El asombroso valor paisajístico de este río aumenta gracias al cañón que lo bordea por ambas orillas y que, con una altura de 200 metros, está repleto de plantas típicas del área, entre ellas, más de cien diferentes tipos de helechos, el júcaro, el jagüey y la cubanísima palma.
Exploring the magical waters of the Yumurí River, a unique experience in Cuba
Visitors to Cuba are attracted by its culture, its colonial cities and the beautiful beaches that characterize the island. In the eastern province of Guantánamo, visitors will find one of the most beautiful natural areas on the island. The amazing scenic value of this river is enhanced by the up to 200 meters high canyon that borders it on both banks and is filled with typical plants of the area, such as more than a hundred different types of ferns, black olive trees, the short-leaf figs and the very Cuban royal palm.

Alrededor del río Yumurí viven más de 60 especies de aves endémicas, 8 tipos de anfibios y 4 diferentes polímitas prueba de que esta zona es una de las áreas con mayor biodiversidad de toda Cuba. El río es navegable durante 250 metros en los que se convierte en el destino preferido de los visitantes internacionales. El alquiler de embarcaciones es muy popular aquí y permite que los turistas disfruten del río, rodeados por los enormes paredones del cañón. Luego de un sorprendente paseo en bote, el aventurero puede continuar a pie por la ladera del río en el que las familias locales acostumbran a realizar picnics. Durante esta experiencia de senderismo será posible ver el árbol del cacao, algunos ejemplares de cítricos y hasta al tocororo, el ave nacional. El final perfecto de esta aventura lo encontramos en la desembocadura del río, en la playa Yumurí. Bañada por las aguas del Atlántico, este es el sitio perfecto para descansar y recargar energías luego de un día agitado. A la sombra de un cocotero, disfrutando de una excelente comida criolla y con un trago típico cubano los problemas no tienen cabida. Cuenta la leyenda que estas eran tierras aborígenes y las tribus del área, ante la colonización, saltaban del cañón y gritaban a Yumurí. The tropical adventure you need

El pasado 9 de julio el candidato vacunal Abdala, desarrollado por el Centro de Ingeniería Genética y Biotecnología (CIGB), de la mayor de las Antillas, recibió el Autorizo de Uso de Emergencias (AUE) por el Centro para el Control Estatal de Medicamentos, Equipos y Dispositivos Médicos (CECMED), con lo cual se convirtió en la primera vacuna cubana, latinoamericana y caribeña contra la COVID-19. Esta autoridad reguladora nacional, que es de referencia en la región y precalificada en materia de vacunas por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), consignó el permiso luego de realizar una rigurosa evaluación, según las normativas de la OMS, de toda la información que arrojaron los ensayos clínicos de Abdala, en sus tres fases, en los cuales se presentaron escasas reacciones adversas a la inoculación del medicamento. Abdala es una vacuna de subunidad proteica, basada en el sitio de unión al receptor (RBD) de la proteína S del virus, un tipo de plataforma en el que los científicos cubanos tienen mayor experiencia en la producción de inmunógenos, algunos de los cuales han sido los primeros de su tipo a nivel global y reconocidos por la comunidad científica internacional.
On July 9th, the Abdala vaccine candidate, developed by Cuba´s Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), received the Authorization for Emergency Use (AUE) from the Center for State Control of Medicines, Equipment and Medical Devices (CECMED), making it the first Cuban, Latin American and Caribbean vaccine against COVID-19. This national regulatory authority, which is a reference in the region and pre-qualified in the field of vaccines by the World Health Organization (WHO), granted approval after a rigorous evaluation of all the information provided by Abdala's clinical trials in its three phases according to WHO regulations, in which there were few adverse reactions to the inoculation of the drug. Abdala is a protein subunit vaccine based on the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the S protein of the virus, a platform in which Cuban scientists have extensive experience in the production of immunogens, some of which have been the first of their kind at a global level and recognized by the international
Altamente segura y eficaz
Las investigaciones demostraron el alto nivel de seguridad que posee la fórmula cubana, capaz de inducir una respuesta de anticuerpos específica al menos cuatro veces mayor que la observada en los sujetos inmunizados en el periodo pre vacunación; se comprobó, asimismo, que estos anticuerpos están aptos para neutralizar al virus e impedir que infecte a las células. En cuanto a la eficacia, Abdala presenta un 92,28 por ciento en la prevención de formas sintomáticas de la enfermedad infecciosa causada por el virus SARSCoV-2, por lo que cumple ampliamente los requerimientos de la OMS que plantea que, para que una vacuna se considere exitosa, deberá contar con una eficacia de un 50 por ciento o superior. Otra de las fortalezas que el inmunógeno cubano mostró es una eficacia del 100 por ciento para prevenir la enfermedad sistémica severa y un 100 por ciento para la prevención del fallecimiento en el grupo vacunado. Para su categorización como vacuna, el CECMED igualmente valoró sus procesos productivos, constatando las buenas prácticas y el cumplimiento de todas las exigencias en su fabricación, la cual se inicia en el CIGB, con la producción del antígeno específico de la vacuna, y se completa en los Laboratorios AICA, perteneciente a BioCubaFarma, instalaciones que disponen de suficiente capacidad instalada y tecnológica para elaborar más de 100 mil bulbos diarios, y volúmenes de llenado de 12 mil unidades por hora.

Highly safe and effective
The research showed the high level of safety of the Cuban formulation, capable of inducing a specific antibody response at least four times higher than that observed in subjects immunized in the prevaccination period; it was also proven that these antibodies are able to neutralize the virus and prevent it from infecting cells. In terms of efficacy, Abdala presents 92.28% in the prevention of symptomatic forms of the infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which means that it amply complies with the WHO requirements of at least 50% effectiveness to be considered a successful vaccine. The Cuban immunogen also has the strength of being 100% effective in preventing severe systemic disease and 100% effective in preventing deaths within the vaccinated group. To grant the vaccine qualification, CECMED also evaluated the production process and confirmed good practices and compliance with all requirements in its manufacture, which begins at the CIGB, with the production of the vaccine's specific antigen, and is completed at the AICA Laboratories, part of BioCubaFarma, facilities that have sufficient installed and technological capability to produce more than 100,000 bulbs per day and filling volumes of 12,000 units per hour.
La primera vacuna y otros cuatro candidatos
Abdala es el primero de los cinco candidatos vacunales cubanos en recibir el AUE, sin embargo, el resto de los prototipos cubanos, Mambisa del CIGB y Soberana 01, Soberana 02 y Soberana Plus, del Instituto Finlay de Vacunas (IFV), avanzan con buen paso, sobre todo estas dos últimas, las que se encuentran a la espera del permiso para su uso de emergencia. Además de Cuba, en el continente solo Brasil trabaja en formulaciones de inmunógenos propias, mientras que el resto de las naciones están aplicando vacunas importadas. La comunidad científica cubana trabaja en estos momentos en obtener para Abdala el registro sanitario definitivo y oficial como vacuna contra la COVID-19 y los expertos confían en que se logre antes de culminar el año. Abdala se viene administrando hace algunos meses a la población cubana, como parte de los ensayos clínicos y de las intervenciones sanitarias aprobadas en personal de riesgo, pero al obtener la categoría de vacuna ya se ha ampliado su administración a todos los territorios de la isla caribeña y se espera suministrarlo a naciones de la región y del mundo que han mostrado interés en obtenerla. Con la aprobación de Abdala como vacuna contra la COVID-19, Cuba se sitúa en la vanguardia de Latinoamérica y el Caribe en el aporte científico a la eliminación de esta pandemia en el mundo y en la isla antillana, ya que las autoridades gubernamentales y sanitarias aspiran a que para fines de año el 80 por ciento de la población esté inmunizada.
The first vaccine and four other candidates
Abdala is the first of five Cuban vaccine candidates to receive the AUE. However, the other Cuban prototypes: Mambisa from CIGB and Soberana 01, Soberana 02 and Soberana Plus from the Finlay Vaccine Institute (IFV) are advancing at a good pace, especially the last two, which are awaiting approval for their emergency use. Besides Cuba, only Brazil is working on its own immunogen formulations in the continent, while the rest of the countries are applying imported vaccines. The Cuban scientific community is currently working to obtain the definitive and official sanitary registration of Abdala as a vaccine against COVID-19, which experts believe will happen before the end of this year. Abdala has been administered to the Cuban population for some months now as part of the clinical trials and health interventions approved for risk groups. By obtaining vaccine status, however, its administration has been extended to the entire Caribbean island region and is expected to be available to other countries in the region and around the world that have expressed interest in using this vaccine. With the approval of Abdala as a vaccine against COVID-19, Cuba is at the vanguard of Latin America and the Caribbean in the scientific contribution to the eradication of this pandemic in the world and specially in the Antillean island, since government and health authorities intend to immunize 80 percent of the population by the end of this year.
