I just wanted to start by saying a huge thank you to all our staff, participants, and community members for everything you’ve done over the past month You all make BigDog such a great place to be, and I really appreciate everything you do. This month is a special one for me, as I’ve officially hit my one-year milestone with BigDog! It has been such a joy getting to know you all and working together to make a difference. I’m really excited to see what the next year will bring
Moving your body does not have to mean going to the gym. Just 10 minutes a day can make a big difference. Dance to your favourite song, stretch while watching TV, or take a quick stroll outside These small bursts of movement can boost your energy, lift your mood, and even help you sleep better. Mini Challenge: This month, try adding a little extra movement into your day Do 10 chair squats, take a walk to the letterbox, or have a quick stretch before bed. See how you feel by the end of the week!
Ask Us Anything!
Have a question about NDIS, supports, or BigDog? Send it through! We’ll share answers (and maybe even some fun ones) in next month’s newsletter
We have had some enquiries as to why comprehensive car insurance is needed. Here’s the simple explanation:
CTP (Compulsory Third Party) – included in your rego –only covers injuries to people if you cause an accident It does not cover cars, property, or your own vehicle
If you only have CTP and you crash, you personally pay for all damage. That could be tens of thousands of dollars, and could leave you without a car to do your shifts
Comprehensive insurance covers both your car and others, plus damage to property, theft, fire, and storm events
Most importantly, for our professional indemnity and liability insurance to apply to you while transporting participants, you must hold comprehensive car insurance Without it, you are not properly covered, and neither are we as an organisation And finally if you’re saying you can’t afford comprehensive insurance, it probably means you can’t afford NOT TO have it. One accident without cover is likely to cost you far more than a year’s premium

Tip: If you're ever unsure about whether something is appropriate (like accepting gifts or adding someone on social media), check with the service coordinator When in doubt, keep it professional and kind
It’s not always about the big wins Sometimes the smallest moments a shared laugh, a calm conversation, or showing up when someone’s having a tough day make the biggest difference
Reminder: You might not always see the impact you have, but your presence matters more than you know
Every behaviour communicates something When someone is upset or acting out, try asking yourself: What might they be trying to tell me?
Quick Tip: Stay calm, keep your body language open, and avoid escalating language. Take a step back (literally, if needed), give space, and always debrief with your team after.
Despite this month’s spooky feel with Halloween on the horizon, last month was filled with sunshine, spring flowers, and plenty of carnival fun! Our groups enjoyed some incredible community events and activities that brought colour, laughter, and excitement to the season.
October is shaping up to be packed with variety, growth, and fun! Our calendar is full of fitness sessions, skill development programs, social engagement opportunities, library education activities, exciting outings, and the much-anticipated return of swimming. Please remember to bring towels and swim gear so you’re ready to jump straight in!
The highlight of September was without a doubt the Disability Carnival Sideshow Alley Day at the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers
A huge thank you goes out to the community for organising such a welcoming and inclusive event Everyone had a fantastic time, especially on the dodgem cars, which quickly became the crowd favourite The smiles and laughter showed just how much joy this day brought.
Another standout activity was the Science Display at Cobb & Co Museum This hands-on exhibition gave participants the chance to explore science in a fun and interactive way From experimenting with light, sound, and motion to exploring new ideas through creative displays, the experience sparked plenty of curiosity.
Beyond the learning, the day was also about building social connections Working together, sharing discoveries, and discussing what they had learned gave everyone the chance to practice communication, teamwork, and confidence in group settings. The museum setting encouraged problemsolving and critical thinking, while also providing opportunities for peer support as participants helped each other interact with the displays.
With those big blue eyes and a smile that stretched from ear to ear, you brought light into every room. You will be deeply missed. This isn’t goodbye it’s just a ‘ see you later’, Mr Fisher.

September was full of energy, connection, and memorable moments here at Rocky Day Service!
Alongside our regular favourites weekly library visits, hands-on cooking classes, exciting rounds of 10-pin bowling, and our much-loved pub lunches we enjoyed some special outings that brought fun, learning, and plenty of smiles.
To wrap up a busy and exciting month, we headed to the movies to see Kangaroo It was the perfect way to relax, laugh together, and end Sept on a high note.
One of the biggest highlights was our adventure to the caves Exploring the winding underground paths gave everyone a chance to discover the natural beauty and history hidden beneath the surface. The trip was both educational and exciting, sparking lots of curious questions and great conversations along the way.
We also spent time at the Japanese Gardens, where the calm atmosphere and colourful surroundings made for a truly relaxing day out. This peaceful walk was a wonderful way to enjoy the fresh air, take in the scenery, and share quiet moments together—supporting both wellbeing and connection
Another standout was our beach day. With the sun shining and the waves rolling in, participants enjoyed a laid-back day by the water The group shared laughs, soaked up the sunshine, and tucked into some classic hot chips at the beach simple pleasures that created special memories

Please remember not to overstep your role as a support worker. Overstepping can lead to burnout, compassion fatigue, and unclear boundaries across the team. By maintaining professional boundaries, you support your client to build resilience and independence.
It’s important that you know your roles and responsibilities. If you are ever unsure, please reach out to the admin team at the office for clarification.
Questions about client plans or invoices should always be directed back to the office.
We have noticed an increase in shift notes lacking detail. Please be reminded that shift notes are extremely important because: They provide a clear record of what occurred during the shift
They form the basis for reports and documentation. They allow admin staff to advocate for and support you. They are a compliance requirement
Please ensure your shift notes are accurate, detailed, and completed promptly
Please see Reception’s article for more information on KMs
We have noticed an increase in incorrect KM claims. If you are unsure about how to claim kilometres, please contact the admin team for guidance
It is extremely important that you clock in and out at the time of your shift This should not be done weeks later
Accurate clocking: Confirms your attendance at the shift. Ensures payroll accuracy.
Supports compliance requirements
SPOTLIGHT
This October, we’re proud to share that our very own Exercise Physiologist, Shayla, will be presenting at the Cancer Council as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Shayla will be speaking about the role of exercise in breast cancer prevention, recovery, and survivorship, and how movement can be a powerful tool during and after treatment. Her presentation aims to educate, inspire, and support those affected by breast cancer – a cause close to many of our hearts.
Why Breast Cancer Awareness Matters
Every October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month reminds us of the importance of: Early detection – regular screenings can save lives. Education – understanding risk factors, symptoms, and how lifestyle choices can make a difference. Support – for those battling breast cancer and those who have survived it.
As a health club, we believe in whole-person wellness –physical, mental, and emotional. Breast cancer awareness isn’t just about one month; it’s about ongoing support, empowerment, and community.
How You Can Get Involved
✔ Wear pink this month to show support
✔ Donate to the Cancer Council or a breast cancer charity
✔ Talk to our team about ways to stay proactive with your health
✔ Share Shayla’s message and raise awareness within your own circle
Let’s continue to move forward together – for health, for strength, and for each other.

This applies especially for participants who have a budgeted number of kilometres, for example those who live out of town. All instructions in shift notes must be strictly adhered to.
If you have not yet signed the Personal Vehicle Agreement, please advise us of your intentions so we are aware of your plans.
All required documents must be sent to the correct contact:
