Hello!

Welcome to B Inspired Magazine, a magazine designed and created, with and for, the local community.

W

hat a fantastic response we had to our Mothers Day Competition! Thank you to everyone who took part, and nominated someone, we had amazing mums entered, and were pleased that we didn’t have to choose ourselves, and instead relied on the ever faithful lucky dip. Congratulations to Sara, Cate and Simay who all won. You can see more pictures and read about our photoshoot makeover on page 10.

Another competition we were proud to be a part of was with Paxton Pits. We had to choose who we believed to have taken the best photo from the local area.

It was an incredibly hard decision but after a lot of debate we all agreed that John Greig was the rightful winner, and are proud to display more of his pictures in our centre spread. All winners and those highly commended will appear in an exhibition at St Neots Museum from 1st May - 8th June, admission is free to local residents and a small charge for visitors.

In a write-up all about Competitions, we are also excited to announce the release of our next one, this time for an Easter Egg! (Find out more on page 35.)

This month Katie is talking about building a strong recognisable brand.

S

ince writing these articles we often get asked extra questions about marketing, but the one that always seems to be asked is: ‘What is branding and how do I make sure people remember me?’

This is a topic we have answered before but is proving so popular that I felt it appropriate to revisit.

Getting Noticed You can of course spend a lot of money on something extravagant or go crazy and do something a little bit out there to get noticed, but as our social media feeds show, people get bored easily.

Of course, people will focus on something for a given time, but something new always comes along that is more interesting to talk about, which leaves you hoping you will be remembered 4

for the right reasons, and depending on what you did to get the attention in the first place can seriously affect this.

If, however you have a strong brand, regardless of whether people find a new topic to talk about, you will still be memorable and recognisable, whether you are at the forefront of their minds or not.

“Your brand is what other people say about you when you’re not in the room”.

Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon.

What is a brand and is there a difference between a brand and branding?

YES! Most people think they are the same, and in short believe it is their logo.

Your logo does form part of your brand but there is a lot more to it if you want to create a recognisable and memorable brand/company.

Think of it like judging a book by its cover:

A brand is split into two categories ‘a brand’ and ‘branding’.

What is a brand/branding?

Firstly they are two different entities: branding is only one element of building a successful brand.

Brand = Identity.

Who you are, what you do, how you are perceived – your reputation “Whatever your customer says it is” or:

Branding = part of the process to creating your brand.

It is the look that you give your business and when done well attracts your ideal clients and makes you memorable.

The look is what you see in the first instance and will be what makes the first contact. (Branding.)

Once you open the book up you start to get a feel for what it is about – its personality. (Brand.)

Creating/Enhancing your brand.

Write down how you want your company to be seen and remembered, and create a guide that is unique to you and your business, that you can stick to.

If you are not sure where to start, talk to your customers and people who know your business to see how they already see your business and then build from there.

To help further I have created my 7 steps to help you build a strong brand strategy.

7 Steps to Creating a Strong Brand Strategy: 1. Purpose – Think about the bigger picture for your business, and not just ‘to make money’.

For example IKEA’s isn’t just to sell furniture it is to “create a better everyday life”.

Any emotion you can add will help you connect with your audience.

2. Competitor Awareness – Look at competitors as a challenge to improve your own strategy and create a better brand overall, but don’t become a copycat.

Stay true to who you are.

3. Consistency – It is a word I use a lot.

Avoid always talking about things that are not related to you or enhance your brand.

People need to know who you are.

Think of Coca Cola, they have multiple products but have the same image running throughout all their campaigns and platforms, which therefore makes them one of the most recognisable brands in the world.

We obviously don’t all have the luxury of their budget, but the same principles apply.

4. Flexibility – Many could see this is as a contradiction to consistency, but consistency sets your brand standard, and flexibility allows you to stand out from your competitors, meaning you can be more creative, and keep things “fresh”.

5. Emotion – People aren’t always rational.

They want to create a relationship – why else would someone pay more for a Ferrari than an equally well-made cheaper car?

Connecting with your customers on a deeper, more emotional level will help them connect with your brand and help create a desire to use you over your competitors.

6. Employee Involvement – If you employ people it is important that they are aware of who your company is and how it behaves, to keep consistency.

The way your team interact with customers should be the same as you portray yourselves.

For example, if you are an old

fashioned bank and have people answering the phone saying ‘Hi, how are ya?’, when all your material showcases stereotypical old fashioned manners, it isn’t going to work very well.

7. Loyalty – If you have people who love your brand and talk about it – reward them.

Sometimes just a thank you is all that is required, but recognising them early on can help you build your returning customers – helping you to generate more profit for your business.

 Insurance Check with your home contents insurance that you are covered for the move and change to the new address for the day you move in.

 Utilities Make arrangements for gas, water and electricity meters to be read and arrange to take over these at your new address.

Change Of Address

 Telecommunications Notify your telephone and broadband provider to make arrangements for disconnecting at your previous address and installing items at your new address.

Tell companies and organisations that you are moving:  Employer (or tax office if you are self-employed)  Schools  Inland Revenue  Local Council

 Post Look into re-directing your post for when you move.

 Children Look into the possibility of having small children stay with family or friends on the day of the move.

 Pets Make arrangements for the address on your pet’s microchip to be changed.

MOTHERS DAY COMPETITION COVER STARS Every issue our cover star is a local individual or group with an inspirational story to share.

This issue we chose to highlight some very special Mums who had been nominated in our Mothers Day Competition.

F

ollowing on from the success of our Mothers Day Photoshoot last year, we decided to do the same again.

We were inundated with entries via Facebook, email and website enquiries and our nomination forms. All mums were very deserving of the prize and in honesty we were pleased that we didn’t have to choose the winners ourselves - a good old lucky dip

took the strain instead.

Cate Saunderson, Simay Aktas Tekeli, and Sara Martin were drawn at random and announced as the winners of the competition via a live Facebook video.

We were delighted that all winners could take part, and knew that we were in for another great event.

This year helping us put the event together was Kate Clement,

from Honeycomb Photography, and Renee Bridges from La Powder Box, who weas on make-up. Both companies took part in this event with us last year and it was brilliant to have them involved again. We are also delighted to welcome Steph Ryan from Studio 88, who joined us for the first time as our hair stylist. A fantastic team who certainly helped to make everyone feel special.

Sara Nominated by Michelle Jarvis we were a little worried to start with whether Sara would be joining us.

Luckily Sara has some amazing friends and despite having three children - 5, 3 and 6 months - they all rallied around to look after them and twist her arm into doing it.

Sara later confessed that due to putting on extra baby weight she didn’t feel ready for anything like this, especially having not done it before, but we are sure you will agree she looks fantastic.

Many of you may recognise Sara as before going on maternity leave she could be found behind the counter at boots pharmacy, and before that used to work at the local Childrens Centre.

After the event Sara said she had to go and do the school run - she must have been the most glamorous mum on that school run!

For those that don’t know, your album “Resurrection” from last year was released under the name Michael Schenker Fest, why don’t you tell people what Michael Schenker Fest is?

Yeah, yeah sure.

Michael Schenker Fest is basically a celebration with the three original singers from MSG in the 80’s (Gary Barden, Graham Bonnet & Robin McAuley) performing the most popular music of

Michael Schenker and it is a fest, celebration time!

None of those singers would have ever thought and neither would the audience, the fans, that we would someday in the future show up together on one stage covering the whole 80’s.

It’s pretty much a miracle.

So it’s three original singers but we added Dougie White from Michael Schenker Temple Of Rock to it and so now it’s an even bigger fest.

aturday 23rd March saw many take to the Priory Centre in St Neots, dressed in their best, ahead of a great night to celebrate and raise money for local charities.

Once again the event was a great success, and the Motown theme certainly proved to be a big hit. The evening managed to raise over £2,000!!

Coffee and Cake

W

e live an area with an abundance of coffee and cake type mornings and so thought it was about time we featured one in our what’s on guide area.

This time we visited St Neots Methodist Church on Saturday 23rd February and we were not disappointed.

There was an abundance of homemade cakes including: granola, banana, Victoria sponge, chocolate cakes...

Along with cakes they also had a table of goodies available to buy on the day, which also proved to be very popular.

Complete with a childrens corner with playmats, duplo and other engaging toys, the setup catered for everyone in attendance and was a resounding success.

Charity Jigsaw Puzzle Competition

S

t Neots Mayor set-up a unique event at Loves Farm House, which saw people compete in teams to complete a puzzle in the quickest possible time.

Congratulations to The Puzzled Mares who won with an amazing time of 55 minutes to complete a 500 piece jigsaw.

2nd place went to the Puzzled Mums with a very respectable 1hr 7mins and 3rd place went to the Fork Handles with 1hr 22mins.

It was a great effort by all teams involved.

Together everyone who attended helped to raise £266.70 for local charities.

Aladdin The Magical Pantomime Adventure

anto’s are usually considered for the festive season, however, we attended this one in February!

In honesty we weren’t sure what to expect due to the time of year but were blown away by the entire production, which had everyone laughing and cheering.

We can’t wait to see their next panto in Buckden next year.

t Neots Museum is a place that always like to help entertain the children during school holidays, and February’s half term was no different.

This time their family workshop saw those who attended making clay plant pots, and upon completion, were all given soil and seeds to grow at home to take away.

Sessions ran on Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd February 11.00am 3.00pm, £4.00 per child.

Commonwealth Flag Raising

onday 11th March saw the Mayor of St Neots, raise the flag for Comonwealth Day. Try a free Pension Starting a pension at an early age with a reasonable amount is always to be encouraged especially given that employers add to it and the government give tax relief.

A 5% matched contribution can mean a basic rate tax payer has a net 4% contribution for a 10% fund.

That’s an immediate 150% growth with no risk to you and then by the time you allow for the 25% tax free return, your 4% becomes 1 ½%, for a 7 ½% return without risk, that’s a 500% return.

Over the years I have met a lot of people who have more month left than salary, but many of these smoked, had a regular drink and sky/virgin tv etc.

Accumulating Wealth Saving a little and often for a long time is the best way to accumulate wealth, but I know how difficult it can be with mortgages and school fees, and how long the mortgages are now compared to my time. But with interest rates at 2% for the last 10 years I think the 8% average which peaked at 15% meant that we didn’t have it easy.

People today have a different expectation of life and much of this I applaud because it is important to enjoy life, but enjoyment doesn’t have to cost a lot, a bit of chalk for the pavements or a den in the garden cost nothing, and I was just as happy as kids today who have a mobile phone and an IPad. Planning Ahead Whatever your age, young or

old it is never too late to look at what you want and to plan.

The story so far:- Tom had kicked Violet in anger and he had run up a tree. Billy climbed the tree after Violet, but the branch broke under his weight and he plunged into the river.

Billy can’t swim but Alex, Tom, Danny and Pete worked together to pull Billy out. However, he is lying unconscious on the ground.

Part Sixteen The four boys stared down at Billy’s lifeless body. Then Tom surprised himself as he remembered his one lesson in life saving and turned Billy onto his back before looking into his mouth for obstructions.

Alex crouched down next to Tom and also remembered breathing into the resuscitation doll.

“I can’t do the next bit.” Tom looked at Alex and Alex shrugged.

Billy’s lips were now turning blue and Alex knew it was up to him.

He squeezed Billy’s nostrils closed with one hand, closed his eyes and slowly lowered his body until his lips were touching Billy’s, then blew air into his mouth.

Billy choked. “Get off me.”

He sat up and knocked Alex off balance making him rock onto

his back, but he quickly stood up. It was always best to be on your guard and on your feet when dealing with Billy, even a weakened Billy.

“What do you think you’re doing kissing me? Yuck.” Billy wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.

“He saved your life actually.”

Tom spoke up. He was doing so many things that surprised him lately.

Billy looked at Danny and Pete whose faces were white from the shock of the situation, but they agreed with Tom. “He’s right, he pulled you out of the water, and…” Billy stood up and towered over everyone. He listened to Danny and then turned to Alex.

“Well I hope you’re not going to ask me to thank you. This just proves how weak you are. If it had been you in the water I’d have left you there.”

“Yes, you probably would have.”

Alex said as he and Tom walked

away. Alex was soaking wet and his trainers squelched as he walked. ***** The sun continued to shine in the bright blue sky. The rain dance hadn’t worked and Alex and Tom were in the bedroom of number 52, trying to think of fuel for the cloud-making machine.

Alex had been in trouble with his Mum for arriving home wet and ruining his new trainers. He tried to explain how he’d saved Billy, but she wouldn’t believe him and called it one of his tall tales.

He began to wonder whether he should tell her about the cloudmaking machine and ask her what she would use as fuel, but then decided against it in case she believed him.

As they sat on the floor deep in thought they heard laughing coming from the street below and jumped up to look out of the window.

Billy, Danny and Pete were standing in front of the house opposite looking and pointing at something in the front garden.

“How stupid is that?” Billy yelled, strolling into the front garden and picking up a brightly coloured garden gnome; its ruddy face was fixed in a permanent

smile and its hands held a fishing rod with a red fish dangling on the end of the line.

“The poor bloke’s trying to fish and there ain’t any water around.

Poor chap ain’t even got a pond to sit by, just a load of gravel ha, ha.”

He looked at Danny and Pete who also laughed. “Reckon he needs our help boys. We should take him to the river. There are plenty of fish in the river aren’t there?” Billy threw the gnome up into the air and caught it with two hands.

“Well you should know, how many fish did you see when you were in the river?” Pete spoke without thinking and immediately regretted it.

Billy glared at him, but his thoughts of punishing Pete were interrupted by someone shouting.

“Put that back where you got it from.” The lady of the house had seen everything and was now standing by her open back gate.

She was a tiny lady with little bird like features. She had tiny little black bird like eyes and a tiny beak like nose. She jumped up and down on the spot in her fury and flapped her arms by her sides

just like a bird flapping its wings.

“I know who you are, I know you’ve been in me garden before, messing up me gravel and breaking me plant pots, but at last I’ve caught you red-handed.”

“Dunno what you’re talking about.” Billy said, holding the gnome behind his back as he faced the bird lady. “We’ve never been here before, have we?” Billy looked at Danny and Pete and they both shook their heads. “Not us.” Said Danny. “Never been here before.” Agreed Pete. “I know you’re lying and this time I saw you pick up me gnome so put it back.”

The bird lady pointed an outstretched finger to the place where her gnome had once stood.

Billy stared, uncertain what to do.

Danny was getting ready to run and Pete wished he was at home.

Bored with the stalemate, the bird lady jumped forward and approached Billy.

“You think you’re clever don’t you?” She said. “But I know you’ve got me gnome behind your back, so just give it to me and we’ll say no more about it.”

For Billy giving in wasn’t an option, he wanted to have fun with the gnome but this lady was ruining his plans.

“What you mean this?” Billy brought the gnome from behind his back and threw it high up in the air. It sailed higher and higher before crashing to the ground and smashing into several pieces.

The bird lady screamed and ran into her back garden. Billy laughed loudly and picked up the fish which had disentangled itself from the fishing line and lay unbroken amongst the pieces.

“At least we can still see if this fish likes the river can’t we?”

“Well done Billy, you scared that stupid woman away.” Danny

patted Billy on the back and Billy grinned.

“Break me gnome will you?

I’ll show you.” The bird lady had re-appeared in the front garden and was armed with a bright yellow hosepipe. She pointed the nozzle at the three boys, twisted it sharply to the left and sprayed them with water.

“Oi!” Yelled Billy, and Danny and Pete performed a little jig to try and miss the water, but she skilfully sprayed all three of them.

Billy hated to give in, but the only thing he could think of to do was to run away and so he ran with Danny and Pete following closely behind him. The bird lady aimed the water straight at their retreating backs and ran after them as far as her hose would reach. When the boys were out of range she turned off the water.

She was satisfied she’d taught those boys a lesson, but was very upset at the loss of her garden gnome. She’d make sure the next one she bought lived in her back garden, away from naughty children.

Alex and Tom had watched the entire episode from the bedroom window and were now doubled up with laughter. It was so refreshing to see Billy, Danny and Pete get their comeuppance.

“Do you know what?” Said Alex, when he’d calmed down.

“What?” Asked Tom. “That lady has given me a very good idea.”

Tom looked at Alex and wondered what he was talking about.

“I think I know what the fuel could be.” He said as he left the bedroom and made his way down the stairs.

Tom was puzzled and wondered how a garden gnome could fuel the cloud-making machine.
