IMPACT REPORT 2024 BIALIK

Thank you to everyone in our wonderful community, for making Bialik such a special learning environment. With your support, our students become curious, creative and critical thinkers. They develop strong Jewish identities and values, and a love of Israel. Each one of your 1,876 donations makes a big difference. Thank you for helping nurture tomorrow’s Jewish leaders.

We are proud to support Bialik’s incredible community, which has been part of the village that raised our kids. Bialik has been a steadfast beacon of strength through all the challenges — the team has not only dealt with dayto-day educational issues, but also a pandemic, a war in Israel and the rise of Antisemitism. Mazal Tov on your formidable job as a leading Jewish institution in Toronto. Thank you for all you have given our family.

Our Mission

Bialik Hebrew Day School is committed to providing an exemplary Jewish and General education to children in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 from diverse Jewish backgrounds. Bialik fosters a strong Jewish identity that embraces the values of our Labour Zionist roots – inclusivity, social justice and equality – in a warm and nurturing environment.

Hebrew fluency, Yiddish language and culture and a strong connection to Israel and the Jewish people are paramount. Our commitment to Jewish values, academic excellence and innovation inspires our students to become future Canadian and Jewish community leaders.

Message from Our Head of School and Our Development Committee Chair

The importance of Bialik’s mission to nurture strong Jewish identities and deep connections to Israel has never been clearer.

At Bialik, our students not only excel academically but also grow to appreciate the rich cultural and historical heritage that binds us together. These values, and our dedication to supporting our global Jewish family, led us to welcome into our school 100 Israeli students who sought refuge from the war. Doing so also underscores the core values of empathy and communal responsibility that define us as a Bialik community.

At Bialik, we believe that giving Tzedakah and a culture of philanthropy are integral to the Jewish values that we live each day. It is through acts of giving and support that we not only strengthen our own community but also extend our compassion and solidarity to those in need.

Our growing enrolment numbers are testament to the trust and confidence that our community places in Bialik. We are proud to be a school that integrates both Jewish values and academic rigour, preparing our students to thrive within our community and beyond.

We thank you for your ongoing support of, and commitment to, Bialik Hebrew Day School. Together, we are building a future where Jewish identity and love for Israel continue to flourish.

Message from Our Director of Development

As I reflect on the past year at Bialik, I am filled with immense gratitude for the unwavering support and dedication of all the members of our community who have contributed to the school and to our students. Your commitment has not only helped us achieve remarkable milestones, it has also strengthened the very foundation upon which our school stands.

Fundraising is more than just a financial endeavor; it is a testament to the collective spirit of our Bialik community and a reflection of our shared values. Each contribution, whether large or small, plays a vital role in fostering a culture of giving that ensures our mission can endure and thrive. Your generosity empowers us to continue providing an exceptional education that is deeply rooted in our Jewish identity.

At Bialik, we are steadfast in our commitment to nurturing future generations. Our curriculum is designed to instil a profound understanding and appreciation of Jewish values, while our programs celebrate our bond with Israel. This holistic approach to education prepares our students to become thoughtful, compassionate leaders who carry forward our traditions.

Your support is instrumental in making all of this possible. By contributing to our Annual CommUNITY Campaign, you are investing in more than just the day-to-day operations of our school; you are investing in the future of our community and the preservation of our values. Together, we are creating a legacy of excellence, one that will resonate through the lives of our students and beyond.

Thank you for being a cornerstone of our journey. Your partnership is invaluable and we look forward to continuing this meaningful work with you by our side.

Developing Our Future Innovators

Sheret Ross wishes he had learned to code at 10 years old. When he and his wife, Ali Wolfond, reflect on their time at Hebrew day school, they recall the science curriculum being taught primarily by the textbook.

MAKING A DONATION TO BIALIK’S STEM program fulfilled their desires to give back to their daughter Mia’s school. As a teacher, Ali wanted to support education, while Sheret is interested in the innovation supported by the program.

“Mia is in SK at Viewmount and so just getting into it, but she’s already asking when she can do STEM,” says Ali, who knows first-hand the quality of the program. She started her teaching career at Bialik, which also made it an easy choice for her daughter’s schooling.

“I knew the people and how skilled the educators are,” says Ali. Having grown up in Vancouver, Sheret was not familiar with the area schools, but he noticed Bialik’s collaborative approach and welcoming environment. They both wanted the sense of Jewish community that Hebrew day schools provide and a high level of education.

Both Ali and Sheret saw their parents invest in their schooling and in the community. In particular, Sheret’s grandfather supported the

school that his grandchildren attended on the West coast. As a result, as Viewmount parents, they are committed to doing what they can to give back to Bialik and to similarly role model the values that are important to them.

“We want to teach our kid the importance of community and the opportunity to help,” says Sheret. “We want our daughter to know her family had an impact on her school, her friends lives, her community.”

The gift the Ross family provided was used to buy STEM robots, something they chose because of its tangible impact on students. They think back on how robots might have made them more interested in science and expanded their education. Ali points out that this felt right for them, but encourages others to find the difference they can make.

“No matter how much you give — time or money — there is always an opportunity to help a school.”

We want our daughter to know her family had an impact on her school.” “

Showing Up in Support of Jewish Education

Adam and Jeanette Hummel are both strong believers in taking action, getting involved and encouraging others to join them.

“YOU CAN’T TAKE FOR GRANTED that things will get done in your community,” says Adam. “Decisions are made by those who show up, and there is plenty of room to be involved.”

Adam is a lawyer and the new Vice President of Bialik’s Board of Directors. For many years, he has been actively involved with other community organizations, like CIJA, Hillel and JIAS. He also writes a regular blog about the Canadian Jewish community. And now, with two children currently enrolled at the Himel Branch and a third to join in a few years, Adam is fully invested in the meaningful role he is able to play in the Bialik community.

The three years their family has been part of the Bialik community have been fantastic, says Adam. Both Sarah and Zev, in Grades 2 and SK respectively, benefit from a wealth of growth and educational opportunities through the academic curriculum. Learning about Judaism, Israel and Jewish identity reinforces everything the kids experience at home.

“We speak Hebrew when we don’t want the kids to understand what we’re saying and that’s getting harder to do,” says Adam, who is both

thrilled and more careful now that his kids are beginning to pick up what they’re saying, thanks to Bialik’s Hebrew program.

Where we spend our time shows our priorities. There’s nothing more important than our kids’ school.”

identities. Providing a safe place for their children to learn and fit in, Bialik has naturally become a focus of their community involvement.

The children have also developed amazing friendships. Adam finds that Himel provides a unique community environment that brings together people from a broad range of backgrounds. This diverse network of friends and family continues to grow at Himel thanks to their participation in various events and on committees.

Adam and Jeanette, who is a public school teacher, also see that Jewish day schools like Bialik give children confidence in their Jewish

“We benefitted from the Generations Trust last year and so when we realized that we could give some more to Bialik, we wanted to help others benefit too,” says Adam. He adds that he wants their kids to see the many ways there are to be involved in Bialik and the Jewish community, such as attending school events in the evenings and volunteering.

“Where we spend our time shows our priorities,” he says. “There’s nothing more important than our kids’ school.”

Contributing to a Culture of Giving

Elana Weisz’s two children love bringing Tzedakah on Fridays and remind her of it every week.

GRAYSON, IN GRADE 3, AND DAISY, IN GRADE 1, are learning about charitable giving at school and at home. Elana and her husband Steven are invested in teaching their kids about the importance of giving.

“We want to show them that this is what we do to take care of others,” Elana says, referring to the charitable events they attend in the evenings and the community activities they participate in as a family.

Bialik is one of those communities that benefits from the Weisz family’s Tzedakah. Most recently, Elana and Steven provided a generous gift towards Tuition Assistance, which was a way for them to help provide access for more Jewish children to attend the school.

“Now, more than ever, it’s comforting to be together as a Jewish community,” says Elana. She and Steven even undertook their own security and solidarity campaign for the school after the events of October 7, 2023. The initiative helped prevent school funds being diverted from educational needs due to the demands for additional security.

“We believe in learning about our history and culture and believe that others who want that education should have the opportunity to receive it,” says Elana. She attended Jewish day school in Hamilton, while Steven did so in Toronto. As they created their life together, they knew they wanted their family to have a similar educational experience.

“We toured three options and Bialik was most compatible with our values and how we wanted our kids to learn,” says Elana, adding that Grayson and Daisy love school.

We want to show them that this is what we do to take care of others.”

At the Viewmount Branch, both children have great groups of friends. She finds that the school is the right size so that each kid can find their place and have endless options for playing and engaging. From an academic perspective, the structure and routine help both kids know what is expected so they can excel.

Whether it’s giving to Bialik or the Weisz family’s involvement in various aspects of the Jewish community, the kids are learning by example. Before heading to school, they might pack a specific toy in their bag to lend to a friend. Elana also sees it in their desire to make a bracelet for a friend. They both show an openness to sharing, she says, which is so meaningful for everyone.

On March 6 — our Day of Giving — our parents, grandparents, staff and alumni came together with the single, determined purpose of supporting our school.

IT WAS A HUGELY EXCITING DAY, ignited by the energy, passion and dedication of our community members. Led by our committed parent and alum volunteers, we raised both Ruach and funds for Bialik.

“We knew that it was going to be different and special. I’d never seen such energy on the Day of Giving before,” says Himel’s Day of Giving Co-Chair Ronit Goldsmith. “You could just tell that all the volunteers wanted to do anything they could — calling, sending messages and cheering each other on with each donation.” The special feeling bore fruit, as we broke several Bialik Day of Giving records.

“At a time when people felt justifiably pulled to donate to so many other charities following the events of October 7, it was amazing to see how many members of our community were passionate enough about Bialik to help us surpass our goals,” says Franny Freed, Viewmount’s Day of Giving Co-Chair. “It shows our community’s strong belief in Jewish education and how much Bialik means to us all.”

928 128 $708,898

The Day of Giving — which relies on our community for donations that go towards facilities enhancements, tuition support and programmatic initiatives — is our biggest fundraising day of the year, and is crucial to maintaining our standing as a leading Jewish day school. Each of the Co-Chairs emphasizes that the tuition fees families pay only cover the basics of running our school, but it is the fundraising that helps create the full Bialik experience for our students. Whether investing in STEM robots, laying turf for a soccer field, building a garden or ensuring that each student has their own Chromebook, our community’s donations are what make the difference to our students.

Viewmount’s Co-Chair Michele Alter points out that “Our kids spend 10 months every year at Bialik and come home with a smile on their faces every day. That doesn’t just happen on its own. That’s a testament to the culture that has been created.”

And it is a culture that we are constantly working to maintain and improve. In difficult circumstances, we continue to set the bar high. “We brought in 100 Israeli students last year after October 7. It took a big effort to do that” comments Ronit. “That’s what makes us special. That is what these gifts allow us to do for our community.”

Our goal is to make our school accessible to everyone who wants a top-notch Jewish education. “Even something as small as not ordering in dinner one night and donating that money to the school makes a huge difference,” says Himel’s Co-Chair Lauren Greenbaum. “Getting your foot in the door of our community and taking advantage of all it has to offer is paramount to the Bialik experience. And hopefully it will keep you coming back when the next Day of Giving comes around.”

Endowing Our Jewish Future

In these uncertain times, it is increasingly important for Bialik to have a solid financial foundation. Ever more Jewish families are reaching out to Bialik to provide their children with the opportunity for a Jewish education.

THEY ARE LOOKING TO OUR SCHOOL to immerse their children in the Jewish values, identity and Ahavat Yisrael that are part of our school’s core values and beliefs. As the largest Jewish day school in Canada, not only do we need to offer the highest educational standards in General and Jewish Studies, we need to ensure that we can do this for our students in perpetuity.

The steps we have taken to purposefully set up an endowment for our school reflect our profound commitment to ensuring the continuity and accessibility of Jewish day schools for our community. Endowed gifts and legacy giving are crucial to securing Bialik’s longevity, allowing us to serve present and future generations of Jewish students. Our endowed fund, fuelled by long-term philanthropic gifts, is intended to grow over time, bolstering Bialik’s ability to serve its mission in perpetuity.

Bialik is very fortunate that a generous group of philanthropic leaders in our community has taken on this responsibility. They have joined our Founders Circle of passionate donors who are committed to preserving the rich tradition of Jewish education by jointly providing a million-dollar foundation for the endowed fund.

In April, we celebrated our Founders Circle philanthropists, taking the opportunity to thank

them for their foresighted gifts. We gathered at an event generously hosted by Judy and Jerry Naiberg, to honour these donors who have shown their commitment to securing Bialik’s ongoing sustainability.

Judy Naiberg is a Board member with nine grandchildren currently attending the school. Passionate about their Jewish education, she says, “The quality of their learning at Bialik is outstanding, the facilities are superb and, most of all, the kids learn to love Israel and to live their Jewish values. Jerry and I feel that it is vitally important to ensure that these opportunities

are available to the youngest members of our Jewish community.”

It is a source of great pride that our Bialik endowment continues to grow, ensuring that our vibrant Jewish education can be passed M’Dor L’Dor, from generation to generation. We are very grateful to our dedicated, visionary donors whose leadership ensures Bialik’s longterm stability for our future Jewish leaders. If you would like to join Bialik’s Founders Circle, please contact Sr. Development Officer Aily Goodis at agoodis@bialik.ca.

Donations in Action

Interactive Maps of Israel

Our new maps of Israel have brought a fresh, interactive dimension to students’ lessons about our homeland’s history and geography. Grade 4 students are able to integrate their learning about the famous sights in Israel as they program their robot to move from city to city on the enhanced, large-form floor maps. Your contributions have been essential in enriching our educational environment and fostering a stronger connection to the land and culture of Israel.

Sports Equipment

Thanks to the generous support of our donors, we have upgraded our sports facilities with new, state-of-the-art equipment at both branches. This investment has significantly enhanced our physical education program, providing students with the tools to improve their skills and participate in a wide range of activities. From updated athletics gear to advanced fitness equipment, these additions have invigorated our sports curriculum.

Farmers Market

Bialik hosted successful farmers markets at each branch, showcasing the fruits of our students’ hard work. From planting and nurturing seeds at the start of the year to caring for the growing plants, our students were actively engaged in every step of the process. The farmers markets allowed them to take pride in their achievements by selling the plants they had cultivated, connecting their classroom learning with realworld experiences. Your contributions have been instrumental in making this unique, hands-on learning experience in entrepreneurship and responsibility possible.

Tower Gardens

Through your contributions, Bialik has been using tower gardens at both our branches, transforming our STEM environmental program and enriching students’ experiences. These vertical aeroponic systems have provided hands-on learning opportunities in plant biology and environmental science, while fostering a deeper appreciation for sustainable practices. Students are now actively involved in growing their own vegetables and herbs, learning about food security and sustainability, and linking classroom lessons with realworld applications.

Tuition Support

We are proud to highlight our Tuition Support program that has enabled many families to provide their children with a Bialik education. With the enormous growth in interest in attending Bialik, the generous support of our community makes Jewish education more accessible to families. It also strengthens our community by ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn and grow in a nurturing Jewish environment. Together, we are building a brighter future for our children and enriching our shared Jewish values.

Enhancing Security and Community Support

In the wake of October 7 and the ensuing war, our commitment to the safety and well-being of our students has become even stronger. Thanks to our community, we were able to welcome 100 Israeli students seeking refuge in Canada, ensuring that they felt supported and secure in our community. We have made significant investments in multi-layered security improvements at both branches and have strengthened our partnerships to enhance safety protocols.

Bialik Games

Our 2024 Bialik Games were a wonderful time for families from both branches to team up for a day of activity and fun.

The Games began with everyone warming up for the friendly competition and ended in victory for the Chai Flyers, a team that combined members from our Himel and Viewmount Branches.

In addition to the heart-thumping team events and the Mini Bialik Games, sponsored in honour of Alex Grossman, the Games made a direct impact on access to Jewish education, with funds raised going towards our Tuition Support program. This friends-and-family event was important in promoting the value of giving back to our community.

Thank you to our Bialik Games Co-Chairs, Lauren Sigal and Zack Belzberg, our planning committee, the parent team captains, and the many volunteers for their hard work in organizing this successful event. We would also like to thank our generous sponsors and in-kind donors for their support. And most importantly, thank you to our community for making this Ruach-filled day possible and allowing our two branches to come together and give back to the school we all love.

Honouring our GenerousDonors

Todah Rabah to our many donors who have contributed generously to our students’ Bialik experience. Our supportive Kehila, our community, has given to the Bialik Endowment and our Annual CommUNITY Campaign, including the Day of Giving. Thank you for making an impact on our school, now and in the future.

Bialik has done a great job with our children in building a strong connection to Israel and a great sense of community. It is more important than ever to support these values.”
—David Schlesinger and Lindsey Title

“Providing high quality education for Jewish children in our community is critical. We are beyond thrilled that our grandchildren can experience the absolute finest teachings at Bialik, which will hopefully last a lifetime. We are very committed to Jewish education and have contributed to helping Jewish families in the GTA access day school education for their children. Our grandchildren, with thanks and gratitude to their wonderful parents, are truly lucky to attend Bialik and we hope that our donation to the school helps to ensure that Bialik continues to have the best facilities and the best quality Jewish educational experiences possible.

–Carol Mitchell and Richard Venn (Mitch and Rich)

Contributors

Please accept our apologies if you have not been appropriately recognized and we ask you to reach out to our Development Office at development@bialik.ca.
