Tree Work Ian McDowell General Manager

Dear Member,

While reasonable weather tried its best to hold on it’s fair to say that we are now in the depths of winter, but it’s great to see that so many of you don’t let a little rain, wind and cold get in the way of enjoying your golf! The course is holding up well and we will continue to do everything we can to keep it in the best shape possible. This will involve more posts and rope where necessary to protect specific areas, move pinch points away from fairways and approaches and keep trolleys well away from the green complexes. Thank you all for adhering to the traffic management during your round.

Every five years we have a full tree survey undertaken by a Consultant Arboriculturist to ascertain the health and condition of all the trees across the site, identifying any that require work to address issues/ promote healthy growth or felling for safety reasons. Having received the report, we are now working through the 92 actions identified that range from dead-wooding to pollarding and in some cases felling. While some trees will be removed, we are also engaging with schemes which will support us in introducing more trees and hedging throughout the site – please don’t worry though, any new hedging will be kept well away from the middle of the fairway!

Cancellation of Tee Times Daylight and tee times are at a premium over the next three months, please remember to cancel any tee times you no longer require as soon as possible so they are available to others to book. Tee times can easily be cancelled through the Elite Live app up to 24 hours before the booking.

7-Day Membership The 7-day membership has now been closed and a waiting list is in place. There is a payment of £200 to join the waiting list with £150 going to the joining fee when a space becomes available and the remaining £50 being transferred into the bar levy.

Gift Vouchers With Christmas fast approaching it’s the perfect opportunity to point out that you can now purchase gift vouchers through the website! Retail vouchers are available from £5 and cover any shop purchases, green fees or hire items.

GM UPDATE Sunday Carvery The Sunday Carvery is back and will be taking on selected weekends through the winter so it’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy a delicious roast lunch with the family after your round. One course is £15.95 or £22.95 for two courses, and members receive a 10% discount!

Greenkeeper Chelcie Wins The First Ever iGolf Open! Congratulations to greenkeeper Chelcie Lawrie who came out on top winning England Golf’s first ever iGolf Open at Woodhall Spa in August. Competing with 57 other golfers, Chelcie enjoyed brilliant back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18 to see her pick up the women’s trophy.

Boiler Replacement We are currently in the process of replacing the main boilers in the clubhouse, a project which is costing over £75,000. There is a temporary boiler in place during the work to ensure the continuity of our heating and hot water and we hope the work should be completed by the end of December. As a company, BGL aims to achieve net zero by 2026 which means that environmental impact is considered front and centre of all our purchasing decisions. The new boilers will be consuming 18 to 20% less gas than the previous ones and are expected to reduce our carbon footprint by 14,500kg over the next five years. In addition, we are also looking at the potential of introducing a supplementary solar thermal system to further improve efficiency.

Miranda Ties The Knot! Congratulations to Administration Controller Miranda who became Mrs. Abrahams after tying the knot with husband Andrew on Sunday 10th September 2023.

Seniors Scratch I’m pleased to be able to say that at the recent Senior Scratch County League AGM our club’s Senior Scratch team has been voted in as a full member of the league and will join and play in the 4th division next year. My congratulations to those who have worked hard to achieve this success and I wish our club’s Senior Scratch squad the very best of luck for your first season in the County League.

New Year’s Eve and Christmas Party Availability We have lots going on at the club over the coming weeks as we hit the Christmas season and if you are looking for a great night out to celebrate with friends, family, or work colleagues we still have availability left for some of our shared party nights. Our New Year’s Eve celebration also promises to be a fantastic night and it would be great to see in the new year with as many members as possible! For prices and availability please contact the Sales Office who will be more than happy to help. I look forward to seeing you at the club soon! Ian McDowell General Manager

Next up was the Langshaw Trophy on Bank Holiday Monday, and this was won by Ed Laver and Dinah Howard:

CAPTAIN’S UPDATE The ever-popular Gents Summer League concluded in August. Winning the Summer League Bowl on the day was the Team of Mike Van Wyk, Adam Duke and Stewart Fox. The Kitchener Trophy, for winners of weekly stablefords and medals, was won by Aaron Ewing on the day. The Thursday Evening League provided a lot of the finalists for the Kitchener Trophy, and was won by Josh Mann.

We’ve also recently seen the conclusion of many of the summer knockouts: The mixed greensomes was won by Pete Laurence and Elaine Meager. The singles scratch knockout was won by Matt Brown Dave Borrett won the singles knockout. And finally, Haroon and Ziad Ahmed won the 4BBB knockout.

The Gents pairs competition, the Autumn Cup, was keenly contested with a large field and won Dear Redbourn on the day by Paul and Matt Bullock.

Five were at home (we won four and lost one) and seven were away matches (we drew two and lost five). Our best win was 7.5 to 0.5 at home against Whitehill GC but this is counterbalanced by an 8 to 0 away loss against Redbourn GC. So overall, including the Burhill and Harpenden results, we have a winning ratio of 50% in 2023. We had 54 different players turn out for the club, so five new players volunteered since the last newsletter. I would like to thank every one of the players, the individual organisers and Robin Edwards (the match administrator) for helping us achieve another successful season. Continued on the next page

LADIES REPORT Chiltern Ladies Golf League “CLGL” Ryder Cup Finale The finale is where all clubs in the CLGL congregate at a host club. This year the hosts were Oakland Park. This is different to the matches as the teams play for stableford points in formats of betterball, greensomes and individual. All the points in your club are added up to determine the winner. Usually, APGC come second to the hosts, but this year our team of eight ladies were successful and won with 175 points, quite a margin on second place.

Autumn Cup Again, the summer continued for this event with us being able to sit on the patio after our round. The winner with a nett score of 70 was Elaine Meagher with the runner-up being Lucinda Mileham with a net score of 74. The day was organised by Caroline Leith.

Aldwicks v Ladies Captain’s Trophy This should have been the Lady Captain’s Trophy. As we do not have a captain this year, it was agreed that the trophy should still be played for. On a lovely day in late September, the winner was Judith Pearson with 39 Dear Redbourn points, and the runner-up was Linda Reeve with 38 points on countback from Jenny Member, Maxwell. The day was Giatinum nobitae eici organised by Diana Godden. officipicit ventur, conesequat quatur, quodist ruptat.

COURSE UPDATE Craig Betts Course Manager

Dear Members,

done and recovery is very quick. We can blow the cores to the side of the greens and into the semi-rough. We followed this up a few days later with light topdressing and greens are back to their best.

It’s been a while since we have done a course report so there is quite a lot that has been happening on the course. I’ll do my best to inform Dear Redbourn you all and bring you back up to date.

Member,

This is a technique that targets the top 25mm of the green and takes out a 4mm core without sacrificing playability after the work is

Tees and Approaches All tees and approaches were also scarified and followed up with a well-timed over seeding which throughout winter will pay dividends. Over the last few years, we have been able to overseed very regularly which is now really starting to show with the tees now looking very strong going into winter. We have also started our winter aeration verti draining work on tees and approaches. We will verti draining regularly on a lot of areas around the course in the next few months.

Course We recently had our tree survey which each site within the BGL Group has done. This gives us a complete detailed plan of what work needs to be carried out over the foreseeable future regarding tree management.

COURSE UPDATE On the list, we have over 90 trees with a lot of dead wood that needs to be removed and there will be a few trees that will unfortunately need to be removed due to being either dead, rotten, or dangerous. All the work we will be carrying out is essential either for the health of the tree or for the health and safety of those on the golf course.

Dear Redbourn You will have seen work undertaken at the Member, back of the 1st green, 2nd tee, and 5th green

This is done to help shape the trees, to give a better visual through the golf course. Bitatur, sinctin nobist modiatio blaboritat estia quo voluptatur aperfer Bunkers fercia pos ut optaquid quas You will have possibly seen the new way we ipsaniet dolorep erspelistiis have to rakingint bunkers over the last reptiotaken occatibuscil few weeks with the faces still being flat raked qui omnimendit, occum but using a spring to help scratch up the sendelendi se remrake as as bases. This gives a better vendele ctotas doluptatis visual to the bunker and playability. volore est, sunt illaboreri

Sadly, there are still too many bunkers being left unraked after people have played out, with people even walking over the rake that is placed in the bunker and ignoring it, this is unacceptable and unfair to most members who look after them correctly not to mention the greenkeeping team.

Winter Golf We are now getting into that time of the year where we must protect the course as much as possible and over the next few weeks, we will be adding more posts and rope out of the course. I know this is frustrating, but this is all done to help manage traffic around high-wear areas of the course and to keep areas around greens in the best condition possible for next season.

With the greens being a little softer pitch marks are a lot more common. all members should be looking to repair their pitch mark and looking for another on the green when waiting for their playing partners to putt out. The sooner the pitch mark is repaired the sooner the green recovers and we then continue to have great greens over the winter months.

COURSE & PRO UPDATE Staff Scott Walker who was First Assistant Greenkeeper has moved on to Ashridge Golf Club. Scott was a brilliant member of the green staff, and his knowledge and experience will be a big loss to us at Aldwickbury, but we all wish him well on his new challenge. This month we welcomed Jack Kenworthy to the team who joins us as a Trainee Greenkeeper. If you see me or any of the green staff out on the course or in the clubhouse and you have Dear Redbourn any questions or queries, please ask and we’ll be more than happy to discuss. A Message From Steve Dear friends, I have been deeply moved by all the cards and messages of support, which I‘ve received since my cancer diagnosis. I miss you all and my life at the club terribly. My first chemotherapy cycle started on Thursday 27th October. I’m going to receive four cycles over two months. After which there will be a period of recovery before surgery. This is followed by another two months of chemotherapy. It all seems like a long way off in the future but at least I’m on the road to recovery. The care I am receiving is amazing. I have met so many exceptional people already from other patients to the selfless nursing staff. It’s very humbling indeed. There has been a mixture of good days and bad since my treatment began. I am using all my years of golfing experience to adjust to the new challenges I face each day. My mantra is “play it as it lies” which I guess is just another way of saying “face up to it and do the best you can”. Just like on the course you must accept where you are so that you can move on. So far so good. I am lucky to have such brilliant work colleagues, especially Ian and Robin, who have given me an incredible amount of support over the last few months. I shall be forever grateful for all their kindness in helping to make this difficult situation more bearable. Aldwickbury Park is such a fantastic club. I hope that you all enjoy your rounds during the winter season and remember it’s only a game. See you on the course sometime. Steve Barker

PRO UPDATE Hedgehog Winter Wheels

Will we have trolley bans?

The Hedgehog Winter Wheel Policy came into force on Monday 13th November 2023 and Hedgehog wheels are now COMPULSORY for all golf trolleys used on the 18-hole Park Course. Some of you may be new to the club so here is a brief explanation of the policy and why we use it.

The biggest benefit to members of the policy is that in normal circumstances* we will be able to allow the use of trolleys throughout the winter. Prior to Hedgehogs to protect the course we had to implement day-to-day trolley bans which were very inconvenient to our golfers who relied on a trolley to play the course. Having the confidence that you can use a trolley throughout the winter also makes it far easier to plan tee times and be able to play in competitions. The policy has also allowed us to keep the course open over the winter far more than other local clubs.

What are Hedgehogs? Hedgehog is a brand name for a spiked or bobbled sleeve that fits around a trolley wheel to raise the wheel off the ground and reduce Dear Redbourn the surface contact between the trolley and the grass.
