Sol LeWitt has been one of the most influential practitioners of conceptual art, an innovative approach to art-making that emerged internationally in the mid1960s. Conceptual artists esteemed the original concept for awork of art as equal in importance to its material realization. What these artists proposed was aradical departure from the traditions of Western art, which had · long placed primary emphasis on the craftsmanship and rarity of the final product. Several texts by LeWitt were pivotal in describing this new way of making art, especially his widely disseminated Paragraphs on Conceptual Art (1967r and Sentences on Conceptual Art (1969).5 Sol LeWiWs wall drawings have had considerable influence, directly and indirectly, on the history of contemporary art. Their innovative conceptual underpinnings and frequently monumental yet ephemeral nature have encouraged several generations of younger artists to push the boundaries of contemporary art in many new directions, including l.'ita.l.'nal'ifil' inl.'t!ll/!ltil\n 'lr#- 'lnrl nl\rll\/'m'lnl'll\ 'lr#-
