bill to allow green card holders and nonresident aliens to vote El Consejo de la Ciudad de Nueva York presentó un nuevo proyecto de ley que permitiría a los titulares de la tarjeta verde y los extranjeros no residentes con una visa de trabajo votar en las elecciones municipales. Para poder votar, una persona debe ser residente de la ciudad de Nueva York durante al menos 30 días antes de votar. Actualmente, aproximadamente 1 millón de residentes de la ciudad de Nueva York no pueden votar en las elecciones locales debido a su estado migratorio, a pesar de pagar impuestos a la ciudad.
The New York City Council introduced a new bill that would allow green card holders and nonresident aliens with a work visa to vote in municipal elections. In order to be able to vote, an individcual must be a resident of New York City for at least 30 days before voting. Currently, about 1 million New York City residents are unable to vote in local elections due to their immigration status, despite paying taxes to the city.
El proyecto de ley fue presentado por el concejal de la ciudad, Ydanis Rodríguez, quien llegó por primera vez a los Estados Unidos con una tarjeta verde en 1983. ''Puedo decirles lo que no es estadounidense: negar a las personas que pagan sus impuestos el derecho de elegir representantes que expresen sus preocupaciones y representantes que determinarán dónde se asigna su dinero. No es estadounidense dejarlos fuera de ese proceso.
Hoy en 2020, aquí en una de las ciudades más progresistas del país, tomaremos nuestro lugar en la historia para permitir que los titulares de tarjetas de residencia y permisos de trabajo participen en nuestras elecciones municipales. Nuestras comunidades de inmigración, muchas de las cuales han estado viviendo aquí durante décadas, finalmente serán empoderadas y dotadas de derechos para votar''. Si se promulga, lo más pronto que la ley entraría en vigencia es para las elecciones de 2021 en toda la ciudad.
The bill was introduced by city Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez, who first came to the United States with a green card in 1983. ''I can tell you what is un-American—denying people who pay their taxes the right to choose representatives that will voice their concerns and representatives that will determine where their money is allocated. It is un-American to leave them out of the that process. Today in 2020, here in one of the most progressive cities in the country, we will take our place in history to allow green card and worker permits holders to participate in our municipal elections. Our immigration communities, many of which have been living here for decades, will finally be empowered and enfranchised.'' If enacted, the earliest the bill would be effective is for the 2021 citywide elections.
