cultural guide são paulo

The name Bienal de São Paulo holds a double meaning. The first relates to the temporality of the show, which has been produced and presented every two years for over seven decades. The second meaning is one of belonging. The Bienal belongs to the city of São Paulo, the venue of its action, a metropolis known for its historic vocation as host, welcoming people from Brazil and the world who come to the city to enjoy its attractions and, often, to work in its dynamic, innovative, and constantly expanding economy. This cultural guide, produced on the occasion of the 35th Bienal de São Paulo –choreographies of the impossible, is more than a list of places and activities. It is a carefully prepared invitation for visitors to the great exhibition at the Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion to discover the best of our vibrant cultural institutions and the most delicious of our rich and varied gastronomic scene.
This publication is part of a broader international program, organized and implemented by the Fundação Bienal de São Paulo, whose main objective is to optimize the reception of specialized foreign audiences, aiming to strengthen relations between national and international cultural institutions.
In addition to hosting groups from institutions around the world throughout the show, the program also offers a Student Week and an International Weekend, events that propose a busy cultural agenda for students and art professionals from different countries. These strategies contribute to strengthening the Bienal de São Paulo as a cultural destination that is increasingly recognized, visited, and revisited globally.
Throughout the more than seventy years of the Bienal de São Paulo, its exhibitions have attracted – and continue to attract – an audience of Brazilians and international visitors interested in viewing art’s most contemporary themes and works, as a meeting point between the local and the global. The Fundação Bienal de São Paulo is proud to be part of the history of the city that hosts it and to contribute to its consolidation as a cosmopolitan cultural center. None of this would be possible without the efforts of the International Advisory Board, which has played an invaluable role towards this broadening of borders, cultivating a network of international partners that celebrates art as a universal value and right. Welcome to São Paulo!

The Casa Modernista, designed by Gregori Warchavchik (1896-1972) in 1927 and built in 1928, is considered the first work of modern architecture in Brazil. In the 1920s, São Paulo witnessed artistic manifestations such as the Modern Art Week (1922) and the publication of Acerca da arquitetura moderna [On modern architecture] (1925), by Warchavchik himself. Designed to house the architect’s residence, the house generated a strong impact in intellectual circles and public opinion. The garden deserves special mention due to the pioneering use of tropical species in the landscaping. website

Known as the Museu do Ipiranga, this is the oldest public museum in the city. Its building was designed to commemorate the Proclamation of Independence in 1822 and was constructed between 1885 and 1890. In 1894, the newly established State Museum (Museu Paulista) was relocated to this monument. The museum has been steadily expanding its collections in São Paulo from 1850 to 1950. Presently, it houses a collection of over 450,000 items, including objects, iconography, and textual documentation spanning the 17th to the 20th centuries, which significantly contribute to our understanding of Brazilian society, particularly the history of São Paulo.
