OUR MISSION Bialik Hebrew Day School is committed to providing an exemplary Jewish and General education to children in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 from diverse Jewish backgrounds. Bialik fosters a strong Jewish identity that embraces the values of our Labour Zionist roots – inclusivity, social justice and equality – in a warm and nurturing environment. Hebrew fluency, Yiddish language and culture and a strong connection to Israel and the Jewish people are paramount. Our commitment to Jewish values, academic excellence and innovation inspires our students to become future Canadian and Jewish community leaders.

The responsibility that Bialik has to nurture the Jewish identities and excite the inquiring minds of our future Jewish and Canadian leaders is a huge one. But we don’t assume this responsibility alone — we do it together with you, our Kehila (our community) — and we thank you for your generous support in helping us achieve our goals. Our students at both Bialik branches feel the direct impact of your giving, whether it be in the beautiful facilities, the playgrounds, tuition support, or the innovative programming that shapes the Bialik learning experience each day. This Impact Report speaks to the success of our school. We are resilient and strong and steadfast in our mission, and our school is sought after by many families in Vaughan and Toronto. We stand out in our community, having grown to now educate over 1,500 students. Our buildings are filled to capacity with students and we revel in their energy, enthusiasm and engagement in their learning. Our outstanding administrators and faculty work tirelessly to provide the most innovative, hands-on experiences for our students. And especially at a time like this, when we are all feeling the pain of the war in Israel, we are standing together with even greater resolve as a Jewish community and with Israel. We are grateful to parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty and friends who support our school with gifts large and small. L’dor V’dor, from generation to generation: by providing our

students with their excellent Bialik education, we know that our Jewish traditions and values are passed down to the next generation. Lessons our students learn at home and at school will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Thank you for making it possible to pass on our rich heritage. Each of our families gives to our school for their own reasons. They all have their own Bialik stories that motivate them to support our school. It may be the sound of their children singing Ma Nishtana at the Seder table, a teacher who helped a child through a difficult time, or being proud of how well-prepared their Grade 8 graduate is for high school. In this Impact Report, you will read some of the stories that inspire our donors to give. We always say that the very act of participating as a donor, rather than the amount given, is what is most important. The numbers of our school’s donors, including the growing number of first-time donors, proves that there is strength in numbers and enormous value in collaborating together. GIVING TO PRESERVE CULTURE AND COMMUNITY For Brittany and Shane Urowitz, the ability to send their kids to a local Jewish day school drives them to give to Bialik’s Annual Campaign. “It’s important to us that Bialik stays in our neighbourhood. The history in the Thornhill area is that Jewish schools haven’t been successful in staying here,” says Brittany. “For us, donating makes sense to support the school that takes care of our children and the greater community.” Both Brittany and Shane grew up in the Thornhill area and now, their young family is too. With two sons attending Himel Branch, Mason in Grade 2 and Rory in SK, and two-yearold Tyler set to join in a couple of years, the family views Bialik as an important part of their community. As a child of the Jewish day school environment, Shane felt it was important their children

have that same opportunity to learn Jewish culture and come home able to recite prayers, discuss holidays and sing Hebrew songs. “But it’s not just dropping off and picking up the kids; we’re there ourselves,” says Shane. He points to Brittany’s role on the Parent Association Executive as one example of this. She volunteers there weekly. They are active members of the school, which also helps them see the impact of their donations. Rory and Mason come home from school happy and engaged with both the cultural and academic learning. Rory looks forward to his classroom Shabbat celebrations and loves giving Tzedakah. Brittany notes that Mason enjoys aspects of Bialik’s academic curriculum

A MULTI-GENER GIFT

ERATIONAL SPARKS PLAY It’s no secret to Brie and Jeffrey Kimel that, when it comes to school, their children love recess most of all. When Cooper and Ryder come home from their Grade 3 and 1 classes, respectively, they talk about recess. “They have been beyond happy, socially and academically,” says Brie, a Bialik alum herself (Class of 2000). “When the kids come home and we ask how their day was, it’s measured through recess and a fun game of soccer.” As a result, when the Kimels thought about how they might give back and support the school, they felt it was important to make a positive impact related to how their children play at Bialik. family was able to direct a donation towards the installation of new turf on the playing field and two new play structures at Viewmount branch. “Bialik exceeds our expectations. It was a no-brainer to give back,” says Brie. She points to the school’s inclusivity and the size of the grades, which means their children can develop many friendships. Although Bialik was at the top of her list, she and Jeffrey toured all options before enrolling their kids. Their daughters will also experience the new playground when they join Bialik. Cleo will start JK in 2024 and 10-month-old Indie will follow in a few years. For now, the family sees their boys and the many friends they’ve made at Bialik enjoying the new playground — sometimes in unexpected ways. While Cooper and Ryder love to play soccer, the field’s usage is limited only by the children’s creativity. A recent visit saw kids cartwheeling and playing with toys there. “Sports and physical activity play a big role in our lives, but this was also an opportunity to teach our children about the importance of giving back,” says Jeffrey. He also notes how meaningful it was to be able to do that alongside his parents. “When you’re fairly young in establishing your careers and families, you think you can’t have an impact yet,” says Brie. “But the multi-generational aspect helped, so we could partner to make a more substantial gift than we could do on our own.”

In March 2023, Viewmount parents Lauren Sigal and Zack Belzberg began their version of The Amazing Race. As Co-Chairs of the inaugural Bialik Games, Lauren and Zack quickly became effective partners to bring the games to life — just two months later, “Viewmount Principal Jake Gallinger envisioned some kind of competitive, team-based event to bring parents together outside of school,” explains Zack, who had managed similar peer-to-peer fundraising sports events. With his son Charlie in SK and two more children joining Bialik in the future, Zack saw an opportunity to bring the school community together in a different and fun way. But he knew he couldn’t do it alone.

COMMUNI CONNECTION THRIVES BIALIK GAM

“It was a no-brainer for me to get involved,” says Lauren, whose twin boys Jonah and Ben are in Grade 2. “The school is really important to my family. It’s an amazing place, so having an event that showcases that is key.” Both Zack and Lauren acknowledge that everyone is busy, which was part of the draw to create such a unique event. “It’s easy to get lost in the busy-ness of life and routine, which is why it’s important to stop and do things that bring people together,” says Zack. He found meeting people particularly rewarding. From the volunteer committee to the school administration and the 17 teams that were captained by parents, Zack interacted with so many people within the school community. The event in May was meant to bring together adults for a day of competitive lawn sports. It turned out to be fun for the whole family. Lauren says that a “fully family-friendly day” will be an increased focus for 2024. “We got to create something that really held true to the spirit of Bialik, of family inclusivity,” adds Lauren. “It connected people to the school, and it really connected the two branches so that we felt like one unit.”

With the Games established and more planning time, Lauren and Zack hope the 2024 event will be even bigger and better — with more participation and more money raised. Many 2023 teams have already signed up and new teams are forming. “The Bialik community is generally built on people who participate and show up,” says Zack. “With that energy and excitement around the school, it’s fun to be involved in planning and giving back.”

A GIFT OF LOVE Everyone at the Himel Branch knows Rajan Arunachalam, although few may know that his job title is “Building Supervisor.” Because Raj does, and is, so much more. Raj has been at the Himel Branch since it opened in 2013 and is known and loved by students and parents alike. He is the first person families see when they drive into Himel West in the morning. He is a calming voice and reassuring presence for students. Students gather around him throughout the day. And at the start of the school year, Raj is one of the first people students want to tell about their summer breaks. So it is no surprise that when Raj recently brought his new wife to Toronto, numerous families reached out, keen to help her settle in her new country.

Himel Branch thrive that his pledge is the way he gives back. “I see the student’s faces every day and I talk to the parents,” says Raj. “This school is like my family and everyone has always been so good to me and now, to my wife.”

But few people know that Raj quietly and regularly contributes to the Bialik community with his monthly donation to the Annual CommUNITY Campaign. So important is it to him to see the

We sincerely appreciate Raj’s steadfast generosity and that of all teachers and staff who support our school community. Working at Bialik is more than a job, it’s being part of the Bialik family.

Raj has seen the Himel Branch grow from its handful of classes and 64 students through numerous growth phases to this year educating 552 students in two buildings. He reflects: “I am very proud of the school and the way it has grown. Of course, I will give because I want the school to go from success to success.”

DONATIONS IN ACTION The Lunchroom

Viewmount Upper Gym

Like many spaces in our school buildings, the Viewmount Lunchroom was multi-functional, but without being properly equipped for all its roles: At lunchtime, Senior Division students gather here to eat lunch together, socialize and make friends. In the mornings and afternoons, it’s home to our Beit Bialik program. At other times, it serves as a meeting room for staff, parent and student gatherings. And now, thanks to generous support from families who gave to the Annual CommUNITY Campaign, the Lunchroom has been painted, is well-lit and equipped with appropriate furniture. The new folding tables and benches can easily be put out for daily student lunchtimes while the storage units along the walls ensure that Beit Bialik equipment is safely and neatly stored each day. We are excited to be using our newly fitted Lunchroom and enjoying its many benefits.

The Upper Gym floor has long been in need of a major upgrade. As Viewmount Principal, Jake Gallinger reflected: “For over 10 years, every time I came into the Gym and saw the discoloured tile floor with all its cracks, I longed for the day when we could redo the flooring. My dreams finally came true this summer when donations from our community enabled us to replace the tiles with a beautiful sprung floor.” The new floor provides significant aesthetic enhancements to the Gym, including a layer of padding to limit the severity of impact when students are running and jumping. And, in the middle, we are proud to sport our bear-paw athletics logo. This upgrade project was funded by the Annual CommUNITY Campaign as well as, in part, by Allon and Pnina Bross.

Himel East Learning Commons While space for learning is important, equally so are the seating, desks and equipment we provide to optimize our students’ learning experience. The newly refurbished Himel East Learning Commons provides a large and diverse space for students’ learning. Here, we see the optimal use of space — the areas divided into a library, a lunch room and a STEM area — with modular furniture that can be moved and reshaped according to students’ needs. We are grateful to the Himel PA who, through programming and support from generous parents, funded this renovation.

Himel Soccer and Basketball Nets Recess at Himel East is a lively time, with Grade 4 - 8 students playing and socializing in the courtyard. Our

Parent Association identified the need for sports equipment to fuel the students’ energy and now, with the provision of new soccer and basketball nets and balls, students can get even more active. Thank you to our Parent Association donors for enabling us to bring fun and games to our students’ recesses.

Chanukiot Through support from our Himel PA and generous parents, we have added two new Chanukiot at Himel. The Chanukiot — located at both Himel East and West — provide a hands-on opportunity for Bialik students of all ages to learn about Chanukah, its customs, and the values it represents. The Chanukiot make it possible for students and staff to come together and celebrate as a community. The Chanukiot serve as a visual reminder that Bialik students value and honour Jewish traditions.

INVESTING IN JEWISH EDUCATION FOR GENERATIONS As a prominent educational institution committed to fostering Jewish education and community, Bialik is a proud participant in the Life and Legacy™ initiative in collaboration with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation and the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto. Setting up an endowment for our school reflects our profound commitment to ensuring the sustainability and accessibility of Jewish day schools for Jewish families in our community. Endowed gifts are crucial to securing Bialik’s longevity, allowing us to serve not only present, but also future generations of Jewish students. Daniel Held, Chief Program Officer at the UJA, a driving force behind the Life and Legacy™ program, believes that Jewish education’s thriving future lies in diligent planning and substantial support. He appreciates Bialik’s leadership in participating in the program, showing foresight in ensuring the school’s financial sustainability. He says, “As the largest Jewish day school in Greater Toronto, Bialik’s active involvement in the Life and Legacy™ program 14

sends a strong message to the community, embodying a commitment to preserving the rich tradition of Jewish education.” The Life and Legacy™ program holds a special place in the hearts of many, reflecting their passion for the continuity and accessibility of Jewish education. Our endowed fund, fuelled by lifetime and testamentary gifts, will grow over time, bolstering Bialik’s abilities to serve its mission in the long term. The Bialik Founders Circle, currently a group of 13 visionary supporters (with the hope of growing to include 20 members), stands as a symbol of dedication and foresight, contributing to the launch and growth of the fund. In the words of Melissa Kramer, a devoted Bialik supporter and Board member, her family’s contribution holds immense significance. “Knowing our gift would continue to benefit the school and students in perpetuity was so important to us”, she shared. Melissa’s belief in the enduring impact of the endowment is driven by the

transformative experiences her children had at Bialik. She expresses confidence that her family’s gift will help build Bialik’s financial stability, ensuring that more families and children can experience the privilege of a Bialik education and be part of this wonderful community. Similarly, Judy Naiberg — a Board member whose grandchildren currently attend the school — along with her husband, Jerry, invest in the endowment. “I have seven grandchildren (and growing!) at Bialik and want to ensure they, and the generations to come, continue to benefit from the state-of-the-art facilities, top-notch education, and wholehearted love of Israel and Jewish values,” she says. The Bialik endowment stands as a beacon of hope, ensuring that Jewish education remains accessible, vibrant, and transformative for our future generations. Through the dedication and passion of our community, Bialik will continue to thrive, promising a legacy of educational excellence for all.

Recognizing Giving Levels For many years, Bialik has thanked and listed our generous donors in our annual magazine, Kol Bialik. But we want to do better — and we are starting with this, our first Impact Report 2022—23. Each year, our Impact Report will be distributed to our community to celebrate the generosity of our donors and share stories of how they, and you, are making a difference to Bialik through philanthropy. In this report, all donors are listed alphabetically as before. But as we strive to improve our Annual Campaign and donor recognition program, we have decided to make a change in the way we recognize our valuable donors. Moving forward, we will begin a new recognition system based on giving levels. We believe that this change will better reflect the significant impact your generosity has on Bialik’s ability to fulfill its mission.
