Barbara Won the Sweepstakes And She’s Been An Active Member of Moose #49 Over 30 Years

Barbara Wasniewski was happy to win the Bingo Bugle Monthly Sweepstakes. That’s not unusual, most people are, $100 will buy you a few Bingo cards at least. The noteworthy aspect of this story is the fact that Barbara is 91 years young. She carries herself, looks and acts like a much, much younger person. How can this be? Well, genetics may play a part, but Barbara deserves most of the credit. Barbara remains very active as a Moose Lodge member of over 30 years. Her career as a beauty operator emphasized the importance of looking your best all the time. Barbara succeeds and excells at that.

Our Sweepstakes Winner was married to her beloved Bob for 68 years. They had 4 boys, Jim, Bill, Tom and Mike. Barb’s first experience playing Bingo was in Florida where she and her late husband would “Snowbird”. She enjoyed Bingo so much that she decided to keep playing when she returned to Wisconsin. preferring to play during the day, Bingo Halls like the Moose Lodge #49 on S. 13th and Grange and American Legion #416 in Greendale are right up her alley.

We asked Barbara if she had a message that she’d like the Bingo Bugle readers to know. She said, “I want to thank all the volunteers at the Moose Club for giving up their Sundays so we can play Bingo”.

her prize check from Bob Owen (Left), Bingo Chairman at Moose Lodge #49 located at 5476 South 13th

Barbara likes playing Bingo pretty much. We’ve been told that after the restrictions of the recent pandemic were lifted, she was one of the first players to get back in the swing of things and start playing Bingo again. Like a lot of people, Barbara enjoys the social aspect of the game. She loves playing Bingo with her friend Pat Radtke and her new friend Nancy. As always we like to get the low down from the local Bingo expert, this time we talked to Bob Owen. Bob is the Bingo Chairman at the Moose Lodge. Bob reminded us that, “Moose Lodge has always been known as the friendliest Bingo game in town and

we have a great facility and a very safe parking lot. Our Bingo Hall is Handicap Accessible. We play every Sunday with sales starting at 11:30 AM and the first session begins at 12:30 PM with the second session to follow. We have all paper sheets and Progressive Bingo.” Bob is sure proud of their Bingo operation, as well he should.

Our winner Barbara told us that she’ll spend her winnings on future Bingo. That’s a good idea when you have a great place to play like Moose Lodge #49. See their ad on Page 2 of this Bingo Bugle newspaper and join Barbara for some great Bingo Fun! We’ll see you there.

Dear Aunt Bingo,

What a situation this person (Frustrated) found themselves in! Frustrating for all that were involved.

Being able to play 10 six-ons would be something I’d love to watch. I can barely keep up with 3. This person must be fast at the draw, and I wouldn’t want to get in a gun fight with them.

Readers Respond

Hello Readers:

In March we asked you to share your first encounters with Bingo. Here is an account from Shea S. of Melbourne, Florida. Thanks for sharing Shea! —Aunt Bingo

Dear Aunt Bingo,

I was a young teenager when I was at a county fair and noticed this huge tent where people were playing Bingo and winning money! Of course, I wasn’t old enough to play but I was fascinated.

My mother was an avid Bingo player, often playing 4-5 times a week and winning a lot. I couldn’t wait to turn 18 so I could play. My very first time playing Bingo in a “Bingo Hall” I won a large jackpot on I-16. I was hooked. Since then I’ve been playing Bingo regularly and luckily win often.

I not only like winning, I also love the socializing and have made many friends over the years.

—Shea S., Melbourne, FL

In our February 2023 column, “Frustrated in Washington” wrote about getting booted out of bingo for winning too often—the first time I’d heard such a story. Reader Diane E. wrote to weigh in with her thoughts on this issue, her letter follows. We love it when readers get involved! —Aunt Bingo

I feel bad for them and feel that being excluded was a terrible way for it to be handled at that time, as we don’t know if this person was talked to previous times. Like you said, there are too many factors involved to be able to say what was right or wrong in this matter.

This person, knowing they can play that many cards, and suffering this decision, would do best to consider the bingo hall and their customer’s abilities, when purchasing how many cards to play. I am sure this person is a “seasoned” player and knows how bingo halls respond to certain situations. There are people who naturally win quite a bit, and they are resented for it, out of jealousy. There are also people who love to go to bingos just for that reason, to show off and outdo their competitors. I thought bingo was supposed to be for fun, not to outdo one another. Maybe this person is oblivious to the group they are playing in.

I think if it were me, I’d go to a bigger hall and play, or if at a smaller hall, I’d limit myself to the number of cards I’d play. After all, it is being around others and having fun that’s most important. Winning is nice, but to what expense?

I just wonder if this happens often across the nation, or just a one-time situation. I hope you will update us all.

Stand Downs for 2023 are one, two- or three-day events for homeless veterans with varying services offered, depending on the length of the event. A location might have services ranging from medical screenings and dental care, benefits counseling (this can be for Department of Veterans Affairs, Social Security and food stamps) and legal advice, to housing assistance, clean clothing and showers, job search help, haircuts, substance abuse referrals/recovery and much more.

A wide variety of government agencies, individual groups and veteran service organizations are on hand at each event to provide help to homeless veterans who attend. Some of those groups and agencies include Department of Labor, community service providers, VA medical centers and more.

To see the schedule for this year, go to www.va.gov/homeless/ events.asp and either filter by date

or state. More will be added as time goes on, so check back if there’s nothing in your area right now. You can also check the site for the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (nchv.org/current-standdowns) for a list of 2023 Stand Downs.

If you find an event and know you want to participate, contact the people listed for that event. If you’ll likely need transportation, be sure to tell them and then keep in touch.

And if you can volunteer, sign up soon so event organizers will know how much help they’ll have. Can you cook? Can you drive to pick up participants for the event? Are you a barber? Any of those services and more will be welcome.

If you’re part of an organization and want to provide services, contact the nearest VA medical center and ask for the VA Stand Down point of contact. Depending on the services you propose to provide, your group might be eligible for a grant to help with costs.

PICKS OF THE MONTH

Murder Mystery 2 (PG-13)

— Even though the first Murder Mystery doesn’t exactly hook you into the most satisfying whodunnit, it was still an amusing watch nonetheless and prompted Netflix to return with a sequel. Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston reprise their roles as married couple Nick and Audrey Spitz, who are invited to the wedding of Maharajah Vikram — a suspect in the previous murder mystery that took place in the first film. But, at the wedding, the Maharajah gets kidnapped, so the Spitzes, as the most unqualified detectives, naturally see this as a prime opportunity to solve yet another case. (Netflix)

The Estate (R) — Macey (Toni Collette) and Savannah (Anna Farris) are owners of a sinking business. When they receive news from their mother that their wealthy Aunt Hilda has terminal cancer, the desperate sisters hatch a plan to visit Hilda and see if they can squeeze themselves into her will before she passes. Upon their arrival, Macey and Savannah

realize that their two-faced cousin Beatrice (Rosemarie DeWitt) is already staying with Hilda; their other cousin, Richard (David Duchovny), arrives shortly after them. With all the family gathered around for the same reason, who will get to walk away with the money from Hilda’s estate? Kathleen Turner stars as none other than Aunt Hilda in this black comedy out now. (Hulu)

Tetris (R) — Who knew the journey behind bringing the puzzle game Tetris to players across the world would be so tumultuous?

Taron Egerton (Rocketman) stars as businessman Henk Rogers, who attempts to secure the rights of Tetris and get it packaged with the new Game Boy console. Henk must travel from the U.S. to the Soviet Union, during a time when tensions are still high between both countries, to meet with the Russian developer of Tetris. What should have been simple negotiations for a game turns into a dangerous, high-stake battle for all involved. (AppleTV+)

Fool’s Day Foolishness

Kate and I have a long-standing bet regarding April Fool’s Day. Whoever gets the other one first has to tell untruths all 24 hours the next day. It has led to some pretty funny situations, like the year I got Kate and the next day she was trying to sell a house to some hot prospects. She finally got out of it by convincing the buyers to wait a day before before answering their questions. I thought she was pretty ingenious and the next year she got me, and I was stuck with lying to a new boyfriend. He never quite recovered and was soon gone.

One year I was determined to get Kate via the telephone. The next day was our favorite Bingo game and I wanted her to have to fib all evening or be forced to not talk at

all.

I arranged for Connie to phone at 8 a.m., an unseemly hour to begin the day in my opinion. Connie told Kate that the Lotto ticket they had bought together was a winner and would she meet her for breakfast and a celebration. Of course I went along, and we convinced Kate, helping her mentally spend the money. Then she tried to cash in the ticket only to discover it was a complete dud.

“April Fool,” I said, shaking with laughter. “You believed it. I got you. I win the bet this year.”

Kate reluctantly admitted this was true, but in the back of her mind I could see she was planning revenge.

The Bingo game was hopping with intense energy when we got there. Kate had been very quiet all

Kate?” asked Benny. “What’s wrong?”

“I just lost my last five hundred dollars in the stock market,” replied Kate.

“What?” and “Oh, my,” and “How did that happen?” came from all sides. Kate readily saw she had chosen the wrong lie to tell.

“Well, maybe it wasn’t my absolutely last five hundred,” she said, and I stared at her, determined to catch her in a truth.

Then Bobbi came swirling in to show off her new outfit and ask our opinion. “I really like it,” I said. “That lavender does wonderful things for your eyes.”

“How about you, Kate? What do you think?”

“It is perfect to wear to a fire,” said Kate and nobody knew what she meant.

The Bingo game was nightmarish for poor Kate. She lied when someone asked her if she was on. She said she did not want an extra final blackout and then bought one, confusing the worker. She lied about how much she won.

“Come sit at our table,” said Dave. “You like to sit with us, don’t you?”

Kate turned and looked at me pleadingly. “Sure,” I said. “Let’s sit here, Kate.”

“How come you are so quiet,

“Are you coming next week?” asked Benny as we were leaving.

“Ask Reva. She makes all our decisions,” was Kate’s untruthful reply. Then she muttered on the way to the car. “You wait until next year. I’m going to get you so bad and it will feel so good.” But I wasn’t worried. After all, it had to be a lie.

I Am Only Going to Say This One More Time

As many of you know, I feel that Bingo should be played in a bus terminal, not a library. But I realize that some of us do have problems hearing the numbers from time to time. I personally feel that the problem is not the noise level. It’s the fact that TOO many callers MUMBLE.

Now, before you say that I am “anti-caller,” let me remind you of last month’s column in which I said, in part, that bingo callers are among the hardest working people around and they need to be told that, every time we play.

But, when you have to look at the tote board to find out what number just got called, something

is wrong. And, the problem with mumbling callers is much worse in urban areas.

Now, let me be blunt: GOOD HELP IS HARD TO FIND. Bingo callers aren’t paid very much. Few get tips. All put in long days and have to put up with sometimes offthe-wall players, some of whom have had too much to drink.

But, having been a radio newscaster for more than fifty years, I must remind callers of a few things: WHEN YOU ARE A BINGO CALLER, YOU CAN’T SPEAK NORMALLY. YOU HAVE TO ENUNCIATE AND PROJECT. YOU ARE “ON THE AIR.”

And, if you think the caller is calling the numbers too quickly, don’t blame the caller, talk to the

permitted) allow the callers to be more congenial and informal— as long as the game is played correctly.

I have watched it happen during the twenty-two years I have written this column—the slow change in the game from fun to something cut-and-dried and dull and nonexciting.

Darn it! We go to Bingo for five reasons: (1) To get out of the house; (2) To eat interesting foods; (3) To laugh at our friends; (4) To have a little excitement…and; (5) To NOW AND THEN: win!

My dream would be to own a Bingo Hall. BOB’S BINGO, it would be called. It would have simple rules: HAVE FUN. MAKE NOISE.

You can fire me for this, but it’s about time that Bingo halls (in states where it is permitted) allow the callers to be more congenial, including any asides they want to throw in, and even giving nicknames to some of the balls. I repeat: It’s about time that Bingo halls (in states where it is

Bingo Jerk

Dear Guy, I play Bingo with a friend of a friend who is a two-faced jerk. The only reason I even sit with the guy is that my “real” friend brings him along. It seems like the entire time we’re playing this guy makes fun of my friend, makes wise comments about the people sitting around us, complains about the caller, and frankly complains about everything. I have no idea why my friend likes him. A couple of times he tried to go after me, but I made it clear he better back off so now he leaves me alone. But I’m still stuck listening to all his garbage. Any advice?

—Tom, via e-mail

Dear Tom,

The first thing I’d do is ask your “real” friend why he is friends with this guy. My guess is that there is some history there—they grew up together, the guy was there when he needed him, something like that—which created a bond. Once you get your answer you can decide what to do next. If he brings him for no special reason, you can be honest and say he gets on your nerves. But if there is a deeper reason they are friends and you criticize or complain about the guy, it may affect your friendship.

Of course, there is always the obvious “guy” reason—your friend doesn’t really pay that much attention to what the guy says and does and may not realize how annoying he is. In that case, you could bring it to his attention, let him know it bothers you, and see what he has to say. He may be willing to talk to the guy and tell him to lighten up, which may solve the entire problem.

Bottom line is, you do not need to sit there and be aggravated by this person you don’t care for. Change your Bingo schedule, find someone else to play with, and get together with your “real” friend oneon-one to do other things. —Guy

Blackjack Q & A

This month I decided to have some fun and ask you a few questions about blackjack. See if you know the answers to the following questions (answers at end of the article).

(1) The most important card on the table is:

(a) The cut card

(b) Your first card

(c) The third baseman’s draw card

(d) The dealer’s upcard

(2) The dealer’s worst upcard is:

(a) 2

(b) 5

(c) 6

(3) The dealer busts about 2 times out of every 7 hands. True or false?

(4) When the rules specify that the dealer must hit soft 17, they will bust less often. True or false?

(5) The best seat at a blackjack table is third base because you can control whether the dealer will bust. True or false.

(6) On which of these players hands should you take insurance:

(a) 20

(b) 17

(c) Blackjack

(d) Never

(7) Your dealer is sloppy and exposes her hole card. It is illegal to use the information that you just saw to make a playing decision. True or false.

(8) It doesn’t make any difference how the dealer shuffles the cards (manual or automatic shuffler). True or false.

(9) Bringing a strategy card to the table is perfectly legal. True or false.

(10) You will win 50% of the hands when you play blackjack. True or false.

ANSWERS:

(1) Answer: d. Of course, the most important card on the table is the dealer’s upcard. You will be making all of your playing decisions based on the value of the dealer’s upcard and your hand.

(2) Answer: b and c. The 5 and 6 are the dealer’s worse upcards because they have about a 42% chance of busting (more than any other upcard). The 5 has a tiny fraction greater bust rate then the dealer 6 but it’s a close call so mark either answer b or c as correct.

(3) Answer: True. On average the dealer will bust 28% of the time (or 2 out of every 7 hands).

(4) Answer: False. When the dealer has a soft 17 and must hit, they will bust more often than when they must stand. However, when they don’t bust, they will more likely have a final hand that totals more than 17 which is why the house edge against players increases slightly when the rules specify that dealers must hit soft 17 rather than stand.

(5) Answer: False. As far as your odds of winning, it doesn’t make any difference which seat you take at a blackjack table. They are all equal.

(6) Answer: d. You should never take insurance when the dealer has an Ace upcard even when/if you have a blackjack. Insurance is a bad bet unless you are card counting and have some idea as to the ratio of tens to non-tens in the un-played cards

(7) Answer: False. According to gaming officials in Nevada, the responsibility to ensure that the dealer is dealing properly and not exposing their hole card lies with the casino and not the player. If the dealer inadvertently exposes the hole card and that information is available to all players, there is nothing illegal about using that information to play your hand.

(8) Answer: False. A continuous shuffling machine (CSM) will increase the number of hands that the dealer will deal to players per hour, and this will increase the theoretical amount of money a player will lose per hour (by about 20%). With a CSM, the discards are returned back into the shuffler after every round or two (i.e., the discards are not stacked in the discard tray and then reshuffled as they are with a traditional automatic shuffler).

(9) Answer: True. There is nothing wrong with bringing a strategy card to the tables. Some casinos, how ever, prefer for security reasons that you not place the card on the table. Therefore, it is best to simply hold the card in your hand.

(10) Answer: False. On average a player wins about 43% of the time, loses about 48% of the time, and pushes about 9%

Vegas Mini Blackjack Tournaments

The first ongoing blackjack mini tournament seen in more than a decade debuted recently at the Downtown Grand. The weekly blackjack tournament starts at 3 p.m. every Thursday and there’s a $25 entry fee, with 100% of the money collected returned in prizes. Rounds are 10 hands and there’s a $25 rebuy if you don’t advance. It’s another good addition for the ever-improving DG.

New National Monument

President Joe Biden recently set aside more than 500,000 acres in southern Nevada by creating the state’s fourth national monument, Avi Kwa Ame. The 506,814 acres centered on Avi Kwa Ame, which translates from the Yuman language as “Spirit Mountain,” is now one of the nation’s largest tracts of contiguous land designated to protect wildlife habitat and cultural significance.

Keith Urban Extends

Country musician, singer, songwriter, and guitarist Keith Urban, in the middle of a residency at Zappo’s Theater at Planet Hollywood that ends on July 1, has added eight more performances that will take place on November 1, 3, 4, 10, 11, 15, 17, and 18.

Oldest Hotel in Nevada

A post on OnlyInYourState.com featured the Gold Hill Hotel, a hotel so old that Mark Twain used to drink in the bar there—when he was in his mid-20s. The Gold Hill Hotel was built in 1859 near the first mines of the Comstock Lode. Still in operation today, the hotel is, for the most part, a forgotten piece of Nevada history. For example, Samuel Clemons, whose brother Orion was the secretary for Nevada’s first territorial governor James Nye in nearby Carson City, began his journalism career

in Virginia City, just up the hill from Gold Hill, and adopted the pseudonym Mark Twain while writing stories for the Territorial Enterprise newspaper. The whole tale is told in Twain’s excellent book, Roughing It.

David Blaine Can Take Some Pain

As part of the recent opening of his show at Resorts World, illusionist and extreme-stunt performer David Blaine apparently dislocated his shoulder when he landed badly after jumping from the top of a 90foot scaffolding into a foam pit on the stage. Obviously in distress, some crew members tried to help, but when that failed, Blaine asked if there were any doctors in the house. Four MDs rushed onto the stage and after some effort relocated his right arm. Then Blaine got up off the floor and announced, “Wow. That hurt.” This performer lives by the creed “the show must go on” and it did. According to people in the audience, he was still in pain, but also in good humor. He took a slight break a little later, then finished up.

Nugget News

Colorado-based Century Casinos has been approved by the Nevada Gaming Control Board to purchase the Sparks Nugget for $195 million. For that price, Century buys the operations and half the real estate. The other half is being retained by Las Vegas-based Marnell Gaming, which has owned the Nugget since 2016, having bought it for an undisclosed price from the Ascuaga family. Century owns and operates two casinos in Colorado, two in Missouri, one in West Virginia, and four in Poland. The 1,400-room Nugget will become Century’s flagship property, with its nine restaurants, 700-seat showroom, and convenient location (literally) under and around Intestate 80 in downtown Sparks.

Cash Balls & Cows

I need a truck that drives around my neighborhood blasting mariachi music so I can run out with money like for an ice cream truck; but buy margaritas. —Anonymous

The merry month of May has arrived, but I don’t feel particularly merry. I’m writing this in February and so far, where we live, there’s been little snow. Our one big storm came on Christmas Eve, but since then, endless rain and cloudy days. Depressing. Oh well, enough whining, except to relate my latest Vegas bingo experience.

We played at the Plaza and the cash ball was $2,500 plus. Toward the end of the games, I set up right away for that elusive lucky number, O-75; then sat there and sat there while mentally counting my cash. But darn it, that tricky little devil ball never showed. Someone else hollered bingo while I silently mouthed another word that shall not be named in this column. To the staff at Plaza Bingo, I say boo and I blame you for not summoning O-75 from your demon machine and into the monitor. Just kidding. The workers there, especially Eron, are all nice; or sometimes nice, LOL, and it’s not their fault I’m a repeat loser there and everywhere else. Seriously, I love the staff and they always pretend to remember me when I walk in to play my favorite game.

Years ago, May was referred to as the month of three milkings, when cows could be milked up to three times per day. Should I say, holy cow teats! I grew up on a small farm, so I am familiar with the process and always thought twice a day milking was the norm. I also never knew that a cow’s sense of smell is much stronger than ours. They can pick up scents from up to six miles away, but, enough about cows.

Did you know that ancient folklore considered getting married in May to be bad luck. The saying was Marry in May and you’ll rue the day. Well, some of us married in months other than May and still rue the day. My suggestion is to ignore folklore and choose wisely before saying I do to anyone; whatever the month happens to be.

Hurray! Cinco de Mayo is May 5th. Margaritas and bingo are a perfect way to celebrate. Unfortunately, I won’t be in Vegas or I could do both at the same time. We Americans have whole heartedly embraced this date, but it is celebrated much less so in Mexico. There, this holiday is mostly honored in the state of Puebla where in addition to food and drinks, locals put on a military parade with people dressed as French and Mexican soldiers who reenact the battle of Puebla. On May 5th, 1862, around 2,000 Mexican soldiers defeated 6,000 French soldiers during a day long battle. How this event translated into our U.S. custom of drinking and shenanigans every May 5th is beyond me. And speaking of shenanigans, if you’re in Denver, Colorado, on Cinco de Mayo, you can join an estimated 400,000 of your closest friends at the Cinco de Mayo Festival. Until next month, may La Diosa Fortuna (Lady Luck)) blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Ganar a lo grande (Win big). I respond promptly to all emails at nlpvzw6172@gmail.com; unless I don’t want to. LOL.
