What does it take to be “Youth of the Year?” The nationally recognized Boys & Girls Clubs of America “Youth of the Year” program has a real impact on developing great futures for young people. Through an application and interview process, “Youth of the Year” candidates are selected by a local panel of esteemed judges based on leadership qualities, service to the community, academic achievement, letters of recommendation, obstacles overcome, written essays, poise, and public speaking.

Some of the benefits and honors... All of our Clubhouse Youth of the Year Winners will be awarded scholarships to assist them in their academic pursuits. One candidate, Anycia Alarcon was selected as our 2021 “Mark Irvin City of Tucson Youth of the Year.” As our city winner, Anycia represented Tucson at the State of Arizona competition this past March. We are extremely proud of our outstanding Youth of the Year winners, and we wish them much success.

2021 Youth of the Year Celebration Host Community Advocate Edmund Marquez Edmund Marquez owns four Allstate Insurance Agencies in Tucson, Arizona. He is the largest captive insurance agency in Southern Arizona, and one of the largest Hispanic-owned Allstate agency groups in the U.S. Edmund was born and raised in Tucson AZ, attended Sabino High School, Pima Community College, earned a Bachelors in Communications from the University of Arizona, and a business certificate from Stanford University (LBAN). He currently serves on several Boards of Directors, including the Rio Nuevo Multipurpose Facilities District, Southern Arizona Leadership Council, Sun Corridor Inc, Reid Park Zoo, The Tucson Metro Chamber of Commerce, is the Chairman of the Board of United Way, and Past-Chairman of the Pima Community College Foundation and the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. He is also a proud member of National Leadership Council of the University of Arizona Foundation. Edmund was named the Businessman of the Year in 2004 by the Tucson Hispanic Chamber, awarded the Breath of Life Award in 2012 by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and the Father of the Year by the Father’s Day Council in 2016. Edmund has been inducted into the Sabino High School Hall of Fame, the Pi Kappa Alpha Hall of Honor, and the Southern Arizona YMCA Hall of Fame. Edmund is an avid cyclist with the Jim Click Racing Team, and is a high energy emcee of numerous community events throughout the Tucson community.

ANYCIA ALARCON * Steve Daru Clubhouse * Tucson International Academy A senior at Tucson International Academy, Anycia is a long-time Steve Daru Clubhouse member and its Youth of the Year. Over the past seven years, she has participated in numerous Clubhouse programs. Her favorite activity is volunteering, and Anycia has completed an outstanding 500 hours of community volunteer service in the last year. While helping out in her community, she continues to achieve a high GPA and be on the honor roll. Anycia serves as class president at her school. Her compassion for others and desire to help her peers achieve their upmost potential lead to her service as class president. Anycia is an inspiration to every Clubhouse member she interacts with. Anycia plans to attend college and aspires to be a neuropsychologist/ neurosurgeon.

* Rincon High School A member of Frank & Edith Morton Clubhouse for three years, Adam is the Clubhouse’s Youth of the Year winner. Adam currently attends Tucson High School where he is a junior and has earned a 3.7 GPA. Adam initially joined the Clubhouse to play basketball but soon discovered the numerous other programs and benefits the Clubhouse offers. Adam participates in the Excel! Program, which helps him maintain his high GPA. He is also a hardworking, dedicated, and motivated student athlete. Adam has faced immense challenges in his life such as the loss of his grandmother. The Clubhouse’s comradery and family atmosphere were pivotal in Adam feeling supported during that time. He plans to pursue his love of sports on the collegiate level by earning a degree in Sports Medicine at Arizona State University.

Long-time member at Frank & Edith Morton Clubhouse, Kitanna has been coming to her “home-away-from-home” for seven years. She is a freshman at Rincon High School with a GPA of 3.8. Through her perseverance and drive, Kitanna is a leader amongst her peers at the Clubhouse and has developed many close friends there. She has participated in the SMART Girls, Keystone and the Excel! program, attending the SMART Girls sleepover where she was able to openly talk about her own experience as a young woman and learn self-defense. Kitanna also thrives with creative activities and aspires to be a playwright. She hopes to attend New York University to earn a degree in creative writing.

* Alta Vista High School As its Youth of the Year, Desiree has been attending Holmes Tuttle Clubhouse for ten years. She is a senior at Alta Vista High School where she has earned an impressive 4.00 GPA. At the Clubhouse, Desiree has actively participated in numerous programs such as Smart Girls, Money Matters, Clubhouse Internship Academy (CIA), and Parks in Focus. Desiree hones her leadership skills as the current president of the Keystone Club and peer facilitator for the I AM You 360 Empowerment Program. She is always willing to help her fellow Club members and staff. A role model for younger members and her peers, Desiree is a compassionate and energetic young adult with a bright future. She plans on pursuing nursing at the University of Arizona in the Fall.
A senior at Alta Vista High school, Eric has been an active member at the Holmes Tuttle Clubhouse since he was ten years old. Eric is a sports lover and plays on the Club’s basketball team where he is a natural leader for his teammates. Eric has enthusiastically participated in many Clubhouse programs such as in Passport to Manhood, Smart Leaders, and Keystone Club. Eric is the definition of a positive role model for his peers and younger members in the Clubhouse. Always taking the time to chat with younger members and offering a lending hand to staff, he believes that hard work, good morals and ethics are the keys to success in life. Eric plans to pursue a career as a welder and aspires to owning his own welding business like his father.

* Tucson High School Jaidon has been a member of the Jim & Vicki Click Clubhouse since the eighth grade and is the Clubhouse’s Youth of the Year. A junior at University High School, he has earned a 3.75 GPA. Jaidon has participated in many programs at the Clubhouse, but his favorite is Keystone Club. A gifted student athlete who also plays basketball for Rincon High, he enjoys the comradery of the Clubhouse where he can spend time and play basketball with his friends. Jaidon enjoys STEAM activities and plans to continue pursuing this love by studying to become an engineer. He is considering a number of higher education options such as the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and University of Portland.

Tadeusz is a junior at Tucson High School where he has Varsity lettered in basketball and is an honor roll student with an impressive 3.83 GPA. At the Jim and Vicki Click Clubhouse, Tadeusz enjoys any activity basketball related including both the live game and the virtual NBA 2k video game. Tadeusz is dedicated to his future and has participated in many Clubhouse programs, including Passport to Manhood, Money Matters, and Career Launch. His best Clubhouse memory is attending a college tour of University of San Diego in the summer of 2018. An entrepreneur at heart, Tadeusz plans to study business at the University of Arizona or Arizona State University.

Melquidez “Mel” is a 17-year-old from Ombudsman Charter High School and the Pascua Yaqui Boys & Girls Clubhouse Youth of the Year. A dedicated Club member, Melquidez has participated in many programs for the past nine years. His best Clubhouse memory is attending the Native American Unity Conference and visiting Walt Disney World in Orlando. Melquidez credits the clubhouse with helping him focus on his future and shares that the clubhouse is where he gets to “make his dreams a reality.” This Fall, he will pursue his dream to become an electrical engineer at Kalamazoo College in Michigan.
A 17-year-old junior from Hiaki High School, Nely is a long-time member of Pascua Yaqui Boys & Girls Clubhouse and has participated in numerous programs over the past ten years. She credits her Clubhouse experience with supporting her love of art and her entrepreneurial spirit. Nely spends much of time in the Art room where she fulfills both her artistic talents and hones her business acumen. Nely started her own sticker business and because of her talent has built up a good customer base considering it’s her first time experimenting with selling her art. She plans to attend college and continue her entrepreneur experience by studying business.

* Sunnyside High School Eddie, a sophomore at Sunnyside High School, is a devoted student with a 3.98 GPA. He is a long-time member and the Roy Drachman Boys & Girls Clubhouse Youth of the Year. Over the past eight years, he has participated in a multitude of programs, including Money Matters, Clubhouse Internship Academy (CIA), Cooking Club, and Parks in Focus. Because of his talent, Eddie was selected as one of six Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson youth asked to help record videos for the Parks in Focus program, where he got to practice his public speaking and videography skills. One his greatest assets is his confidence and willingness to try new activities. Eddie also enjoys sports and has played on the Clubhouse soccer and basketball teams for the past six years. He is a role model to the other Club members and participates in programs with a very positive attitude. Eddie plans on majoring in architecture at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University when he graduates high school.

Esperanza is a junior at Sunnyside High School and has been an active member at the Roy Drachman Boys & Girls Club for five years. Esperanza has participated in many programs, including Clubhouse Internship Academy (CIA), Cooking Club, Fine Arts, and Money Matters. She exhibits her sports prowess on the Clubhouse volleyball, soccer, and basketball teams. Esperanza inspires her fellow Clubhouse members by encouraging other girls to participate in sports. Esperanza energetically assists Clubhouse staff, helping with dinner, events, and programs. She mentors younger Club members and takes the time to provide them with positive social interactions such as playing cards. Over this past year, Esperanza has really dedicated herself to her schoolwork and has been a daily presence at the Clubhouse. She plans to attend Pima Community College after graduating high school.

Mariah is a junior at Tucson International Academy and maintains an impressive 3.76 GPA. She has participated in many Clubhouse programs, but her favorite activity is working in the kitchen and preparing the meals for the other Clubhouse members. Through completing these tasks, Mariah leads by example and energetically interacts with her peers. As part of the Clubhouse Internship Academy (CIA), Mariah’s first job has been with the Clubhouse. She feels fortunate to have the opportunity to put into practice many of the lessons she has learned throughout her time at the Clubhouse. Without this opportunity, she shares that she would not get to impact as many lives as she can on a daily basis. Mariah plans to pursue criminology when she attends college.

Program Areas!
Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson is committed to providing youth with high quality enrichment, arts, and sports and recreation programs during after-school hours and the summer. While it costs our organization more than $750 annually per Club member, membership fees are only $20 per school year and $60 for summer camp. Membership includes daily access to everything that the Clubs have to offer, with no additional fees… and no child is ever turned away due to inability to pay. All of our programs are carefully designed and implemented to support achievement of our Movement’s Youth Development Outcomes for young people leaving our Clubs at age 17 which are: Positive Self-Identity; Educational, Social, Emotional and Cultural Competencies; Community and Civic Involvement; Health and Well Being; and a Moral Compass.
