Fundada en la década del 50 del siglo XX, la Casa de la Trova Pepe Sánchez de Santiago de Cuba se ha convertido en el centro de la vida musical de una ciudad que se destaca por sus exponentes de la trova tradicional cubana. La calle Heredia alberga en esta pequeña vivienda la historia cultural no solo de una ciudad sino de un país, pues este centro es reconocido por sus festivales, conciertos y reuniones de grandes de la música de la isla.

El Festival Internacional de la Trova Pepe Sánchez

Cada año, el mes de marzo se llena de lo mejor de la trova cubana gracias al enigmático Festival Pepe Sánchez que se celebra en la Casa de la Trova santiaguera. El encuentro musical se realiza en honor al padre de la canción trovadoresca en la isla y autor del tema Tristeza, el primer bolero cubano. El cierre de este festival coincide con la fecha de su natalicio, el 19 de marzo, proclamada como Día del Trovador.

Founded in the 1950s, the Casa de la Trova Pepe Sánchez in Santiago de Cuba has become the centre of the musical life of a city renowned for its performers of traditional Cuban trova. Heredia Street treasures in this small residence the cultural history not only of a city but also of a nation, as this centre is recognised for its festivals, concerts and gatherings of the island's musical greats.

The Pepe Sánchez International Trova Music Festival

Every year, the month of March is packed with the best of Cuban trova thanks to the enigmatic Pepe Sánchez Festival held at the Casa de la Trova in Santiago de Cuba. This musical event is held in honour of the father of the trova song on the island and author of the first Cuban bolero, Tristeza. The closure of this festival coincides with the date of his birth, March 19th, proclaimed the Day of the Trovador.

Esta fiesta de la trova se sale del marco institucional e inunda la ciudad. Calles, escuelas y parques se convierten en el escenario elegido por los músicos de Cuba y el mundo que regalan sus canciones durante estos festejos. Conciertos, conferencias y homenajes forman parte de las actividades socioculturales de este evento que se ha ganado un lugar importante en la historia de la cancionística cubana a nivel internacional. En este 2021, la quincuagésima edición del festival se realizó de manera virtual y estuvo dedicada a Alejandro Almenares, el afamado trovador santiaguero. Considerado un pilar fundamental de la trova cubana, el músico recibió la Distinción por la Cultura Nacional y el Premio a la Excelencia que ofrece la Empresa de Grabaciones y Ediciones Musicales (EGREM).

Una parte esencial de la celebración anual del Pepe Sánchez es el recorrido por el Sendero de los Trovadores, en la necrópolis de Santa Ifigenia, en el que se homenajea a grandes de este género musical. Este año, el programa del festival fue transmitido, además, por el canal Clave, un elemento que contribuyó al gran éxito que tuvo incluso bajo las circunstancias de esta nueva realidad. En la clausura del festival se pudo conocer que el próximo año el evento estará dedicado a Eliades Ochoa, uno de los grandes de la reconocida agrupación Buena Vista Social Club y director del Cuarteto Patria. En la Casa de la Trova de Santiago de Cuba el amante de la música encontrará su sitio. En este espacio no solo se ofrecen conciertos a diario sino que es posible conocer sobre la historia y la vida cultural de la ciudad con solo sentarse y disfrutar de las fotografías que cubren las paredes de su sala de conciertos. Ubicada a pocos metros del céntrico Parque Céspedes, esta cuna de la trova cubana es punto de obligada visita para todos los que recorren la ciudad y se convierte en ese lugar al que siempre querrás regresar.

Not only does this space offer daily concerts, but it is possible to learn about the history and cultural life of the city simply by sitting back and admiring the photographs on the walls of its concert hall. Located just a few metres from the Parque Céspedes in the city centre, this cradle of Cuban trova is a must-see for anyone visiting the city and a place they will always want to return to. This trova festival goes beyond the institutional framework and floods the entire city. Streets, schools and parks become the stage of choice for musicians from Cuba and around the world who share their songs in these celebrations. Concerts, conferences and tributes are part of the socio-cultural activities of this event that has earned a prominent place in the history of Cuban song writing at an international level. In 2021, the 50th edition of the festival took place virtually and was dedicated to the memory of Alejandro Almenares, the renowned trovador from Santiago de Cuba. The musician, considered a fundamental pillar of Cuban trova, received the Distinction for the National Culture and the Award of Excellence offered by the Empresa de Grabaciones y Ediciones Musicales (EGREM). An essential part of this festival's annual celebrations is the Troubadours' Path, held at the necropolis of Santa Ifigenia, where tribute is paid to the great figures of this musical genre. This year, the festival´s programme was also broadcast on the Cuban TV channel Clave, which contributed to its great success even under the circumstances of this new reality. At the closing of the festival, it was announced that next year's event will be dedicated to Eliades Ochoa, one of the greats of the famous Buena Vista Social Club and the director of the Cuarteto Patria.
