Providing for our patients and our community Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital is truly a special place in a special community. During the five years I have been a member of the Medical Staff, a Hospitalist Director, and a Medical Staff Officer, there has been a resounding theme - what our patients and community need, we provide. In recent years we have upgraded multiple areas of the hospital: a new Emergency Department, a new Physical Therapy wing, a unique and beautiful Hospice Unit (one of only two of its kind in the state of Montana), an updated and integrated outpatient clinic, new Birthing Unit, and a state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit.

We have added multiple new medical and surgical services, including the Hospitalist program and Neurosurgery. Case managers and a multidisciplinary team of providers are now involved in the discharge process of each inpatient to ensure smooth transition to the outpatient setting. I am pleased to welcome our newest medical staff members Dr. Michael Dolecki of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Eugenie Haight of Internal Medicine and Hospitalist Medicine, and Dr. Anthony Navone of Cardiology who will all continue to broaden the services offered.

Since my arrival here in Hamilton five years ago, I have been equally impressed with our patients. We care for people who are hard-working, kind and appreciative of good care. We care for visitors to our valley, neighbors and family members, and each other. This is truly the integration of care into a community at its finest. I am proud to be a part of the Marcus Daly team as we dedicate ourselves to providing excellent, personalized care to the patients of the Bitterroot Valley.

2014 Community Benefit Report

M

arcus Daly Memorial Hospital’s mission is to provide quality, accessible, personalized healthcare. As a not-for-profit hospital we have an obligation to track and report on the community benefit investment in each community we serve.

Community benefits are programs, services, and activities that provide treatment, promote health and are a response to identified community needs. These

July 1, 2013 – June 30, 2014

programs improve access to services, enhance the health of the community, increase health knowledge, and reduce the financial burden.

During this community benefit year, Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital introduced a community health fair and blood pressure screening clinics, increased the number of case managers and hospitalists, and continues to subsidize services. The hospital experienced an increase in patient financial assistance and matched the community donations to the Aid for Mammography Fund. In addition, the hospital increased access to the Aid for Mammography Fund from 100% to 200% of the National Poverty Guidelines and included additional related services.

Some of the Many Community Benefit Programs* Free or discounted care for patients Corvallis Kindergarten Tour Seventeen Corvallis kindergartners enjoyed a tour of their local hospital, which included playing in the rehabilitation center, exploring the inside of the ambulance and learning about nutrition through reading and eating a healthy snack. “This is the best day of my whole life,” said one student riding on a bucking swing while in the Rehabilitation Center. Students were excited to get into the ambulance and see all of the equipment, which is a fun way to introduce them to emergency medical care without fear. One of the chaperones said, “I think it is great exposure to the hospital and lets them be less afraid.”

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE INCREASES Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital’s Patient Financial Assistance Program helps patients who are uninsured or underinsured or have a low income and have difficulty paying their hospital bills.

The guidelines are 100% to 200% of the national poverty level. This fiscal year, 297 patients qualified

Emergency Medical Services

Ambulance Report Card T

he EMS Department at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital remains committed to providing ambulance coverage to the visitors and citizens of the Bitterroot Valley. Our EMS Department provides services which include responding to emergencies when dispatched, transferring patients requiring a higher level of service, and committing resources to EMS training and refreshers. We also have paramedics with a Critical Care Endorsement.

This additional training provides paramedics with the ability to provide transfers of higher acuity and more complex patient presentations.

We started a paramedic course in May and continue to facilitate life support courses including Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Basic Life Support. In addition to these commitments, we also provide community presentations and coverage

for event standbys. Our EMTs and Paramedics continuously train and prepare to provide quality, accessible, personalized healthcare consistent with the mission of Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital. Our staff, when assigned to Hamilton, assists in the emergency department when not on an ambulance call.

In fiscal year 2014, the call volume rose to 3,699 assignments. Working with Dr. Brian Kelleher, EMS Medical Director, the EMS Department continues to utilize best practices when providing patient care.

Operationally, the staff dynamically redeploys to Emergency Medical Service provide prompt, appropriate, and efficient ambulance Ambulance Runs in F.Y. 2014 coverage to the county.

When asked to be on a committee to help promote awareness of the new birthing center, I felt it to be a worthy project. I had the opportunity to tour the newly updated facility, and I was ever so impressed.

The International Heart Institute of Montana and Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital welcome Dr. Anthony Navone to the Bitterroot Valley. Dr. Navone is a non-invasive cardiologist, Diplomat in Cardiovascular Disease and a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

He has been a physician for over 25 years, with 18 years of practicing in a high intensity cardiovascular health care system in Syracuse, New York.

Dr. Navone has been hunting and fishing in Montana for years and

is looking forward to transitioning his career from treating acutely ill patients to building patient relationships and focusing on prevention and heart health. “I chose the field of medicine for the patient experience and to help people be healthier.

I am honored to be on the International Heart Institute team and am looking forward to working in the newly expanded Marcus Daly Cardiac Services Department. This is a dream job for me!” said Dr. Navone. “During my interview, I was impressed by the quality of the

Eugenie T. Haight, MD, MPH, recently joined the Marcus Daly Medical Staff and is practicing at the Bitterroot Physicians Clinic.

She is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of California San Francisco, Fresno-San Joaquin Valley Medical Education Program. Over the past 28 years of practicing internal medicine in metropolitan and rural areas, Dr. Haight grew to love small town medicine in both the outpatient and inpatient settings.

“My area of special interest is infectious diseases and I get satisfaction in managing chronic illnesses, like diabetes and hypertension,” said Dr. Haight. “My delivery of care is thorough but conservative and I expect my patients to take a role in their health. I strive to minimize medications by using lifestyle changes for treatment. This prevents drug interactions and is safer for my patients.”

For the past couple of years, Dr. Haight had been seeking the right place to build a practice. “I believe I have found it,” said Dr. Haight. “I am looking

forward to building a practice, getting to know my patients, and working with them to manage their health. I am also excited about periodically working as a hospitalist.”

In addition to being passionate about caring for patients, Dr. Haight loves the outdoors and is looking forward to hiking, growing a garden, and getting out her snowshoes when the snow falls.

Consider implementing a preemployment functional capacity evaluation program. This will determine if the potential new hire is fit for the job requirements, and identify potential risk for injury.

Data has shown that by increasing the awareness and importance of safety in the workplace, employees are more careful and take precaution when preforming highrisk tasks. Offering mini clinics on proper lifting techniques, testing and consulting on strength, flexibility and stability, and ergonomic computer work station reviews are ways to enhance the awareness of workplace safety and engage your workforce.

According to Dan Gengler, the Montana State Fund’s Internal Actuary, “The state of Montana has the highest workers' compensation rates in the nation. The permanent-partial disability claims are 50% higher in Montana than the national average.�

An employee with a permanentpartial disability (PPD) is someone with a workplace injury that permanently restricts their ability to perform the job at full capacity. The most common permanent-partial disability is a back injury, followed by carpal tunnel.

Implementing a workplace safety program can identify and eliminate workplace hazards that may cause accidents. These employer safety programs are available at the workplace or at the Marcus Daly Rehabilitation Center. We are a certified Work Well provider offering the highest level of employer safety programs and testing.

The Marcus Daly Rehabilitation Work Well programs can help reduce the risk of employee injury by determining, through a series of tests, if the employee is in the condition to safely perform the job duties or if the workstation is set up properly.

The GE SenoClaire breast tomosynthesis system is designed to detect cancers that are harder to find in denser breast tissue,” shared Dr. Lance Pysher, Radiologist.

“The images are clearer and the dose of radiation is the same. This combination enhances outcomes and patient safety.”

In addition, we now offer stereotactic biopsies that are performed when a mammogram shows a breast abnormality.

Using similar 3D technology, this can be done in the private mammography suite in less than an hour.

“Our new GE SenoClaire breast tomosynthesis system brings a complete breast care package to the Bitterroot Valley. This equipment has a wider plate size to accommodate larger breast views. The

new 3D digital breast tomography takes slice-like pictures of the breast, allowing the radiologist to identify concerns with more accuracy than ever before and fewer return visits. Stereotactic biopsy was something that Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital (MDMH) had never offered, forcing us to send patients to other facilities. Offering stereotactic biopsies at MDMH allows for the patient to stay close to home for all their breast care. We are excited to offer these new additions to our line-up and are blessed to have all this technology in a rural area.” said Drew Hayward, Imaging Department Head.

Erin Clinton, RN Wins Award

Erin Clinton, a registered nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital, was surprised when she received the first inaugural excellence award from her colleagues during an appreciation celebration for National Nursing Week.

Coworkers shared some of the qualities that made her shine.

For example, “She always has a positive attitude and does not judge, skills are superb, always on top of planning patient care and adapting to what she is given, and she shows the skills for mentoring and teaching to others.” Erin’s humble attitude is just another reason why she received the award. Erin responded, “Thank you so much, this was very unexpected. Look at my competition – this is crazy. Any one of these people should be up here beside me. You are all my team. I appreciate this.”

“The excellence award will be an annual tradition recognizing nurses with STAR quality that demonstrates exceptional nursing skills and exemplifies a team-like spirit!” shared Peggy McLaughlin, Nurse Manager.

Nursing Grants For Area Schools This year, Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital donated nearly $20,000 to schools in the Bitterroot Valley to assist with their nursing programs.

Schools are seeing more students with increased medical issues such as diabetes, allergies, and poverty related illnesses. Many students are missing vaccinations. Nurses play an essential part in helping identify and manage these problems and their medical expertise is invaluable.

Superintendents from each of the districts agreed that, “Without the nurse grants provided by Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital these services would be diminished.” We are a community driven hospital.

2015 Health Fair Success Health Fair provided 302 free cholesterol screenings to residents and 53 people attended the cholesterol class. Several residents toured the mammography suite to view the new mammogram technology and commented, “There is no reason to drive to Missoula for breast exams.

Marcus Daly has state-of-the-art technology right here.” Appreciation was shared throughout the day. Bromley Casabara said, “This was a good awareness of all that is offered at the hospital. I thought it was very comprehensive and well done!”

Creating Moments of Joy: Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia July 23, 2015 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm MDMH Conference Rooms Blodgett/ Canyon View

Marcus Daly Hospice is hosting a free video series for the public entitled “Creating Moments of Joy” by Jolene Brackley. The series focuses on care givers and family members that are caring for a patient or family member with Alzheimer's and Dementia. We will have a brief time for Q & A’s after the video. Refreshments will be provided.

Heartsaver First Aid with CPR and AED August 3 & 4, 2015 October 6 & 7, 2015 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm MDMH Conference Room B

Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital offers the Heartsaver First Aid Course. The class is designed to teach you how to manage illnesses and injuries in the first few minutes until professional help arrives. Course content includes general principles, medical emergencies and injury emergencies. The modules are: Adult First Aid, Environmental Emergencies, Adult/Child CPR with Mask, Adult/Child AED, and Infant CPR with Mask. This class is for those who have a duty to respond to a first aid or cardiac emergency. Class $45.

Sports Physicals August 6, 2015 August 12, 2015 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm Marcus Daly Rehabilitation Center

Marcus Daly Medical staff, with support from the hospital, is offering sports physicals to all valley athletes in middle and high school. Students with chronic problems should be seen by their primary care provider. Sports physical forms are available from doctors’ offices, coaches, or online at www.mdmh.org.

Parents must fill out and sign the sports physical form and accompany their child at the examination. The cost is $25 per student and 100% of the proceeds will be donated back to the student’s school athletic program. Cash or check only; no refunds.

Health Care Provider BLS Class July 15, 2015 September 9, 2015 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm MDMH Conference Room B

Basic Life Support class is designed for healthcare providers who respond to cardiovascular and respiratory emergencies. The class teaches skills needed for adult, child and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation, how to treat cardiac arrest with an automated external defibrillator (AED), the recognition and treatment of choking, and the safety factors in training and actual rescue. Cost $45.

Marcus Daly Hospice is hosting their annual fundraiser and raffle drawing to raise money to help with the expenses associated with patients and their quality of care.

Childbirth Classes October 5, 12, 19, & 26, 2015 Monday evenings, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm MDMH Conference Room C

Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital and its Medical Staff offer a 4-week Childbirth educational program. The series of classes is designed to prepare expecting parents for the birthing experience. The class content is based in part on the Lamaze method of prepared childbirth. The series includes the entire childbirth process, emphasizing breathing and relaxation techniques, lactation information, pre and post-delivery expectations and a tour of the new Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital Birthing Suites. The expecting parents have an opportunity to meet the medical staff and delivery team and learn what makes an optimum birth experience. Cost is $65.
