August - September 2025
Mark Woods General Manager
Hello Everyone,
2025 has been a year of exceptional weather in the UK, with several records broken, particularly during the spring and summer months. Spring was both the warmest and sunniest on record, and June brought further record-breaking temperatures.
While this has been a great opportunity to get out and play, it has also presented consistent challenges for our greenkeepers, particularly with irrigation. I want to take this moment to acknowledge the exceptional work of our greenkeeping team, who have maintained the courses to a high standard despite these demanding conditions.
On that note, I’m delighted to announce that Dean Gregory has stepped up to the position of Course Manager, following Stuart’s decision to pursue a new career outside of greenkeeping. We wish Stuart all the very best and thank him sincerely for his huge contribution to the improvements on both courses – something I’m confident Dean and the team will continue to build upon.
Over the last few months, we have also hosted each section’s Club Championship, which were once again very well attended, a clear reflection of the committees’ constant efforts, for which I am truly grateful.
With the courses, driving range, and bar busier than ever, thanks to the favourable weather, I would like to thank all teams for their hard work and commitment.
With the sun turning up the heat, we’ve added temporary water dispensers by the 9th tee
for when it exceeds 30°C. We still encourage everyone to keep sipping water, use sun protection, and think about playing fewer holes or hopping in a buggy to beat the heat and keep the game fun.
Before we know it, we’ll be moving into the colder months as daylight hours shorten, and I’m excited to share our plans for the remainder of this year and next at the AGMs.
We know the clubhouse Wi-Fi has been a frustration for many, so we’re delighted to share that following a recent site survey, the recommended upgrades are happening this week. Soon you’ll be able to browse, stream, and stay connected with ease while enjoying the clubhouse.
As always, my door is open if you would like to discuss anything, whether it’s positive feedback
Dean Gregory Course Manager
Hi everyone,
I’m Dean Gregory, and I’m pleased to introduce myself as the new Course Manager here at Wycombe Heights Golf Club.
After 18 months as Deputy Course Manager, I’ve come to appreciate the unique character of our course and the passion of our members and team. I’m looking forward to building on this and leading the club forward.
My background in greenkeeping is varied, but a real highlight was my time at Centurion Golf Club, where I worked closely with the development team to build a fantastic new course. That experience shaped my approach, combining modern greenkeeping methods with a real respect for the natural environment. It’s something I’m eager to continue here at Wycombe Heights.
One of my main aims is to bring a more rustic feel to the course, encouraging it to return to nature where possible. I believe a course that feels more natural not only enhances play but also helps create a welcoming environment for everyone who visits.
Sustainability will remain a key focus, whether that’s optimising irrigation to conserve water, reducing chemical use, or encouraging native plants and habitats.
We’re currently working on improving the presentation and playability of our bunkers. A specialist bunker architect recently reviewed the course, and their recommendations will guide our improvement plans over the coming years. I know bunkers can be challenging, so I appreciate your support in raking them after use.
To further improve our greens, we’ll be introducing more frequent aeration throughout the year, and our key focuses will be:
• Improved drainage: The channels created allow excess water to drain effectively, reducing waterlogging.
• Enhanced air and nutrient penetration: These channels help air and nutrients reach the grass roots, promoting healthier growth.
• Reduced compaction: Loosens soil to benefit root development.
• Promotes healthier roots: The combination of improved drainage and nutrient availability encourages deeper, stronger roots and overall healthier greens.
You’ll also see new tee signage and markers being installed on the Par 3 course soon, which will allow members to gain an official handicap for this layout.
I’m always keen to hear your feedback and ideas as we work together to keep Wycombe Heights in top condition, both as a golf course and as part of the local landscape.
Thank you for your continued support,
Dean
Duncan Purcell Head Professional
What a glorious summer we are having, all bar one wet week. Despite some dry areas on a few greens, our courses have held up very well compared to a lot of the other courses in the area. Having an approach and green irrigation is starting to reap the rewards of reservoir installation a few seasons ago. Not to mention a lot of hard work from the greens staff!
As I am sure you are all aware, having read the news, Stuart Giddings has left the Centre to pursue another role. I want to personally thank Stuart for his endeavours here as the Head Course Manager for the last two years. We are lucky to have his former deputy, Dean Gregory, promoted to Head Course Manager now. We are in great hands with Dean, and we all wish him the very best in his new role.
After Scottie Sheffler’s win at Royal Portrush last month, he only needs to capture the US Open title now to join the club of grand slam holders in the men’s game. He would be only the seventh to achieve this incredible feat! While I wish him all the best in his endeavours to achieve this goal, let us all hope that he and his US Team have an off-week at this year’s Ryder Cup in New York. The venue for this year’s edition is the Bethpage (Black Course), which is one of the hardest and longest courses in professional golf. Here’s hoping Captain Luke Donald and Team Europe can deliver us some end-of-season golf elation.

Mike and I have conducted many custom fits this year, and we both agree that the most popular club has been to get into people’s bags this year – the 7 wood. So, this got me thinking. Is it time to change with the times with club choices in my bag? With so many tour pros using these more as opposed to long irons, am I missing a trick? My curiosity got the best of me, so I recently had a fitting with Stuart Gauld from TaylorMade, their top fitter in the UK. Here is what I found with my fitting:
A friendlier alternative to long irons and hybrids – especially from the fairway or rough.
• Easier Launch
The 7-wood has a higher loft (typically 21°–23°) and a lower centre of gravity, making it easier to get the ball airborne – ideal for players who struggle to launch long irons.
• More Forgiving
A larger clubhead and wider sole provide more forgiveness on off-centre hits compared to long irons as well as hybrids.
• Better from the Rough
The taller face design helps the 7-wood cut through rough more cleanly than a long iron.
• Higher Ball Flight + Softer Landing
The 7-wood promotes a higher trajectory, making it great for holding greens on longer approach shots – something long irons often struggle with.
• Confidence at Address
Many players feel more comfortable looking down at the slightly larger head of a 7-wood than a thin long iron or smaller hybrid.
While I have enjoyed the option of either a hybrid or 2-iron in my bag, after having my fitting and reviewing the data with Stuart, I saw more benefits for my own game to drop the hybrid or 2-iron and have now ordered a 7 wood myself.
Speaking of custom fitting, please keep us in mind if you are looking at changing your golf equipment. We primarily customfit TaylorMade and PING golf clubs, along with Vokey wedges. Don’t forget, we accept trade-ins through Nearly New Golf, making it easier than ever to get the clubs you want and lowering the cost of your new golfing equipment!
Best,
Duncan

Liberty Martins Driving Range Manager
Hi Everyone!
Summer is certainly in full swing, and whilst it has been a hot and dry one, we are keeping things cool and exciting at Wycombe Heights Driving Range!
As the cooler evenings are approaching, I have introduced the perfect way to utilise them with Unlimited Balls every Sunday 6pm – 8pm for just £10 per person. Inclusive of this price is the use of our outstanding TrackMan Technology – the best company for your play, practice and socialising.
Just how impressive is the TrackMan Range we have?
TrackMan placed multiple radars around our range, creating an overlapping tracking field array that tracks ball flight from every bay. The
tour-proven radar instantly relays the data to the in-bay screen that the ball has been hit from.
A particularly notable aspect of the TrackMan screens is the virtual golf courses. TrackMan’s 3D render ensures every feature and every target is replicated realistically. It is unbelievably accurate, with every shot being illustrated in exceptional graphics.
Immerse yourself in these striking courses, including some popular names. Here are just a few you should expect to see in rotation over the next few weeks, alongside many others, chosen by our team, who are just as excited to try them as you are.
• Royal Portrush – Dunluce Links (Portrush, Northern Ireland)
• Royal Troon (Ayrshire, Scotland)
• The Grove (Hertfordshire, UK)
• Wentworth (Surrey, UK)
• Le Golf National (Paris, France)
• Senjoa Valley (California, US)
We look forward to seeing you soon!
