George P. George December 31, 1934 - May 1, 2025

Born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, George was the beloved son of Barket and Nellie (née Decker) George. A proud graduate of GAR High School, he went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.

On May 11, 1957, George married the love of his life, Phyllis. They began their life together and started their family in Arcadia, Wisconsin, where George was the owner and operator of the City Café. In 1960, they moved to St. Francis, and built a life centered on love, faith, and family. They were just days away from celebrating their 68th wedding anniversary.

A devoted husband, father, and pillar of the St. Francis community, George leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication, and compassion. In 1968, he created countless cherished memories and lifelong friendships as the proud owner of Club Bagdad in Cudahy, WI. Known for his warm hospitality and spirited gatherings, the tavern became a local favorite under his care.

George went on to serve his community for over 30 years as an independent insurance agent with Mutual Service Insurance. Through his integrity, hard work, and genuine concern for others, he earned the trust and admiration

of both clients and colleagues.

Even in retirement, George's zest for life and sense of community never waned. He brought people together through his organized "George P. George Tours" to various Midwest casinos, where camaraderie and laughter were always guaranteed. George was deeply involved in civic life and was widely respected for his unwavering commitment to community service. He was a founding member of the St. Francis Lions Club and played a key role in the building of the St. Francis Community Center. His long-term involvement as a St. Francis Lion member kept him active in catering for weddings and events, working weekly bingo nights, and volunteering for vari-

ous outings and festivities. He also served actively in numerous organizations including the Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus, and the Association of Commerce. As a former elected Alderman, George worked tirelessly with government officials to improve the city of St. Francis. In recognition of his outstanding civic contributions, George was named the St. Francis Association of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1997. His passion for mentorship and youth development was evident in his longtime leadership as chief executive director of the Miss St. Francis Scholarship Pageant and as a state field director for the Miss Wisconsin Pageant. His guidance impacted the lives of many young women over the years.

George's love for his

community, his dedication to service, and the warmth he shared with all who know him will never be forgotten.

George is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 68 years, Phyllis (née Puchalla); his loving children Michael (Dawn) George, Judy (Steve) Pfister, Carol Hanney, and Tony George; his brother Phillip (Barbara) George; his cherished grandchildren Melissa (Matthew) LaBarre, Ashley (Nick) Timber, Ryan (Gabby) Pfister, Crystal Knuth, Kayla Knuth, Austin George, Haley George, and Hannah George; and his great-grandchildren Ava LaBarre and Beau Pfister. He will also be fondly remembered by extended family, friends, and countless community members whose lives he touched. George is preceded in death by his parents, Barket and Nellie George; his beloved daughter, Mary Ellen Knuth; son-in-law, Kenneth Hanney; sisters, Marian (Joseph) Sweeney and Bernie (Joseph) Schultz; brothers, Leo (Lillian) and Joseph (Patricia) George; and his best friend, Otis "Bill" Weinhold.

A Memorial Visitation was held on Wednesday, May 14, 2025. The family encourages memorial contributions to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or any veterans' organization of your choice.

From Aunt B’s Archives

Dear Aunt Bingo, I’m hoping you might publish my poem. I’m sure my fellow players can relate.

An Ode to Bingo

Here I sit at Bingo again, Wishing that I’m going to win.

Don’t leave me hanging with one away, Here’s hoping it’s my lucky day.

As the numbers tumble about, Let the one I need just come out.

Although it’s just an old cliché, If not me, let it be you today.

The Bingo games they come and go.

And if I win, I’ll tell you so.

All in all, I must admit, It’s not the win, but the friends I get.

—Carol Wellhoff, Saint Paul, Minnesota

Dear Carol, I am so happy to have received your poem and equally happy to share it with fellow players. —Aunt Bingo

Dear Aunt Bingo,

I had to write in after reading so many issues of “Dear Aunt Bingo” with my aging grandfather. My grandfather used to be a poker player but in his old age he stopped going to casinos to play. He sat around the house for about two years playing online poker, and I would go and visit, watch him play, and we would talk.

Then the government cracked down on online poker, and my grandfather lost his will to get out of the house or even bed. This went on for a few months, and every time I came to visit him, I would bring him a Bingo Bugle to read. He would read your column each week, but thought Bingo was a stupid low-limit game, until he saw an advertisement for a huge local jumbo jackpot game, and for the first time in months he called me and asked me to pick him up and head to the casino. He was instantly hooked. The possibility of a large progressive payout lifted his spirits! It’s not like he plays to win, he just loves to play to get in the action—to sit next to me, share some old stories over a beer, and to ask some of the ladies that can still drive for their Facebook information! He is back, baby! My grandfather and I now attend various Bingo sessions around Las Vegas at least three times a week, and he has started to date one of the Bingo callers at a local establishment!

So, thank you, Aunt Bingo. Your column has connected some elderly lovebirds and made one grandson happy as a clam! —J. G., Tempe, Arizona

QL means Quality of Life

Injured or disabled veterans have a friend in QL Plus, or more specifically, the engineering students and their mentors who create the QL Plus projects for veterans.

The purpose of QL Plus is to create the gear and adaptive devices that will make injured veterans more independent and mobile. The students come from 25 colleges and engineering schools across the country, and they work with mentors and experts to create the personalized devices that injured veterans need.

Some of the projects are ingenious — wheelchair tire cleaners for a veteran’s garage, kayak and bike lifts and hiking prosthetics are just a few of the devices created by the students. Then there was the weightlifting hook so a veteran could complete his workout routine, and the onehanded bobsled for the U.S. Para Bobsled team. One veteran was

able to play his guitar again after losing his arm when the QL Plus team created an adaptive guitar pick that attaches to his prosthetic arm.

And check YouTube for some of the group’s previous projects (www. youtube.com/@qlplusprogram) as well as Instagram (www.instagram. com/ql.plus).

Veterans with a disability (not necessarily service-related) are encouraged to apply to have devices made for them at no cost whatsoever. Each project takes a full year, with design of the device done in the fall semester and the actual building of it in the spring, with completion in May.

If there is a device you need to make your life easier, QL Plus wants to hear from you (www. qlplus.org). Click on “Request A Project.” They’re now taking applications for the 2025-2026 academic year.

If you don’t need a device but you’d like to donate to QL Plus (it’s a nonprofit rated three stars by Charity Navigator), you can mail a check to 1544 Spring Hill Road #9927, McLean, VA 22102.

PICKS OF THE MONTH

Y2K (R) — In his directorial debut, Kyle Mooney (Saturday Night Live) brings back 2000s-style comedy in full force. This film deemed an “apocalyptic sci-fi comedy horror” follows a group of high school students in 1999 who crash a New Year’s Eve party. Expecting a night full of the usual teenage angst and antics, these kids receive the shock of their lives when the power goes out at midnight and technological chaos ensues! As pieces of technology from VCRs to Tamagotchis to microwaves begin to murder the partygoers, our group of unsuspecting high schoolers must fight to make it through the night. Jaeden Martell (Mr. Harrigan’s Phone), Rachel Zegler (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes), and even The Kid LAROI co-star in Y2K. (Max) Pulse (TV-MA) — Fans of Grey’s Anatomy and medical dramas, look no further than this new series. Taking place in a trauma center in Miami-Dade County, the show centers around Danny Simms, a third-year resident in emergency medicine. When her personal relationship with the chief resident

gets him suspended, Danny receives a promotion so that she can prove herself. With a hurricane on its way to Miami and new responsibilities on her shoulders, Danny faces the biggest challenge of her entire career. Luckily, she has the help of a great staff, played by Colin Woodell (The Flight Attendant), Justina Machado (The Horror of Dolores Roach), and Jessie T. Usher (Smile). (Netflix) The Bondsman (TV-MA) — Kevin Bacon has been enjoying thrilling roles as of late, and his latest role as the titular character in this eight-episode miniseries continues to add to his repertoire in the horror genre. The Bondsman stars Bacon as Fred Herbert, a bounty hunter whose last mission didn’t go too well and resulted in a gruesome death. However, Fred eventually wakes up and realizes that he’s been resurrected... with just a small catch. Lucifer only let Fred escape from hell on the condition that he continues his bounty-hunting job — but this time, he’ll be catching demons. (Amazon Prime Video)

The Bride Went to Bingo

Our cousin Connie finally decided to marry her longtime companion, Kevin. She invited us to participate in the festivities and to make everything super fun, invited twelve of us to play Bingo the night before the wedding. We went to a casino where Connie had made arrangements for a special table. The casino management put little wedding bells on the table, making us all feel very well taken care of indeed.

We were a raucous, happy group and I got a chance to ask Connie what had made her finally decide to marry the man. “Financial reasons chiefly,” was her reply, “but also because he decided to take his health more seriously, and started running again, which took off the forty pounds he’d been complaining about for years.”

“He does look great,” I said.

“The running has been so good for him and he looks so fit, especially in his wedding tuxedo. I am really proud of him.”

Connie looked fondly at her intended and then we were into our Bingo games.

We turned out to be a very lucky table. Kate won the third game which was a double X and pretty difficult, but she handles those difficult games with ease and announced the winnings would go to the bride and groom as a wedding gift. The next winner at our table followed suit and a sizeable fund soon built up.

Connie was embarrassed as she said she hadn’t planned the evening to be a moneymaker for her. At intermission, she treated everyone to drinks and snacks.

We played happily on and then came the big surprise of the evening. The caller announced the next game would be the “wedding cake” in honor of our bride and groom. It was a special treat and consisted of the top N, the second I, N, and G, the third B, I, N, G, and O and the bottom two Ns. That made a pretty strange looking wedding cake—but was fun and difficult. I noticed Kate making tiny dots in all the needed squares and thought that was a really good idea. Most of the others at our table spent all their time figuring out if the called number was needed.

Kevin was lucky with this game and before long was on, although he said he wasn’t sure if he was on or not. Then he won and we all

cheered like fools. He rose and bowed to us all and said, “This is my lucky time. I win a big jackpot and a lovely bride all in one fell swoop.”

We laughed and cheered and ended the evening on a very happy note.

The next day was beautiful and bright and a perfect day for a wedding. We went early to the church to be ready to help wherever needed, but Connie was well organized and had everything in hand. So, we reminisced about our childhood when we were all close and played together.

“I remember those games of ‘run sheep run,’” said Connie fondly. “I could never keep up with the rest of you, but I made a good try.”

“Now it’s time to get you married,” I said, ushering them all toward the door.

I went first as her attendant, then Kate, who walked her down the aisle to the traditional music. She looked lovely in beige lace with beige lace pumps and her bouquet trailed nearly to the floor.

She reached Kevin at the altar and the minister read the regular service. They had written their own vows and they were lovely and sweet and made me want to cry for all the years they have been together.

At last the minister said, “I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss your bride.”

Kevin leaned in to kiss her and someone from the other side of the room shouted, “Bingo!”

Cops Caught Playing Crime Bingo

When someone is pulled over by law enforcement or engaged somehow by officers, the experience often comes with a surge of adrenaline, even fear, as worry about criminal charges or a mention in the newspaper sets in. Now there’s a new concern: Am I being targeted in some sort of inside game the officers are playing? That’s what happened in Bozeman, Montana recently where “Crime Bingo” had officers trying to mark off spots on their cards with things like “ARREST 3 PEOPLE OUT OF ONE CAR,” and simply “BUTT-ASS NAKED,” which was left open to interpretation by players. Thirteen officers, including two sergeants, marked off squares

apparently generated by one of several online services catering to the current customized bingo craze, according to the Bozeman Police Department. The secret game came to light and Bozeman Police Chief Jim Veltkamp held a press conference to reveal details about the game, and insisted the rights of those stopped by BPD were not violated as part of the game and added that the game went on for 12 days until someone alerted command staff, who shut down the game. BPD offered no details about whether money was involved, who specifically originated the game or how individual officers were disciplined. The Gallatin County Attorney’s Office, the Bozeman City Attorney’s Office and the BPD each reportedly conducted internal investigations.

Bubbles & Bingo Raises Big Bucks

Thanks to the incredible generosity of businesses and individuals from the four counties it serves, Hospice of the Chesapeake’s new fundraiser, Bubbles and Bingo, raised $360,000 to support the patients and families who turn to them during life’s most challenging moments. The blacktie affair was held in March at the Atreeum at Soaring Timbers in Annapolis, Maryland, and included gourmet fare and bubbly. After a standing ovation to honor and thank these professionals, guests rallied to raise their paddles to offer donations. Then the bingo games began, with five guests walking away with prize packages ranging in value from $2,500 to $8,500. As Maryland’s largest independent not-for-profit hospice, the philanthropy of businesses, organizations and individuals means people are never turned away from care, regardless of their inability to pay.

Valerie Bertinelli Hosts Bingo Golden Globe-winning actress, Emmy-winning cooking show host and now a game show host? Valerie Bertinelli (One Day at a Time, Hot in Cleveland) is the host of Game Show Network’s new show, Bingo Blitz. “If you like bingo—and who doesn’t—and if you like trivia–who doesn’t—you’re gonna love this game,” Bertinelli said. In Bingo Blitz, two contestants answer trivia questions to earn bingo balls and points. In addition to numbered bingo balls, players also receive gold balls they can strategically place on their cards to increase their chances of making a bingo. After three rounds, the player with the highest score advances to the fast-action Blitz round, where making a bingo in 60 seconds or less wins them $10,000. The game itself–Bingo Blitz–has been around for more than a decade on Facebook and as a downloadable app on smartphones. Bingo Blitz airs weeknights at 7:30 p.m. ET on Game Show Network.

There may be no such thing but I’m off to find it.

The best of times, the worst of times. The less said, the better. Eye on the prize.

Nose to the grindstone. Pedal to the metal.

Bingo Abroad

Hi Guy,

You asked people to write in who have played Bingo in other countries. My husband and I played Bingo at two Bingo palaces on the outskirts of London, England. It was tremendous fun! At certain times I almost forgot that I wasn’t back home playing in the USA. It did get tricky with some of the accents and the players were a bit chattier during the games than at home. But we just chalked it up to part of the international experience and just went with it! —Lil O., Massachusetts

Hi Guy, Last summer my wife and I took a group tour to England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. We discovered several other people in the tour group who were Bingo fans like us. During the England portion of the visit six of us skipped a theater evening and instead went to a big Bingo hall for a few hours of Bingo. We didn’t win any money but definitely had a blast! —RJ, New York

Dear Lil and RJ,

Thanks for taking the time to write in. I have never played Bingo outside of North America and look forward to giving it a try. I’ll bet many folks never even think to seek out Bingo halls during their international travels. Here’s hoping your positive experiences will encourage them to do so. It has definitely encouraged me! —Guy

Dealer Questions

I receive many questions from blackjack players; some involve interactions with blackjack dealers. Here are a few that you might find interesting and educational. Should you tip a blackjack dealer, and if so, how much?

There isn’t any rule that says you must tip a blackjack dealer, just like there are no rules that say you must tip a waiter or taxi driver. However, let’s be realistic, we all know that many hard-working folks who work in the service industry have a low base salary and that they depend upon tips from customers to make ends meet. When I go to a restaurant, whether I tip my server and how much depends upon the service I get. It should be the same for blackjack dealers.

Unfortunately, I’ve run into some surly blackjack dealers over my 40year playing career. You know the type…gruff, disagreeable, irritable, grumpy, unhelpful, never smiling, and making you feel uncomfortable when you play. My tip for them is nada. I have even been known to tell them specifically what they are doing wrong and to correct it. If a dealer is extremely obnoxious (I’ve actually had one call me an asshole for not leaving a tip), then I will seek out the pit boss and tell them about the discourteous dealer. On the other hand, if a dealer has been friendly, courteous, and helpful, I will leave a tip. How much? Because I play with an advantage, I know how much my theoretical hourly profit is and I usually tip no more than 25% of this. (I also wait until the count is in my favor before making a bet for the dealer.) If you are a basic strategy player and you want to tip a friendly dealer, my recommendation is to tip a few dollars if you are a $5 or $10 bettor, and tip $5 if you are a $25 bettor. (See next question.)

Does it make a difference how you tip the dealer? I’m asking because sometimes I see players make a tip for the dealer on their hand while others just leave some chips for the dealer after they are done playing. I think it’s important that you let the dealer know early in your session that if they are friendly and helpful that you will be tipping them. Therefore, if they’re friendly from the get-go, I’d make a bet for them on your hand (now they know that if they continue the behavior you expect, they will probably be rewarded with more tips).

However, I don’t recommend that you place the chip(s) you want to bet for the dealer on the outside of your betting spot (most players do this). Instead, you should place the chip(s) you want to bet for the dealer on top of your chips and inside the betting circle. The reason is if you place the chip(s) outside of the betting circle, you have no control over them. If the hand wins, the dealer will keep the chip(s) you bet for her plus the corresponding winning chips. If you place the chip(s) on top of your chips inside the betting circle, you still own them, meaning the dealer only gets to keep the winning chip(s) or whatever you choose to give to them. Usually, I let the chip(s) that I bet for the dealer ride on the next hand. If I win a few hands in a row, it gives the perception that I’m a big tipper. In addition, by placing the chip(s) you bet for the dealer on top of your wagered chip(s), the additional amount will count toward your rating.

“The dealer made a dealing mistake, which caused me to lose. Their supervisor wouldn’t correct the mistake. I felt cheated and I’ll never play at that casino again.”

Normally, if a dealer makes an error in dealing the cards or in a payoff, they are supposed to bring it to the attention of their supervisor. The floor supervisor has the responsibility to correct the mistake. In most cases, the supervisor will give the benefit to the players because they want to maintain them as customers. However, if you believe that the supervisor hasn’t corrected the mistake to your satisfaction, you should tell the supervisor that you would like to speak to the pit (or shift) boss. I would plead your case at this level, including asking the pit or shift supervisors to review the tapes of the table so they can see the mistake made by the dealer.

South

Point Catering to Seniors

In a rare move in today’s Las Vegas, South Point recently introduced “50+ Prime Time Mondays,” a promotion geared at those 50 years and older. Every Monday, seniors get half-point dining (other than at Baja Miguel’s and Primarily Prime Rib, both closed on Mondays) and half-point bingo. In addition, on Wednesdays and Thursdays, South Point’s Century 16 movie theater is charging only $4 admission for 50 and up (with Free Club card). Senior promotions used to be common, but they went the way of cathode-ray tubes.

New Movies Announced for Sphere Rumors have been floating around for a while about a new version of The Wizard of Oz being produced for the giant screen at Sphere and now it’s official. Sphere Entertainment has announced that it will “launch a fully immersive version of the 1939 film that will maintain the integrity of the original, while pushing the boundaries of Sphere’s experiential medium.” In addition, Sphere Studios is developing a new documentary, From the Edge, which will focus on five extreme athletes: surfer, rock climber, BASE jumper, skier, and free diver. From the Edge will debut next year and The Wizard of Oz will premiere in August.

FBleau Collins Bar in Top 10 FoodandWine.com has issued a list of the Top 10 Hotel Bars in the U.S., selected by its “panel of drink experts, who’ve spent plenty of time at the best hotel bars in the country.” Fontainebleau’s Collins bar, just off the lobby with live piano most nights, was ranked number six. It was the only hotel bar in Las Vegas to make the list. New York had two bars of the 10, including the number-one best, the King Cole Bar at the St. Regis Hotel,

with one each in Dallas, Nashville, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., New Orleans, Detroit, and Chicago.

Lionel Richie Adds Dates

Lionel Richie, one of the Encore Theater’s longest-running and most successful headliners, has added six dates in October to his “Lionel Richie: King of Hearts” residency schedule: October 15, 17, 18, 22, 24, and 25. Richie, who has racked up more than 125 million album sales, an Academy Award for Best Original Song (“Say You, Say Me”), four Grammys, and a Golden Globe, has also performed more than 50 sold-out concerts since launching his residency at Encore in 2019.

Rare Flush in Vegas

This April a lucky Club Serrano member from Garland, Texas— visiting Palms Casino Resort Las Vegas for the very first time—hit an incredibly rare Face Up Pai Gow Poker hand: a seven-card, jack-high straight flush in hearts. The stunning hand triggered the progressive jackpot, awarding more than $897,000 to the guest.

The Empire Strips Back

The Rio has announced a new show, The Empire Strips Back. The “one-of-a-kind evening full of comedy, allure, and sci-fi in the world of burlesque is taking the galaxy by storm.” This is a parody production based, of course, on the Star Wars franchise and has been around for a while, having opened in Australia in 2011. Here’s part of a review from SFGate in 2022. “If you’ve ever wanted to watch sexy stormtroopers stomp to the relentless 4/4 rhythm of ‘Seven Nation Army,’ then The Empire Strips Back — a Star Wars parody and traveling burlesque show — is absolutely for you.” It starts May 5 and tickets are extremely reasonable at $39-$59.

Not Me, Blame Them!

Watch out if someone smiles after things have gone wrong. That person has undoubtedly thought of someone else to take the blame.

–Ms. Know-It-All

First things first, so happy Father’s Day, Sunday, June 15th, to all our fathers, stepfathers, foster fathers, grandfathers and anyone who takes on the role of a father. For those like me who have lost their fathers, our hearts grieve as others celebrate with their loved ones. So, if you can spend the day with yours, cherish that time. Go out to dinner, then go play bingo, or teach your loved one to play. It’s time well spent.

If you’re in Laughlin, Nevada, try the bingos there. I have and like them all. They are at Riverside, Edgewater, and Tropicana casinos. Last time I was there, I played at Edgewater, the newest of the three halls. The chairs are low to the floor, but there are cushions available free of charge. I’m short and the added boost is just right for me to comfortably play. Robert and I put our games on computers; no daubing papers. That leaves me free to gobble chips and slurp a beverage while waiting for my computer to flash BINGO! It’s weeks later and I’m still waiting, but my friend playing with us that day bingoed twice. I don’t remember the last time I won at bingo, but then, some days I’m lucky if I can figure out what day it

is and be able find the bathroom. The staff at Edgewater bingo is fantastic, friendly, and helpful. Thank you, Kelly, Brandi, Susan, Nicole, Judy, and all the others that I don’t have room to mention. They didn’t promise me I’d win some moolah, but hey, they didn’t promise me a rose garden either. LOL.

Laughlin is opposite Bullhead City with the Colorado River between the two. Don Laughlin bought six acres and a deserted motel in the desert south of Las Vegas for $235,000 in 1964. With a $35,000 down payment, his modest investment grew into the million-dollar Riverside Casino and made Mr. Laughlin a very rich man. He died in 2023 but his legacy lives on. In 1987 he personally paid for construction of the first bridge connecting Laughlin and Bullhead at a cost of $3.5 million. In contrast, a brand-new bridge was built about eight miles away at the other end of Laughlin, opening in 2024, at a cost of $60 million to the federal and local governments. Including Riverside, there are now eight casinos along the river, all with great views, and great bingo.

One of my favorite holidays occurs this month on Friday, June 13th. It’s Blame Someone Else day, allowing me an entire 24-hours’ worth of not accepting blame for any and all of my foibles. My husband would say I do that anyway, not just on June 13th. Now I ask you, why would I confess to multiple sins when I can blame him?

Example: Nan, our pizza is burnt, you didn’t get it out of the oven. Me: You didn’t tell me to start the timer. Or, Nan, hand me our passports to get into Canada. Me: You didn’t tell me to pack them. That last one necessitated our turning around after a four-hour drive and heading home. He was not a happy camper. Until next month, may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Win big. Contact: nlpvzw6172@gmail.com.
