OF SANTA BARBARA STORY THE

Santa Barbara is a coastal city situated between the steeply rising Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Santa Barbara’s climate is often described as Mediterranean, and the city has been dubbed “The American Riviera”.

The history of Santa Barbara runs deep, through many cultures, across the Santa Barbara Channel, and throughout the city as it stands today. From the basketry and boatbuilding techniques of the Chumash Indians, to the Spanish Colonial influence that can be seen around every corner, Santa Barbara’s history is vast and truly unique. Spanish settlers gave the city its distinct architectural style in the form of Old Mission Santa Barbara and what is now the County Courthouse — a

style that was carried forward by local visionaries after a massive earthquake destroyed much of the area’s infrastructure in 1925.

Located on a pristine stretch of California’s central coastline, Santa Barbara brings together the Golden State’s Spanish influence, laid-back vibe, and upscale sensibility in a way very few places can.

Santa Barbara is known not only for its broad, sandy beaches, but its exhilarating outdoor adventures, fascinating arts and culture, and an incredible variety of local food and wine, making it a very popular tourist destination today.

OUR NEW ADVENTURE

Why would you leave this place?

Leaving Painted Cave will be bittersweet. We have put our heart and souls into making this our dream house. My wife Kara is from New Zealand. She has been in the states for 20+ years and it is time to return home and be near her parents. I am excited for the move because I love New Zealand, so do our kids—it has been our home away from home. But I will miss it here.

What brought you to the Painted Cave area?

We bought the place at the end of the year in 2016. We had been living near the beach in Santa Barbara but wanted a change in pace—slower, less busy, an atmosphere where your day-to-day life is more connected to nature. Then we stumbled onto Painted Cave though friends of ours that live on West Comino Cielo. Their realtor found us this beautiful A-frame that was built in 1977—the year Kara was born. As soon as we stepped into the living room and saw that view through those vaulted windows, we were hooked. Being a surfer, I wasn’t too sure about living so far from the beach. But, with this view I can see almost all the Channel Islands and the whole coastline from Campus Point, Goleta all the way to Point Mugu. The house was a mess and needed a lot of work, but it had good bones and a ton of potential. Kara comes from the fashion world, so she has an eye for design. Everything is 100% her vision. She worked with our good friend, architect Anna Jensen-Stewart to draft up her vision. I cut away some vines and discovered that the house is built on top of huge sandstone boulders. I’m a rock climber, so these rocks were a welcome feature.

What made you fall in love with the area?

For us, Painted Cave has the best of many worlds. It feels remote, but you are only a 15-minute drive to town—no traffic and only one stop sign. And, since you are at the top of highway 154, you have the option to drop down the other way to Los Olivos and Santa Ynez. There is also one of our favorite dinner spots just down the road here at Cold Spring Tavern. Painted Cave also has its own micro-climate, much different than in town. In the winter it is always 10 degrees colder, and the weather is dynamic. On most days you can watch clouds pour in over the mountains and storms brewing out at sea. Sometimes it even snows. In the summer it is almost always sunny, 10 degrees warmer than town and you are nestled above the dreaded June Gloom fog.

What will you miss most about this area?

One of the biggest things I will miss is Painted Cave’s tight knit community. You really feel part of something up here. The neighbors stick together. I especially admire the older holdouts, the hippies who moved up here in the 60’s and 70’s to “get away from it all”. Their history has really set the tone. When we first moved up here there were hardly any families with children. Now there are many, and some have become great friends. I feel it’s important for whoever moves into our house to have reverence for the place and the people who have paved the way.
