Progress on the ICU Capital Campaign Greetings to all of you. You may recall that I completed my maximum term of nine years on the MDMH Board of Directors in October of 2012. My wife, Judy, and I have been serving as Chairpersons of the fundraising campaign to build the new ICU. Ron Kullick’s message in this issue contains an update for how that campaign is coming along.

We all feel pretty positive about where we are with the funds raised but I want to focus on how far we have to go, and the importance of our hospital to everyone in this valley.

The new term for economic success with small hospitals is “affiliation.” There are economic impacts of the Affordable Care Act on small hospitals all over the country, and many may be forced to affiliate with larger hospitals. This is exacerbated by the decision of our State Legislature to not accept federally funded Medicaid expansion, which leaves many Ravalli County residents without health insurance. Our hospital, MDMH, is staffed with over 500 caring and committed people and we all want to remain a locally managed and vibrant healthcare organization. Our hospital is extremely valuable to our valley and its two most important contributions are nationally recognized quality healthcare that is accessible to everyone, and the financial role we play in the area. The hospital’s payroll adds almost 25 million dollars annually to the valley on top of the significant local purchases and recent construction.

We want to provide Quality Accessible Healthcare and remain financially solvent, and to do that we need your help.

The ICU Capital Campaign has raised nearly 50% of the $3.2M total needed. This is a huge accomplishment but we still need gifts in the amount of the remaining balance. This is the first time we have asked for help and Judy and I hope you will contribute; every dollar counts!

Judy and Floyd Bethke Judy was the lucky Spring Fair raffle winner of the electronic blood pressure monitor. Floyd, her husband, shared “I like to keep track of my blood pressure every day and my doctor can pull the history directly off of the monitor.” Floyd had Gallbladder surgery and both commented, “Dr. Ilgenfritz is so nice and explains everything very thoroughly.” “The surgery went so well, Floyd was home having dinner that night.“ Floyd added, “Dr. Luke Channer saved me from colon cancer. He is one of my favorite doctors and has the best nurse!” Both shared, “With Marcus Daly being so close we do not have to worry about going great distances for good care, and we are lucky our hospital is here.”

Laboratory Services Most laboratory services are available and processed on-site at the Marcus Daly Laboratory. The services range from blood bank and chemistry to surgical specimens. Below is a list of most of the specimens collected at your local hospital’s laboratory:

Blood Bank (Immunohematology): The blood type, antibody screen and cross match results are used to determine what blood products are safe to administer.

Chemistry: Includes Lipid, PSA, TSH, Vitamin D, and Cardiac Markers.

The Marcus Daly Laboratory is a full-service department open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, servicing hospital departments, medical clinics and many local businesses. Walk-in patients are welcome during the hours of 7:30am to 5pm from Monday through Friday and 8am to 2pm on weekends and holidays. The department is inspected annually to verify compliance with the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA).

This assures our patients, the community and our partners that the Marcus Daly Laboratory is monitored for accuracy and competency, and consistently maintains a high level of compliance.

Serology Screenings

Monitors patients taking Warfarin / Coumadin with PT/ INR, PTT for heparin therapy monitoring, and Fibrinogen.

DDimer is a test to determine if a patient may have deep vein thrombosis or blood clots in the lungs.

If you have not driven by the main entrance to Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital recently, you may not be aware that, with the onset of friendlier weather, the vision and years of planning for the most recent and much needed enhancement to patient care for our community, the new 3,200 square foot Intensive Care Unit, is happening!

Anticipation and excitement from the hospital family, volunteers, patients and visitors is apparent as they view the vision of a private, spacious, quiet, and comfortable critical care facility becoming a reality.

There is a buzz in the halls of the hospital from the

staff who are anxious for this amazing addition for patient care to be completed, which is targeted for dedication this fall. “Watching the ICU progress from paper plans to physical form is very exciting. I am so pleased for our patients and their families that we will have this wonderful facility for their critical care needs.

hen you need “Inpatient Services,” you can take comfort in knowing that Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital provides the high quality, personalized healthcare service you deserve and expect, all while keeping you close to home!

Inpatient services at MDMH include the MedicalSurgical Unit, Intensive Care Unit, Swing Bed, and the Birthing Suite. Our patients experience around-the-clock care by a team of competent medical professionals. This team includes a hospitalist who coordinates the plan of care with you and departments such as nursing, case management, social services, dietary, and rehabilitation.

Everyone’s goal is to keep you and your family informed about your care, your progress, and your discharge plans.

Last fiscal year patients spent a total of 5,298 days in the inpatient wards, 874 days in Swing Bed, 458 days in the Intensive Care Unit, plus 145 new babies were delivered at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital.

Becci Conroy – Hospital Leadership Award Recipient Becci Conroy, Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital’s Health Information Management Department Head, has worked at MDMH for over 15 years. She is a Darby native, was born at MDMH and left the area for education and to begin her career. Becci navigated back to the Bitterroot Valley to raise her son and contribute to the area she has learned to really appreciate. During a recent employee celebration, Hospital Board Chairman Don Lodmell presented Becci with the

2013 Hospital Leadership Award. Becci is a life-long learner and was elected by her peers for her knowledge, fairness and innovated leadership skills, as well as her willingness to help others and commitment to MDMH’s overall success. “I am honored and humbled to have been selected for this award by my peers,” shared Becci. “Every day I get to do what I love for a living with the best folks in the world – truly blessed!”

Corvallis Kindergarteners learn from Rehabilitation Staff The doors opened and 21 Corvallis kindergarteners marched through the doors of the Marcus Daly Rehabilitation Center.

The interactive learning obstacle course was set up by Pete Dunn, Department Head. He recruited his assistants, the students’ teacher and accompanying chaperones to get this project underway. The children began going from station to station, and the questions and laughter filled the area as they learned about arm and grip strength, scooter control and the 12 | MDMH.ORG

During the same visit the students had an opportunity to pile into the ambulance and learn about the equipment needed to safely transport a patient to the hospital. “It is amazing how this tour was geared for the kindergarteners, and was really educational and fun!” said Jessica Lendak, mother of Waylan, one of the students. “Thank you for doing this and I look forward to having my four year old experience this next year!”

Boy Scouts Tour Hospital to Earn a Patch

“The hospital is really big with lots of really nice people to take care of you,” said Corbin Kirkland, a first year Cub Scout who participated on a field trip with hospital staff. The boys visited the adult and pediatric areas in the Rehabilitation Center, and saw how the aquatic center’s HydroWorx Therapy Pool benefits patients with leg injuries.

Then the Boy Scouts were off to see the ambulance with the hospital’s Emergency Medical Technicians.

When touring the ambulance a couple of the boys experienced wearing a neck brace to demonstrate preparation for safe emergency transportation. “This field trip was a part of a segment of visits to achieve a Boy Scout patch,” shared Kathy, the troop leader. “It is so terrific that the hospital welcomes our boys, and the hospital staff is so personable and really great with them. It was fun and obviously the boys loved it!"

Thank You for Visiting Us at Spring Fair Spring Fair this year was complemented by a beautiful day of sunshine after a long winter of snow! Many enjoyed learning about current hospital happenings and services presented by medical experts at the Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital booth. Over 55 people checked their blood pressure health, and others participated in the Osteoporosis survey to see if they were at risk of developing bone loss.

Patients had the opportunity to register for MyHealth, a

patient portal that gives easy access to clinical record summaries and the ability to request a prescription or medical appointment. The Daly Hospital Foundation updated everyone on how well the funding and building for the new ICU was coming along.

Our “Pink Ladies” quizzed our visitors before entering the raffle for a free electronic blood pressure monitor. Our lucky winner was Judy Bethke! Thank you all for visiting us at the MDMH booth!

Volunteers Honored by Hospital V

olunteering is an important role at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital and throughout our community! Between the Marcus Daly Auxiliary and the Hospice Volunteers there are over 100 residents who collectively in one year gave over 14,000 hours to the hospital, and many more to other organizations in the community. These dedicated volunteers contribute time and talent to hospital departments, assist family members and guests in finding their way around the facility, and raise funds to support much needed equipment and programs.

“I am proud to be a hospice volunteer and love my pink lady time at this hospital. I have been in a lot of states and many hospitals.

Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital is a special place. The staff is always smiling!” said Jackie Johnson. “I love this hospital; the people fill a huge void in my life. The volunteers are amazing and my work is rewarding. I help at the information desk by doing little projects and assisting guests in finding their way, and what I like the best is being in the middle of the comings and goings.”

In April, hospital team members hosted an annual themed Volunteer Luncheon to honor the hospital and hospice volunteers. This year’s theme was “Wild West”; the staff dressed in jeans and bandanas and the décor was like stepping back in time, with playing cards and old western antiques.

The volunteers took the theme seriously and dressed in fringes, boots and hats. Troy Hanson, Assistant Administrator, took this opportunity to share how fortunate we are to have such a dedicated group of volunteers to assist us in delivering quality and personalized care. As a variety of delicious looking desserts were being passed, the room was full of chatter. The event concluded with a “bang” when Carol DeMann, one of three volunteer winners of the Bingo Carol DeMann games, shouted BINGO! Gather for tea, coffee, rolls, fruit with other women who have experienced grief or loss. For information call, 363.6503.

This is a fun class for kids ages 11-13 to prepare themselves for babysitting. Learn safe and nurturing child care techniques, behavior management skills and appropriate responses to medical emergencies.

Participants will also develop skills in leadership and professionalism, first aid, and safety and safe play. They will also get the knowledge, skills and confidence to care for infants and school-age children. The cost of Babysitter Boot Camp is $40.

Basic Life Support class is designed for healthcare providers who respond to cardiovascular and respiratory emergencies. The class teaches skills needed for adult, child and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation, how to treat cardiac arrest with an automated external defibrillator (AED), the recognition and treatment of choking, and the safety factors in training and actual rescue. Cost $45.

Congestive Heart Failure-Part 2 Tuesday, June 17, 2014 5:30pm to 6:45pm MDMH Conference Rooms B/ C

This class aims to provide attendees with a brief overview of the first class and a thorough understanding of the topics requested in the participants’ surveys.

These topics are: heart medications and prescriptions, including the use of statins, clarification of ace inhibitors and beta blockers, as well as information on mitral valve issues, pros and cons of pacemakers, high blood pressure, cholesterol and more. Heartsaver First Aid with CPR and AED June 23 & 24, 2014 August 4 & 5, 2014 6:00pm to 10:00pm MDMH Conference Rooms B/C

Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital offers the HeartSaver First Aid Course. The class is designed to teach you how to manage illnesses and injuries in the first few minutes until professional help arrives. Course content includes General Principles, Medical Emergencies and Injury Emergencies. The modules are: Adult First Aid, Environmental Emergencies, Adult/Child CPR with Mask, Adult/Child AED, and Infant CPR with Mask. This class is for those who have a duty to respond to a first aid or cardiac emergency. Class $45.

Childbirth Classes July 7, 14, 21 & 28, 2014 Monday evenings, 7:00pm to 9:00pm MDMH Conference Room C

Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital and its Medical Staff offer Childbirth Classes. They are a 4-week series held on Mondays from 7pm to 9pm. The classes provide information based in part on the Lamaze method of prepared childbirth.

The series includes the entire childbirth process, emphasizing breathing and relaxation techniques, lactation information, pre and post-delivery expectations and a tour of the Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital Birthing Suites. The expecting parents have an opportunity to meet the medical staff and delivery team and learn what makes an optimum birth experience. Cost is $65.

Advanced EMT Class September 2014

The AEMT course will prepare you to assess and treat patients with an increased scope of practice and skill set.

The scope of practice includes all of the EMT practices and adds advanced care by utilizing specialized training such as intravenous access, administration of emergency care medications, and provides advanced airway procedures for patients requiring additional treatment as a part of their care.
