From the Editor

The team at Ndeipi Magazine are thrilled to bring you the 112th issue of Ndeipi. With a fresh look, some new features, and even a new editor; we hope that this issue will keep you informed on what is Happening in Harare. My name is Penny Pangeti and I hope that Ndeipi remains more than just a Harare City Guide but also a great way to learn about the people that call Harare home. I assure you that this issue is essential August holiday reading!

From the 8th of August to the 10th of September it’s the school holidays. A wonderful time to reconnect while trying out one of the many Fun Holiday Activities. From Coding to Horse Riding, Harare offers you a veritable smorgasbord of activities to choose from.

What’s Happening in Harare features a music festival, Motocross, Junior Cricket, Birding activities and fairs. Enjoy the warmer weather in the garden with Morag’s August tasks for your Garden. Wind down with Inside the Pages as Dean Duplessis recommends a great book to stick your teeth into. My Harare, will introduce you to an intriguing person who will share why they love Harare and the hope is that we will find that we are more alike than we believe. Pull out the restaurant guide and challenge yourself to try out somewhere you haven’t been before. You never know what culinary delights await.

If you’re not lucky enough to be on holiday in August we do have a long weekend for the Heroes’ and Defence Forces public holidays.

Use the time to travel, fuel allowing! Let some of our explorers inspire you. We followed Steve Vickers to Egypt and the Africa Cup of Nations, Melissa spent a weekend at Holiday Inn Harare and Rwendo Life visited Pasichigare Resort in Domboshawa.

The 12th of August is International Youth Day. A day designated as a celebration of the role of young people as essential partners in change, and an opportunity to raise awareness of challenges facing the world’s youth. This year’s theme is Transforming Education.

Wouldn’t it be fun to celebrate this theme by teaching the young people around you something new? Life’s lessons are best learnt away from the classroom and in August there’s lots of time to reconnect in that way.

MASHONALAND PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY MPS holds competitions on the 3rd Tuesday of every month except December. Beginners through to Advanced photographers are most welcome.

LIFESTYLE This year’s Wimbledon finished on Sunday 14 July with an epic men’s final between top seeded Novak Djokovic and second seeded Roger Federer who played the longest final in the event’s history at 4 hours and 57 minutes on Centre Court. After saving two match points, Djokovic would emerge the winner in a fifth set tie-breaker at 12 games all.

Person of Interest Cara Black Wins Another Trophy at Wimbledon 2019

During this final, on Court One, Cara Black from Zimbabwe was playing in the Ladies Invitational Doubles Final with Martina Navratilova against Daniela Hantuchova and Marion Bartoli.

The match would go to a third set deciding tie-break with Cara and Martina clinching it 6-0, 3-6, 10-8. The duo also won this event in 2017.

The invitational doubles, as its name suggests, is an invitational event for former top players who are invited back to participate in this event. Martina Navratilova is a household name who has 18 Grand Slam singles titles (9 at Wimbledon), while Bartoli won the Wimbledon singles event in 2013 and Hantuchova reached the quarter finals of the singles in 2002 and had a very successful doubles career.

An incredible year for Cara, she won the girls’ doubles title again, this time with Irina Selyutina from Kazakhstan. This combination had also won the French Open Girls’ Doubles title that year.

Cara also won the Girls Singles title at Wimbledon and came runner-up to Justine Henin at the French Open, an incredible achievement. She capped off the year by also winning the US Open Singles title.

So how does Cara get invited to such a prestigious event? How many Zimbabweans realise what Cara has achieved in her Wimbledon career? It may come as a surprise to some that Cara has multiple Wimbledon junior and senior titles.

Cara ‘painted Wimbledon black’, as one press headline announced, by winning both the Ladies Doubles title (with Rennae Stubbs from Australia) and Mixed Doubles titles (with her brother, Wayne).

As a professional player, Cara is among the most decorated doubles players in WTA history, spending 163 weeks at No.1, the third-most of all-time. In total she has won ten Grand Slam titles in both women’s doubles and mixed doubles at the different Slams.

She defended her ladies doubles title, this time with Liezel Huber from South Africa

By winning the mixed doubles at the 2010 Australian Open, Cara became only the third woman in the Open Era to complete a Career Grand Slam in mixed doubles (after Martina Navratilova and Daniela Hantuchova).

Cara married Australian Brett “Moose’ Stephens in 2006 and has two sons. She divides her time between Australia and Zimbabwe.

The Power of Books Supplying books to out of town libraries through #BOOKS4ZIM

By Kate Chambers In 2011, I was driving with my family through Marange district in eastern Zimbabwe when we were stopped at a police checkpoint. A young police officer approached our car from the passenger’s side and pointed to three books I had lying on the dashboard. Could he have one, he asked. They weren’t particularly recent books. One was a gift for my son, small at the time. Which one should I give the policeman? In his request, I recognised a hunger I’d known so often: the need to have something new to read with its promise of new things to learn and think about.

books I receive with requests from particular libraries, projects and booklovers. Some want recent fiction. Some want children’s books, as new as possible, because we instinctively judge a book by its cover! Magazines are often requested: sometimes this is an easy entry point for more reluctant readers. Biographies are popular. One of the projects wants motivational texts. Pens, crayons and paper are useful: there’s research that suggests encouraging children to draw boosts literacy.

Books and libraries have always been my life.

As a child growing up in rural eastern England, I spent hours in a library in Horncastle, built over the fantastic remains of the town’s Roman Wall.

With the river on the other side of the large windows, I migrated through the stacks - through children’s, to teenage and large print and the tables behind the books where the newspapers were laid out. Later there were university libraries and the Francis Trigge Chained Library in Grantham, the bibliotheque in the 15th arrondissement in Paris, another one in Nice.

Always more books than a person could ever read or money could buy - which is, of course, the point of libraries. Books for all, whatever your means.

For the first few years I concentrated on libraries and projects in Manicaland. When I started posting pictures of book piles to Twitter in 2015, more Zimbabweans got involved - sending me books and helping get them out to the libraries and sometimes informal classes. One of the best things about the project for me has been the people I’ve come into contact with. The people who send books and the people who use them.

The librarians in libraries where schoolchildren go to revise. Elvis Ndebele, who several months ago started running a mobile library project in Tsholotsho. Curran Musada, who runs a library project in Chipinge that also seeks to educate children about wildlife and conservation. Baron Chikuni, who’s with great determination trying to restock a library in Zvishavane. Kumbirai Dzikiti who’s distributing into communities in rural Zvimba. Like me, they love books and they know their power. They hold the future in their hands.

I mentioned the policeman’s request for books in a piece I wrote for a US newspaper. My editor mailed me a few days later: he’d received some emails, all with the same question. How could readers help?This is how #Books4Zim started.

Readers started sending books: from the US and the UK mostly but occasionally from other places like Poland, South Africa and most recently, Israel. From the start I’ve made a point of giving books and stationery only to libraries, clubs and institutions that ask for them. No dumping of unwanted books on institutions that don’t want or need them: that’s something I feel very strongly about. As far as possible, I match the

By Dean Duplessis One of the few joys of living in an incredibly demanding environment, is the pleasure of losing yourself in the pages of a book, or in my case, the voice of the narrator of an audio book. Over the years, I have built up a reasonable collection of audio books, from crime and thrillers, to historical fiction.

The Extraordinary life of Sam Hell,

Why you should read this book: It will resonate with a person who may be perceived to be abnormal or different. The person who may not have been the best looking or most popular in their social group. If you can relate to being discriminated against because of language or background differences then you can relate to Sam Hell. It speaks of the power of the love of family and the importance of true friendship in a world that can often be cruel.

STAR RATING OUT OF 5:

Technology is something I have always been slightly afraid of. That was until I bought my very first iPhone 4S back in 2012. Several of my visually impaired friends had taken the plunge from the standard Nokia phone, which had also produced a program called Talks. A very robotic sounding voice, but absolute joy for us blind folk who had to rely on sighted people to read SMS messages for us. I purchased my first iPhone with trepidation and angst.

Nevertheless I began the tortuous process of changing from a phone with a keypad to a phone with a touchscreen.

My curiosity started to get the better of me and I ventured out of my comfort zone, and immediately discovered an App called Audible. This isn’t an App that was designed for visually impaired people, as there are millions of people who love listening to an audio book, when walking the dog doing the laundry, or commuting to and from work. My world was instantly transformed into a playground of joy as I chose authors I liked, such as Wilbur Smith, Martina Cole Karin Slaughter. I also discovered new authors, such as Conn Iggulden, Ben Kane, Bernard Cornwall, Stephen Leather, and could also revert to my bed-time favourites, such as James Herriot.

I am currently reading a deeply moving book about a young boy who was born with a rare condition which caused the colour of his eyes to be red from birth. Despite Sam Hill, the main August 2019 - Issue 112

protagonist book being constantly bullied and ridiculed, he had a circle of very close friends.

Ernie, who was the school’s first black student, and Micky, short for Michaela, who also goes into business with him.

Narrated by the author, the book reminds us that there is always an opportunity to use what you have to the best of your opportunity.

I love this book, because Sam Hill, who then becomes Sam Hell or Devil Boy, reminds me a lot of myself. I too faced many horrors as an English speaking boy with an Afrikaans sounding surname who went to school in South Africa amongst a bunch of arrogant, ignorant and racist people. And that is the power of a good book. Allowing you to see yourself in the stories of the characters.

Dean Duplessis is the world’s first and only blind cricket analyst, and journalist. He was born with tumors behind both retinas, destroying his eyesight before birth.Dean started his love affair with cricket in 1991, when South Africa were readmitted into the international cricketing fraternity. His favourite rock band is Def Leppard and when he was in school always said he would start his own group called Blind Cheetah!

Sleep is a Necessity Not a Luxury

By Jolandi Becker 2. Children grow when they sleep! It’s simple, the growth hormone is mainly secreted during deep sleep. Parents can also often observe and see growth and learning taking place during sleep as babies are quite active while sleeping.

3. Sleep can influence your child’s weight.

Studies indicate that lack of sleep is linked to obesity. Weight problems in turn can lead to heart problems. I have seen the effects of ill-sleep in different ways. Well-rested babies start eating and drinking better when they have sufficient energy to do so and they get that energy from sleep.

Often parents feel guilty about their need to train their children to sleep. “Why can’t I wake up so many times for my baby if they need that?”

While the fact remains that inevitably there is a time during the newborn phase where you will have to wake up to feed your little one, there is a time for your baby to start sleeping better. This “time to start sleeping better” is not only directed by the parents’ wishes but it is a necessary step for the development of your little one.

Just think of yourself and how you feel when you baby wakes up three times a night? What makes you think you baby does not feel the same?

While they’re still cuter and look better than we do, due to their youth, they too struggle after poor sleep. In fact, they are probably worse-off, as they need almost double the amount of sleep than we need.

Let’s look at some reasons why sleep is a necessity for your little one: I. The first and most obvious reason is that you and your baby will be in a better mood. Mums have noted the significant impact on how they perceive their babies when both parties have been sleeping well. Babies have a better temperament, are more approachable and are generally less likely to be cranky after having a good night’s sleep. Similarly, well-rested toddlers are more able to control their emotions and think before throwing a tantrum.

4. Better sleep protects us against getting sick. During sleep our body produces proteins called cytokines, which the body depends on to combat infection, illness, and stress. Even as adults we are more irritable and prone to stress and illness when we do not have a good night’s sleep.

5. Sleep helps with better attention span and increases learning. Interestingly, attention problems such as ADHD and lack of sleep have very similar symptoms. In recent years, sleep analysis forms a very integral part of diagnosing ADHD and related conditions. With better attention comes better memory retention and this assists with learning.

6. Sleep lowers the risk of injury, even when assessing adults. Pilots have to sign documentation to show that they have slept eight hours before operating a plane. Children, too, are clumsier and make more mistakes with their movements if they are not well-rested.

The benefits of sleeping well go far beyond just feeling better. Parents should know that sleep is not a luxury and it is not something they should feel guilty about wanting; it is a necessity for their little ones to grow up healthy.

My Harare

By Penny Pangeti Harare is a fascinating place.

Filled with many interesting people each with a story to tell. With your busy and stressful lifestyles when was the last time you stopped to have a conversation with a stranger? Beyond the awkward niceties in the elevator or the quick chat about the weather.

It’s sometimes refreshing to learn about a stranger’s lived reality. MY HARARE does just that. A snapshot of an ordinary person that will hopefully prove that we are more alike than we think.

I met Terrence Amos hard at work at the Aspindale Market Demonstration Plot. Not only does he work in Horticulture; but is a talented footballer, an afro pop artist with his eyes set on becoming a film producer. Born and raised in Kambuzuma Harare, Terrence has had an interesting journey.

Although academically gifted, it was on the sports field that he really came into his own.

‘I played for Herentals and did very well which helped to convince my mother to allow me to continue to play. Before seeing me on the field with my captain’s armband and having the crowd cheering my name; she did all she could to stop me playing football.’

Terrence was scouted for the Aspindale Park Football team because of his skills on the pitch and not only moved football teams but also got a job. He is part of the team that cleared and prepared the land and set up what is a growing demonstration plot for some of the top seed and irrigation companies in Zimbabwe. Their work is part of the bigger Aspindale Market Project.

‘I didn’t go to university for what I do now but I have found that I love working on the land and am naturally good at what I do. I spend my days

outside, surrounded by nature and am gaining valuable work experience that will help me in the future, it’s not a bad deal!’

Terrence loves Harare and says he believes it is the best place for a young person to try to develop their passion. Whether it’s filming his latest feature, producing music or learning about aquaculture he says he wouldn’t live anywhere else.

‘People from my city are confident and can make friends with anyone. We are creative and aren’t afraid to challenge the status quo.’

That’s not to say he hasn’t faced challenges; from lack of funding for further study or feeling misunderstood because of his youth. He wishes young people could be given more opportunities not only to reach their personal potential but to also develop our city. Terrence hopes to start an arts and sports academy. A space for talented dreamers to flourish. And with his determination and drive that certainly doesn’t seem like a far-off dream.

Time Out at Pasichigare Resort A Hidden Gem

It is always exciting waking up on the day of a new adventure. A new destination that we discovered through a friend who recommended it as an ideal couples getaway. We were sold and set off towards the hilly and mountainous region.

Pasichigare Resort is located in Domboshava (Mashonaland East Province), a village just 40km from Harare. The name is derived from the Shona words; dombo meaning “rock” and shava (pronounced shawa) meaning “light brown”.

In just 45 minutes we were in Domboshava.The environment swiftly changed from the hustle and bustle of the city to mountains peeping through the horizon,huts and cattle on scotch carts. After 33km we were on the dust road which is a 7km stretch to the resort. The dirt road is decent and easily navigable with a small car. The scenery was breathtaking as we drove towards the entrance of Pasichigare Resort.

All kinds of trees and vegetation and the fresh breeze quietly assuring us that we had made the right choice.

We were warmly welcomed by Tendai and Rejoice and checked into our room. A cosy bush cottage with many cultural elements. Rather than rest we went straight into the day’s activities.Before heading out Tendai shared with us a brief history of the resort.

Pasichigare is a shona word which means history or ancient times when Africa was untouched.

The resort sits on over 200 hectares of natural rocky landscape which is meticulously preserved and maintained as the area holds a lot of the history of the way the Shona people used to live in the past. The epic views and leisure facilities and rich Zimbabwean heritage make Pasichigare a unique hidden gem. The set-up of the resort is rustic and pared-back allowing visitors to connect to the simple rural way of life.

After the history lesson; our tour guide Rejoice took us to the first site called The Chief’s Court – which is where ancient gatherings would take place to rule, solve problems and pass decisions for the community. It consists of chairs made from piles of rock where the chief sat and held court. Such gatherings still happen in some rural communities to this day, with the rocks replaced by modern chairs!

Rejoice then took us down a slope to see the Bushman Paintings, arguably some of the best kept examples of this art in the country. With intricate detail we were able to get a clear picture of what animals were painted by the bushman.Next we hiked up the mountain, but

breakfast we were on that hiking trail again, this time to go for a swim at the natural pools at a nearby river.

The path leading to the natural pool is lined with different trees and plant species. We made it to the pool and soaked ourselves in the fresh cool water cascading from the mountains.

We continued our hike to explore some fascinating caves and once again we had to crawl and squeeze ourselves through the tunnels in order to see some amazing natural lines and patterns within the caves. If you’re keen on camping the caves would be an ideal place to experience natural surroundings.

this was no ordinary hike.To make it to the top of the mountain we had to squeeze in through a 70m passage which they call “Point Of No Return” – because once you use that route to hike up the mountain you cannot use the same route down. It was an amazing yet terrifying experience crawling on our hands and feet to the top to catch a glimpse of the breathtaking views, it was well worth it. We spent some time marveling at the epic views until it was time to view the sunset on another mountain called Gomorembudzi (mountain of goats). We arrived at the peak of the mountain just to see the sun setting and what a marvelous sight. A great day to end an eventful day.

Day 2 This day began with a 5 am hike up a nearby mountain in order to watch the sunrise. It took us about 20 minutes to get to the peak of the mountain and we waited as golden rays began to emerge as the sun rose above the horizon.

This was accompanied by the sound of the birds echoing through the forest. After a quick August 2019 - Issue 112

Our last activity of the day was a visit the cultural village where we learnt the practical tools that the Shona used in ancient times. The cultural village consists of mud huts, clay pots, spears, axes and musical instruments. Pasichigare has become a research and resource center for many schools wanting to learn about the history and culture of ancient Zimbabwe.

A Weekend at Holiday Inn

By Melissa Katunga Holiday Inn Harare is along Samora Machel Avenue. It is an international franchise brand now under the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG). I had no trouble finding parking in the spacious car park with around the clock security.

Tanaka greeted me eagerly, not in the reception or the lobby but while I was still in the parking lot. He had noticed that I needed assistance hauling my slightly overpacked suitcase out of my car. Tanaka effortlessly pulled out my suitcase and directed me towards the entrance.

The cheerful faces at the reception were very welcoming, the ladies were helpful and ensured that check-in was over within a couple of minutes. After being handed my door key and wifi instructions we made our way up to my room for the weekend which was on the eighth floor. Tanaka pointed out all the amenities I had at my disposal before he left me to settle in, these included tea and coffee making facilities, a flat screen television with an assortment of satellite channels, room service and how to utilise the air conditioning system. They had me at room service! Having breakfast in bed is always a treat.

Once settled in, I heard a soft knock at the door. It was Flora, the housekeeping supervisor who handed me a fruit basket to welcome me to the hotel. With the gift in hand I turned my attention to the pièce de résistance, the bed. In between chews of biltong I had fished out of my basket of goodies and logging on to the free wifi offered to guests, I fell on top of the covers into the cloudy embrace of the duvet. It was at this point that I noticed that the four pillows had distinctive lettering on each, ‘firm’ and ‘soft’ pretty self explanatory but the six-year-old in me enjoyed taking turns on each pillow to assess the difference. For those who have sleeping or back issues or even those who care about good pillows; I am sure having these options would be a welcome relief.

That afternoon I headed out and upon my return in the evening headed straight up to my room and the comfort of my cosy bed for the weekend. The plan was to snuggle in for August 2019 - Issue 112

a good movie. I ended up falling asleep soon after my head hit the pillow, the ‘soft’ pillow that is, nudge nudge! Stretching out on Sunday morning I reached straight for the telephone to order some room service. Hopping out of bed I opened my curtains to let in the warm winter sunshine. I adorned myself in a snug robe provided by the hotel and spotted the local newspaper, peaking from underneath my door. Following a quick face exfoliation and teeth brushing there was a knock on the door. I worked hard not to be over excited about food whilst I opened the door as the smell of eggs and bacon wafted in. Once alone with my meal I realised just how much food I was actually provided with, I was expecting just a full English breakfast but to my delight, there were muffins,

My alarm woke me on Monday morning, forcing the realisation that my weekend getaway was over. Wine Styles

In our last issue, we understood more about what wine is. In this issue we will explore various styles of wine, as this will help us identify wine that is pleasing to our palate.

Wine is made from grapes. What is interesting is that there are thousands of varieties of grapes within the Vitis Vinifera family. All of them with typical characteristics relating to their colour, size, shape and size of bunches, sugar and acid content, thickness and strength of skins, time to ripening, aromas etc. This does not differ from, say apples, where you have Granny Smith, Golden Delicious and Pink Lady etc.

They all taste different and we all have our preferences.

RED OR WHITE We generally have white grapes and red grapes.

White grapes are used to make white wine and will sometimes be blended with red grapes to make white, red or rosé wine. The colour pigment in grapes is stored in the skin. The juice of most grapes is actually clear and this includes red grapes. There is a small family of grapes called Teinturier, whose juice is actually red.

Red wine is therefore made from red grapes, however, white grape juice can be blended into that wine too.

SINGLE VARIETY OR BLENDS It is important for you to know whether the wine you are drinking is made from a single variety or is a blend. Most Champagne for example, is a blend and generally a blend of three varieties. These are Pinot Noir (red), Pinot Meunier (red) and Chardonnay (white). You might sometimes come across Champagne labelled Blanc de Blancs, this is French for white of whites and refers to a pure Chardonnay. You might also come across one labelled Blanc de Noirs for white of black, which will be Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, or both. There are also rules to August 2019 - Issue 112

blending that you need to understand. In South Africa for example, a wine is still considered a single variety if 85% of a single variety is used to make it. So a wine might have 85% Chardonnay and 15% Viognier and it can legally be called a Chardonnay.

COMMON TERMS There are certain terms that you may encounter when talking about grapes. You might come across the terms Variety, Varietal, Cultivar; they refer to the same thing and need not confuse you. Cultivar is actually a portmanteau of the words Cultivated and Variety. The term blend refers to the blending of different cultivars or different batches of the same wine called cuvée.

Cuvées might be from the same vintage but different patches of land, or they might be from different vintages or different winemakers. Keep in mind the 85% rule as well.

WINE STYLES You will find that wine comes in various shades of red, various shades of white or pink. Pink wine is referred to as rosé, a French term for pink.

Rosé is generally made by allowing red grape juice to remain in contact with the grape skin, thereby extracting colour. Alternatively blending red and white wine will also produce rosé.

Beyond the colour you will find what is known as the robe, wine becomes very fascinating offering a multitude of styles. In all its styles, wine can be sweet right through to dry. Some of the styles are as follows: Single Varietal – A wine made from a single variety of grape. It can be red, white, rosé and can be in many of the other styles. As different regions have different rules, a wine must satisfy the rules of its home region to qualify as a single varietal as discussed above.

Blend – A blend must consider the regional rules for minimums. It is then the blend of two or more varieties in pursuit of harmony and balance. Generally speaking sparkling wines are not thought of blends, although some of them are. The term is generally applied to explicit blends such as Cape Blends, Bordeaux style blends, Rhone style blends, Rioja style blends and many more interesting blends now available on the market. The blends can be sparkling, still, sweet, dry, fortified and so on.

Still Wine – This is wine without bubbles. It can be sweet, semi-sweet, dry, fortified, blended and single varietal.

Sparkling Wine – This is a style of wine that contains either naturally occurring carbon dioxide or carbon dioxide added to it. The bubbles may be big and last long or they may disappear quickly. Examples include Champagne from France, Prosecco from Italy, Cava from Spain, Méthode Cap Classique (called MCC) from South Africa and many others that are generally bottled with a caged cork in a thick glass bottle. This wine will also range from sweet to very dry.

With this wine whose examples are Port (from Portugal), Sherry (from Spain) etc, the fermented wine’s alcohol content is boosted by the addition of wine spirit. This increases the alcohol content while arresting further fermentation and increasing shelf life Each of these wines is made differently and we will explore them in more detail in future articles.

Alcohol content (mouthfeel) Wine can also be categorised as full bodied, medium bodied or light. These terms can be looked at first to define the alcohol content, but this is in combination with the mouthfeel of the wine. As a guideline, consider a wine with 9% to 11% as light, 12% to 13% as medium bodied and 14% to 16% as full bodied. There is definitely some cross over in those guidelines because of the mouthfeel and how the wine was made.

Wine is a journey of discovery. Unpacking the detail for each of the styles is a big job best done through tasting.Taste as many different wines as you can and avoid limiting yourself to one category or cultivar.

Ten Midlands State University students from underprivileged backgrounds are celebrating after Chicken Hut took up the responsibility to pay tuition fees and associated living costs for them until they complete their studies. Six of the students are from the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, four from the Department of Accounting, Economics, Retail and Logistics Management as well as Tourism and Hospitality Management. In addition and in line with Sustainable Development Goal 8 which focuses on Decent Work and Economic Growth; Chicken Hut’s sponsored students receive hands-on job experience and industrial training during their attachment year.

We also believe in happy and well-motivated employees for great results. Our mission is to foster an interactive environment where employees and employers work together to achieve company goals. Oval (flat) Track Racing

By Brian Townsend Oval track racing takes place in Harare at Donnybrook Raceway, which is on the Arcturus Road between Chikurubi and the cement factory on the southside of Arcturus Road. The track has a graded decomposed granite surface which is watered to keep down the dust. The oval is about 500 metres in length but there are other sections that can be added onto it to vary the shape and size depending on whether cars, motorcycles or quad bikes are being raced.

Motorcycles are divided into MotoX classes depending on engine size and the age of the competitor. Cars are divided into two classes – 2300cc engines normally aspirated two wheel drives only and then a class of any car which does not apply to the first class which can be broken down into other classes if the numbers of entries allow. We only have one class of Quad bikes at this time.

The race meetings are restricted events sanctioned under Motorsport Zimbabwe and as such a Motorsport Zimbabwe restricted license is required but you can get a day license at the track. There are also rules and regulations

concerning competitor and spectator safety that must be adhered to.

Oval track racing is great for spectators, who can see the entire track and all of the action. There is a full bar and catering on site but spectators can also bring their own cooler boxes if they so wish.

It’s great for competitors as well and is relatively affordable to do. What’s even more exciting is that because the track is short, the racing will be close and having fellow competitors close by adds to the thrill of the race.

Racing starts at 2pm Saturday afternoon and finishes around 5pm with prize giving. The entry fee is $10 per person (swipe, cash, ecocash).

There are future plans for floodlit evening races in the summer months.

The Baby Expo 2019 In Support of Baby Heroes Africa

By Cindy Collyer Imagine being in such a desperate situation that you have no choice but to leave your baby on the steps of a church and walk away. Then imagine being that baby and what your prospects in life will be. Now stop imagining because this is a reality for many. This situation plays out in Harare reportedly; about 8 to 10 times EVERY week. Though devastating this tragedy has a silver lining. A tiny light at the end of the tunnel and it’s our aim to make that light a little brighter for each and every baby.

Baby Heroes Africa was founded in Bulawayo in 2015 by Chengetai Makuni and Dr Norbertta Washaya. While Baby Heroes Africa was formed to focus on pre-term babies, they also focus their work towards the well being of all abandoned babies. In some cases these little treasures find their forever families and are adopted by loving parents and some are reunited with their own families.Most of these children however are placed in an orphanage where they receive basic care with limited support from the outside world.

At The Baby Shop, we learned of this heartbreaking situation just under a year ago and have run campaigns for donations from our shop at Honeydew Lifestyle Centre. The support from parents, especially mums, and grandparents has been enormous and we are regularly able to hand boxes of clothes, toys, blankets and formula to a lost baby in desperate need of basics. Although this is an enormous help we want to do more.

This leads us to our exciting upcoming event.

Teaming up with our South African suppliers Tommee Tippee and Chelino - as well as our local suppliers of Huggies – we will be hosting The Baby Expo 2019. This is a first of its kind and a great way for everyone to contribute to this very worthy cause.

The Expo will run for two days, the 3rd and 4th of August 2019. The venue is 145 Enterprise August 2019 - Issue 112

On display will be a full range of products specifically suited to all baby needs. There will be a host of experts covering talks from breastfeeding, what to expect when you’re expecting, and much more. We’re creating an outing to look forward to, that will cater to the whole family – with a kids section, coffee bar, tasty treats, snacks and a wine and beer stand. So whether you already have a baby, are expecting a baby, have friends with babies, this event is for you, and you can bring the whole family along.

There will be exhibitors’ stalls, showcasing and selling their wares and a full range of products available to our Zimbabwean parents. We will release the “early bird tickets”, with priority parking first and these will be on sale at The Baby Shop located at the Honeydew Lifestyle Centre from the 1st of July 2019. Ticket holders will also stand a chance to win awesome prizes, and there will be give-aways and spot prizes on the days of the Expo as well as plenty of show day specials. There will be tickets available at the gate on the day.

The proceeds of the event will be converted into necessities such as formula, nappies, soap, blankets and clothing, and donated to this very worthy cause, it’s a drop in the ocean but with your support, combined with a fun, informative Baby Expo, we can make a difference to the lives of these innocent babies who have had a rough start.

2019 FIM Africa Motocross of African Nations Championship (MXoAN) 20th Anniversary Saturday 31st August and Sunday 1st September 2019

By Motocross Zimbabwe Bogwheelers MX Club in association with FIM Africa and Zimbabwe Motor Sport Federation have the honour of hosting this year’s MXoAN Championship.

We are proud to have been selected and approved by FIM Africa to host this prestigious event for the fourth time since the inception of the FIM Africa in 1999, which was held in Zimbabwe making this its 20 year anniversary.

An invitation has been extended to all 14 FIM Africa affiliated countries. In the past, Zimbabwe has had the pleasure of welcoming competitors from Botswana, Kenya, South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda and Zambia and we anticipate that 200+ riders will compete in this event. Morocco has shown a keen interest in attending this year as well.

2018 this event was held at the Mindola Mine track in Kitwe, Zambia. Zimbabwe had a fantastic result finishing 2nd overall to South Africa.

This year the Zimbabwe National Junior and Senior motocross team will have the thrill of going against some of the best riders from around Africa. Follow this with another soaking as the flowers drop. If you are growing berry fruits start a weekly watering programme and top dress with well rotted manure or fertiliser to promote heavy fruiting.

In your flower garden try to complete any division or movement of perennials as soon as you can. Divide any large clumps and replant the young shoots. Trim old leaves and stems and compost and fertiliser. Don’t forget to feed your daylilies and water them well. Your cannas need to be checked as they are normally neglected because they are so easy to grow.

I find they therefore become progressively thicker and produce poorer quality flowers. They should be lifted carefully and divided into smaller sections for planting into a well prepared bed, dug to a depth of at least 23cm to which has been added well rotted manure or fertiliser.

Nearly all varieties of summer flowers and vegetables can be grown this month. Remember that carrots, beans, melons and nasturtiums do not like being moved so should be planted directly where you want them but the rest can be grown in boxes and transplanted as required.

Near the end of the month mow your lawn short and aerate with a fork. Then apply fertiliser and water it well.

Do not forget to water and deadhead your petunias, pansies and violas to encourage prolific flowering. Sweet pea flowers need to be picked in order to encourage a longer flowering season.

A Month in The Land of the Pharaohs

Camel riding What a privilege. The demands of work can however be so great that there can be very little time for tourism. It just means I have to use the time wisely. As I was working as a TV commentator for AFCON, the first two weeks saw me either at the stadium or largely confined to my hotel room, preparing, researching and learning Alexandria how to pronounce the names of the players from Madagascar and Burundi – as I happened to be covering the group that had those two Steve Vickers was at the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt as a TV commentator, teams – the two most tongue-twisting in Africa! and as a reporter for Capitalk 100.4 FM and for I quickly learnt that the traffic in Egypt is exStar FM. After the first two weeks things became a little easier, and there were fewer games to cover.

That gave me a chance to have a day out in Alexandria, where I was based, by the beautiful blue Mediterranean Sea. The standout attraction there is the Bibliotheca Alexandria – the greatest centre of learning in the ancient world, established in 283BC, and at one stage having a copy of almost every book in the world at the time. A new Bibliotheca opened in 2002 near the original site – a vast and ultra-modern building. It’s the world’s largest library in terms of reading area, with space for 2500 people.

Amazingly, one of the huge walls is made with Zimbabwean granite. Apparently a whole year’s supply of Mutoko black granite was used.

I visited the Egyptian Museum with Warriors fan Alvin “Aluvah” Zhakata, who had by then completed his 44-day road trip from Cape to Cairo. The mummified blackened bodies of Pharaohs and their wives from around 3000 years ago are absolutely fascinating to see, and they still have teeth, fingernails, toenails and some have hair.

The large section devoted to the treasures of King Tutankhamun left me weak at the knees.

His 11-kilogramme death mask is considered by many to be the most beautiful object in the world. He was buried in a solid gold coffin of 110 kg, and, like Russian dolls, this went inside three more coffins and then four gold-covered boxes.

Another highlight was an evening out with a BBC colleague after a match. We went to a fresh-fish restaurant overlooking the harbour and then for a long walk along the seafront.

Even at 130am children were swimming in the sea, and cafes were full. My two colleagues and I opted to go across the sands on camels, and it didn’t disappoint.

In the UK, Prince Harry and his wife had a private christening for 3-month old baby Archie (full name: Archie Harrison MountbattenWindsor).His name roughly translates to “the brave son of Harry”. I like it. Family and close friends attended the private ceremony held in the chapel at Windsor Castle.

Life for Zimbabweans is moving faster than the RTGS$ rate did back in early June. However, for those who have a few minutes to spare while queuing for fuel, here is what you might have missed: First of all, congratulations on surviving winter!

No more fighting with your sleeves when they become stuck in your jacket. Note to self for next year: You can either wear a onesie or you can drink tea at night. Doing both at the same time will lead to awkward 2am bathroom visits that no one enjoys.

August heralds the beginning of the holidays.

Not sure if this is still popular, but my parents used to set up a whole bunch of play dates with friends and family during the school holidays. They jokingly called it group rearing! Anyway, for all the parents with kids in school remember, it’s all fun and games until it’s the night before school starts and the holiday project is not complete.

So save yourself the headache and get all the details early. You’ll thank me on the 10th of September when school goes back.

The Royal Family And in tennis, make sure to keep your eye out for tennis rising star Coco Gauff. The fifteen year old beat Venus Williams in the first round of Wimbledon this year – in straight sets no less.

Cheeky teenager! Even though she later lost to 2019 Champion Simona Halep, the former junior number 1 is set to take the tennis world by storm.

Braai The Zim dollar made its return. After the craziness of the first six months of 2019, this has been a much needed (if not always) welcome change. I for one have been examining prices closer, now that the practice of unexplained hikes has been exposed. The difference in prices for the same or similar items has at times been absolutely rage-inducing. At some point, the power of us as consumers will have to kick in.
