thing in one take which is really nice! It was amazing to have the chance to work with someone who has such a creative mind. I guess when you’re just starting out you don’t get that sort of person to

work with a lot of the time. There’s a lot of engineers out there who will just press record whereas Russ really makes you work hard. If you play something that’s a bit crap, he will tell you it’s a bit crap. He can be brutal but you come out with your best work. We stayed there for a week recording so it was a great experience.

It feels like with the name change, new members etc that things have stepped up a level for you, would you agree?

Helen: When Simon and Chris joined there was obviously going to be a new sound with two new guitarists bringing a lot of influences with them, it’s made the band heavier than we were before. The rest of us are really on board with that. Working with Russ as well, he produces a lot of metal bands.

It added that lovely, gritty vibe that we wanted. It’s made it a fantastic sounding album that we can’t wait for everyone to hear. You can hear it within “Talking to Myself ” which is really one of the lighter sounding songs on the album. Expect some heavy.

What changes can we expect on this album?

Miller: We’ve all got different influences so we kind of brought

them all together, we didn’t intentionally go for anything genre wise per se. We just write what we write then hash it all out together.

We all love it.

Simon: It’s a lot more varied than previous Powderhead material.

Even with the working titles of songs you can see where the influences are coming from. There’s so many different influences on the album now, I think it shows with the variety of the songs. It’s not an album you listen to three tracks and say “I’ve heard the album now” because you haven’t. You’re going to carry on listening. I think people will find something new with every listen.

Helen: When we finally had the full collection of songs for the album, I think that was when I realised how proud of it I am. Each one has it’s own personality which I really love.

The album is out in September?

Helen: 17th September. Then we have a tour to support it, fingers crossed! I hope we’re not being too optimistic but we have it booked to start on 23rd September at Club 85 in Hitchin. We have 10 dates so far and may be adding more.

ALEX LARKINS: RUNNING THE LONDON MARATHON IN MEMORY OF MY GRANDAD, AND RAISING MONEY FOR SUE RYDER Every issue our cover stars are a local individual or group with an inspirational story to share.

This issue our cover star is local lad, Alex Larkins, who is more akin to lifting weights and resting, than running. Alex shares his story of why, how and the hiccups in the road.

ou would expect upon finding out that Alex was previously a personal trainer that he would be made for running the London Marathon, but as Alex focused on lifting weights, he is (was) the first to admit that he is no runner. Despite this on Sunday 3rd October 2021, Alex will be running the 26.2 miles required.

Alex shares with us his journey so far, and how he is doing all of this in his Grandads’ name, Edward Smith, whilst raising money for Sue Ryder.

Made for the London Marathon?

As a personal trainer in my previous life, many would see me running the London Marathon as a rather simple thing to do.

The problem is that making assumptions is a mistake waiting to happen.

When we assume something, we can often take it for granted and not truly give it the devotion it really needs.

Running a Marathon is an extremely tough challenge, not just physically but mentally.

It’s waking up early on the wet

mornings to get miles into your legs, it’s sacrificing late nights with family and friends just to make sure you are prepared for the next day. It’s not something that you can just get up and do, it takes months of preparation and dedication.

Ideal Build for Running?

When we look at professional runners today, they are quite small and slim, they are built for running.

The general population do not have this luxury, we are all shapes and sizes.

running down the street and judge their appearance or assume they wouldn’t be able to achieve their goal.

In the world today we should be encouraging each other.

I have seen so many individuals prove their doubters wrong, and this brings me such satisfaction and inspiration.

I currently stand at 6’4 and weight 100kg, definitely not a running physique.

Cardio also isn’t my strength, I prefer lifting weights, and resting between sets. Cardio doesn’t allow rest until the job is done.

Challenging Ourselves So why do we do this to ourselves? Well, do we really want to live in a world where we don’t challenge ourselves, to go through life without achieving anything? I certainly don’t.

Running the London Marathon has been on my bucket list since I was a teen. For the last 10 years I would apply through the ballot, but I never got a space. Even though I was disappointed a small part of me would actually be relieved as I knew how much of a challenge it was.

Learning from my Grandad A few years ago, things changed.

My grandad fell ill and sadly lost his life.

He was always the spark that would light up every room he entered. He lived his life to his full.

He didn’t sit and wait for things to happen, he made them happen.

That mentality was something that I lacked, and I knew I had to change.

The next time I applied for the Marathon I wanted to give myself every chance that I would be selected. I decided to apply through Sue Ryder hospice.

I chose this charity as the Moggerhanger site supported my grandad through the final stages of his life. They provided such amazing care so raising money as a way of saying thank you was the least I could do.

Sue Ryder Sue Ryder supports people through the most difficult times of their lives. Whether that’s a terminal illness, the loss of a loved one or a neurological condition – they’re there when it matters.

Their doctors, nurses and carers give people the compassion and expert care they need to help them live the best life they possibly can.

London Marathon Journey Starts Initially I was unsuccessful in my application, but two months later I received a call saying I had a place.

I immediately accepted.

Training The training, the dreaded training. Where to begin? Let’s just say I knew very little about marathon training.

All I knew was you had to run 26.2 miles and the only way to achieve this was to get miles in your legs.

Training Plan The important thing about training is to have a plan.

My plan was simple, set a target each week. Gradually build up miles and get your body accustomed to reaching these distances. Complete a 5km, then 10km and keep building.

More than Running You quickly find out, as I have, that there is so much more to consider than just running.

You need to consider what you wear, what trainers you run in, what nutrition is needed for long runs.

Everyone is unique and has different requirements so it’s important to test out what works for you.

Changing my running apparel has benefited me in so many ways.

My comfort levels during a run increased significantly, no longer did my feet hurt from not having the support from my trainers.

The Barriers These horrible things that try and detour us from completing our goal. Life always seems to throw hurdles at us. Some for example, requiring us to rest if we get injured.

These barriers may slow us down, but we can’t let them defeat us, we must find the power to jump over them.

We have all suffered through lockdown, it has prevented us from doing a lot and has caused us mental stress.

Together, we have all managed to push pass that moment which

COVER STAR means we can continue to push past other barriers. In my training I was running 10 miles, an achievement I’d never done before then boom…

Covid I went from running 3-4 times a week to isolation and barely moving more than 100 steps.

Even after isolation I didn’t feel myself and I ended up having a month off.

When I got back into training, I found that running just 5km was a struggle.

Mental Impact Physically I wasn’t where I wanted to be and that caused a lot of mental stress. A battle of the mind, trying to constantly persuade yourself that you can achieve your goal.

Mental blocks are not easy to overcome so it’s important to talk about it and allow others to support you. Your family and friends can help provide you with that confidence and reassurance you need.

Picking Myself Back Up I competed in my first ever half

marathon event a few weeks back.

I didn’t think I was ready; I had a huge mental block, but my wife believed in me and reminded me why I was doing it.

With the support I received I managed to get to the event and prepared myself for a distance I had yet to achieve in training.

I collected my number and went through my final preparations.

I was anxious and waiting for the race to start. I had so many thoughts going through my head then suddenly a voice next to me asked how I was.

Support The thing I didn’t anticipate, the running community. The whole race I was running with fellow runners, complete strangers, but at that time they were my friends.

We supported each other from start to finish and the feeling of seeing the finish line with your family and the crowd encouraging you is second to none.

Marathon is only a few short weeks away.

I am not focused on time, the achievement to even complete the Marathon is an achievement in itself.

We may have our own fitness journeys and face different barriers but one thing that we will always have in common is that this journey is one we will always remember for the rest of our lives.

hen you make your lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA), you get to choose who to appoint as your attorney or attorneys.

What do they do?

That person will make decisions on your behalf, should you lose mental capacity. That can be for either health and welfare and/ or property and financial affairs, depending on which LPA you are making, if not both. Although the property and financial affairs LPA can be used when you’ve still got capacity if you choose that option, whereas health and welfare can’t.

But what happens if one or all of your attorneys: • pass away?

• lose mental capacity?

• divorce or terminate a civil partnership with you (the donor)?

• become bankrupt?

• no longer wish to act as the attorney?

Replacement In this case you can nominate one or more attorneys to step in to act and make decisions with the same powers as the original attorney(s). It is important

to consider how replacement attorneys are appointed to ensure that your wishes are met.

YOUR STORIES TILLY TRIMBLE INVESTIGATES Local children’s author, Karen Larkins, shares with us another of her stories.

The story so far:- Tilly’s investigation of why a holly wreath is still hanging on a front door in the spring and what happened to the missing family is continuing. She has discovered that the old woman who lived in 64 Carters Way is a witch who prefers to be a crow.

The witch has cursed the house and turned the girl who lives there into a china figurine. Tilly and the kind man in the park, Mr Curtis, are trying to reverse the curse.

PART 9 Tilly stared at her notebook and then stared at Mr Curtis.

“I can help you, but as you found the figurine, you’re going to have to be the one to turn her back into a person. You need to collect everything that’s needed and reverse the curse.”

Tilly reached into her pocket for her pencil. “What things do I need to collect?” She asked.

“Well, you’re going to have to collect three things. Something that belongs to the girl, something from the witch and something that makes you face your greatest fear.”

Tilly scribbled everything down in her notebook. She thought it would be easy to get something belonging to Henrietta. She remembered that was the name she had found inside the girl’s

diary. All she had to do was to go back to the house and take something from her bedroom, but the second thing?

“What would I have to get from the witch?” Tilly shivered even thinking about her.

“I wouldn’t go near her when she’s in human form, but when she’s a crow, that will be easier.

You’ve found her nest haven’t you? It will be best to go there at night when she’ll be sleeping and take one of her tail feathers. Not one that’s already dropped mind, you’ll need a nice fresh one, one you’ve pulled out yourself.”

Tilly wrote all this down with a shaking hand and then looked at Mr Curtis.

He could see the fear in her eyes. “You’ll be fine, taking one of her tail feathers will not only help you reverse the curse but will weaken her and her powers.”

Tilly nodded. She was frightened but knew she would have to do it.

“Well, what’s your greatest fear then?” Mr Curtis asked Tilly.

“The witch.” She said.

“Maybe she’s your greatest fear now, but you’ve only known about her for five minutes, there must be something else you’ve been scared of for most of your life.”

Tilly thought about this. She wasn’t too keen on the dark but she could put up with that and then she remembered. “Spiders!”

She said. “I hate spiders!”

“That’s good.” Mr Curtis said. “A spider will fit in very well.

If you were frightened of heights we might have had a problem, but a spider will work very well.” Mr Curtis smiled; he was very pleased that at last he had found someone who could help him destroy the witch for good.

Tilly wrote down ‘spider’ and asked what she should do next.

“You need to collect all these three things together and put them in a jam jar. It doesn’t matter what size of jar, just as long as you can fit everything in it.

Tilly nodded. “Even the spider?”

“Even the spider.” Mr Curtis patted Tilly on the head to try and calm her as he could tell she was worried.

“But I can’t touch a spider, how will I get it to go in a jar?”

Tilly was frightened at even the thought of spiders.

“Well that’s the whole point of facing your greatest fear.” Mr Curtis said calmly. “You have to pick it up and put it in the jar. The spell won’t work if you cheat and get someone else to do it, or make the spider fall in all by itself. You

have to pick it up.”

Tilly stared at her notebook and wondered how on earth she would be able to pick up a spider but then she knew she had to save Henrietta.

Mr Curtis continued talking.

“The tail feather should be the last object you collect as it will need to be fresh with a speck of blood on the end. Once everything is inside the jar, screw the lid on tightly and lay it on the ground next to the china figurine and say the spell three times. Then open the jar and tip the contents out onto the china figure, but you must make sure that all three things touch it at the same time, otherwise it won’t work and you’ll be back to square one.”

Tilly’s hand flew across the page of her notebook as she wrote everything down and turned the page.

“What’s the spell?” She asked.

“I’ll tell you this very slowly so you have time to write it down correctly. It must be recited exactly as I say it now otherwise the spell won’t work.” Mr Curtis very slowly said each word of the spell and watched as Tilly wrote it down, making sure every word was correct before he moved to the next one. “Okay, now read it

out to me.”

He said.

Tilly sat upright, held her notebook up in front of her face and read the words.

“Within this jar three things I’ve placed.

The good, the evil, the fear I’ve faced.

I command the good, that’s true and strong, to conquer evil and right this wrong.”

Tilly looked up at Mr Curtis.

“Very good, now make sure you say it in exactly that order, the good, the evil, the fear.”

Tilly nodded her head. “I know, otherwise the spell won’t work.” She shrugged her shoulders and put her notebook and pencil back in her pocket.

“When do you think I should do it?” She asked.

“There’s no time like the present.” Mr Curtis said. “You can collect the first two things today and come to the park tonight to take the crow feather.

Don’t forget to bring the jar and figure with you as the feather won’t stay fresh for long. Then you can perform the spell here in the park. It will be perfect, no-one will be about to see what you’re doing.”

“But what about the crow?

Won’t she attack me for taking her tail feather?” Tilly sat with her eyes wide open in terror just thinking about it. “She could wake up and turn me into something too, or take the figure

from me, or the jam jar, or even break the jar. What will happen then?” Tilly’s imagination was running wild.

“Calm down Tilly.” Mr Curtis said in a very calm voice. “I told you; once you pull the feather from her tail you’ll weaken her magic powers for a while. There’s nothing for you to worry about.”

Tilly thought about this and thought it was okay for Mr Curtis to say that, but it wasn’t him who had to get the feather.

Mr Curtis repeated everything Tilly had to do again and again until Tilly’s head was spinning with all the information and the terror that was inside her.

“The first time you say the spell, say it in a whisper, the second time a little louder and make sure you shout it out as loudly as you can for the third time.”

Tilly retrieved her notebook and pencil and started scribbling down this new information. As she wrote Mr Curtis placed one hand on Tilly’s head and Tilly felt a tingling sensation.

“Good luck Tilly.” Mr Curtis said and Tilly looked up to say goodbye but there was no-one there. Mr Curtis had already gone. Tilly looked around her, but all she saw was a red kite swooping around in the sky above her.
