I hope you were able to spend quality time celebrating with loved ones over the festive season. I also hope you took some tips from one of our previous articles on creating vision boards for your 2019 goals and that you are prepared to challenge yourself in all aspects of your life this year...one step at a time.

If there was much merriment and the clothing is starting to feel a tad bit snug, why not turn to our Regular Activities which holds a comprehensive list of both indoor and activities to help get those Endorphins going.

This month, Morag Flight provides us with some tips on how to prepare your garden this January season with some colourful flowers to plant such as Iceland Poppy, Marigold and Bougainvilleas.

Why not join the BirdLife Zimbabwe group and enjoy some time outdoors searching for some of the beautiful birds our country has to offer. For some inspiration, read about the Kanyenganyenga Stars’ recent birding visit to Hippo Pools and the wide array of fine feathered creatures they were able to record.

Africa’s Super Fruit The Baobab

Baobab fruit powder is great as an energy source, aids digestion, enhancement of the immune system, everyday hydration and for skin health. It can be consumed by adding a few tablespoons of the powder to water, milk, smoothies, cereals or porridges, stews and yoghurts.

From the seeds of the Baobab fruit, a rich, golden yellow oil is cold pressed. The oil is rich in Omega 3, 6 and 9 Fatty Acids. The latter make the oil an excellent moisturiser which is absorbed quickly into the skin, without clogging pores. The oil is also beneficial for skin conditions such as Eczema, sunburn and sun spots and it prevents premature ageing and reduces the visibility of stretch marks. The oil can also be used as a hair conditioner.

Pervaded with charm, superstition and legends wherever it grows, the Baobab Tree is the largest succulent tree in the world. They grow in hot, dry and poor parts of Zimbabwe. It serves as a source of water, food, medicine as well as shelter.

It grows to a height between 20-25 metres, and has a girth of up to 28 metres lasting up to 3000 years. The massive trunk gives rise to tapering branches resembling a root system, which gives rise to its other name, Upside-down tree. The folk tale says the gods were angry with the tree, and in their anger, they planted it upside down to silence it. The trunk of the tree is smooth and shiny while the leaves are hand size and are divided into five to seven finger-like leaflets.

The fruit grows up to one foot, and is increasingly becoming popular as a superfood. This fruit is rich in Fibre, Vitamins and Minerals (particularly Vitamin C, January 2019 - Issue 107

TREE SOCIETY, We will be visiting a very favourite spot at the Botanic Gardens Extension at Christon Bank which is situated about 30 km north of Harare. It is an area of rocky hillsides and Brachystegia boehmii dominated woodland near the Mazowe River.

Several properties were donated to the National Botanical Gardens in the seventies and have been maintained and protected under the name Mazowe Botanic Reserve. At this time of year there could be some interesting terrestrial orchids as well. Bring your chair, lunch, sun block and cooler bag and come for a really good day out.

You do not have to be a member to join us for the day.

January In Your Garden

What a lovely month this is with everything bursting with growth after those long months of dryness. With a little effort, this month you can have early flowers and a colourful garden even without the benefit of our non-existent municipal water.

Flowers to Plant: Amaranthus, Antirrhinum, Aquilegia, Aster, Balsam, Calendula, Cineraria, Conbolvulus, Cosmos, Geum, Gypsophilia, Iceland Poppy, Linaria, Marigold, Nemesia, Nigella, Pansy, Petunia, Portulaca, Rudbeckia, Primula, Stocks, Stokesia, Sweet William, Verbena, Wallflower and Zinnia.

Your regular maintenance is very important this month, that is, weeding, regular mowing of lawns, feeding of both vegetables and plants to maintain vigorous growth.

Dahlias which have been in flower will benefit from an application of D Compound (fork in about 25g around each plant).

Cut away Hydrangea heads and top dress with Ammonium Sulphate (Epsom Salts). Hydrangeas are the most rewarding plants and will give flowers for nearly five months of the year with a little care. They do best in semi shade as too dense shade will result in lots of foliage but few flowers. Maintain the colour by controlling the content of the soil. This should be acidic for blue and alkaline for pink.

Roses which are showing new growth and buds will benefit from 60g of fertiliser forked LIGHTLY into the soil.

You can also plant out new roses this month. Just protect new bushes from the hot sun with a grass wigwam.

Bougainvilleas are ideal plants for dry conditions and if planted this month should be well established by the end of the rains. There are so many varieties now and you can choose from standard bushes, climbing or even Bonsai ones to keep in your home. You can plant at any time of the year but it does save on water to plant them now.

It is important to prepare the site properly. Dig a hole a metre square and metre deep. Place a good layer (15cm) of broken bricks/stones in the bottom and then fill with a mix of two parts WELL rotted manure, two parts good topsoil and one part river sand. It is also beneficial, if you can manage it, to put 1kg bonemeal and 1kg Calcium Nitrate in. Water the hole well and leave to settle for two to three days before planting.

Once your Bougainvillea is well established cut the watering to a minimum as they flower more prolifically under drought conditions.

Big Birding Day Kanyenganyenga Stars Visit to Hippo Pools

Big Birding Day is an event that is organised by BirdLife Zimbabwe every year over the last weekend of November. The aim is to have fun while at the same time increasing awareness of our wonderful bird life and introducing more people to the joys of birding. Teams of birders (and aspiring birders) come together (two to four people) and compete against each other over a 24 hour or 36 hour period to see the most number of bird species covering different habitats within a 50km radius of the starting point. The team that spots the most number of bird species, wins!

On 24 November 2018, an exuberant Kanyenganyenga Stars team consisting of Jimmy Muropa, John Zhuwao, Karen Chiro and John Vekris travelled to Hippo Pools in Umfurudzi to take part in the annual Big Birding Day competition. There was a great feeling of anticipation and excitement on the way to Umfurudzi as all the team members were venturing into unfamiliar territory, with one shared goal of finding as many different bird species as possible, including lifers.

Hippo Pools Wilderness Camp is located inside the Umfurudzi Safari Area, 150 kilometres north-east of Harare (www.hippopools.co.zw).

Upon arrival at the camp, the Kanyenganyenga Stars were welcomed graciously by the Hippo Pools staff and introduced to Tadious Ndadziira, who was to be our companion and guide for the main bird walk the following morning. The campsite allocated to us was set in a beautiful environment with a great view overlooking the Mazowe River, only a few metres away. We quickly

Enjoying nature while bird watching erected our tents and proceeded to prepare and later enjoy a well-earned supper, under the trees and the stars. Just after midnight, team Kanyenganyenga went to sleep to the sounds of the hooting African Wood-Owl and that became the first entry on our Big Birding Day list.

On D-day, the Kanyenganyenga Stars woke up very early, to the calls of the Black-backed Puffback and a female African Goshawk in a nest on top of a nearby tree, demanding food from its mate. And, once we got up, it was a sight to behold various water bird species Kanyenganyenga Stars with Tadious Ndadziira, Hippo making an appearance on a little island on the Mazowe Pools bird guide River, right across from our campsite. The birds included the Green-backed (or Striated) Heron, a Pied Kingfisher, Reed Cormorants, many Village Weavers and even a White-backed Night-Heron.

At 0545 hours, we set off through the surrounding woodland and across to the nearby Umfurudzi River. The Livingstone’s Flycatcher greeted us early on, not far from our campsite, but unfortunately we could only hear it, never seeing it, perched high up in the tree canopy!

When we reached Umfurudzi River, which is very low but still flowing at this time of the year, we walked downstream to the confluence with the Mazowe River.

Whilst sauntering along the partly dry river bed, a Half-collared Kingfisher flew gracefully by and all team members were in awe as they were able to see clearly the bright colours of this beautiful bird.

Spotting hippos as well as birds Back inside the surrounding woodland, Jimmy spotted a big Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl roosting on a tall, old Acacia Tree and all the birders had a great view of the magnificent bird. Soon afterwards, we came across a lone Crowned Hornbill surveying the area atop another tree. This was an invigorating and rewarding early morning birding walk, as Tadious helped the Harare birders to familiarise themselves with new bird species and their calls, and each member eagerly noted down the various finds.

During this time Team Kanyenganyenga actually learnt to identify the call of the Narina Trogon, the Red-chested Cuckoo (with its monotonous but distinct ’piet-my-vrou’ call) and the Grey-backed Camaroptera, which kept calling in the distance. 74 bird species were recorded during the three hour walk and team members were able to check off several personal lifers.

After taking a breather and enjoying a substantial brunch, the Kanyenyenga Stars drove further afield to another section of Hippo Pools called T32, and walked further upstream along the Umfurudzi River. Walking along the banks of the river, the team came across raptors hovering and gliding about in the sky, including the Wahlberg’s Eagle, the Bateleur, Steppe Buzzard and what we identified as a Tawny Eagle. It was quite a splendid scene as the four intrepid birders were able to clearly distinguish and differentiate the various species of raptors present. As the team walked further along the river, the calls of the Narina Trogon

could again be heard and another 14 bird species were recorded in this area, including the Bearded Scrub-robin and the Red-headed Weaver.

With the sun beginning to set, a visit to a nearby dam resulted in three more bird species being found, namely the Giant Kingfisher, the Red-billed Firefinch and the African Wattled Lapwing, bringing our total up to 91 bird species, for Big Birding Day. All in all, team Kanyenganyenga Stars managed to turn the cumbersome challenge of walking several kilometres in difficult conditions into a fun-filled and rewarding expedition where a large number of species were recorded, while we had fun and appreciated the importance and beauty of nature in our very own Zimbabwe.

Tree of the Month Munondo Julbernardia globiflora

By JP Felu Family: Fabaceae - Caesalpinoideae Common names: Munondo; Nd: Ishungu, Umtshonkwe; Sh: Munondo; This tree was named after Jules Bernard, a former governor of Gabon.

The family Caesalpinoideae is a sub-family of the Fabaceae family. The Fabaceae family is huge and has been subdivided into three sub-families. In Southern Africa alone we count over 30 species in the Caesalpinoideae family.

The group is difficult to characterise. The Mimosoideae (Acacia) have mimosa-like flowers, either pom-pom or elongated spikes; the Papilionoideae have characteristic asymmetric sweet-pea shape flowers; and if they are neither, think of Caesalpinoideae. When there are no flowers it is generally possible to eliminate Mimosoideae if the leaflets are very small and the leaves bipinnate (apart from Peltophorum africanum which is a member of the Caesalpinoideae). When all else fails, I refer to Sauvignon.com and become a treetotaller.

Julbernardia is a well-rounded tree growing to some 18 meters in height. As it is a constituent of the Miombo Woodlands, it must not be confused with Brachystegia spiciformis. Both have similar paripinnate leaves but Julbernardia generally has more leaflets. Most importantly, in B. spiciformis, the last pair is always the largest, but never in Julbernardia.

Another easy way to tell them apart is the way the pods grow. The Brachystegia pods grow all over the tree, whereas Julbernardia is a botanical Medusa, with all pods protruding outside the crown. The leaves of Julbernardia are paripinnate with four or six, sometimes even eight pairs of opposite leaflets; rachis velvety; leaflets oblong to oblong-lanceolate, dark green, both surfaces finely hairy, margin entire and ciliate, apex rounded, sometimes slightly notched. The base is broadly tapering and asymmetric while the petioles are around three cm long and velvety. The flowers are white and borne in January in stout, dark-brown hairy panicles. The pod is a hard woody pod dehiscing explosively in September.

An interesting feature of this tree is its susceptibility to invasion by Berlinianche aethiopica. Berlinianche is a holoparasite, vegetatively much reduced. The only visible parts are the flowers pushing through the bark.

The flowers (at least the female flowers, the plant being monoecious) are numerous and showy, clustered, sessile, 2 to 2.5 mm in diameter, hemispherical, bright blood-red turning brown and short lived producing a globose berry.

The wood of Julbernardia planes to a highly lustrous finish. Unfortunately it is very prone to attacks by borers and termites and it’s durability is poor. It is used in furniture making and also, in times past and

surprisingly enough, for railway sleepers. Medicinally it is used to treat diarrhoea and conjunctivitis.

KIDZCAN

Kidzcan intends to undertake an awareness programme supported by UNICEF and with the direction of the MOHCC early January 2019.

The awareness programme will commence with the training of 200 Health Promoters and 100 Nurses, 2 Nurses drawn from each of the 50 Clinics in Harare and Chitungwiza. This will be a pilot programme to be cascaded to other provinces hopefully in 2019 going forward.

The pilot programme will concentrate on 2 types of cancers that normally affect children in Zimbabwe but which can easily be treated or prevented, namely Willms Tumor( Kidney Cancer) and Retinoblastoma (cancer of the eyes). Of the 2, Retino is more easily recognizable in children, and the Nurses and Health Promoters will be trained on how to use simple tools like touches to check the eyes of the children when these children present at clinics for their usual checkups where the Baby Clinic Card is used.

Almost every Zimbabwean child has had to visit a clinic at certain specific times until they turn 5, and this campaign intends to advocate for the inclusion of the 2 cancers on the Baby Card so that a Nurse checks for these as they do their usual checkups.

During the training, the signs and symptoms of the 2 will be discussed by various medical experts. We believe as Kidzcan that no child should die of these cancers going forward as they can be dealt with if children present early for diagnosis and treatment.

The Yellow Bus Trust

By Victoria Drury We began doing what we could with limited funds. We ran workshops for teachers on how to use recyclable materials in the classrooms, on ways of teaching special needs pupils, on how to do Science experiments using everyday items and various others topics which would enable teachers to teach more effectively. We also began to collect stationery which we left with the Heads, so they could ensure that each pupil had enough for their needs. We were invited to other schools, and at present we work with two secondary schools, three primary schools and one ECD.

The idea of the Yellow Bus Trust was conceived in about 2000. Seeing children running to school in the rural areas got me thinking about the quality of education they were receiving. I was sure that they had dedicated teachers, but I also knew that those teachers were having to teach under very difficult conditions. How could I, a teacher of long standing help?

Inspired, in part, by the flying Doctors of Australia, I wondered if I could equip a bus with teaching aids and resources, such as a portable laboratory, laptops, worksheets and a projector so that we could show educational films. The bus would visit clusters of schools, staying for a day at a time, and then moving on. A big vision!

In 2017, I took the plunge and endeavoured to bring the vision to reality. I resigned from my job, began to communicate with the Ministry of Education, and formed a Trust which was registered in August 2017. There are four Trustees, Heidi Visagie, Jennifer Mudehwe, Simon Muzenda and myself. Except for Simon, he is our financial advisor, we are all teachers.

The Ministry allowed us to run a pilot project at Marikopo Secondary School in the Seke area. We gave out questionnaires and discovered that whilst some of our assumptions had been correct, there were areas that we had not even thought about. For instance, the Primary School at Marikopo had not had paint for several years, the Early Child Development (ECD) teachers, had found it difficult to do Arts and Crafts because of the lack of basics. Not every pupil had the necessary stationery and none of the schools had a library or enough Readers.

We have branched out into helping the informal learning centres established and run by the Simbarashe Trust.

We have run workshops for their mentors and provided some teaching resources. We have also started teaching children who spend time on the streets. We work in conjunction with ACTs, who provide counselling, teaching on sexual issues and AIDS awareness, and the Anglican Cathedral who house the school and have a feeding program. We regularly use recyclable material to make educational games and aids, and we have started writing relatable readers and books for the pupils we deal with.

We are a small organisation with a big heart for the poor and disadvantaged! God is our provider and our guide, and everything we achieve is because if His love for us!

The Coffee Column The Mustard Seed It was a sweltering and therefore lazy Sunday mid-morning, so it was decided that brunch would be the order of the day because doing dishes was just a non-starter. So I made my way to Highlands and The Mustard Seed which is tucked away on Ridgeway South.

After taking my seat at a quaint table on the quiet patio, it was lovely to see the garden beginning to green-up with the onset of our rainy season. The inviting shaded sunken in seating area and water feature which were both in my line of sight gave me several ideas for some of my own backyard sprucing DIY adventures for 2019...a story for another day.

On this occasion, my caffeine indulgence came after partaking in a light and appetizing brunch. I opted for a lattĂŠ paired with a waffle as a much needed dessert, because...there is always room for dessert! My steaming, towering glass of chocolatey-brown goodness arrived

promptly, followed shortly by four golden waffle quarters with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and syrup.

Alternating between the warm beverage and fluffy sugary dessert while enjoying the views of the garden was the ideal way to end off my week and prepare me for that ever so satisfying Sunday afternoon nap.

Why Your Pocket Matters Photography

By Ron Mazhindu Before the days of smartphones, if you can remember such a time - taking a great photo was a labour intensive process. You’d have buy a fancy camera and editing software for your desktop computer and invest some serious time and energy into learning how to use them.

But thanks to our mobile devices and the editing apps that come with them, we can now take high quality photos and edit them without too many bells and whistles all from the same device that we use to make calls. Taking a great photo on your smartphone is not as simple as pointing and shooting. SO, here are some tips to improve your smartphone photography game.

1) Focus on one subject.

Many of the best photos include just one, interesting subject. Some professional photographers say that the subject shouldn’t fill the entire frame, and that two-thirds of the photo should be negative space that helps the subject stand out even more. But be sure you tap the screen of your smartphone to focus the camera on your subject to ensure that it’s focused and the lighting is optimised. Once you’ve taken your photo, you can use filters and apps to make the subject even more vivid, or to crop it to frame the subject correctly. The brightness, contrast and saturation of the photo can also be adjusted accordingly all from your phone.

2) Play with reflections.

There’s something so idyllic about seeing the sky reflected in a body of water, our eyes are drawn to reflections. So look for opportunities to play with them in photos. There are plenty of out of the box places to find reflections; puddles, larger bodies of water, mirrors, sunglasses, drinking glasses and metallic surfaces are just a few.

Repetitive patterns are very pleasing to the eye. They appear whenever strong graphic elements are repeated over and over again such as lines, geometric shapes, forms and colours. These patterns can make a strong visual impact and photographing something like a beautiful, tiled floor can be enough to create a striking image. Other times, it’s more fun to keep an eye out for where they appear naturally or unintentionally.

4) Use natural light.

Using a smartphone’s flash tends to make a photo look overexposed, negatively altering colours and making human subjects look washed out. Instead, take advantage of the sources of natural light you can find, even after dark. That gives you a chance to play with shadows or create a silhouette with other ambient sources of light, like traffic and surrounding buildings. Once you’ve taken the photo, play with the “Exposure” tool in your favourite photo editing app to see if you can make the image slightly brighter, without making it too grainy.

5) Don’t be afraid to edit.

Composing and taking your smartphone photo is just the first step to making it visually compelling. Editing your photos is the next important step. Filters can be a valuable photographic tool, particularly when it comes Focused photograph to two goals: i) Removing blemishes from a picture,

and ii) making food look even more delicious. One of my favourite apps is the Adobe Light Room App. With this app I can use pre-sets that I have created on my computer and sync them to my mobile app and editing will be done faster and it’s quicker because my phone is always with me.

GRILLED CHICKEN BRUSCHETTA With Melty Mozzarella

Serves: 2 Prep: 35 mins Cooking: 25 mins DiďŹƒculty: Easy

INGREDIENTS

4 boneless skinless chicken breasts 1 tsp. dried oregano 100g mozzarella cheese 3 ripe tomatoes 200g cherry tomatoes 1 lemon 1 pack basil

2 tbsp. coconut oil Salt and pepper to season

METHOD

STEP 1: Pound the chicken breasts to 1 inch thickness. Juice the lemon. To make the marinade place half the lemon juice, 1/2 tsp. each of salt and pepper and the dried oregano in a large Ziploc bag (or a bowl). Add the chicken breasts and marinate for 30 minutes.

STEP 2: Meanwhile, small dice the tomatoes and cherry tomatoes and shred the basil. combine the tomatoes, basil and remaining lemon juice and season with salt and pepper. Set aside. Thinly slice the mozzarella and set aside.

STEP 3: Heat a grill pan to medium high. Add 2 tbsp. coconut oil to the pan, transfer the chicken to the pan discarding excess marinade. Grill the chicken over medium-high heat until cooked through, 8 to 10 minutes per side.

STEP 4: Divide the tomato and basil salad between plates. While chicken is still in the grill pan, top each breast with 1 slice of mozzarella and cover the pan for 2 to 3 minutes, until the cheese is melted. Place the chicken on top of the tomato mixture and serve.

SUGGESTION: FOR THE KIDDIES! We think they will love this dish. If you replace the tomato basil salad with some cucumber, carrots and sweet potato fries we are sure it will be a winner!
