La exposición personal «La espera», del joven artista de la plástica Alejandro Lescay, inaugurada el pasado 15 de enero, se mantendrá abierta al público todo este mes en la Galería Galiano del Fondo Cubano de Bienes Culturales, como parte del programa de la XIV Bienal de La Habana que sesiona hasta el próximo 24 de marzo. «Hijo de gato caza ratón» parece ser un refrán hecho a la medida del expositor, beneficiario y aventajado discípulo de su padre, Alberto Lescay Merencio, uno de los escultores más destacados del arte monumental contemporáneo cubano y caribeño, recientemente galardonado como Premio Nacional de las Artes Plásticas, cuyas obras componen el ámbito visual de muchas ciudades en Cuba, en especial, su Santiago de Cuba natal. Alejandro suma a su herencia los aprendizajes adquiridos en la Academia Profesional de Arte José Joaquín Tejada, de su oriental ciudad, y talento, pericia para el dibujo, perseverancia y energía. Ha conquistado una respetable nómina de reconocimientos y está situado en el circuito internacional del arte contemporáneo, muestra de lo cual son sus intervenciones en exhibiciones como «Identity & difference. Utopia Horizons. Contemporary Cuban Art In Venice», en el año 2019, y también en Alemania y Estados Unidos.

The personal exhibition La Espera (The Waiting), by young plastic artist Alejandro Lescay, inaugurated last January 15th, will remain open to the public all this month at the Galiano Gallery of the Cuban Fund for Cultural Goods, as part of the program of the 14th Havana Biennial, which will be held until March 24th. "Like father, like son", seems to be a saying tailor-made for the exhibitor, a benefactor and an advanced disciple of his father, Alberto Lescay Merencio, one of the most outstanding sculptors of Cuban and Caribbean contemporary monumental art, recently awarded the National Prize of Plastic Arts, whose works are part of the visual environment of many cities in Cuba, especially in his native Santiago de Cuba. Alejandro adds to his heritage, the knowledge acquired at the Professional Academy of Art Jose Joaquin Tejada as well as the talent, drawing skills, perseverance and energy. He has also won a respectable list of awards and is part of the international circuit of contemporary art, as evidenced by his interventions in exhibitions such as "Identity & difference. Utopia Horizons. Contemporary Cuban Art In Venice", in 2019, and also in Germany and the United States.

«La espera» fue concebida en el año 2019 como un proyecto curatorial conjunto del artista santiaguero con el prestigioso crítico de arte David Mateo y en ella el visitante hallará una interesante apuesta por nuevos códigos para la visualidad contemporánea cubana. Un primer conjunto de 28 retratos fueron presentados al certamen para creadores menores de 35 años, Post-it 7. Arte Cubano Contemporáneo 2020, espacio que se ha legitimado como plataforma de presentación para la producción de los más jóvenes artistas con lo cual hace un aporte sustancial al panorama de las artes visuales contemporáneas cubanas. La técnica utilizada por Lescay fue el scratchboard, que permite construir desde la oscuridad y dibujar en el proceso inverso al habitual, colocando luces en vez de sombras, e intentando hallar las imágenes, plenas de teatralidad, desde la oscuridad hacia la luz. La espera fue entonces seleccionada para la muestra final de este concurso, que se realizó en la modalidad virtual, por la crisis epidemiológica, y finalmente alcanzó el segundo puesto en la premiación, a partir de las siguientes consideraciones de un acreditado jurado: «Por la minuciosidad y el preciosismo técnico demostrado en sus “dibujos en negativo”, que constituyen una certera reflexión sobre el tiempo, muy a tono con las desafiantes circunstancias actuales». Sin embargo, la intención creativa inicial no estuvo relacionada con la crisis sanitaria, por lo que se podría pensar que «La espera» tiene un hálito premonitorio. Con la indiscutible credencial de presentación del lauro, Lescay, ya en medio de la pandemia, amplió el conjunto artístico, hasta alcanzar ciento cuarenta y dos piezas que son las que reciben hoy al visitante en la Galería Galiano y que le presentan una multiplicidad de tipos cubanos contemporáneos.

El conjunto pictórico es muy sugerente; habla de lo particular y lo colectivo. Son retratos individuales de prototipos sociales que a la vez conforman una pintura mayor, masiva. Aparecen sujetos cercanos al artista como familiares, colegas y amigos, así como individuos menos próximos: obreros, médicos, músicos, abogados, barrenderos, vendedores ambulantes, en su mayoría con una característica común al autor: jóvenes; idea recalcada, quizás por la relación con la expectación sobre el futuro, propia de la juventud. Todos los dibujados miran al cielo, directamente, o de manera esquiva, lo que refuerza no solo la expectativa del mañana sino otras lecturas como la esperanza, la fe, lo místico, en la diversidad de la relación humano-futuro-pretensiones. Luego, la expansión de la letal enfermedad, comenzó a gravitar sobre los dibujos de Lescay y se sumaron entonces otros simbolismos marcados por el miedo, la incertidumbre, el obligado distanciamiento social que reforzó la individualidad pero, a la par, se aprecia una intención optimista, afianzada, tal vez, en la fuerza del hombre y su fe. A propósito reflexiona el joven artista: «La espera es algo que todos compartimos, esperamos algo de la vida, de la muerte, del amor. Todos miramos al cielo y aunque no tengamos una creencia específica pedimos al universo y esperamos que las cosas ocurran».

La espera, was conceived in 2019 as a joint curatorial project of the Santiagoborn artist with the prestigious art critic David Mateo, and in it the visitor will find an interesting bet on new codes for contemporary Cuban visuality. The technique used by Lescay was the scratchboard, which allows him to build from the darkness, and draw in the reverse process to the usual, placing lights instead of shadows, and trying to build the images, full of theatricality, from darkness to light. La Espera was selected to participate in the final exhibition of this contest, which was held in the virtual modality, due to the epidemiological crisis, and finally reached the second place in the awards, based on the following considerations of an accredited jury: "For the thoroughness and technical preciosity demonstrated in his "drawings in negative", which constitute an accurate reflection of time, very much in tune with the current challenging circumstances".

However, the initial creative intention was not related to the health crisis, so it could be thought that La espera has a premonitory quality. With the undisputed credentials of the presentation of the award, Lescay, already in the middle of the pandemic, enlarged the artistic group, until reaching one hundred and forty-two pieces that are the ones that receive the visitor today in the Galiano Gallery and that present a multiplicity of contemporary Cuban types. The pictorial group is very suggestive; it speaks of the individual and the collective; they are individual portraits of social prototypes that at the same time make up a larger, massive painting; topics close to the artist such as relatives, colleagues and friends appear, as well as less close individuals: workers, doctors, musicians, lawyers, street sweepers, street vendors, most of them with a common characteristic to the author: young people; an idea emphasized, perhaps because of the relationship with the expectation about the future, typical of youth. All the drawings look at the sky, directly or elusively, which reinforces not only the expectation of the tomorrow but also other interpretations such as hope, faith, mysticism, in the diversity of the humanfuture-pretensions relationship. Then, the expansion of the lethal disease began to gravitate on Lescay's drawings, and other symbolisms were added, marked by fear, uncertainty, the forced social distancing that reinforced individuality, but, at the same time, an optimistic intention can be appreciated, strengthened, perhaps, in the strength of man and his faith. In this regard, the young artist reflects: "La Espera is something we all share, we expect something from life, from death, from love. We all look at the sky and even if we do not have a specific belief, we ask the universe and hope that things happen".
