MQS - What is the Cloud Based Technology Service onoffering for MICE Sector by Alibaba Group?

DW : Firstly, it’s our pleasure to have this MOU signing with SACEOS to work together for technological advancement in the MICE Industry. We want to ser ve largest number of consumers in real-time with low co st a n d a l s o to p rovide personalised service to the consumers. All these things are needed to be driven by technology. That is why we have so many Chinese consumers and some consumers from South East Nations.

MQS – What is the key to this service for the MICE sector?

DW : The key is digitalization and customized service to the consumers.

MQS – When you say consumer, do you mean the direct enduser or MICE sector as a wholesince MICE sector is more B2B? DW – Yes. I feel it’s more for the end user.

MQS – With this MOU would you like to go on different nations or would you like to restrictyourself to Asia?

DW – For this MOU with SACEOS we can provide cloud and media services. As SACEOS is well known to provide good service with MICE industry events.

-Dr. Derek Wang M Q Syed In exclusive talks with Dr. Derek Wang and Aloysius Arlando during SMF 2019, Singapore platform especially a big name from MICE sector and the other a technology giant to provide a much needed service for the MICE sector. What’s your take on this?

AA – We are indeed very honoured to have partnered with Alibaba and to look at how the MICE industry can be digitally improved.

Why it’s important is because our focus through business events on customers’centricity as customer’s demands get way more exacting and it evolves we will need to be pre-active where we dedicate them with our service and solutions. Technology is going to play a critical part for us to understand our customers so well and we therefore need at a price systems,cloud based services such

as Alibaba to seehow we can configure solutions for different organisers and players in the MICE industry so that they can simply be customer centric and customer focussed. And, that’s something which we believe through this partnership we will uncover a lot of opportunities but we are putting how can we best realise those oppor tunities. As I mentioned in my opening remarks, we want to use this MOU to zoom in on specific initiatives that can be adopted by the players in the MICE industry. Many of whom are SME’s. There’s a solution that’s going to be costeffective as it’s a cloud based system anyways and that’s something we want to see how we can make sure the customer at

the end of the day is going to benefit immensely from the services being provided whether it’s for an event or even enjoying a destination. I would like to add that the partnership that we have through the MOU with Alibaba stems from the one which we signed with Alibaba and the Singapore Tourism Board to move on additionally enabled destination play that something which we take guidance from and we want to ensure that we are able to roll that out in MICE industry.

MQS – During which timeline do you think this MOU will be executed?

AA – I think we want to calibrate the different needs and dig over the next few months to sit down and see which the specific areas are. Then we’ll be able to identify what are the key areas or prototypes we can use to roll them out. So, I think we’ll take such a process and I think that at the end of the day it’s how can we be scalable. So I think only by prototyping and test running with few interested companies and where it works, I owe the things which typically will be the case whenever we look at the price systems and applications to Industry, we hope to roll it out to Industry at launch.

MQS – If you talk about SMF 2020, do you think this MOU will be having a way forward and will have some execution already on the way?

AA : We certainly want to aim for some good show pieces and case studies by 2020.

EEPC to hold engineering show in Coimbatore for first time Over 400 delegates from 50 countries will participate in the event The International Engineering Sourcing Show (IESS) will be held in Coimbatore for the first time --from March 4 to 6 next year the Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC) India announced on Wednesday. This is the ninth edition of the show, and the previous ones were held in Mumbai and Chennai.

Rakesh Shah, Chairman – Publicity, Exhibition and Delegation Committee and former Chairman of EEPC India, told presspersons that this was the first time that a “non-metro” city was chosen to hold the show. “Metros are not necessarily the industrial hubs,” he said, highlighting the various industries present in Coimbatore.

On whether the future editions of IESS will focus on non-metro cities, Mr. Shah

replied in the affirmative, saying that EEPC India would open 15 of its chapters in Tier-II and Tier-III cities this year. “Smaller towns and cities will be the industrial hubs of tomorrow,” he said.

The theme of the forthcoming edition of IESS will be “Smart Engineering”, Mr. Shah said. About 400 delegates from over 50 countries will participate in the show, where buyers and sellers can have a one-on-one interaction, Mr. Shah said.

S. Chandrasekar, Convenor & Chairman, EEPC India – Coimbatore Chapter, said the show in Coimbatore would be held at CODISSIA Trade Fair Complex. Over 300 Indian delegates would also participate, he said.

The sixth, seventh and eighth editions of IESS, which were held in Chennai, saw more than 21,000 business queries valued over $14.14 million and the signing of eight Memoranda of Understanding, according to a press release. More than 60% of the members of EEPC India belong to the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, for which IESS would provide a platform to reach the global engineering forum in India.

Alibaba Cloud and SACEOS Announce Partnership to Empower Singapore’s Hospitality Industry with AI and Cloud Technologies Alibaba Cloud, the data intelligence backbone of Alibaba Group, and the Singapore Association of Convention & Exhibition Organisers & Suppliers (SACEOS) signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding at the Singapore MICE Forum 2019 (SMF 2019) on July 25.

The agreement will see the two parties work together to offer trainings and technologies collaborations in the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, and Cloud, towards maintaining Singapore’s edge in an increasingly competitive MICE and hospitality landscape.

Singapore is the top Asian destination for meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) industry. MICE visitors make up 15% of arrivals in Singapore and 22% of spending in H1 2018, with tourism receipts from MICE growing by 10% in 2018 and a 14% increase in MICE visitors as compared to the same period in 2017. The city was also ranked as the top Asian city for meetings by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) for 16 consecutive years and named the Top Asia Pacific Destination for the third consecutive year in Cvent’s rankings of Top Meeting Destinations in Asia Pacific for 2018.

As part of the collaboration, SACEOS and its members will examine the use of Alibaba Cloud data intelligence solutions. SACEOS and Alibaba Cloud will also explore hosting training and workshops to equip SACEOS members with the technology competencies to transform their businesses and ensure their events remain world-class from conception through to execution. Alibaba Cloud will also connect Singapore hospitability industries with Alibaba ecosystem and millions of potential Chinese customers to drive arrivals and spending.

Chatbots can also provide 24/7 online support and deliver information in natural language to enhance visitor experience and customer loyalty.

Big Data solutions can help the industry to discover patterns and seize new opportunities that may be hidden. This allows MICE industry to tap on Alibaba Cloud’s data analytics ability to transform data into actionable insights and create innovations for the industry, such as more personalised services and targeted marketing. Alibaba Cloud data visualization tools already in use at major business events and airports can help meeting organizers with crowd management and safety.

Cloud technology like live video broadcasting and video-on-demand solutions enables low latency and high concurrent broadcasting of events to millions of viewers around the world at the same time. Alibaba Cloud’s Video AI solution can automatically identify the best moments during a broadcast to produce instant replays and highlights.

With Alibaba Cloud’s Mini Program Cloud, Singapore hospitality industries like event organizers, hotels and resorts, restaurants and retail companies can easily build and launch mini programs into Alibaba ecosystem connecting with millions of Chinese visitors to Singapore.

Alibaba Cloud is also working closely with hospitality industries in Singapore for leisure travellers. In April 2019, as part of a three-year Alibaba ecosystem-wide MOU with the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), Alibaba Cloud is partnering with STB and the tourism industry to create smart tourism experiences for inbound Chinese travellers.

The First Global – Vegan India Expo 2019 concludes in Delhi Vegan population is rapidly increasing in India and across the world. One of the important factors that drive the development of the vegan market is increased awareness of the health advantages of plant-based products.

The Vegan India Expo 2019, the first global B2B vegan fair in the country, took place between 5 and 7 July at the NSIC Exhibition Grounds in Delhi. Vegan India Expo was by supported by National Small-Scale Industries Corporation (NSIC), World Vegan Federation and Federation India Animal Protection Organizations (FIAPO) and organized by EXHIMACT and VERIFAIR. The concurrent vegan industry conference was separately organized at a different venue by World Vegan

Organization.

The exhibition aimed to bring brands, businesses and consumers under one roof in order to raise awareness and promote vegan lifestyle in India. It was the first international trade show on the plant-based industry in the country. Although a vegan diet is getting popularity in India and worldwide, the expo

was unable to attract as many visitors.

Themed “Wired for the Future”, SMF2019 showcased compelling insights impacting the business events industry.

Creating Meaningful Impact through a Robust Business Events Eco-system Business events are platforms created for knowledge exchange, continued conversations on collaboration and solutions development for industry challenges. They are also platforms where moments of serendipity and moments of legacy-making are engineered, said SACEOS President, Mr Aloysius Arlando, who urged fellow business counterparts to put into practice the key event takeaways when organising their events.

SMF2019 brought together nex tgeneration thinkers and disruptors in MICE and Industry verticals to uncover deep insights on building value through design and innovation. Tim Kobe, Founder & CEO, Eight Inc shared how successful design for human outcomes will deliver better business outcomes while Dr David De Cremer, Provost Chair, NUS and Author of Huawei: Leadership, culture, and connectivity shared Huawei’s success story. Following Singapore Tourism Board’s (STB) MOU with Alibaba Group in April to drive visitor arrivals and spending, SACEOS has signed an MOU with Alibaba Cloud (Singapore) Private Limited to explore collaborations on digital innovation for business events in Singapore. As part of the arrangement, SACEOS and Alibaba Cloud will explore joint workshops and seminars where participants can get hands-on exposure to Alibaba Cloud solutions, big data and AI technologies.

As China is a significant visitor-generating market for Singapore, SACEOS will also be working with STB and WeChat, one of the most widely used Chinese social media platforms that integrates instant messaging and social payment with over 1 billion m o n t h l y a c t i ve u s e r a cco u n t s. Th e collaboration aims to increase technology adoption to boost the overall experience for

Chinese MICE visitors in Singapore.

As part of the efforts to accelerate digital transformation and technology adoption in the MICE sector, SACEOS also signed an MOU with SGTech at SMF2019 to share information, cross-promote, foster collaboration and build a robust business events industry. Both parties will be working towards helping members improve their adoption of technology and digitally-enabled solutions, as well as facilitating interaction between the members in the two associations.

“We look forward to collaborating with high-impact technology companies to create more business value for both parties, help our relevant businesses in their digital transformation and spearhead greater success for Singapore’s MICE industry. The associations include Indonesia Exhibition Companies Association (IECA), Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (MACEOS), Philippine Association of Convention/Exhibition Organizers and Suppliers Inc. (PACEOS), and Thailand Incentive & Convention Association (TICA).

“As individual associations, our outreach and industry development efforts are often constrained. But when multiplied with regional parties and other associations beyond the MICE industries, our combined efforts will make a significant difference. We can collectively build a stronger, future-ready business events industry for the region,” said Mr Arlando.

Hosting high-profile events such as DPRKUSA Singapore Summit and the Bloomberg New Economy Forum last year has further raised the awareness of Singapore’s business e ve n t s i n d u s t r y a n d b o l s te re d o u r international reputation as a choice MICE destination. STB will continue to support SACEOS in the association’s endeavours to pursue projects and strategic partnerships that enhance Singapore’s MICE ecosystem and are of value to the local MICE industry.

An executive council member of IEEMA, he also serves as MD of Elektrolites. He talks about his plans for the upcoming Elecrama from trying to rope in US EV maker Tesla as a participant to fostering technological tie-ups for the country’s MSMEs in the electric space.

This Elecrama, we are focusing for making the event into an international platform by inviting exhibitors from 60

marketing methods. The big players can afford to go abroad and they have manufacturing bases in 40-60 countries, whereas, the small scale industry doesn’t have access. They would be able to get that access only if we manage to get exhibitors from abroad.

What kind of companies are you looking at?

Earlier, we were just focusing on selling Indian products. But now, people are looking at India to be the second place for manufacturing. So, we are focusing on bringing in technological partners for tieups. Instead of focusing on exporting our finished products, we are trying to bring in

We are not completely ready. We require so many charging stations. There is lot to be done. It will take at least five to seven years to create that infrastructure.

But by 2030, it is possible. We are just 1.3% of the overall electrical market in the world.

So, there is a chance to increase to 5%.

Last year, we had to move our venue from Bombay to Bangalore because every year it is growing by 25% in terms of the number of exhibitors and visitors. But even that fell short of space so we had to move to Noida last year to a space that’s almost 80,000 square metres. But on the first day itself, 70% of the space has been booked.

TFT : What is the intention or target of organizing a fair of this sort?

MM : The intention is to provide a friendly networking and business zonefor the buyers and the sellers along with displaying the changing trends, technology and fashion

TFT : What is the future of textile industry at present?

MM : The future of textile industry is vast. With a fashion designing course, the young generation can lead this industryto a brighter future along with having creative freedom and satisfaction. In this digital age, fashion enthusiasts, budding designers and even housewives can study fashion designing courses available online to create a career in this industry.

TFT : How do you think this exhibition can help the exhibitors? In what way can they expect a return on investment?

MM : The exhibitors are participating every year and the show is growing bigger with each edition which only shows that they are happy with the returns. The best way to describe would be that the show is organised with the purpose of every exhibitor getting good footfall and business. Networking in Sutraa is effortless as there is immense opportunity and varieties for participants.

However, we would love to have a strong technology which makes the communication and interaction in this show easier and helps

to develop more leads and connections.

TFT : According to you, how has technology impacted the trade show business?

MM : Nothing will replace face to face meetings or viewing-holding the products in real-time. Withrecent technologies, we can give details and reliable information and registrations can be quickly done. Hence, we have to sync with the trends and find a balance where the technology can help us to notch up.

TFT : Lastly, what will be your advice for organizing or sustaining a successful show?

MM : The success of any event depends on two factors. First, to understand the value of market and providing a suitable atmosphere to the stakeholders of the industry. We need to help our stakeholders to maximize their products in a better and efficient way.

TFT : Do you think that the Indian Fashion show will be able to develop Indian Economy gradually?

MM : Fashion show will also contribute to highlight the economic problem gradually, by attracting customer in their industry.

The Confederation Of West Bengal Trade Associations (CWBTA), the largest trade body of Eastern India is organising the two day (15th - 16th July 2019)"India Trade Mega Summit". The agenda of this Summit in Kolkata is to boost regional trade of Eastern India, around 500 delegates are attending the summit out of which 200 are from Bangladesh,Nepal, Bhutan and Thailand.

They are representing various bodies and Chamber of Commerce. India has many opportunities to do business with the traders to enhance the expor t and impor t possibilities of this country. The actual value of a trade show stand increases radically when you have well trained staff and whilst I understand that companies see this as an additional expense I would argue that it’s probably a bigger investment than all the additional extras you put on your stand.

Exhibiting is not like other forms of selling as it’s reactive and in our day to day business we organise and go to appointments whereas at a show we have no idea who is going to come on the stand, so we need to be better prepared.

I also say this because if you’re not, the visitor will spot this and has one of your competitors probably within 100 feet of your stand.

However, while trade shows are worthwhile, they are not easy. To get the most out of trade shows, exhibit marketers set measurable objectives, pick good shows, design effective exhibits, and more. Read on to discover the main elements of a successful trade show marketing program.

Many companies do all the right things when it comes to exhibiting and have a great stand, lots of freebies, multi marketing campaigns and great shiny new products but give little thought to the one thing that sells your product…YOUR PEOPLE! A lot of people say to me “but sure why do I need training…and it’s too expensive.” Well let me give you an example…I had a client at a show a few years ago who spend north of €20k with me and close to €75k overall and in talking to his staff it was really obvious that they were telesales people drafted in from the office to work the stand…they had no idea how to sell in an exhibition environment and in watching them from afar I could see them let visitors walk on and off the stand

You should be spending at least 10% of your overall budget having and training the right people. This is not a cost, it’s an investment because without it you will get less leads… less business and very possibly give your visitors a bad impression of your business.

FSSAI conducts 6th stakeholder forum on scientific food safety advances As an endeavour to promote latest advances in food safety and food security, the CII Confederation of Indian Industry)HUL (Hindustan Unilever Ltd) Initiative on Food Safety Sciences (CHIFSS) in partnership with FSSAI organised its sixth Stakeholder Forum on Scientific Advances in Food Safety and Food Security.

Given the triple challenges of food safety, food security and nutritional security faced by the country, there is an urgent need to drive improvements in efficiency and effectiveness of overall foodsystem.

However, the collaborations between the country’s apex regulator and the industry to strengthen science-based food safety capability in India are progressing rapidly.

The context of the forum was set by AlokDhawan, director, CSIR - Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, Lucknow. He outlined advanced scientific capabilities being built in the country to help food safety and food security for the nation.

During his talk, he also highlighted the critical importance of timely adoption of next-generation science based, risk-based, objective safety evaluation approaches, application of sensors and diagnostic techniques into regulatory frameworks, so that India can keep pace with developed world, whilst ensuring a great future for its farmers and food industry and the health of its vast population.

Dhawan emphasised the need to focus at the origin of food supply chain, viz, agriculture production end, which will help deliver safe foods to the consumers.

Highlighting the critical importance of next-generation risk assessment (NGRA) and its regulatory adoption, Paul Hepburn, SEAC programme director, Food Safety and Environmental Assurance Centre, Unilever, UK, showcased risk assessment tools and shared compelling case studies illustrating practical application of these principles to food safety decision-making.

Inspired Chemical Ecology (NICE) at National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bengaluru. Against the backdrop of India’s current and emerging agricultural and food security challenges, NICE is a promising new area of ecological science that depends on natural means of improving agricultural productivity, protect crops, and prevent food wastage.

Olsson presented interesting case studies where principles like push and pull were employed to ensure crop protection.

Rita Teaotia, chairperson, FSSAI, spoke of the scale of challenges faced by India where 1.3 billion population is vulnerable to both under nutrition and over nutrition whilst facing several food safety concerns.

Among others, she emphasised the need for partnerships and collaborations with all stakeholders to successfully address the complexities and challenges. She highlighted that food security and food safety, and therefore, a forum where both the subjects are deliberated through the lens of science was very much the need of the hour.

A Sivakumar, regulatory affairs director, Hindustan Unilever Limited, welcomed the audience to the event. He highlighted the need to institutionalise food safety and build capacity and capability, and the work done by CHIFSS so far in the area of mitigation of food-borne illness, microbiological food safety and need for risk-based approaches by coordinating with international and national experts to bring in best global practices.

As a part of the deliberations, a panel discussion on scientific advances in food safety and food security – How to integrate this into practice was conducted with domain experts who talked during their respec tive sessions, along with Dr DebabrataKanungo, chairman, FSSAI panel for pesticides and antibiotic residue; Satyanarayana K V, associate vice-president, Life Science Advisory Group, Sathguru Management Consultants, and Nimish Shah, director, partnership and advocacy, Hindustan Unilever, emphasised the criticality of leapfrogging country capability build in these newer areas off food safety and food security sciences, discussed some of the key challenges and way forward in adoption of new concepts and methods (like NGRA and NICE approaches).

Like wide-ranging issues, e.g., antimicrobial resistance, microbiome and pesticide residues in food. Kanungo shared his view that as a country, we should be proactive in adopting newer risk assessment approaches as only these will help in ensuring safe food for our vast population.

Also the need to include farm level safety in regulation was discussed. The day concluded with some thoughts on taking the recommendations ahead from each of the talks and panel discussion by scoping relevant pilot projects.

The Stakeholder Forum was attended by stakeholders, including eminent scientists, government officials and professionals from academia and industry, along with students from related fields.

ProWein Education Campaign during Food & Hotel India 2019 The ProWein Education Campaign will again be part of the Food & Hotel India trade fair (FHIN), to be held from September 18 — 20, 2019 at the Bombay Convention & Exhibition Centre in Mumbai. The campaign will offer FHIN trade visitors numerous tastings, workshops, discussion forums and presentations about wines and spirits.

CII identifies 31 products with high potential in export markets Industry body Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has identified 31 items with high potential for exports in a new study on boosting merchandise exports.

The identification of the products comes in the light of moderating export growth in the first quarter of 2019-20 as a result of global trade developments. Items in the list include women’s apparel, drugs, cyclic hydrocarbons, and furniture, among others.

“A targeted expor t strategy that identifies and boosts the right products is imperative for achieving double digit export growth. An export strategy assumes greater significance given a rapidly changing global trade landscape, shifting of global value chains and new free trade agreements, including mega trade agreements. CII has analyzed and identified select export items where India can become a leading exporter and offers recommendations for boosting such products,” said Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII. In a research paper, “Indian Exports: The Next Trajectory -- Mapping Products and Destinations”, CII has suggested a doublepronged approach of expanding domestic production and undertaking targeted promotion in top importing nations to build exports in these items.

To encourage domestic manufacturing, CII calls for strengthening industrial clusters with related infrastructure and port connectivity.

Adopting an integrated value-chain

approach for establishing global linkages is another important recommendation which would require interventions such as logistics and infrastructure support, skill development initiatives, and creating awareness for better understanding of GVCs, among others.

Trade and investment agreements and an infrastructure for promoting standards and certifications are needed, said CII. Incentives to encourage greater adoption of technology and innovation and boosting high-tech exports are also suggested.

A key recommendation is the need for developing an export strategy at the state level, based on states’ comparative advantages.

The paper employs a dual identification strategy of shortlisting top imports of the top importing nations.

These products at the HS 4-digit level are mapped with India’s current export p ro f i l e fo r d e te r m i n i n g i t s ex p o r t competitiveness to these top importing nations. Four criteria are considered - the total exported value of products, world

export shares, India’s rank as a top exporter in the top impor t items and India’s frequency as a top exporter among those top imports.

After applying these filters, 31 products are identified. In ‘Achievers’ where India has a strong footprint, the categories of women’s apparel and medicaments are top products. The ‘Aspirers’ category includes cyclic hydrocarbons and furniture, among others which have significant potential.

‘Products where capacities need to be enhanced ’ include telephone sets, electrical apparatus, motor cars and motor vehicles, etc.

For enhancing the market promotion of the select products, CII recommends that non-tariff barriers must be taken up with the respective Governments of destination countries.

Other suggestions include facilitating effective marketing strategies by setting up centres in top international markets, product promotion and integration of brand building initiatives with India’s commercial missions.

Given the uncer tain global trade climate, India’s merchandise exports fell by 1.7% in the first quarter of 2019-20 to $81 billion.

In 2018-19, exports expanded by 8.8% to cross $330 billion. India is facing headwinds from ongoing global trade conflicts at a time when some other countries are capitalizing on changing supply chains and the country must step up its export strategy to compete.

2020 Indian Auto Expo to Take Place from February 7 to 12!

The 15th edition of the Auto Expo will be held at the India Expo Mart in Greater Noida Asia’s largest auto show, the Auto Expo, is set to return next year. The 15th edition of the premiere auto show in the country will be held from February 7 to 12 at the India Expo Mart in Greater Noida. Meanwhile, the Auto Expo Component 2020 will be held at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi from February 6 to 9.

First held in 1985, the Auto Expo is jointly organised by Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). It is conducted every two years to showcase the latest innovations in the automotive space. The 14th Auto Expo, which was held last year, witnessed over 1 lakh visitors from more than 67 countries and participants from 20 countries. FSSAI Regulations for Labeling & ‘MEIS incentive rollback to Packaging not good for industry: CAIT The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) on Saturday expressed concern over the FSSAI Regulations proposed for Labelling and Pa c k a gi n g s ay i n g i t would pose difficulties fo r t h e M S M E Fo o d Industry catering to the requirements of more than 130 crore countrymen.

The proposed Regulations on Labelling and Packaging under disguise of “in a bid to encourage consumers make healthier food choices”, would make it mandatory to display red colour-coding on front-of-the-pack labels on packaged food products that have highfat, high-sugar and high-salt content levels. But B C Bhartia, National President of CAIT said if the proposals made in the regulation are implemented most of the Indian Food Products would come under the Red Category and the industry will die down. The New Labelling and Display regulations are ready for draft notification and the FSSAI is in the process of comprehensive revision of Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011 with the objective of having three different regulations dealing separately to packaging, labelling and Advertisement and claims requirements.

However, according to Bhartia no one has been able to understand the necessity of bringing such an adverse notification which will kill the Indian Food Industry. It is a matter of anxiety if such regulations are being forced on India by certain lobbyist and activist NGOs to disturb and damage the Indian industry, he said adding, “We can easily understand the far reaching implications this will have on food processing, employment, farmer economy and GDP. Food Industry has a large multiple effect and finally the common man will suffer.”

The idea of putting food products into colour coded categories appears to be totally unscientific and will be confusing to the consumer when a major percentage of food products will appears to be Red on the shelf, CAIT said in a statement issued here.

It is not understandable how a pre-fixed calorie value can be used to classify the products. In such a vast country like India how can anybody fix a single calorie value suitable for every person? Food intake and calorie consumption varies with age, lifestyle, climate, geography, working systems, materials available, food practices established from centuries etc. Moreover such a regulation will be discriminatory from region to region and with population demographics, CAIT added. It will also be most unfair for the more than 30 lakh micro, small and medium units in the country who will not be able to manage the complicated calculations for categorization of products but the a few dozen large / MNC Companies will be able to do so.

If the MSME food industry dies down there will be massive unemployment and it will also have an adverse impact on the farmer.

It is a matter of great worry that the Regulations are not scientific and are misguiding. “Further, what will happen to huge global market of Indian Food Products? Are we ready to damage our export performance? It is also surprising to thrust such a Regulations when a vast population in the country, particularly in the rural areas, are suffering from malnutrition. Naturally the consumer will suffer enormously for not getting the range of food products consumed by them. With most of the items marked Red in the market shelf, the house lady will be utterly confused what to feed to the family. This will hugely misguide her and develop a misconception in their mind about packaged food which is much more healthy than the food sold lose. Loose food continues to be sold as it is but packed good item will come under unwanted scanner,” Bhartia highlighted.

CAIT said if the Government is serious to develop food industry and MSME in the country it is necessary to withdraw such a draconian regulation.

Leading trade and industry bodies in the state have warned leaders in central and state governments that abrupt withdrawal of benefits to textile exporters from August 1 will hit the sector very hard, especially since the overall economy is facing a slowdown. They urge that the existing scheme should continue until an alternative plan, which is under consideration, is finalised.

Gujarat is one of the leading states in the sector.

“We have learnt that the government has decided to withdraw the Merchandise Export from India Scheme (MEIS). The Textile sector in Gujarat will face a severe and negative impact of this abrupt move. Its very existence will be threatened,” said a joint letter by the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry in India (ASSOCHAM) to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

MEIS, which replaced the Duty Drawback Scheme after the rollout of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), provides up to 4% rebate on exports. The World Trade Organization (WTO) has asked that such schemes be discontinued.

“GoI is considering ‘Rebate of State and Central Taxes and Levies’ (RoSCTL), in which state and central taxes will be refunded,” said Meena Kaviya, former chairperson of Textile Committee of GCCI. “However, it is yet to come into force and MEIS is being withdrawn. The move comes at a time when India is supposed to reap the benefits of the US’s trade war with other countries.”

“Textile exports are long-term contracts,” said Raju Shah, state chairman of CII, “and incentives play an important role in the determination of rates. Abrupt withdrawal will squeeze margins, which are anyways very low. Even complying with existing orders will be a loss-making proposition. We have requested the government to give us some time.”

Chintan Thaker, state co-chairman of FICCI said that exporters compete with peers from countries such as Bangladesh, Pakistan, Vietnam and Sri Lanka which have Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with major markets such as the US and UK. “While their goods are imported duty-free, Indian goods carry duties, putting us at a disadvantage of 10 to 11%, which is significant in a fiercely competitive market,” Thaker said.

India warrants an ecosystem that guarantees far stronger participation of aspiring women entrepreneurs by removing the hurdles on their path to business ventures, said the organisers of the Women Startup Summit in Kochi on August 01.

Gender sensitivity is essential to ensure inclusivity in heading or working with startups, according to speakers at the Conclave being hosted here by the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM).

Kerala IT Secretary M Sivasankar listed three major factors that are hindering the prospects of women entering entrepreneurship in a big way in the State.

The first was ‘social barriers’, where, say, ‘safety’ of girl students in hostels restricts their study hours in the campus.

Secondly, he had addressed the increasing need for women with reasonable professional experience (of five to ten years) heading ‘brown startups’. Thirdly, he explained that

Every decade or so, I try and purge through documents I have saved to one day put to use. Never know when you may need an old issue of Trade Show Week. While cleaning, I did run across a 1985 issue of Exhibitor Magazine. Lee Knight- founder & publisher prepared an editorial that spoke about predictions in the exhibit industry.

Lee’s insights have always been a step ahead of the curve and right on. Considering that this was written over 30 years ago, each of his predictions became a reality, and then some.

Many of his predictions were perceived as controversial at the time, but his insights guided us all in the right direction.

Prediction - Custom exhibit suppliers will expand their services to address trade show marketing beyond the structure alone.

“Custom exhibit companies were seeking to establish their preemptive positions with an evolving industry," says Lee Knight.

Fact- Today, most custom exhibit companies provide full trade show marketing services like lead management, booth staff t ra i n i n g, e ve n t m a n a g e m e n t , a n d international services as a basic service beyond their exhibit design and fabrication skills.

Prediction - Exhibit systems and portables will play a stronger role in the mix of exhibit design solutions. Exhibitors continued to believe in the power of trade shows, but now need to do more with less due to high costs and budget constraints.

Fact - At the time most all exhibit solutions were custom. Portable, exhibit systems, and fabric solutions, were now growing to be an economical solution for some of the shows exhibitors were attending. Today, all custom exhibit companies offer systems, fabric, and portables along with their custom designs.

Many exhibitors now purchase these directly.

Lo and behold, the largest exhibit company in North America today is Skyline Exhibits!

Prediction - Exhibitor education programs will play a stronger role than ever before. Exhibitors are looking for data and insights to increase results for their trade show investments.

Fact - Many custom exhibit companies and consultants began to conduct educational seminars to support their clients’ educational interests in trade show marketing. Today, many college marketing departments finally recognize the existence of trade show marketing as a part of the marketing mix. (Many still do not talk about it!)

to enhance exhibitor knowledge about trade show marketing.

Solutions like the Exhibitor Live trade show event, educational seminars to earn a CEM certification, and exhibit designer event/ award programs each offer direct solutions for exhibitors to better succeed at trade shows.

Prediction - Intelligent exhibit design will be a requirement for exhibit designers.

Exhibit design consciousness that was demanded in the computer industry will permeate to other industries. Exhibit firms will be faced with providing more creative options to a more enlightened and competitive exhibit buyer group. Exhibit design firms will begin to encourage their designers to attend more shows and see ‘what’s new’. Trends outside the exhibit world will influence exhibit design at a more rapid rate than ever before. Exhibit designer symposiums and college level degree programs will begin to unfold as well.

Fact - In 1997 EDPA created a three day Designer Symposium that was held for three years in different US cities. Exhibitor then formulated an expansion of this designer training in years that followed. Exhibitor also created exhibit design award programs to acknowledge excellence in exhibit design.

EDPA created an “Exhibit Designer of the Year” award that continues to this day. During this period, Bemidji State University offered an undergraduate degree program in exhibit design. FIT then followed to create a master’s degree in exhibit design. Both programs continue today and are strongly supported by industry suppliers, associations, and publications.

Prediction - With higher costs for trade show participation, will come a need for better attendance profiles provided by show organizers. Exhibiting companies will need to justify the costs required to participate and will need to provide intelligent and measurable results for their show selections and their target audience focus.

Fact - In 1985, few show organizers provided quality attendance data for their exhibitors to base trade show investment decisions. Today, attendance research is provided by most all show organizers and is an expected piece of data that is no longer as rare as hen’s teeth. Research companies like Exhibit Surveys, Inc. now help to make this easily doable for show organizers and/or associations.

Lee’s foresight and visions for the exhibit industry strongly helped to push all involved in the industry to do the right things, as well as to do things right for the sake of the industry. Lee Knight was awarded the EDPA Hazel Hays Award in 1990 and continues to

contribute his thoughts to this day.

Another Trend and Prediction that was slowly unfolding in the late 80’s was exhibitor participation in international trade show events. Companies like Octanorm saw this trend unfolding and created a select group of exhibit suppliers called OSPI (Octanorm Service Partners International). Hans Steiger and Han Bruder pushed for unity among exhibit suppliers (including US companies) to serve as trusted partners when exhibiting abroad.

Another organization that was also beginning to unfold with a similar mission was IFES (International Federation of Exposition Suppliers). In 1984, IFES was created with six country exhibit industry associations in Europe who joined forces to establish trade fair cooperation between exhibit suppliers when crossing borders. It was not until 1995 that the USA (EDPA/ Ingrid Boyd) joined IFES to be a part of a world community of exhibit associations. In 2012 IFES changed its by-laws to include exhibit supplier companies as well as the country associations as members. Their mission was to establish world cooperation and consistency at trade shows and fairs.

While Europe and the rest of the world freely participated in international trade fairs, the US was slower to do so since they were consumed, and very successful, with their trade shows in the USA. It was not until 2012 that US participation in international trade shows picked up speed to catch up with the rest of the world’s willingness to expand to exhibit overseas. Through this period, international companies frequently participated in US shows, and gained much experience with US trade show differences.

American exhibit suppliers are now getting the same experiences and confidence to do shows abroad and have caught up quickly.

In my book, Trade Shows from One Country to the Next, I review the venues, regulations, labour issues, exhibit design styles, and cultural differences when exhibiting in any of the 45 countries outlined.

No one person or company is the expert for the entire world market. The theme of the book...there is no right way, there is no wrong way, there is only a different way. Find and trust a partner to work with, understand and respect what is different, then you are on your way to exhibit success.

New trends in face to face marketing will continue to unfold. Keep your eyes on the crystal ball and keep an open mind to accept changes, and a willingness to act on them.

Surat to host 3-day diamond exhibition from August 3 The event will be inaugurated by Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya with State Health Minister KishorKanani.

In the past couple of months, around 400 diamond polishers working in different factories lost their jobs, while some factory owners reduced their production with the demand for polished diamond dipping in domestic and international markets.

To give a boost to the diamond industry that is facing rough weather, the Surat Diamond Association (SDA) will organise a three-day exhibition of loose diamond in Surat from August 3.

The SDA called for a meeting with the diamond manufacturers of Surat and with their consent, decided to organise the expo, which will be the second edition of the Carats Surat Diamond Expo.

The event will be inaugurated by Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya with State Health

Minister KishorKanani. The SDA members will carry out roadshows in different states and online bookings have started for the event.

SDA president Babubhai Gujarati said, “This year, the production of polished diamonds has fallen by 30 percent while trading activity is down by 25 per cent. Lakhs of people are associated with the industry and owners are struggling to run the business. We hope that the expo will help the industry.”

We did first such experiment in 2018 with 40 stalls and there were around 700 buyers from India and abroad. This year, we have increased to 70 stalls and we got good response from buyers (jewellery manufacturers) from India and abroad. Over 80 per cent of the 70 stalls are booked by those who participated in the exhibition in 2018,” Babubhai Gujarati said.

He added, “The expo provides a platform mostly to middle-class businessmen. The three-day exhibition will cost around Rs 55 lakh.”

To ensure security for the event, the SDA will take help from Surat police department and private security agencies. The venue of the exhibition will be under CCTV surveillance.

30 Indian textile firms participate in Colombo fair

About 30 Indian exhibitors displayed a variety of fabrics, made-ups, home textiles and blended yarn at the India International Textiles Expo (IITExpo) exhibition that opened in Colombo on July 29. The three-day event was organised by the Powerloom Development & Export Promotion Council (PDEXCIL) of India with support from the ministries of textiles and commerce and industry.

Suja K Menon, head of the economic wing at the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka said several Sri Lankan companies are investing in India in the textile sector, contributing to the growth of the Indian economy, according to Sri Lankan media reports.

PDEXCIL has been associated with Sri Lank a since 1998. There also exists a memorandum of understanding between PDEXCIL and the Sri Lanka Apparel Exporters Association (SLAEA), which was signed in Gujarat in June 2017.

FICCI Round-table on AI and ethics: Accountability, fairness, and non-discrimination “[The] State should not stop anyone from doing anything until and unless there is tangible harm. For instance, political parties generate most fake news in India. There’s no will to correct it. Therefore, we have the fake news problem. It [fake news] is not a technical problem,” said a participant at FICCI’s roundtable discussion on “Responsible AI and Framework”.

Before the discussion, Responsible AI: A Global Policy Framework , a book by International Technology Law Association (ITechLaw) was launched by Kavita Bhatia, as part of MeitY’s Digital Payment Division, in India. The book gives 8 discussion principles (8

principles and policy framework are available below) for the “responsible development, deployment, and use of artificial intelligence”.

Nikhil Narendran, partner at Trilegal, and SmritiParsheera, policy researcher at NIPFP – who are chapter leads of the Accountability chapter, and Fairness and Non-Discrimination chapter respectively – introduced key concepts of the book and sought feedback from the participants. The first draft is now open for public consultation and comments are invited till September 15, 2019.

Narendran explained that after this round of public consultation, the second edition

will be released in mid-2020. He told MediaNama that this book has been envisioned as a “living document” that will be continually updated to meet the demands of the society.

Bhatia briefed the participants about how the government was thinking about emerging technology. She focused on the government’s aim to convert India into a “knowledge-based economy”.

She mentioned the 4 co m m i t te e s, co n s t i t u t i n g industry and academia that the ministry had formed: on data and platforms, on identifying critical sectors that need focus, on skilling and reskilling of individuals required by an AI/

automation regime, and on cybersecurity.

Bhatia also spoke about the National Programme on AI that focuses on IPR, legal issues, platforms, and data. She said that the National Centre on AI would follow a hub and spoke model. 29 incubation centres have been established in education institutes along with 11 centres of excellence. These centres are associated with 150 start-ups, which have filed 56 IPRs, 10 of which have already been granted.

Messe Frankfurt opens window to the city Vogue Wedding Show Messe Frankfurt wants to make its trade fair activities more visible and transparent for passers-by on the east side of Hall 1. A competition carried out in 2017 with a view to creating additional restaurant units in the hall (approx. 18,000 m²) made it clear that only a strong design element would bring about a new and significant external impact.

The competition winners, Frankfurtbased architects Alexandra Geiseler and Bernd Gergull of geiselergergullarchitekten, proposed a “window to the city”, which captured the two restaurant units in a single striking frame. Work on implementing the design will commence when the summer break begins in July.

This will involve redesigning the overall east façade of Hall 1, which was built in 1989 together with the City Entrance based on designs by GermanAmerican architect Helmut Jahn. The screen-printed glass and sheet-metal elements of the existing façade will be replaced completely by clear glass panels. A large red frame extending over both hall levels will serve as a spatial element both within the hall and externally towards the city. This gives the extensive façade a new focal

brings fashion designers, jewellers under one roof

point whose distinctive alignment reinforces the overall impact. This frame also extends out from the façade, providing additional seating space on both levels.

Slowing global economic growth impacts exhibition industry worldwide, but overall positive outlook remains UFI has released the latest edition of its flagship Global Barometer research, which takes the pulse of the industry. One of the key findings is a weaker first half of 2019 in terms of revenue growth compared to 2018, but there is still an overall positive trend for the year in relation to revenue.

With regard to operating profit, 80% of companies maintained a good level of performance in 2018, and more than 40% of companies from all regions declared an increase of more than 10% compared to 2017. However, the prospects for 2019 are currently lower globally, in line with the worldwide slowdown of economic growth.

Results also indicate that the top business issue within the industry remains the “State of the national/regional economy” (selected by 24% of all respondents), ahead of “Competition within the industry” and “Global economic developments” (each selected by 19%).

The barometer also includes a section on the state of digital conversion within the industry. The results show a “Digitisation Implementation Index” of 27, indicating that the commitment towards digitisation is not wholly spread.

Size and scope This latest edition of UFI’s bi-annual industry survey was concluded in July 2019 and includes data from a record 322 companies in 57 countries and regions.

The study delivers outlooks and analysis for 16 countries and regions: Argentina (for the first time), Australia, Brazil, China, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Macau, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, Thailand, the UK and the US. In addition, four aggregated regional zones have been analysed.

Economic developments While a majority of companies in all regions – with the exception of Middle East/ Africa – expect an increase in gross turnover for the two halves of 2019 and the first half of 2020, the first half of 2019 appears to be weaker compared to recent years. However, current forecasts for the second half of 2019 and the first half of 2020 show a return to robust levels. Eight of the surveyed countries and regions have, for all three periods surveyed, a majority of companies declaring turnover increases. These are Australia, Brazil, Italy, Japan, South Africa, Thailand, the UK and the US. For the second half of 2019 and the first half of 2020, this is also the case for India, Indonesia, Germany, Macau and Russia.

Top business issues When asked about the most important issues for their business in the coming year, companies remain concerned about the following four topics: “State of the economy in home market” (24% in the current survey, down 1% compared to six months ago), “Competition within the industry” (19%, unchanged), “Global economic developments” (19%, down 1%) and “Internal challenges” (16%, up 1%).

Digitisation Results show that the majority of companies are responding to the accelerating process of digitisation within the exhibition industry. The “Digitisation Implementation Index”, which measures progress towards a state of “full digitisation”, is at 27 globally.

China, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, the UK and the US are identified as the exhibition markets that are currently most advanced in terms of digital transformation.

Fair organisers claimed that the stalls received hundreds of visitors. On Sunday the number of visitors soared. “The response of the customers was overwhelming. The fair provided an opportunity to the Thai traders to create awareness about their products among Indian traders,” said Lawrence Edward, Commercial Officer, Royal Thai Consulate General. The fair began at Club Crest in Phoenix Market City on Thursday. At least 35 leading companies from Thailand participated in the four-day event.

On day one, B2B meetings were held where officials of leading Thai brands interacted with Indian traders and tried to develop their business networks. In a bid to attract customers from Chennai towards Thai products, from August 2 to 4, an exhibition was organised at Phoenix Market City. Now marking its 11th anniversary, organizers say that there is still room to grow and enhance the annual exhibition.

“In the future, we will continue to perfect this platform to create even more opportunities for franchises, investments and start-ups, as well as SME business transformation, while helping SMEs and entrepreneurs in Macau to innovate business models and improve their brand operations,” said Irene Lau, president of the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM), during the event’s opening ceremony.

“Let us work together to create more business opportunities,” she added.

In addition, Lau drew attention to the fact that the Macao Franchise Expo was recognized by the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI) as an “UFI Approved Event” last November. It is the first franchising exhibition in the Greater China to receive this honor said Lau, and it serves as a sign of the event’s high d e gre e o f i n te r n a t i o n a l i s m a n d professionalism. The 2019 IELA Forum took place in Venice, Italy from June 24th-25th as the core of the IELA 2019 Congress. The new Forum format introduced in San Francisco proved already in the past that small groups, involving exchange and discussions, are effective tools for sharing, exploring and spearheading the emergence of new projects and personal growth.

KEYNOTES The first day was opened with #KEYNOTE 1“Waiting in a cross-cultural and globalised world” by Mario Pecheny. Here the message was clear: Shift your perspective. The Forum kick-off on the second day was #KEYNOTE 2“Unlocking Human Potential” by Sofia Allegra Crespi who asked the fundamental questions such as how can I adjust my skills to technology? And what is the future of my business?

Her concentration was on the Man-Machine relationship and the harmony to be sought in order to exploit the business advantage. In both speeches, the two academic speakers presented a unique approach to their subjects and provided new insights from the Social- and Neuroscience perspective, which opened our eyes regarding the understanding, motivation and possibilities to boost individual and team development.

THINK CAMPUS Moving from a product-focused to a customercentric perspective was the focus of this year’s THINK session. The discussion panel was comprised of members from the complete IELA customerchain, an original concept which was welcomed with intense interest by the members: #THINK like an Organiser with Laurent Noël, Comexposium, France. #THINK like an Exhibitor with Markus Metzmacher, ifm electronic gmbh, Germany #THINKlike a Venue Owner with Giacomo Lucchini, UFI, Operations and Services #THINKlike a Pavilion Organiser with Giovanni Bifulco, Italian Trade Agency, Italy Moderator with Florent Jarry, AMR International Limited, France So the stage was set! Our #Think Like An Exhibitor Markus Metzmacher summarised the role of the freight forwarder in a nutshell: as exhibitor, he defined his primary goal is to find “Someone who not just takes care of needs, but what comes with the needs”. It was then clear that the role to be adopted as a trusting partner evolves into that of a consultant in order to attain a successful result where the client is more than just happy. Seeing the situation from an organiser’s point of view, Laurent Noël, Comexposium, summed up the pre-show situation that we all know well and the challenging job we have on a daily basis. He pointed out that everything should be perfect from Day 1 of an event but usually this is not the case. Even more reason for us to step in

and show our true talent! This round of discussion essentially identified the importance of keeping the customer at the heart of our efforts and maintaining their needs in the forefront. Giovanni Bifulco, from the Italian Trade Agency, our pavilion organiser, stated the rule that applies when working in the exhibitions industry: “We need to keep up a level of quality as our customers expect consistency”.

It was then with great pleasure that IELA was reinforced in its chosen strategy by Giacomo Lucchini, UFI, representing the event venues, who named the four important areas to be addressed by freight forwarders which are expected from customers: Security, Health & Safety, Quality & Technology and Sustainability, addressing the challenge of how we can re-use the materials at work. All speakers followed by giving their consensus on the importance of compliancy on this subject.

The question of sharing data was also a major topic for discussion. Laurent Noël summed up the situation by saying “The platform we are sharing with our partners can improve the delivery of service …. At the end of the day we must improve the journey of our customers”.

The global association IELA can be proud of the hard work and progress achieved so far in all these major areas of concern highlighted during this session. The Health & Safety Guidelines are published and soon the Sustainability Guidelines will follow. The concept of Sustainability at next year’s congress confirms that IELA remains on the right track to fulfill the needs of customers and partners alike. The IELA Data Room project tackles how information-sharing can make our lives easier and that of our customers also! IELA continues to maintain and develop its pole position in the industry as a reference for quality service.

the delegates identifying the five main “magic” tools in the fight against stress. #STREAM 3:Reverse Mentoring: Keeping the boomers engaged and millennials committed with Mario Pecheny, was the focus of the brainstorming. Many participants were present and shared their experience on this matter with a view to understanding the generational gap which exists. How to appeal, involve and adapt through all generations involved facilitating an easy knowhow handover was the core of the discussion.

EXPLORATORY ZONE Transformational leaders can empower their team beyond immediate self-interest through influence, inspiration and encouragement. They are capable of elevating their colleagues’’ personal achievement goals and ideals beyond individual levels to that of the organisation and, most importantly, society itself. This was exactly IELA’s goal this year: To accompany the UNLOCKING of each and every delegate’s POTENTIAL in order to BOOST change with new ideas carried back to the office by every single participant.

The new EXPLORATORY ZONE gave our delegates the individual space to reflect on what makes us human, unique and essential.

All in all, this year the IELA FORUM catapulted us into a brainstorming exercise which investigated the means of recognising and understanding what employees want, what drives them and how managing emotions and talent at work should become business priority no.1.

We believe that adopting a culture of transformational change will nourish individual leadership potential within our organisation. This focus on human resources is crucial as a member of staff holds the key to transforming goals into reality.

Transformational leadership which fosters autonomy and challenging work is increasingly a key factor in job satisfaction and retention of talent, therefore key for IELA and its members: Recognising, understanding and managing emotions at work is critical for effective leadership THE HUMAN FACTOR: BOOSTING A CULTURE OF TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP Finding one’s own purpose, identifying the path and method as to how to bring your purpose into your own organisation are key to accelerating growth within team members and adding value to your business.

Venice was the perfect setting to focus on the HUMAN FACTOR and the particular subject of transformational leadership. Creating an environment in which a long-term culture of transformation could be nourished and then unfolded was our foremost goal.

We truly hope our delegates were enchanted by the Venice spirit and motivated to unlock their human potential among fellow colleagues!
