JOHN BISHOP, NEW CEO KNOWS RURAL HEALTHCARE

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO: Having grown up in Montana, I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve the residents of the Bitterroot Valley. It’s an honor to take the helm as the new Chief Executive Officer of Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital. Over the past three decades, John Bartos has served this community well, building an exceptional team of caregivers and a comprehensive breadth of services.

Early on in my career I chose the healthcare field. This decision was based on experiencing the complexities of the healthcare industry following the birth of our premature son. Inevitably, we learned that while healthcare can be challenging, it also has many rewards. For our family it has been a system that has given us the gift of a healthy 8-year-old son, as well as two other children.

Once I ventured down the path of healthcare administration, I was fortunate enough to begin my career as the Chief Financial Officer and later as the Chief Executive Officer of Madison Valley Medical Center in Ennis, Montana. Several years later we moved our family to Central Oregon where I served in the St. Charles Health System as the President of the Prineville and Madras Hospitals.

Since arriving here, I’ve come to see how unique Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital is and the value it provides to this community.

In the weeks, months and even years ahead, one of my long-term goals will be to listen - listen to the staff and providers, listen to the needs of the community, listen to the concerned caregivers, and most importantly listen to the patients cared for within our facilities. Our family’s personal experiences and my introduction to healthcare have led me to focus on a few key areas: the individual patient experience, cost effective delivery of care, and integrating our services and organization into the Bitterroot Valley communities.

We are excited to call the Bitterroot home, to raise our family in a rural community, and to provide them with the opportunities that our community will bring. The future of Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital is bright and it’s because of the trust you’ve given us to serve you.

FOUNDATION

Daly Hospital Foundation is committed to help purchase new patient monitors and telemetry units throughout the hospital.

Phase 1 of our campaign began last November with an end-of-year request and online giving campaign. In less than two months, we gathered $70,793 and appreciate all our generous donors and supporters. Phase 2 is in full swing and donations are gratefully accepted.

ur campaign will culminate with a signature fundraising event on July 21, 2018, with an end goal of $400,000. Our active board is working tirelessly to make it a multi-faceted success with an afternoon Collector’s Art Show followed by an unforgettable evening dinner and concert on the grounds of the Daly Mansion. We thank all our board members, sponsors and volunteers for their preparatory work.

We also thank our generous MDMH employee donors who participate in payroll-deducted donations. The number of employees involved has

tripled over the last year and together they have purchased a new bilimeter and photo light for the Birthing Center, a temporary pacemaker for the Emergency Department and half the cost of a fridge/ freezer for the MDMH Lab that will improve efficiency and allow new services to be provided. In November, employee donors will again vote on where their hard-earned gifts will improve patient care.

Building a Healthier Community Jobs People Do Corvallis Primary School kindergartners visited the hospital to experience the different jobs that people do. Their first stop was to the Pediatric Rehabilitation Center where they were able to participate in an obstacle course and activities the physical therapists use to help children regain their strength and endurance.

Next was a tour of an ambulance and a glimpse of the life of our EMTs and Paramedics.

The Kindergartners last stop was at Dr. Dolecki’s office, Bitterroot Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, where they learned all about broken bones and casts.

The kids were able to hold bone models, look at X-rays of broken bones and watched as Dr. Dolecki applied and removed a cast from a skeleton’s arm. Kiana, one of the students, said “I liked the part where he used the big saw to take the cast off of the skeleton’s arm, it was so awesome!”

Corvallis School Nurse Grant This year Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital provided each of the Ravalli County School Districts with a school nurse grant.

“Your donation allows us to provide the daily medical services to our students with a knowledgeable, fulltime nurse. The partnership with the hospital has been a wonderful asset to our school for years,” said Tim Johnson, Superintendent.

Hamilton School District offered a health fair to its faculty and Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital was happy to help!

The hospital hosted many interactive stations. The faculty was engaged and excited to meet the team and learn about sleep, breast and overall health. They tested their balance, found out if they were sleep deprived and had a vision check. They were intrigued by the number and variety of primary care providers and how easy it is to access health care and preventative health screenings at your local hospital. Kari Goligoski, paraprofessional at Daly Elementary, shared “This is really great! It’s a wonderful thing that Marcus Daly is doing to make people aware of the services they provide and create opportunities to meet the team!”

NEW PROVIDERS

Welcome New Healthcare Providers!

Rocky Mountain Neurosurgery Center Dr. Richard Day and Jennine Brogan, FNP welcome Nicholas Hensley, PA-C, MPAS to their team. Nicholas has two years of experience in neurosurgery which includes seeing patients in clinic, assisting in surgery, managing patients in the perioperative period and taking trauma call. “I am honored to work with Dr. Day and Jennine Brogan. We offer a teambased approach to facilitate the best care for our patients,” said Nicholas. “I am trained in practicing evidence-based medicine and enjoy spending time getting to know my patients. By understanding my patient’s needs and desired outcomes, together we can formulate the most appropriate cost effective individualized treatment plan.” Nicholas and his wife Kelly are native Montanans and enjoy an active lifestyle of fly-fishing, hiking, hunting and skiing. They have a love for the mountains and are glad to call Montana home again!

Nocturnist Carson King, MSN, RN, APRN, is a native Montanan and accomplished medical provider. During his career he has practiced as a cardiac and critical care nurse, a hospitalist and a pulmonary critical care nurse practitioner. “I have been working in nursing for the past 10 years in a lot of different settings from bush hospitals in Africa to large academic medical centers. I am passionate about taking care of acutely ill patients. I graduated with my MSN in 2015 and have recently moved from Tennessee where I had been working in critical care for the past 2 years. I was born and raised in Montana and in my free time I love being outside hiking, running, and also being with my family.”

Convenient Care Sharon Colchin, FNP-BC; started her medical career as a Registered Nurse working in the Bitterroot Valley in 1995 and it wasn’t long before she made her way to Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital working in the Home Health and Hospice departments as a visiting nurse, in a supervisory role, and in community outreach. In 2009, she returned to Montana State University to pursue an advanced degree as a nurse practitioner. “I have spent the last 6 years in family practice and urgent care in Missoula. I am excited to have returned to MDMH to work as a float to cover for all the clinics. It feels like coming home to my family. I’m proud to be part of the MDMH family again, and to serve the people of the Bitterroot Valley.”

Nocturnist Sarina Wilson, MSN, AGACNP, is a graduate of Vanderbilt University. She began her career as an intensive care nurse in Missoula, and eventually transitioned to an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner hospitalist about 5 years ago.

As a hospitalist, she has only worked in rural care areas. “I love working in rural healthcare.

I get to spend so much more time with my patients, evaluating them holistically and treating more than just the one isolated issue in front of me. I get to take the time to evaluate their health concerns in the setting of who they are and within the context of their lives. The busier pace in larger hospitals would never give me the time to do this. I am passionate about my work. It allows me to engage in three of my favorite activities: listen to stories, teach and solve medical puzzles. What more could I ask for?”

Hospital Nocturnists are Nurse Practitioners on the Hospitalist team. They are night shift medical providers who specialize in medical care for patients who are admitted into the hospital.
