1420 ALAMEDA PADRE SERRA History
As one of the few remaining historic homes of merit in Santa Barbara’s original Riviera, 1420 Alameda Padre Serra is part of the Marine Acreage, subdivided by the Riviera Company under George Batchelder after 1913.
Originally built for Umberto Dardi, a local banker and vintner, the structure is one of the first home sites recorded in the area, all on the northern side of what is now Alameda Padre Serra. Unfortunately, due to fires in 1929 and limited permit records, there are no listed architects named for the construction of 1420, but it is an authentic masterpiece in Spanish Colonial architecture of the time.
George Batchelder was a visionary investment banker who retired to Santa Barbara in 1908, and transformed the barren Mission Ridge into the prestigious Riviera neighborhood, earning the title

“Father of the Riviera.” He developed a high-end residential subdivision, platting home sites on a curving grid to ensure unobstructed city, ocean, and island views. Batchelder’s innovative vision included planting hundreds of oak seedlings, employing Italian stonemasons under master Joseph Dover for handcrafted stonework, and mandating underground utilities and elegant tile-roofed, white stucco homes, setting a standard for luxury that endures in this iconic Santa Barbara enclave.

Ernest Batchelder, a Los Angeles-based artist, began crafting his iconic tiles in 1910, capitalizing on a construction boom in the Arroyo Seco area. Operating from his Altadena home, where he fired tiles in a backyard kiln, Batchelder’s hand-wrought creations became celebrated for their subtle colors, mottled textures, and nature-inspired designs influenced by Medieval, Mayan, and Byzantine motifs. His tiles, made from encaustic, non-vitreous clay with mineral slip fired into the surface, adorned fireplaces, floors, and other features in homes across Southern California, including Santa Barbara’s grand Granholm Estate and the Music Academy of the West. Prized for their durability and artistic value, Batchelder tiles remain a hallmark of the Arts and Crafts era, with surviving tiles from wildfire-ravaged Altadena homes symbolizing resilience and community heritage.

Real estate roots run deep for Charlie, being the 4th generation of realtors in his family. Growing up in the Napa Valley where his father sold luxury real estate for over 35 years, Charlie continued the tradition, earning a Broker’s license selling real estate in both the Napa Valley and San Francisco. Growing up in the “family business” gave him a formative exposure in real estate that fostered a strong intuition in the market and an ability to work with a wide range of clientele. Combining those early observations with a strong business and marketing background, as well as a natural talent for understanding each client’s unique situation, Charlie continues his passion for real estate in the Santa Barbara market.
On the personal side Charlie, and his wife, a UCSB Gaucho, spent 7 years living abroad in Croatia with their three children prior to making Santa Barbara their forever home. As Charlie says, “It was an opportunity of a lifetime, and sometimes you have to just seize the moment.” This time abroad on the Adriatic coast gave him a

new appreciation for living a vivacious life, being fully present and subscribing to a slower pace of quality over quantity.
As a dedicated, hands-on father who has moved his family internationally Charlie has a global perspective, while at the same time really understands and appreciates what it takes in finding your community and putting down roots in a place you call home. “I’ve done extensive research and traveled widely, and Santa Barbara is truly a unique place with the very best of everything to offer.” In his free time, you can find him sailing, playing tennis with his family, or being involved in volunteering at his church and in the community.
Charlie has a detailed, proactive, and authentic approach to real estate. He is passionate in helping you in this season of your life and brings to the table a great ability to strategize and execute, bringing your vision to reality.
