Renewable energy expo postponed Slowdown, subdued sentiment cited as reasons; event was slated to be held from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 this year
The ongoing slowdown in the economy, coupled with subdued activity in the renewable energy sector, has led to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) postponing its flagship expo RE-INVEST by a year to October 2020, according to people aware of the developments. The third RE-INVEST expo was originally slated to take place between October 31 and November 2, 2019. The government has not provided any reason for the postponement other than that it was due to “unavoidable circumstances”. “The 3rd Global RE-INVEST Renewable Energy Investors Meet & Expo, organised by MNRE has been postponed due to certain unavoidable circumstances, and is now being scheduled for October 2020,” the event’s website said.
“The real reason behind the postponement is that the government does not want to host an event on renewable energy at a time when the industry is doing so badly and when there is an economic slowdown,” an invitee to the event, aware of the decision process in the government, said on the
condition of anonymity. “There is a lot of discontent in the industry and they decided that it would be better to hold the event later.” The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) did not comment on the postponement when contacted by The Hindu. This is not the first time the expo has been postponed. The
second edition of RE-INVEST, originally slated to take place in February 2016, was postponed five times before it finally took place in October 2018. “ The last RE-INVEST was postponed because the targets set in the first RE-INVEST were not met, and so they kept postponing it until the targets were closer,” the CEO of a large solar company, which is a regular attendee of the RE-INVEST events, said. “This time as well, none of the targets has been met.” The Centre had in its first term set a target of 175 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022. With just about three years left, the country has achieved only about 81 GW, or 46% of the target, according to MNRE data as ofJuly 31, 2019. Within this, the solar sector has achieved only 30% of its 100 GW target. The wind sector has achieved 36.8 GW of capacity.
FICCI highlights opportunities for AI in healthcare Second edition of Industry 4.0 Summit organized by Gujarat State Council of FICCI on the theme ‘Improving Competitiveness in Manufacturing Using AI & IoT’ Adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) offer huge opportunities in healthcare and manufacturing sectors, an official from industry body NASSCOM (National Association of Software and Services Companies) said at the second edition of Industry 4.0 Summit organized by Gujarat State Council of FICCI on the theme ‘Improving Competitiveness in Manufacturing Using AI & IoT’ on 12th September. Delivering the inaugural address, former FICCI president Pankaj Patel said that technology is advancing at an unimaginable pace, but stressed that adoption of latest technology is a must to become globally competitive. Pankaj Patel, who is also chairman of pharma major Zydus Cadila, said that technology has made it possible for them to process and make use of large amounts of data that was earlier lying unused in notebooks or in computer files. “The data processing by use of technology will be very important to make our lives better. Lot of diseases can be cured. There are huge opportunities for use of technology in pharmaceutical and healthcare,” he stressed. In his remarks, Sunil Parekh, Co-Chairman FICCI Gujarat State Council said that Artificial Intelligence is poised to be become even bigger than Information Technology. “AI will be much more pervasive and even more of value addition than IT. We are on the cusp of a civilizational change. The way we work, we travel, we interact has changed due to IT, but AI will change it in a much deeper and
October 2019
more intelligent way,” he said. Sunil Parekh said that adoption of AI and IoT is high in pharmaceutical and equipment manufacturing sectors in Gujarat. Speaking at the Summit, Sanjeev Malhotra, Head NASSCOM – Centre of Excellence, said “Healthcare and manufacturing are the two most important domains. Looking at our population, we will never be able to produce as many doctors. The only answer is technology. Similar is the case with manufacturing. These are the two areas where technology can make maximum difference. NASSCOM is putting a lot of focus to take technology to end users and to show how it can solve problems.” Incidentally, NASSCOM launched its first Centre of Excellence in Gujarat just a day earlier. The Centre will function at IIT Gandhinagar, and support the start-up ecosystem. “New technologies are there. The Centre of
Excellence will support start-ups and work with them on putting to use the home grown technologies for betterment of industry,” he said. In response to a question, Malhotra said that Gujarat is the most advanced state when it comes to tech adoption with medium and large sized units open to adopt technology solutions. The Summit was also addressed by Sameer Garde, president of CISCO in India and SAARC, Prasanna Iyengar, Product Head – Connected Machines, Robert Bosch Engineering & Business Solutions, Bhupendra Bhate, CIO at L&T Technology Services, and Dr. Prashant Sharma, President – Manufacturing, Zydus Healthcare, among others. Separate panel discussions on academia and startups & industry were also organized as a part of the Summit. Later, six mature startups across verticals took part in a startups pitching session.

“Exhibiting at shows is not about doing everything right, it`s about doing the right things right!” “Stephan Murtagh, The Exhibition Guy – Author of “Before You Hit The Venue”, gets up close and personal with TFT in anE xclusive one on one. He shares his thoughts about the changes he’s witnessed in the Exhibition Industry and where he believes changes are to be made.” TFT –Greetings, Stephan! Hope you are doing well?Tell us about your early years. What activities and habits are a part of your daily routine? SM : Yes doing really well and loving the TFT so keep up the great work. Well for me my early years were always about striving to be successful at what I do both in business and in life. From selling Christmas trees on the side of the road through to being a postman for Microsoft campuses in Dublin it was always about just working hard but enjoying it. Born and bred in Dublin, Ireland and very proud to be Irish and see how our small country can be world class at things. For me it was and is always about people. Building relationships with people that would be lasting and enjoyable. Having now been in the Exhibition Industry for the past 25 years, it is the one thing I love about what we do…Being face to face with people and that’s what Exhibitions are all about. On a personal note, my passions are My Family, Reading 2-3 books per week! (Business Books and Sports- In particular Rugby!) and just helping people be an even better version of themselves. My daily routines involve creating new ideas that will help companies and I do this through face to face meetings, webinars and LinkedIn…I am always looking for new and creative ways to add value to people’s lives. TFT : What inspired or encouraged you to write a book like “Before You Hit The Venue”? Tell us about your career and your journey into the world of Trade Fairs? SM : Having sold Exhibition space for 20+ years, it always frustrated me when companies didn’t do as well from shows as they had hoped and to be honest very often blamed the Organisers for a bad show(Sometimes they were right) but a lot of the time it was down to the Exhibitor just arriving at an Exhibition without a plan or having any real tangible objectives and then just “throw” together a stand and hope it worked. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work if you approach it that way. As we say to all our clients, if you
October 2019
go into battle you need a plan! Exhibitions are no different. I wrote the book to really help people and companies see that if they put this work in beforehand, they would reap great and much better results from exhibiting. It is just a simple little book that focusses on what you need to do so as you are successful when you exhibit. Ah well for me my journey into the Exhibition world was more about a chance meeting with someone 25 years ago and not knowing anything about Exhibitions, I decided to take the plunge into the industry as always love a challenge. I can honestly say it was the best business decision in my life as I absolutely love Exhibitions and the real power that we have as an industry and how we can help our client’s businesses grow and be a small part of that success. It absolutely motivates me to see companies do well from Exhibitions…For a young person, it is a career I would highly recommend in Exhibitions as you are part of not only your own success but also other peoples. TFT : How is the trade fair industry in Ireland? What difference do you see in terms of growth and quality? SM : The Trade Fair sector in Ireland is good but as a small country it can be challenging as we don’t have the economies of scale that larger countries do in terms of putting shows on at more affordable levels. We also only have a limited number of quality venues and this can be really challenging as the costs for these venues are very high. Our nearest neighbour, the UK, have much greater opportunities on a scale level and Ryanair being so cheap, Irish companies can often visit a show in the UK before they go to an Irish one and I find this disappointing but also totally understandable. Having said that, in Ireland we have a lot to offer the visitors to shows in our beautiful country, so we need to package this better to sell to International companies. In reality the fundamental difference with Ireland and abroad is the cost to put shows on here. As a dynamic economy we are changing this, and many big international conferences
– The Exhibition Guy, Stephan Murtagh are locating in Ireland as they see what can be achieved here with our skilled workforce and amenities being developed so actually there are some negatives, but we are definitely going in the right direction. TFT : How did you end up getting known as ‘The Exhibition Guy’? SM : Well, that is an interesting question! For many years (20!) I sold Exhibition space at shows and every time I would make a call, the receptionist would shout across to the person I was looking to speak to and say “…That Exhibition Guy is on the phone again….” I always found this amusing and it was really a natural name for our company as we are all about exhibitions. It’s a name that really has started to get traction globally and just says what we do. Its funny I go to Exhibitions all over the world and people tap me on the shoulder and say… Are you The Exhibition Guy…? Of course, I am always delighted! I think it`s getting to the stage now where people don’t even know my real name Stephan but just call me The Exhibition Guy…I am totally ok with that! Maybe I will get it changed on my passport! TFT : As an Exhibition Thought Leader what questions do you get asked the most and what are your suggestions? SM : Interesting question, for me I always get asked about how to really sell at exhibitions and stand design. As regards the selling at Exhibitions…Companies tend to fall down at the selling piece by not remembering the golden rule…”People come to Exhibitions to buy not to be sold” – The way you approach selling at exhibitions is by softly softly approach…Asking lots of open questions and getting your visitor to talk. Engaging with visitors in a more friendly not more salesy way. Finding out about them is the sure-fire way to succeed at sales. I see Exhibitors talking “AT” their visitors…You need to talk “WITH” your visitors. As for the stand design, it’s about keeping the stand nice and simple…Not too many things on the stand, making it comfortable for visitors to walk on and really engage. You need to 1. Keep 60% of the floorspace free for visitor access 2. Make your message on the walls/graphics – visible and readable from 15-20ft away and 3. Use strong colours that catch the eye. TFT : What is that one quality Exhibitors need to change for optimum trade fair success? SM : Stop sitting down on the stand reading your newspaper or texting your mates! –

Stand Up and REALLY ENGAGE with your audience! TFT : Tell us about ‘Your Sales Coach’? SM : Your Sales Coach is a sister company of The Exhibition Guy and this focusses on training people how to sell and make sales plans, target and forecasting. It’s not specifically for Exhibitions but brings the sales skills we have learned over the past 25 years to other industries. We coach 28 new entrepreneurs each month on how to sell (not necessarily for exhibitions) but general business. TFT : You were recently approached by IEIA for the Open Seminar. Can you tell us about your experience? SM : Yes, it was a real honour to be approached to do a webinar for the IEIA and really enjoyed working with Nidhi and the team in IEIA on it. It was a webinar for GED19 where we looked at how the industry is and the developments in the industry that we all need to be aware of and how we can develop our industry to allow for these changes. Exhibitors in this day and age are becoming more demanding and rightly so. We as an industry need to be at the forefront of delivering the change that will make them reexhibit every year.
putting on shows is a licence to print money! Unfortunately, some of these companies don’t do shows right and they give everyone else a bad name. This is not solely an Indian thing, it’s a global problem but with the size of your market, you probably see this more than most. TFT : Life in the Trade Fair Industry can be hard. What is that one mantra you live by to overcome difficulties and obstacles? SM : An old expression I like to think of when times are tough is “They say that the last thing to grow on a tree is the fruit” sometimes working for yourself can be hard but you have to persevere and have real belief. At The Exhibition Guy we absolutely believe in what we do because it adds value to Exhibitors (They do better) and Organisers (They get more rebooking of exhibitors) by working with us. That’s BELIEF! TFT : What will be your advice for a successful and sustainable trade show? SM : Focus on what your visitors want…Not what your exhibitors want. If your visitors are
happy then your Exhibitors will be. It doesn’t work the other way around! TFT : What are your future plans?Any future events or conferenceswhere people can see you talk as a Speaker? SM : Well for me it’s to do more work with Exhibition Organisers in India and UAE and deliver more courses that will help both organisers and Exhibitors. I have just developed an online course for Exhibitors that is being launched later today that will really help them do better from Exhibitions and can be a costeffective alternative to me being there in person. I am also looking at strategic partnerships with Exhibition industry companies where we can add value with joint offerings. Spend more time in India! In fact, I am delivering a multi city “7 Steps Masterclass Session” during early December, in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore that I am really looking forward to. It’s with a pretty big name in the industry so really looking forward to that and going back to India! Hopefully I will get to meet some of you guys when I am there!
TFT : Kindly tell our readers about the Exhibition Masterclass course? SM : The 7 Steps to Exhibition Success” focuses on the 7 key areas you need to consider before you exhibit at any show. We have delivered this course to in excess of 2,000 companies and the real benefit for them is they walk away knowing exactly what they have to do. This takes a lot of stress away from them so they can concentrate on exactly what they want to achieve at the show. It covers: 1. Planning for Exhibition Success 2. Setting Your 3 Key Objectives 3. Pre-Show Marketing Strategy 4. Delivering Results with The Right Team 5. Effective Stand Design That Works 6. Creating A “WOW” with your visitors 7. The Post Show Follow Up Strategy. TFT : Where do you see India when it comes to Trade Fairs? Can you share with us your perspective on the shortcomings or plus points of the Industry here? SM : I think the Indian market is becoming more and more powerful, particularly as your government seem to increase their spend on the sector and your venues become even more high tech. You also have an incredibly skilled workforce on the digital side, and this is a huge advantage as digital promotion becomes even more important for show promotion. You also have such a big population, and this offers many many more visitors to shows. On the plus points, because your country is so vast and cultures are slightly different across different regions, your organisers have the opportunity of doing the same shows but in different regions, we don’t have that scalability in Ireland. On the shortcomings side, its hard to say but I think the competition in your market is very diverse. There are many organisers who think

TFT : What is the role of Tourism in the economy of Odisha? V.K.D : As we know, the economy of a state or a country depends on various income generating productive activities. These activities taken together constitute the structure of an economy which can be divided into three sectors. These are primary, secondary and tertiary sector. In our society, most of the people are engaged in farming, while some others are employed in other two sectors. Services sector consists of different kinds of services including banking and insurance, trade and commerce, transport and communication as well as tourism and hotel industry. Among these, sub sectors, Tourism has a special place and it is better known for its employment potential. TFT : Being a sensitive coastal region, how has the recent Cyclone hit affected Odisha tourism? V.K.D : Odisha's preparedness, efficient earlywarning of cyclone, timely action and wellplanned large scale evacuation strategies helped millions of people move safely into nearly cyclonic shelter, thereby saving their lives. However, the month after the cyclone, the state is still struggling to get back to normal. Tourism definitely gets affected due to natural catastrophies.

India sees $1 billion gem, jewellery export opportunity as US hikes duty on China The industry can flourish if the government provides the right impetus, said GJEPC’s Colin Shah Seeking to make gains of the US-China trade war, India has set a target to increase its gem and jewellery exports to the former by $1 billion to $11 billion. The US sources about $2 billion worth of diamond jewellery from China annually. Intensifying the ongoing trade war, earlier this month, the US increased the duty on jewellery imported from China to 20.5 per cent from 15.5 per cent, while retaining dut y on I ndian jeweller y shipments at 5.5 per cent. In a bid to take advantage of the opportunity, the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) had organised a special seller’s meet for the US companies for the first time ever. Given the good response, GJEPC plans to organise separate buyers meet for diamond, gold and colour gemstones jewellers. “This is a good opportunity for India to grab some market share, but it should also
focus on quality and design rather than gaining volume,” said Trish Roberson of Roberson Fine Jewellery, who was part of 23-member US buyers group. However, Roberson is cautious in stocking up new design, as she expects the economy to slowdown closer to election year and the demand to taper down. Lauren Barringer, Senior Buyer, Ben Bridge, said that the company has recently launched a new brand designs, which were sourced completely from India, and was looking to source gemstones from Jaipur, after the social unrest in Hong Kong. Ben Bridge sells high-end jewellery priced from $1000 to $10,000. Exports down However, gems and jewellery exports continued it’s down trend, registering a fall of 14 per cent in August to $2.84 billion against $3.32 billion logged in same period last year. In first five months of this fiscal, the
overall exports were down nine per cent to $15.33 billion ($16.84 billion) while in rupee terms it declined 6 per cent to Rs 1.07 lakh crore (Rs 1.14 lakh crore). The hike in import duty on cut and polished diamond to 7.5 per cent from 2.5 per cent in the Budget has impacted gem and jewellery exports, as the industry has to pay high duty to bring back the consignments that have been rejected. Import duty on gold was also hiked to 12.5 per cent from 10 per cent. Colin Shah, Vice-President, GJEPC, said that the industry can flourish if the government provides the right impetus and grab the opportunity thrown open by the US and China trade war.
Hong Kong unrest is worrying India’s Jewellery sector n Shipments
of gems and jewellery to Hong Kong, India’s biggest market, have declined 6.6% from a year earlier to $3.2 billion in the first four months of the year that started in April n The fall in export could deepen if protests in Hong Kong continue, GJEPC executive director Sabyasachi Ray said Escalating protests in Hong Kong have jewellers in India worried. Shipments of gems and jewellery to Hong Kong, India’s biggest market, have declined 6.6% from a year earlier to $3.2 billion in the first four months of the year that started in April, according to the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council. The fall could deepen if protests in Hong Kong continue, Sabyasachi Ray, executive director at the trade ministry-backed group, said on September 03. Shipments to Hong Kong, which comprised almost a third of India’s gems and jewellery exports, fell about 17% to $11.1 billion in the last fiscal year as the protracted trade war between the US and China sapped demand. The slide also comes amid a wider slowdown in global demand that saw De Beers offer almost unprecedented flexibility, allowing buyers to reject more diamonds at a sale. If the unrest in Hong Kong “affects the flow of the buyers and the flow of trade, then the trend of these declining exports will increase," Ray said in an interview. Hong Kong acts as a conduit for goods to China, both for raw materials as well as finished goods, and the whole chain will suffer if the protests

continue, he said. The protests in Hong Kong began almost three months ago, when hundreds of thousands of people turned out to oppose the government ’s proposal to allow extraditions to mainland China. The unrest has seen demonstrators hurl scores of petrol bombs and police respond with tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets. On September 04, Hong Kong’s leader, Carrie Lam, formally withdrew legislation to allow extraditions to China, a political retreat that may help ease — but not end — the unrest in the Asian financial hub. In addition to the demand seeking scrapping of the bill, the protesters have also called for an independent inquiry into police violence, an amnesty for those who have been arrested and universal suffrage. Continued unrest could raise the possibility of a recession in Hong Kong, whose economy was already under pressure from the US-China trade war. It could also hurt the city’s retail jewellery sales as the number of tourists from mainland China slumps and gold prices surge, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Jewellery fair A drop in the number of people attending
The protests and the trade war have raised concerns about the September Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair, slated for 16 to 22 September. a key trade fair in Hong Kong later this month following advisories against travel to the city could further weaken India’s exports, Ray said. The protests and the trade war have raised concerns about the September Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair, slated for 16 to 22 September. Russian diamond producer Alrosa PJSC Director Evgeny Agureev said last month that geopolitical tensions had raised concerns on the “efficiency" of the event. An email and calls to the organizers of the Hong Kong trade fair weren’t immediately answered. A September 02 update on its website said the show will be held as scheduled. About 100 exhibitors have paid to participate at the fair’s Indian Pavilion this year and “we are still in talks with the organizers to compensate exhibitors if some people may not be able to go there," Ray said.

Since its inception in 2002, FoodTec India and the concurrent trade fairs have seen a double-digit growth year-on-year, in terms of exhibitors, visitors and exhibition space, generating interest among suppliers for food and drink industry in the Indian sub-continent, thereby addressing the needs of the business owner, product manager, production line and R&D division. This year, the show had 48% international participation from over 30 countries, including China, France, Italy, The Netherlands and Turkey. “The USP of the show has always been the perfect mix of buyers from India and SAARC countries, said AshwaniPande, managing director, Koelnmesse YA Tradefair. The exhibition was actively supported and promoted by the Institute of Packaging Machinery Manufacturers of India (IPMMI) and
The 14th edition of the show was held at PragatiMaidan, New Delhi, from 13 to 15 September 2019 Indian Flexible Packaging & Folding Carton Manufacturers Association (IFCA). Pande said food processing is an important link between agriculture sector and the consumers. “Importance of logistics and supply chain management is increasing at the global level, especially in food processing. Policymakers have identified food processing as a key sector which will increase growth in sectors like manufacturing, packaging, supply chain and transportation,” he added. According to the organisers, the Indian food processing sector is poised to attract USD 33-billion of investments and generate employment of 9-million person days by the year 2024.
According to the data provided by the Department of Industrial Policies and Promotion (DIPP), the food processing sector in India has received around USD 7.54-billion worth of foreign direct investment (FDI) during the period April 2000-March 2017. The FDI inflow into the sector stood at USD 904.90-million during 2017-18. The food processing sector is annually seeing a growth of more than 11%. The government of India aims to boost growth in the food processing sector by leveraging reforms such as 100% foreign direct investment (FDI) in marketing of food products and various incentives at central and state government level along with a strong focus on supply chain infrastructure.
India To Host Dubai-Like Shopping Festival To Boost Exports But We Need To Strategise Well To Make It Successful
A large-scale shopping festival will be held in India on the lines of the immensely popular Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF), aimed at boosting exports. It will be held in four major Indian cities and attract shoppers from India as well as abroad. The announcement was made by India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who said that it’s part of a $600 billion economic booster to help exports. The consumers, producers and sellers are likely to be brought under one roof, allowing transparent and easy access to all products. "India will host an annual mega shopping festival like the one held in Dubai in four cities," she said. However, the theme of the festival in each city will be different and span across sectors such as gems and jewellery, yoga, textiles, tourism and leather. "It will happen by March 2020," said Sitharaman. The four cities are yet to be
October 2019
finalised by the Ministry of Commerce. This is in a bid to benefit the small and medium enterprises in the export sector. To boost exports further, she said, artisans in the space of handicrafts and textiles will be on-boarded on the government's e-commerce platform. "Mass on-boarding of artisans will happen across India," said Sitharaman adding it will be done in partnership with the Textile Ministry. Dubai Shopping Festival has emerged as the go-to venue for mega discounts and for a wide range of products being made available at the given destinations. Over the course of its 24 year journey so far, it has gained much prominence among shoppers around the world as they visit in large numbers every year. India has a great opportunity to make a mark with this initiative as the country can offer products at a comparatively cheaper rate. India’s arts, cultures and cuisines have long been an attraction for international tourists and counting on these aspects in a way that they meet the needs of the festival as well as helps in drawing larger visitors will help see it sail through successfully. The Dubai Shopping Festival, for instance, is much more than just shopping. It’s a
cultural extravaganza of sorts, where cuisine and fireworks are major attractions. India already has several large and smallscale festivals which happen at numerous venues such as the PragatiMaidan in the national capital but most of them have only managed to come as far as they have so far. The mega shopping festival, announced by the country’s finance minister, must break this ice and strategize well with consultations with industry bodies, experts as well as practitioners and cultural entrepreneurs. It should look at successful side-events at programmes such as the Jaipur Literature Festival or Kochi Biennale or, of more recent origin, the Serendipity Arts Festival, for inspiration and for understanding what leads to the success of such initiatives. Being caught in red-tapism and following an outdated style of programming will do little good in reality. Shopping Festival is a good inspiration for one to aim for but anybody who has been there will tell you how smartly it is planned to attract such huge number of visitors. #VisitDubai has set a benchmark in drawing tourists through new age and digital media techniques whereas Incredible India campaign hasn't yet realised its full potential. Therefore, a lot clearly remains to be done.

Key factors are the demand for new and competitively priced product, and added value private sector offerings such as discount vouchers,” Nooch said.

Argentina actively woos India for investment in lithium assets Offers duty-free import of capital goods, accelerated depreciation So keen is Argentina’s Ambassador Daniel Chuburu on India investing in his country’s lithium resources, that he spent the entire day at a conference on e-mobility, organised in Chennai by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Later, asked about his tarry, Chuburusaid that he had attended many similar e-mobility conferences in India. His pitch to India, made in a presentation at the conference, is simple: “Argentina is getting into mining, notably, mining of lithium; India is invited to participate.” ‘Where is India?’ The Chinese, the Americans, the Japanese, the Canadians and the French have already put their foot onto the Argentine mines; where is India? This is the question the ambassador has been asking. His efforts are seeing some results. Later this year, an Indian delegation, comprising members from the industry and the government, is set to visit Argentina to explore opportunities in mining lithium. On offer is a host of incentives, including dut y-free impor t of capital goods and accelerated depreciation. “We are very keen to work with the Indian industry for the production of lithium,” he said. Argentina, the ambassador said, was ranked third among nine lithiumproducing countries in the world. Today, it produces 38,000 tonnes of Lithium Carbonate Equivalent (LCE) from two mines, but a massive expansion is on the cards, so that the production increases to 290,000 tonnes by 2023. Lithium deposits occur in two forms — in salt waters under salt flats called ‘salars’ (similar to India’s Rann of Kutch) and in the form of crystals trapped in igneous pegmatite rocks. Argentina has 23 salar projects (two in operation,

India's growth 'much weaker' than expected: IMF
An Indian delegation comprising members from the industry and the government is set to visit Argentina later this year to explore lithium mining opportunities one under construction and the others in advanced feasibility stage), and six 40 pegmatite exploration projects. Its ‘inferred reserves’ are estimated at 21.2 million tonnes of LCE. Argentina is a mineral-rich country, like its neighbours Chile and Bolivia, and the three countries are sometimes referred to as ABC of lithium, or ‘lithium triangle’. But while Chile and Bolivia have vibrant mining industry, Argentina “is getting into mining” (only now). Asked why a mineral-rich country such as Argentina has been lagging in mining, he said the countr y has been more focussed on agriculture. “Argentina has a population of 45 million, but it produces food for 500 million people,” said Chuburu, and added that despite the economic problems that the country is facing, he wants India to have a positive perception of Argentina.
India's economic growth is ‘much weaker’ than expected, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which attributed that to corporate and environmental regulatory uncertainty and weaknesses in some non-banking financial companies. Spokesman Gerry Rice said IMF will monitor India’s situation and present an update in its World Economic Outlook. The risks to the outlook are tilted to the downside, he said in a press briefing. In July, IMF had projected a slower growth rate for India in 2019 and 2020, a downward revision of 0.3 per cent for both the years, saying its gross domestic product (GDP) will now grow respectively at the rate of 7 and 7.2 per cent reflecting a weaker-thanexpected outlook for domestic demand. However, India will still be the fastest-growing major economy of the world and much ahead of China, it had said.

Was that the last IAA at Messe Frankfurt? Is the Frankfurt Motor Show really outdated or is it still a strong proposition for many? The Frankfurt Motor Show's future in its current form is reportedly being questioned by traditional vehicle manufacturer participants - many of whom reduced their IAA spending budgets this year or chose not to attend at all. A report in a German newspaper suggests that there is considerable criticism from manufacturers of both the format and venue for Europe's biggest car show. The report also said that the show's future will be discussed by organiser VDA and representatives of vehicle manufacturers at a meeting this
October 2019
week. According to newspaper the number of IAA exhibitors fell this year by 20% to around 800 and exhibition space decreased by 16% to 168,000 square meters. Many vehicle manufacturers are slashing car show marketing budgets and preferring to create their own events instead. There are also suggestions that the format of the event with the traditional exhibition stand is increasingly outdated, with future mobility trends and advanced technologies becoming increasingly more important than the car models themselves. However, the report also noted that the IAA exhibition organisers pointed to the
advantages of Messe Frankfurt's show location, large grounds and good transport links as important factors in its favour. The report also said that other locations in Germany for a future 'mobility event' could also be considered.

Experiential: An Old Concept Revisited For more than four decades, Larry Kulchawik has been working in the trade show industry, specializing in international trade show marketing. Now, as principal of Larry Kulchawik Consulting, he is responsible for providing consultative advice to trade show exhibitors and suppliers for international exhibiting.
I
had a recent discussion with colleagues from Japan and Germany. The discussion was about exhibit design trends. Both felt strongly about the concept of creating a visitor experience within a tradeshow environment. At that moment it dawned on me how this “experiential” craze has gone global. The power of a positive experience to encourage sales has also been a focus of attention within retail stores. The shift to buying on Amazon (and other online e-tailers) has pushed retailers to look at new ways to retain buyer interest and loyalty and keep them willing to visit the stores. It is said that 80 percent of retail purchases will continue to occur in the stores thru 2020. As in retail, new experiential concepts will unfold in tradeshow design and the Amazons will continue to try and change our habits regarding the buying experience. In 2004, a group from EDPA (including myself) were looking at universities interested in implementing a degree program in exhibit design. We spoke with Auburn University in Montgomery, Alabama; UNLV in Las Vegas; and Drexel University in Philadelphia. While at Drexel we walked across the street and wandered into Wanamaker’s (now Macy’s). Wanamaker’s was one of the first department stores in the U.S. This department store with entertainment concept was a ground-breaking shift in the shopping experience. Owner John Wanamaker had wanted to create an attraction to bring visitors to the store. He felt strongly that a musical experience would put buyers in a positive mood and they’d enjoy the music and shop with a smile. After the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, he purchased a 2,500 pound bronze

sculpture of an eagle, and a huge pipe organ with 10,000 pipes. He had purchased an abandoned Pennsylvania Railroad depot in 1876 and retrofit it to incorporate the eagle and the organ, and created a department store with a unique attraction as the Grand Depot became the Wanamaker Building. The Grand Court quickly became a Philadelphia favourite, highlighted by the Wanamaker Eagle and the Wanamaker Grand Court Organ. People visited in droves from throughout the nation. Among other things of note, the Grand Court has been featured in many major motion pictures. The tag line “Meet me by the Eagle” became huge in Philadelphia. Wanamaker had changed the entire nature of
the shopping experience. Many retail stores across the nation then picked up on the “Wanamaker” idea, (playing music in the store) but no one came close to the grand investment of building in a famous pipe organ into their store to attract shoppers and create a shopping “experience.” Subliminally, music soothes one’s soul and changes one’s feelings. People buy from people they like within an environment they feel good about. This environmental experience we create to do this matters and holds true to a point if we are just shopping, but internet shoppers really don’t care about the emotional experience when buying a known commodity like paper clips, underwear, toothpaste or an airline ticket. I believe that human interaction and a pleasant environment does matter when buying personal items like clothing, specialty food and cosmetics. High ticket items like a new house, machine tools, and automobiles also prefer a human touch to influence a final buying decision. So as trade shows and retail environments continue to compete against the “Amazon” concept of buying, new and clever ways need to be found to stimulate the in-store (or tradeshow) buying experience, without being overbearing. The focus on “experiential” has our attention. But, environments that push people to do something they don’t want to do can be a distraction, instead of an attraction. People are not robots. We must be sensitive when developing what we consider to be an attraction when it comes to human behaviour and a visitor’s willingness to participate. I anxiously stand by to see how creative minds will continue to change environments and create experiences that really serve to influence a decision to buy.

COP14 concludes with an ambitious statement of global action by each country The 12-day long 14th Conference of Parties (COP14) to United Nations Convention to Combat Deser tification (UNCCD) concluded with thought-provok ing discussions on land management, restoration of degraded land, drought, climate change, renewable energy, women empowerment, gender equality, water scarcity and various other issues. India was the proud host of UNCCD COP14,which witnessed widespread participation from over 9000 participants from all across the globe at India Expo Centre & Mart, Greater Noida from 2nd to 13th September 2019. Speaking at the Press Conference on the outcomes of COP14, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Prakash Javadekar exuded confidence that all three Rio conventions will work in synergy. In an unprecedented global campaign to save productive land, country parties have agreed to make the Sustainable Development Goal target of achieving land degradation neutrality by 2030 a national target for action. Javadekar reiterated India’s commitment to achieving land degradation neutrality by2030. He also committed to provide an

effective leadership to the UNCCD during his two-year tenure of Presidentship. Countries will address insecurity of land tenure, including gender inequality in land tenure, promote land restoration to reduce land-related carbon emissions and mobilize innovative sources of finance from public and private sources to suppor t the implementation of these decisions at country-level. The framework used for reporting action will be improved to ensure it captures key issues, such as gender equality, drought response and the influence of consumption and production patterns and flows on land degradation. Through the Delhi Declaration, ministers expressed support for new initiatives or coalitions aiming to improve human health and well-being, the health of ecosystems, and to advance peace and security. The Environment Minister stated “Delhi Declaration is an ambitious statement of global action by each country on how to achieve Land Degradation Neutrality”. “To my mind, this was the COP where we put people at the heart of what we do,” said Ibrahim Thiaw, Executive Secretary of UNCCD, with Parties adopting a breakthrough decision on land tenure rights and drawing
on the unique voices, experiences of youth and women. COP 14 also adopted a landmark decision to buttress global efforts to better mitigate and manage the risks of drought and to build resilience. Thiaw also highlighted the contribution of COP 14 to the Climate Action Summit, stressing that land restoration, at scale, is one of the cheapest solutions to address the global crises of climate and biodiversity loss. Attention was also drawn to the role, the private sector play in land restoration going forward, including through promoting sustainable value chains, as well as the incentives that will draw them in, such as the regulation in support of innovation for sustainable land management and rewarding conservation, restoration and sustainable use of resources. COP14, ended today after 11 days of meetings, 11 high-level, 30 committee and over 170 stakeholder meetings, 145 sideevents and 44 exhibitions.

BEFORE YOU HIT THE VENUE
Chapter 13
TOP TIPS FOR PRE-SHOW
STEPHAN MURTAGH
Throughout this book I have looked at giving you ways to make your whole exhibition experience less stressful because the less stress you have, gives you more time to concentrate on what’s really important for you.... building relationships at the show itself. With that in mind, I wanted to give you my top ten tips for things to do before you Exhibit. As mentioned at the start of this book, I will be doing a separate book on during and post show and these will also feature top tips…. Here goes! n Decide on your Exhibition budget to include everything n Find out who your neighbours are in the hall
Guest Column
n Write down your THREE key objectives for exhibiting n Decide on what colours represent your brand
n Personalize your invitations/hold some for onsite n Organise team and exhibition training n Read the exhibitors manual!!
n Complete the Exhibition checklist
n Market your stand everywhere possible
n Set exact and measurable sales/leads targets
1. Know why you exhibit before you do anything else Just as intent is an important factor in the law, it’s essential in exhibiting. Too often exhibitors reserve a booth at a show without knowing why they are going in the first place. Without the guiding light of an overriding goal, they can’t shape their exhibit to match their needs, train their staff to aim at a common goal, or even know if they succeeded. 2. Exhibiting well requires both logistics AND marketing You may say, “I object, your honour. I only have time to manage the logistics for our trade show.”That’s not going to get you off the hook. To succeed, you must also perform well the marketing tasks that too often get pushed aside in favour of details like shipping, ordering show services, and travel arrangements. 3. Exhibit at shows where your buyers are Just as what is legal based on jurisdiction, so changes your fortunes as you exhibit at one of the over 10,000 shows you can choose from (in North America alone). You have to do the homework to determine what your best customers look like, and then find the trade shows where they freely roam. 4. Design your exhibit for your buyers, not you What if your lawyer talked a lot just because he likes to hear the sound of his voice, rather than to convince the jury? Similarly, some companies design their exhibit to show themselves off the way they want to be seen – rather than focusing their message to best appeal to their clients and prospects. 5. Bring only willing booth staffers Do the people you ask to staff your booth react as if being summoned for jury duty? Those people will take that negative attitude with them when they meet your booth visitors. Don’t ever break this law if you want to succeed at shows – just bring willing booth staffers, even

10 SIMPLE LAWS TO TRADE SHOW SUCCESS You don’t need a law degree to grasp the simple rules of trade show success. To ensure you don’t get jailed by poor trade show performance, or judged guilty of wasting your company’s scarce marketing resources, don’t break these 10 laws :
if they cost more to get there. 6. Always train your booth staffers Legal proceedings follow almost ritualistic protocol. You will please the judge if you follow similarly repetitive steps and train your staff for every show. Top sales people still need to know how to adapt to trade show booth staffing. And veteran staffers don’t know your new objectives, new products, latest pre-show and at-show promotions, and how to use the new technology you added to your booth. 7. Qualify your leads to boost follow up Just as not everyone is guilty, not every lead is qualified. Your booth staffers must interrogate attendees to determine their value, and then rank the leads (A – Immediate, B – Intermediate, C – Future). Your reps will be more likely to follow up on the A & B leads, knowing you have already sent the C leads (that you still continue to market to) to the holding cell. 8. Promote your presence before and during the show A good trial lawyer is a little bit the showman in order to sway the jury. You should have no objection to taking a page out of his
book and promoting your presence before and during the show. Let attendees know all the reasons they should visit your booth, so you get their attention, rather than your competitor. 9. Plan for lead follow-up before the show Have your closing arguments prepared before the trial ends – by preparing your lead follow up system before you go to the show. Assign a person to enter the leads, have fulfillment packets prepared, and have a smooth process for getting leads quickly to the right sales people. 10. Measure and report your results to keep exhibiting After the show ends, the jury is still out whether it was a successful show or not. But if you track your leads to sales, compare your costs to your sales, and then report your satisfactory return on investment, you’ll be much more likely to be judged successful. If you’ve just realized you have been breaking these laws all along, consider yourself on parole. You’ve got some time to reform your ways, become a trade show lawabiding citizen, and generate trade show success.

German car industry comes under increasing pressure to go green The 10-day long IAA show, where the latest automobile trends are being showcased until September 22, is crystallising tensions over the car industry in Germany. Environmental campaigners plan to disrupt the Frankfurt motor show this weekend as Germany's car industry comes under increasing pressure to go green and abandon internal combustion engines. "The car industry has cheated on diesel and is contributing to the worsening climate crisis," said Gerald Neubauer, a spokesman for the campaign group Campact, which is coorganising a demonstration Saturday at Frankfurt's biennial International Motor Show (IAA). Police say thousands of demonstrators are expected to walk or cycle to Frankfurt's Exhibition Centre and activists want to disrupt the car show by blocking the surrounding streets on Sunday. "We want a revolution in modes of transport," said a spokeswoman for the climate action group Sand in the Gearbox. The combination of protests and civil disobedience aimed at Germany's car industry shows the sector no longer enjoys the untouchable status it once held as a key driver in Europe's biggest economy. Diesel-fuelled cars have remained at low levels of popularity in Germany following Volkswagen's massive "dieselgate" emissions cheating scandal of 2015. The 10-day long IAA show, where the latest automobile trends are being showcased until September 22, is crystallising tensions over the car industry in Germany, where climate change is shaking up the public discourse. - 'Climate killers' - There are already calls to ban gas-guzzling SUVs from German city centres after four pedestrians, including a three-year-old boy, were killed this month when one mounted the pavement in Berlin. "Such tank-like cars do not belong in cities," tweeted Stephan von Dassel, a Greens politician and mayor of Berlin's Mitte district, where the fatal accident happened. "They are 'climate killers', even without accidents -- every driving error becomes a lifethreatening danger for innocent (pedestrians)." When the Frankfurt car show opened to
Having long been regarded as an essential cog in Europe's biggest economy, Germany's auto industry has reached a crossroads as it struggles to adapt to the trend of electric cars. the press on Tuesday, Greenpeace activists inflated a giant black balloon outside, bearing the inscription CO2. Then on Thursday at the Volkswagen and BMW stands, protesters climbed on SUVs with signs bearing the slogan "Climate Killers" during a visit by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. "The automotive industry has still not understood the climate crisis," Greenpeace activist Benjamin Stephan said. "Instead of celebrating fuel-guzzling SUVs, manufacturers must put an end to these urban tanks and shut down combustion engines." Manufacturers must "get out of petrol and diesel, get out of the combustion engine and reduce the number of cars", added Campact'sNeubauer. The vision for many environmental activists is seeing German cities free of cars. - 'Under pressure' - "The IAA is a symbolic place, where politicians meet carmakers to congratulate themselves" on an outdated mode of transport, said the Sand in the Gearbox spokeswoman, using the pseudonym Tina "Velo" - bike in French. "We have to abandon cars, we want carfree cities."

Sand in the Gearbox is representative of a more radical faction of Germany's environmental movement which is prepared to engage in civil disobedience to attract attention. Movements such as the Extinction Rebellion network, which use non-violent resistance to protest climate change, are spreading across Europe. I n G er many, the similar group EndeGelaende succeeded in occupying and temporarily shutting down a large brown coal mine in June, which has galvanised the anti-car movement. "The automotive industry is under pressure -- it no longer has the support of society as it did a few years ago, because it has missed out on developments and has no concepts for the future," added Tina Velo. Having long been regarded as an essential cog in Europe's biggest economy, Germany's auto industry has reached a crossroads as it struggles to adapt to the trend of electric cars. Merkel said she would support the sector through "revolutions" in climate protection and digitalisation, but warned firms must develop new technologies and win back lost trust among the public.

Israel offers preview of its pavilion at the World Expo 2020 in Dubai
‘Towards tomorrow’: Israel’s booth at UAE exposition a rare opportunity to showcase Israeli innovation in water technology, health and hi-tech to the Arab World Israel recently offered a first taste of its planned pavilion at the Expo 2020 in Dubai, under the headline “Towards tomorrow,” that hopes to showcase Israeli innovation to the Arab World and beyond. A short clip posted on several of the Foreign Ministry’s social media accounts shows a simulation of the pavilion, which is described as an “icon, hope and aspiration” and appears to focus on Israeli innovation and technology. The pavilion has “no walls and no borders,” according to the narrator of the short clip. “An open invitation to join hands on the amazing journey forward and to shape our future together.” Israel’s invitation to the capital of the United Arab Emirates — a country that has no formal diplomatic relations with the Jewish state — for the expo was hailed by Israel and others as another sign of warming ties between Jerusalem and the Gulf states. In light of their common enmity to Iran, Israel and the Sunni Arab states have in recent years cooperated clandestinely. “The Foreign Ministry is pleased to be the leading [government agency] in Israel’s participation in the Dubai Expo, which opens in October 2020 and closes in April 2021,” the Foreign Ministry’s directorgeneral, Yuval Rotemsaid. “It’s a stage of global importance, on which stage in which Israel has a great deal to contribute,”he added. The Israeli pavilion emphasizes “the spirit of Israeli entrepreneurship and innovation, which has gained many fans around the world,”he said. “Among other things, the Israeli booth will also showcase Israeli innovations and technologies in various fields such as water, medicine and information technologies.” The pavilion was designed by Tel Avivbased KnafoKlimor Architects. The official website of the World Expo features articles about the pavilions of nearly 40 participating countries, including Monaco, Belarus and Turkmenistan, but not Israel. In April, the Foreign Ministry first announced that Israel will take part in the 2020 World Expo, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailing “another expression of Israel’s rising status in the world and the region.” At the time, the ministry said it welcomed “the opportunity to share our spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship and to present Israeli innovations and trailblazing technology in various fields such as water, medicine and information technology.” “Expos are meeting places where people all over the world come together and take advantage of each other’s talents to face joint challenges and advance

The expo, the latest in the Paris-based Bureau International des Expositions’(BIE)“universal expositions,”will see over 190 countries showcase their cultures, innovations and visions for the future. “We have invited every country in the world without exception,” organizers in Dubai announced, saying it would be “a truly international event.” “For more than 170 years, World Expos have been apolitical events focused on furthering humanity for the common good through innovation, cultural exchange, creativity and collaboration. We are proud to continue that tradition,” the organizers said in a statement. Vicente G. Loscertales, head of the BIE, said that “by inviting all countries of the world to take part, including the State of Israel, the organizers of Expo 2020 are genuinely reflecting the universal spirit of World Expos.” The BIE describes expos, which follow in the tradition of London’s 1851 Great Exhibition, as “large-scale, global events… to educate the public, share innovation, promote progress and foster cooperation.” Expo 2020, which runs from October 20 next year to April 20, 2021, is set to attract some 25 million visitors to the glitzy emirate, famed for its luxury resorts and opulent shopping malls. The last World Expo was held in Milan, Italy in 2015. In that exposition, the Israeli pavilion was designed as a giant “vertical field” of wheat, rice and corn. It was intended to showcase Israeli expertise in the drip-irrigation technology that has enabled the cultivation of crops in arid areas around the world after being first developed on a kibbutz in the Negev desert. Over the past months, Israel’s backdoor relations with former Arab foes have increasingly entered public view. Culture and Spor t Minister Miri Regevtraveled to the UAE capital of Abu Dhabi last year for the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam judo tournament, and the Israeli national anthem was played for the first time on the Arabian peninsula after SagiMuki won gold in the under-81 kilogram category.

Some 1,062 visitors from 35 countries attended the futuristic showcase, which ended a two-day run on 4 September. “The double digit growth in visitor numbers on only a second showing is a resounding result for any trade show,” said Andreas Rex, show director of SPS Automation Middle East, which is organised by Messe Frankfurt Middle East. “This can be seen as a sure sign that the GCC has now entered the digital age and that industrial transformation is rising right to the top of the investment agenda.” The two-day conference and exhibition featured 23 exhibitors, demonstrating advanced technology including AI, 3D and robotic solutions that can be leveraged to help the region achieve competitiveness and attain its economic diversification and industrialisation goals. “The industry is turning a sharp corner as a flood of new technologies are poised to shape how business is done,” said Rex. “Feedback from exhibitors has been highly positive with most convinced that technology uptake will advance in the region taking it into an exciting period of solutions implementation.” Speakers at the forward-thinking SPS Au tom at ion M iddle East Conference, which took place on the show floor with 28 sessions delivered by more than 30 experts, found themselves addressing packed houses as they probed and unveiled the technology which will fuel economic transformation. The conference program hosted top speakers from eminent organisations such as ABB, GE Digital, Danfoss Drives, Cognizant, Swisslog, Daifuku, Obeikan Group, CEVA Logistics & many more. In addition to the speakers, SPS Automation exhibitors Beckhoff, Delta Electronics and Procentec officially launched the Masterclass sessions

which were attended by students and professionals in the field of automation. Experts led the audience through the latest solutions for smar t manufacturing with case studies, presentations and exploratory panel discussions. Kemal Evesen, international sales manager at Pilz, said in light of the fast-approaching mega-event, Expo 2020, there has been a notable shift towards automated systems. “As with Expo 2020 happening at the end of next year, we’re seeing the market investing in automation,” said Evesen. “With greater automation in the market you need to make sure that you have the right safety tools in place and this is where we come in.” “Attending events such as SPS have given us the opportunity to explore customer needs and see how quickly the automation sector is expanding in the region,” he added. Messe Frankfurt Middle East says it is now looking to build on the 2019 visitor growth, and anticipates that SPS Automation Middle East 2020 will continue on its upward track in being the focal point of the region’s industrial and building automation sector. “The potential is huge, and the region is clearly waking up to the fact that so too are the risks of inaction. It should be remembered that according to the IMD World Competitiveness Center, digital competitiveness improvements can boost the Arab region’s GDP by up to US$ 0.3 trillion annually,” added Rex. “Automation is now a fact of industrial and commercial life if the Arab world is to remain relevant in 4th industrial revolution era. “This is further underlined by the digitalisation opportunities now being prioritised in the Saudi Vision 2030 a n d t h e K i n g d o m’s N a t i o n a l Transformation Program, in the New Kuwait 2035 Vision, the strategies of Bahrain's Information & e-Government Authority and Oman’s Digital Initiative.”

Husum 2019: Germany heading for a "crash landing" At a trade fair like Husum Wind 2019, every exhibitor has a story to tell. But with the German industry facing a cliff edge, could those stories and their innovations, start looking elsewhere? Sometimes the enthusiasm of one person stands out ahead of competitors – just like Jens Grunwald‘s presentation for North Rhine-Westphalia-based Harting Technology. Grunwald demonstrated the company’s new fibre-optic rotary transmitter with bidirectional data transfer, which is now in serial production. It provides fast, secure, high-volume data communication between the static part of a turbine – the nacelle – and the rotating part – the hub and blades – the company said. But if Germany‘s onshore wind sector goes down the drain, so will the country‘s major wind trade fairs in Husum and Hamburg, and with them the demonstrations of innovative products, the know-how and the stories will go elsewhere. The fact that much emphasis at Husum 2019 was placed on keeping wind turbines running after their 20-year support period – dubbed by cynics as "care for the dying" – instead of replacing them with new and better technology shows the state of affairs in the German onshore wind industry. Empty promises Forging ahead with sector coupling of renewables to heat, chemicals, electric mobility and ambitions of becoming the world number one in hydrogen technologies,
If the German wind market falters, so will the trade shows and the technical innovation as heralded by German economy minister Peter Altmaier in July, are hollow aims if insufficient underlying green energy is available. While Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke at the opening ceremony of the international automobile exhibition in Frankfurt on 12 September and urged for more charging points for electric cars, not a single federal minister made the journey to Husum to learn about where the green power is supposed to be sourced. Yet the German government must present a plan before the end of the year to t h e E u r o p e a n Co m m i s s i o n o n i t s contribution to meeting 2030 climate targets.
The Renewable Energy Act is due for an update this autumn, implementing the recommendations of a government working group, set up in November 2018, on public acceptance and the energy transition. The results — due last May — have still not been published. Crash landing "A bad crash landing" is awaiting the industry by mid-2020, warned Hans Dieter Kettwig, managing director of Enercon, unless positive signals about the near-term future of onshore wind are coming soon. With up to seven turbine manufacturers competing in a current German market volume of around 1.5GW, there is not much to go round, he pointed out. The government has a 65% renewables target for electricity to 2030, "but there is no honest commitment to the target, nor to taking steps to reaching it", complained Gunnar Liehr, vice president for Germany, Austria and Switzerland at turbine manufacturer Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy. According to renewable energy federation Bundesverband Erneuerbare Energien, 4.7GW of onshore wind and 10GW of additional solar are needed annually, along with a minimum of 20GW of offshore wind, by 2030 to reach that target.
K 2019 show in October, fully booked with 3,000 exhibitors K 2019, known as "The world’s biggest show for plastics and rubber" will transpire from 16 to 23 October 2019 in Düsseldorf. The fully booked show has 3,000 exhibitors from more than 60 countries. K will occupy the entire Düsseldorf exhibition grounds with some 175,000 m² of net exhibition space, and more than 200,000 trade visitors from all over the world who are expected invest their time at the event. K 2019 underscores its popularity with the global industry by addressing the current challenges in regard to "plastics for sustainable development" and the "circular economy". A special exhibition "Plastics Shape the Future" will see itself as a podium for solutions and answers to current social trends and discussions. Crucial topics will be discussed in detail, including packaging waste, marine litter and climate change on the one hand and resource conservation, energy efficiency and recycling on the other. The Science Campus of K 2019 stands for the dialogue between science and industry, with sustainability and recycling management also being examined intensively. Last but not least, the joint appearance of VDMA (German Engineering Federation) and its member companies will also be focused this time on the topic of the circular economy.
October 2019
Almost three years ago – during K 2016 in fact – EuPC, PlasticsEurope and Plastics Recyclers Europe launched the Polyolefin Circular Economy Platform (PCEP). Secretary General Venetia Spencer describes it as a forum for collaboration and action, bringing together everyone active in polyolefins to transform our industry and advance the circular economy. Spencer said, "Our membership is open to the entire value chain, producers, converters, recyclers, brand owners, retailers, waste management companies and all the remaining actors who interact at any stage of the material cycle." PCEP has pledged to increase by one million tonnes the volume of recycled polyolefin content used in product in Europe. This is the largest polymer pledge made as part of the European Union’s Plastic Pledge campaign, which aims to see 10 million tonnes of recycled content in products in Europe in
2025 through voluntary industry action. "We are also committed to reusing or recycling 60% of collected polyolefin packaging by 2030 and having more than 75% of polyolefin packaging designed for recycling," Spencer added. In a move that resonated with India, the European Parliament approved the single-use plastics directive in March. It is likely to be implemented across member states by 2021. The rules address the ten most found items on EU beaches. Measures include a ban on selected single-use plastics products for which alternatives exist on the market – cotton bud sticks, cutlery, plates, straws, and stirrers, as well as cups, food and beverage containers made of expanded polystyrene and on all products made of oxo-degradable plastic – plus sticks for balloons. Also included in the Directive is a 90% separate collection target for plastic bottles by 2029 (77% by 2025) and the introduction of design requirements to connect caps to bottles, as well as a target to incorporate 25% of recycled plastic in PET bottles as from 2025 and 30% in all plastic bottles as from 2030. K was first organised by Messe Düsseldorf in 1952 and takes place every three years. The last K in 2016 saw 3,293 exhibitors from 61 countries on more than 173,000 m² of net exhibition space and 232,053 trade visitors, 71 per cent of whom came from abroad.

Business events sector important pillar of QNTC's strategy: official The business events sector is an important pillar of the Qatar National Tourism Council’s (QNTC) wider strategy to develop tourism in Qatar, a senior QNTC official has said. Ahmed al- Obaidli also stressed that the QNTC has been working with local and international stakeholders to attract more tourists to the country. With as many as 137 events and conferences held in the countr y last year, tourism activities contribute “about 2.3%” to Qatar’s GDP, he added. Asked about tourism’s spill over effect on local retailers and other establishments, al-Obaidli said this depends on the types of conference or event held and the number of visitors and exhibitors. “We classify events into ‘mega’, ‘mid-size’ or ‘small’ event. A mega event usually gathers around 7,000 people or more.
October 2019
And if you multiply this by $500, which is the average amount a tourist spends, then this will give you a good number. This is w hy we are fo cusin g on attracting these associations to hold their events in Qatar,” alObaidli said. The official noted that Qatar will be hosting several mega events over the next three years. These include the 10th edition of the ‘All Together B e t t e r H e a l t h ’ ( AT B H ) conference in 2020, which, alObaidli emphasised, “is the first time the event would be held in the Middle East”. Similarly, Qatar will host the 2020 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Forum, and the annual congress of Union
Internationale des Concierges d’Hotels (UICH) in 2021, he pointed out. “At QNTC and the Qatar Business Events Corporation, we are focusing on helping and aiding the local private sector to attract these big international events and conferences. “We are working with them in putting attractive packages, which include the airlines and hoteliers; these packages are aimed at attracting international associations to hold their meetings in venues here, such as the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre,” al-Obaidli said. He added, “And since we have the infrastructure in the country, as well as an airline
that connects Qatar to over 160 destinations worldwide, Qatar has become an attractive market for many international associations. “We are working alongside local and international stakeholders to make sure that wh en th e tour i s t s com e, whether they are here for business or leisure, they will have a good experience in the country so, tourism experience is among the main factors that we are focusing on at QNTC.”

No slowdown in automobile sector, claims traders body CAIT
The auto industry has been attributing the sales downturn to several factors like high GST (Goods and Services Tax) rates, farm distress, stagnant wages and liquidity constraints. Traders body CAIT on Tuesday said there is no slowdown in the domestic automobile sector and the industry is making hue and cry only to get a package from the government. The auto industr y has been attributing the sales downturn to several factors like high GST (Goods and Services Tax) rates, farm distress, stagnant wages and liquidity constraints. "There is no slowdown in the domestic automobile sector. They are saying this to get a package from the government," said Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) Secretary General, Praveen Khandelwalin New Delhi. Citing an example of new vehicle launches, he said companies have received huge number of bookings, which do not reflect any slowdown in the sector. Talking about recent festival sales announced by global e-commerce firms like Amazon and Flipkart, Khandelwal demanded immediate action from the government to ban these mega sales. He claimed that such firms are violating foreign direct investment (FDI) norms in the e-commerce sector. "If the government does not take action, we will approach the court," he said. He also said these e-commerce companies are allowed to do only B2B business but they are indulging in big advertisement campaign. "These companies are not doing business, this is the business of valuation. They should give details of top 10 vendors in the last five years," he said. He also said interest rates are high in India and global firms get loans at cheap rates.

Clear signs of revival in industrial production, fixed investment: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on September 14 said there are clear signs of revival of industrial production and fixed investment after economic growth plunged to a six-year low. At a press conference called to announce the third part of the stimulus package for the economy, she said measures are being taken to improve credit outflow from banks. Also, transmission of interest rate cuts is being effected by banks, she said, adding she will meet heads of public sector lenders on September 19 to review the transmission. The Reserve Bank of India has since February cut the benchmark interest rate by 110 basis points but banks have lagged in transmitting
the lower rates to borrowers. The government has been pressing banks to link borrowing rates to an external benchmark to speed up the transmission of rate cuts. India’s GDP growth decreased for the fifth consecutive quarter in April-June 2019 to 5 per cent, the lowest in six years. This was on the back of faltering domestic demand, with both private consumption and investment proving lackluster. The government’s previous policy measures to stimulate the economy included support for the automobile sector, a reduction in capital gains tax, and additional liquidity support for shadow banks. Accompanying structural reforms included a further easing of the foreign direct investment (FDI) regime and consolidation of the public banking sector.

Filling up India’s Conventions Calendar The domestic MICE industry looks to grow its share to at least 2 per cent of the global pie The Hannover exhibition centre in Germany, one of the largest convention centres in the world, is spread across 5,54,000 sq. metres. Stuttgart, Berlin, Dusseldorf, all have fairly massive meeting spaces too. By contrast, if you add up all the convention centres in India, they total to just 5,00,000 sq. metres of space. Although the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) business in India is pegged at ₹25,000 crore and growing at 8 per cent, year on year, it has a miniscule 0.5 per cent share of the global industry, which is estimated to be around $808 billion (₹5,814,570 crore). The US and Germany lead in MICE, while India trails at 28th place — even tiny Thailand is ahead of us. However, delegates and speakers at the 12th Conventions India Conclave held recently in Kochi were hopeful that with more than 12 new venues coming up in India, things could change. As Chander Mansharamani, Vice-Chairman of India Conventions Promotion Bureau, a body that tries to attract more events to India, pointed out, “Once those come up in the next couple of years, MICE space in India could cross 15,00,000 sq. metres.” The big debate at the CIC event was how to rev up the growth of MICE and take India’s share to at least 2 per cent of the global industry pie. “For that, the entire ecosystem — from convention centre builder to hoteliers to event planners right down to flower vendors — has to chip in and pitch collectively,” said Suman Billa, joint secretary, Ministry of Tourism. But first, do we need world-class convention centres? Exciting new venues Among the upcoming venues is the mega facility at New Delhi’s Pragati Maidan being readied by the India Trade Promotion Organisation, which includes a five-star hotel and several meetings arena. There is also the ambitious ₹25,703-crore, 90-acre, India International Convention and Expo Centre coming up in Delhi’s Dwarka area, where 20,000 delegates can congregate easily. In Bengaluru, the Karnataka government is creating the Bangalore International Conventions Centre on 35 acres of land near the airport.
Concerted efforts by all stakeholders were imperative to project the country as a MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) centre on the world stage, said experts in the tourism sector. Lot of things need to be done, including developing basic i n f ra s t r u c t u re, to at t ra c t inter national exhibitions, conventions and conferences to India, they opined. Though MICE tourism is making waves in other countries, India still has a long way to go as its share in this sector is a miniscule 0.5 per cent. The Conventions India Conclave, which was recently
October 2019
Apart from the government, the private sector too is creating a lot of convention infrastructure — there is the international convention centre that Reliance Industries is rolling out at its Jio World Centre in Mumbai’s BKC area. In Kerala, Yusuf Ali’s Lulu Group International, which opened a 10-lakh sq.ft. convention centre plus five-star hotel project last year at Bolgatty Island in Kochi, is creating more space this year. It is set to open another Hyatt hotel in Thrissur and expand the existing convention centre there. There is an economic imperative behind the race to set up big MICE venues. For starters, it can help India improve its dismal international tourist arrival figures. Also, as Billa points out, there is a lot of downstream spending that happens during business conventions. Most visitors tend to stay on extra days, sampling tourism offerings or splurging on shopping and experiences, and the whole city where the event is held benefits. Mausam Bhattacharjee, Director of Sales and Marketing at Grand Hyatt Kochi Bolgatty, corroborates this. Although Kerala is predominantly a leisure market, the Grand Hyatt, since its opening last year, has logged 250 MICE events, of which the four-day APICON event, which saw 9,000 delegates per day, was the largest. The hotel catered 40,000 meals at the event. Seventy per cent of the hotel’s revenues have come in through the convention centre it manages for the Lulu Group, far higher than all expectations, points out Bhattacharjee. Not surprisingly, the hotel is firing on all cylinders to attract more events, offering unique experiences. But competition is intense and hotting up. At the CIC, where nearly 150 potential buyers were in attendance, there were big pitches from Bhopal’s Minto Hall, which positioned itself as a heritage convention centre playing up its association with Viceroy Minto, Gandhinagar’s Mahatma Mandir, managed by the Leela Hotels group, that wooed visitors with the Gandhian philosophy card and the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre that played up its hi-tech credentials. Trends and shifts While the new venues sound exciting, the
takeaway from the conclave was that India should not wait for big box spaces but aggressively chase the small events for which it already has the infrastructure. “The trend is that conferences are breaking up,” said Senthil Gopinath, CEO of ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association), advising attendees not to go after the larger pieces but chase smaller ones. According to him, 90 per cent of the conferences in the world are events with less than 2,000 delegates, which even non-metro venues in India can easily host. And while international conferences are prestigious and bring in big bucks, Gopinath also advised focusing on the domestic, which yields more volumes. Currently, a lot of Indian corporate incentive meets are being grabbed by Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore — why not try and stop these exports by offering equally ‘value for money’ experiences? Admittedly, with 138 destinations competing worldwide for conventions, it’s a tough field. But according to Gopinath, conference buyers are looking for venues that are flexible, format-rich, and fun while events themselves are getting to be fast-paced, and super-focused. While pitching, convention hosts should focus on these trends. He felt that India’s biggest strength was its variety and diversity of locales. The other big strength was its huge knowledge economy. If you consider that the biggest MICE buyer is the medical fraternity, then the presence of a vibrant population of doctors in India only helps the country’s pitch. Could video conferences hurt the growth of MICE? According to Gopinath, they have only helped the MICE segment — as forwardthinking conference organisers enhance participation through webinars, live streaming and more. “People will always love to meet,” he sums up.
Miles to go for MICE tourism held here under the aegis of Indian Convention Promotion Bureau, discussed the opportunities of MICE tourism in India. The conclave deliberated that Indian cities, including Kochi, could scale new heights in MICE tourism if due stress was given to develop basic infrastructure. The active involvement of the city administrations was needed to promote MICE tourism, said ITC CEO and CII Tourism and Hospitality National Committee chairman DipakHaksar. The government should
actively intervene in promoting MICE tourism as the future of tourism sector lies in this field. The government should support MICE tourism and requisite tax cuts should be incorporated,” he added. Global MICE meet A Global MICE meet would
be held to showcase India's potential as MICE tourism destination before foreign travellers and projects should be envisaged to promote MICE tourism with coordination among central ministries, said former secretary to Ministry of Tourism Vinod Sushi. A task group should be put in place for MICE tourism like those formed for cruise tourism and adventure tourism. Apart from major cities, two-tier cities should also be given their due share in MICE tourism. “The most important thing is to portray whole of India as a MICE tourism brand,” he added.

Each morning at Hall Forum 2, SMART HORTICULTURE ASIA explored the rising influence of digitalization and disruptive technology in the fresh produce industry. The attention turned to cold chain management and transport systems each afternoon at Hall Forum 2, where COOL LOGISTICS ASIA took center stage. The Hall Forums attracted a collective audience of 1,300 attendees over the course of the three days, covering a wide range of subjects, including sustainable packaging, artificial intelligence and the growing influence of e-commerce on perishable logistics. In addition to the Hall Forums, two events took place alongside ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA for the first time this year. The 12th International Frutic symposium was held in conjunction with ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA, bringing together academic scientists and fresh produce industry professionals for technical discussions covering innovations, new technologies and research required to promote the supply of safe, high-quality fresh fruit and vegetables. Global Women Fresh, the newly created networking platform for women in the international fresh produce industry, also held its first meeting at ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA, following the success of the non-profit organization’s inaugural event at this year’s FRUIT LOGISTICA trade fair in Berlin. Global Produce Events also hosted the 2nd Chinese Business Leaders Breakfast together with Fruitnet Media International on the second day of the show (September 5). ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA 2019 concluded on a positive note, and confirmed its position as the essential annual event for Asia’s fastgrowing fresh produce market, which is set to make up over 50% of global consumer spending on fresh fruit and vegetables by 2030. “We welcome you to join us again next year, when ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA takes place in the last week of September (September 23– 25),” said Wollbold. The next edition of ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA takes place on September 23–25, 2020, at AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong. ASIAFRUIT CONGRESS takes place on September 22, 2020, at the same venue. The brand family ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA, the leading continental trade show for Asia’s fresh produce business, takes place on September 23–25, 2020, at AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong. FRUIT LOGISTICA, the leading global trade fair for the fresh produce business, takes place on February 5–7, 2020, at Berlin ExpoCenter City in Germany. CHINA FRUIT LOGISTICA is now working at full speed to establish exciting new partnerships to create a new format in Shanghai for 2020.

What it is and why it matters Big data is a term that describes the large volume of data – both structured and unstructured – that inundates a business on a day-to-day basis. But it’s not the amount of data that’s important. It’s what organizations do with the data that matters. Big data can be analysed for insights that lead to better decisions and strategic business moves. n Why Is Big Data Important?
The importance of big data doesn’t revolve around how much data you have, but what you do with it. You can take data from any source and analyse it to find answers that enable: 1. Cost reductions 2. Time reductions 3. New product development and optimized offerings and 4. Smart decision making. When you combine big data with high-powered analytics, you can accomplish businessrelated tasks such as: Big data in Event Management is unstructured information created by the activities of attendees, speakers, event staff, and partners. It includes details such as spending habits while on the event floor, general attitude towards vendors, engagement with guest speaker and so on and so forth. What makes it so valuable is that when properly analysed, big data allows you to overhaul virtually every aspect of your event. It can help make your staff more efficient, the event floor can be modified to enable smooth flow and easy access, topics can be reworked based on attendee opinion, and costs can be minimized. A host of different analytics platforms are being used across the event management space. These tools are designed to look for patterns in unstructured information, at which point a trained expert can examine these patterns to see if they hold anything of value. The analysis of big data is a fairly complex task, one requiring an analytical mind and a great sense of discipline. Those dealing with data are required to have fair amount of training and expertise in the field. n What’s so BIG about BIG DATA?

Anyone in this business should not underestimate the value of big data to the process of event planning. It is an extremely valuable tool that every event manager should possess and be adept to use. With billions of devices connected online and each device gathering unique user and usage data large amounts of data is available. The challenge lies in making sense of this vast data and using it effectively and efficiently for the success of the business. Big data in event management delivers better analytics for analysing and planning events. Before the advent of big data, gathering accurate event data was a challenging task. Today incredibly useful information about attendees, their opinions and feedback can be gathered without event organizers needing to spend too much time on information gathering and analytics. In-depth analysis allows event planners to identify finer details about their audience, especially their preferences and behaviours. This makes post-event analysis more accurate and timely thus facilitating more precise planning and budgeting of future events. Whether the event is in-person or virtual one,
big data analytics can help target potential audience with finer precision. While going through previously collected data on past audiences, certain patterns about demographics and psychographics of attendees will be drawn. This information will come handy when marketing the next event. Event planners can connect with the right people and find potential attendees who will be interested in the event. Data management also makes it possible to separate prospects and create lists of people who are most likely to attend. This enables the planners to focus on contacting these potential guests instead of inviting everyone. The event will be filled with people who will truly benefit from attending it and thus save time and money that would have otherwise gone into searching for ideal guests. An event can go through multiple changes from the time of conception to execution. This is part-and-parcel of every event and sometimes can be very expensive to keep up with. Big Data in Event Management gives event planners a 360degree view of the event planning process including the changes made. This equips event planners to identify issues they are likely to face when organizing similar events in future. This does not make the roller coaster ride involved in taking an event to its completion much easier but can make the changes more predictable and lot less costly. Also, the collected data can be used to accurately budget time and costs for each event thus greatly improving the event ROI. Accessing and gathering data is easy, but the real challenge lies in identifying, measuring and analysing it effectively in accordance with the company ’s business model. What information you select and analyse is the key for any company or event planner.

Interpack 2020 to be held at Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre The German-Saudi Arabian Liaison O ffice for Economic Affairs (GESALO) hosted, in cooperation with the Messe Düsseldorf, a presentation and official press conference in Riyadh to promote the Interpack 2020. Bernd Jablonowski, Global Portfolio Director Processing & Pack aging form the Messe Düsseldorf GmbH, Christian Tr a u m a n n , Pr e s i d e n t o f I nterpack 2020 as well as representatives of GESALO welcomed the professional audience last Sept. 10 at 8 AM in the Moevenpick Hotel Riyadh. The avid interest taken by exhibitors in the run-up to interpack 2017 that brought the wor ld ’s biggest and most important trade fair of the packaging sector and related p ro c e s s i n d u s t r i e s re c o rd attendance of 2,865 companies, was followed by trade fair days from 4 to 10 May with high spirits and further records: 74% of the approximately 170,500 visitors travelled to Düsseldorf from abroad – three quarters of them were decision-makers. The high percentage of German and international topnotch experts from a total of 168 countries made for highly

satisfied faces among exhibitors, who delighted at promising business contacts and even concrete deals concluded in the seven-digit range. Visitors in turn benefitted from an internationally unrivalled multitude of innovations on display and a unique market overview. This was also reflected in the corresponding high scores they gave the trade fair: just under 98% stated in the official survey that they were satisfied or very satisfied with their visit to Interpack 2017. They took an interest in all ranges and segments of Interpack but packaging media
received significantly more attention than at the previous event. “interpack is an absolute must-go event for companies in this industr y and provides unique momentum. Every three years it is not only a one-of-akind performance showcase but also the place where suppliers and customers from all over the world get together to network and do business,” underlines FriedbertKlefenz, President of Interpack 2017. Proving a top trend at many stands was the further digitalization of production processes on the way to Industry
4.0 applications. Production linked along these lines makes it possible to manufacture personalized packaging efficiently or to guarantee traceability, to name but two options. Fur ther more, the modular design of packaging machines and process lines and optimized digital operating concepts play a pivotal role in order to reduce complexity in manufacturing and achieve the highest degree of flexibility possible for changing batch sizes or product versions. The upcoming interpack will be held in May 2020 at Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre.
