order that Iimited the objectives for Nucleus 11 and 111 as well as the visit of invited artists for Nucleus I. In these circumstances, Nucleus I, such as it would take shape in individual terms, reflects, significantly, the interpretations and decisions of the delegates of the invited countries in the face of the regulations' directives. Among the artists they selected are the ones from Brazil and the foreign participants under the direct responsibility of the Biennale, besides the more numerous contingent exhibiting in theMail Art section. But forthe actual display, in nuclei, of the comparative vectors of Nucleus I, it was considered necessary, since the beginning of the regulamentation of the display, the formation of an international committee that would be in charge of coordinating the works in suitable spaces and timings. With such a step, the Biennale widened its responsibilities of criticaI order, aiming, above ali, at the reading of the display by the public. As account of the results of the work done by the committe will be included in the catalogue. Separate from the three nuclei, the Biennale prepared the exhibition Arte Incomum", putting together artists from various countries and from Brazilian states. For the first time in Brazil an international display of this gender, focusing on a poetical creativity which is elaborated distant from the repertoires of major f1uency in art is organized. OI

The Biennale, thirty years after being created by Francisco Matarazzo Sobrinho, aimed at a renewal that will be able to reach new goals in the near future. As to this project, it is necessary to take into consideration the contribution given by cultural and artistic institutions from the several countries and their delegates. It is necessary to stress the complex and demanding task of coordinating thé works from Nucleus I under the guidance of Milan Ivelic (Chile), Donald Goodall (USA), Bruno Mantura (ltaly), Toshiaki Minemura (Japan), and Helen Escobedo (Mexico), colleagues of the undersigned in the committee. On the other hand, this curatorship wishes to point out the work of the team which made up the SPBF, decisive to the results envisaged. For the various tasks, there were integrated into the group Julio Plaza (Nucleus I - Mail Art), Victor Musgrave, Annateresa Fabris and Josette Balsa (Arte Incoml,lm), and Cacilda Teixeira da Costa (organizing the Video-Art displays); for the planning of space, the architect Jorge Aristides de Souza Carvajal; for the direction of the mounting team, Guimar Morelo; for the coordination of the material in the general catalogue, Ivo Mesquita; for the publishing and graphical production of the catalogues, Maria Otilia Bocchini and Julio Plaza, respectively. Gabriela Suzana Wilder was in charge of helping solve the various problems of the curatorship. One must stress the outstanding performance of Esther Emilio Carlos, Paulo Sergio Duarte, Donato Ferrari, Casimiro Xavier de Mendonça, Ulpiano Bezerra de Menezes, and Luiz Diederichsen Villares, members of the Council for Art and Culture of the SPBF, of which this curator participated. One should take into consideration the participation of the SPBF Board of Directors - and especially of its president, Luiz Diederichsen Villares - for the accomplishments of the exhibition's objectives. And to the dedication of the staff that one finally is indebted to for the realization of the XVI Biennale.
