This Month’s Sweepstakes Winner Wins on Her First Try

Donna Tyus sent in a entry form for the very first time in January and won on her very first try. Donna retired after 45 years at Froedtert where she was a nurse. She has played bingo for more than 30 years. She plays mostly at St. Bernadette parish but sometimes at the Elks 46. Donna has been shutout of winning at bingo in the new year, but when she checked the Bingo Bugle February edition on the 2nd she saw that she was the $100 sweepstakes winner. She hopes this is the start of a lucky streak. Bingo is relaxing for Donna she likes her friends at bingo and it gets her out of the house. When we met with Donna she was playing bingo with her daughter Michelle. Her daughter lives in the Green Bay area and likes playing bingo with her mom at St.

Above: Donna Tyus (Left) receives her prize check from Margaret Thorn (Right) from St Bernadette Located 8200 West Denver Avenue Milwaukee. They play Bingo every Sunday starting at 5:00 PM. See their ad with all the details on Page 12 of this Bingo Bugle.

Bernadette when she's in town. Michelle went to school at St. Bernadette and has fond memories of her time there. Donna likes playing bingo at St.

Bernadette because they get done around 8 pm and it's close to her home. She says she going to use her winnings on her planned vacation in Africa this spring. Donna is going on a safari and visiting Victoria Falls while in Africa. Her words of wisdom are "You can't win if you don't try". Not everyone wins their first time, but like she says if you don't send it in you for sure won't win.

St. Bernadette plays two sessions of bingo every Sunday Early Birds starts at 5 pm. and the second session starts at 6 pm. St. Bernadette offers $2500 in prizes with a Progressive Game at the end of the night, as well as cash raffle and pull tabs. They offer delicious food, snacks and desserts. St. Bernadette is located at 8200 West Denver Avenue in Milwaukee.

Real Cash, or a Scam?

Dear Aunt Bingo:

When I’m playing games on my phone (shhh) I often see ads for Bingo games where you can win real money, in particular one called Bingo Cash. I thought playing bingo online for cash was illegal, is this a scam, or what? I see tons of online Bingo sites when I search around, including one that Drew Barrymore plays?! Is this the same sort of game as the Bingo Cash app?

—Georgia Games Girl

Dear GGG:

Online Bingo has become hugely popular, which I’m sure you discovered when you began your search. I personally prefer to play real world bingo, so I’m no expert on apps and online games, but I did some research on Bingo Cash and it does technically appear to be legit. It is a free to download app, available on iOS and Samsung, and you can play for free and win real cash. Bingo Cash allows play for free using gems or free bonus cash; but be warned the Bingo Cash points system and booster options make this game tricky to learn

according to some users. If you win cash prizes, you can withdraw the money via PayPal, but there’s a $5 withdrawal minimum, plus a $1 processing fee. What many see as a problem with Bingo Cash are the annoying prompts that pop up telling you to deposit real money in order to play in tournaments with cash prizes. Industry experts do not think this solicitation for cash is legit. Concerns have been raised about the fact that players can lose real money chasing these tournament wins. Bingo Cash has more than 147,000 reviews on the App Store with an overall rating 4.7 out of 5 stars; negative reviews mention the complicated interface and those annoying popup promos. That said, you can, technically win cash.

The game that Drew Barrymore endorses is Bingo Blitz, and anyone can sign up and start playing for free—the site gives you free credits to get you started, and there are various opportunities for players to accrue more credits as they play. The game does NOT have cash prizes. This site is best known for building a sense of community among its players with an emphasis on collaboration, and trading and chatting among players.

While in my opinion no online bingo can come close to replacing real world bingo, if winter weather or some other calamity keeps you from making it to your favorite game, I’d certainly recommend an online site such as Bingo Blitz over the apps like Bingo Cash that promise real money, but make it extremely difficult to win that money, and very tempting to waste it.

New Presumptives Added to the List

In January the Department of Veterans Affairs added several illnesses to its list of presumptives, courtesy of the PACT Act. Done in two batches, the new additions to the list make it easier for veterans to get the care they need without the dragged-out process of proving that where they were stationed was the cause of their current condition. The illnesses are now considered service-connected, which gives veterans free health care for those conditions.

The first batch of conditions included urinary bladder, ureter and related genitourinary cancers. The second batch included acute and chronic leukemias, multiple myelomas, and myelodysplastic syndromes and myelofibrosis.

Locations matter, and these presumptives are covered for veterans who served in Somalia, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the

neutral zone between Iraq and Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, the Gulf of Aden, the Gulf of Oman, the Persian Gulf, the Arabian Sea or the Red Sea on or after Aug. 2, 1990.

After 9/11, the covered locations are for those who served in Afghanistan, Iraq, Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen or Uzbekistan.

K2 veterans, you haven’t been forgotten. In fact, those serving at Karshi-Khanabad have been recipients of a major push by the VA to get you the health benefits you should have. A recent VA news release says that of the 16,000 K2 veterans, 13,000 are enrolled in VA care. Of those, 11,800 have at least one service connected condition, with the average having 14.6 service-connected conditions.

If you’re K2 and even if you aren’t and haven’t signed up for health care, call the VA at 1-800MYVA411 (800-698-2411). Get the benefits you’re supposed to have.

PICKS OF THE MONTH

Nosferatu (R) — Director Robert Eggers first made plans to develop a remake of the 1922 silent film Nosferatu back in 2015, and it took some time for him to get his passion project off the ground. After being teased for so long, the gothic horror finally came to fruition and landed Bill Skarsgard (It), Nicholas Hoult (Juror No. 2), and Lily-Rose Depp (The Idol) as its leads. Skarsgard’s eerie transformation into Count Orlok is his best work yet, with the cast describing the palpable fear of his character while working on set. Willem Dafoe, Aaron TaylorJohnson, and Emma Corrin co-star as other townspeople whose lives are suddenly connected through a chilling experience with the count. Out now to rent. (Amazon Prime Video)

Paradise (TV-MA) — This drama series starring Sterling K. Brown (Atlas) seems so perfect for network television that it’s surprising it was developed for streaming only. Brown plays secret service agent Xavier Collins, the righthand man to President Cal Bradford (James Marsden). A relentless agent who stops at nothing to defend the president, Xavier receives the shock of his

life when, one day, he finds the president lifeless in his quarters. As an investigation commences, the president’s sudden death is shrouded in secrecy and lies by the White House, leaving Xavier to reveal whether foul play is at work.

(Hulu)

Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy (TV-MA) — It was only a matter of time until the documentaries would start following the arrest of rapper/record executive Sean Combs (aka Diddy) for sexual misconduct. Peacock is the first with a documentary out now that details Combs’ childhood, his rise into the music industry, and now the recent sexual abuse allegations. Guest interviews include past bodyguards, childhood friends, accusers, and former employees of Combs’ label Bad Boy Records. The allegations started to be taken seriously after footage was released of Combs assaulting his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura in 2016, but people in the documentary maintain that his criminal behavior began well before Ventura was subjected to it. Caller’s Kid Creates Some Confusion

Bob calls for our local Bingo about once a month. This time he brought his fouryear-old son along and he entertained us throughout the evening. He was fascinated by the balls bouncing in the glassfronted container and the light-up Bingo board. He helped his daddy call and was pleased with himself that he knew the numbers.

He came to our table and made friends.

asked Kate.

“It’s just a line, isn’t it?”

“Sometimes,” said Kate, “and sometimes it is in a different shape. I could help you.”

“Okay,” he said, but as soon as the balls started bouncing, he was off to watch them, giggling with pleasure.

“I think he’s a little young,” I said.

“I don’t know,” said Kate. “Let’s try him out on something simple. How about the Bonanza?”

“Might be okay,” I said. “That will be a simple blackout. He can play one of mine.”

We arranged him at the table with a Bonanza card. This time the bouncing balls did not draw him away as a different machine was used. He was thoroughly caught up in the game and was soon on for B4. “That’s how old I am,” he said. “I bet I get it.”

cheered. “Bingo, Daddy. I’ve got a Bingo.”

He was not eligible for the win, as he had not purchased a buy-in. He was so ecstatic over winning that I could not even consider taking the card back and claiming it as my own. The whole Bingo Hall went into “pause” mode.

The final decision rested with the caller, but the caller was the child’s father. The little boy looked hopeful. Bob just looked confused. “I don’t know what to do,” he said. “What do you think?”

I thought furiously and came up with an idea. “Could we donate the winnings to the Children’s Hospital?” I asked. “That would seem to take care of who wins.”

“That’s a great idea,” said Bob. “The winnings will be donated to Children’s Hospital.”

Kate unobtrusively pulled a ten-dollar bill from her purse. “This is for you,” she said to the expectant child. “For being such a good sport.”

“I can play Bingo,” he said. “I know my numbers.”

“I can play Bingo,” he said. “I know my numbers.”

“Do you know what a Bingo is?”

He bounced on his chair and kept chanting “B4, B4,” quietly as he waited. But then the number came up and he jumped up and

“Oh,” said the little boy. “Does this mean I can come back and play Bingo again?”

“Not in my lifetime,” said Bob. “Not unless your mother comes along.”

The News We Never Want to Report

It is with sadness that we announce the death of our beloved columnist, Dennis Daily, known to us as Bob.

Before we get to his life story,

below, I must mention one thing his obituary did not: his absolutely amazing voice. The first time he ever called our office, I seriously thought I had won a prize on a radio show, only I don’t listen to any radio stations that give away prizes. It was the most smooth, gracious and professional sounding voice I have ever heard. And his manner was as impressive as his voice.

I’d also like to say that after all these decades editing his column, I still get confused about when to say less and when to say fewer and how loud is loud enough for someone to declare bingo, topics he would return to over the years, one thing I don’t have any confusion about is what a charming, intelligent and wonderful man he was.

He had recently expressed his desire to go on the Bingo Bugle cruise, so I pray that he is soaring now above calm and sparkling

seas, free from all pain, as he makes his way to that Great Bingo Game in the Sky.

—Tara Snowden, Editor, Bingo Bugle

Dennis Michael Daily ‘Dennis was born in Washington, Indiana, March 9, 1947, the son of Joseph M. and Eileen (Baker) Daily. His parents proceeded him in death.

A 1965 graduate of Washington Catholic High School, Dennis began his radio career at WAMW/ WFML as a teenager. He graduated from Vincennes University and attended Indiana University before moving to Washington, DC.

A born communicator, Dennis worked for Mutual Broadcasting for several years and was the original producer of the Larry King radio show. Dennis also served as the press secretary for 8th District

Congressman Joel Deckard before accepting a position with United Press International (UPI) where he worked as the National Managing Editor and, later, West Coast Bureau Chief in Los Angeles.

Although he lived in other areas of the country, Dennis never forgot his hometown roots. He came back to Washington to anchor local coverage of Christmas Eve services at four local churches for WAMW for more than 25 years.

Dennis loved traveling and playing bingo. He was also a history buff and was writing a book about the D-Day invasion before he passed.

Those who mourn Dennis’ passing include his sister, Diane, and many friends and colleagues throughout the country.

Getting Cold Feet, Literally

Hi Guy,

My Bingo hall does a pretty good job of keeping the rooms warm during the winter months, but I still have trouble keeping my feet warm against the cement floor. I used to fight this by sitting closer to the hotair blowers—which helped some but the rest of me got too warm and the blowers are kind of loud for hearing the caller. Extra socks and insulated boots have been good, too, but I was wondering if you had any other ideas.

J.G., Chicago, Illinois

Hi J.G.,

It sounds to me like you’ve done a pretty good job of taking care of business on your own. However, I do have a couple more ideas for you to try.

The first is hand-warmers. Hunters use these palm-sized packs when they’re outdoors for long periods of time. Well, let me tell you, slipping one of those packs into your shoes or boots does wonders for keeping your feet warm.

Something else that should help is to move during breaks. Stand or walk around the hall to get the heart pumping a bit more and get the circulation going.

Finally, you can try and elevate your feet so they aren’t in direct contact with the cement floor. Hook your heels to your chair’s leg-crossbar, rest your feet on an empty chair across from you or carry a durable Bingo bag that you can use to elevate your feet off the floor.

I hope some of these tricks help you out. —Guy

* Toothpaste works well as a silver polish. Wet your silver, plop a little non-gel toothpaste on it and rub gently with a damp, clean rag. Rinse well with a separate rag, and buff dry. Then just step back and let it shine.

Your 7 Upcard Playbook

When a dealer shows a 7 upcard, they have about a 26% chance of busting and about a 74% chance of getting to a final hand that totals 17 through 21 (rule dependent). Because of the latter, we have to be more aggressive when we are dealt a stiff hand (hit rather than stand) and less aggressive when we are dealt a two-card soft hand (hit rather than double down).

What follows is the accurate blackjack playing strategy for any hand in which the dealer shows a 7 upcard.

Fortunately for blackjack players, the playing strategy against a casino dealer’s 7 up card is nearly the same for any number of decks of cards or mix of playing rules. There is one exception and you’ll find it below.

Notations used in this article:

S17 = Dealer must stand on soft 17

H17 = Dealer must hit soft 17

DAS = Doubling down after pair splitting is allowed

NDAS = Doubling down after pair splitting is not allowed

H = Hit

S = Stand

P = Split

Dh = Double down if allowed, otherwise hit Multi-Deck Game

Regardless of the playing rules, use the following strategy when facing a dealer’s seven upcard. Double down if allowed, otherwise hit if holding:

• Hard 10 and 11

• Pair of 5s

Split if holding:

• Pair of As, 2s, 3s, and 7s and 8s

Hit if holding:

• Hard 5 through 9

• Hard 12 through 16

• A-2 through A-6

• Pair of 4s and 6s

Stand if holding:

• Hard 17 through 20

• A-7 through A-9

• Pair of 9s and 10s.

What about a double-deck game?

The playing strategy for a doubledeck game is identical to the above multiple-deck game except for one change:

• If the rules specify DAS, split a pair of 6s (instead of hitting) against a dealer’s 7 upcard. What if you are playing a single-deck game?

You should implement the same strategy change for a single-deck game as you would in a doubledeck game, namely:

Lenny Kravitz Returns

Lenny Kravitz, who refuses to age (though he’s turning 61 this year), did a five-show sold-out residency last fall at Dolby Live at Park MGM and will do five more this August. Kravitz’s music is a fusion that ranges from hard rock to funk, reggae, soul, and R&B. He made history by winning the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance four years in a row (1999-2002), setting the record for most consecutive wins in one category by a male performer; he’s also won many other awards over the years and has sold more than 40 million albums in his 36-year career. The new dates are August 1, 2, 6, 8, and 9.

VooDoo Lounge Returns

VooDoo Steak, which occupies the 51st and 52nd floors of the Rio, has been open for some time, though VooDoo Lounge, the associated ultra lounge, “permanently” closed during the pandemic. Well, apparently, permanently meant five years or so, because VooDoo Lounge reopened in January. According to the Rio’s website, “The wait is over—VooDoo Lounge has returned. Perched high above the city, this ultra lounge is your gateway to unforgettable evenings. From bold cocktails to panoramic views and a live DJ setting the

vibe, every moment invites you to play, explore, and savor the good life.” There’s no cover, but “upscale attire” is required and beers are $9-$10, cocktails $17, bottle service $200-$850, and VIP seating packages $250-$1,500.

Country Comes to Sphere

Kenny Chesney has announced a 12-date residency at Sphere, the first country act to appear in the dome. He’s sold 30 million units over the course of his 30-year career, spawning 27 singles that have made it to the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100, and headlined 18 arena tours. He’s been awarded 12 Country Music Association awards, including Entertainer of the Year four times, 11 Academy of Country Music awards, including Entertainer of the Year (2005 to 2008), and has been nominated for six Grammy awards. The shows will be on: May 22, 24, 25, 28, 30, and 31 and June 4, 6, 7, 11, 13, and 14.

BLVD Construction Completed BLVD, the massive 4-story 400,000-square-foot retail, dining, and entertainment project, has completed construction. Across from Aria (with a great view of it from the second-floor patio at Whataburger), BLVD opened to the public during F1, when the the two-story Puma store unlocked its doors. The rest of the announced retailers were slated to open in early 2025. Initial retailers include Lululemon, Abercrombie & Fitch, British sportswear retailer JD Sports, Danish jeweler Pandora, mini department store H&M, and Adidas. In N Out has announced a major outlet, but that isn’t opening for another year or so.

March Laptop

Misery

Computers and humans have a lot in common. They start with abundant memory and drive but become outdated as they age. Then, they start crashing unexpectedly and need replacement parts to stave off the black screen of death.

Ms. Know-It-All

All right, dear readers, as I write this column for the second time in a week, I am very angry with myself. I was told and did not listen until disaster struck and turned my laptop screen black. Oh yes, the black screen of death appeared with two small messages: can’t find hard drive and no memory. Eek! I immediately did what most of you do, panicked, then restarted my laptop repeatedly to no avail; followed by cursing and crying. My laptop had years of Bingo Bugle columns on it as well as other documents I had saved for future reference. All are gone, not to mention photos and other memorabilia that I cherished. I had been warned to do back-up, but I never got around to it. Hurriedly, I called my tech guru to tell him I was bringing him my sickie laptop and I shared with him its screen messages. He asked, did you back up your stuff? I replied, no. He sighed and explained that probably my laptop was beyond resuscitation, but he would take a look. He called the next day to confirm the bad news; that I

should say goodbye to years of documents, photos, and every other thing stored on her.

My procrastination has cost me dearly, so, dear readers, if you value what’s on your tech devices, don’t delay as I did. Back everything up one way or another so you don’t have to throw a funeral for your dearly departed laptop; while trying to kick your own dumb ass for not doing so earlier. I am getting a new laptop which will auto back-up all my info to the cloud. I’m so old though that I probably won’t have much to back-up this time around. Btw, I’m using my husband’s old desktop computer to finish this column and praying it also doesn’t crash.

St. Pat’s Day is March 17, so wear orange if you’re Protestant as Catholics traditionally wear the green. Either way, this is the day we eat Irish stew or corned beef and cabbage—and look for leprechauns so we can steal their pots of gold.

To summon good luck for bingo or otherwise, here are some suggestions. Cut your hair, but only in the moonlight. Once done, do not give a hair lock to your romantic partner unless you wish her/him bad luck. Next, watch out for black cats who wander into your path. If that happens, make a triangle with your fingers and spit through it. Third, good luck will come to those who put cinnamon sticks close to the money in their wallet/purse. And last, upon getting home after St Pat’s partying, tie a telephone wire around your shoes. Now, since we have become a cell phone world, I don’t know how this will work, but you might try putting your cell phone inside your shoe. If the phone smells bad the next day, hold it away from your face, and turn up the volume. Let me know if any of this works by contacting me at nlpvzw6172@gmail.com. Until next month, may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Win big.
